RESUMO

Anion exchange polymers (AEPs) play a crucial role in green hydrogen production through anion exchange membrane water electrolysis. The chemical stability of AEPs is paramount for stable system operation in electrolysers and other electrochemical devices. Given the instability of aryl ether-containing AEPs under high pH conditions, recent research has focused on quaternized aryl ether-free variants. The primary goal of this review is to provide a greater depth of knowledge on the synthesis of aryl ether-free AEPs targeted for electrochemical devices. Synthetic pathways that yield polyaromatic AEPs include acid-catalysed polyhydroxyalkylation, metal-promoted coupling reactions, ionene synthesis via nucleophilic substitution, alkylation of polybenzimidazole, and Diels-Alder polymerization. Polyolefinic AEPs are prepared through addition polymerization, ring-opening metathesis, radiation grafting reactions, and anionic polymerization. Discussions cover structure-property-performance relationships of AEPs in fuel cells, redox flow batteries, and water and CO2 electrolysers, along with the current status of scale-up synthesis and commercialization.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A laser-induced needle-free microjet injector was developed for rapid, high-speed drug delivery of microliters into the skin. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the clinical rejuvenation effect of repeated dermal injections of the collagen simulator poly- dl -lactic acid (PDLA) using a laser-induced needle-free microjet injector. METHODS: Five PDLA injection sessions using a laser-induced needle-free microjet injector were conducted in patients concerned about aging skin. Facial uplifting, darkness, redness, roughness, pore size, subjective satisfaction, and side effects were evaluated before each session and 4 weeks after treatment completion. Histological evaluation was also performed with immunohistochemical staining of collagen and elastic fibers. RESULTS: The clinical results of 27 female patients were evaluated. The treatment resulted in a noticeable skin surface uplifting (0.711 ± 0.42 mm) and significant improvements in darkness ( p = .013), redness ( p = .009), and roughness ( p = .036), with no significant difference in the pore size ( p = .770). Patients were reported being satisfied with the overall therapeutic effects, despite mild and tolerable adverse effects. Histological findings revealed growth and thickening of collagen and elastic fibers, with marked increase in collagen I and III levels. CONCLUSION: Repeated dermal injections of PDLA using a laser-induced microjet injector offer excellent drug delivery, achieving high efficacy in skin rejuvenation, patient satisfaction, and safety.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has created tensions across different sectors of the society, but the impact has been unequal. Vulnerable people have been most affected, especially those with insecure employment and who have experienced economic hardships due to unemployment and lost wages. The combination of social change and economic hardships due to the pandemic increases the risk of poor mental health. Some countries have utilized financial assistance to alleviate economic hardships caused by COVID-19, and in South Korea, the central and local governments have implemented COVID-19 financial assistance. This study analysed the impact of financial assistance on mental health associated with working status during the COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea. METHODS: The participants of this study were randomly selected from residents of Gyeonggi-do after being proportionally allocated by resident registration population status. A total of 1,000 adult males and females aged 19 years or older in Gyeonggi-do who received financial assistance from the central and local governments were selected. A retrospective pre-post-study design was applied, and mental health surveys including the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale (GAD-7) were applied. RESULTS: The results show that depression scores averaged 5.5 and anxiety scores averaged 4.4 before COVID-19 Financial Assistance. It is similar to the national average of 5.1 and 4.5 respectively at that time. After the assistance, depression scores dropped to 4.5, and anxiety scores dropped to 3.2. Before the assistance, depression and anxiety were higher among temporary day labourers with less job security, and they showed the most significant improvement in mental health. For full-time workers, there was no significant change in anxiety or depression after receiving the assistance. CONCLUSIONS: Financial assistance can provide material resources and also positively affect mental health. In particular, it had a greater impact on the relatively vulnerable groups, such as those in unstable employment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Common hyperkeratotic palmar skin lesions include chronic hand eczema (CHE), hyperkeratotic hand eczema (HHE), palmar psoriasis (PP). However, clinically differentiating these disorders is often challenging. OBJECTIVES: To compare the expressions of keratin (K) 5, K9, K14 and involucrin in palmar hyperkeratotic lesions (HHE, CHE and PP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Immunohistochemical staining was performed on skin biopsy specimens obtained from the palms of patients clinically diagnosed with CHE, HHE and PP (n = 21, 24 and 18, respectively). RESULTS: K5 and K14 expression levels were higher in the spinous and granular layers of PP and HHE compared to CHE. Involucrin was expressed in the basal layer of PP and HHE but not in CHE. K9 expression was decreased in PP and HHE compared to CHE. CONCLUSION: Keratin and involucrin expression in the epidermis are markers of keratinocyte differentiation. Expression levels of keratin and involucrin were similar between the HHE and PP groups, suggesting that HHE shares pathogenesis with PP rather than CHE.

