RESUMO

The liquid-like feature of thermoelectric superionic conductors is a double-edged sword: the long-range migration of ions hinders the phonon transport, but their directional segregation greatly impairs the service stability. We report the synergetic enhancement in figure of merit (ZT) and stability in Cu1.99Se-based superionic conductors enabled by ion confinement effects. Guided by density functional theory and nudged elastic band simulations, we elevated the activation energy to restrict ion migrations through a cation-anion co-doping strategy. We reduced the carrier concentration without sacrificing the low thermal conductivity, obtaining a ZT of ∼3.0 at 1,050 K. Notably, the fabricated device module maintained a high conversion efficiency of up to ∼13.4% for a temperature difference of 518 K without obvious degradation after 120 cycles. Our work could be generalized to develop electrically and thermally robust functional materials with ionic migration characteristics.

RESUMO

Nanoscale spatially controlled modulation of the properties of ferroelectrics via artificial domain pattering is crucial to their emerging optoelectronics applications. New patterning strategies to achieve high precision and efficiency and to link the resultant domain structures with device functionalities are being sought. Here, we present an epitaxial heterostructure of SrRuO3/PbTiO3/SrRuO3, wherein the domain configuration is delicately determined by the charge screening conditions in the SrRuO3 layer and the substrate strains. Chemical etching of the top SrRuO3 layer leads to a transition from in-plane a domains to out-of-plane c domains, accompanied by a giant (>105) modification in the second harmonic generation response. The modulation effect, coupled with the plasmonic resonance effect from SrRuO3, enables a highly flexible design of nonlinear optical devices, as demonstrated by a simulated split-ring resonator metasurface. This domain patterning strategy may be extended to more thin-film ferroelectric systems with domain stabilities amenable to electrostatic boundary conditions.

RESUMO

GeSe, an analogue of SnSe, shows promise in exhibiting exceptional thermoelectric performance in the Pnma phase. The constraints on its dopability, however, pose challenges in attaining optimal carrier concentrations and improving ZT values. This study demonstrates a crystal structure evolution strategy for achieving highly doped samples and promising ZTs in GeSe via LiBiTe2 alloying. A rhombohedral phase (R3m) can be stabilized in the GeSe-LiBiTe2 system, further evolving into a cubic (Fm3̅m) phase with a rising temperature. The band structures of GeSe-LiBiTe2 in the rhombohedral and cubic phases feature a similar multiple-valley energy-converged valence band of L and Σ bands. The observed high carrier concentration (∼1020 cm-3) reflects the effective convergence of these bands, enabling a high density-of-states effective mass and an enhanced power factor. Moreover, a very low lattice thermal conductivity of 0.6-0.5 W m-1 K-1 from 300 to 723 K is achieved in 0.9GeSe-0.1LiBiTe2, approaching the amorphous limit value. This remarkably low lattice thermal conductivity is related to phonon scattering from point defects, planar vacancies, and ferroelectric instability-induced low-energy Einstein oscillators. Finally, a maximum ZT value of 1.1 to 1.3 at 723 K is obtained, with a high average ZT value of over 0.8 (400-723 K) in 0.9GeSe-0.1LiBiTe2 samples. This study establishes a viable route for tailoring crystal structures to significantly improve the performance of GeSe-related compounds.

RESUMO

Carrier regulation has proven to be an effective approach for optimizing the thermoelectric performance of materials. One common method to adjust the carrier concentration is through element doping. In the case of AgCuTe-based materials, it tends to form with cation vacancies, resulting in a high hole concentration and complex phase composition at low temperatures, which also hinders material stability. However, this also offers additional opportunities to manipulate the carrier concentration. In this study, the improved performance of AgCuTe through indium doping is reported, which leads to a reduction in hole concentration. In combination with a significant increase in the effective mass of the carriers, the enhanced Seebeck coefficient is also realized. Particularly, a notable improvement in power factor is observed in the hexagonal phase near room temperature. Furthermore, a lower electron thermal conductivity is achieved, contributing to an average figure of merit value of ≈1.21 (between 523 and 723 K). Additionally, the presence of indium inhibits the formation of the second phase and ensures a homogeneous phase distribution, which reduces the instability arising from phase transition. This work significantly enhances the potential of AgCuTe-based materials for low to medium-temperature applications.

