RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of familial MS (fMS) in Belgrade MS population, discern the differences between the persons with fMS and sporadic MS, and to detect the presence of anticipation phenomenon in fMS patients. METHODS: The data on the demographic and clinical characteristics of MS patients was obtained from the Belgrade MS population Registry. In cases of vertical transmission of MS, the family members were divided into the younger and older generation, in order to assess the potential presence of anticipation phenomenon. To adjust for follow-up time bias, a secondary analysis including only patients who had the onset of symptoms before 39 years (75.percentile), and those who were 39 + years, was performed. RESULTS: The prevalence of fMS in Belgrade MS population is 6.4%. FMS cases had earlier age at MS symptom onset (30.4 vs. 32.3 years) compared to sporadic MS cohort. When comparing fMS cases across generations, the younger generation had significantly lower age at onset compared with the older one (25.8 vs. 35.7 years, p < 0.001). After adjustment for the different length of the follow-up, the difference in age at symptom onset between the groups was reduced, but it still existed and was statistically significant (30.0 years in younger vs. 36.4 years in older generation, p = 0.040). CONCLUSION: In our study, the analysis of fMS cases across generations, showed an earlier age of symptom onset in the younger generation, even after adjustment. These results indicate the possibility of existence of anticipation phenomenon.

RESUMO

The Death Attitude Profile-Revised (DAP-R), one of the most widely used scales for assessing death attitudes is a multidimensional questionnaire capable of measuring a wide range of attitudes towards death. The aim of our study was to assess the reliability and validity of the Serbian version of the DAP-R. The study was conducted in October 2022 and included a total of 547 students of the Faculty of Medicine University of Belgrade (FMUB). Based on Cronbach's alpha coefficient values, our data show good reliability of the DAP-RSp (Serbian version). In our study, the confirmatory factor analysis showed a good fit of the data to the original factor structure with minor discrepancy; compared to the original version (five factors), our analysis yielded one more factor (six factors in total), however, almost all items had factor loading >0.3 on the appropriate scale.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Investigation of the comorbidity burden in persons with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) has become increasingly important. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships of cardiovascular disease (CVD) comorbidities and type 2 diabetes with the disability progression. MATERIALS & METHODS: The retrospective cohort study was conducted at the Clinic of Neurology, Belgrade. The Belgrade MS population Registry, which comprises 2725 active MS cases, was used as the source of data. The mean duration of the disease was 21.6 ± 12.5 years. Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) was followed in all PwMS in the Registry. In the statistical analysis, the Cox proportional hazard regression analysis and Kaplan-Meier curve were performed. RESULTS: Hypertension statistically significantly contributed to more rapid reaching investigated levels of irreversible disability (EDSS 4.0, 6.0, and 7.0), while the presence of any of the investigated CVD comorbidities and type 2 diabetes significantly contributed to faster reaching EDSS 4.0 and EDSS 6.0. In a multivariable model, progression index (PI) was singled out (HR = 3.171, p < .001), indicating that higher progression index (PI) was an independent predictor of CVD occurrence in MS patients. In the case of type 2 diabetes, PI (p < .001) and MS phenotype (p = .015) were statistically significant in multivariable Cox regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Our study confirms the impact of CVD comorbidities and type 2 diabetes in MS on the progression of disability as measured by EDSS in the large cohort of PwMS from the population Registry.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To translate, culturally adapt and validate the Coronary Revascularisation Outcome Questionnaire (CROQ), a disease-specific tool for measuring health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with ischaemic heart disease (IHD), into Serbian language (CROQ-S). METHODS: Validation study was performed at the Clinic for Cardiac Surgery and Clinic for Cardiology, University Clinical Centre of Serbia. We included a convenience sample of 600 patients with IHD divided into four groups. Acceptability, reliability and validity of the CROQ-S were assessed. RESULTS: CROQ-S was acceptable to patients as demonstrated by less than 1% of missing data for each single item. Cronbach's Alpha was higher than the criterion of 0.70 for all scales in each version except the Cognitive Functioning scale which only met this criterion in the CABG pre-revascularisation version. Mean values of item-total correlations were greater than 0.30 for all scales except the Cognitive Functioning scale in both the pre-revascularisation groups. Compared to the original version, exploratory factor analysis in our study showed more factors; however, the majority of items had a factor loading greater than 0.3 on the right scale. Correlations of CROQ-S scales with the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey and Seattle Angina Questionnaire showed the expected pattern whereby scales measuring similar constructs were most highly correlated. CONCLUSION: CROQ-S is an acceptable, reliable and valid disease-specific instrument for measuring HRQoL in this sample of Serbian speaking patients with IHD both before and after coronary revascularisation. However, the Cognitive Functioning scale did not meet all the psychometric criteria and further validation of its responsiveness is required.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Among different comorbidities occurring in multiple sclerosis (MS), the presence of malignant diseases in these patients is of the particular importance. The aim of this study was to determine the malignant diseases burden in a whole cohort of patients with MS in the Belgrade region, based on the Belgrade population registry data. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study comprises 2725 MS patients from the MS Registry, which represents a source for all necessary demographic and clinical data. Firstly, the Registry was searched for all persons with MS who had cancer comorbidity, during the period 1996-2019. Diagnosis of cancer was validated by the patients' medical documentation. In order to investigate factors associated with the occurrence of any type of the cancer and/ or breast cancer only, in persons with MS, different logistic regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: A total of 64 persons with 69 malignant diseases were observed (prevalence 2.53%). The most frequent malignancies in males were skin cancer (50.0%) and in females, breast cancer (23.2%). The cumulative incidence of cancer comorbidity in persons with MS was 324.9 new cases per 100,000 person-years for the total population (137.6/100,000 in males and 403.6 per 100,000 in females). Comparison of cancer incidence rate between MS and general Belgrade population revealed lower risk for malignancy occurrence in the MS population in total (standardized incidence ratio, SIR = 0.58, 95% CI 0.16-1.49). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate that MS patients in the Belgrade region have lower risk for the development of malignancy than age- and sex-matched general population.

