INTRODUCTION: Transcranial magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound surgery (TcMRgFUS) has the advantage of allowing immediate evaluation of therapeutic effects after each sonication and intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to visualize the lesion. When the image shows that the lesion has missed the planned target and the therapeutic effects are insufficient, the target of the subsequent ablation can be finely adjusted based on the image. The precision of this adjustment is determined by the image quality. However, the current intraoperative image quality with a 3.0T MRI system is insufficient for precisely detecting the lesion. Thus, we developed and validated a method for improving intraoperative image quality. METHODS: Because intraoperative image quality is affected by transmitter gain (TG), we acquired T2-weighted images (T2WIs) with two types of TG: the automatically adjusted TG (auto TG) and the manually adjusted TG (manual TG). To evaluate the character of images with 2 TGs, the actual flip angle (FA), the image uniformity, and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) were measured using a phantom. Then, to assess the quality of intraoperative images, T2WIs with both TGs were acquired during TcMRgFUS for 5 patients. The contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the lesion was retrospectively estimated. RESULTS: The images of the phantom with the auto TG showed substantial variations between the preset and actual FAs (p < 0.01), whereas on the images with the manual TG, there were no variations between the two FAs (p > 0.05). The total image uniformity was considerably lower with the manual TG than with the auto TG (p < 0.01), indicating that the image's signal values with the manual TG were more uniform. The manual TG produced significantly higher SNRs than the auto TG (p < 0.01). In the clinical study, the lesions were clearly detected in intraoperative images with the manual TG, but they were difficult to identify in images with the auto TG. The CNR of lesions in images with manual TG was considerably higher than in images with auto TG (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Regarding intraoperative T2WIs using a 3.0T MRI system during TcMRgFUS, the manual TG method improved image quality and delineated the ablative lesion more clearly than the current method with auto TG.

We report a patient with tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease who had a mild cavitation bioeffect during magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound thalamotomy. During the aligning phase with low-energy sonication, cavitation caused mild dysarthria and paresthesia, prompting treatment cessation. At the same time, tremor and rigidity improved. MRI revealed extensive high-intensity lesions in the thalamus 1 day after the procedure followed by steroid infusion, which resulted in resolution of adverse events. Tremor and rigidity improved 1.5 years after the procedure. Although cavitation can relieve tremors and rigidity, it should be carefully monitored due to potential permanent adverse events by unpredictable and unknown behaviors.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a severe and progressive disease that causes elevated right ventricular systolic pressure, right ventricular hypertrophy and ultimately right heart failure. However, the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms are poorly understood. We previously showed that 3,4-l-dihydroxylphenyalanine (DOPA) sensitizes vasomotor response to sympathetic tone via coupling between the adrenergic receptor alpha1 (ADRA1) and a G protein-coupled receptor 143 (GPR143), a DOPA receptor. We investigated whether DOPA similarly enhances ADRA1-mediated contraction in pulmonary arteries isolated from rats, and whether GPR143 is involved in the PH pathogenesis. Pretreating the isolated pulmonary arteries with DOPA 1 µM enhanced vasoconstriction in response to phenylephrine, an ADRA1 agonist, but not to U-46619, a thromboxane A2 agonist or endothelin-1. We generated Gpr143 gene-deficient (Gpr143-/y) rats, and confirmed that DOPA did not augment phenylephrine-induced contractile response in Gpr143-/y rat pulmonary arteries. We utilized a rat model of monocrotaline (MCT)-induced PH. In the MCT model, the right ventricular systolic pressure was attenuated in the Gpr143-/y rats than in WT rats. Phenylephrine-induced cell migration and proliferation were also suppressed in Gpr143-/y pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells than in WT cells. Our result suggests that GPR143 is involved in the PH pathogenesis in the rat models of PH.