RESUMO

Defluoridation of coal mining water is of great significance for sustainable development of coal industry in western China. A novel one-step mechanochemical method was developed to prepare polymeric aluminum modified powder activated carbon (PAC) for effective fluoride removal from coal mining water. Aluminum was stably loaded on the PAC through facile solid-phase reaction between polymeric aluminum (polyaluminum chloride (PACl) or polyaluminum ferric chloride (PAFC)) and PAC (1:15 W/W). Fluoride adsorption on PACl and PAFC modified PAC (C-PACl and C-PAFC) all reached equilibrium within 5 min, at rate of 2.56 g mg-1 sec-1 and 1.31 g mg-1 sec-1 respectively. Larger increase of binding energy of Al on C-PACl (AlF bond: 76.64 eV and AlFOH bond: 77.70 eV) relative to that of Al on C-PAFC (AlF bond: 76.52 eV) explained higher fluoride uptake capacity of C-PACl. Less chloride was released from C-PACl than that from C-PAFC due to its higher proportion of covalent chlorine and lower proportion of ionic chlorine. The elements mapping and atomic composition proved the stability of Al loaded on the PAC as well as the enrichment of fluoride on both C-PACl and C-PAFC. The Bader charge, formation energy and bond length obtained from DFT computational results explained the fluoride adsorption mechanism further. The carbon emission was 7.73 kg CO2-eq/kg adsorbent prepared through mechanochemical process, which was as low as 1:82.3 to 1:8.07 × 104 compared with the ones prepared by conventional hydrothermal methods.

RESUMO

Objective: To introduce a locating device for the entry point of intramedullary nail based on the inertial navigation technology, which utilizes multi-dimensional angle information to assist in rapid and accurate positioning of the ideal direction of femoral anterograde intramedullary nails' entry point, and to verify its clinical value through clinical tests. Methods: After matching the locating module with the developing board, which are the two components of the locating device, they were placed on the skin surface of the proximal femur of the affected side. Anteroposterior fluoroscopy was performed. The developing angle corresponding to the ideal direction of entry point was selected based on the X-ray image, and then the yaw angle of the locating module was reset to zero. After resetting, the locating module was combined with the surgical instrument to guide the insertion angle of the guide wire. The ideal direction of entry point was accurately located based on the angle guidance. By setting up an experimental group and a control group for clinical surgical operations, the number of guide wire insertion times, surgical time, fluoroscopy frequency, and intraoperative blood loss with or without the locating device was recorded. Results: Compared to the control group, the experimental group showed significant improvement in the number of guide wire insertion times, surgical time, fluoroscopy frequency, and intraoperative blood loss, with a statistically significant difference (P<0.01). Conclusion: The locating device can assist doctors in quickly locating the entry point of intramedullary nail, effectively reducing the fluoroscopy frequency and surgical time by improving the success rate of the guide wire insertion with one shot, improving surgical efficiency, and possessing certain clinical value.

RESUMO

Recently, the earth-abundant tin sulfide (SnS) has emerged as a promising thermoelectric material due to its phonon and electron structure similar to that of tin selenide (SnSe). However, compared with SnSe, limited progress has been achieved in the thermoelectric property enhancement of SnS. Textured SnS polycrystals with an enhanced thermoelectric performance have been developed in this work. The high carrier mobility benefited from the enhanced texture through the repressing strategy of spark plasma sintering, improving the electrical conductivity. In addition, Sn atom deficiencies in the texture sample led to an increased hole concentration, further boosting the electrical conductivity and power factor. The power factor exceeded 4.10 µW/cm·K2 at 423 K and 5.50 µW/cm·K2 at 850 K. The phonon scattering was strengthened by adjusting the multiscale microstructures including dislocations, defect clusters, etc., leading to an ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of 0.23 W/m·K at 850 K. A figure of merit zT > 1.3 at 850 K and an average zTave of 0.58 in the temperature range 373-850 K were achieved in the SnS polycrystal.

RESUMO

Baculovirus has been widely used for foreign protein expression in biomedical studies, and budded virus (BV) surface display has developed into an important research tool for heterogenous membrane protein studies. The basic strategy of surface display is to construct a recombinant virus where the target gene is fused with a complete or partial gp64 gene. In this study, we further investigate and develop this BV surface displaying strategy. We constructed stable insect cell lines to express the target protein flanking with different regions of signal peptide (SP) and GP64 transmembrane domain (TMD). Subsequently, recombinant BmNPV was used to infect the cell, and the integration of heterogeneous protein into BV was detected. The results indicated that deletion of the n-region of SP (SPΔn) decreased the incorporation rate more than that of the full-length SP. However, the incorporation rate of the protein fused with h and c-region deletion of SP (SPΔh-c) was significantly enhanced by 35-40 times compare to full-length SP. Moreover, the foreign protein without SP and TMD failed to display on the BV, while the integration of foreign proteins with GP64 TMD fusion at the c-terminal was significantly enhanced by 12-26 times compared to the control. Thus, these new strategies developed the BV surface display system further.

