RESUMO

To mitigate methane emission from urban natural gas distribution systems, it is crucial to understand local leak rates and occurrence rates. To explore urban methane emissions in cities outside the U.S., where significant emissions were found previously, mobile measurements were performed in 12 cities across eight countries. The surveyed cities range from medium size, like Groningen, NL, to large size, like Toronto, CA, and London, UK. Furthermore, this survey spanned across European regions from Barcelona, ES, to Bucharest, RO. The joint analysis of all data allows us to focus on general emission behavior for cities with different infrastructure and environmental conditions. We find that all cities have a spectrum of small, medium, and large methane sources in their domain. The emission rates found follow a heavy-tailed distribution, and the top 10% of emitters account for 60-80% of total emissions, which implies that strategic repair planning could help reduce emissions quickly. Furthermore, we compare our findings with inventory estimates for urban natural gas-related methane emissions from this sector in Europe. While cities with larger reported emissions were found to generally also have larger observed emissions, we find clear discrepancies between observation-based and inventory-based emission estimates for our 12 cities.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) was initially used for locally advanced or inoperable breast cancers. Its extension to early disease has facilitated breast-conserving surgery (BCS). This study investigated the use of NAC in patients registered with the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Registry (HKBCR); it also assessed NAC effectiveness according to rates of pathological complete response (pCR) and BCS. METHODS: Records were retrieved from the HKBCR regarding 13 435 women who had been diagnosed with invasive breast cancer during the period of 2006 to 2017, including 1084 patients who received NAC. RESULTS: The proportion of patients treated with NAC nearly doubled from 5.6% in 2006-2011 to 10.3% in 2012-2017. The increase was most pronounced among patients with stage II or III disease. In terms of biological subtype, substantial increases in the receipt of NAC were evident among patients with triple-negative and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive (non-luminal) tumours. The best rates of pCR were observed in patients with HER2-positive (non-luminal) [46.0%] tumours, followed by patients with luminal B (HER2-positive) [29.4%] and triple-negative (29.3%) tumours. After NAC, the rate of BCS was 53.9% in patients with clinical stage IIA disease, compared with 38.2% in patients with pathological stage IIA disease who did not receive NAC. CONCLUSION: The use of NAC in Hong Kong increased from 2006 to 2017. The findings regarding rates of pCR and BCS indicate that NAC is an effective treatment; it should be considered in patients with stage ≥II disease, as well as patients with HER2- positive (non-luminal) or triple-negative breast cancers.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This post-hoc analysis retrospectively assessed data from two recent studies of antiemetic regimens for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV). The primary objective was to compare olanzapine-based versus netupitant/palonosetron (NEPA)-based regimens in terms of controlling CINV during cycle 1 of doxorubicin/cyclophosphamide (AC) chemotherapy; secondary objectives were to assess quality of life (QOL) and emesis outcomes over four cycles of AC. METHODS: This study included 120 Chinese patients with early-stage breast cancer who were receiving AC; 60 patients received the olanzapine-based antiemetic regimen, whereas 60 patients received the NEPA-based antiemetic regimen. The olanzapine-based regimen comprised aprepitant, ondansetron, dexamethasone, and olanzapine; the NEPA-based regimen comprised NEPA and dexamethasone. Patient outcomes were compared in terms of emesis control and QOL. RESULTS: During cycle 1 of AC, the olanzapine group exhibited a higher rate of 'no use of rescue therapy' in the acute phase (olanzapine vs NEPA: 96.7% vs 85.0%, P=0.0225). No parameters differed between groups in the delayed phase. The olanzapine group had significantly higher rates of 'no use of rescue therapy' (91.7% vs 76.7%, P=0.0244) and 'no significant nausea' (91.7% vs 78.3%, P=0.0408) in the overall phase. There were no differences in QOL between groups. Multiple cycle assessment revealed that the NEPA group had higher rates of total control in the acute phase (cycles 2 and 4) and the overall phase (cycles 3 and 4). CONCLUSION: These results do not conclusively support the superiority of either regimen for patients with breast cancer who are receiving AC.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This study was performed to examine the effects of primary granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) prophylaxis on neutropenic toxicity, chemotherapy delivery, and hospitalisation among Chinese patients with breast cancer in Hong Kong. