RESUMO

The study investigated psychosocial factors as predictors of aggressive behaviors among primary school learners in Ekiti State, Nigeria. The study used a survey research design. All public primary school learners in Ekiti State formed the target population. A sample size of one thousand three hundred and fifty (1350) respondents was selected using a multistage sampling procedure, consisting of 641 males (47.5%) and 709 females (52.5%), ages 9-13 years, who participated in the study. A self-report instrument tagged "Learners' Aggressive Behaviours Questionnaire" (α indexes of .81, .70, .77, and .84 for the four components respectively) was used for data collection. The data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis at a 5% level of significance. The empirical findings revealed that parenting styles, peer influence, and self-control significantly predicted learners' aggressive behavior. Recommendations for curbing aggressive behavior among learners were highlighted.

RESUMO

It is estimated that up to 1% of the general population has a congenital bleeding disorder. With this level of disease burden, it is more likely than not that any practising surgeon or anaesthetist will, at one time or another, have occasion to manage one such patient. Congenital haemophilia, both A and B, von Willebrand's disease, and inherited qualitative platelet defects, constitute the bulk of these disorders, with the rest distributed between much rarer conditions. Although looking after such patients will continue to pose a challenge to anaesthetists, recent and continuing advances in haemostatic products, coupled with increasing awareness of haemostatic care, means that surgery in this challenging group of patients is safer now than ever before, and can now be undertaken with a degree of confidence not possible even two decades ago. Central to these recent successes has been the continuing evolution of specialised healthcare services; in particular, Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centres. Of equal importance, at least in developed countries, has been the ease of access to highly purified, safe and effective haemostatic products. The key to successful surgical management of the patient with a bleeding disorder is a multidisciplinary approach involving not only surgeons, anaesthetists and haematologists, but also laboratory scientists, specialist physiotherapists and haemophilia nurses. With careful planning, most surgical and invasive procedures can be carried out safely in persons with haemophilia and other bleeding disorders.

RESUMO

The use of raw sludge spread on land as conditioner and fertilizer has been practised over the years in urban agriculture. However, this raw sludge (biosolids) is associated with a potential health risk as a result of the pathogenic microorganisms it contains. The study considered the dewatering of faecal sludge (FS) mixed with sawdust to produce biosolids that can be applied as manure for agricultural use. It assessed the bacterial and helminth egg qualities of the biosolids produced from FS-sawdust mixture. Bench-scale unplanted filter beds were used for dewatering of FS mixed with different percentages of sawdust. The sludge consisted of public toilet sludge and septage in the ratio of 1:3. An analysis of variance of the completely randomized design was undertaken and a P-value below 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The sawdust-FS mixture analysed after complete dewatering showed significant reduction in microbial (bacteria) content (P < 0.05) and helminth eggs, making the biosolids produced safe for farmers and the environment. The bulking agent improved the quality of the biosolids, with greatest pathogen removal observed in the 150% sawdust, whilst the least reduction was recorded in the 0% sawdust (control).

RESUMO

This work involves theoretical and numerical analysis of the thermal quasi-geostrophic (TQG) model of submesoscale geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD). Physically, the TQG model involves thermal geostrophic balance, in which the Rossby number, the Froude number and the stratification parameter are all of the same asymptotic order. The main analytical contribution of this paper is to construct local-in-time unique strong solutions for the TQG model. For this, we show that solutions of its regularised version α-TQG converge to solutions of TQG as its smoothing parameter α→0 and we obtain blow-up criteria for the α-TQG model. The main contribution of the computational analysis is to verify the rate of convergence of α-TQG solutions to TQG solutions as α→0, for example, simulations in appropriate GFD regimes.

RESUMO

The use of Caridina nilotica whole-body acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity as a potential biomarker of Roundup(®) pollution of aquatic ecosystems was investigated. Forty days post hatch (dph) shrimps were exposed to different concentrations of 0.0, 4.3, 6.7, 10.5, 16.4, 25.6 and 40.0 mg/L in a 96 h acute toxicity test; and 0.0, 2.2, 2.8, 3.4, 4.3 and 5.4 mg/L in a 21 d chronic toxicity test. Whole-body AChE activities were determined at the end of the exposure periods by spectrophotometric assay of sample extract; activities were then normalized against protein contents in the samples and expressed in nanomoles of substrate hydrolyzed. Results of both tests showed that AChE activity was concentration-dependent. Mean AChE activities and standard deviations (±SD) for 96 h acute toxicity were 3.6239 (± 0.4185), 3.4157 (± 1.1842), 2.537 (± 1.3989), 2.4253 (± 1.4202), 2.4127 (± 1.9097), 2.0017 (± 1.1080) and 2.316 (± 0.4001) nmol/min/mg protein; while activity levels for 21 d test were 3.6907(± 0.3401), 2.8473 (± 0.713), 2.9134 (± 0.9879), 2.6738 (± 0.7117), 2.3019 (± 0.4464) and 2.1478 (± 0.864) nmol/min/mg protein. Reference basal AChE activity for 40 dph C. nilotica based on the two control groups was estimated as 3.6907 (± 0.3401) nmol/min/mg proteins. The present work provides ecotoxicological basis for the possible use of AChE activity in C. nilotica as a biomarker for monitoring Roundup(®) pollution in freshwater systems.