RESUMO

This study aimed to assess the feasibility and safety of robot-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) for resecting benign tumors of the cervicothoracic junction. Between 2017 and 2021, a total of 54 patients with benign cervicothoracic junction tumors were included. Among them, 46 underwent RATS while 8 underwent open surgery. Using a propensity score based on four variables (age, sex, comorbidity, and tumor size). The outcomes compared included short-term outcomes such as blood loss, as well as long-term outcomes including respiratory function and patients' postoperative health-related quality of life. No operative deaths occurred in this study. RATS was associated with less intraoperative blood loss (102 < 380 ml, P = 0.001) and a shorter length of hospital stay (1.8 < 4.8, P < 0.001). After a median follow-up of 37 months, no recurrences were reported, and no statistically significant differences were found in the 3-year survival between the two groups. The postoperative respiratory function of patients with open surgery showed a significant decrease compared to preoperative levels and were lower than those of RATS patients. In terms of health-related quality of life, RATS was associated with a better mean EQ-5D-5L index than open surgery (0.808 > 0.650, P < 0.05). In RATS, tumor sizes > 5 cm (mean ± SD = 0.768 ± 0.111, P = 0.028) and neurogenic tumors (mean ± SD = 0.702 ± 0.082, P < 0.001) remained significantly and independently associated with a lower EQ-5D-5L index. This study demonstrated that robot-assisted thoracic surgery for benign tumors of the cervicothoracic junction is a safe and technically feasible procedure, particularly for tumors < 5 cm and non-neurogenic tumors.

RESUMO

The paper proposes an ultra-wideband frequency selective rasorber (FSR) with low infrared emissivity for the composite detection threat of both radars and infrared sensors. Firstly, the equivalent circuit (EC) method based on transmission line (TL) theory is utilized to analyze the absorption/transmission conditions. Then, based on the analysis above, sinusoidal microstrip lines with non-frequency-varying characteristics are adopted in the design, which significantly enhances the transmission bandwidth of FSR. The FSR demonstrates an absorption band ranging from 2.65 GHz to 8.80 GHz and a transmission band ranging from 9.15 GHz to 17.71 GHz. Furthermore, an infrared shielding layer (IRSL) exhibiting low emissivity in the infrared band and high transmittance in the microwave band is applied to the FSR. The simulation and experiment results verify that the IRSL-FSR demonstrates an ultra-wide transmission band ranging from 9.16 GHz to 17.94 GHz and an ultra-wide absorption band ranging from 2.66 GHz to 8.01 GHz. Additionally, it exhibits a low emissivity value (0.23) in 8-14 µm, providing a viable solution to the formidable challenge of radar-infrared bistealth for satellites and other communication-enabled flying platforms.

RESUMO

Introduction: The industrial processing of corn (Zeamays L.) generates by-products such as corn silk, straw peels, and straw core, which contribute to adverse environmental impacts. Our study aimed to investigate sustainable approaches for mitigating these effects by evaluating the hypoglycemic potential and mechanisms of ethyl acetate fractions derived from these corn derivatives. Methods: We employed glucose consumption assays, high glucose stress tests, UPLC-QE-Orbitrap-MS analysis, molecular docking, and simulations to assess their components and efficacy. Antioxidant capacities were evaluated using DPPH, FRAP, ABTS, and •OH scavenging assays. Results: Notably, the ethyl acetate fraction extracted from straw peels (SPE) exhibited a high concentration of flavonoids and phenolic compounds along with pronounced hypoglycemic activity and antioxidant capacity. SPE significantly enhanced glucose consumption in insulin-resistant HepG2 cells while protecting HUVECs against damage caused by high glucose levels. Molecular docking analyses confirmed the interaction between active compounds and α-glucosidase as well as α-amylase, while molecular dynamic simulations indicated stability at their binding sites. Discussion: In conclusion, the hypoglycemic and antioxidative properties observed in corn by-products such as straw peels, corn silk, and straw core can be attributed to the inhibition of α-glucosidase and α-amylase activities, coupled with their rich phenolic and flavonoid content. These findings highlight the potential of these by-products for applications in healthcare management and their sustainable utilization, demonstrating significant value in the use of agricultural residues.

