RESUMO

MYB family transcription factors (TFs) play essential roles in various biological processes, yet their involvement in regulating fruit ripening and fruit size in citrus remains poorly understood. In this study, we have established that the R2R3-MYB TF, CsMYB77, exerts a negative regulatory influence on fruit ripening in both citrus and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), while also playing a role in modulating fruit size in citrus. The overexpression of CsMYB77 in tomato and Hongkong kumquat (Fortunella hindsii) led to notably delayed fruit ripening phenotypes. Moreover, the fruit size of Hongkong kumquat transgenic lines was largely reduced. Based on DNA affinity purification sequencing and verified interaction assays, SEVEN IN ABSENTIA OF ARABIDOPSIS THALIANA4 (SINAT4) and PIN-FORMED PROTEIN5 (PIN5) were identified as downstream target genes of CsMYB77. CsMYB77 inhibited the expression of SINAT4 to modulate abscisic acid (ABA) signaling, which delayed fruit ripening in transgenic tomato and Hongkong kumquat lines. The expression of PIN5 was activated by CsMYB77, which promoted free indole-3-acetic acid decline and modulated auxin signaling in the fruits of transgenic Hongkong kumquat lines. Taken together, our findings revealed a fruit development and ripening regulation module (MYB77-SINAT4/PIN5-ABA/auxin) in citrus, which enriches the understanding of the molecular regulatory network underlying fruit ripening and size.

Accurate orientations and stable conformations of membrane receptor immobilization are particularly imperative for accurate drug screening and ligand-protein affinity analysis. However, there remain challenges associated with (1) traditional recombination, purification, and immobilization of membrane receptors, which are time-consuming and labor-intensive; (2) the orientations on the stationary phase are not easily controlled. Herein, a novel one-step synthesis and oriented-immobilization membrane-receptor affinity chromatography (oSOMAC) method was developed to realize high-throughput and accurate drug screening targeting specific domains of membrane receptors. We employed Strep-tag II as a noncovalent immobilization tag fused into platelet-derived growth factor receptor ß (PDGFRß) through CFPS, and meanwhile, the Strep-Tactin-modified monolithic columns are prepared in batches. The advantages of oSOMAC are as follows: (1) targeted membrane receptors can be expressed independent of living cell within 1-2 h; (2) orientation of membrane receptors can be flexibly controlled and active sites can expose accurately; and (3) targeted membrane receptors can be synthesized, purified, and orientation-immobilized on monolithic columns in one step. Accordingly, three potential PDGFRß intracellular domain targeted ligands: tanshinone IIA (Tan IIA), hydroxytanshinone IIA, and dehydrotanshinone IIA were successfully screened out from Salvia miltiorrhiza extract through oSOMAC. Pharmacological experiments and molecular docking further demonstrated that Tan IIA could attenuate hepatic stellate cells activation by targeting the protein kinase domain of PDGFRß with a KD value of 9.7 µM. Ultimately, the novel oSOMAC method provides an original insight for accurate drug screening and interaction analysis which can be applied in other membrane receptors.

Lead-free double perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have received widespread attention because of their non-toxic nature and three-dimensional structure. However, their photovoltaic efficiency is limited by their large bandgap, including indirect or direct forbidden. Herein, Cu+ ions are incorporated into Cs2AgInCl6 double perovskite quantum dots, following which the bandgap is effectively decreased from 3.6 to 2.9 eV. Meanwhile, a facile method of drop-coating is employed to fabricate Cs2AgInCl6 films and carbon electrodes. A carbon electrode derived from a by-product of the cane sugar industry (molasses) is used to replace the expensive hole-transport materials and metal electrodes. A 0.5% Cu+-doped Cs2AgInCl6, device fabricated using carbon-based PSCs with a stacked-architecture achieves a power conversion efficiency of 1.77%, which is 2.9 times higher than that of the original device, and displays a better stability compared with that of the control one. This study provides guidance for preparing PSCs using a low-cost, facile strategy.

