RESUMO

Thermokarst lakes are potentially important sources of methane (CH4 ) and carbon dioxide (CO2 ). However, considerable uncertainty exists regarding carbon emissions from thermokarst lakes owing to a limited understanding of their patterns and motivators. In this study, we measured CH4 and CO2 diffusive fluxes in 163 thermokarst lakes in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) over 3 years from May to October. The median carbon emissions from the QTP thermokarst lakes were 1440 mg CO2 m-2 day-1 and 60 mg CH4 m-2 day-1 , respectively. The diffusive rates of CO2 and CH4 are related to the catchment land cover type. Sediment microbial abundance and hydrochemistry explain 51.9% and 38.3% of the total variance in CH4 diffusive emissions, respectively, while CO2 emissions show no significant relationship with environmental factors. When upscaling carbon emissions from the QTP thermokarst lakes, the annual average CH4 release per lake area is equal to that of the pan-Arctic region. Our findings highlight the importance of incorporating in situ observation data with different emission pathways for different land cover types in predicting carbon emissions from thermokarst lakes in the future.

RESUMO

Thaw slumps can lead to considerable carbon loss in permafrost regions, while the loss of components from two major origins, i.e., microbial and plant-derived carbon, during this process remains poorly understood. Here, we provide direct evidence that microbial necromass carbon is a major component of lost carbon in a retrogressive permafrost thaw slump by analyzing soil organic carbon (SOC), biomarkers (amino sugars and lignin phenols), and soil environmental variables in a typical permafrost thaw slump in the Tibetan Plateau. The retrogressive thaw slump led to a ∼61% decrease in SOC and a ∼25% SOC stock loss. As evident in the levels of amino sugars (average of 55.92 ± 18.79 mg g-1 of organic carbon, OC) and lignin phenols (average of 15.00 ± 8.05 mg g-1 OC), microbial-derived carbon (microbial necromass carbon) was the major component of the SOC loss, accounting for ∼54% of the SOC loss in the permafrost thaw slump. The variation of amino sugars was mainly related to the changes in soil moisture, pH, and plant input, while changes in lignin phenols were mainly related to the changes in soil moisture and soil bulk density.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Permafrost degradation may develop thermokarst landforms, which substantially change physico-chemical characteristics in the soil as well as the soil carbon stock. However, little is known about changes of bacterial community among the microfeatures within thermokarst area. RESULTS: We investigated bacterial communities using the Illumina sequencing method and examined their relationships with soil parameters in a thermokarst feature on the northern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. We categorized the ground surface into three different micro-relief patches based on the type and extent of permafrost collapse (control, collapsing and subsided areas). Permafrost collapse significantly decreased the soil carbon density and moisture content in the upper 10 cm samples in the collapsing areas. The highest loading factors for the first principal component (PC) extracted from the soil parameters were soil carbon and nitrogen contents, while soil moisture content and C:N ratios were the highest loading factors for the second PC. The relative abundance of Acidobacteria decreased with depth. Bacterial diversity in subsided areas was higher than that in control areas. CONCLUSIONS: Bacterial community structure was significantly affected by pH and depth. The relative abundance of Gemmatimonadetes and Firmicutes were significantly correlated with the first and second PCs extracted from multiple soil parameters, suggesting these phyla could be used as indicators for the soil parameters in the thermokarst terrain.

RESUMO

Soil thermal and hydraulic regimes are critical factors influencing terrestrial processes in cold regions. Collection of field data from frozen ground has occurred at point scales, but limited data exist that characterize changes of soil thermal and hydraulic regimes at the scale of the whole Heihe River Basin. This study uses a long-term regional climate model coupled with land surface model to investigate the soil thermal and hydraulic regime changes at a large spatial scale. It also explores potential factors, including the climate and non-climate factors. Results show that there is significant variability in mean annual air temperature (MAAT) of about 0.47 °C/decade during 1980-2013. A time series of area-averaged mean annual soil temperature (MAST) over the whole Heihe River Basin shows a significant increase between 0.25 and 0.36 °C/decade during 1984-2013, with a net change of 0.9 °C. A trend of increasing wetness is found in soil moisture. Frozen days (FD) decreased significantly both in seasonally frozen ground (SFG) regions and permafrost regions, with a net change between 7 and 13 days during 1984-2013. Freezing index (FI) had a positive effect on FD, while thawing index (TI), MAAT, precipitation, and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) had a negative effect. These results are important to understand dynamic mechanisms of soil freeze/thaw cycles.

