RESUMO

Sun-drying is a traditional process for preparing dried shrimp in coastal area of South China, but its impacts on nutrition and the formation of flavor-contributory substances in dried shrimp remain largely unknown. This study aimed to examine the effects of the production process on the microbiota and metabolites in dried shrimp. 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing was employed to identify 170 operational taxonomic units (OTUs), with Vibrio, Photobacterium, and Shewanella emerging as the primary pathogenic bacteria in shrimp samples. Lactococcus lactis was identified as the principal potential beneficial microorganism to accrue during the dried shrimp production process and found to contribute significantly to the development of desirable shrimp flavors. LC-MS-based analyses of dried shrimp sample metabolomes revealed a notable increase in compounds associated with unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis, arachidonic acid metabolism, amino acid biosynthesis, and flavonoid and flavanol biosynthesis throughout the drying process. Subsequent exploration of the relationship between metabolites and bacterial communities highlighted the predominant coexistence of Bifidobacterium, Clostridium, and Photobacterium contributing heterocyclic compounds and metabolites of organic acids and their derivatives. Conversely, Arthrobacter and Staphylococcus were found to inhibit each other, primarily in the presence of heterocyclic compounds. This comprehensive investigation provides valuable insights into the dynamic changes in the microbiota and metabolites of dried shrimps spanning different drying periods, which we expect to contribute to enhancing production techniques and safety measures for dried shrimp processing.

In this study, the "milky disease" model of Eriocheir sinhensis was constructed via intramuscular injection with the pathogenic yeast Metschnikowia bicuspidata. The dynamic pathological changes of E. sinensis after injection were elucidated with two staining methods (haemotoxylin-eosin and alcian blue periodic acid-Schiff) and fluorescence in situ hybridization technology. Anatomical observation revealed three stages of the "milky disease": no clinical signs (1-4 days after infection), the appearance of signs of disease (5-7 days), and significant liquefaction (10 days). Histological observation also revealed three stages of the disease: yeast diffusion (1-2 days after infection), yeast slow development (3-4 days), and yeast rapid proliferation (5 days). And FISH technique was suitable for the early detection of infection with M. bicuspidata in E. sinensis. We found that M. bicuspidata spread to the whole body of the crab through the haemolymph and developed into fungal septicaemia. These results elucidate the systemic pathological characteristics of "milky disease" in E. sinensis and suggest the pathogenic mechanism of M. bicuspidata.

BACKGROUND: Tremendous research efforts have been made in the Alzheimer's disease (AD) field to understand the disease etiology, progression and discover treatments for AD. Many mechanistic hypotheses, therapeutic targets and treatment strategies have been proposed in the last few decades. Reviewing previous work and staying current on this ever-growing body of AD publications is an essential yet difficult task for AD researchers. METHODS: In this study, we designed and implemented a natural language processing (NLP) pipeline to extract gene-specific neurodegenerative disease (ND) -focused information from the PubMed database. The collected publication information was filtered and cleaned to construct AD-related gene-specific publication profiles. Six categories of AD-related information are extracted from the processed publication data: publication trend by year, dementia type occurrence, brain region occurrence, mouse model information, keywords occurrence, and co-occurring genes. A user-friendly web portal is then developed using Django framework to provide gene query functions and data visualizations for the generalized and summarized publication information. RESULTS: By implementing the NLP pipeline, we extracted gene-specific ND-related publication information from the abstracts of the publications in the PubMed database. The results are summarized and visualized through an interactive web query portal. Multiple visualization windows display the ND publication trends, mouse models used, dementia types, involved brain regions, keywords to major AD-related biological processes, and co-occurring genes. Direct links to PubMed sites are provided for all recorded publications on the query result page of the web portal. CONCLUSION: The resulting portal is a valuable tool and data source for quick querying and displaying AD publications tailored to users' interested research areas and gene targets, which is especially convenient for users without informatic mining skills. Our study will not only keep AD field researchers updated with the progress of AD research, assist them in conducting preliminary examinations efficiently, but also offers additional support for hypothesis generation and validation which will contribute significantly to the communication, dissemination, and progress of AD research.