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with breast cancer who received adjuvant docetaxel plus cyclophosphamide chemotherapy from November 2007 to October 2013 at Princess Margaret Hospital. Data were collected regarding the usage of G-CSF prophylaxis; incidences of grade 3 or 4 neutropenia, febrile neutropenia, non-neutropenic fever, and infection; hospital admissions, and chemotherapy dose delivery. Patients who began to receive G-CSF prophylaxis during the first cycle of chemotherapy and continued such prophylaxis in subsequent cycles were regarded as the primary G-CSF prophylaxis group. RESULTS: In total, 231 female Chinese patients with breast cancer were included in the analysis. Overall, 193 (83.5%) patients received primary G-CSF prophylaxis. The demographics and tumour characteristics were comparable between patients with and without primary G-CSF prophylaxis. Primary G-CSF prophylaxis significantly reduced febrile neutropenia incidence from 31.6% to 14.5% (relative risk=0.45, 95% confidence interval=0.25-0.81). Primary G-CSF prophylaxis also significantly reduced the incidence of grade 3 or 4 neutropenia from 57.9% to 24.7% (relative risk=0.43, 95% confidence interval=0.30-0.62) and the incidence of febrile neutropenia-related hospital admission from 31.6% to 12.4% (P=0.025). Finally, it enabled more patients to receive adequate chemotherapy dose delivery. CONCLUSION: Primary G-CSF prophylaxis effectively reduced the incidences of grade 3 or 4 neutropenia and febrile neutropenia, while enabling adequate chemotherapy dose delivery and reducing hospital admissions among Chinese patients with breast cancer who received adjuvant docetaxel plus cyclophosphamide chemotherapy.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: A substantial number of people infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) remain asymptomatic throughout the course of infection. Nearly half of pregnant women with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are asymptomatic upon diagnosis; these cases are not without risk of maternal morbidity. Here, we investigated the seroprevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in an unselected sample of pregnant women in Hong Kong. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included pregnant women who presented for routine Down syndrome screening (DSS) between November 2019 and October 2020; all women subsequently delivered at the booking hospitals. Serum antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 were analysed using a qualitative serological assay in paired serum samples taken at DSS and delivery for all participants. RESULTS: In total, 1830 women were recruited. Six women (0.33%) were seropositive at the DSS visit; this seropositivity persisted until delivery. Of the six women, none reported relevant symptoms during pregnancy; one reported a travel history before DSS and one reported relevant contact history. The interval between sample collections was 177 days (range, 161-195). Among women with epidemiological risk factors, 1.79% with travel history, 50% with relevant contact history, and 0.77% with community SARS-CoV-2 testing history, were seropositive. CONCLUSION: The low seroprevalence in this study suggests that strict public health measures are effective for preventing SARS-CoV-2 transmission. However, these measures cannot be maintained indefinitely. Until a highly effective therapeutic drug targeting SARS-CoV-2 becomes available, vaccination remains the best method to control the COVID-19 pandemic.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Short Form 12-item Health Survey (SF-12v2) was originally developed in English, but it is also available in Hong Kong (HK) Chinese. While both language versions had their measurement properties well assessed in their respective populations, their measurement invariance in scores has not been examined. Therefore, we aimed to assess their measurement invariance. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study on individuals aged 18 years or older at a university campus. Those who were bilingual in English and Chinese were randomly assigned to self-complete either the standard English or the HK Chinese SF-12v2. Measurement invariance of the two components and eight scales of the SF-12v2 was concluded if the corresponding 90% confidence interval (CI) for the difference between the two language versions entirely fell within the minimal clinically important difference of ± 3 units. Multiple-group confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was also performed. RESULTS: A total of 1013 participants completed the SF-12v2 (496 in English and 517 in HK Chinese), with a mean age of 22 years (Range 18-58), and 626 participants (62%) were female. There were no significant differences in demographics. Only the physical and mental components and the mental health (MH) scale had their 90% CIs (0.21 to 1.61, - 1.00 to 0.98, and - 0.86 to 2.84, respectively) completely fall within the ± 3 units. The multiple-group CFA showed partial strict invariance. CONCLUSIONS: The English and HK Chinese versions of the SF-12v2 can be used in studies with their two components and MH scores pooled in the analysis.

