RESUMO

Grain and flag leaf size are two important agronomic traits that influence grain yield in rice (Oryza sativa). Many QTLs and genes that regulate these traits individually have been identified, however, few QTLs and genes that simultaneously control these two traits have been identified. In this study, we conducted a genome-wide association analysis in rice and detected a major locus, WIDTH OF LEAF AND GRAIN (WLG), that associated with both grain and flag leaf width. WLG encodes a RING-domain E3 ubiquitin ligase. WLGhap.B, which possesses five SNP variations compared to WLGhap.A, encodes a protein with enhanced ubiquitination activity that confers increased rice leaf width and grain size, whereas mutation of WLG leads to narrower leaves and smaller grains. Both WLGhap.A and WLGhap.B interact with LARGE2, a HETC-type E3 ligase, however, WLGhap.B exhibits stronger interaction with LARGE2, thus higher ubiquitination activity towards LARGE2 compared with WLGhap.A. Lysine1021 is crucial for the ubiquitination of LARGE2 by WLG. Loss-of-function of LARGE2 in wlg-1 phenocopies large2-c in grain and leaf width, suggesting that WLG acts upstream of LARGE2. These findings reveal the genetic and molecular mechanism by which the WLG-LARGE2 module mediates grain and leaf size in rice, and suggest the potential of WLGhap.B in improving rice yield.

RESUMO

The distribution of water in the Moon's interior carries implications for the origin of the Moon1, the crystallization of the lunar magma ocean2 and the duration of lunar volcanism2. The Chang'e-5 mission returned some of the youngest mare basalt samples reported so far, dated at 2.0 billion years ago (Ga)3, from the northwestern Procellarum KREEP Terrane, providing a probe into the spatiotemporal evolution of lunar water. Here we report the water abundances and hydrogen isotope compositions of apatite and ilmenite-hosted melt inclusions from the Chang'e-5 basalts. We derive a maximum water abundance of 283 ± 22 µg g-1 and a deuterium/hydrogen ratio of (1.06 ± 0.25) × 10-4 for the parent magma. Accounting for low-degree partial melting of the depleted mantle followed by extensive magma fractional crystallization4, we estimate a maximum mantle water abundance of 1-5 µg g-1, suggesting that the Moon's youngest volcanism was not driven by abundant water in its mantle source. Such a modest water content for the Chang'e-5 basalt mantle source region is at the low end of the range estimated from mare basalts that erupted from around 4.0 Ga to 2.8 Ga (refs. 5,6), suggesting that the mantle source of the Chang'e-5 basalts had become dehydrated by 2.0 Ga through previous melt extraction from the Procellarum KREEP Terrane mantle during prolonged volcanic activity.

RESUMO

Remote sensing data revealed that the presence of water (OH/H2O) on the Moon is latitude-dependent and probably time-of-day variation, suggesting a solar wind (SW)-originated water with a high degassing loss rate on the lunar surface. However, it is unknown whether or not the SW-derived water in lunar soil grains can be preserved beneath the surface. We report ion microprobe analyses of hydrogen abundances, and deuterium/hydrogen ratios of the lunar soil grains returned by the Chang'e-5 mission from a higher latitude than previous missions. Most of the grain rims (topmost ~100 nm) show high abundances of hydrogen (1,116 to 2,516 ppm) with extremely low δD values (-908 to -992‰), implying nearly exclusively a SW origin. The hydrogen-content depth distribution in the grain rims is phase-dependent, either bell-shaped for glass or monotonic decrease for mineral grains. This reveals the dynamic equilibrium between implantation and outgassing of SW-hydrogen in soil grains on the lunar surface. Heating experiments on a subset of the grains further demonstrate that the SW-implanted hydrogen could be preserved after burial. By comparing with the Apollo data, both observations and simulations provide constraints on the governing role of temperature (latitude) on hydrogen implantation/migration in lunar soils. We predict an even higher abundance of hydrogen in the grain rims in the lunar polar regions (average ~9,500 ppm), which corresponds to an estimation of the bulk water content of ~560 ppm in the polar soils assuming the same grain size distribution as Apollo soils, consistent with the orbit remote sensing result.

