RESUMO

Expression of inducible NO-synthase mRNA and myocardial infiltration with neutrophils were studied in rats with modeled permanent ischemia and ischemia/reperfusion models. Expression of inducible NO synthase mRNA in the ischemic region increased significantly in 3, 3.5, and 4 h in modeled ischemia/reperfusion and in 3.5 and 4 h in permanent ischemia. Myocardial infiltration with neutrophils was significantly higher than in intact controls throughout the experiment without significant intergroup differences. In non-ischemic myocardium, enhanced expression of inducible NO synthase mRNA and moderate neutrophilic-lymphocytic myocardial infiltration were also observed in 3.5, and 4 h after ischemia.

RESUMO

The twenty-first century is marked with aggressive development of the wireless communications (satellite, mobile phones, Internet, Wi-Fi). In addition to thousand of satellites that deliver radio and TV signals, large satellite and base station networks secure intensive instant delivery of audio and video information. It is fair to say that that the entire civilization, both biosphere and mankind are exposed to continuous exposure of multitude of radiofrequency (RF) signals. It should be taken into account that the entire world population is exposed to exponentially increasing RF radiation from base stations and satellite antennas. While several years ago the potential hazard was connected with placement of mobile phones close to human head, today "smart phones" represent small, but powerful computers continuously receiving audio and video data. The largest group of users is the children and teenagers who "need" to communicate nearly 24 h a day. This is even more important because cell phones and tablets may be seen in the hands of children as little as two years in age. There is no way to assess and predict the potential damages of children brain, vision and hearing under exposure to RF radiation. The WHO precautionary principle and IARC classification must be applied in discussing the potential hazard of the use of today's and tomorrow's communication devices.

RESUMO

Peculiarities of the development of morphological and anatomical structures of the root system have been studied in the seedlings of three Impatiens species at the early and subsequent stages of their ontogenesis. Correspondence between the revealed structure and the ecological originality of species, especially in the case of the aboriginal touch-me-not balsam, whose allorhizy can be revealed only at the anatomical level, is discussed.

RESUMO

The progress in understanding the patterns of evolution of ontogeny is hindered by the fact that many features of ontogeny are counterintuitive (as well as the features of other processes related to self-organization, self-assembly, and spontaneous increase in complexity). The basic principle of ontogeny of multicellular organisms is that it is the process of self-assembly of ordered multicellular structures by means of coordinated behavior of many individual modules (cells), each of which follows the same set of"rules" encoded in the genome. These rules are based on the genetic regulatory networks. We hypothesize that many specific features of ontogeny that seem nontrivial or enigmatic are, in fact, the inevitable consequences of this basic principle. If so, they do not need special explanations. In order to verify this hypothesis, we developed the computer program "Evo-Devo" based on the above principle. The program is designed to model the self-assembly of ordered multicellular structures from an aggregation of dividing cells that originate from a single original cell (zygote). Each cell follows a set of rules of behavior ("genotype") that can be specified arbitrarily by the experimenter, and is the same for all cells in the embryo (each cell is programmed in exactly the same way as all other cells). It is not allowed to specify rules for groups of cells or for the whole embryo: only local rules that should be followed at the level of a single cell are possible. The analysis of phenotypic implementation of different genotypes revealed several features which are present in the ontogeny of real organisms and are regularly reproduced in the model. These include: inherent stochasticity; inescapable necessity of development of stabilizing adaptations based on negative feedback in order to decrease this stochasticity; equifinality (noise resistance) resulting from these adaptations; the ability of ontogeny to respond to major perturbations by generating new morphological structures that differ from the "normal" ones, but have similar level of complexity; the similarity of phenotypic manifestations of different mutations; channeling of possible evolutionary transformations of ontogeny; Waddington's creodes; high probability of destabilization of ontogeny (e.g., because of mutations); the possibility of a new morphological character to appear initially as a rare anomaly (low penetrance of many mutations); pleiotropy of mutations affecting ontogeny; spontaneous emergence of morphogenetic correlations; integrity of the developing organism. The fact that these features are regularly reproduced in the model implies that they are probably the inevitable consequences of the basic principle of ontogeny of multicellular organisms formulated above.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of therapeutic electromagnetic fields (TEMF) on chronic low back pain. Secondary objectives included the investigation of the effects of TEMF on psychometric measures. SETTING: Pain Research center in an Urban Academic Rehabilitation Facility. DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, single-blind, placebo (sham) treatment-controlled design in which participants were evaluated over a 6-week period. A total of 40 subjects were randomly assigned: 20 subjects to 15 milliTESLA (mT) treatment using a prototype electromagnetic field device and 20 to sham treatment. INTERVENTIONS: After a 2-week baseline period, eligible individuals were randomized to one of the treatment groups (sham or 15 mT) for six 30-minute treatments over 2 weeks, then a 2-week follow-up period. OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome measure was the self-report of pain severity using a 100 mm visual analog scale collected using a twice daily McGill Pain Questionnaire-Short Form. Several secondary measures were assessed. RESULTS: Both groups (15 mT and sham) improved over time (P < 0.05). Although groups were similar during the treatment period, treated subjects (TEMF of 15 mT) improved significantly over sham treatment during the 2-week follow-up period (20.5% reduction in pain; F(1,34) = 10.62, P = 0.003). There were no reported serious adverse events. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that TEMF may be an effective and safe modality for the treatment of chronic low back pain disorders. More studies are needed to test this hypothesis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A new approach to cancer therapy based on the application of therapeutic electromagnetic fields (TEMF) has been developed by EMF Therapeutics, Inc., Chattanooga, TN, USA. This study was designed to assess the effect of TEMF on tumor vascularization and growth of murine 16/C mammary adenocarcinoma cells in C3H/HeJ mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Implanted tumors were allowed to grow for seven days until the tumor volume reached 100 mm3 before treatment was started. Mice (20 per control, 10 per EMF exposed group) received treatment (10 minutes per day with 0, 10 mT, 15 mT or 20 mT) with a 120 pulses per second pulsating magnetic field. Tumor growth was assessed throughout the treatment period. The extent of tumor vascularization was evaluated by immunohistochemical staining for CD31. RESULTS: Exposure to TEMF significantly reduced tumor growth, significantly reduced the percentage of area stained for CD31 indicating a reduction in the extent of vascularization and there was a concomitant increase in the extent of tumor necrosis. CONCLUSION: A novel TEMF treatment safely reduced growth and vascularization of implanted breast cancers in mice. IMPLICATION: TEMF may prove a useful adjuvant to increase the therapeutic index of conventional cancer therapy.

