INTRODUCTION: Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) predominantly occurs in the subcutaneous and dermal regions and rarely originates from the sinonasal mucosa. CASE PRESENTATION: We report on the case of a 58-year-old male patient who presented with progressive bilateral nasal obstruction, left-sided epiphora, and intermittent epistaxis. Computed tomography revealed a soft tissue opacity in the left maxillary sinus with intersinusoidal nasal wall demineralization, extending into the surrounding ethmoid cells and the right nasal cavity through a contralateral deviation of the nasal septum. Contrast-enhanced T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging further confirmed these findings. The IPEH originating from the maxillary sinus extended into the contralateral nasal cavity, and it was successfully removed using an endoscopic endonasal approach, avoiding overly aggressive treatment. CONCLUSION: This case report highlights the diagnostic challenges of IPEH in the sinonasal region and the importance of considering IPEH as a differential diagnosis in patients presenting with nasal obstruction, epiphora, and intermittent epistaxis.

Accidentally extruded root canal filler within the sinuses may induce maxillary sinusitis with fungal mass. The authors describe 2 cases of gutta-percha-induced fungal masses in the left maxillary sinus of 2 women. The lesions were evaluated preoperatively using both computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, providing comprehensive insights into the condition. In one patient, the lesion was located such that it could be resected through the middle meatal antrostomy alone. However, the second patient presented with an anteroinferiorly situated lesion that necessitated not only a transnasal approach but also an endoscopic modified medial maxillectomy. Both patients recovered uneventfully after surgery. This case series is the first published report of 2 cases of gutta-percha-induced maxillary sinus fungal masses, with their imaging findings, successfully treated through different routes through transnasal endoscopic surgery. These reports highlight the need for a collaborative approach between dental practitioners and otolaryngologists. In addition to the patient's wishes, surgical interventions must consider the unique characteristics of each case and the potential for collaboration across different medical specialties.

BACKGROUND: Adzuki beans (ABs; Vigna angularis) were reported to show potential for prevention of cholesterol absorption and lowering of the blood cholesterol level. However, the main active compounds and some cellular effects remain unknown. In this study, we evaluated the potential cholesterol-lowering effects of (+)-catechin 7-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside (C7G) and (+)-epicatechin 7-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside (E7G), identified as abundant polyphenols in ABs. METHODS AND RESULTS: To investigate the cholesterol-lowering activity in vitro, cholesterol micelles, bile acids, and Caco-2 cells as an intestinal model were used in the study. C7G and E7G each inhibited micellar solubility in a dose-dependent manner, and their inhibitory activity was as strong as that of (+)-catechin (IC50 values: C7G, 0.23 ± 0.03 mg/ml; E7G, 0.22 ± 0.02 mg/ml; (+)-catechin, 0.26 ± 0.11 mg/ml). The AB polyphenols showed binding activity toward bile acids and changed them into an insoluble form. When Caco-2 cells were treated with C7G or E7G, the amount of incorporated cholesterol was significantly decreased compared with vehicle-treated control cells, and no cytotoxicity was observed under the experimental conditions used. Meanwhile, quantitative real-time PCR revealed that the mRNA level of the cholesterol transporter NPC1L1 remained unchanged in the treated cells. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, the present findings suggest that C7G and E7G are the main active compounds in ABs, and have the ability to inhibit micellar solubility, bind to bile acids, and suppress cholesterol absorption. The present study supports the health benefits of ABs as a medicinal food and the application of AB polyphenols as medicinal supplements to suppress cholesterol elevation.