BACKGROUND: Infertility affects many couples globally, causing physical, emotional, and financial burdens. While observational studies suggest a link between psychiatric disorders and female infertility, causal relationships remain uncertain. Mendelian randomization analysis, using genome-wide association studies data, minimizes confounding factors and reverse causation, providing valuable insights into causal associations. METHODS: We conducted Mendelian randomization analysis to explore the potential causal relationship between female infertility and psychiatric disorders. Genome-wide association studies summary data for female infertility (112,105 individuals of European ancestry, comprising 11,442 cases and 100,663 controls), depression (807,553 individuals of European ancestry, comprising 246,363 cases and 561,190 controls), anxiety (21,763 individuals of European ancestry, comprising 7,016 cases and 14,745 controls), bipolar disorder (51,710 individuals of European ancestry, comprising 20,352 cases and 31,358 controls), and eating disorders (72,517 individuals of European ancestry, comprising 16,992 cases and 55,525 controls) were utilized. Instrumental variables were selected based on significant single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with each phenotype. We assessed instrumental variable strength, examined confounding factors, and employed inverse variance weighting, weighted median, and MR-Egger approaches for analysis. RESULTS: Our analysis included 85 single nucleotide polymorphisms for female infertility and 62 single nucleotide polymorphisms for psychiatric disorders. Results suggest a potential causal relationship between depression and female infertility, with both inverse variance weighting and weighted median methods showing increased infertility risk in depressed patients. Evidence is weak regarding bipolar disorder not increasing female infertility risk. We found no evidence supporting causal links between anxiety, eating disorders, and female infertility. Similarly, no causal relationship was found between female infertility and psychiatric disorders in the opposite direction. Sensitivity analyses and tests for heterogeneity and polymorphism supported result robustness. CONCLUSIONS: This analysis provides evidence for a potential causal relationship between depression and female infertility. Addressing depression in infertile women may improve fertility outcomes. Further research is needed to explore underlying mechanisms and potential interventions for improving fertility outcomes in women with psychiatric disorders.

Inflammation is a complex host defensive response against various disease-associated pathogens. A baseline extent of inflammation is supposed to be tightly associated with a sequence of immune-modulated processes, resulting in the protection of the host organism against pathogen invasion; however, as a matter of fact is that an uncontrolled inflammatory cascade is the main factor responsible for the host damage, accordingly suggesting a significant and indispensable involvement of negative feedback mechanism in modulation of inflammation. Evidence accumulated so far has supported a repressive effect of the canonical Wnt/ß-catenin pathway on microbial-triggered inflammation via diverse mechanisms, although that consequence is dependent on the cellular context, types of stimuli, and cytokine environment. It is of particular interest and importance to comprehend the precise way in which the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway is activated, due to its essential anti-inflammatory properties. It is assumed that an inflammatory milieu is necessary for initiating and activating this signaling, implying that Wnt activity is responsible for shielding tissues from overwhelming inflammation, thus sustaining a balanced physiological condition against bacterial infection. This review gathers the recent efforts to elucidate the mechanistic details through how Wnt/ß-catenin signaling modulates anti-inflammatory responses in response to bacterial infection and its interactions with other inflammatory signals, which warrants further study for the development of specific interventions for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Further clinical trials from different disease settings are required.

To investigate the potential antifungal mechanisms of rhizosphere Actinobacteria against Ceratocystis fimbriata in sweet potato, a comprehensive approach combining biochemical analyses and multi-omics techniques was employed in this study. A total of 163 bacterial strains were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of sweet potato. Among them, strain MEPS155, identified as Streptomyces djakartensis, exhibited robust and consistent inhibition of C. fimbriata mycelial growth in in vitro dual culture assays, attributed to both cell-free supernatant and volatile organic compounds. Moreover, strain MEPS155 demonstrated diverse plant growth-promoting attributes, including the production of indole-3-acetic acid, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase, phosphorus solubilization, nitrogen fixation, and enzymatic activities such as cellulase, chitinase, and protease. Notably, strain MEPS155 exhibited efficacy against various sweet potato pathogenic fungi. Following the inoculation of strain MEPS155, a significant reduction (P < 0.05) in malondialdehyde content was observed in sweet potato slices, indicating a potential protective effect. The whole genome of MEPS155 was characterized by a size of 8,030,375 bp, encompassing 7234 coding DNA sequences and 32 secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters. Transcriptomic analysis revealed 1869 differentially expressed genes in the treated group that cultured with C. fimbriata, notably influencing pathways associated with porphyrin metabolism, fatty acid biosynthesis, and biosynthesis of type II polyketide products. These alterations in gene expression are hypothesized to be linked to the production of secondary metabolites contributing to the inhibition of C. fimbriata. Metabolomic analysis identified 1469 potential differently accumulated metabolites (PDAMs) when comparing MEPS155 and the control group. The up-regulated PDAMs were predominantly associated with the biosynthesis of various secondary metabolites, including vanillin, myristic acid, and protocatechuic acid, suggesting potential inhibitory effects on plant pathogenic fungi. Our study underscores the ability of strain S. djakartensis MEPS155 to inhibit C. fimbriata growth through the production of secretory enzymes or secondary metabolites. The findings contribute to a theoretical foundation for future investigations into the role of MEPS155 in postharvest black rot prevention in sweet potato.

