Covering: 2018 to Jun of 2023The efficiency of traditional antibiotics has been undermined by the proliferation of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic microorganisms, necessitating the pursuit of innovative therapeutic agents. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), which are part of host defence peptides found ubiquitously in nature, exhibiting a wide range of activity towards bacteria, fungi, and viruses, offer a highly promising candidate solution. The efficacy of AMPs can frequently be augmented via alterations to their amino acid sequences or structural adjustments. Given the vast reservoir of marine life forms and their distinctive ecosystems, marine AMPs stand as a burgeoning focal point in the quest for alternative peptide templates extracted from natural sources. Advances in identification and characterization techniques have accelerated the discoveries of marine AMPs, thereby stimulating AMP customization, optimization, and synthesis research endeavours. This review presents an overview of recent discoveries related to the intriguing qualities of marine AMPs. Emphasis will be placed upon post-translational modifications (PTMs) of marine AMPs and how they may impact functionality and potency. Additionally, this review considers ways in which marine PTM might support larger-scale, heterologous AMP manufacturing initiatives, providing insights into translational applications of these important biomolecules.

Natural killer (NK) cells were reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of primary antiphospholipid syndrome (pAPS). Immunosuppressive receptor T-cell immunoreceptor with Ig and ITIM domains (TIGIT) and activating receptor cluster of differentiation 226 (CD226) are specifically expressed on NK cells with competitive functions. This study aims to investigate the expression diversities of CD226/TIGIT on NK subsets and their associations with NK subsets activation phenotypes and potential clinical significance, furthermore, to explore potential cause for CD226/TIGIT expression diversities in pAPS. We comparatively assessed the changes of CD56brightNK, CD56dimNK, and NK-like cells in 70 pAPS patients compared with control groups, including systemic lupus erythematosus, asymptomatic antiphospholipid antibodies carriers (asymp-aPLs carriers), and healthy controls and their expression diversities of CD226/TIGIT by flow cytometry. CD25, CD69, CD107α expression, and interferon gamma (IFN-γ) secretion levels of NK subsets were detected to determine the potential association of CD226/TIGIT expression with NK subsets phenotypes. CD226/TIGIT expression levels were compared among different subgroups divided by aPLs status. Moreover, in vitro cultures were conducted to explore the potential mechanisms of CD226/TIGIT expression imbalance. CD56brightNK and CD3+CD56+NK-like cells were significantly increased while CD56dimNK cells were obviously decreased in pAPS, and CD56brightNK and NK-like cells exhibited significantly higher CD226 but lower TIGIT expressions. CD226+CD56brightNK and TIGIT-CD56brightNK cells show higher CD69 expression and IFN-γ secretion capacity, and CD226+NK-like and TIGIT-NK-like cells showed higher expressions of CD25 and CD69 but lower apoptosis rate than CD226- and TIGIT+CD56brightNK/NK-like cells, respectively. The imbalanced CD226/TIGIT expressions were most significant in aPLs triple-positive group. Imbalanced expressions of CD226/TIGIT on CD56brightNK and NK-like cells were aggravated after interleukin-4 (IL-4) stimulation and recovered after tofacitinib blocking. Our data revealed significant imbalanced CD226/TIGIT expressions on NK subsets in pAPS, which closely associated with NK subsets phenotypes and more complicated autoantibody status. CD226/TIGIT imbalanced may be affected by IL-4/Janus Kinase (JAK) pathway activation.

BACKGROUND: Epigenetic alterations contribute greatly to the development and progression of colorectal cancer, and effect of aberrant miR-622 expression is still controversial. This study aimed to discover miR-622 regulation in CRC proliferation. METHODS: miR-622 expression and prognosis were analyzed in clinical CRC samples from Nanfang Hospital. miR-622 regulation on cell cycle and tumor proliferation was discovered, and FOLR2 was screened as functional target of miR-622 using bioinformatics analysis, which was validated via dual luciferase assay and gain-of-function and loss-of-function experiments both in vitro and in vivo. RESULTS: miR-622 overexpression in CRC indicated unfavorable prognosis and it regulated cell cycle to promote tumor growth both in vitro and in vivo. FOLR2 is a specific, functional target of miR-622, which negatively correlates with signature genes in cell cycle process to promote CRC proliferation. CONCLUSIONS: miR-622 upregulates cell cycle process by targeting FOLR2 to promote CRC proliferation, proposing a novel mechanism and treatment target in CRC epigenetic regulation of miR-622.