RESUMO

Surfactant-like contaminants (SLCs) with distinctive amphiphilic structures have become a global concern in wastewater due to their toxicity and persistency. Despite extensive efforts, achieving efficient and selective SLCs removal remains challenging because of their wide range of molecular weights and complex functional group compositions. Superhydrophobic nanoparticles can potentially tackle this challenge by targeting the long oleophilic chains of SLCs. However, conventional contact angle measurements hinder hydrophobicity characterization and corresponding selectivity research because of the powder morphology of nanoparticles. Herein, the authors offered information regarding the distribution of water molecular probes in surfaces and proposed a quantitative characterization approach based on low-field nuclear magnetic resonance. Through synthesizing superhydrophobic and hydrophilic polydopamine nanospheres with similar morphologies, the selective adsorption potential of superhydrophobic nanoparticles for SLCs is systematically demonstrated. As revealed by the interaction mechanisms, the superhydrophobic surface of nanospheres increased its affinity and selectivity for SLCs adsorption by enhancing hydrophobic interactions. Superhydrophobic modification achieved ten times the adsorption capacity of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, an exemplified surfactant, compared with pristine nanoparticles. By regulated self-polymerization, the superhydrophobic nanospheres are coated onto the surface of a 3D sponge and enable efficient selective SLCs adsorption from highly polluted leachate matrices with long-term stability and reusability.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to explore the correlation between inflammatory indicators and blood lipids and to further provide a theoretical basis for the diagnosis and treatment of clinical polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODS: Whole-blood cell counts and hormone and blood lipid levels were measured in 110 patients with PCOS and 126 healthy women. The differences in the above levels and the correlation between inflammation and blood lipid levels in the two groups were determined, and classified according to BMI. Differences in inflammatory indices were also analyzed. The independent risk factors for PCOS were analyzed by binary logistic regression. RESULTS: The PCOS group had greater BMI and greater body weight than the control group. The inflammatory indicators WBC, neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte counts and the NLR were significantly higher than those of the control group. It had higher testosterone (TSTO), triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) levels. Correlation analysis showed that leukocyte and neutrophil counts were positively correlated with TSTO and TG levels and negatively correlated with HDL. In the BMI ≥ 24 and BMI < 24 groups, WBC was higher in PCOS patients than in healthy controls. Logistic regression showed that TSTO, TG and FSH were independent risk factors for PCOS. CONCLUSION: Inflammatory markers are correlated with blood lipids in PCOS. During the treatment of PCOS, blood lipids and serum inflammatory factors should be monitored.

RESUMO

The interactive effects of obesity and physical inactivity on lipid metabolism and prevalent dyslipidemia are scarcely reported in rural regions. 39029 subjects were obtained from the Henan Rural Cohort, and their metabolic equivalents (METs) of physical activity (PA) were computed. Independent associations of the obesity indices and PA with either lipid indices or prevalent dyslipidemia were analyzed by generalized linear models, and additive effects of obesity and PA on prevalent dyslipidemia were further quantified. Each obesity index was positively associated with total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein or prevalent dyslipidemia but negatively associated with high-density lipoprotein, whereas the opposite association of PA with either each lipid index or prevalent dyslipidemia was observed. Joint association of PA and each obesity index with each lipid index and prevalent dyslipidemia was observed. Furthermore, the association of each obesity index in association with each lipid index was attenuated by increased PA levels.