PURPOSE: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and nasal obstruction causes decreased adherence to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). The purpose is to evaluate the effects of antiallergic agents on CPAP adherence and sleep quality. METHODS: A longitudinal study was made of patients who use CPAP for OSA and treated with antiallergy agents for spring pollinosis. We compared the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), nasal symptoms scores (NSS), and data from CPAP before and after treatment. Then, we classified the subjects into two groups based on the baseline PSQI score: one group without a decreased sleep quality (PSQI < 6) and the other group with decreased sleep quality (PSQI ≥ 6). RESULTS: Of 28 subjects enrolled, 13 had good sleep quality and 15 had poor sleep quality. PSQI showed significant improvements after medication (p = 0.046). ESS showed no significant differences after AR medication (p = 0.565). Significant improvement was observed after the prescription of antiallergy agents in all items of NSS (sneezing, p < 0.05; rhinorrhea, p < 0.01; nasal obstruction, p < 0.01; QOL, p < 0.01). The percentage of days with CPAP use more than 4 h increased significantly after the administration of rhinitis medication (p = 0.022). In the intragroup comparisons of PSQI ≥ 6 group, PSQI decreased significantly (p < 0.05). For the NSS in intragroup comparisons of PSQI ≥ 6 group, all parameters showed significant improvement (sneezing, p = 0.016; rhinorrhea, p = 0.005; nasal obstruction, p < 0.005; QOL, p < 0.005). CONCLUSION: The use of antiallergy agents can improve CPAP adherence and sleep quality in patients with OSA on CPAP.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to elucidate the association between cranial base (Bjork-Jarabak analysis), midsagittal cross-sectional area of the airway in the pharyngeal region (MCSA-PR) data and pharyngeal-airway volume (PAV) and develop a model that could help clinicians predict PAV using two-dimensional (2D) data (Bjork polygon and MCSA-PR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pre-treatment lateral cephalometric radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of 82 women were categorized into three anteroposterior skeletal groups based on ANB angle: Class I (n = 29), 1.5° ≤ ANB≤5.1°; Class II (n = 26), ANB >5.1°; Class III (n = 27), ANB <1.5°. The Bjork polygon, MCSA-PR data from cephalograms and PAV data from MRI scans were examined. Intergroup comparisons were performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), with pairwise comparisons conducted using the Bonferroni-corrected Mann-Whitney U-test for the Kruskal-Wallis test and Bonferroni-corrected multiple comparison test for one-way ANOVA. Forward multiple linear regression was used to create model equations for predicting PAV. RESULTS: MCSA-PR and anterior (N-S) and posterior (S-Ar) cranial-base lengths were positively correlated with the PAV. We developed four models; three operated at the group level, and one encompassed the entire sample. Notably, all models could effectively explain the variance in the PAV data. The model for the Class I group was the strongest (adjusted R2 = 0.77). CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate the remarkable potential of the MCSA-PR, N-S and Bjork sum angles (BSA) as predictors of the PAV and the relevance of 2D cephalometric and cranial-base parameters in predicting the three-dimensional (3D) pharyngeal-airway size.

BACKGROUND: Dry eye (DE) and hay fever (HF) show synergistic exacerbation of each other's pathology through inflammatory pathways. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association between DE and HF comorbidity and the related risk factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted using crowdsourced multidimensional data from individuals who downloaded the AllerSearch smartphone app in Japan between February 2018 and May 2020. AllerSearch collected the demographics, medical history, lifestyle and residential information, HF status, DE symptoms, and HF-related quality of life. HF symptoms were evaluated using the nasal symptom score (0-15 points) and nonnasal symptom score (0-12 points). HF was defined by the participants' responses to the questionnaire as HF, non-HF, or unknown. Symptomatic DE was defined as an Ocular Surface Disease Index total score (0-100 points), with a threshold score of 13 points. HF-related quality of life was assessed using the Japanese Allergic Conjunctival Disease Standard Quality of Life Questionnaire (0-68 points). We conducted a multivariable linear regression analysis to examine the association between the severity of DE and HF symptoms. We subsequently conducted a multivariable logistic regression analysis to identify the factors associated with symptomatic DE (vs nonsymptomatic DE) among individuals with HF. Dimension reduction via Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection stratified the comorbid DE and HF symptoms. The symptom profiles in each cluster were identified using hierarchical heat maps. RESULTS: This study included 11,284 participants, classified into experiencing HF (9041 participants), non-HF (720 participants), and unknown (1523 participants) groups. The prevalence of symptomatic DE among individuals with HF was 49.99% (4429/9041). Severe DE symptoms were significantly associated with severe HF symptoms: coefficient 1.33 (95% CI 1.10-1.57; P<.001) for mild DE, coefficient 2.16 (95% CI 1.84-2.48; P<.001) for moderate DE, and coefficient 3.80 (95% CI 3.50-4.11; P<.001) for severe DE. The risk factors for comorbid symptomatic DE among individuals with HF were identified as female sex; lower BMI; medicated hypertension; history of hematologic, collagen, heart, liver, respiratory, or atopic disease; tomato allergy; current and previous mental illness; pet ownership; living room and bedrooms furnished with materials other than hardwood, carpet, tatami, and vinyl; discontinuation of contact lens use during the HF season; current contact lens use; smoking habits; and sleep duration of <6 hours per day. Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection stratified the heterogeneous comorbid DE and HF symptoms into 14 clusters. In the hierarchical heat map, cluster 9 was comorbid with the most severe HF and DE symptoms, and cluster 1 showed severe HF symptoms with minimal DE-related symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: This crowdsourced study suggested a significant association between severe DE and HF symptoms. Detecting DE among individuals with HF could allow effective prevention and interventions through concurrent treatment for ocular surface management along with HF treatment.