BACKGROUND: The fasting-postprandial state remains an underrecognized confounding factor for quantifying cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the cognitive assessment and differential diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of fasting-postprandial state on arterial spin labeling (ASL)-based CBF in AD patients. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. SUBJECTS: Ninety-two subjects (mean age = 62.5 ± 6.4 years; females 29.3%), including 30 with AD, 32 with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 30 healthy controls (HCs). Differential diagnostic models were developed with a 4:1 training to testing set ratio. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3-T, T1-weighted imaging using gradient echo and pseudocontinuous ASL imaging using turbo spin echo. ASSESSMENT: Two ASL scans were acquired to quantify fasting state and postprandial state regional CBFs based on an automated anatomical labeling atlas. Two-way ANOVA was used to assess the effects of fasting/postprandial state and disease state (AD, MCI, and HC) on regional CBF. Pearson's correlation analysis was conducted between regional CBF and cognitive scores (Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE] and Montreal Cognitive Assessment [MoCA]). The diagnostic performances of the fasting state, postprandial state, and mixed state (random mixing of the fasting and postprandial state CBF) in differential diagnosis of AD were conducted using support vector machine and logistic regression models. STATISTICAL TESTS: Two-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and area under the curve (AUC) of diagnostic model were performed. P values <0.05 indicated statistical significance. RESULTS: Fasting-state CBF was correlated with cognitive scores in more brain regions (17 vs. 4 [MMSE] and 15 vs. 9 [MoCA]) and had higher absolute correlation coefficients than postprandial-state CBF. In the differential diagnosis of AD patients from MCI patients and HCs, fasting-state CBF outperformed mixed-state CBF, which itself outperformed postprandial-state CBF. DATA CONCLUSION: Compared with postprandial CBF, fasting-state CBF performed better in terms of cognitive score correlations and in differentiating AD patients from MCI patients and HCs. The aim of the study was to explore the significance and prognostic value of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25-(OH) D) deficiency in peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs). One hundred fifty-six patients of newly diagnosed PTCLs were enrolled in the study. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed to determine independent risk factors for progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were plotted, and corresponding areas under the curve (AUC) were calculated to estimate the accuracy of International Prognostic Index (IPI) plus 25-(OH) D deficiency and Prognostic Index for T-cell lymphoma (PIT) plus 25-(OH) D deficiency respectively in PTCL risk stratification. Our results showed that the 25-(OH) D deficiency was an independent inferior prognostic factor for both PFS (P = 0.0019) and OS (P = 0.005) for PTCLs, especially for AITL and PTCL-not otherwise specified (PTCL-NOS). Additionally, adding 25-(OH) D deficiency to PIT indeed has a superior prognostic significance than PIT alone for PFS (P = 0.043) and OS (P = 0.036). Multivariate COX regression analysis revealed that PIT 2‒4, albumin (ALB) ≤ 35 g/L, and 25-(OH) D deficiency were regarded as independent risk factors of PFS and OS. Our results showed that 25-(OH) D deficiency was associated with inferior survival outcome of PTCLs, especially for AITL and PTCL-NOS. PIT plus 25-(OH) D deficiency could better indicate the prognosis for PFS and OS of PTCLs than PIT.

Graves' disease (GD) is an autoimmune disease that primarily affects the thyroid gland. It is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. Genetic studies have shown that human leukocyte antigen (HLA) plays an important role in the development of GD. In this article, we performed a meta-analysis determined to evaluate the relationship between HLA-DRB1 alleles and GD. This meta-analysis included 9 studies (3582 cases in the case group and 23070 cases in the control group) and 27 alleles was performed. The combined results showed that, compared with the control group, GD patients have a significant increase in the frequency of DRB1*1403 (OR=2.50, 95% CI=1.78-3.51, pc<0.0001) and have a significant decrease in frequencies of DRB1* 0101 (OR=0.45, 95% CI=0.34-0.59, pc<0.0001) and DRB1*0701 (OR=0.44, 95% CI=0.35-0.55, pc<0.0001). The meta-analysis indicated that, in Asian populations, DRB1*1403 is a risk allele for GD, and DRB1*0101 and DRB1*0701 are protective against the occurrence of GD. We surprisingly discovered that the susceptibility alleles for GD in Asian populations are completely different from Caucasians and the protective alleles for GD in Asians are quite similar to those of Caucasians. The results of our study may provide new opportunities for gene-targeted therapy for GD in Asian populations.