RESUMO

Chordoma is a rare locally aggressive bone malignancy that originates from the notochord. It typically involves the sacrococcygeal area, spheno-occipital region of the skull, and spine. Cutaneous involvement of chordoma, termed as chordoma cutis, is uncommon and usually occurs via direct invasion or local recurrence. Distant metastasis to the skin is very rare. We report a case of chordoma cutis on the scalp, which lacked characteristic physaliferous cells but tested positive for brachyury, thus supporting the diagnosis of chordoma cutis. The patient, who presented with a solitary translucent nodule on the scalp, was previously diagnosed with chordoma on the vertebral column and skull 8 months prior. Microscopic examination showed a cord-like arrangement of plasmacytoid cells within a myxoid stroma. Physaliferous cells were not observed, and cytokeratin AE1/AE3 staining was negative; however, brachyury and epithelial membrane antigen staining was positive, leading to the diagnosis of chordoma cutis. Therefore, clinicians must include chordoma cutis in the differential diagnosis of translucent nodular lesions on the skin of patients formerly diagnosed with chordoma.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare computed tomography (CT) findings between patients with severe and nonsevere acute alcoholic hepatitis (AAH). METHODS: We included 96 patients diagnosed with AAH between January 2011 and October 2021 who underwent 4-phase liver CT and laboratory blood tests. Two radiologists reviewed the initial CT images with respect to distribution and grade of hepatic steatosis; transient parenchymal arterial enhancement (TPAE); and presence of cirrhosis, ascites, and hepatosplenomegaly. A Maddrey discriminant function score (4.6 × [patient's prothrombin time - control] + total bilirubin [mg/mL]) was used as cutoff indicator for severity, with a score of 32 or higher indicating severe disease. The image findings were compared between the severe (n = 24) and nonsevere (n = 72) groups using the χ 2 test or Fisher exact test. After univariate analysis, the most significant factor was identified using a logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: In the univariate analysis, there were significant between-group differences in the TPAE, liver cirrhosis, splenomegaly, and ascites ( P < 0.0001, P < 0.0001, P = 0.0002, and P = 0.0163, respectively). Among them, TPAE was the only significant factor for severe AAH ( P < 0.0001; odds ratio, 48.1; 95% confidence interval, 8.3-280.6). Using this single indicator, the estimated accuracy, positive predictive, and negative predictive values were 86%, 67%, and 97%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Transient parenchymal arterial enhancement was the only significant CT finding in severe AAH.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sensitive skin is a subjective cutaneous hyper-reactivity that occurs in response to various innocuous stimuli. Keratinocytes have recently been shown to participate in sensory transduction by releasing many neuroactive molecules that bind to intra-epidermal free nerve endings and modulate nociception. In the literature, the characterization of these interactions has been based on the co-culture of keratinocyte and mammalian-origin neuronal cell lines. In this study, we established an in vitro model based on a co-culture of primary human keratinocytes and differentiated SH-SY5Y cells, a human neuronal cell line. METHODS: Human epidermal keratinocytes and SH-SY5Y cells were monocultured and co-cultured. Changes in calcium influx, substance P, inflammatory cytokines, and neuropeptides between the monoculture and co-culture groups treated with capsaicin only and capsaicin with transient receptor potential channel vanilloid subfamily member 1 (TRPV1) antagonist, trans-4-tert-butylcyclohexanol (TTBC), together. In addition, the difference in stinging sensation was evaluated by applying it to the volunteers. RESULTS: When SH-SY5Y cells were co-cultured with keratinocytes, they had no significant effect on axonal development. Substance P was also released after capsaicin treatment and reduced by TTBC under co-culture conditions. Moreover, the expression of inflammatory cytokines and neuropeptides was significantly increased in co-cultured keratinocytes compared to that under monoculture conditions. In addition, the stinging sensation was significantly induced after the application of capsaicin in vivo and was relieved after the application of the TRPV1 antagonist. CONCLUSION: We demonstrated that the novel co-culture model is functionally valid through capsaicin and TRPV1 antagonist. We also confirmed that TTBC could be used for the treatment of sensitive skin through a co-culture model and in vivo tests. This co-culture model of keratinocytes and SH-SY5Y cells may be useful in vitro alternatives for studying the close communication between keratinocytes and neuronal cells and for screening therapeutic drugs for sensitive skin.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of gray-scale ultrasound (GSU), strain elastography (SE), and shear wave elastography (SWE) for lateral epicondylitis (LE). METHODS: From November 2018 to March 2021, 87 common extensor tendons (CETs) of 70 patients were evaluated using elbow ultrasound. Patients were divided into two groups: patients with LE and those without lateral elbow pain. GSU, SE, and SWE findings from the two groups were compared, and the diagnostic performance was compared for significant variables. RESULTS: Among the 70 patients, 41 with 44 CETs were clinically diagnosed with LE, and 29 with 43 CETs had no lateral elbow pain. Hypoechogenicity, calcification, and hyperemia were significantly different. Strain ratio (SR), stiffness, and shear wave velocity (SWV) were also significantly different. The diagnostic accuracy of stiffness and SWV was better than that of other significant findings. Furthermore, there were no superiorities in SR, stiffness, or SWV. CONCLUSION: Both SE and SWE can be valuable diagnostic tools for diagnosing LE. The diagnostic performances of both SE and SWE were similar in the detection of LE.