Lobular capillary hemangiomas (LCH), which usually originate in the skin and mucous membranes of the oral cavity, are uncommon from the posterior portion of the inferior turbinate. Although the exact cause of LCH in the nasal cavity has not been elucidated, trauma, caused by factors such as intranasal packing and habitual nose-picking, has been reported as one of the causes. In addition, 2 cases of LCH caused by submucosal resection with powered instrumentation to the inferior turbinate have been reported, suggesting that various types of traumas to the nasal mucosa can cause LCH. The authors report the first case of LCH formation in the posterior portion of the inferior turbinate after cauterization with silver nitrate.

BACKGROUND: Multidisciplinary efforts to prospectively collect and analyze symptoms of hay fever are limited. We aimed to identify the characteristics of nasal and ocular symptoms of hay fever, using the AllerSearch smartphone application. METHODS: This mobile health-based prospective observational study using the AllerSearch smartphone application was conducted between February 1, 2018, and May 1, 2020. Individuals who downloaded AllerSearch from Japan and provided comprehensive self-assessments (including 17 items related to quality of life [QoL]-related items) were included. The characteristics and risk factors for allergic rhinitis (AR) and allergic conjunctivitis (AC) were identified using hierarchical heat maps and multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: Of the 9041 participants with hay fever, 58.8% had AR and AC, 22.2% had AR, and 5.7% had AC. The AR-AC comorbid cohort showed worse symptoms of hay fever and QoL scores than the other cohorts. Factors (odds ratio, 95% confidence interval) associated with AR-AC included a lower age (0.98, 0.97-0.98), female sex (1.31, 1.19-1.45), liver disease (1.58, 1.26-2.35), dry eye disease (1.45, 1.30-1.63), unknown dry eye disease status (1.46, 1.31-1.62), contact lens use discontinuation during the hay fever season (1.69, 1.28-2.23), and bedroom flooring material other than hardwood, carpet, tatami, or vinyl (1.91, 1.16-3.14). CONCLUSIONS: Analysis of medical big data for hay fever performed using a mobile health app helped identify risk factors and characteristics of AC, AR, and AR-AC. Phenotyping of highly variable symptoms of hay fever, such as nasal and ocular symptoms, can facilitate better-quality clinical care.

Many laboratory experiments on aquatic vertebrates that inhabit closed water or coastal areas have highlighted negative effects of fast growth on swimming performance. Nonetheless, field studies on pelagic fishes have provided evidence of survival advantages of faster-growing individuals. To reconcile this contradiction, we examined the relationship between growth rate and swimming performance as a continuous function for juveniles of chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) using 3D tracking analysis. For experiments, 20, 24, 27, and 30 days post-hatch individuals within the size range of 14.5-25.3 mm were used. We found that the growth-swimming (burst speed) relationship in chub mackerel was substantially positive and it was supported by morphological traits such as muscle area, which were also positively related with growth rate. This finding is consistent with field observations showing selective survival of fast-growing individuals of this species, reconciling the current contradiction between laboratory experiments and field observations. A dome-shaped quadratic curve described the relationship between growth rate and burst speed better than a linear or cubic function, suggesting that growth may trade-off with swimming performance, as reported in many previous studies, when it is extremely fast. These results, obtained from the rarely tested offshore species, strongly suggests the importance of experimental verification using animals that inhabit various types of habitats in understanding the principles underlying the evolution of growth-locomotor relationship.

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to investigate the diagnostic indicators of odontogenic sinusitis other than computed tomography (CT) findings and the history of dental treatment such as detected bacteria and symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 87 patients who underwent surgery for unilateral sinusitis between 2016 and 2020 (n = 87). Patients with cysts and fungal sinusitis were excluded from the study. We analyzed the relationship between the presence/absence of CT findings such as periapical lesions and oroantral fistulas; anaerobic bacteria; and symptoms in patients with unilateral sinusitis. RESULTS: There was a significant correlation between the detection of anaerobes and CT findings. Peptostreptococcus sp., Prevotella sp., Streptococcus anginosus group, and Fusobacterium sp. were the most commonly isolated species. Detection of these anaerobic bacteria supports the diagnosis of odontogenic sinusitis. Moreover, ODS often present with symptoms, such as a foul smell and facial pain. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that not only the presence of CT findings such as PAL and OAF, but the detection of anaerobic bacteria, and the presence of any symptoms may aid in the diagnosis of ODS.