RESUMO

This report presents 3 procedures with visceral "chimney stenting" in conjunction with an endovascular aneurysm sealing (EVAS) device, known as chEVAS, for treatment of type 1a endoleak. It includes the first published chEVAS in a patient with previous fenestrated endovascular aneurysm repair (FEVAR). Cases include an 80-year-old man 8 years after FEVAR for a juxtarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA); an 85-year-old woman 9 months after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for a ruptured infrarenal AAA; and an 84-year-old woman 3 months after EVAR for a symptomatic infrarenal AAA. Technical success was achieved in all cases, with 1 postoperative death. The remaining 2 patients had no residual type 1a endoleak at 10 and 14 months respectively.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To examine the efficacy, safety, and procedural costs of percutaneous aspiration thrombectomy (PAT) as a first-line treatment for noniatrogenic acute lower limb ischemia (ALI) compared with conventional catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients who underwent endovascular intervention for ALI from January 2015 to August 2017 were included. Fifteen patients were treated with the use of primary PAT and 27 patients were treated with the use of primary CDT. The primary end point was complete thrombus clearance with improvement in Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) score. Adjunctive treatment for thrombus removal was considered to indicate technical failure. Treatment of underlying chronic disease was not considered to indicate technical failure. Procedural costs for each patient were calculated by itemizing all disposable equipment, facility overheads, and staff costs. RESULTS: Of the 15 primary PAT patients, technical success was achieved in 8 (53%); the remaining 7 (47%) required adjunctive CDT. Of the 27 primary CDT patients, technical success was achieved in 25 (89%); the remaining 2 (11%) required adjunctive PAT. There were 4 complications in the primary PAT group: 2 were procedure related and of a minor grade. There were 8 complications in the primary CDT group: All were procedure-related, including 2 major groin/retroperitoneal hemorrhage and 1 death from intracranial hemorrhage. Limb salvage was attained in all patients. There were no significant differences in average procedural costs per patient between the 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS: First-line use of PAT for endovascular treatment of ALI can reduce the need for CDT, with no significant cost difference.

RESUMO

We computationally study the micromechanics of shear-induced size segregation and propose distinct migration mechanisms for individual large and small particles. While small particles percolate through voids without enduring contacts, large particles climb under shear through their crowded neighborhoods with anisotropic contact network. Particle rotation associated with shear is necessary for the upward migration of large particles. Segregation of large particles can be suppressed with inadequate friction, or with no rotation; increasing interparticle friction promotes the migration of large particles, but has little effect on the percolation of small particles.