Inhaling polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG) aerosol, a broad-spectrum disinfectant, can lead to severe pulmonary fibrosis. Ferroptosis, a form of programmed cell death triggered by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation, is believed to play a role in the chemical-induced pulmonary injury. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of ferroptosis in the progression of PHMG-induced pulmonary fibrosis. C57BL/6 J mice and the alveolar type II cell line MLE-12 were used to evaluate the toxicity of PHMG in vivo and in vitro, respectively. The findings indicated that iron deposition was observed in PHMG induced pulmonary fibrosis mouse model and ferroptosis related genes have changed after 8 weeks PHMG exposure. Additionally, there were disturbances in the antioxidant system and mitochondrial damage in MLE-12 cells following a 12-hour treatment with PHMG. Furthermore, the study observed an increase in lipid peroxidation and a decrease in GPX4 activity in MLE-12 cells after exposure to PHMG. Moreover, pretreatment with the ferroptosis inhibitors Ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) and Liproxstatin-1 (Lip-1) not only restored the antioxidant system and GPX4 activity but also mitigated lipid peroxidation. Current data exhibit the role of ferroptosis pathway in PHMG-induced pulmonary fibrosis and provide a potential target for future treatment.

BACKGROUND: PM2.5 and its chemical components increase health risks and are associated with depression and gut microbiota. However, there is still limited evidence on whether gut microbiota and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) mediate the association between PM2.5, PM2.5 chemical components, and antenatal depression. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating role of maternal gut microbiota in correlations between short-term exposure to PM2.5, short-term exposure to PM2.5 chemical components, and antenatal depression. METHODS: Demographic information and stool samples were collected from 75 pregnant women in their third trimester. Their exposure to PM2.5 and PM2.5 chemical components was measured. Participants were divided into the non-antenatal depression group or the antenatal depression group according to the cut-off of 10 points on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). The gut microbiota were analyzed using the 16 S rRNA-V3/V4 gene sequence, and the concentration of PM2.5 and its chemical components was calculated using the Tracking Air Pollution in China (TAP) database. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to analyze SCFAs in stool samples. In order to assess the mediating effects of gut microbiota and SCFAs, mediation models were utilized. RESULTS: There were significant differences between gut microbial composition and SCFAs concentrations between the non-antenatal depression group and the antenatal depression group. PM2.5 and its chemical components were positively associated with EPDS scores and negatively associated with genera Enterococcus and Enterobacter. Genera Candidatus_Soleaferrea (ß = -7.21, 95%CI -11.00 to -3.43, q = 0.01) and Enterococcus (ß = -2.37, 95%CI -3.87 to -0.87, q = 0.02) were negatively associated with EPDS scores, indicating their potential protective effects against antenatal depression. There was no significant association between SCFAs and EPDS scores. The mediating role of Enterococcus between different lagged periods of PM2.5, PM2.5 chemical component exposure, and antenatal depression was revealed. For instance, Enterococcus explained 29.23% (95%CI 2.16-87.13%, p = 0.04) of associations between PM2.5 exposure level at the day of sampling (lag 0) and EPDS scores. CONCLUSION: Our study highlights that Enterococcus may mediate the associations between PM2.5, PM2.5 chemical components, and antenatal depression. The mediating mechanism through which the gut microbiota influences PM2.5-induced depression in pregnant women still needs to be further studied.