RESUMO

Glyphosate-based herbicides used to control weeds and invading alien plant species in South Africa ultimately end up in freshwater ecosystems, but no South African environmental water quality guideline exists to regulate these bio-active chemicals. Ecotoxicological tests to assess the possibility of using lipid peroxidation (LPx) in Caridina nilotica as a potential biomarker of Roundup(®), a glyphosate-based herbicide, pollution were conducted. In two separate tests, 40 days post hatch shrimps were exposed to different concentrations of 4.3, 6.7, 10.5, 16.4, 25.6 and 40.0 mg/L in a 96 h acute toxicity test; and 2.2, 2.8, 3.4, 4.3 and 5.4 mg/L in a 21 d chronic toxicity test, using static-non renewal and static-renewal methods, respectively. Shrimp whole body LPx was estimated by thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS) assay, performed by a malondialdehyde (MDA) reaction with 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA) measured spectrophotometrically. Final MDA concentrations were expressed as nmol MDA produced/mg protein. Results showed that LPx was significantly lower in control animals than in animals exposed to different Roundup(®) concentrations, (p < 0.05). The present work provides an ecotoxicological basis for the possible use of LPx in Caridina nilotica as a biomarker for monitoring Roundup(®) pollution in freshwater ecosystems.

RESUMO

Choline acetyltransferase and [3H]choline uptake have been measured in neocortical regions and hippocampus one week after lesions which destroyed the septum bilaterally, and after unilateral lesions in the area of nucleus basalis magnocellularis. Lesions of the septal area, which severely decreased choline acetyltransferase in hippocampus, only moderately decreased choline acetyltransferase in a posterior cortical region and had no effect in frontal and parietal regions. In contrast, lesions which included nucleus basalis magnocellularis decreased choline acetyltransferase markedly in frontal and parietal regions and had less of an effect in the posterior cortical regions. Lesion-induced decreases of [3H]choline uptake paralleled those of choline acetyltransferase. Lesion which included nucleus basalis magnocellularis had no effect on choline acetyltransferase in hippocampus, nucleus accumbens, olfactory tubercle, midbrain or pons-medulla. These results suggest that existence of topographically distinct cholinergic inputs to neocortex. In agreement with previous studies, cholinergic projections from the peripallidal region of nucleus basalis magnocellularis are predominantly to frontal and parietal neocortex. In contrast to previous suggestions, cholinergic projections to neocortex from the septal area are limited to the posterior regions of neocortex.

RESUMO

We analysed the treatment outcome of primary refractory HD patients managed with high-dose chemotherapy and haematopoietic cell transplantation. Data of 65 adult patients who underwent HDC/ASCT in nine Polish centres for primary resistant Hodgkin's disease between June 1991 and July 2000 were collected retrospectively. Response rate to HDC/ASC: CR, 54%; PR, 20%; less than PR, 15%; early deaths, 11%. Actuarial 3-year OS and PFS were 55% and 36%, respectively. In multivariate analysis, lack of bulky lymph nodes and use of immunotherapy were favourable factors for both OS and PFS. IPF <3 at the time of transplantation was predictive for PFS. However, the prognostic impact of immunotherapy should be interpreted with caution since this group included more patients who achieved CR after HDC/ASCT. The results of HDC/ASCT are encouraging and confirm earlier findings. The role of immunotherapy should be further investigated in prospective trials.

RESUMO

From paraffin-embedded brains of adult mice, ten-micron sections were taken through the entire-extent of the caudate nucleus. Coronal, horizontal or sagittal sections stained with cresyl violet were used to examine two aspects of the internal organization of the nucleus: regional variation and cell clustering. A core of large cells located centrally in the head of the nucleus and ventrally in the body was described. This core is bounded by zones containing medium cells. Slightly larger medium cells occur laterally in the head of the nucleus than elsewhere. Based on these results, three zones have been described in the head of the nucleus: a lateral periphery, a central core area and a medial periphery. The dorsal area of the body of the nucleus probably corresponds most nearly to the lateral periphery, and the ventral area to the central core. Cell clustering is dominant pattern of organization within each zone. Only one large cell was seen per clumped cell grouping, and this cell could occupy either a peripheral or central position in the cluster. Medium cells participated in the clumped arrangement of cells, and also formed rings around fibers of the internal capsule.

RESUMO

Horseradish peroxidase histochemistry was used to determine the course and extent of neuronal projections from the pontine taste area (PTA) to the gustatory neocortex (GN) in rat. Two distinct findings were encountered: (1) thalamocortical projections from posterior ventromedial thalamus to GN were confirmed, and (2) direct projections from cells located in the PTA to the GN were described. This novel anatomical finding supports previous suggestions that some gustatory information may be relayed to forebrain areas without making synaptic connection in the diencephalon.