RESUMO

Climate-sensitive northern cryosphere inland waters emit greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere, yet their total emissions remain poorly constrained. We present a data-driven synthesis of GHG emissions from northern cryosphere inland waters considering water body types, cryosphere zones, and seasonality. We find that annual GHG emissions are dominated by carbon dioxide ([Formula: see text] teragrams of CO2; [Formula: see text]) and methane ([Formula: see text] teragrams of CH4), while the nitrous oxide emission ([Formula: see text] gigagrams of N2O) is minor. The annual CO2-equivalent (CO2e) GHG emissions from northern cryosphere inland waters total [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text] petagrams of CO2e using the 100- or 20-year global warming potentials, respectively. Rivers emit 64% more CO2e GHGs than lakes, despite having only one-fifth of their surface area. The continuous permafrost zone contributed half of the inland water GHG emissions. Annual CO2e emissions from northern cryosphere inland waters exceed the region's terrestrial net ecosystem exchange, highlighting the important role of inland waters in the cryospheric land-aquatic continuum under a warming climate.

RESUMO

Large stocks of soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulated in the Northern Hemisphere permafrost regions may be vulnerable to climatic warming, but global estimates of SOC distribution and magnitude in permafrost regions still have large uncertainties. Based on multiple high-resolution environmental variables and a compiled soil sample dataset (>3000 soil profiles), we used machine-learning methods to estimate the size and spatial distribution of SOC for the top 3 m soils in the Northern Hemisphere permafrost regions. We also identified key environmental predictors of SOC. The results showed that the SOC storage for the top 3 m soil was 1079 ± 174 Pg C across the Northern Hemisphere permafrost regions (20.8 × 106 km2), including 1057 ± 167 Pg C in the northern permafrost regions and 22 ± 7 Pg C in the Third Pole permafrost regions. The mean annual air temperature and NDVI are the main controlling factors for the spatial distribution of SOC stocks in the northern and the Third Pole permafrost regions. Our estimations were more accurate than the existing global SOC stock maps. The results improve our understanding of the regional and global permafrost carbon cycle and their feedback to the climate system.

RESUMO

Permafrost on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) has been degrading in the past decades. While the degradation may mobilize previously protected material from the permafrost profile, little is known about the stocks and stability of mercury (Hg) in the QTP permafrost. Here we measured total soil Hg in 265 samples from 15 permafrost cores ranging from 3 to 18 m depth, and 45 active layer (AL) soil samples from different land cover types on the QTP. Approximately 21.7 Gg of Hg was stored in surficial permafrost (0-3 m), with 16.58 Gg of Hg was stored in the active layer. Results from six permafrost collapse areas showed that much of the thawed Hg is mobile, with decreases in total Hg mass of 17.6-30.9% for the AL (top 30 cm) in comparison with non-thermokarst surfaces. We conclude that the QTP permafrost region has a large mercury pool, and the stored mercury is sensitive to permafrost degradation.

RESUMO

Arctic rivers export a large amount of organic carbon (OC) and mercury (Hg) to Arctic oceans. Because there are only a few direct calculations of OC and Hg exports from these large rivers, very little is known about their response to changes in the active layer in northern permafrost-dominated areas. In this study, multiyear data sets from the Arctic Great Rivers Observatory (ArcticGRO) are used to estimate the export of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), particulate organic carbon (POC), total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) from the six largest rivers (Yenisey, Lena, Ob, Mackenzie, Yukon and Kolyma) draining to the Arctic Ocean. From 2003 to 2017, annual DOC and POC export to the Arctic Ocean was approximately 21612 Gg and 2728 Gg, and the exports of Hg and MeHg to the Arctic Ocean were approximately 20090 kg and 110 kg (0.002% of the total Hg stored in the northern hemisphere active layer). There were great variations in seasonal OC and Hg concentrations and chemical characteristics, with higher fluxes in spring and lower fluxes in winter (baseline). DOC and Hg concentrations are significantly positively correlated to discharge, as discharge continues to increase in response to a deepening active layer thickness during recent past decades. This study shows that previous results likely underestimated DOC exports from rivers in the circum-Arctic regions, and both OC and Hg exports will increase under predicted climate warming scenarios.