RESUMO

In this paper, we demonstrate a novel low temperature nanofabrication approach that enables the formation of ultra-sharp high aspect ratio (HAR) and high density nanotip structures and their integration onto nanoscale cantilever beams. The nanotip structure consists of a nanoscale thermally evaporated Cr Spindt tip on top of an amorphous silicon rod. An apex radius of the tip, as small as 2.5 nm, has been achieved, and is significantly smaller than any other Spindt tips reported so far. 100 nm wide tips with aspect ratio of more than 50 and tip density of more than 5 × 109 tips cm-2 have been fabricated. The HAR tips have been integrated onto an array of 460 nm wide cantilever beams with high precision and yield. In comparison with other approaches, this approach allows the integration of HAR sharp nanotips with nano-mechanical structures in a parallel and CMOS compatible fashion for the first time to our knowledge. Potential applications include on-chip high-speed atomic force microscopy and field emission devices.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: With the colliding global epidemics of diabetes mellitus (DM) and tuberculosis (TB), we studied the effects of DM on the presentation of TB and its response to treatment. METHODS: Consecutive TB patients from 2006 to 2010 in a territory-wide treatment programme offering 9-month extended treatment for TB patients with DM were examined and followed up prospectively to assess their treatment response. Successful treatment completers were tracked through the TB registry and death registry for relapse, death or till 31 December 2014, whichever was the earliest. RESULTS: DM was independently associated with more chest symptoms (adjusted OR (AOR): 1.13) and systemic symptoms (AOR: 1.30) but less with other site-specific symptoms (AOR: 0.58) at TB presentation. There was more frequent pulmonary involvement (AOR: 1.69), with more extensive lung lesion (AOR: 1.25), lung cavity (AOR: 2.00) and positive sputum smear (AOR: 1.83) and culture (AOR: 1.38), but no difference in the proportion of retreatment cases or isoniazid and/or rifampicin resistance. After treatment initiation, there was higher overall incidence (AOR: 1.38) of adverse effects (mainly gastrointestinal symptoms, renal impairment and peripheral neuropathy but less fever and skin hypersensitivity reactions), more smear non-conversion (AOR: 1.59) and culture non-conversion (AOR: 1.40) at 2 months, and lower combined cure/treatment completion rate at 12 months (AOR: 0.79), but no difference in the relapse rate after having successfully completed treatment. CONCLUSION: DM adversely affected the clinical presentation and treatment response of TB, but there was no difference in the drug resistance and relapse rates.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Several models have been developed to predict mortality in ischaemic stroke. We aimed to evaluate systematically the performance of published stroke prognostic scores. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE and EMBASE in February 2014 for prognostic models (published between 2003 and 2014) used in predicting early mortality (<6 months) after ischaemic stroke. We evaluated discriminant ability of the tools through meta-analysis of the area under the curve receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) or c-statistic. We evaluated the following components of study validity: collection of prognostic variables, neuroimaging, treatment pathways and missing data. RESULTS: We identified 18 articles (involving 163 240 patients) reporting on the performance of prognostic models for mortality in ischaemic stroke, with 15 articles providing AUC for meta-analysis. Most studies were either retrospective, or post hoc analyses of prospectively collected data; all but three reported validation data. The iSCORE had the largest number of validation cohorts (five) within our systematic review and showed good performance in four different countries, pooled AUC 0.84 (95% CI 0.82-0.87). We identified other potentially useful prognostic tools that have yet to be as extensively validated as iSCORE - these include SOAR (2 studies, pooled AUC 0.79, 95% CI 0.78-0.80), GWTG (2 studies, pooled AUC 0.72, 95% CI 0.72-0.72) and PLAN (1 study, pooled AUC 0.85, 95% CI 0.84-0.87). CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis has identified and summarized the performance of several prognostic scores with modest to good predictive accuracy for early mortality in ischaemic stroke, with the iSCORE having the broadest evidence base.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We aimed to examine the association between chocolate intake and the risk of incident heart failure in a UK general population. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify this association. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used data from a prospective population-based study, the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (EPIC)-Norfolk cohort. Chocolate intake was quantified based on a food frequency questionnaire obtained at baseline (1993-1997) and incident heart failure was ascertained up to March 2009. We supplemented the primary data with a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies which evaluated risk of incident heart failure with chocolate consumption. A total of 20,922 participants (53% women; mean age 58 ± 9 years) were included of whom 1101 developed heart failure during the follow up (mean 12.5 ± 2.7 years, total person years 262,291 years). After adjusting for lifestyle and dietary factors, we found 19% relative reduction in heart failure incidence in the top (up to 100 g/d) compared to the bottom quintile of chocolate consumption (HR 0.81 95%CI 0.66-0.98) but the results were no longer significant after controlling for comorbidities (HR 0.87 95%CI 0.71-1.06). Additional adjustment for potential mediators did not attenuate the results further. We identified five relevant studies including the current study (N = 75,408). The pooled results showed non-significant 19% relative risk reduction of heart failure incidence with higher chocolate consumption (HR 0.81 95%CI 0.66-1.01). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that higher chocolate intake is not associated with subsequent incident heart failure.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Soft drink consumption is associated with adverse health behaviours that predispose to adverse cardiovascular risk factor profiles; however, it is unclear whether their intake independently leads to an increased risk of cardiovascular events and mortality. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate this. METHODS: Medline and EMBASE were searched in July 2015 for studies that considered soft drink intake and risk of mortality, myocardial infarction (MI) or stroke. Pooled risk ratios (RRs) for adverse outcomes were calculated using inverse variance with a random effects model, and heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 statistic. RESULTS: A total of seven prospective cohort studies with 308,420 participants (age range 34-75 years) were included in the review. The pooled results suggest a greater risk of stroke (RR 1.13, 95% CI 1.02-1.24), and MI (RR 1.22, 95% CI 1.14-1.30), but not vascular events with incremental increase in sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption. With incremental increase in artificially sweetened beverage (ASB) consumption, there was a greater risk of stroke (RR 1.08, 95% CI 1.03-1.14), but not vascular events or MI. In the evaluation of high vs. low SSB, there was a greater risk of MI (RR 1.19, 95% CI 1.09-1.31) but not stroke, vascular events or mortality. For ASB, there was a significantly greater risk of stroke (RR 1.14, 95% CI 1.04-1.26) and vascular events (RR 1.44, 95% CI 1.02-2.03) but not MI or mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest an association between consumption of sugar-sweetened and ASBs and cardiovascular risk, although consumption may be a surrogate for adverse health behaviours.