RESUMO

Modern electrochemical energy conversion devices require more advanced proton conductors for their broad applications. Phosphonated polymers have been proposed as anhydrous proton conductors for fuel cells. However, the anhydride formation of phosphonic acid functional groups lowers proton conductivity and this prevents the use of phosphonated polymers in fuel cell applications. Here, we report a poly(2,3,5,6-tetrafluorostyrene-4-phosphonic acid) that does not undergo anhydride formation and thus maintains protonic conductivity above 200 °C. We use the phosphonated polymer in fuel cell electrodes with an ion-pair coordinated membrane in a membrane electrode assembly. This synergistically integrated fuel cell reached peak power densities of 1,130 mW cm-2 at 160 °C and 1,740 mW cm-2 at 240 °C under H2/O2 conditions, substantially outperforming polybenzimidazole- and metal phosphate-based fuel cells. Our result indicates a pathway towards using phosphonated polymers in high-performance fuel cells under hot and dry operating conditions.

RESUMO

Benign lichenoid keratosis is one of the most common skin lesions that develop on the faces of middle-aged women. This study aimed to find an effective treatment method for benign lichenoid keratosis. A total of 49 patients, who had a positive diagnosis during 2010-2018, were enrolled in the study. An Investigator's Global Assessment of the lesion was done using the 5-point visual analog scale to evaluate treatment efficacy. After excluding subjects who did not have a follow-up photograph, 38 subjects were given an Investigator's Global Assessment score. Combination therapy using laser and a topical agent was useful in the management of benign lichenoid keratosis on the face. Ablative laser was effective for immediate improvement of the lesion, whereas non-ablative laser was also useful and showed several benefits over ablative laser. Optimal treatment should be decided after considering the patient's preference, compliance with treatment regimen, and skin type.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Omalizumab is a very important drug for the treatment of chronic urticaria. Although omalizumab's therapeutic efficacy has been demonstrated, data on real-world experiences in Korea, especially regarding chronic inducible urticaria (CIndU), are limited. This study attempted to compare the efficacy of omalizumab in Korean chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) and CIndU patients. METHODS: Fifty-two CSU and 29 CIndU patients were included and Urticaria Activity Score 7 (UAS7) at baseline, week 4, and week 12 was assessed retrospectively. RESULTS: Omalizumab 150 mg significantly decreased UAS7 in both patients with CSU and CIndU with only one dose (P < 0.001). The significant decrease in the UAS7 scores of both groups of patients continued from weeks 4 to 12. Although there was no significant difference in treatment efficacy between the two groups, the symptoms of patients with CSU tended to improve faster; furthermore, the number of antihistamines administered daily reduced more significantly in this patient group (P = 0.047). Additionally, the decrease in the UAS7 score between baseline and week 12 and the response rate were higher in patients with CSU. CONCLUSION: Omalizumab may be slightly more effective against CSU than against CIndU. Regarding the CIndU subtypes, dermatographic urticaria was associated with the greatest reduction in the UAS7 score, and patients with this condition showed the highest response rate, indicating the best effect of omalizumab. The duration of chronic urticaria was greater in non-responders than in responders (P = 0.025). Conversely, baseline immunoglobulin E levels were significantly higher in responders (P = 0.039).