PURPOSE: Recurrence of adhesions after hysteroscopic adhesiolysis is a challenging clinical problem without a unified management approach. Therefore, we conducted a network meta-analysis that considered both direct and indirect comparisons between interventions to identify optimal strategies for preventing recurrence. METHODS: We searched for research trials published up to July 2023 from PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Database. We selected randomized controlled trials comparing the use of different interventions for the prevention of adhesion recurrence, with no language or regional restrictions. We used random-effects models to assess odds ratios (OR) and mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Adverse events associated with the interventions were also assessed. This study was registered on PROSPERO, CRD42023449068. RESULTS: Data from 21 randomized controlled trials involving 2406 patients were synthesized, including interventions with balloon, amnion, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), intrauterine device (IUD), hyaluronic acid (HA), platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). The top 5 interventions for change in AFS scores were: PRP + Balloon (MD = 5.44; 95% CI, 2.63-8.25), Amnion + Balloon (MD = 5.08; 95% CI, 2.71-7.44), IUD + Balloon (MD = 4.89; 95% CI, 2.49-7.30), HA + Balloon (MD = 3.80; 95% CI, 1.78-5.82), and G-CSF + Balloon (MD = 3.84; 95% CI, 1.05-6.63). There were no statistically significant differences between interventions in the recurrence rate of moderate-to-severe uterine adhesions and the clinical pregnancy rate. Most interventions were safe. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the most comprehensive network meta-analysis to date of interventions for preventing postoperative intrauterine adhesion recurrence. Our results indicate that PRP + Balloon seems to be the most effective approach.

Language is an advanced cognitive function of humans, and verbs play a crucial role in language. To understand how the human brain represents verbs, it is critical to analyze what knowledge humans have about verbs. Thus, several verb feature datasets have been developed in different languages such as English, Spanish, and German. However, there is still a lack of a dataset of Chinese verbs. In this study, we developed a semantic feature dataset of 1140 Chinese Mandarin verbs (CVFD) with 11 dimensions including verb familiarity, agentive subject, patient, action effector, perceptual modality, instrumentality, emotional valence, action imageability, action complexity, action intensity, and the usage scenario of action. We calculated the semantic features of each verb and the correlation between dimensions. We also compared the difference between action, mental, and other verbs and gave some examples about how to use CVFD to classify verbs according to different dimensions. Finally, we discussed the potential applications of CVFD in the fields of neuroscience, psycholinguistics, cultural differences, and artificial intelligence. INTRODUCTION: Chronic kidney disease, which is defined by a reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate and albuminuria, imposes a large health burden worldwide. Ethnicity-specific associations are frequently observed in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). This study conducts a GWAS of albuminuria in the nondiabetic population of Taiwan. METHODS: Nondiabetic individuals aged 30-70 years without a history of cancer were enrolled from the Taiwan Biobank. A total of 6,768 subjects were subjected to a spot urine examination. After quality control using PLINK and imputation using SHAPEIT and IMPUTE2, a total of 3,638,350 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) remained for testing. SNPs with a minor allele frequency of less than 0.1% were excluded. Linear regression was used to determine the relationship between SNPs and log urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio. RESULTS: Six suggestive loci are identified in or near the FCRL3 (p = 2.56 × 10-6), TMEM161 (p = 4.43 × 10-6), EFCAB1 (p = 2.03 × 10-6), ELMOD1 (p = 2.97 × 10-6), RYR3 (p = 1.34 × 10-6), and PIEZO2 (p = 2.19 × 10-7). Genetic variants in the FCRL3 gene that encode a secretory IgA receptor are found to be associated with IgA nephropathy, which can manifest as proteinuria. The PIEZO2 gene encodes a sensor for mechanical forces in mesangial cells and renin-producing cells. Five SNPs with a p-value between 5 × 10-6 and 5 × 10-5 are also identified in five genes that may have a biological role in the development of albuminuria. CONCLUSION: Five new loci and one known suggestive locus for albuminuria are identified in the nondiabetic Taiwanese population.