RESUMO

Background and Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate vision-related quality of life (VR-QOL) and treatment satisfaction (TS) in patients with diabetic retinopathy treated with panretinal photocoagulation (PRP). Material and Methods: The panel study included 95 patients who underwent PRP for diabetic retinopathy. Eligible patients with no history of previous PRP were interviewer-administered the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25) and Retinopathy Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire (RetTSQ) beforehandand one month after the last session of laser application. The study was conducted between June 2017 and June 2019 at tertiary care center in Serbia, Belgrade. We assessed pre- to post-PRP values of the composite score and subscale scores of VFQ-25 and RetTSQ, using a paired samples t-test. Univariate logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between binary outcomes and potential predictors. Multivariate regression included predictors from univariate analyses that were statistically significant. Results: The mean VFQ-25 composite score was 65.4 ± 17.4 before and 63.3 ± 19.5 after PRP (p = 0.045). Subscale analysis showed that two of the 11 items achieved a significant decrease after laser application (general vision and dependency). The mean RetTSQ score at baseline was 60.0 ± 11.8 and at the exit visit was 60.3 ± 12.3 (p = 0.858). Sub-scale analysis showed significant deterioration for five of the 13 items. Multivariate logistic regression found that significant predictor of VFQ-25 composite score reduction was fewer laser burns (p = 0.002) while significant predictor of RetTSQ total score reduction was presence of hyperlipidaemia (p = 0.021). Conclusion: The use of vision-related quality of life and treatment satisfaction questionnaires in conjunction with clinical examination, appears to provide a more comprehensive overview of an individual's daily well-being following PRP. Laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy leads to deterioration of some of the patients' perceived VR-QOL and TS. Health-care providers should inform patients about their treatment options and together decide which therapeutic method is best for them.