Stem cell-based therapies and experimental methods rely on efficient induction of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs). During limb development, the lateral plate mesoderm (LPM) produces limb-bud mesenchymal (LBM) cells that differentiate into osteochondroprogenitor cells and form cartilage tissues in the appendicular skeleton. Previously, we generated PRRX1-tdTomato reporter hPSCs to establish the protocol for inducing the hPSC-derived PRRX1+ LBM-like cells. However, surface antigens that assess the induction efficiency of hPSC-derived PRRX1+ LBM-like cells from LPM have not been identified. Here, we used PRRX1-tdTomato reporter hPSCs and found that high pluripotent cell density suppressed the expression of PRRX1 mRNA and tdTomato after LBM-like induction. RNA sequencing and flow cytometry suggested that PRRX1-tdTomato+ LBM-like cells are defined as CD44high CD140Bhigh CD49f-. Importantly, other hPSC lines, including four human induced pluripotent stem cell lines (414C2, 1383D2, HPS1042, HPS1043) and two human embryonic stem cell lines (SEES4, SEES7), showed the same results. Thus, an appropriate cell density of hPSCs before differentiation is a prerequisite for inducing the CD44high CD140Bhigh CD49f- PRRX1+ LBM-like cells.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of hay fever, a multifactorial allergic disease, is increasing. Identifying individual characteristics and associated factors of hay fever is essential for predictive, preventive, personalized, and participatory (P4) medicine. This study aimed to identify individual characteristics and associated factors of hay fever using an iPhone application AllerSearch. METHODS: This large-scale mobile health-based cross-sectional study was conducted between February 2018 and May 2020. Individuals who downloaded AllerSearch in Japan and provided a comprehensive self-assessment (general characteristics, medical history, lifestyle habits, and hay fever symptoms [score range 0-36]) were included. Associated factors of hay fever (vs. non-hay fever) and severe hay fever symptoms were identified using multivariate logistic and linear regression analyses, respectively. RESULTS: Of the included 11,284 individuals, 9041 had hay fever. Factors associated with hay fever (odds ratio) included age (0.98), female sex (1.33), atopic dermatitis (1.40), history of dry eye diagnosis (1.36), discontinuation of contact lens use during hay fever season (3.34), frequent bowel movements (1.03), and less sleep duration (0.91). The factors associated with severe hay fever symptoms among individuals with hay fever (coefficient) included age (-0.104), female sex (1.329), history of respiratory disease (1.539), history of dry eye diagnosis (0.824), tomato allergy (1.346), discontinuation of contact lens use during hay fever season (1.479), smoking habit (0.614), and having a pet (0.303). CONCLUSIONS: Our large-scale mobile health-based study using AllerSearch elucidated distinct hay fever presentation patterns, characteristics, and factors associated with hay fever. Our study establishes the groundwork for effective individualized interventions for P4 medicine.

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the most common types among lung cancers generally arising from terminal airway and understanding of multistep carcinogenesis is crucial to develop novel therapeutic strategy for LUAD. Here we used human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) to establish iHER2-hiPSCs in which doxycycline induced the expression of the oncoprotein human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)/ERBB2. Lung progenitors that differentiated from iHER2-hiPSCs, which expressed NKX2-1/TTF-1 known as a lung lineage maker, were cocultured with human fetal fibroblast and formed human lung organoids (HLOs) comprising alveolar type 2-like cells. HLOs that overexpressed HER2 transformed to tumor-like structures similar to atypical adenomatous hyperplasia, which is known for lung precancerous lesion and upregulated the activities of oncogenic signaling cascades such as RAS/RAF/MAPK and PI3K/AKT/mTOR. The degree of morphological irregularity and proliferation capacity were significantly higher in HLOs from iHER2-hiPSCs. Moreover, the transcriptome profile of the HLOs shifted from a normal lung tissue-like state to one characteristic of clinical LUAD with HER2 amplification. Our results suggest that hiPSC-derived HLOs may serve as a model to recapitulate the early tumorigenesis of LUAD and would provide new insights into the molecular basis of tumor initiation and progression.