BACKGROUND: Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have linked RRBP1 (ribosomal-binding protein 1) genetic variants to atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases and serum lipoprotein levels. However, how RRBP1 regulates blood pressure is unknown. METHODS: To identify genetic variants associated with blood pressure, we performed a genome-wide linkage analysis with regional fine mapping in the Stanford Asia-Pacific Program for Hypertension and Insulin Resistance (SAPPHIRe) cohort. We further investigated the role of the RRBP1 gene using a transgenic mouse model and a human cell model. RESULTS: In the SAPPHIRe cohort, we discovered that genetic variants of the RRBP1 gene were associated with blood pressure variation, which was confirmed by other GWASs for blood pressure. Rrbp1- knockout (KO) mice had lower blood pressure and were more likely to die suddenly from severe hyperkalemia caused by phenotypically hyporeninemic hypoaldosteronism than wild-type controls. The survival of Rrbp1-KO mice significantly decreased under high potassium intake due to lethal hyperkalemia-induced arrhythmia and persistent hypoaldosteronism, which could be rescued by fludrocortisone. An immunohistochemical study revealed renin accumulation in the juxtaglomerular cells of Rrbp1-KO mice. In the RRBP1-knockdown Calu-6 cells, a human renin-producing cell line, transmission electron and confocal microscopy revealed that renin was primarily retained in the endoplasmic reticulum and was unable to efficiently target the Golgi apparatus for secretion. CONCLUSIONS: RRBP1 deficiency in mice caused hyporeninemic hypoaldosteronism, resulting in lower blood pressure, severe hyperkalemia, and sudden cardiac death. In juxtaglomerular cells, deficiency of RRBP1 reduced renin intracellular trafficking from ER to Golgi apparatus. RRBP1 is a brand-new regulator of blood pressure and potassium homeostasis discovered in this study.

Lignocellulosic biomass is considered the most abundant and renewable feedstock for biobased butyric acid production. However, the furan derivatives (FAs, mainly furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural) generated from the pretreatment of lignocellulose severely inhibit the growth of Clostridium tyrobutyricum, which is the best strain for producing butyric acid. The tolerance mechanism of C. tyrobutyricum to FAs has not been investigated thus far. Here, the response of C. tyrobutyricum ATCC 25755 to FA challenge was first evaluated by using comprehensive transcriptional analysis. The results indicated that the genes related to membrane transport, heat shock proteins, and transcriptional regulation were upregulated under FA stress. However, the expression of almost all genes encoding reductases was not changed, and only the ad gene CTK_RS02625 and the bud gene CTK_RS07810 showed a significant increase of ~ 1.05-fold. Then, the enzyme activity assays indicated that BUD could catalyze the reduction of FAs with relatively low activity and that AD could not participate in the conversion of FAs, indicating that the inability to rapidly convert FAs to their low-toxicity alcohols may be the main reason for the low FA tolerance of C. tyrobutyricum. This research provides insights into the development of FA-tolerant strains, thereby enhancing the bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass to butyric acid. KEY POINTS: • The response of C. tyrobutyricum to FAs was evaluated for the first time. • Genes encoding membrane transporters and heat shock proteins were triggered by FAs. • A lack of effective FA reductases leads to low FA tolerance in C. tyrobutyricum.

Context: With the rapidly aging population globally, osteoporosis (OP) has become a major public health problem, and fracture is a common complication of OP. Older adults, especially postmenopausal women, have a higher incidence of OP. Objective: The study intended to analyze the clinical information, epidemiological characteristics, treatments, and follow-up results of patients with osteoporotic fractures (OPFs) in adults over 65 years old, to provide data support for the prevention, treatment, and use of OPF focus groups in clinical practice. Design: The research team performed a retrospective analysis using electronic medical records and related imaging data of patients. Setting: The study took place at Hebei General Hospital in Hebei, China. Participants: Participants were 387 patients over 65 years old with osteoporotic fractures who had been admitted to the hospital between July 2012 and July 2018. Outcome Measures: The research team recorded participants' ages, genders, fracture causes, and fracture sites. The team performed a follow-up analysis on refractures, treatment with anti-osteoporotic drugs, exercise, and survival status within the 3 years after surgery. Results: The study's male-to-female ratio was 1:3.1, and the rate of osteoporotic fracture for females was significantly higher than that of males. The mean age of participants with fractures was 75.6 ± 8.5 years, and most fractures occurred in participants 78 to 85 years old. Of the 387 participants, 169 participants had hip fractures (43.67%); 98 had vertebral compression fractures (25.32%); 51 had distal radius and ulna fractures (13.18%); 42 had proximal humerus fractures (10.85%); and 27 had other fractures (6.98%). The number of women with fractures at each site was greater than the number of men, but the differences weren't statistically significant (P > .05). The main causes of injury were falls (71.58%), and the main place of the occurrence of injury was at home (65.6%). Of the 387 participants, 346 had surgical treatment (89.41%), and the effective rate of surgical treatment was 99.42%. Three years after surgery, the research team followed up with 235 participants, for a follow-up rate of 60.72%. Within the 3 years of the follow-up period, 61 participants had refractures (25.63%), 29 received treatment with regular anti-osteoporotic drugs (12.34%), 36 exercised twice or more a week (15.32%), and 32 had died for various reasons (13.62%). Conclusions: The study preliminarily described the epidemiological characteristics of 387 osteoporotic fractures in adults over 65 years old. More women had fractures than men; the hip was the most common fracture site, and falls were the main cause of injury. Most of the fractures occurred in the place of residence, and the refracture rate was 25.96% at three years after surgery.