RESUMO

Cognitive impairment is one of the most frequently reported symptoms in persons with multiple sclerosis (MS). The Brief International Cognitive Assessment for Multiple Sclerosis (BICAMS) has been recommended as a standardized international screening and monitoring tool for brief cognitive assessment. The aim of our study was to assess the reliability and validity of the Serbian version of the BICAMS. A total of 500 relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) patients and 69 age-, gender- and education-matched healthy control (HC) subjects were examined. All participants performed the BICAMS test battery, which includes the oral version of the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), California Verbal Learning Test second edition (CVLT-II), and Brief Visuospatial Memory Test Revised (BVMTR). A randomly selected subset of patients were retested one to three weeks after baseline. Statistically significant differences between patients and HCs were evident on the SDMT and BVMTR (p<0.001). HCs had higher CVLT-II scores but this difference did not reach statistical significance (p=0.063). Cognitive impairment, defined as an abnormal test score on ≥1 subtest, was found in 62.9% of MS patients. There were statistically significant correlations between BICAMS scores and age, education, EDSS and disease duration in patient sample. Test-retest reliability was confirmed with Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.70 in all measures. This study supported the reliability and validity of the Serbian BICAMS, although the CVLT-II version tested here lacked sensitivity to detect MS compared to healthy volunteers.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Comorbidities occur frequently in persons with multiple sclerosis (MS). The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of the most common comorbidities in the population of MS patients in Belgrade, Serbia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data on diagnosed and fully documented comorbidities were taken from the Belgrade MS population registry. The list of explored comorbidities included cardiovascular, malignant, and autoimmune diseases; psychiatric disorders; epilepsy; and type 2 diabetes. In the data analysis, crude, age- and gender-specific, and age-adjusted prevalence was calculated. Additionally, comorbidities were analyzed in patients with various MS phenotypes. RESULTS: The most prevalent group of comorbidities were psychiatric (prevalence (Prev) = 20.59%, 95% CI 19.10-22.17) and cardiovascular comorbidities (Prev = 15.23%, 95% CI 13.93-16.63). The most prevalent single comorbidities were depression (Prev = 11.82%, 95% CI 10.64-13.11) and hypertension (Prev = 11.41%, 95% CI 10.25-12.68). Type 2 diabetes was significantly more prevalent in patients with primary progressive MS compared with the patients with relapsing-remitting and secondary progressive MS (p < 0.001). We found statistically significant positive correlation between number of comorbidities and progression index (p < 0.001). Patients treated with disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) had significantly higher risk of developing comorbidity, after treatment initiation, compared with those who were untreated (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated high prevalence of comorbidities in persons with MS, with psychiatric and cardiovascular diseases being the most common. Furthermore, our findings confirmed the association of comorbidities with progression of disability and emphasized their role in treatment decision-making in MS.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to examine the association between exposure to indoor SHS and self-reported HRQoL among healthy non-smoking students at the University of Belgrade, Serbia and Kosovska Mitrovica located in the post-conflict Kosovo province. Students who presented at Student Public Health Center in Belgrade in 2009 and Kosovska Mitrovica in 2015 for mandatory health checks were invited to participate. Data were collected using socio-demographic and behavioral questionnaire, health-related quality of life questionnaire Short Form-36 (SF-36) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). A total of 82.3% students in Belgrade sample and 76.0% in Kosovska Mitrovica sample reported daily exposure to indoor SHS. After adjustment for socio-demographic characteristics and behavior, daily exposure to indoor SHS for more than 6 hours was associated with poorer Vitality (ß = -5.55, 95% confidence interval [CI] -9.49, -1.61) and Mental Health (ß = 5.00, 95% CI-8.94, -1.07) only among students at the University of Belgrade. This study showed that the association between longer daily indoor SHS exposure and poor mental health HRQoL was not consistent in non-conflict and post-conflict setting. This association was not found in a post-conflict setting. Strict no smoking policies are needed in student housing, university campuses and all public spaces.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and contributing factors among parents of children with solid tumors in Serbia. METHODS: The cross-sectional study included 51 parents of children treated for different solid tumors at the Institute of Oncology and Radiology of Serbia. Parents filled out validated Serbian version of SF-36 questionnaire. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify predictors of total score of SF-36. RESULTS: Almost all parents (94.1%) were mothers and average age was 38.6 ± 6.7 years. Majority of children had brain tumors (43.1%), followed by bone tumors (37.3%). The hierarchical regression analysis showed that socio-demographic characteristics explained 26% of the variance (p > 0.05) of the total score of SF-36. Addition of quality of life of children assessed by parents in the second model caused an increase of 21% in the variance explained (p < 0.05). After adding the Beck Depression Inventory score in the third block, an additional 18% of the variance in total score was explained (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that HRQoL measured by SF-36 in parents of children with cancer is strongly influenced by depression and quality of life of children assessed by parents.