RESUMO

The rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) regulates a range of involuntary behaviours but is most often associated with nociception via the action of pronociceptive ON cells and antinociceptive OFF cells. The phasic responses of ON and OFF cells determine whether or not incoming noxious signals provoke a withdrawal reflex, and previous studies have suggested that reflex RVM activity patterns actively shape motor output. Here we challenged the model by using juvenile rats, which are known to exhibit markedly different reflex responses compared with adults. By recording single-cell activity in the RVM and the electromyography responses of hindlimb flexor muscles to noxious thermal stimulation we found that the juvenile reflex had a shorter onset latency, was larger in amplitude and exhibited a decreased rise time compared with the adult reflex. The responses of ON and OFF cells faithfully tracked the shorter onset latency of the reflex by also responding earlier and, thus, still preceded the reflex. However, neither the reflex amplitude nor the ongoing response profile was predicted by the firing rate of RVM cells in either age group. Instead we found a close correspondence between RVM activity and the reflex only during the initiation of the response. Furthermore, the short rise time of the juvenile reflex was reflected in higher rates of change of both ON and OFF cell firing. Our data suggest that the RVM is associated only with the initiation of reflexes and does not shape ongoing muscle activity, which is more likely to be subserved by downstream spinal processes.

RESUMO

The impact of smoking on tuberculosis outcome was evaluated in a territory-wide treatment programme. 16,345 consecutive patients undergoing chemotherapy for active tuberculosis in government chest clinics in Hong Kong from 2001 to 2003 were followed up prospectively for 2 years for treatment outcome and subsequently tracked through the territory-wide tuberculosis notification registry for relapse until the end of 2012. Smoking was associated with more extensive lung disease, lung cavitation and positive sputum smear and culture at the baseline. In both current smokers and ex-smokers, sputum smears and cultures were significantly more likely to remain positive after 2 months of treatment. Both categories of smokers were significantly less likely to achieve cure or treatment completion within 2 years. Overall, 16.7% of unsuccessful treatment outcomes were attributable to smoking, with the key contributor being default in current smokers and death in ex-smokers. Among successful treatment completers, there was a clear gradient (hazard ratios of 1.00, 1.33 and 1.63) of relapse risk from never-smokers to ex-smokers and current smokers, with an overall population attributable risk of 19.4% (current smokers: 12.2%; ex-smokers: 7.2%). Smoking adversely affects baseline disease severity, bacteriological response, treatment outcome and relapse in tuberculosis. Smoking cessation likely reduces relapse and secondary transmission.