Copper-containing amine oxidases (CuAOs) are known to have significant involvement in the process of polyamine catabolism, as well as serving crucial functions in plant development and response to abiotic stress. A genome-wide investigation of the CuAO protein family was previously carried out in sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) and sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.). Six CuAO (KoCuAO1-KoCuAO6) genes were discovered for the first time in the Kandelia obovata (Ko) genome through a genome-wide analysis conducted to better understand the key roles of the CuAO gene family in Kandelia obovata. This study encompassed an investigation into various aspects of gene analysis, including gene characterization and identification, subcellular localization, chromosomal distributions, phylogenetic tree analysis, gene structure analysis, motif analysis, duplication analysis, cis-regulatory element identification, domain and 3D structural variation analysis, as well as expression profiling in leaves under five different treatments of copper (CuCl2). Phylogenetic analysis suggests that these KoCuAOs, like sweet cherry, may be subdivided into three subgroups. Examining the chromosomal location revealed an unequal distribution of the KoCuAO genes across four out of the 18 chromosomes in Kandelia obovata. Six KoCuAO genes have coding regions with 106 and 159 amino acids and exons with 4 and 12 amino acids. Additionally, we discovered that the 2.5 kb upstream promoter region of the KoCuAOs predicted many cis elements linked to phytohormones and stress responses. According to the expression investigations, CuCl2 treatments caused up- and downregulation of all six genes. In conclusion, our work provides a comprehensive overview of the expression pattern and functional variety of the Kandelia obovata CuAO gene family, which will facilitate future functional characterization of each KoCuAO gene.

Circular RNAs play essential roles in the development of various human diseases. However, how circRNAs are involved in diabetic nephropathy (DN) are not fully understood. Our study aimed to investigate the effects of circRNA circEIF4G2 on DN. Experiments were performed in the db/db mouse model of type 2 diabetes and NRK-52E cells. We found that circEIF4G2 was significantly up-regulated in the kidneys of db/db mice and NRK-52E cells stimulated by high glucose. circEIF4G2 knockdown inhibited the expressions of TGF-ß1, Collagen I and Fibronectin in high glucose-stimulated NRK-52E cells, which could be rescued by miR-218 inhibitor. Knockdown of SERBP1 reduced the expression of TGF-ß1, Collagen I and Fibronectin in HG-stimulated NRK-52E cells. In summary, our findings suggested that circEIF4G2 promotes renal tubular epithelial cell fibrosis via the miR-218/SERBP1 pathway, presenting a novel insight for DN treatment.