RESUMO

Self-perceived stress during undergraduate medical training could influence forthcoming career choices. The aim of this study was to explore the attitudes and potential differences between 1st and 6th year students regarding aspects of medical training and career plans. As many as 570 students in 1st and 400 in 6th year of studies at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, were recruited on December 2-9, 2013. Data were acquired through a self-administered questionnaire. Students in both years rated "Helping other people" as the most important reason to study medicine. Freshmen rated statistically significantly higher 'good incomes' and 'social status' as reasons to study medicine (p=0.003 and p=0.037, respectively). The most desirable fields of specialization were surgery and internal medicine (36.4% and 18.7% for 1st year, and 26.3% and 36.6% for 6th year, respectively). Significantly more freshmen would prefer working abroad (χ2=3.891, p=0.029). In terms of careers abroad, students in both years expressed the highest interest in working in western and northern Europe. Desires for specialty training among medical students follow the pattern of the most frequent disciplines in the Serbian physician population, with gender differences comparable to other populations. A certain percentage of students would likely emigrate.

RESUMO

Introduction: To assess incidence and mortality trends of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in Belgrade (Serbia) in a 15-year period (from 1999 to 2013). Material and Methods: Data were obtained from the Cancer Registry of Serbia, Institute of Public Health of Serbia. Standardized incidence and mortality rates per 100,000 inhabitants were calculated by direct standardization method using World Standard Population. Analysis of raw data indicated single-digit numbers per year and per 5-year age cohorts. Therefore, we merged years of diagnosis to three-year intervals, creating so-called "moving averages". We also merged study population to 10-year age cohorts. Results: Both incidence and mortality rates increased with age, i.e., the lowest rates were observed in the youngest age groups and the highest rates were observed in oldest age groups. In all age groups, except the youngest (15⁻24 years), AML incidence was statistically significantly higher in men compared with women. Average age-adjusted incidence was 2.73/100,000 (95% confidence interval (CI) 2.28⁻3.71). Average age-adjusted mortality was 1.81/100,000 (95% CI 1.30⁻2.26). Overall, there were no significant changes in incidence trend. Age-adjusted incidence rates had increasing tendency among men aged 65⁻74 years (B = 0.80, standard error (SE) = 0.11; p = 0.005) and in total population aged 65⁻74 years (B = 0.41, SE = 0.09; p = 0.023). Increasing tendency in incidence of AML among women was observed in age group >75 years (B = 0.63, SE = 0.14; p = 0.019). No changes of mortality trend were observed. Conclusion: There was no significant change in trends of AML from 1999 to 2013 in the population of Belgrade.

RESUMO

Despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine since 1982, overall coverage of hepatitis B vaccination among healthcare workers (HCWs) has not reached a satisfactory level in many countries worldwide. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of hepatitis B vaccination, and to assess the predictors of hepatitis B vaccination status among HCWs in Serbia. Of 380 randomly selected HCWs, 352 (92.6%) were included in the study. The prevalence of hepatitis B vaccination acceptance was 66.2%. The exploratory factor analyses using the vaccination-refusal scale showed that items clustered under 'threat of disease' explained the highest proportion (30.4%) of variance among those declining vaccination. The factor analyses model of the potential reasons for receiving the hepatitis B vaccine showed that 'social influence' had the highest contribution (47.5%) in explaining variance among those vaccinated. In the multivariate adjusted model the following variables were independent predictors of hepatitis B vaccination status: occupation, duration of work experience, exposure to blood in the previous year, and total hepatitis B-related knowledge score. Our results highlight the need for well-planned national policies, possibly including mandatory hepatitis B immunisation, in the Serbian healthcare environment.