RESUMO

Fermented and non-fermented Ghanaian maize dough was seeded with approximately 10(7) colony forming units of 4 strains of Shigella flexneri which had been isolated from patients with dysentery. In the non-fermented maize dough (pH 6.2) the shigellae were detectable in large numbers for up to 24 h after exposure. In the maize dough that had been fermented for 3 d (pH 3.2) 3 strains were detectable in small numbers for up to 6 h after inoculation. Thereafter none was isolated. The fourth strain, though detectable for up to 24 h after inoculation, had its numbers reduced considerably. This suggests that traditional methods of food preparation using fermentation have important anti-diarrhoeal functions and the current decline in popularity of such food technologies in certain developing countries may increase the risk of childhood diarrhoea.

RESUMO

This study on the microbiology of chicken assessed a total of 97 live birds from three selected farms and 87 carcasses/chicken parts from two supermarkets, two open markets and one wholesale outlet (cold store) in the Accra metropolis. Campylobacter spp. were isolated from 14 (14.4%) gut contents of live birds from three farms. None of the frozen birds were positive for Campylobacter spp. These isolates were sensitive to most common antibiotics but not to ampicillin and tetracyclines. Salmonella spp. were isolated from 7 (7.2%) gut contents and 13 (6.8%) carcasses and were resistant to erythromycin. cefotiam, penicillin, ampicillin and cefadroxil. Samonella spp. had varied susceptibilities to nalidixic acid, chloramphenicol and minocyclin. No Shigella spp. was isolated from any of the live birds but 6 (6.9%) of imported chicken samples from the cold store and two markets were positive. Fosfomycin and chloramphenicol were the only antibiotics effective against these isolates. Twelve different Escherichia coli serovars were identified from the total of 21 positive samples. These, in order of magnitude isolated, are E. coli 0158 (14.3%), 0125 (14.3%), 025 (9.5%), 028ac (9.5%), 0159 (9.5%). 015 (9.5%), 0126 (9.5%), 063 (4.8%), 0143 (4.8%), 026 (4.8%), 078 (4.8%), 0164 (4.8%). Cefadroxil, ampicillin, penicillin, cefotiam, tetracycline and erythromycin were ineffective against all strains of E. coli isolated. Minocyclin was effective against all strains with the exception of E. coli 0159, 025, 0164 and 063, which were moderately susceptible. All strains with exception of E. coli 0164 were susceptible to fosfomycin. Nalidixic acid, chloramphenicol, kanamaycin, ceftrioxone and amoxycillin all showed varied effectiveness against the strains isolated. It is concluded that imported and locally produced chicken is a potential source of multiple-antibiotic-resistant enteropathogenic bacteria. Measures to improve the microbial quality of chicken are discussed.

RESUMO

In this study, electron microscopy was used to study cell clustering in the postnatal mouse striatum. From the date of birth (PO) through postnatal day 7 (P7), groupings of eight to ten striatal neurons were delimited easily in low magnification electron micrographs. Often, within individual groupings, adjacent neurons were separated only by a thin, 10 nm gap, and formed cell pairs or cell triads. Coincident with marked expansion of the striatal neuropil in the second postnatal week, striatal neurons formed more dispersed cell clusters consisting only occasionally of cell pairs or triads. Single, pyknotic neuronal nuclei were seen in clusters of normal neurons exhibiting different stages of maturation but were absent from clusters consisting only of well-differentiated neurons. The neuropil surrounding cell clusters with pyknotic neurons or that adjacent to neighboring cell clusters often contained degenerating dendrites and axon terminals. Whereas this naturally occurring neuronal cell death was present in the tissue throughout the first postnatal week, only degenerating dendritic and axonal profiles were seen in the P15 striatum. This latter fact suggests that the occurrence of pyknotic neuronal somata does not account entirely for the more localized degeneration of other neuronal profiles and raises the possibility that other degenerative processes may be occurring simultaneously in the tissue.

RESUMO

Hodgkin Disease has a relatively good prognosis and high curability due to the effectiveness of risk adapted treatment. Protocol currently used at the Department of Haematology in Cracow is based on randomised multicentre clinical trials, summarised in this paper. Proper choice of the first line treatment is most important for overall survival--no salvage therapy for resistant or recurrent disease is equally effective. High dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell support should be considered in certain clinical situations, as partial response or relapse after conventional treatment.

RESUMO

Autological transplantation of bone marrow as well as hematopoietic and precursor cells obtained from peripheral blood with the use of cell apheresis is a therapy applied in the treatment of hematological diseases and solid tumours. The mobilization of hematopoietic cells is performed by applying cytostatic drugs and/or recombinant growth factors (G-CSF, GM-CSF). The collection of CD 34+ cells is performed by using cell separators. An important role in the transplantation procedure is played by purging techniques of transplantation material from residual neoplastic cells (negative selection) or isolation of hematopoietic cells (positive selection). The considerable progress in this field is connected with the implementation of Immunoadsorbtive or magnetic methods as well as those of molecular biology. The improvement of the procedure of hematopoietic cells transplantation and its efficacy is caused by the stimulation of the hematopoiesis by using the combination of cytokines (G-CSF, GM-CSF, IL-3, SCF) and purging of the hematopoietic cells obtained from the cellular apheresis.