Restricted mouth opening (trismus) is one of the most common complications following head and neck cancer treatment. Early initiation of mouth-opening exercises is crucial for preventing or minimizing trismus. Current methods for these exercises predominantly involve finger exercises and traditional mouth-opening training devices. Our research group successfully designed an intelligent mouth-opening training device (IMOTD) that addresses the limitations of traditional home training methods, including the inability to quantify mouth-opening exercises, a lack of guided training resulting in temporomandibular joint injuries, and poor training continuity leading to poor training effect. For this device, an interactive remote guidance mode is introduced to address these concerns. The device was designed with a focus on the safety and effectiveness of medical devices. The accuracy of the training data was verified through piezoelectric sensor calibration. Through mechanical analysis, the stress points of the structure were identified, and finite element analysis of the connecting rod and the occlusal plate connection structure was conducted to ensure the safety of the device. The findings support the effectiveness of the intelligent device in rehabilitation through preclinical experiments when compared with conventional mouth-opening training methods. This intelligent device facilitates the quantification and visualization of mouth-opening training indicators, ensuring both the comfort and safety of the training process. Additionally, it enables remote supervision and guidance for patient training, thereby enhancing patient compliance and ultimately ensuring the effectiveness of mouth-opening exercises.

RESUMO

A digital workflow was used to design and prefabricate a 3-dimensionally printed, esthetic obturator prosthesis for immediate placement after a partial maxillectomy. The approach involved simultaneous reciprocation and support of the maxillary defect during the surgery and minimized the incidence of cicatricial contracture of the soft tissue, preventing permanent facial deformity and dysfunction.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety of yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) laser vitreolysis for intraocular tissues. METHODS: Thirty-six New Zealand rabbits were divided as follows: Group 1000 (n = 12) treated with YAG laser of 1000 mJ (5 mJ × 200 shots), Group 2000 (n = 12) treated with YAG laser of 2000 mJ (5 mJ × 400 shots), Group 3000 (n = 12) treated with YAG laser of 3000 mJ (5 mJ × 600 shots). Either a single eye was chosen as the study eye in study groups while the other was untreated as the control group. Intraocular pressure (IOP), slit-lamp, optical coherence tomography (OCT), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and inflammatory cytokines of aqueous humor (interleukin-1α (IL-1α), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)) were performed to examine the rabbits. RESULTS: There were no abnormalities in the study groups of IOP, slit-lamp, and OCT examinations. Group 3000 of TEM showed: neutrophils and mitochondrial swelling on day 1, and fibroblasts and neocollagen on day 14. No abnormalities were observed in Group 1000 and 2000 of TEM. Levels of IL-1α and TNF-α increased at 12 h and decreased to baseline on day 3. Levels of IL-1ß increased at 12 h and decreased to baseline on day 7. Levels of IL-8 increased on day 1 and decreased to baseline on day 3. CONCLUSION: YAG laser vitreolysis is safe when the distance is more than 2 mm from ablation point to the lens and the retina, and the total energy is less than 2000 mJ for one treatment procedure.