RESUMO

AIM: To validate and cross-culturally adapt Croatian and Serbian versions of composite autonomic symptom score-31 (COMPASS-31) for the detection of dysautonomia in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS: A total of 179 patients, 67 with clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) and 112 with MS, completed the COMPASS-31 at two MS centers in Zagreb and Belgrade between April 1 and October 31, 2016. Demographic and clinical data including age, gender, MS phenotypes, and the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score were collected. RESULTS: The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of COMPASS-31 total score was 0.844 for the Croatian MS sample and 0.779 for the Serbian MS sample. A joint analysis yielded Cronbach's alpha coefficients ranging from 0.394 to 0.796, with values in four domains higher than 0.700. In Croatian and Serbian samples and the total study sample, the Cronbach's alpha coefficient of COMPASS-31 was 0.785. Reproducibility measured by intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was acceptable (ICC=0.795). With regard to the clinical validity, significant correlation was found between EDSS and the COMPASS-31 total score (P<0.001). Furthermore, significant differences between MS phenotypes were detected for bladder and gastrointestinal domains and for the COMPASS-31 total score (PP<0.001, P=0.005, and P=0.027, respectively). Finally, significant differences between MS phenotypes in patients with score >0, which implies the existence of at least one of the symptoms investigated in each domain, were detected for secretomotor and bladder domains (P=0.015 and PP<0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: COMPASS-31 represents a valid and acceptable self-assessment instrument for the detection of dysautonomia in MS patients.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to assess attitudes and practice of blood donation among medical students. Medical students were recruited at Medical Faculty, University of Belgrade, Serbia. Of 973 students, 38.4% of freshmen and 41.4% of final year students have donated blood (χ(2) = 0.918, p = 0.186). Blood donors had significantly more positive attitude towards some aspects of blood donation. Being female, residing in a city other than the capital and previous blood donation experience were independent predictors of positive attitude towards being a blood donor to an unknown person. Efforts are required to augment blood donor pool among future physicians.

RESUMO

AIM: To assess final year medical students' self-perception of their practical skills. METHODS: The study was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade during compulsory practical sessions in the period December 2-9, 2013 and 390 students agreed to participate (response rate 77.8%). The questionnaire included questions on demographic characteristics, 21 questions on students' self-perception of their practical skills, and 1 question on students' self-perceived readiness to start working with patients. RESULTS: Cronbach's α for the entire scale was 0.891. Students felt most confident about measuring arterial pulse and blood pressure and taking patients' history (average score 10 for all three skills) and least confident about placing a urinary catheter (average score 1) and suturing a wound (average score 2). They rated their readiness to work with patients with 5.0 out of 10.0 points. The total score did not correlate with students' average mark (Spearman's ρ=0.039; P=0.460) and the average mark did not correlate with the self-perceived readiness to work with patients (Spearman's ρ=-0.048; P=0.365). CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that medical students lack confidence to perform various clinical procedures, particularly those related to surgical interventions. To improve students' confidence, clinical curriculum should include either more hours of practical work or ensure closer supervision of practical training in wards.