AIM: Hepatocellular adenoma (HCA) has a lower prevalence in Japan than in Western countries and HCA subtypes have been reported for only a few Japanese patients. We analyzed HCA subtype data 38 patients from 23 hospitals in Japan in order to examine character and difference between Western countries. METHODS: To confirm HCA and to analyze subtypes, we performed immunohistochemical examinations. RESULTS: Thirty-eight cases were found to have HCA without cirrhosis. The male/female ratio was 18/20. Ages ranged from 15 to 79 (average, 43.2) years. Male and elder patients are not rare, furthermore, most of elder patients are male. Glycogen storage disease, past history of medicament use, hepatitis B virus surface antigen-positivity, antihepatitis C virus -positivity, diabetes mellitus, obesity, lipid metabolism disorder and alcoholism were present in of 6, 8, 1, 1, 6, 6, 4, and 6 cases, respectively. As to HCA subtypes, HNF1alpha-inactivated HCA, beta-catenin activated HCA (b-HCA), inflammatory HCA (IHCA) and unclassified HCA (U-HCA) accounted for nine (23.7%), four (10.5%), 17 (44.7%) and eight (21.1%) cases, respectively. Two cases showed coexistence of HCA and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) at surgery, and another had HCC which had been detected 23 years after HCA diagnosis. The HCA subtype of one of the former cases was U-HCA, while the remaining two had b-HCA and U-HCA. CONCLUSIONS: In Japanese HCA cases, the proportions of U-HCA, male and elder cases were slightly higher than in Western countries, and most of elder patients were male. IHCA was however common regardless of race, and was assumed to be the predominant subtype of HCA.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: To explore the ability of gadolinium-ethoxybenzyl-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid magnetic resonance imaging (EOB-MRI)/ultrasound (US) fusion imaging (FI) to improve the prognosis of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) by ablating the characteristic findings of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in hepatobiliary phase (HBP) imaging. METHODS: We retrospectively recruited 115 solitary HCC lesions with size of (15.9 ± 4.6) mm. They were all treated by RFA and preoperative EOB-MRI. According to the modalities guiding RFA performance, the lesions were grouped into contrast enhanced US (CEUS)/US guidance group and EOB-MRI/US FI guidance group. For the latter group, the ablation scope was set to cover the HBP findings (peritumoral hypointensity and irregular protruding margin). The presence of HBP findings, the modalities guided RFA, the recurrence rate were observed. RESULTS: After an average follow-up of 377 days, local tumor progression (LTP) and intrahepatic distant recurrence (IDR) were 14.8% and 38.4%, respectively. The lesions having HBP findings exhibited a higher recurrence rate (73.7%) than the lesions without HBP findings (42.9%) (p = 0.002) and a low overall recurrence-free curve using the Kaplan-Meier method (p = 0.038). Using EOB-MRI/US FI as guidance, there was no difference in the recurrence rate between the groups with and without HBP findings (p = 0.799). In lesions with HBP findings, RFA guided by EOB-MRI/US FI (53.8%) produced a lower recurrence rate than CEUS/US (84.0%) (p = 0.045). CONCLUSIONS: The intraprocedurally application of EOB-MRI/US FI to determine ablation scope according to HBP findings is feasible and beneficial for prognosis of RFA.

Primary liver carcinomas with both hepatocytic and cholangiocytic differentiation have been referred to as "combined (or mixed) hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma." These tumors, although described over 100 years ago, have attracted greater attention recently because of interest in possible stem cell origin and perhaps because of greater frequency and clinical recognition. Currently, because of a lack of common terminology in the literature, effective treatment and predictable outcome data have been challenging to accrue. This article represents a consensus document from an international community of pathologists, radiologists, and clinicians who have studied and reported on these tumors and recommends a working terminology for diagnostic and research approaches for further study and evaluation. CONCLUSION: It is recommended that diagnosis is based on routine histopathology with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E); immunostains are supportive, but not essential for diagnosis. UNLABELLED: Neural stem cells in two neurogenic regions, the subventricular zone and the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the hippocampal dentate gyrus, can divide and produce new neurons throughout life. Hippocampal neurogenesis is related to emotions, including depression/anxiety, and the therapeutic effects of antidepressants, as well as learning and memory. The establishment of in vivo imaging for proliferative activity of neural stem cells in the SGZ might be used to diagnose depression and to monitor the therapeutic efficacy of antidepressants. Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with 3'-deoxy-3'-[(18)F]fluoro-l-thymidine ([(18)F]FLT) has been studied to allow visualization of proliferative activity in two neurogenic regions of adult mammals; however, the PET imaging has not been widely used because of lower accumulation of [(18)F]FLT, which does not allow quantitative assessment of the decline in cellular proliferative activity in the SGZ under the condition of depression. We report the establishment of an enhanced PET imaging method with [(18)F]FLT combined with probenecid, an inhibitor of drug transporters at the blood-brain barrier, which can allow the quantitative visualization of neurogenic activity in rats. Enhanced PET imaging allowed us to evaluate reduced cell proliferation in the SGZ of rats with corticosterone-induced depression, and further the recovery of proliferative activity in rats under treatment with antidepressants. This enhanced [(18)F]FLT-PET imaging technique with probenecid can be used to assess the dynamic alteration of neurogenic activity in the adult mammalian brain and may also provide a means for objective diagnosis of depression and monitoring of the therapeutic effect of antidepressant treatment. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Adult hippocampal neurogenesis may play a role in major depression and antidepressant therapy. Establishment of in vivo imaging for hippocampal neurogenic activity may be useful to diagnose depression and monitor the therapeutic efficacy of antidepressants. Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging has been studied to allow visualization of neurogenic activity; however, PET imaging has not been widely used due to the lower accumulation of the PET tracer in the neurogenic regions. Here, we succeeded in establishing highly quantitative PET imaging for neurogenic activity in adult brain with an inhibitor for drug transporter. This enhanced PET imaging allowed evaluation of the decline of neurogenic activity in the hippocampus of rats with depression and the recovery of neurogenic activity by antidepressant treatment.