SUMMARY: Cancer Gene and Pathway Explorer (CGPE) is developed to guide biological and clinical researchers, especially those with limited informatics and programming skills, performing preliminary cancer-related biomedical research using transcriptional data and publications. CGPE enables three user-friendly online analytical and visualization modules without requiring any local deployment. The GenePub HotIndex applies natural language processing, statistics and association discovery to provide analytical results on gene-specific PubMed publications, including gene-specific research trends, cancer types correlations, top-related genes and the WordCloud of publication profiles. The OnlineGSEA enables Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) and results visualizations through an easy-to-follow interface for public or in-house transcriptional datasets, integrating the GSEA algorithm and preprocessed public TCGA and GEO datasets. The preprocessed datasets ensure gene sets analysis with appropriate pathway alternation and gene signatures. The CellLine Search presents evidence-based guidance for cell line selections with combined information on cell line dependency, gene expressions and pathway activity maps, which are valuable knowledge to have before conducting gene-related experiments. In a nutshell, the CGPE webserver provides a user-friendly, visual, intuitive and informative bioinformatics tool that allows biomedical researchers to perform efficient analyses and preliminary studies on in-house and publicly available bioinformatics data. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the main cause of blindness in elderly individuals. As a metabolic regulator, fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21) has been proven indicated to have an effect on wet AMD, but whether this cytokine has a therapeutic effect on dry AMD is unclear. The current study aimed to evaluate the preventive effects of FGF-21 against retinal degeneration in mice and provide mechanistic insights. FGF-21-/- mice were raised to 10 months of age. Then, the morphological changes in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)/choroid of the mice were observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and iTRAQ was used to detect the variations in the protein profile. Next, FGF-21-/- and wild-type mice of the same age were fed hydroquinone to generate a dry AMD mouse model to examine whether exogenous FGF-21 can interfere with the occurrence and development of dry AMD. In vivo studies revealed that following FGF-21 knockout, there was an increase in the expression of complement in the RPE/choroid concomitant with the occurrence of dry AMD-like pathological changes. Furthermore, exogenous FGF-21 administration effectively reversed this phenomenon. FGF-21 also demonstrated strong anti-inflammatory effects in the RPE/choroid by inhibiting the NF-κB pathway. In conclusion, the present study demonstrates that FGF-21 treatment presents a novel therapeutic approach for the prevention and development of dry AMD by reducing complement.

Heuristic and machine learning models for rank-ordering reaction templates comprise an important basis for computer-aided organic synthesis regarding both product prediction and retrosynthetic pathway planning. Their viability relies heavily on the quality and characteristics of the underlying template database. With the advent of automated reaction and template extraction software and consequently the creation of template databases too large for manual curation, a data-driven approach to assess and improve the quality of template sets is needed. We therefore systematically studied the influence of template generality, canonicalization, and exclusivity on the performance of different template ranking models. We find that duplicate and nonexclusive templates, i.e., templates which describe the same chemical transformation on identical or overlapping sets of molecules, decrease both the accuracy of the ranking algorithm and the applicability of the respective top-ranked templates significantly. To remedy the negative effects of nonexclusivity, we developed a general and computationally efficient framework to deduplicate and hierarchically correct templates. As a result, performance improved considerably for both heuristic and machine learning template ranking models, as well as multistep retrosynthetic planning models. The canonicalization and correction code is made freely available.

The Palaemonetes sinensis aquaculture industry in Panjin City, Liaoning Province, China, experienced heavy losses in October 2018. Morbidity of cultured shrimp reached 50% and was characterized by cloudiness of muscle and the gradual spread of disease within the population. When the infection was mild, histopathological examinations revealed that the muscle cells contained a considerable number of microorganisms. In extreme cases, the structure of the hepatopancreatic glandular and muscle fiber was obscured or even vanished. Electron microscope observations revealed the presence of granular cytoplasmic inclusions in cells from hepatopancreas and muscle tissues. The 16S rDNA sequence of the intracytoplasmic organism was 94.7% identity to that of Coxiella burnetii. This is the first report of infection by C. burnetii in P. sinensis.

A severe disease occurred in farmed Eriocheir sinensis characterized by milky liquid accumulation in the pectoral cavity, in the province of Liaoning, China, during October 2018-April 2019. Diseased crabs moved sluggishly, exhibited appetite loss and readily lost legs. Under the microscopic analysis, it was observed that the milky liquid contained a large number of yeastlike microorganisms (0.8-1.2 µm × 1.5-1.9 µm), which were also present in the muscle, hepatopancreas and gills. A dominant strain was isolated from the milky liquid and other tissues of diseased crabs. It grew on nutrient agar and formed 1- to 3-mm white opaque colonies, each with a protuberance in the centre. Besides, the results of TEM and SEM also demonstrate a typical multilateral budding model of the yeast clearly. We identified the strain, which we named 2EJM001, as Metschnikowia bicuspidata based on 18S rDNA, ITS and 26S rDNA sequence analyses and on its morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that 26S rDNA of 2EJM001 was clustered with M. bicuspidata (LNES0119) as reported by Bao et al. In addition, unlike Bao et al., two challenge experiments (injection and immersion) were used in this study. The results of challenge experiments show that 2EJM001 was pathogenic to E. sinensis and caused signs similar to those found in the naturally infected crabs. At the same time, the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC80 and MIC90 ) were determined. This study further confirms that M. bicuspidata 2EJM001 was the pathogen responsible for 'milky disease' in E. sinensis from Liaoning Province.