RESUMO

Despite a plethora of studies on overall attitudes related to organ donation in a health care setting, little is known as to whether or not medical students at various levels of undergraduate training have distinctive attitudes towards donation. The purpose of this study was to analyze attitudes of first- and sixth-year students towards organ donation. A total of 988 students in first (573) and the final, sixth, year (415) were recruited at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade (Serbia), in the period 2-9 December, 2013. Data were collected using an anonymous questionnaire. There were 3.0% of first-year and 3.9% of sixth-year students who were registered donors (p = 0.019). Sixth-year students felt statistically significantly more positive towards signing an organ donor card [odds ratio (OR) 1.45, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.13-1.88]. Sixth-year students also considered that organ donation was sufficiently promoted, as well as that organ donation should be practiced unless there is a written notice of objection. In addition, sixth-year students had more confidence in local organ transplant institutions. In a multivariate logistic regression analysis significant predictor of positive attitude for signing organ donor card was being blood donor (OR 1.55, 95% CI 1.03-2.35). Undergraduate training and increase in overall medical knowledge seem to contribute in shaping positive attitudes towards being an organ donor. It would be beneficial that strategies for organ donation promotion target local centers for blood donor recruitment. Nevertheless, further promotion of organ donation is necessary to expand the total donor pool.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to determine whether e-learning as a new teaching concept was acceptable for second-year undergraduates and to compare attitudes and exam results of students who followed electronic compared with classroom seminars. The electronic seminars (e-seminars) were developed several months prior to start of the epidemiology course for second-year students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade. The students who applied for e-seminars accessed their content during summer semester (February-May) 2014. E-seminars were set according to the existing topics in practical workbook and designed using Moodle, a free, open-source, personal home page web application for producing modular internet-based courses. To evaluate the motives for enrollment and satisfaction with seminars, two surveys (pre- and post-course) were administered. Students' exam grades were registered over 4 exam sessions (June-October 2014) and compared according to seminar program. Out of 516 students in the second year, 60 (11.6 %) applied for e-seminars (mean age 21 years). Students considered the reason "It's easier to do assignments from home" as the strongest motive to participate. When compared to classroom seminars, students in e-seminars had significantly more fun (p = 0.003), thought that e-seminars were better mode to learn epidemiology (p = 0.030) and would recommend them to other colleagues (p = 0.001). There was no significant difference in average grade received at the oral exam in epidemiology (t = 0.071, p = 0.944). E-seminars in undergraduate epidemiology course add a novel, easy-to-follow and amusing mode of learning. Based on this pilot study, e-seminars in epidemiology will be available for next generations of students, while further improvement of e-seminars could include expansion of seminar syllabus and development of discussion fora.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the frequency and attitude of medical students towards cleaning their stethoscopes. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in the first week of December 2013. The study included 771 students (397 in their fourth and 374 in their sixth year) from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, Serbia. An anonymous questionnaire was distributed to students before the start of compulsory lessons in classrooms. RESULTS: 317 of the 397 fourth-year students (79.8%) and 306 of the 374 sixth-year students (81.9%) cleaned their stethoscope. The stethoscope diaphragm was most commonly cleaned, while the flexible tubing was the least commonly cleaned area, mainly using ethyl alcohol-based agents. The strongest positive attitude was observed for the statement 'It is important that my stethoscope is clean' (4.3 out of 5.0). A positive correlation (Spearman's x03C1; = 0.105) was observed between a higher frequency of cleaning and the stronger positive notion that a stethoscope should be cleaned. CONCLUSION: A considerably high proportion of the students studied had ever cleaned their stethoscopes. Based on the students' responses, it would be useful to implement instructions on stethoscope hygiene in the regular practical curriculum with the aim of applying stethoscope disinfection in daily work.

RESUMO

Cerebellar neurodegenerative ataxias are a group of disorders affecting the cerebellum and its pathways with different neurological structures. Transcranial sonography (TCS) has been used for the evaluation of brain parenchymal structures in various diseases because of its fast and safe utilization, especially in neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of our study was to investigate TCS characteristics of patients with neurodegenerative cerebellar ataxias. In our study, we included 74 patients with cerebellar degenerative ataxia; 36.5% had autosomal dominant onset, while 33.8% had sporadic onset. Standardized ultrasonographic planes were used for the identification of brain structures of interest. The SARA, INAS, neuropsychological and psychiatric scales were used for the further clinical evaluation of our study participants. The brainstem raphe was discontinued in 33.8% of the patients. The substantia nigra (SN) hyperechogenicity was identified in 79.7%. The third and fourth ventricle enlargement had 79.7% and 45.9% of patients, respectively. A positive and statistically significant correlation was found between SN hyperechogenicity with dystonia (p < 0.01), rigidity and dyskinesia (p < 0.05). The higher SARA total score is statistically significantly correlated with the larger diameter of the III (r = 0.373; p = 0.001) and IV ventricles (r = 0.324; p = 0.005). In such patients, the echogenicity of substantia nigra has been linked to extrapyramidal signs, and raphe discontinuity to depression. Furthermore, ataxia and its clinical subtypes have positively correlated with the IV ventricle diameter, indicating brain atrophy and brain mass reduction.