Cholangiocarcinoma, also referred to as cholangiocellular carcinoma (particularly in Japan), develops along the biliary tract. The tumor may be intra- or extrahepatic and have different features with specific treatments based on the site of origin. Guidelines for diagnosis and management of cholangiorcarcinoma, such as those proposed by EASL (European Association for the Study of the Liver)1 and the Mayo Clinic2 classify the tumor into intrahepatic, perihilar, and distal cholangiocarcinoma. There are three main macroscopic patterns of growth of cholangiocarcinoma: mass-forming, periductal-infiltrating and intraductal. A combination of mass-forming and periductal infiltrating tumors have been shown to have a poor prognosis.3 Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) comprises two microscopic subtypes: bile duct and cholangiolar.4 The bile duct subtype has tall columnar cells that form large glands, whereas cholangiolar tumors are composed of cuboidal and low columnar cells. Patients with cholangiolar tumors, referred to as cholangiolocellular carcinoma, reportedly have a better 5-year survival rate than those with the bile duct type.4.

OBJECTIVE: The aim is to survey primary and permanent dental anomalies: hypodontia, microdontia, a supernumerary tooth, and fused teeth in patients with cleft lip and/or palate. DESIGN: Retrospective longitudinal study Subjects : The subjects were selected from all 1724 patients with cleft lip and/or palate who were registered at the orthodontic clinic of Kyushu University Hospital, Fukuoka, Japan, from 1970 to 2009. Finally, 994 subjects were evaluated for primary dentition, 1352 for permanent dentition, and 871 for the longitudinal changes from primary to permanent dentition. METHODS: The prevalence of dental anomalies was compared for each tooth type, among various cleft types, between males and females, and between the alveolar cleft area and the noncleft area. RESULTS: The prevalence of hypodontia was 16.2% for primary dentition and 52.7% for permanent dentition in the subjects with cleft lip and/or palate. Hypodontia increased with the severity of the cleft type. Multiple hypodontia was found more frequently in the subjects with bilateral cleft lip and palate and the subjects with unilateral cleft lip and palate. Microformed lateral incisors were found in 22.7% of permanent lateral incisors but not in primary dentition. Supernumerary teeth were found in 17.7% of the subjects with cleft lip and/or palate for primary maxillary dentition and in 5.7% for permanent maxillary dentition. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of hypodontia was greater in permanent dentition than in primary dentition; although, it was not much different between males and females or between the right and left sides. The prevalence of dental anomalies was significantly different among four groups by cleft type: cleft lip, cleft lip and alveolus, cleft lip and palate, and cleft palate.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful analytical technique and has been widely used in metabolomics. However, the intrinsic low sensitivity of NMR prevents its applications to systems with limited sample availabilities. In this study, a new experimental approach is presented to analyze mass-scarce samples in limited volumes of less than 300 nL with simple handling. The sample is loaded into the glass capillary, and this capillary is then inserted into a Kel-F rotor. The experimental performance of the capillary-inserted rotor (capillary-insert) is investigated on an isotropic solution of sucrose by the use of a high-resolution micro-sized magic angle spinning (HRµMAS) probe. The acquired NMR signal's sensitivity to a given sample amount is comparable or even higher in comparison to that recorded by the standard solution NMR probe. More importantly, this capillary-insert coupled with the HRµMAS probe allows in-depth studies of heterogeneous samples as the MAS removes the line broadening caused by the heterogeneity. The NMR analyses of mass-limited cultured neurospheres have been demonstrated, resulting in high quality spectra where numerous metabolites are unambiguously identified.