RESUMO

Conventional retinal laser photocoagulation is presently performed by an ophthalmologist manually aiming a low-power laser beam at a desired site and firing a high-power laser for a preselected interval of time. To automate this process a retinal tracker must acquire a target, track small saccades, and identify loss of track during a large saccade. The authors successfully implemented a real-time algorithm that used a simple computer, video digitizing card, low light video camera, and fundus camera to perform rudimentary tracking on a photograph of a retina undergoing smooth circular motion. The algorithm tracked speeds up to 5 Hz, or 27 degrees/s, which equated to the retina moving in a 525 microns diameter circle.

RESUMO

The rapid development of science and technology exposes living organisms to a wide range of electromagnetic fields. Some life-style and occupational conditions are associated with a level of electromagnetic fields higher than average. A series of epidemiological studies has raised concern about possible cancer risk of electromagnetic fields generated by power lines and electrical appliances. In contrast, hundreds of thousands of patients world-wide have been cured by use of electromagnetic fields. Biological effects of low-level electromagnetic radiation have become the focus of a number of studies. However, there are not enough basic scientific data related to mechanisms of action of electromagnetic fields. This paper proposes a biophysical approach to the estimation of the environmental importance of electromagnetic fields. The methods of collecting data, dosimetry, possible mechanisms of action and open problems are discussed in this review.

RESUMO

Time varying magnetic fields are most often employed for therapeutic purposes and are present in environmental sources. In order for an electromagnetic field bioeffect to be possible, the signal parameters should not only satisfy the dielectric properties of the target, but also induce sufficient voltage to be detectable above thermal noise. The problem of the sensitivity of living cells and tissues is discussed in relation to signal/noise ratio at the target site. Some biophysical models for interactions of weak electromagnetic fields with biological systems are summarized. Cell studies and therapeutic application of electric and magnetic fields indicate that weak electromagnetic fields can have a profound effect on a large variety of biological systems.

RESUMO

The effects of magnetic fields on biological membranes in general and on the red blood cell membrane in particular have been studied intensively in the last two decades. A variety of methods for evaluation of magnetic field action on the structure and function of biological membranes has been used. It has been suggested /1/ that the cell membrane can be considered as one of the primary targets affected by magnetic field exposure.

RESUMO

The influence of compound IS-35 on intraocular pressure of unanesthetized rabbits was studied. In some cases intraocular pressure was measured with either the tonometer of Schiotz and was calculated in mmHg according to Leydhecker's scale (1973), or with the tonometer of Maclakov. Intraocular pressure was measured before and at 30, 60, 120, 180, 240 and 360 min after topical application of IS-35, timolol and trimetoquinol. It was established that IS-35 applied locally in the eye as 0.5% solution or collyrium decreases statistically significantly intraocular pressure. This effect was similar to that of timolol and exceeded significantly the effect of trimetoquinol. The experimental study on the beta-adrenergic adenylate cyclase showed that the mechanism of action of IS-35 on ophthalmotonus most probably is similar to the effect of timolol and is due to the suppression of aqueous humor formation.

RESUMO

There is increasing interest in the application of magnetic/electromagnetic fields for therapeutic purposes. Magnetotherapy provides non-invasive, safe and easy to apply methods to directly treat the site of injury, the source of pain and inflammation as well as other types of dysfunction. This review summarizes several decades of experience worldwide in studying biological and clinical effects initiated by various magnetic and electromagnetic fields. The physiological basis for tissue repair as well as physical principles of dosimetry and application of magnetic fields are discussed. An analysis of magnetic/electromagnetic stimulation is followed by a discussion of the advantage of magnetic field stimulation compared with electric current stimulation. Finally, the proposed mechanisms of action are discussed.

RESUMO

The authors propose a method of anti-recurrence treatment of polypous rhinosinusitides which implies drop introduction and alternating of antihistamine and antikinin drugs. The results of the treatment show that the number of recurrences reduces, remission duration increases.