BACKGROUND: Verbascoside (VB), as an active component of multiple medicinal plants, has been proved to exert anti-oxidative, anti-aging and neuroprotective effects. This study was designed to investigate whether VB could play a cardioprotective role in septic heart injury. METHODS: Mice were injected with lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 10 mg/kg) to induce sepsis. The treatment group received an intraperitoneally injection of VB (20 mg/kg) before LPS challenge. Transthoracic echocardiography, ELISA, immunofluorescence, and qPCR were performed to assess the effect of VB on heart function, oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis. Transmission electronic microscopy and immunoblotting were used to evaluate the mitochondrial morphology and biogenesis of the septic heart. In vitro experiments were also performed to repeat above-mentioned assays. RESULTS: Compared with LPS group, the VB treatment group showed improved cardiac function in sepsis. VB alleviated oxidative stress and inflammatory cell infiltration, as well as cardiomyocyte apoptosis. Specifically, VB could restore sepsis-induced mitochondrial alterations via regulating mitochondrial biogenesis. These results were also confirmed in in vitro experiments. CONCLUSION: Verbascoside could protected from sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy by inhibiting oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis, as well as promoting mitochondrial biogenesis.

OBJECTIVES: Free fibula flap is the first choice for jaw reconstruction in head and neck oncology, but postoperative complications in donor site are ignored always. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term complications and potential risk factors of donor site after vascularized fibular transplantation, and to explore the precautions of preparing vascularized fibular flap and the measures of preventing donor site complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were retrospectively collected on 31 patients who had undergone immediate mandibular reconstruction with a fibular flap after segmental mandibulectomy from 2013 to 2018 in Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital. Thirty-one patients (24 male, 7 female) were available for the long-term complications in donor site analysis from 25 to 96 months after surgery. The data were collected and analyzed, including age at time of operation, early postoperative complications, incidence of dorsiflexion weakness of hallux, donor site missing fibula length, proximal and distal stump fibula length, and subjective evaluation of foot function (AOFAS-hallux, AOFAS-ankle hindfoot, Enneking lower limb function score). In the single-factor analysis in this study, the correlation between related factors and long-term complications was statistically analyzed. For inter-group comparisons of quantitative data, if the normal distribution was satisfied, two independent sample t-tests were used; p < 0.05 was statistical significant. If the normal distribution was not satisfied, Wilcoxon rank-sum test was used, and p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. For qualitative data, the Fisher exact probability method was compared between group differences, and p < 0.05 was statistically significant. RESULTS: The most commonly encountered complication in our series was dorsiflexion disorder, flexion deformity, numbness of the lateral side of the lower leg, and dorsum of the foot. Ten patients (32.26%) developed hallux flexion deformity after operation, 17 patients (54.84%) had hallux dorsiflexion dysfunction after operation, and 10 patients (32.26%) had numbness of the lateral side of the lower leg and dorsum of the foot. The incidence of hallux dorsiflexion dysfunction, thumb flexion deformity, and sensory disturbance was higher than that of other long-term complications in the donor area. The residual length of fibular distal was related to the dorsiflexion dysfunction and flexion deformity of hallux (p < 0.05). The early complications of donor site were correlated with the hallux dorsiflexion dysfunction (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of dorsiflexion disorder and flexion deformity is higher in patients after fibula transplantation. The less the residual length of fibular distal, the more obvious the long-term complications in the donor site, and the higher the incidence of dorsiflexion dysfunction and flexion deformity of hallux. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The long-term complications of donor site after fibular transplantation seriously affect the quality of life of patients and provide clinical reference for further reducing the occurrence of donor site complications.