BACKGROUND: The clupeoid fishes are ecologically and commercially important fish species worldwide that exhibit a high level of population fluctuation, accompanied by alteration of reproductive traits. However, knowledge about their reproductive physiology in order to understand mechanisms underlying such population dynamics is limited. The endocrine system along with the brain-pituitary-gonadal (BPG) axis is critical for regulating reproduction. The aims of this study were to provide transcript data and genes related to the BPG axis, and to characterize the expression profiles of ovarian steroidogenesis-related genes in the Japanese sardine (Sardinops melanostictus, Clupeidae). RESULTS: RNA sequencing was performed using the sardine brain, pituitary, and gonad in both sexes. A total of 290,119 contigs were obtained and 115,173 non-redundant ORFs were annotated. The genes differentially expressed between ovary and testis were strongly associated with GO terms related to gamete production. The tissue-specific profile of the abundance of transcripts was characterized for the major regulators in the BPG axis, such as gonadotropin-releasing hormone, gonadotropin, and steroidogenic enzyme. By comparing between ovary and testis, out of eight different 17ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (Hsd17b) genes identified, higher hsd17b7 expression was found in testis, whereas higher expression of hsd17b8, hsd17b10, hsd17b12a, and hsd17b12b was found in ovary. The cDNAs encoding key endocrine factors in the ovarian steroidogenic pathway were cloned, sequenced, and quantitatively assayed. In the pituitary, follicle-stimulating hormone beta peaked during vitellogenesis, while luteinizing hormone beta peaked at the completion of vitellogenesis. In the ovary, follicle-stimulating hormone receptor and luteinizing hormone receptor were upregulated from mid- to late phase of vitellogenesis. Furthermore, three steroidogenic enzyme genes (cyp11a1, cyp17a1, and cyp19a1a) gradually increased their expression during ovarian development, accompanying a rise in serum estradiol-17ß, while 3ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and steroidogenic acute regulatory protein did not change significantly. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of deep RNA sequencing analysis of Japanese sardine, in which many key genes involved in the BPG axis were identified. Expression profiles of ovarian steroidogenesis-related genes provide a molecular basis of the physiological processes underlying ovarian development in the sardine. Our study will be a valuable resource for clarifying the molecular biology of clupeoid fishes.

We assessed the feasibility of transplanting a sheet of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells differentiated from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) in a patient with neovascular age-related macular degeneration. The iPSCs were generated from skin fibroblasts obtained from two patients with advanced neovascular age-related macular degeneration and were differentiated into RPE cells. The RPE cells and the iPSCs from which they were derived were subject to extensive testing. A surgery that included the removal of the neovascular membrane and transplantation of the autologous iPSC-derived RPE cell sheet under the retina was performed in one of the patients. At 1 year after surgery, the transplanted sheet remained intact, best corrected visual acuity had not improved or worsened, and cystoid macular edema was present. Novel APOBEC1 target 1 (Nat1) (also known as "p97," "Dap5," and "Eif4g2") is a ubiquitously expressed cytoplasmic protein that is homologous to the C-terminal two thirds of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4G (Eif4g1). We previously showed that Nat1-null mouse embryonic stem cells (mES cells) are resistant to differentiation. In the current study, we found that NAT1 and eIF4G1 share many binding proteins, such as the eukaryotic translation initiation factors eIF3 and eIF4A and ribosomal proteins. However, NAT1 did not bind to eIF4E or poly(A)-binding proteins, which are critical for cap-dependent translation initiation. In contrast, compared with eIF4G1, NAT1 preferentially interacted with eIF2, fragile X mental retardation proteins (FMR), and related proteins and especially with members of the proline-rich and coiled-coil-containing protein 2 (PRRC2) family. We also found that Nat1-null mES cells possess a transcriptional profile similar, although not identical, to the ground state, which is established in wild-type mES cells when treated with inhibitors of the ERK and glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3) signaling pathways. In Nat1-null mES cells, the ERK pathway is suppressed even without inhibitors. Ribosome profiling revealed that translation of mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase 3 (Map3k3) and son of sevenless homolog 1 (Sos1) is suppressed in the absence of Nat1 Forced expression of Map3k3 induced differentiation of Nat1-null mES cells. These data collectively show that Nat1 is involved in the translation of proteins that are required for cell differentiation.

