RESUMO

Studies of minor-attracted persons have mainly focused on their sexual attractions, and little is known about their romantic attractions. This online qualitative survey study collected 74 self-identified minor-attracted men's anonymous accounts of romantic attraction to minors. Using reflexive thematic analysis, three themes were identified and interpreted: (1) Falling in Love; (2) Recognizing Limitations to Attraction and Relationship Development; (3) Making Sense and Meaning of Romantic Attraction to Minors. Overall, romantic attraction to minors resembles romantic attraction to adults. Findings have implications for how conceptualization, assessment, and treatment of minor attraction may each consider both sexual and romantic domains.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: As mobile health technologies proliferate, their use during exposure-based therapies has the potential to illuminate treatment mechanisms. The primary purpose of this study was to examine three approaches to using continuously collected physiological data of patients with posttraumatic stress disorder during prolonged exposure (PE) therapy, in an effort to examine physiological markers of treatment response. METHODS: Photoplethysmogram-measured heart rates from three non-Hispanic White male veterans, during clinic-based PE therapy sessions, were analyzed to assess three potential therapeutic mechanisms: emotional engagement (examined via correlation analysis between self-reported peak distress ratings and objectively measured peak heart rate in the minute prior to distress ratings), initial emotion activation (examined through time to peak heart rate and peak self-reported distress), and extinction processes within and between therapy sessions (examined via multilevel modeling of within- and between-person changes in heart rate over time and across imaginal PE therapy sessions). RESULTS: Results for each analytical approach with each patient are presented, and benefits and limitations of each approach are discussed. Treatment outcomes were as follows: one participant with overengagement did not benefit from PE, one participant with initial underengagement demonstrated clinical improvement, and one participant with optimal engagement had associated clinical improvements. CONCLUSIONS: Mobile health technologies may provide a new avenue toward unveiling treatment mechanisms in psychotherapy. Use of standardized analytical approaches will enable cross-study comparison and greater understanding of treatment mechanisms, ultimately leading to increased treatment response.

RESUMO

Gay and bisexual men report high body dissatisfaction compared to heterosexual counterparts, but no studies to date have examined how this may impact their sexual functioning. The present study investigated body image domains as predictors of sexual functioning problems (inhibited desire, erectile dysfunction, and premature ejaculation) among an online community sample of 185 gay and bisexual men, ages 18-40. Participants reported moderate to high body image satisfaction and sexual functioning consistent with previous literature with nonclinical male samples. Overall, the total variance accounted for by regression models was low. Body image variables were not predictive of sexual desire. However, increased drive for muscularity and lower affective body esteem were predictive of erectile difficulties. Additionally, negative behavioral body image in sexual situations and evaluative body dissatisfaction were associated with premature ejaculation. Understanding this relationship may have implications for gay and bisexual men's health and wellbeing. Future research directions are discussed.