Studies have shown that transcription factor activating enhancer binding protein 4 (TFAP4) plays a vital role in multiple types of cancer; however, the TFAP4 expression profile is still unknown, as is its value within the human pan-cancer analysis. The present study comprehensively analysed TFAP4 expression patterns from 33 types of malignancies, along with the significance of TFAP4 for prognosis prediction and cancer immunity. TFAP4 displayed inconsistent levels of gene expression across the diverse cancer cell lines, and displayed abnormal expression within most malignant tumours, which closely corresponded to overall survival. More importantly, the TFAP4 level was also significantly related to the degree of tumour infiltration. TFAP4 was correlated using gene markers in tumour-infiltrating immune cells and immune scores. TFAP4 expression was correlated with tumour mutation burden and microsatellite instability in different cancer types, and enrichment analyses identified TFAP4-associated terms and pathways. The present study comprehensively analysed the expression of TFAP4 across 33 distinct types of cancers, which revealed that TFAP4 may possibly play a vital role during cancer formation and development. TFAP4 is related to differing degrees of immune infiltration within cancers, which suggests the potential of TFAP4 as an immunotherapy target in cancers. Our study demonstrated that TFAP4 plays an important role in tumorigenesis as a prognostic biomarker, which highlights the possibility of developing new targeted treatments.

Atherosclerotic plaque instability contributes to ischaemic stroke and myocardial infarction. This study is to compare the abundance and difference of immune cell subtypes within unstable atherosclerotic tissues. CIBERSORT was used to speculate the proportions of 22 immune cell types based on a microarray of atherosclerotic carotid artery samples. R software was utilized to illustrate the bar plot, heat map and vioplot. The immune cell landscape in atherosclerosis was diverse, dominated by M2 macrophages, M0 macrophages, resting CD4 memory T cells and CD8 T cells. There was a significant difference in resting CD4 memory T cells (p = 0.032), T cells follicular helper (p = 0.033), M0 (p = 0.047) and M2 macrophages (p = 0.012) between stable and unstable atherosclerotic plaques. Compared with stable atherosclerotic plaques, unstable atherosclerotic plaques had a higher percentage of M2 macrophages. Moreover, correlation analysis indicated that the percentage of naïve CD4 T cells was strongly correlated with that of gamma delta T cells (r = 0.93, p < 0.001), while memory B cells were correlated with plasma cells (r = 0.85, p < 0.001). In summary, our study explored the abundance and difference of specific immune cell subgroups at unstable plaques, which would aid new immunotherapies for atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) is a newly discovered type of non-coding RNA, the abnormal expression of which has been demonstrated in many types of human tumors. So they have been considered as promising candidates as diagnostic and therapeutic targets in cancer. This research aimed to screen the profile of circRNA expression in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC). METHODS: Using the threshold of FDR < 0.05 and fold change > 2 or < 0.5, 5 up-regulated and 26 down-regulated circRNAs were identified. The reliability of sequencing was verified by the expression detection of randomly selected circRNAs via qRT-PCR. RESULTS: Moreover, the circRNA-miRNA system was established by bioinformatics approaches and successfully identified an interaction between circRNA ABCA13 and a cancer-related miRNA (miR-138-5p), which was also verified by qRT-PCR. Moreover, the predicted molecular interaction proved that circRNA ABCA13 may promote SACC through inhibition of miR-138-5p. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, this study has offered the first report about the circRNA expression profile and circRNA-miRNA network in SACC. All of the above could benefit the exploration of novel therapeutic target in SACC treatment.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking and PM2.5 are important risk factors of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). However, the joint association of cigarette smoking and PM2.5 with COPD is unknown. METHODS: A community-based study was conducted among urban and rural adults aged 40 + years between May and December of 2015 in Jiangsu Province, China. The outcome variable was spirometry-defined COPD. Explanatory measures were smoking status (non-smokers or smokers) and PM2.5 exposure [low level (< 75 µg/m3) or high level (≥ 75 µg/m3)]. Mixed-effects logistic regression models were applied to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) to investigate the associations of cigarette smoking and PM2.5 with COPD. RESULTS: The prevalence of COPD was 11.9% (95% CI = 10.9%, 13.0%) within the overall 3407 participants in this study. After adjustment for potential confounders and community-level clustering effect, smokers tended to develop COPD relative to non-smokers (OR = 2.46, 95% CI 1.76, 3.43), while only smokers exposed to high level PM2.5 were more likely to experience COPD (OR = 1.36; 95% CI 1.01, 1.83) compared to their counterparts exposed to low level PM2.5. Meanwhile, compared to non-smokers who exposed to low level PM2.5, non-smokers who exposed to high level PM2.5 (OR = 1.10, 95% CI 0.74, 1.64), smokers who exposed to low (OR = 2.22, 95% CI 1.51, 3.27) or high level PM2.5 (OR = 3.14, 95% CI 2.15, 4.59) were, respectively, more like to develop COPD. CONCLUSIONS: Cigarette smoking was positively associated with COPD among overall participants, while PM2.5 was in positive relation to COPD among smokers only. Moreover, cigarette smoking and PM2.5 might have an additive effect on the risk of COPD among adult smokers aged 40 years or older in China.