The gut microbiome has been reported to be associated with nighttime light (NTL) exposure and temperament. However, the specific role of infant gut microbiome plays in NTL exposure and temperament is unclear. This study investigated the potential mediating role of infants' gut microbiome in correlations between NTL exposure and temperament. Demographic information, stool samples, and temperament scores were collected from 40 infants. Temperament was evaluated using the Infants Behavior Questionnaire-Revised (IBQ-R). The gut microbiota was analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing. Cumulative and lagged effects of NTL exposure were calculated based on residential address (NTLpoint) and a concentric 1 km radius buffer zone around the address (NTL1000m), respectively. Mediation models were utilized for assessing the mediating effects of the gut microbiome. The gut microbiome of infants with higher fear scores was characterized by a higher abundance of Akkermansia and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 and a lower abundance of Bacteroides. Mediation models indicated Akkermansia played a full mediating role in associations between NTLpoint, NTL1000m and fear in specific time periods. Genus Akkermansia explained 24.46% and 33.50% of associations between fear and cumulative exposure to NTLpoint and NTL1000m, respectively. This study provides evidence for the mediating role of Akkermansia between NTL exposure and fear. However, further experimental is required to elucidate the mechanisms through which the gut microbiome mediates between NTL exposure and temperament in infants.

BACKGROUND: Lifelong hypertension highlights the importance of dyadic engagement in coping with the disease. Although dyadic coping is heterogeneous in patients with other diseases, little is known about it in elderly patients with hypertension. In addition, whether impaired dyadic coping is associated with frailty has yet to be elucidated. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the latent profiles and characteristics of dyadic coping and the potential association between impaired dyadic coping and frailty in elderly patients with hypertension. METHODS: We recruited a total of 741 elderly patients with hypertension. Latent profile analysis was then used to identify the best-fitting model. Then, we used regression analysis to determine profile predictors and identify the association between impaired dyadic coping and frailty. RESULTS: The 5-profile model was considered to be the best-fitting model, as follows: profile 1, severely impaired dyadic coping; profile 2, mildly impaired dyadic coping; profile 3, normal dyadic coping; profile 4, better dyadic coping; and profile 5, the highest dyadic coping. In the fully adjusted model, the probability of frailty was 1.94-fold higher in the mildly impaired dyadic coping group (odds ratio, 1.94; 95% confidence interval, 1.09-3.47) and 2.66-fold higher in the severely impaired dyadic coping group (odds ratio, 2.66; 95% confidence interval, 1.11-6.39). CONCLUSIONS: We identified heterogeneity in dyadic coping and demonstrated that impaired dyadic coping was associated with frailty. Those at risk of dyadic coping impairment need to be identified early, followed by dyadic coping-based interventions to prevent or delay frailty.

We present the Empathy for Pain Stimuli System (EPSS): a large-scale database of stimuli for studying people's empathy for pain. The EPSS comprises five sub-databases. First, the Empathy for Limb Pain Picture Database (EPSS-Limb) provides 68 painful and 68 non-painful limb pictures, exhibiting people's limbs in painful and non-painful situations, respectively. Second, the Empathy for Face Pain Picture Database (EPSS-Face) provides 80 painful and 80 non-painful pictures of people's faces being penetrated by a syringe or touched by a Q-tip. Third, the Empathy for Voice Pain Database (EPSS-Voice) provides 30 painful and 30 non-painful voices exhibiting either short vocal cries of pain or neutral interjections. Fourth, the Empathy for Action Pain Video Database (EPSS-Action_Video) provides 239 painful and 239 non-painful videos of whole-body actions. Finally, the Empathy for Action Pain Picture Database (EPSS-Action_Picture) provides 239 painful and 239 non-painful pictures of whole-body actions. To validate the stimuli in the EPSS, participants evaluated the stimuli using four different scales, rating pain intensity, affective valence, arousal, and dominance. PURPOSE: Orbital [99mTc]TcDTPA orbital single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/CT is an important method for assessing inflammatory activity in patients with Graves' orbitopathy (GO). However, interpreting the results requires substantial physician workload. We aim to propose an automated method called GO-Net to detect inflammatory activity in patients with GO. MATERIALS AND METHODS: GO-Net had two stages: (1) a semantic V-Net segmentation network (SV-Net) that extracts extraocular muscles (EOMs) in orbital CT images and (2) a convolutional neural network (CNN) that uses SPECT/CT images and the segmentation results to classify inflammatory activity. A total of 956 eyes from 478 patients with GO (active: 475; inactive: 481) at Xiangya Hospital of Central South University were investigated. For the segmentation task, five-fold cross-validation with 194 eyes was used for training and internal validation. For the classification task, 80% of the eye data were used for training and internal fivefold cross-validation, and the remaining 20% of the eye data were used for testing. The EOM regions of interest (ROIs) were manually drawn by two readers and reviewed by an experienced physician as ground truth for segmentation GO activity was diagnosed according to clinical activity scores (CASs) and the SPECT/CT images. Furthermore, results are interpreted and visualized using gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM). RESULTS: The GO-Net model combining CT, SPECT, and EOM masks achieved a sensitivity of 84.63%, a specificity of 83.87%, and an area under the receiver operating curve (AUC) of 0.89 (p < 0.01) on the test set for distinguishing active and inactive GO. Compared with the CT-only model, the GO-Net model showed superior diagnostic performance. Moreover, Grad-CAM demonstrated that the GO-Net model placed focus on the GO-active regions. For EOM segmentation, our segmentation model achieved a mean intersection over union (IOU) of 0.82. CONCLUSION: The proposed Go-Net model accurately detected GO activity and has great potential in the diagnosis of GO.

