RESUMO

AIMS: This article focuses on how, and if, urodynamics can help to identify which kidneys are in danger of deteriorating in function and also gives recommendations for future research. METHODS: At the International Consultation on Incontinence-Research Society (ICI-RS) in 2017, a multi-disciplinary group presented a literature search of what is known about the utility of Urodynamics, including ambulatory, and 24 h monitoring, in predicting upper urinary tract damage in neuro-urological patients and other lower urinary tract dysfunctions. Wider discussions regarding knowledge gaps, and ideas for future research ensued and are presented in this paper along with a review of the evidence. RESULTS: The current treatment strategy both in congenital and acquired neurogenic bladder is rather aggressive and successful when addressing hazards to kidney function. This article has highlighted uncertainties concerning the use of 40 cmH2O DLPP and even the lower value of 20. The current literature suggests that patients with spina bifida and those with spinal cord injury have a higher risk of developing upper urinary tract damage and kidney function impairment than those with multiple sclerosis. CONCLUSIONS: Future research should focus on less invasive methods to assess the risk to the upper and lower urinary tract such as urine and serum measurements of cytokines that are involved in the pathophysiology of urinary tract impairment.

Identifying the unnecessary H2 consumption existing in diesel hydrotreating process and calculating theoretical minimum H2 consumption are extremely critical for reducing H2 consumption in consideration of carbon reduction and resource utilization improvement. In this work, chemical reactions happened during diesel hydrotreating were categorized into hydrodesulfurization (HDS), hydrodenitrogenation (HDN), saturation of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs), saturation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), hydrogenation of olefins (HGO) and hydrocracking reactions (HCR). Then, in order to gain insights into where and how much H2 can be reduced, the ideal molecular compositions of the products were analyzed when theoretical minimum H2 was achieved for each type of reactions, which can give a genuine value of average relative molecular weight and average number of moles of H2 consumed per mole of reactants, leading to the establishment of method for calculating theoretical minimum H2 consumption. Additionally, the above method was used to calculate theoretical minimum H2 consumption of five diesel feedstocks with different properties to study the influence of content of S, N and PAHs in the feed on theoretical minimum H2 consumption. This method can provide guidance for experiments of H2 consumption reduction, and also help the refineries to save potential costs of H2.

Bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) induces bladder dysfunction and altered bladder architecture. Irrespective of the release of the obstruction, persistent bladder dysfunction severely affects the quality of life. A better understanding of the repair process offers an opportunity to enhance postintervention management. We subsequently evaluated the postobstructive repair process in mice subjected to 24 h BOO followed by release. Male and female mice bladders were obstructed for 24 h by placing a clip around the bladder neck. After the release of obstruction, the mice were studied for 3, 7, and 14 days to observe the bladder repair process over time. Voiding frequency and volume were recorded using the voiding spot assay, and the transcutaneous glomerular filtration rate (tGFR) was measured. Fibrogenesis and associated gene expressions and altered protein levels were evaluated in the bladder using histology, quantatative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and Western blot analyses. Bladder wall thickness was increased in both genders over time but occurred later in female mice. Moreover, collagen deposition in the smooth muscle layer increased over time in both genders. Male mice showed a decreased average voided volume at 3 days post release, while female mice showed no significant change during the time course. Fibrosis-related molecular events, including upregulation of fibronectin (FN) protein and Collagen-3 (Col-3) mRNA expression, were transient and normalized again at 14 days in both genders. Transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) and bone morphogenic protein (BMP)-7 mRNA expressions were upregulated at 14 days post release in both genders. Transcutaneous GFR remained normal during the time course. Release of 24 h BOO initiated a bladder remodeling process. The animal model enables a wide range of experiments to study bladder remodeling, and gender differences offer potential targets for understanding bladder fibrosis and adaptation with BOO.

Zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) have been gradually developed in recent years due to their abundant resources, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Therefore, ZIBs have received a great deal of attention from researchers, which are considered as the next generation of portable energy storage systems. However, poor overall performance of ZIBs restricts their development, which is attributed to zinc dendrites and a series of side reactions. Constructing 3D zinc anodes has proven to be an effective way to significantly improve their electrochemical performance. In this review, the challenges of zinc anodes in ZIBs, including zinc dendrites, hydrogen evolution and corrosion, as well as passivation, are comprehensively summarized and the energy storage mechanisms of the zinc anodes and 3D zinc anodes are discussed. 3D zinc anodes with different structures including fiberous, porous, ridge-like structures, plated zinc anodes on different substrates and other 3D zinc anodes, are subsequently discussed in detail. Finally, emerging opportunities and perspectives on the material design of 3D zinc anodes are highlighted and challenges that need to be solved in future practical applications are discussed, hopefully illuminating the way forward for the development of ZIBs.

BACKGROUND: Development of bladder fibrosis, loss of compliance, and voiding dysfunction are among the severe consequences of various lower urinary conditions, for example, bladder outlet obstruction (BOO), neurogenic bladder, and radiotherapy to the pelvic area. The bladder remodelling results in significant changes in bladder function and architecture, and may ultimately be deleterious for kidney function. The molecular signals underlying pathologic bladder remodelling, as well as the impact of gender, remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the bladder remodelling after one day BOO, whether the remodelling is different between different bladder sections, and whether genders may affect the remodelling. STUDY DESIGN: Thirty male and 30 female C57BL/6NRj mice were randomly divided into Control, Sham and BOO groups with ten mice per group. A 24-h total urethral obstruction was performed at the proximal urethra. Histological changes were observed via H&E, trichrome and immunohistochemistry staining. Harvested bladders were divided into upper and lower sections for analysis. Protein and gene expression were detected by Western blotting and qPCR. RESULTS: No significant changes in bladder wall thickness were observed following BOO, while increased bladder mass after BOO was found in female mice only. We detected FN and ⍺-SMA upregulation in the male upper bladder segment. Female BOO mice bladders showed increased α-SMA expression in both bladder segments, but no difference of FN was observed in either bladder segments. BOO-induced upregulation of TGF-ß and Gremlin were detected in both male and female bladders, while downregulation of BMP-7 was detected only in male bladders. Furthermore, phosphorylation of both SMAD2/3 and SMAD1/5/9 were increased in male bladders following BOO, whereas female mice exhibited increased pSMAD2/3 in the upper and increased pSMAD1/5/9 in the lower bladder segment. CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicate that some specific proteins and growth factors were detected as early alterations of tissue which may lead to fibrosis. In addition, the males tended to have more pronounced response than females. However, the causes and consequences of the findings need to be further investigated.

The gas-liquid interfacial dynamics of bubble breakup in a T junction was investigated. Four regimes were observed for a bubble passing through the T junction. It was identified by the stop flow that a critical width of the bubble neck existed: if the minimum width of the bubble neck was less than the critical value, the breakup was irreversible and fast; while if the minimum width of the bubble neck was larger than the critical value, the breakup was reversible and slow. The fast breakup was driven by the surface tension and liquid inertia and is independent of the operating conditions. The minimum width of the bubble neck could be scaled with the remaining time as a power law with an exponent of 0.22 in the beginning and of 0.5 approaching the final fast pinch-off. The slow breakup was driven by the continuous phase and the gas-liquid interface was in the equilibrium stage. Before the appearance of the tunnel, the width of the depression region could be scaled with the time as a power law with an exponent of 0.75; while after that, the width of the depression was a logarithmic function with the time.