RESUMO

Background: Changes in bone metabolism during pregnancy have not received sufficient attention because of the lack of effective screening tools. Bone turnover markers (BTMs) could reflect the changes of bone metabolism. Currently, reference intervals for bone metabolism during normal pregnancy are inconclusive. This study aimed to determine reference intervals for BTMs in pregnant women taking prenatal care and to facilitate clinical research on diseases affecting bone metabolism during pregnancy. Methods: We surveyed 120 low-risk pregnant women attending routine antenatal care from January 2020 to March 2020. The serum levels of procollagen type I N-propeptide (PINP), N-terminal osteocalcin (N-MID), and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (ß-CTX) were measured in the first trimester (<13 weeks), second trimester (14-27 weeks), and third trimester (>28 weeks). Reference intervals for BTMs during pregnancy were analyzed. The Kruskal-Wallis test and paired t-test are used to analyze differences between groups. Spearman correlation coefficients expressed the measure of linear association. Results: The bone resorption marker ß-CTX in third trimester increases compared to the first trimester and the second trimester (P < 0.001, P < 0.001). The bone formation markers PINP and N-MID were decreased from the first trimester to the second trimester (P = 0.01, P < 0.001) and then raised from the second trimester to the third trimester (P < 0.001, P < 0.001). Two indices of bone turnover rate, ß-CTX/PINP and ß-CTX/N-MID, were increased from the first trimester to the second trimester (P < 0.001, P < 0.001) and then decreased from the second trimester to the third trimester (P = 0.02, P < 0.001). Conclusion: This study established reference intervals for BTMs in pregnant women and observed the changes in BTMs during the different trimesters of pregnancy. The present findings can help in clinical monitoring of the effects of pregnancy diseases on the bone metabolism of pregnant women.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To preserve the meniscus's function, repairing the torn meniscus has become a common understanding. After which, the search for the ideal suture material is continuous. However, it is still controversial about the efficacy of suture absorbability on meniscus healing. METHODS: This review is designed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. INCLUSION CRITERIA: (1) Studies on meniscus repair; (2) Second-look arthroscopy was performed; (3) The meniscus was repaired by absorbable and non-absorbable sutures; (4) The healing condition of repaired meniscus via second-look arthroscopy was described. EXCLUSION CRITERIA: (1) Animal studies, cadaveric studies, or in vitro research; (2) Meniscus transplantation; (3) Open meniscus repair; (4) Reviews, meta-analysis, case reports, letters, and comments; (5) non-English studies. MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Database were searched up to October 2022. Risk of bias and methodology quality of included literature were assessed according to ROBINS-I and the modified Coleman Methodological Scale (MCMS). Descriptive analysis was performed, and meta-analysis was completed by RevMan5.4.1. RESULTS: Four studies were included in the systematic review. Among them, three studies were brought into the meta-analysis, including 1 cohort study and 2 case series studies about 130 patients with meniscal tears combined with anterior cruciate ligament injury. Forty-two cases were repaired by absorbable sutures, and 88 were repaired by non-absorbable sutures. Using the fixed effect model, there was a statistical difference in the healing success rate between the absorbable and the non-absorbable groups [RR1.20, 95%CI (1.03, 1.40)]. CONCLUSION: In early and limited studies, insufficient evidence supports that non-absorbable sutures in meniscus repair surgery could improve meniscal healing success rate under second-look arthroscopy compared with absorbable sutures. In contrast, available data suggest that absorbable sutures have an advantage in meniscal healing. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The review was registered in the PROSPERO System Review International Pre-Registration System (Registration number CRD42021283739).

RESUMO

Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s) are a superfamily of multifunctional heme-containing proteins and could function as odorant-degrading enzymes (ODEs) in insect olfactory systems. In our previous study, we identified a P450 gene from the antennal transcriptome of Locusta migratoria, LmCYP6MU1, which could be induced by a variety of volatiles. However, the regulatory mechanisms of this gene in response to volatiles remain unknown. In current study, we investigated the tissues and development stages expression patterns of LmCYP6MU1 and determined its olfactory function in the recognition of the main host plant volatiles which induced LmCYP6MU1 expression. The results showed that LmCYP6MU1 was antenna-rich and highly expressed throughout the antennal developmental stages of locusts. LmCYP6MU1 played important roles in the recognition of trans-2-hexen-1-al and nonanal. Insect CncC regulates the expression of P450 genes. We tested whether LmCncC regulates LmCYP6MU1 expression. It was found that LmCncC knockdown in the antennae resulted in the downregulation of LmCYP6MU1 and repressed the volatiles-mediated induction of LmCYP6MU1. LmCncC knockdown reduced the electroantennogram (EAG) and behavioral responses of locusts to volatiles. These results suggested that LmCncC could regulate the basal and volatiles-mediated inducible expression of LmCYP6MU1 responsible for the recognition of trans-2-hexen-1-al and nonanal. These findings provide an original basis for understanding the regulation mechanisms of LmCncC on LmCYP6MU1 expression and help us better understand the LmCncC-mediated olfactory plasticity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The composition of the human diet is complex and diverse, and the relation-ship between dietary composition and cognitive decline has not been adequately studied. Therefore, this study explored the possible association between food items and the risk of cognitive impairment. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: This cross-sectional study was based on an ecological longevity cohort and included 2881 participants (1086 men and 1795 women) aged ≥30 years between December 2018 and November 2019. The association between food items and the risk of cognitive impairment was explored using the Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) learning model. RESULTS: Finally, 2881 participants (1086 men and 1795 women) were included. In all participants, the multivariable logistic analysis showed that fresh fruit consumption was associated with cognitive function (OR=0.999, 95% CI: 0.998-0.999, p=0.021). Using the BKMR model, none of the 18 food items were significantly correlated with cognitive function among women. In men, when the other food items were fixed at the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentile values (P25, estimate=-0.239; P50, estimate=-0.210; P75, estimate=-0.158), there was a negative correlation between fresh fruit consumption and the predicted risk of cognitive function disorders. CONCLUSIONS: Men displayed a negative association be-tween fresh fruit consumption and the risk of cognitive function disorders, but this was not apparent among women.