RESUMO

To enhance the accuracy of identifying fresh meat varieties using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), we utilized the LightGBM model in combination with the Optuna algorithm. The procedure involved flattening fresh meat slices with glass slides and collecting spectral data of the plasma from the surfaces of the fresh meat tissues (pork, beef, and chicken) using LIBS technology. A total of 900 spectra were collected. Initially, we established LightGBM and SVM (support vector machine) models for the collected spectra. Subsequently, we applied information gain and peak extraction algorithms to select the features for each model. We then employed Optuna to optimize the hyperparameters of the LightGBM model, while a 10-fold cross-validation was conducted to determine the optimal parameters for SVM. Ultimately, the LightGBM model achieved higher accuracy, macro-F1, and Cohen's kappa coefficient (kappa coefficient) values of 0.9370, 0.9364, and 0.9244, respectively, compared to the SVM model's values of 0.8888, 0.8881, and 0.8666. This study provides a novel method for the rapid classification of fresh meat varieties using LIBS.

RESUMO

Esophageal cancer ranks among the most prevalent malignant tumors globally. The prognosis for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma remains poor, with a 5-year survival rate below 20 % due to limited advances in therapy. Ferroptosis, a novel form of iron-dependent lipid peroxidation-driven regulated cell death (RCD), shows significant promise in cancer treatment. Berbamine (BBM), a natural bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid derived from Berberis amurensis, exhibits anti-tumor effects against various cancers, yet its impact on esophageal cancer remains to be elucidated. This study aimed to explore the role of BBM in inducing ferroptosis in the treatment of esophageal cancer, focusing on its molecular mechanisms. Gene set enrichment analysis(GSEA) analysis highlighted the potential of BBM as an anti-cancer agent through ferroptosis induction. We found that BBM inhibited growth and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in esophageal cancer cell lines, promoting Fe accumulation, ROS, and malondialdehyde (MDA) production, thereby triggering cell death. These suppressive effects were successfully reversed by Ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1). Mechanistically, BBM decreased deubiquitination enzyme USP51 levels, leading to ubiquitin degradation and glutathione peroxidase 4(GPX4) instability, and it stimulated ferroptosis. The Overexpression of USP51 mitigated the downregulation of GPX4 induced by BBM.BBM significantly inhibited tumor xenograft growth in nude mice. This discovery positions BBM as a promising therapeutic candidate for the treatment of esophageal cancer.

RESUMO

Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease caused by an imbalance between bone resorption and formation. Current treatments primarily involve systemic medication and hormone therapy. However, these systemic treatments lack directionality and are often ineffective for locally severe osteoporosis, with the potential for complex adverse reactions. Consequently, treatment strategies using bioactive materials or external interventions have emerged as the most promising approaches. This review proposes twelve microenvironmental treatment targets for osteoporosis-related pathological changes, including local accumulation of inflammatory factors and reactive oxygen species (ROS), imbalance of mitochondrial dynamics, insulin resistance, disruption of bone cell autophagy, imbalance of bone cell apoptosis, changes in neural secretions, aging of bone cells, increased local bone tissue vascular destruction, and decreased regeneration. Additionally, this review examines the current research status of effective or potential biophysical and biochemical stimuli based on these microenvironmental treatment targets and summarizes the advantages and optimal parameters of different bioengineering stimuli to support preclinical and clinical research on osteoporosis treatment and bone regeneration. Finally, the review addresses ongoing challenges and future research prospects.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Immunotherapy has emerged as a potent clinical approach for cancer treatment, but only subsets of cancer patients can benefit from it. Targeting lactate metabolism (LM) in tumor cells as a method to potentiate anti-tumor immune responses represents a promising therapeutic strategy. METHODS: Public single-cell RNA-Seq (scRNA-seq) cohorts collected from patients who received immunotherapy were systematically gathered and scrutinized to delineate the association between LM and the immunotherapy response. A novel LM-related signature (LM.SIG) was formulated through an extensive examination of 40 pan-cancer scRNA-seq cohorts. Then, multiple machine learning (ML) algorithms were employed to validate the capacity of LM.SIG for immunotherapy response prediction and survival prognostication based on 8 immunotherapy transcriptomic cohorts and 30 The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) pan-cancer datasets. Moreover, potential targets for immunotherapy were identified based on 17 CRISPR datasets and validated via in vivo and in vitro experiments. RESULTS: The assessment of LM was confirmed to possess a substantial relationship with immunotherapy resistance in 2 immunotherapy scRNA-seq cohorts. Based on large-scale pan-cancer data, there exists a notably adverse correlation between LM.SIG and anti-tumor immunity as well as imbalance infiltration of immune cells, whereas a positive association was observed between LM.SIG and pro-tumorigenic signaling. Utilizing this signature, the ML model predicted immunotherapy response and prognosis with an AUC of 0.73/0.80 in validation sets and 0.70/0.87 in testing sets respectively. Notably, LM.SIG exhibited superior predictive performance across various cancers compared to published signatures. Subsequently, CRISPR screening identified LDHA as a pan-cancer biomarker for estimating immunotherapy response and survival probability which was further validated using immunohistochemistry (IHC) and spatial transcriptomics (ST) datasets. Furthermore, experiments demonstrated that LDHA deficiency in pancreatic cancer elevated the CD8+ T cell antitumor immunity and improved macrophage antitumoral polarization, which in turn enhanced the efficacy of immunotherapy. CONCLUSIONS: We unveiled the tight correlation between LM and resistance to immunotherapy and further established the pan-cancer LM.SIG, holds the potential to emerge as a competitive instrument for the selection of patients suitable for immunotherapy.

