Purpose: Low- to middle-income nations contain more than 80% of the world's population; however, only 4% of articles in ophthalmology journals belong to these countries. We aim to analyze the global diversity of the editorial boards of ophthalmology journals. Methods: Cross-sectional study, including all journals in the Ophthalmology section of the SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR). Journals were classified according to the country of origin, SJR interquartile range (Q1-Q4), impact factor, and open-access policy. Global diversity among journals was determined by the country of affiliation of editors-in-chief and editorial board members. Nations were classified by income according to the World Bank's 2022 system. The association between editorial diversity and the journal's metrics and country of origin was analyzed using the χ2 test and the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: A total of 116 journals were included and 83.6% belonged to high-income nations. Only 18 (13.3%) editors-in-chief and 582 (13.5%) board members were affiliated with middle-income nations. The most prevalent middle-income countries in editorial boards were Brazil (n = 184, 4.26%), India (n = 150, 3.47%), Turkey (n = 42, 0.97%), and Iran (n = 36, 0.83%). Only 40 (1.07%) editorial board members of Q1 journals were affiliated with non-high-income nations, most belonging to India (n = 28, 70%). Journals from middle-income nations had a statistically significant lower prevalence in the first- and second-quartile ranking (P < 0.001) and a higher proportion of open-access policies (P = 0.019). Conclusions: A clear underrepresentation of low- to middle-income nations was observed in ophthalmology journals. Promoting editorial diversity and minimizing the possibility of editorial bias could lead to greater exposure to real-world data from resource-constrained settings. Translational Relevance: The documented underrepresentation of low- to middle-income nations in ophthalmology journals highlights the importance of promoting diversity and inclusion.

Besides sharing knowledge, values, and attitudes, the members of a profession share a way of understanding how to perceive life, also known as professional identity. The formation of this identity is related to the acquisition of multiple roles, responsibilities, and collaboration, defining their professional culture. The medical educator is a professional who is committed to student development, who is a leader in his field, and who is active in academic or clinical activities, demonstrating the commitment to the community. The objective of this study was to explore the professional culture through the perception of the medical educator identity. A qualitative method was implemented by applying a content analysis strategy. A sample of 39 medical educators participated in structured interviews. Answers transcription was analyzed unitizing assumptions, effects, enablers, and barriers through the professional culture model: individualism, balkanized, collegiality per project, and extended collaboration. The definition of the medical educator was associated with 44% to individualism, 31% balkanized, 13% collegiality per project, and 13% extended collaboration. Generally, contributions from Basic Science educators are more individual, and the projects in the university are part of the operation planned for the short and medium term. Clinical Science educators are used to working in medical specialty groups, and some of them are involved in strategical social projects that provide care for the community. A cultural change transitioning from a highly autonomous strategy toward meaningful collaborative projects can help physicians and health professionals to develop a shared vision of what it means to be a medical educator. The medical school should provide a sense of collegial community environment to set common goals and expectations with adequate resources, and leadership is the standard.

RESUMO

Students that enroll in a vocational orientation program develop an early interest in the profession. Their involvement generates a higher sense of personal wellbeing, as well as positive academic and professional outcomes. A program was developed for high school students to experience first-hand what it means to work on health sciences. Two years after, the effects of the vocational program were assessed to analyze students' motivation and satisfaction with their professional orientation.