Long-standing inflammatory bowel disease predisposes to the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). Interleukin (IL) -6, a pivotal link between chronic inflammation and tumor progression, has recently been recognized as a potential therapeutic target. The effect of IL-6 on proliferation and metastasis of CRC by activating the STAT3 pathway has been widely demonstrated in recent years, but few on mediating tumor immune evasion. In this study, we found that IL-6 was remarkably overexpressed in CRC and its elevation was associated with a poor prognosis. We studied CRC tumorigenesis in vivo by inoculating MC38 tumors and induced-CRC model via AOM/DSS (azoxymethane/dextransulfate sodium) in IL-6 deficient (IL-6-/-) and wild-type (WT) mice and found that IL-6-/- mice were less susceptible to develop tumors, compared to WT mice. We detected CD8+ T cells via immunofluorescence and found they exhibit high expression in tumor of IL-6-/- mice. High level of IL-6 was found in colitis model, with down-regulation of MHC-I molecules. In in vitro experiments, we found that IL-6 may act as a negative regulator in IFNγ-STAT1-MHC-I signaling. In addition, vivo trials also confirmed that MHC-I mRNA level was negatively related to the existence of IL-6. Furthermore, the blockade of IL-6 also activated CD8+T-cell accumulation and led to the high PD-L1 expression in CRC, which can sensitize animals to anti-PD-1 therapy. Our study provides a research basis for the significant role of IL-6 in tumor evasion and highlights a novel target to improve the efficacy of immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of dynamic hip screw (DHS) and femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) in the treatment of lateral-wall high-risk type of intertrochanteric fractures. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 98 patients with high-risk intertrochanteric fractures of the lateral wall who underwent surgery from January 2019 to December 2020 were selected as the study subjects. Of these, 52 were treated surgically with PFNA (mean age 73.45±5.95 years) and 46 with DHS (71.37±6.22 years). We followed up these patients and compared the occurrence of the 2 surgical methods in terms of perioperative period, complication rate, and functional recovery. RESULTS In terms of lateral wall fracture, there were 2 cases of PFNA and 10 cases of DHS, and the difference between groups was statistically significant (P<0.05). Operative time (mean 54.94±7.29 vs 61.17±6.45) and intraoperative blood loss (72.80±9.18 vs 96.12±8.22) was significantly lower in the PFNA group compared to the DHS group (all P<0.05). Efficacy in the PFNA group was significantly better than in the DHS group. The HHS at follow-up was significantly higher in the PFNA group (mean 80.73±9.20 vs 64.19±8.12) than in the DHS group (P<0.001). The VAS score at follow-up was significantly lower in the PFNA group (1.78±0.34 vs 2.65±0.23) than in the DHS group (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS PFNA is more effective than DHS in the treatment of high-risk lateral wall fractures in the elderly, with the advantages of lower incidence of complications and better recovery of hip joint function. PFNA warrants clinical application.

Predicting brain invasion preoperatively should help to guide surgical decision-making and aid the prediction of meningioma grading and prognosis. However, only a few imaging features have been identified to aid prediction. This study aimed to develop and validate an MRI-based nomogram to predict brain invasion by meningioma. In this retrospective study, 658 patients were examined via routine MRI before undergoing surgery and were diagnosed with meningioma by histopathology. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regularization was used to determine the optimal combination of clinical characteristics and MRI features for predicting brain invasion by meningiomas. Logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were used to determine the discriminatory ability. Furthermore, a nomogram was constructed using the optimal MRI features, and decision curve analysis was used to validate the clinical usefulness of the nomogram. Eighty-one patients with brain invasion and 577 patients without invasion were enrolled. According to LASSO regularization, tumour shape, tumour boundary, peritumoral oedema, and maximum diameter were independent predictors of brain invasion. The model showed good discriminatory ability for predicting brain invasion in meningiomas, with an AUC of 0.905 (95% CI, 0.871-0.940) vs 0.898 (95% CI, 0.849-0.947) and sensitivity of 93.0% vs 92.6% in the training vs validation cohorts. Our predictive model based on MRI features showed good performance and high sensitivity for predicting the risk of brain invasion in meningiomas and can be applied in the clinical setting.

BACKGROUND: Abnormally expressed in diverse cancers, circZFR has been correlated with clinical outcomes of cancer patients. Aim of this meta-analysis was to elucidate the prognostic role of circZFR in multiple human malignancies. METHODS: Literature retrieval was conducted by systematically searching on Pubmed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library up to December 2nd, 2021. Hazard ratios (HRs) or odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled to evaluate the association between circZFR expression and overall survival (OS). The reliability of the pooled results was assessed through sensitivity analysis and the publication bias was measured by Begg's and Egger's test. RESULTS: A total of seventeen studies comprising 1098 Chinese patients were enrolled in this meta-analysis. Results demonstrated that high circZFR expression was correlated with an unfavorable OS (HR = 2.14, 95% CI 1.74, 2.64). High circZFR expression predicted larger tumor size (OR = 2.79, 95% CI 1.52, 5.12), advanced clinical stage (OR = 3.38, 95% CI 1.49, 7.65), tendentiousness of lymph node metastasis (LNM) (OR = 3.08, 95% CI 2.01, 4.71), and malignant grade (OR = 3.18, 95% CI 1.09, 9.30), but not related to age, gender, and distant metastasis (DM). CONCLUSIONS: High circZFR expression was associated with unfavorable OS and clinicopathologic parameters including tumor size, clinical stage, LNM, and histology grade, implicating a promising prognostic factor in cancers.