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Human hepatocarcinogenesis in cirrhosis is thought to be multistep and characterized by a spectrum of nodular lesions, ranging from low to high grade dysplastic nodules (LGDN and HGDN) to early and progressed hepatocellular carcinoma (eHCC and pHCC). The aim of this study was to investigate the morphophenotypical changes of this sequence and their potential translational significance. METHODS: We scored the vascular profile, ductular reaction/stromal invasion and overexpression of five biomarkers (GPC3, HSP70, GS, CHC, and EZH2), in a series of 100 resected nodules (13 LGDN, 16 HGDN, 42 eHCC and 29 small pHCC). RESULTS: The score separated the four groups of nodules as individual entities (p<0.01). In the sequence, biomarker's overexpression progressively increased with parallel decrease of ductular reaction; the vascular remodeling started very early (LGDN) but did not further develop in a proportion of HCC. eHCC was the most heterogeneous entity, with marginal overlap with HGDN and pHCC. Liver environment (fibrosis, etiology) did not impact on the phenotype of the different nodules. A subclass of eHCC (16/42) without evidence of stromal invasion was identified, suggesting a "preinvasive stage" (p<0.05). For diagnosis, the application of four and five biomarkers (rather than the usual three) improved the sensitivity of the assay for the detection of eHCC (76% and 93% vs. 52%); biomarkers in alternative combinations, and also increased the sensitivity of the assay (GS+CHC+EZH2: 76%; GS+CHC+EZH2+HSP70: 90%). CONCLUSIONS: This study supports the multistep nature of human hepatocarcinogenesis, and suggests that eHCC is more heterogeneous than previously thought. This provides further information of the potential translational significance into clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE: Prior reports suggested that infection with Helicobacter pylori was associated with respiratory diseases; pathogenetic mechanisms however, were not defined. We tested the hypothesis that VacA, an exotoxin of H. pylori, a gastric pathogen, was aspirated into the lung and could stimulate secretion of inflammatory cytokines by lung epithelial cells. METHODS: The presence of VacA was determined by immunohistochemistry in surgical lung biopsy tissue samples from 72 patients with interstitial pneumonia. The effects of VacA on A549 human alveolar epithelial adenocarcinoma cells and normal human bronchial epithelial cells were determined. After incubation with VacA, the secretions of cytokines were measured by Multiplex Luminex(®) Assays. RESULTS: VacA was detected with anti-VacA antibodies in bronchial epithelial cells and alveolar epithelial cells from 10 of 72 patients with interstitial pneumonia. VacA was more prevalent in lungs of patients with collagen vascular disease-associated interstitial pneumonia than in those of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, nonspecific interstitial pneumonia and cryptogenic organizing pneumonia. Incubation of A549 cells and normal human bronchial epithelial cells with VacA for 24 h was cytotoxic, and resulted in vacuolation. VacA induced interleukin-8 production by A549 cells and normal human bronchial epithelial cells and interleukin-6 production by A549 cells. Based on multiplex screening, interleukin-8 and interleukin-6 were the primary secretory products induced by VacA. CONCLUSIONS: H. pylori VacA is present in human lung and can induce interleukin-8 and interleukin-6 production by human lung cells. VacA could have a role in the pathogenesis of respiratory diseases by its cytotoxic effects and by inducing the secretion of interleukin-8 and interleukin-6 by targeted airway epithelial cells.