RESUMO

The concentration of gas has been confirmed as a key factor dominating hydrate nucleation. In this study, CO2 hydrates were formed in pure water and a sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) solution using a temperature reduction method under constant pressure at different temperatures. The dissolving properties of CO2 throughout the whole induction period were investigated in detail. The experimental results showed that the 'memory effect' of hydrate might not be attributed to residual water structures after hydrate dissociation. Instead, residual gas molecules in the aqueous phase should receive more attention. Hydrate nucleation was confirmed to be a type of chain reaction. Low temperature was a significant factor that promoted hydrate nucleation. As a result, these two factors enhanced the stochastic features of the CO2 hydrate nucleation reaction. Even under the same conditions, critical gas concentrations beyond the threshold that hydrates can spontaneously nucleate were not fixed, but they still exhibited linear relations regarding a set temperature. Taking the significant influences of temperature into account, a new nucleation mechanism for CO2 hydrates was established based on the potential of the reaction system. Therefore, this study sheds new light when explaining the reason for the formation of gas hydrates in natural reservoirs.

RESUMO

Deep carbon pool in permafrost regions is an important component of the global terrestrial carbon cycle. However, the greenhouse gas production from deep permafrost soils is not well understood. Here, using soils collected from 5-m deep permafrost cores from meadow and wet meadow on the northern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP), we investigated the effects of temperature on CO2 and N2O production under aerobic incubations and CH4 production under anaerobic incubations. After a 35-day incubation, the CO2, N2O and CH4 production at -2 °C to 10 °C were 0.44~2.12 mg C-CO2/g soil C, 0.0027~0.097 mg N-N2O/g soil N, and 0.14~5.88 µg C-CH4/g soil C, respectively. Greenhouse gas production in deep permafrost is related to the C:N ratio and stable isotopes of soil organic carbon (SOC), whereas depth plays a less important role. The temperature sensitivity (Q10) values of the CO2, N2O and CH4 production were 1.67-4.15, 3.26-5.60 and 5.22-10.85, without significant differences among different depths. These results indicated that climate warming likely has similar effects on gas production in deep permafrost and surface soils. Our results suggest that greenhouse gas emissions from both the deep permafrost and surface soils to the air will increase under future climate change.

RESUMO

During gas hydrate formation process, a phase transition of liquid water exists naturally, implying that temperature has an important influence on hydrate formation. In this study, methane hydrate was formed within the same media. The experimental system was kept at 1.45, 6.49, and 12.91 °C respectively, and then different pressurization modes were applied in steps. We proposed a new indicator, namely the slope of the gas flow rates against time (dν g /dt), to represent the intrinsic driving force for hydrate formation. The driving force was calculated as a fixed value at the different stages of formation, including initial nucleation/growth, secondary nucleation/growth, and decay. The amounts of gas consumed at each stage were also calculated. The results show that the driving force during each stage follows an inverse relation with temperature, whereas the amount of consumed gas is proportional to temperature. This opposite trend indicates that the influences of temperature on the specific formation processes and final amounts of gas contained in hydrate should be considered separately. Our results also suggest that the specific ambient temperature under which hydrate is formed should be taken into consideration, when explaining the formation of different configurations and saturations of gas hydrates in natural reservoirs.

RESUMO

Carbonyl compounds including their concentrations, potential sources, diurnal variations and personal exposure were investigated in six subway stations and in-subway trains in Shanghai in June 2008. The carbonyls were collected onto solid sorbent (Tenax TA) coated with pentafluorophenyl hydrazine (PFPH), followed by solvent extraction and gas chromatography (GC)/mass spectrometry (MS) analysis of the PFPH derivatives. The total carbonyl concentrations of in-subway train were about 1.4-2.5 times lower than in-subway stations. A significant correlation (R>0.5, p<0.01) between the concentrations of the low molecular-weight carbonyl compounds (