RESUMO

Evidence shows the relationships of individual environmental PAHs by their urinary metabolites with relative telomere length (RTL), which may be affected by biological gender differences. Since plasma parent PAHs are not metabolized, it may reflect human exposure to PAHs more realistically in daily life. Thus, exploring joint associations between plasma parent PAHs and RTL is urgent, which may identify the major contributor to its adverse effect. In this study, 2577 participants were obtained from the Henan Rural Cohort. The level of PAHs in blood samples was detected by gas chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. RTL in blood samples was detected by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Generalized linear models or quantile g-computation were performed to evaluate the associations between the individual or a mixture of PAHs and RTL. Results from generalized linear models showed that each unit increment in BghiP value corresponded to a 0.098 (95%CI: 0.067, 0.129) increment in RTL for men; each unit increment in BaP, BghiP and Flu value corresponded to a 0.041 (95%CI: 0.014, 0.068), 0.081 (95%CI: 0.055, 0.107) and 0.016 (95%CI: 0.005, 0.027) increment in RTL for women. Results from quantile-g computation revealed that each one-quantile increment in the mixture of 10 PAHs corresponded to a 0.057 (95%CI: 0.021, 0.094) and 0.047 (95%CI: 0.003, 0.091) increment in RTL values of women and men, but these associations were mainly ascribed to three PAHs for women (BaP, Flu and BghiP) and men (BaP, BghiP and Pyr), respectively. Similar results were found in smoking men and cooking women without smoking. Our study found that exposure to 10 PAHs mixture was positively associated with RTL across gender, mainly attributed to Flu, BaP and BghiP, implicating that gender-specific associations may be ascribed to tobacco and cooking smoke pollution. The findings provided clues for effective measures to control PAHs pollutants-related aging disease.Clinical trial registration The Henan Rural Cohort Study has been registered at the Chinese Clinical Trial Register (Registration number: ChiCTR-OOC-15006699). RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Peri-implantitis is the most difficult biological complication associated with dental implants, often requiring surgical treatments in advanced stages. This study compares the effectiveness of different surgical methods for peri-implantitis. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of different surgical treatments for peri-implantitis were extracted from EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library databases, and PubMed systematically. Pairwise comparisons and network meta-analyses (NMA) were conducted to analyze the effect of surgical treatments on probing depth (PD), radiographic bone fill (RBF), mucosal recession (MR), bleeding on probing (BOP), and clinical attachment level (CAL). In addition, risk of bias, quality of evidence, and statistical heterogeneity of the selected studies were evaluated. A total of 13 articles were included in this study, involving open flap debridement (OFD), resective therapy (RT), and augmentative therapy (AT) with and without adjunctive treatments (laser therapy, photodynamic therapy, local antibiotics, phosphoric acid, and ozone therapy). RESULTS: AT improved RBF and CAL more than OFD, but does not outperform OFD in reducing peri-implant soft-tissue inflammation. AT, OFD and RT did not significantly alter the levels of MR. Addition of ozone therapy improved the effect of AT, but addition of photodynamic therapy did not affect PD reduction and CAL gain significantly. Similarly, adjuvant treatment with phosphoric acid during RT did not significantly change the outcome of BOP. