RESUMO

A well-defined pH-responsive star-shaped polymer containing poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMA) arms and a cage-like methacryloxypropyl silsesquioxane (CMSQ-T10) core was used as an interfacial stabilizer for emulsions consisting of m-xylene and water. We explored the properties of the CMSQ/PDMA star-shaped polymer using the characteristic results of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography (SEC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and zeta potential and conductivity measurements. The interfacial tension results showed that the CMSQ/PDMA star-shaped polymer reduced the interfacial tension between water and oil in a pH-dependent manner. Gelled high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) including o/w and w/o types were formed in the pH ranges of 1.2-5.8 and 9.1-12.3 with the CMSQ/PDMA star-shaped polymer as a stabilizer, when the oil fractions were 80-90 vol% and 10-20 vol%, respectively. The soluble star-shaped polymer aggregated spontaneously to form a microgel that adsorbed to the two immiscible phases. Images of the fluorescently labeled polymers demonstrated that there was a star-shaped polymer in the continuous phase, and the non-Pickering stabilization based on the percolating network of the star-shaped polymer also contributed to the stabilization of the HIPE. This pH-dependent HIPE was prepared with a novel stabilization mechanism consisting of microgel adsorption and non-Pickering stabilization. Moreover, the preparation of HIPEs provided the possibility of their application in porous materials and responsive materials.

We prepared core-shell polymer-silsesquioxane hybrid microcapsules from cage-like methacryloxypropyl silsesquioxanes (CMSQs) and styrene (St). The presence of CMSQ can moderately reduce the interfacial tension between St and water and help to emulsify the monomer prior to polymerization. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and TEM analysis demonstrated that uniform core-shell latex particles were achieved. The polymer latex particles were subsequently transformed into well-defined hollow nanospheres by removing the polystyrene (PS) core with 1:1 ethanol/cyclohexane. High-resolution TEM and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis showed that the final nanospheres possessed hollow cavities and had porous shells; the pore size was approximately 2-3 nm. The nanospheres exhibited large surface areas (up to 486 m2 g-1 ) and preferential adsorption, and they demonstrated the highest reported methylene blue adsorption capacity (95.1 mg g-1 ). Moreover, the uniform distribution of the methacryloyl moiety on the hollow nanospheres endowed them with more potential properties. These results could provide a new benchmark for preparing hollow microspheres by a facile one-step template-free method for various applications.

BACKGROUND: Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is a specific malformation of cortical development harboring intrinsic epileptogenicity, and most of the patients develop drug-resistant epilepsy in early childhood. The detrimental effects of early and frequent seizures on cognitive function in children are significant clinical issues. In this study, we evaluate the effects of early surgical intervention of FCD on epilepsy outcome and cognitive development. METHODS: From 2006 to 2013, 30 children younger than 18 years old underwent resective surgery for FCDs at Taipei Veterans General Hospital. The mean age at surgery was 10.0 years (range 1.7 to 17.6 years). There were 21 boys and 9 girls. In this retrospective clinical study, seizure outcome, cognitive function, and quality of life were evaluated. To evaluate the effects to outcomes on early interventions, the patients were categorized into four groups according to age of seizure onset, duration of seizure before surgery, and severity of cognitive deficits. RESULTS: Eleven of 22 (50 %) patients demonstrated developmental delay preoperatively. The Engel seizure outcome achievements were class I in 21 (70 %), class II in 2 (7 %), class III in 6 (20 %), and class IV in 1 (3 %) patients. The locations of FCDs resected were in the frontal lobe in 18 cases, temporal lobe in 7, parietal lobe in 2, and in bilobes including frontoparietal lobe in 2 and parieto-occipital lobes in 1. Eight cases that had FCDs involved in the rolandic cortex presented hemiparesis before surgical resection. Motor function in four of them improved after operation. The histopathological types of FCDs were type Ia in 1, type Ib in 7, type IIa in 7, type IIb in 12, and type III in 3 patients. FCDs were completely resected in 20 patients. Eighteen (90 %) of them were seizure free (p < 0.001) with three patients that received more than one surgery to accomplish complete resection. The patients who had early seizure onset, no significant cognitive function deficit, and early surgical intervention with complete resection in less than 2 years of seizure duration showed best outcomes on seizure control, cognitive function, and quality of life. CONCLUSION: Delay in cognitive development and poor quality of life is common in children treated for FCDs. Early surgical intervention and complete resection of the lesion help for a better seizure control, cognitive function development, and quality of life. FCDs involved eloquent cortex may not prohibit complete resection for better outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: To develop and evaluate a direct abdominal vein thrombus imaging (DATI) technique, based on a respiratory navigating SPACE sequence with DANTE black-blood preparation, for diagnosing abdominal vein thrombosis (AVT) without the use of exogenous contrast agents. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 10 healthy subjects and 28 suspected AVT patients who underwent DATI scans on 3.0 T MRI. Contrast-enhanced CT venography (CTV) was also conducted on the suspected AVT patients for comparison. All images were analyzed by two blinded radiologists who independently evaluated randomized images and gave image quality and diagnostic confidence scores (1-poor, 4-excellent) for DATI and CTV. The accuracy (ACC), sensitivity (SE), specificity (SP), positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of CTV were calculated using CTV as a standard reference. The diagnostic agreement between DATI and CTV as well as the interobserver agreement were conducted using Cohen κ test. RESULTS: The patient study demonstrated that DATI can provide adequate thrombus signal intensity and the contrast between the thrombus to dark venous lumen for the diagnosis of AVT. It offers good to excellent image quality (reader1/reader2: 3.50 ± 0.64/3.42 ± 0.63, κ = 0.872) and diagnostic confidence (reader1/reader2: 3.71 ± 0.53/3.78 ± 0.42, κ = 0.804) for the diagnosis of AVT. Taking CTV as a reference, DATI has high accuracy (96.6%), SE (91.5%), SP (98.0%), PPV (92.3%), and NPV (97.8%). DATA CONCLUSION: DATI can provide good to excellent image quality, effective venous blood signal suppression, and definitive thrombus detection for the diagnosis of AVT without the use of exogenous contrast agents.
