BACKGROUND: Melanoma is one of the most aggressive skin tumours for which the major risk factor is ultraviolet radiation. Sun protection is extremely important, especially for melanoma patients who, once diagnosed with melanoma, have 500 times greater chance of developing another melanoma than the general population. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we examined the perception of melanoma and attitudes towards sun protection among melanoma patients and compared their results with the patients suffering from other dermatological disorders. METHODS: In total, 240 participants were included in the study: 120 patients suffering from melanoma and 120 participants in the control group. The Sun Behaviour Patterns Questionnaire and the Brief Illness Perceptions Questionnaire were used in this study to assess sun behaviours and perception of melanoma. RESULTS: Melanoma patients have negative attitude towards sunbathing: 57% avoid sunbathing and 27% spend time in the sun only during swimming, otherwise seeking shade, whereas participants in the control group have more positive attitude towards sunbathing. Results indicate very short time of using sunscreen protection during the year and very small number of people using adequate SPF value, in both melanoma and control group. CONCLUSION: Participants in control group perceive melanoma as a more serious illness than patients who think that melanoma has mild symptoms, is easy to cure and control, has moderate consequences and lasts relatively long. Both melanoma patients and participants in the control group show relatively good sun behaviour patterns and slightly negative attitudes towards sun protection.

This research is focused on the immediate contribution of the bees and combs to honey volatiles in order to exclude these compounds as botanical-origin biomarkers for honey authentification. Therefore, the bees were closed in a hive containing empty combs under controlled food-flow conditions (saccharose solution). The obtained 'saccharose honey' probe samples were subjected to ultrasonic solvent extraction (USE), followed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry analyses (GC and GC/MS). A total of 66 compounds were identified. Higher alcohols made up ca. 50% of the total volatiles, mainly (Z)-octadec-9-en-1-ol, hexadecan-1-ol, and octadecan-1-ol, with minor percentages of undecan-1-ol, dodecan-1-ol, tetradecan-1-ol, pentadecan-1-ol, and heptadecan-1-ol. Other abundant compounds were saturated long-chain linear hydrocarbons, C(10)-C(25), C(27), and C(28), particularly C(23), C(25), and C(27)). Identified chemical structures were related to the composition of combs and cuticular waxes, and less to the bee pheromones. In addition, the impact of two-hour heat treatment at 80 degrees and one-year storage at room temperature on the same probe was investigated in order to identify thermal and storage artefacts. These findings can be considered as blank-trial probe (no plant source) for honey chemical profiling and identification of reliable botanical origin biomarkers.

The concentration of quinoxaline-2-carboxylic acid (QCA) determined by HPLC after alkaline hydrolysis of liver and muscle of swine, ranged from < 3 ng/g to 45.3 ng/g in liver, and from < 3 ng/g to 10.8 ng/g in muscle samples. After the 77th day of therapy QCA was found in samples of liver (9.7 ng/g). Recoveries obtained for both liver and muscle were 70% at 5 ng/g, 77% and 75% respectively at 10 ng/g, and 90% for both liver and muscle at 30 ng/g. This experiment was performed within the frame of the National Monitoring Programme of Residues in Animal Tissues in the Republic of Croatia.