AIM: Older age has been widely believed to be associated with a poor prognosis of acute liver failure. We aimed to evaluate the impact of older age on outcomes of Japanese patients with severe and fulminant hepatitis in an era of a highly aging society. METHODS: We investigated 105 consecutive adult patients with fulminant hepatitis (FH) or severe hepatitis (SH) admitted to our liver unit between 2000 and 2013, consisting of 14 elderly patients (≥65 years) and 91 younger ones (<65 years). RESULTS: In elderly patients, the proportion of women was greater (P < 0.001), the levels of aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase on admission were lower (P = 0.011 and P = 0.010, respectively), and the survival rate without liver transplantation was lower (P = 0.024) than younger ones. Two of seven SH and all seven FH elderly patients died, whereas all 45 SH and 16 of 46 FH younger patients recovered. Seventy-one percent of elderly patients had underlying diseases with medications, and 57% had additional complications after the start of treatment for acute liver failure. Patients aged 70 years or more showed even poorer prognoses than younger ones and those aged 65-69 years (P = 0.0052 and P = 0.036, respectively). CONCLUSION: Older age was associated with a poor prognosis of patients with SH and FH. One of the reasons other than complications and loss of organ reserve by aging would be that elderly patients consulted us at a more advanced stage of illness than younger ones.

AIM: The outcome of acute liver failure (ALF) is influenced by its etiology, making etiological consideration of ALF important. However, specific etiology could not be identified in 30-40% of adult patients in a Japanese nationwide survey. We examined our patients with severe (SH) and fulminant hepatitis (FH) of indeterminate etiology for the better understanding of ALF. METHODS: We investigated 106 adult patients with SH or FH including 24 of indeterminate etiology between 2000 and 2013, retrospectively. RESULTS: Of 24 patients, 12 were men. Seventeen were SH and seven FH (three FH acute type and four FH subacute type). Eighty-three percent of patients were positive for antinuclear antibody. Seventeen recovered without liver transplantation (LT), two received LT and five died without LT. Histology of 15 patients showed a pattern of acute hepatitis (massive necrosis in four, submassive necrosis in one, severe acute hepatitis in two and acute hepatitis in eight). The involvement of immune-mediated liver injury was histologically suggested in some patients. CONCLUSION: There was no large cluster of etiology in our patients with indeterminate cause. The causes of ALF of indeterminate etiology were the mixture of various minor or rare ones, if precise diagnosis of acute AIH was done. Outcome of our patients with indeterminate cause was not poor if they were treated as early as possible after the diagnosis of severe disease. Careful examination of unknown viral infection, drugs, toxins, undefined metabolic disorders and histology may help detect some of these etiologies.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the use of tumor vessel patterns observed during arterial-phase contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (US) to differentiate regenerative nodules (RN) from early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) or high-grade dysplastic nodules (HGDN) in patients with chronic liver disease. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Pathologically confirmed lesions (83 early HCC, 6 HGDN, and 13 RN with mean maximal diameters of 15.4, 15.3, and 16.2 mm, respectively) were enrolled in this retrospective study. We performed contrast-enhanced US using a perflubutane-based contrast agent. We then classified the tumor vessels observed during the arterial phase of contrast-enhanced US into two patterns: peripheral vessels (centripetal pattern) and central vessels (centrifugal pattern). RESULTS: Eighty-one (97.6%) of the 83 early HCC exhibited various enhancement patterns (hypovascular, 44.6%; isovascular, 25.3%; and hypervascular, 27.7%) and a peripheral vessel pattern, while the remaining 2 lesions (2.4%) exhibited hypovascular enhancement and a central vessel pattern. All 6 HGDN lesions were hypovascular with a peripheral vessel pattern. Twelve (92.3%) of the 13 RN were hypovascular with a central vessel pattern, and the remaining one (7.7%) was hypervascular with a central vessel pattern. When lesions exhibiting a central vessel pattern during arterial-phase contrast-enhanced US were diagnosed as RN, the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of these diagnoses were 100%, 97.8%, and 98.0%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The tumor vessel patterns observed during arterial-phase contrast-enhanced US may be useful for differentiating RN from early HCC or HGDN in patients with chronic liver disease.