Protein micro/nanopatterning has long provided sophisticated strategies for a wide range of applications including biointerfaces, tissue engineering, optics/photonics, and bioelectronics. We present here the use of regenerated silk fibroin to explore wrinkle formation by exploiting the structure-function relation of silk. This yields a biopolymer-based reversible, multiresponsive, dynamic wrinkling system based on the protein's responsiveness to external stimuli that allows on-demand tuning of surface morphologies and properties. The polymorphic transitions of silk fibroin enable modulation of the wrinkle patterns and, consequently, the material's physical properties. The interplay between silk protein chains and external stimuli enables control over the protein film's wrinkling dynamics. Thanks to the versatility of regenerated silk fibroin as a technological substrate, a number of demonstrator devices of varying utility are shown ranging from information encoding to modulation of optical transparency and thermal regulation.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important crops in China. Since 2020, a new leaf spot disease has occurred in southwest China in areas such as Yunnan, Sichuan and Hubei provinces. Typical symptoms appeared after tasseling. The spots are scattered on the leaf surface, round to oval in shape with diameter range 3-20 mm. Spots are initially water-soaked, gradually turning yellow or white. In 2021, diseased leaf samples with typical white spot were collected for pathogen isolation and identification in Qujing, Yunnan province. Four small pieces of leaf tissue (about 0.25 cm2 in area) were excised from the edge of the necrotic lesion of each plant, surface sterilized with 75% ethanol for 1 min, rinsed three times with sterile distilled water, and soaked in sterile distilled water for 5 min. The solution was plated on Luria Broth medium (LB) plate (Shin et al. 2022) . After incubation at 28°C for 24 h, round, smooth-edged yellow colonies appeared in the LB plate. The bacterium isolated was gram-negative, negative for oxidase, positive for peroxidase, indole, citrate (Wells et al. 1987). Three strains (PA21QJ01, PA21QJ02 and PA21QJ03) showed identical colony morphology. PA21QJ01 was used for further molecular analyses. DNA was extracted from fresh colonies cultured in LB(Shin et al. 2022), and the fragments at the 16S rDNA, gyrB and rpoB loci were amplified using primers 27F/1492R (Galkiewicz and Kellogg 2008), UP-1/UP-2r (Yamamoto and Harayama 1995) and rpoBCM81-F/rpoBCM32b-R (Brady et al. 2008), respectively. The sequences of fragments of 16S rDNA, gyrB and rpoB from isolate PA21QJ01 were was deposited in GenBank (accession number: OM184301.1, OM302500, OM302499). A search for homologous sequences using BLAST resulted in 99.9, 99.6 and 99.8% identity of 16S rDNA, gyrB and rpoB, respectively, with sequences from the NN08200 of Pantoea ananatis (GenBank accession numbers: MK415050.1 for 16S rDNA, CP035034.1 for gyrB and CP035034.1.1 for rpoB). Above molecular results indicated that PA21QJ01 isolated from maize white spot is P. ananatis. Pathogenicity tests were performed on tasseled plants of the suscptible maize variety Wugu1790. After culture in LB medium plate at 30°C for 12 h, the bacterial solution was used for inoculation at a concentration of 1 × 108 CFU ml-1. After 7 days of inoculation, the leaves of the plants appeared water-soaked. After 10 days, white spot developed with brown margin. In contrast, the control plants remained healthy and symptomless. The same P. ananatis was reisolated in the inoculated maize plants, fulfilled Koch's law. In the last decade, P. ananatis has been reported to cause maize white spot in South Africa, Mexico, Poland, Argentina, Brazil (Sauer et al. 2015), and Ecuador (Toaza et al.2021). It has caused crop diseases with other crops, such as onion, rice, pineapple, melon, and sorghum, and others (Sauer et al. 2015). It caused leaf blight and leaf steak in rice in China (Yu et al. 2021). This is the first report of maize white spot caused by P. ananatis in China. However, to our knowledge, this is the first report of maize white spot disease in China.