RESUMO

AIMS: To synthesise the evidence relating influenza and influenza-like symptoms to the risks of myocardial infarction (MI), heart failure (HF) and stroke. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the evidence relating influenza and influenza-like symptoms to the risks of MI, HF and stroke. We systematically searched all MEDLINE and EMBASE entries up to August 2014 for studies of influenza vs. the cardiovascular outcomes above. We conducted random effects meta-analysis using inverse variance method for pooled odds ratios (OR) and evaluated statistical heterogeneity using the I(2) statistic. RESULTS: We identified 12 studies with a total of 84,003 participants. The pooled OR for risk of MI vs. influenza (serologically confirmed) was 1.27 (95% CI, confidence interval 0.54-2.95), I(2)  = 47%, which was significant for the only study that adjusted for confounders (OR 5.50, 95% CI 1.31-23.13). The pooled OR for risk of MI vs. influenza-like symptoms was 2.17 (95% CI 1.68-2.80), I(2)  = 0%, which was significant for both unadjusted (OR 2.23, 95% CI 1.65-3.01, five studies) and adjusted studies (OR 2.01, 95% CI 1.24-3.27, two studies). We found one study that evaluated stroke risk, one study in patients with HF, and one that evaluated mortality from MI - all of these studies suggested increased risks of events with influenza-like symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: There is an association between influenza-like illness and cardiovascular events, but the relationship is less clear with serologically diagnosed influenza. We recommend renewed efforts to apply current clinical guidelines and maximise the uptake of annual influenza immunisation among patients with cardiovascular diseases, to decrease their risks of MI and stroke.

RESUMO

AIMS: The objective of this study is to externally validate the SOAR stroke score (Stroke subtype, Oxfordshire Community Stroke Project Classification, Age and prestroke modified Rankin score) in predicting hospital length of stay (LOS) following an admission for acute stroke. METHODS: We conducted a multi-centre observational study in eight National Health Service hospital trusts in the Anglia Stroke & Heart Clinical Network between September 2008 and April 2011. The usefulness of the SOAR stroke score in predicting hospital LOS in the acute settings was examined for all stroke and then stratified by discharge status (discharged alive or died during the admission). RESULTS: A total of 3596 patients (mean age 77 years) with first-ever or recurrent stroke (92% ischaemic) were included. Increasing LOS was observed with increasing SOAR stroke score (p < 0.001 for both mean and median) and the SOAR stroke score of 0 had the shortest mean LOS (12 ± 20 days) while the SOAR stroke score of 6 had the longest mean LOS (26 ± 28 days). Among patients who were discharged alive, increasing SOAR stroke score had a significantly higher mean and median LOS (p < 0.001 for both mean and median) and the LOS peaked among patients with score value of 6 [mean (SD) 35 ± 31 days, median (IQR) 23 (14-48) days]. For patients who died as in-patient, there was no significant difference in mean or median LOS with increasing SOAR stroke score (p = 0.68 and p = 0.79, respectively). CONCLUSION: This external validation study confirms the usefulness of the SOAR stroke score in predicting LOS in patients with acute stroke especially in those who are likely to survive to discharge. This provides a simple prognostic score useful for clinicians, patients and service providers.

RESUMO

Health concerns post stroke may be the result of, or exacerbated by, neglected oral health care (OHC). However, OHC may be challenging post stroke due to hemiparesis, hemiplegia, a lack of coordination, and/or cognitive deficits. The objective of this study was to conduct a scoping review and summarise the current state of knowledge pertaining to OHC post stroke. A literature search was conducted using the multiple databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, etc.). Combinations of multiple keywords were searched: oral, dental, health, care, hygiene, teeth, dentures, tooth brushing, stroke, cardiovascular health and cardiovascular disease. A grey literature search was also conducted. Articles included were those published in English between 1970 and July 2013, which focused on at least one aspect of OHC among a stroke population. For clinical trials, ≥50% of the sample must have sustained a stroke. In total, 60 articles met inclusion and focused on three primary area: (i) OHC Importance/Stroke Implications; (ii) Current Research; and (iii) Current Practice. It was found that OHC concerns are mainly related to mastication, dysphagia/nutrition, hygiene, prostheses and quality of life. Research indicates that there is limited specialised and individual care provided, and there are few assessment tools, guidelines and established protocols for oral health that are specific to the stroke population. Further, dental professionals' and nurses' knowledge of OHC is generally inadequate; hence, proper education for health professionals in acute and rehabilitation settings, patients, and caregivers has been discussed.