For patients receiving organ transplants, monitoring the blood concentration of MPA can provide timely information on whether MPA has reached the effective therapeutic window to better function while reducing the incidence of rejection or adverse reactions. In this study, an electrochemical sensor for the detection of MPA was built using a nanocomposite made of CS-MWCNT and AuNPs. At the same time, the high performance liquid phase (HPLC) method for MPA was established and compared with this sensor. The surface morphology, structure, and roughness of the material on the electrode were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In addition, the electrochemical behavior of the modified electrode was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The standard curve was obtained in blank plasma, not pure buffer solution. The peak current was linearly related to the MPA concentration in the linear range of 0.001-0.1 mM with a detection limit of 0.05 µM and good anti-interference ability. Moreover, the sensor was employed with success for the determination of MPA in rat plasma with good recovery. The electrochemical sensor presented here is eco-friendly, and sensitive, and offers a great possibility for practical applicability.

An enantioselective construction of pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridones was achieved via N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed [3 + 3] annulation of enals with 5-aminopyrazoles. This protocol not only offers a highly efficient synthetic approach for the preparation of various substituted pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridones but also provides an effective method for the rapid synthesis of enantiopure spirooxindone derivatives.

RESUMO

An N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed atroposelective [3 + 3] annulation of enals with 2-aminomaleate derivatives is described. A series of substituted dihydropyridones bearing both C-N axis and point chirality were synthesized with good diastereo- and enantioselectivity under mild conditions. This efficient strategy successfully superpositions an extra point chiral element with an axial backbone, and the generated structurally interesting atropisomers may have potential application in drug discovery.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate sleep quality in patients with fibromyalgia (FM) and to analyse the effect of sleep on FM symptoms and quality of life. METHODS: Patients with FM and healthy subjects were recruited to assess their sleep quality, and patients were further assessed for pain, fatigue, depression, psychological stress and quality of life. The patients were divided into a sleep disorder group as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI score >7 points) and a group without sleep disorders (PSQI score ≤7 points). Linear regression analysis was used to explore the effect of sleep quality on FM pain controlling for sex and age, and the effect of sleep quality on FM fatigue, depression, psychological stress and quality of life controlling for sex, age and pain. RESULTS: A total of 450 patients and 50 healthy subjects participated in the study. The number of FM patients with sleep disorders was significantly higher than that of healthy subjects (90% vs. 14%, p≤0.001). In addition to the number of pain sites, the levels of pain, fatigue, depression, stress symptoms and quality of life were significantly impaired in FM patients with sleep disorders (p<0.05). In terms of the effects on quality of life assessed with the 36-item short-form health survey, the decrease in mental health was more substantial than the decrease in physical health (B=-12.10 vs. B=-5.40). CONCLUSIONS: Similar to FM patients in other countries and regions, a decrease in sleep quality is also the core symptom of FM patients in China and is significantly correlated with the severity of pain, fatigue, depression and stress symptoms and reduced quality of life, especially with regard to mental health, suggesting that the treatment of this disease should include sleep disorder interventions.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a noteworthy cause of liver diseases, especially cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinomas. However, the interaction between the host and HBV has not been fully elucidated. Peptide YY (PYY) is a 36-amino-acid gastrointestinal hormone that is mainly involved in the regulation of the human digestive system. This study found that PYY expression was reduced in HBV-expressing hepatocytes and HBV patients. Overexpression of PYY could significantly inhibit HBV RNA, DNA levels, and the secretion of HBsAg. In addition, PYY inhibits HBV RNA dependent on transcription through reducing the activities of CP/Enh I/II, SP1 and SP2. Meanwhile, PYY blocks HBV replication independent on core, polymerase protein and ε structure of pregenomic RNA. These results suggest that PYY can impair HBV replication by suppressing viral promoters/enhancers in hepatocytes. Our data shed light on a novel role for PYY as anti-HBV restriction factor.