RESUMO

Electric field-induced second harmonic generation allows electrically controlling nonlinear light-matter interactions crucial for emerging integrated photonics applications. Despite its wide presence in materials, the figures-of-merit of electric field-induced second harmonic generation are yet to be elevated to enable novel device functionalities. Here, we show that the polar skyrmions, a topological phase spontaneously formed in PbTiO3/SrTiO3 ferroelectric superlattices, exhibit a high comprehensive electric field-induced second harmonic generation performance. The second-order nonlinear susceptibility and modulation depth, measured under non-resonant 800 nm excitation, reach ~54.2 pm V-1 and ~664% V-1, respectively, and high response bandwidth (higher than 10 MHz), wide operating temperature range (up to ~400 K) and good fatigue resistance (>1010 cycles) are also demonstrated. Through combined in-situ experiments and phase-field simulations, we establish the microscopic links between the exotic polarization configuration and field-induced transition paths of the skyrmions and their electric field-induced second harmonic generation response. Our study not only presents a highly competitive thin-film material ready for constructing on-chip devices, but opens up new avenues of utilizing topological polar structures in the fields of photonics and optoelectronics.

RESUMO

This study investigated the synergistic potential of an oncolytic herpes simplex virus armed with interleukin 12 (VT1092M) in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors for enhancing antitumor responses. The potential of this combination treatment to induce systemic antitumor immunity was assessed using bilateral subcutaneous tumor and tumor re-challenge mouse models. The antitumor efficacy of various OV and ICI treatment combinations and the underlying mechanisms were explored through diverse analytical techniques, including flow cytometry and RNA sequencing. Using VT1092M, either alone or in combination with an anti-PD-L1 antibody, significantly reduced the sizes of both the injected and untreated abscopal tumors in a bilateral tumor mouse model. The combination therapy demonstrated superior antitumor efficacy to the other treatment conditions tested, which was accompanied by an increase in T cell numbers and CD8+T cell activation. Results from the survival and tumor re-challenge experiments showed that the combination therapy elicited long-term, tumor-specific immune responses, which were associated with tumor clearance and prolonged survival. Immune cell depletion assays identified CD8+T cells as the crucial mediators of systemic antitumor immunity during combination therapy. In conclusion, the combination of VT1092M and PD-L1 blockade emerged as a potent inducer of antitumor immune responses, surpassing the efficacy of each monotherapy. This synergistic approach holds promise for achieving robust and sustained antitumor immunity, with potential implications for preventing tumor metastasis in patients with cancer.

RESUMO

Relaxor ferroelectric (RFE) films are promising energy-storage candidates for miniaturizing high-power electronic systems, which is credited to their high energy density (Ue) and efficiency. However, advancing their Ue beyond 200 joules per cubic centimeter is challenging, limiting their potential for next-generation energy-storage devices. We implemented a partitioning polar-slush strategy in RFEs to push the boundary of Ue. Guided by phase-field simulations, we designed and fabricated high-performance Bi(Mg0.5Ti0.5)O3-SrTiO3-based RFE films with isolated slush-like polar clusters, which were realized through suppression of the nonpolar cubic matrix and introduction of highly insulating networks. The simultaneous enhancement of the reversible polarization and breakdown strength leads to a Ue of 202 joules per cubic centimeter with a high efficiency of ~79%. The proposed strategy provides a design freedom for next-generation high-performance dielectrics.