Learning about forensic sciences is a crucial part of the formation of professionals working in medicine and health areas; this includes a range of coverage from legal-medical cases to forensic autopsies. However, knowledge of forensics by medical students is limited, because the teaching focus has been on the fundamentals of procedures in this field. To develop the necessary skills, specific support, and targeted learning tasks should be designed to enable the integration of interdisciplinary work in processes, infrastructure, and equipment used in a high-quality-forensic investigation. The innovative educational experience of the Crime Scene Investigation CSI Lab was a week-long activity using the pedagogical strategy of Challenge-Based Learning. It addresses the problem that students need training in an authentic setting. The intervention, in September 2017, included 33 students from different disciplines such as medicine, law, and marketing. They participated in various learning settings in multidisciplinary teams and were challenged by experts from the State Institute for Forensic Sciences to analyze specific processes. The outcomes of the CSI Lab implementations provided evidence of how the students benefited from the experience. The results showed that 80% of the teams had an excellent approach to the solution, justification of the proposal and feasibility assessment. However, only 60% achieved a solution that met the requirements. The educational process was assessed by their perceptions of the educational strategy of the CSI Lab experience. The results indicated that 88.9% of the students believed that the experience broadened their perspectives on forensic sciences. 73.1% thought that the design of the activities, visits, and plenaries added value to their academic training, and 88.9% found it to be interesting. Regarding whether or not the activities helped the participants to understand and perform a legal-medicine investigation, 92.6% believed that it did help them recognize and understand the interventional areas and processes necessary for the investigation. CONCLUSION: Students demonstrated high acceptance of the context-rich design of the practical activities and educational experiences that were grounded in active learning. The effect on curriculum design is that the interactions and interdisciplinarity of the programs must be assessed, as these experiences could motivate them to engage in solving the social challenges of the 21st century.

Introduction: Statistics show nowadays, bystanders provided Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in 40-46% of all out-of-the-hospital cardiac arrests. Strategies must focus on specialized training for non-medical personnel. Engaging new generations in self-care depends on the development of new approaches to address the issue. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of an innovative training in CPR through the perception of the participants. Material and methods: This study considered a quantitative approach with a descriptive and correlational design. This study had a convenience sample of 103 participants from undergraduate programs in different disciplines: Engineering, Health, Law, and Design with participated voluntarily in the innovate training. To understand the efficacy of the innovative training data was collected of the participants through a self-assessment rubric. While participants were taken part in the training, an expert assessor was observing the performance and scored the procedure using a similar rubric. Both rubrics use a 5-point Likert scale to assess the level of agreement with each sentence. Results: Self-assessment results show that students excel on identifying if a patient has a pulse (mean=4.47) and if a patient is breathing (mean=4.52). The results of the expert assessment indicate a higher level of performance in hand positioning (mean=4.75) and compression-ventilation coordination (mean=4.77).Discussion: These results are encouraging as participants gained confidence on basic procedures, the main challenges are still on skills that rely deeply on practice. Therefore, this training might need to be offered periodically, as any certification offered for health professionals. This study is a first attempt to design an innovative short term and effective training that universities can replicate to prepare their students for these life-saving skills.


Introducción:Las estadísticas muestran que hoy en día los transeúntes realizan la reanimación cardiopulmonar (RCP) en el 40-46% de las paradas cardíacas extrahospitalarias. Las estrategias deben centrarse en la formación especializada del personal no médico, por lo que es importante desarrollar; nuevos enfoques para abordar el tema y comprometer a las generaciones más jóvenes en el autocuidado. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la eficacia de un entrenamiento innovador en RCP a través de la percepción de los participantes.Ma-terial y métodos: Se utilizó un diseño cuantitativo para correlacionar ambas medidas de rendimiento. Este estudio consideró un enfoque cuantitativo con un diseño descriptivo y correlacional. Este estudio tuvo una muestra de conveniencia de 103 participantes de programas de pregrado en diferentes disciplinas: Ingeniería, Salud, Derecho y Diseño con participación voluntaria en el entrenamiento innovador. Para entender la eficacia de la formación innovadora se recogieron datos de los participantes a través de una rúbrica de autoevaluación. Mien-tras los participantes participaban en la formación, un evaluador experto observaba la actuación y puntuaba el procedimiento utilizando una rúbrica similar. Ambas rúbricas utilizan una escala Likert de 5 puntos para evaluar el nivel de acuerdo con cada frase.Resultados: Los resultados de la autoevaluación muestran que los estudiantes destacan en la identificación de si un paciente tiene pulso (media=4,47) y si un paciente respira (media=4,52). Los resultados de la evaluación de expertos indican un mayor nivel de rendimiento en la colocación de las manos (media=4,75) y en la coordinación compresión-ventilación (media=4,77). Discusión: Estos resultados son alentadores, ya que los participantes ganaron confianza en los procedimientos básicos; los principales retos siguen siendo las habilidades que dependen en gran medida de la práctica.