A pathogen was isolated from diseased pink-tailed chalceus Chalceus macrolepidotus during a high-mortality outbreak in a freshwater culture farm in Liaoyang, China. The diseased fish were characterized by disoriented behaviors, exophthalmos, and redness and swelling of the top of the head. A Gram-negative, pure strain of bacteria (CM0428) was isolated from the brain, kidney, and liver. The isolate was identified as Vibrio cholerae based on ompW gene amplification and 16S rRNA and gyrB gene sequence analysis. Serogroup testing indicated that CM0428 was a non-O1/O139 strain of V. cholerae. The challenge test showed that CM0428 exhibited strong virulence to pink-tailed chalceus, and hlyA and toxR virulence-related genes were detected. The isolate was sensitive to multi-class antibiotics, but resistant to tetracycline. Histological examination revealed that V. cholerae CM0428 infection caused multiple organ and tissue lesions, and typical pathological features were cell degeneration and necrosis.

BACKGROUND: We conducted a study to explore the relationship between pathological cytomorphologic features and the percentage of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive cells to better predict pulmonary adenocarcinoma prognosis with crizotinib treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We investigated 60 cases of patients with ALK-positive advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Immunohistochemistry was performed to screen for ALK rearrangement. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was used to detect the percentage of ALK-positive cells. The primary objectives of the study were the progression-free survival (PFS), the 3-year overall survival, and the 3-year overall survival (OS) rates. The secondary objectives of the study were the disease control rate (DCR) and the overall response rate (ORR). RESULTS: We compared the pathological cytomorphologic features of 60 cases of ALK-positive pulmonary adenocarcinoma, of which 21 cases were ALK-positive with signet ring cell cytomorphologic characteristics. There were statistical differences in the ORR (p = 0.019), DCR (p = 0.032), and PFS (p = 0.047) between the signet ring cell group and group without signet ring cells. Of these, 37 cases were ALK-positive with EML4 (echinoderm microtubule associated protein like 4)-ALK high percentage of positivity group. These cases benefited more from crizotinib treatment in the ORR (p = 0.046) and achieved a longer PFS (p = 0.036) compared to those with EML4-ALK low percentage of positivity group. CONCLUSIONS: Signet ring cell cytomorphologic characteristics of pulmonary adenocarcinoma are associated with the percentage of ALK-positive cells. Signet ring cell cytomorphologic characteristics and the percentage of ALK-positive cells might predict the prognosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma with crizotinib treatment. Although interspecific competition has long been recognised as a major driver of trait divergence and adaptive evolution, relatively little effort has focused on how it influences the evolution of intraspecific cooperation. Here we identify the mechanism by which the perceived pressure of interspecific competition influences the transition from intraspecific conflict to cooperation in a facultative cooperatively breeding species, the Asian burying beetle Nicrophorus nepalensis. We not only found that beetles are more cooperative at carcasses when blowfly maggots have begun to digest the tissue, but that this social cooperation appears to be triggered by a single chemical cue - dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) - emitted from carcasses consumed by blowflies, but not from control carcasses lacking blowflies. Our results provide experimental evidence that interspecific competition promotes the transition from intraspecific conflict to cooperation in N. nepalensis via a surprisingly simple social chemical cue that is a reliable indicator of resource competition between species.
