RESUMO

Study of different parameters of cord blood usually reflects neonatal health status. One of the widely used system for assessing neonatal health is APGAR score. It is assed at 1 and 5 min from baby's birth. Immediate medical care may improve 5 min score of neonate who showed poor score at 1 min. The main objective of this study is to establish whether any correlation exists between complete hemogram and iron profile with APGAR score and gravid of mother. Cord blood was collected from 96 new born, delivered vaginally, mothers having no chronic medical disease. Different parameters of complete hemogram were assessed along with iron profile and statistical analysis was done by Graph pad Instat3 soft ware. Statistically significant correlation exists between APGAR score (5 min) and MCV (p = 0.005), MCHC (p = 0.016), nRBC (p = 0.002), platelet count (p = 0.001), RDW (p = 0.001). Statistically weak correlation exists between TLC (p = 0.08). Comparing complete blood count with gravid of mother by unpaired t test significant correlation was obtained for HCT (p = 0.035) and RDW (p = 0.03). Apgar score and complete hemogram from cord blood are both non-invasive procedure which help us to asses fetal wellbeing as well as requirement of immediate management. Further more studies are essential to establish the relationship.

RESUMO

Ecthyma gangrenosum (EG) is a cutaneous lesion classically associated with potentially fatal Pseudomonas septicemia in immunocompromised patients. Other bacterial and fungal pathogens have also been implicated. Although EG typically occurs in immunocompromised or neutropenic patients, it may occasionally affect a previously healthy person. The cutaneous findings are characteristic with small indurated papulovesicles progressing rapidly to necrotic ulcers with surrounding erythema and a central black Eschar. While lesions can occur at any site, most are commonly found over the buttocks, perineum, limbs, and axillae. We describe a case of EG in periorbital region in a previously healthy woman who responded to appropriate antibiotic treatment for Pseudomonas. It is very important to establish the diagnosis early so that appropriate systemic antibiotic therapy can be initiated to reduce morbidity and potential mortality.

RESUMO

Lipid synthesis is an important process in most organisms as well as in helminths. The present observation shows the variation of lipid and fatty acid uptake among cestode, Raillietina (Fuhrmannetta) echinobothrida; nematode, Ascaridia galli and their host, Gallus domesticus, the common country fowl. Total lipid (TL), neutral lipid (NL), glycolipid (GL), phospholipid (PL) and their fatty acid of cestode, nematode and liver and intestinal fluid of the host were analyzed by thin layer chromatography and gas liquid chromatography respectively. The result shows that liver take more TL, PL and GL except NL. Utilization of lipid from intestinal fluid when compare between the parasites, it is found that TL and PL content of cestode are higher than nematode, whereas, nematode absorbs more NL and GL than cestode. The percent of cholesterol is more in cestode than nematode. Palmitic, stearic, oleic and linoleic are the predominant fatty acids among all the samples. The present study reveals that the cestode having large surface area is more opportunistic in the resource utilization over the nematode as well as the host.