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitation of this systematic review and NMA, AT was superior to OFD in improving peri-implantitis outcomes. While adjunct use of ozone therapy may further improve the efficacy of AT, the limited evidence supporting this combination therapy argues for cautionary interpretation of these results.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure to ambient ozone links to aging biomarkers and increased risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD). However, the roles of aging biomarkers in the association of long-term exposure to ambient ozone with ASCVD are unclear. METHODS: A total of 5298 participants completed the questionnaire and physical examination and provided biological specimens. Aging biomarkers (telomere length [TL] and mitochondrial copy number [mtDNA-CN]) were measured by using a real-time polymerase chain reaction method. The concentration of ambient ozone was assessed using a random forest model. Associations of ambient ozone or aging biomarkers with 10-year ASCVD risk were analyzed using logistic regression models. The roles of aging biomarkers in the association of ambient ozone exposure with 10-year ASCVD risk were explored by mediation analysis. RESULTS: The adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence interval of high 10-year ASCVD risk were 1.16 (1.08, 1.25), 0.71 (0.60, 0.85), and 0.78 (0.64, 0.96) in association with each 1-unit increment in ambient ozone (1 µg/m3 ) concentration, relative TL, and mtDNA-CN, respectively. The mediated proportion of the association between ambient ozone exposure and high 10-year ASCVD risk by TL or mtDNA-CN was 21.13% or 7.75%, respectively. The total proportion of association between ambient ozone exposure and high 10-year ASCVD risk mediated by TL plus mtDNA-CN was 21.02%. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term exposure to ambient ozone was associated with increased 10-year ASCVD risk, and the association was partially mediated by aging biomarkers (shortened TL and decreased mtDNA-CN). This study indicated that ambient ozone pollution-related ASCVD risk might be partially explained by the telomere-mitochondrial axis of aging.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Only one additional specific SNP in blaTEM-135 in penicillinase-producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae (PPNG) isolates is required for TEM-135 to evolve into an ESBL that is capable of degrading all extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs). METHODS: Identification of the blaTEM-135 gene was achieved by performing a mismatch amplification mutation assay PCR. PPNG isolates were then genotyped using MLST and N. gonorrhoeae multiantigen sequence typing (NG-MAST) techniques. Finally, phylogenetic analyses based on MLST and NG-MAST were performed on all of the PPNG isolates, and genogroups were classified according to the phylogenetic relatedness on the basis of each MLST and NG-MAST gene typing and the blaTEM allele varieties. RESULTS: Among the 197 PPNG isolates, one (0.5%) isolate possessed the blaTEM-220 allele, 90 (45.7%) possessed the blaTEM-135 allele, and 106 (53.8%) possessed the blaTEM-1 allele. Among the blaTEM-135-carrying PPNG isolates, MLST ST8109 (n = 30) and NG-MAST ST12199 (n = 5), ST12754 (n = 5) and ST15073 (n = 5) were the most prevalent in the Shandong province of China. The phylogenetic analyses revealed that MLST ST8109, ST8140 and ST14417, mainly carrying the blaTEM-135 allele, belonged to the same genogroup, G1, while NG-MAST ST12199 and ST15073, mainly carrying the blaTEM-135 allele, belonged to the same genogroup, Ga. CONCLUSIONS: This study has shown that the molecular epidemiology of PPNG isolates carrying the blaTEM-135 allele in Shandong has a dynamically changing status. Therefore, it is very pressing to continuously monitor the prevalence and mutation of the blaTEM-135 allele and the genetic epidemiology of PPNG isolates carrying the blaTEM-135 allele in this district.