PURPOSE: Patients with heart failure (HF) possess low self-care activation and motivation, leading to a deprived quality of life and adverse mental health conditions. To this end, self-determination theory emphasizes that autonomy-supportive interventions (ASI) can stimulate intrinsic motivation and improve behaviors and quality of life. Nevertheless, studies that focused on ASI for HF are inadequate. This study aims to evaluate the effects of an HF-ASIP on self-care, quality of life and mental health in HF patients. METHODS: In a two-arm randomized controlled trial, the participants are randomly allocated to the intervention (n = 41) or control (n = 41) groups. The intervention group received routine care and participated in an 8-week HF-ASIP, including individual education and consultation sessions. In contrast, the control group received only routine care. The primary outcome includes self-care management, while the secondary outcomes include self-care maintenance, quality of life, mental health, and motivation. After measuring the outcomes at baseline (T0), 4-week (T1), 8-week (T2), and 12-week (T3) follow-up, the intervention effects are assessed using the generalized equation models. RESULTS: The outcomes indicated that self-care management (T2: P = 0.001; T3: P = 0.016), self-care maintenance (T2: P = 0.003; T3: P = 0.001), depression (T2: P = 0.007; T3: P = 0.012), anxiety (T2: P = 0.001; T3: P = 0.012), MLHFQ total score (T1: P = 0.004; T2: P < 0.001; T3: P = 0.001), autonomous motivation (T2: P = .0.006; T3: P = 0.002) showed statistically difference between the groups. CONCLUSION: In summary, the 8-week HF-ASIP significantly improved the attributes of self-care, quality of life, mental health, and motivation in HF patients, suggesting the potential for practical intervention effect. Recently, there has been a lot of discussion about the nonlinearity property of contagion processes in epidemic spreading on social networks with various structures. In this paper, we propose a nonlinear contagion model in networked metapopulations to investigate the critical behavior of epidemics with recurrent mobility patterns. First, we build up a discrete-time Markovian chain model to formulate the spreading of susceptible-infected-susceptible-like diseases. Additionally, we develop a practicable framework to analyze the impact of mobility on the epidemic threshold and derive the theoretical condition for the transition of an epidemic from a local to a global scale. This transition is associated with multiple discontinuous phase changes. We validate our analytical results through extensive numerical simulations on both regular and heterogeneous networks. Our findings offer a useful tool to discuss the implementation of prevention strategies such as quarantine and lockdown.

BACKGROUND: Although a growing number of studies have demonstrated that patients' health literacy is associated with health outcomes, the exact relationship between them is not clear. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore latent classes of health literacy in patients with heart failure and analyze the differences among different groups. DESIGN AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional survey. Patients diagnosed with heart failure were selected from 3 tertiary hospitals in Tianjin, China, from March 2019 to November 2019. We measured patients' health literacy using the Health Literacy Scale for Chronic Patients. Latent class analysis was carried out based on the patients' Health Literacy Scale for Chronic Patients scores. Multinomial logistic regression was used to identify the predictive indicators of the latent classes. RESULTS: The health literacy of patients with heart failure was divided into 3 different latent classes, named "high health literacy group," "low literacy high dependence group," and "moderate literacy high willingness group." There were statistically significant differences in gender, age, smoking history, marital status, education level, household income level, and quality of life among different health literacy classes. Low education level and household income level predicted poor health literacy. CONCLUSION: There were 3 latent classes for the health literacy of patients with heart failure. Different health literacy classes exhibited their own distinctive characteristics. Patients in the "moderate literacy high willingness group" had the worst quality of life. Understanding the specific types of health literacy in patients with heart failure facilitates targeted nursing interventions to improve their quality of life.