BACKGROUND: Discontinuation of contact lens use is mainly caused by contact lens-associated dry eye. It is crucial to delineate contact lens-associated dry eye's multifaceted nature to tailor treatment to each patient's individual needs for future personalized medicine. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to quantify and stratify individual subjective symptoms of contact lens-associated dry eye and clarify its risk factors for future personalized medicine using the smartphone app DryEyeRhythm (Juntendo University). METHODS: This cross-sectional study included iPhone (Apple Inc) users in Japan who downloaded DryEyeRhythm. DryEyeRhythm was used to collect medical big data related to contact lens-associated dry eye between November 2016 and January 2018. The main outcome measure was the incidence of contact lens-associated dry eye. Univariate and multivariate adjusted odds ratios of risk factors for contact lens-associated dry eye were determined by logistic regression analyses. The t-distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding algorithm was used to depict the stratification of subjective symptoms of contact lens-associated dry eye. RESULTS: The records of 4454 individuals (median age 27.9 years, SD 12.6), including 2972 female participants (66.73%), who completed all surveys were included in this study. Among the included participants, 1844 (41.40%) were using contact lenses, and among those who used contact lenses, 1447 (78.47%) had contact lens-associated dry eye. Multivariate adjusted odds ratios of risk factors for contact lens-associated dry eye were as follows: younger age, 0.98 (95% CI 0.96-0.99); female sex, 1.53 (95% CI 1.05-2.24); hay fever, 1.38 (95% CI 1.10-1.74); mental illness other than depression or schizophrenia, 2.51 (95% CI 1.13-5.57); past diagnosis of dry eye, 2.21 (95% CI 1.63-2.99); extended screen exposure time >8 hours, 1.61 (95% CI 1.13-2.28); and smoking, 2.07 (95% CI 1.49-2.88). The t-distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding analysis visualized and stratified 14 groups based on the subjective symptoms of contact lens-associated dry eye. CONCLUSIONS: This study identified and stratified individuals with contact lens-associated dry eye and its risk factors. Data on subjective symptoms of contact lens-associated dry eye could be used for prospective prevention of contact lens-associated dry eye progression.

We conducted salinity choice trials with the stenohaline marine species Takifugu snyderi to test their freshwater (FW) entry frequency in relation to starvation. The fish preferred to enter non-natal FW rather than remain in seawater. No relationship was detected between starvation and FW entry behaviour. Our results provide new empirical evidence of a stenohaline fish entering a non-natal osmotic environment. Further research on the entry of stenohaline species such as this one into lethal environments may help determine if this might help promote the evolution of diadromous life histories.

Allergic conjunctivitis affects approximately 15-20% of the global population and can permanently deteriorate one's quality of life (QoL) and work productivity, leading to societal work force costs. Although not fully understood, allergic conjunctivitis is a multifactorial disease with a complex network of environmental, lifestyle, and host contributory risk factors. To effectively enhance the quality of treatment for patients with allergic conjunctivitis, as well as other allergic diseases, the field must first comprehend the pathology underlying various individualized subjective symptoms and stratify the disease according to risk factors and presentations. Such competent stratification and societal reconstruction that targets the alleviation of the damage due to allergic diseases would greatly help ramify personalized treatments and prevent the projected increase in societal costs imposed by allergic diseases. Owing to the rapid advancements in the information and technology sector, medical big data are greatly accessible and useful to decipher the pathophysiology of many diseases. Such data collected through multi-omics and mobile health have been effective for research on chronic diseases including allergic and immune-mediated diseases. Novel big data containing vast and continuous information on individuals with allergic conjunctivitis and other allergic symptoms are being used to search for causative genes of diseases, gain insights into new biomarkers, prevent disease progression, and, ultimately, improve QoL. The individualized and holistic data accrued from new angles using technological innovations are helping the field realize the principles of P4 medicine: predictive, preventive, personalized, and participatory medicine.

IgG4-related autoimmune hepatitis (IgG4-AIH) is characterized by hepatic inflammation and is considered an IgG4-related disease. Several inflammatory pseudotumors (IPTs) are also considered as IgG4-related diseases;however, there have been no reports of cases wherein both diseases occurred concurrently. An older adult with liver dysfunction was admitted to the hospital and was diagnosed with IgG4-AIH following a liver biopsy;IgG4-positive plasma cell infiltration in the portal tract and high serum IgG4 concentration were detected. A few months following biopsy, imaging studies revealed two IPTs in the liver. The patient was diagnosed with cryptogenic organized pneumonia several months after imaging and was treated with steroids in a different hospital. Her liver dysfunction improved, and one of the two IPTs disappeared in response to steroid treatment. The following is an account of a rare case of IgG4-AIH with IPTs of the liver.