RESUMO

The mechanical properties of guard cell (GC) walls are important for stomatal development and stomatal response to external stimuli. However, the molecular mechanisms of pectin synthesis and pectin composition controlling stomatal development and dynamics remain poorly explored. Here, we characterized the role of two Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) galacturonosyltransferases, GAUT10 and GAUT11, in plant growth, stomatal development, and stomatal dynamics. GAUT10 and GAUT11 double mutations reduced pectin synthesis and promoted homogalacturonan (HG) demethylesterification and demethylesterified HG degradation, resulting in larger stomatal complexes and smaller pore areas, increased stomatal dynamics, and enhanced drought tolerance of plants. In contrast, increased GAUT10 or GAUT11 expression impaired stomatal dynamics and drought sensitivity. Genetic interaction analyses together with immunolabeling analyses suggest that the methylesterified HG level is important in stomatal dynamics, and pectin abundance with the demethylesterified HG level controls stomatal dimension and stomatal size. Our results provide insight into the molecular mechanism of GC wall properties in stomatal dynamics, and highlight the role of GAUT10 and GAUT11 in stomatal dimension and dynamics through modulation of pectin biosynthesis and distribution in GC walls.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Obesity and ambient air pollution are independent risk factors of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), however, the evidence regarding their joint associations on T2DM was sparsely studied in low-middle income countries. METHODS: A total of 38,841 participants were selected from Henan Rural Cohort study which was carried out during 2015-2017. Obesity was identified by body mass index (BMI), WC (waist circumstance), WHR (waist-to-hip ratio), WHtR (waist-to-height ratio), BFP (body fat percent), and VFI (visceral fat index). Three-year averaged-concentrations of NO2, PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 were assessed by using the method of spatiotemporal model incorporated into the satellites data. The independent associations of obesity indicators and exposure to air pollutants on fasting blood glucose (FBG) and T2DM were assessed by generalized linear and logistic regression model, respectively, and their interaction associations on T2DM were quantified by using relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), attributable proportion due to interaction (AP), and synergy index (S). RESULTS: Positive associations of six obesity measures and four air pollutants with FBG levels and prevalent T2DM were observed. Obese participants measured by BMI plus high exposure to NO2, PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 were related to a 2.96-fold (2.66-3.29), 2.87-fold (2.58-3.20), 2.98-fold (2.67-3.32) and 3.01-fold (2.70-3.35) increased risk for prevalent T2DM, respectively; similarity of joint associations of the other obesity measures and air pollutants on T2DM were observed. The additive associations of different obesity measures and air pollutants with prevalent T2DM were further found. CONCLUSIONS: The synergistic associations of obesity and air pollutants on FBG levels and prevalent T2DM were observed, indicating that obese participants were at high risk for prevalent T2DM in highly polluted rural regions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Evidence on the association of snoring, daily sleep duration (daytime napping and night sleep duration) with hyperuricemia (HUA) was limited, especially in the resources-poor areas. This study aimed to investigate the independent effect of snoring frequency and daily sleep duration on HUA prevalence in rural Chinese adults. METHODS AND RESULTS: 29,643 participants aged 18-79 years were included in the final cross-sectional analysis from the Henan Rural Cohort Study. Multivariate logistic regression and linear regression models with HUA and serum uric acid (SUA) levels as dependent variables were conducted, respectively. Of the 29,643 included adults, 3498 suffered from HUA. Compared to never snoring, the adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of HUA for rare snoring, occasional snoring, and habitual snoring were 1.35 (1.17, 1.56), 1.30 (1.14, 1.47), and 1.59 (1.47, 1.73), respectively (P for trend <0.001). Compared with no napping, participants who had daytime napping of 61-90 and > 91 min were associated with a 29% and 30% increase in the prevalence of HUA, respectively (P for trend <0.001). But in night sleep duration groups, no significant associations were observed. The positive associations between snoring and HUA were attenuated in people aged ≥65 and people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (both P for interaction <0.05). CONCLUSION: Habitual snoring or longer daytime napping was independently associated with increased HUA prevalence and SUA levels in rural Chinese adults, which indicates the significance of early intervention and treatment of snoring and longer daytime napping to prevent hyperuricemia.