Abnormal emotional processing is involved in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). However, whether the neural mechanism underlying this deficit is a trait characteristic of BD and MDD is unclear. The aim of this study was to elucidate the similarities and differences in processing of emotional stimuli between patients with BD and MDD in remission, using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Thirty-two patients (16 with BD and 16 with MDD) and 20 healthy control subjects matched for age, sex, handedness, and years of education were included. An emotional Stroop task, including happy, sad, and threat words, was used. The relative oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin concentration ([oxy-Hb] and [deoxy-Hb]) changes in the frontal region were measured using 52-channels of NIRS. During the threat task, compared to healthy control subjects, patients with BD showed significantly increased [oxy-Hb] in the left inferior frontal region whereas patients with MDD showed significantly increased [oxy-Hb] in the left middle frontal region. During the happy task, compared to healthy control subjects, patients with BD showed significantly decreased [oxy-Hb] in the middle frontal region in both hemispheres. Moreover, patients with BD exhibited decreased [oxy-Hb] and increased [deoxy-Hb] in the superior frontal and middle frontal regions compared to MDD in response to the happy stimulus. No significant differences in [oxy-Hb] or [deoxy-Hb] were seen between the groups during the sad task. These results suggest that abnormal neural responses to emotional stimuli in patients with mood disorders in remission may be a trait characteristic, that negative emotional stimuli are associated with similar prefrontal responses, and that positive emotional stimuli are associated with different prefrontal responses in patients with BD and MDD. These findings indicate that different neural circuits play a role in emotional processing in BD and MDD; this may aid the elucidation of the pathophysiology of these two disorders.

BACKGROUND: Cholangiolocellular carcinoma (CoCC) has distinct pathological characteristics, and CoCC is considered to originate from hepatic progenitor or stem cells. However, the surgical outcome of CoCC has not been clarified in detail. METHODS: We retrospectively studied 275 patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) who underwent hepatectomy between 1990 and 2011. Surgical outcomes were compared between 29 patients with CoCC and 130 patients with mass-forming (MF) type ICC since all patients with CoCC showed MF type on macroscopic findings. RESULTS: The number of patients with chronic liver disease was significantly higher in the CoCC group than in the ICC group. The number of patients with abnormal levels of CA19-9 was significantly lower in the CoCC group than in the ICC group. Portal vein invasion and intrahepatic metastasis were significantly lower in patients with CoCC group than in the ICC group. In the CoCC group, 15 of 28 patients survived for more than 5 years after curative surgery whereas 15 of 102 patients with ICC survived for more than 5 years after curative surgery. The 5-year survival rate was significantly higher in patients with CoCC (75 %) than in patients with ICC (33 %, p = 0.0005). Multivariate analysis showed CoCC, absence of portal vein invasion or hepatic vein invasion, and absence of intrahepatic metastasis to be significant independent prognostic factors for overall survival in patients with MF-type ICC and CoCC. CONCLUSIONS: CoCC is rare, but patients with CoCC had special characteristics with favorable long-term survival due to its less invasive histopathologic characteristics.

The differences in clinical characteristics between late- (LOS) and early-onset schizophrenia (EOS) are well documented. However, very little is known about the neural mechanisms underlying these differences. Here, we compared morphometric abnormalities between patients with EOS and those with LOS. A total of 22 patients with LOS, 24 patients with EOS and 41 healthy control subjects were included in this magnetic resonance imaging study. Brain images were analyzed using DARTEL preprocessing for voxel-based morphometry in SPM8. We tested a main effect of diagnosis in the whole-brain analysis and compared the results among the three groups. We also carried out correlation analyses between regional volumes and clinical variables. Patients with LOS showed larger gray matter (GM) volume of the left precuneus compared with healthy subjects and patients with EOS. Patients with LOS and EOS showed decreased GM volumes in the right insula, left superior temporal gyrus and left orbitofrontal gyrus compared with healthy subjects. A longer duration of illness was associated with reduced GM volume in the temporal pole in patients with EOS. Our findings may help improve our understanding of schizophrenia pathophysiology and shed light on the different and shared neurobiological underpinnings of LOS and EOS.

RESUMO

A man diagnosed at birth with glycogen storage disease type Ia was found to have multiple hepatocellular adenomas at 15 years of age. At 18 years of age, he underwent transarterial tumor embolization in segments 4 and 5. At 27 years of age, the tumor in segment 4 had increased in size on follow-up computed tomography, and he was referred to our hospital. Because the tumor was large, increasing in size, and we could not exclude malignancy, we performed resection of segments 4 and 8 of the liver and partial resection of segment 5 for excisional biopsy. The pathological diagnosis was multiple inflammatory hepatocellular adenomas.