RESUMO

Although solid fuel use for cooking is linked to an increased risk for depression, there is limited evidence on the effects of cooking duration and kitchen ventilation on these associations in rural areas. Among 29 903 participants from the Henan Rural Cohort, the independent and combined associations of cooking fuel type, cooking duration, and kitchen ventilation with depressive and anxiety symptoms were examined by logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline. The adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of solid fuel use for depressive and anxiety symptoms were 1.237 (1.041, 1.469) and 1.384 (1.153, 1.662), respectively. Increased cooking duration was associated with an increased prevalence of depressive symptoms (aOR: 1.098, 95% CI: 1.033, 1.166) and anxiety symptoms (aOR: 1.074, 95% CI: 1.009, 1.144). Solid fuel use and long-duration cooking associated with increased prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms were only observed in individuals without kitchen ventilation. Kitchen ventilation may attenuate the positive associations of solid fuel use and long-duration cooking with the prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms, which suggested popularizing clean fuel and promoting kitchen ventilation may be effective strategies to improve mental health related to household air pollution sourced from solid fuel use and long-duration cooking.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Exposure to heavy metals in the environment is widespread, while the relationship between combined exposure to heavy metals and dyslipidemia is unclear. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed, and 3544 participants aged 30 years or older were included in the analyses. Heavy metal concentrations in plasma were based on inductively coupled plasma‒mass spectrometry. The relationship between heavy metals and dyslipidemia was estimated by logistic regression. BKMR was used to evaluate metal mixtures and their potential interactions. RESULTS: In logistic regression analysis, participants in the fourth quartile of Fe and Zn (Fe > 1352.38 µg/L; Zn > 4401.42 µg/L) had a relatively higher risk of dyslipidemia (Fe, OR = 1.13, 95% CI: 0.92,1.38; Zn, OR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.03,1.64). After sex stratification, females in the third quartile of plasma Zn (1062.05-4401.42 µg/L) had a higher relative risk of dyslipidemia (OR = 1.75, 95% CI: 1.28, 2.38). In BKMR analysis, metal mixtures were negatively associated with dyslipidemia in females when all metal concentrations were above the 50th percentile. In the total population (estimated from 0.030 to 0.031), As was positively associated with dyslipidemia when other metals were controlled at the 25th, 50th, or 75th percentile, respectively, and As was below the 75th percentile. In females (estimated from - 0.037 to -0.031), Zn was negatively associated with dyslipidemia when it was above the 50th percentile. CONCLUSION: This study indicated that As was positively associated with dyslipidemia and that Zn may be negatively associated with dyslipidemia in females. Combined metal exposure was negatively associated with dyslipidemia in females. Females with low plasma Zn levels are more likely to develop dyslipidemia and should receive more clinical attention in this population.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic status (SES) was a crucial influencing factor of household air pollution (HAP). However, few studies have explored the potential effect modification of SES on the associations of HAP with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and glucose homeostasis. METHODS: A total of 20900 participants were obtained from the Henan Rural Cohort. HAP reflected by cooking fuel type and cooking duration was assessed via questionnaire. SES was evaluated by two dimensions: educational level and average monthly income. Associations of cooking fuel type, cooking duration with T2DM and glucose homeostasis indices (insulin, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), and HOMA-ß) were assessed by the generalized linear model. Analyses were also conducted in different SES groups to explore the potential effect modification. RESULTS: Significant negative association of cooking fuel type and cooking duration with T2DM, FPG, and HOMA-ß was not observed. However, cooking with solid fuel and long-duration cooking were associated with decreased insulin level in women, and the adjusted coefficients were - 0.35 (95% confidence interval (95% CI): - 0.53, - 0.17) and - 0.36 (95% CI: -0.50, -0.21), respectively. Results from stratified analyses showed that these associations were more prominent in women with low average monthly income, with corresponding coefficient of - 0.57 (95% CI: -0.77, -0.37) for cooking with solid fuel and - 0.34 (95% CI: -0.52, -0.16) for long-duration cooking. Among women with low average monthly income, the largest decreased insulin level was observed in those who cooked with solid fuel, long-duration and poor kitchen ventilation, while the negative association of cooking fuel type and cooking duration with insulin level was slightly alleviated in the good kitchen ventilation group. CONCLUSIONS: Low average monthly income aggravated the negative association of HAP and insulin level among rural women, while improving kitchen ventilation may be a practical intervention.