RESUMO

Thaumatin was isolated as a sweet-tasting protein. Arabidopsis has over 20 Thaumatin-Like Protein (TLP)/Osmoti-Like Protein (OLP) genes that belong to the PR5 family. Although biotic stress-related functions of TLPs have been reported from transgenic lines expressing TLPs, it is nonetheless necessary to investigate genetic phenotypes produced by defects in the TLP genes. In this report, four TLP genes were selected based on sequence similarities (Thau1/2/3/4), and the corresponding mutant thau1/2/3/4 was examined for biotic and abiotic stress responses. The thau1/2/3/4 mutant showed increased susceptibility to the Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 infection, and reduced sensitivity to the ABA and drought stress treatments. Each of the four thaumatin genes showed different gene expression patterns for ABA treatment. Moreover, ABA-inductions of Thau1/2/3/4 were largely dependent on the intact ABA signaling pathway mediated by PYR/PYL receptors. Among the many ABA-responsive genes affected by the defects of Thau1/2/3/4, reduced expression of P5CS1 with decreased accumulation phenotype of prolines indicates that compromised proline synthesis may be associated with the stress phenotypes of thau1/2/3/4. Our data suggest that Thau1/2/3/4 have a function in both biotic stress and abiotic stress signal transduction through the regulation of proline synthesis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the added value of high-resolution diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) to T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) for evaluation of extramural tumor invasion (EMTI) in patients with primary rectal cancer. METHODS: Seventy-eight patients who had undergone 3.0-T magnetic resonance imaging including DWI (b = 0, 1000 s/mm2, 2 mm iso-voxel) and subsequent surgery were included. Two blinded radiologists independently read the T2WI first and then the combined DWI set. They recorded their confidence level using a 5-point scale. The diagnostic accuracy was calculated by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis based on the histopathological results as the reference. RESULTS: The study population consisted of EMTI positive (n = 44) and negative (n = 34). The area under the curve was not significantly increased after adding DWI to T2WI (reader 1, 0.868-0.856, P = 0.5618; reader 2, 0.848-0.865, P = 0.4539). CONCLUSION: Adding DWI to T2WI showed no additional diagnostic value for the evaluation of EMTI in patients with primary rectal cancer.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To compare the diagnostic performance between strain elastography and shear wave elastography (SWE) for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). METHODS: Between July 2018 and June 2019, 66 consecutive patients with 95 imaged wrists underwent wrist ultrasound, including grayscale ultrasound, strain elastography, and SWE, because of the suspicion of CTS. During wrist ultrasound, the cross-sectional area (CSA), strain ratio, elasticity, and shear wave velocity of each median nerve were measured at the proximal carpal bone level (scaphoid to pisiform). The variables were compared between the normal and CTS groups by using the independent t test, and subgroup analyses were performed using one-way analysis of variance. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to evaluate the diagnostic performance of each variable. RESULTS: CSA, elasticity, and shear wave velocity showed significant intergroup differences (P < 0.001, P < 0.001, and P = 0.002, respectively). However, the strain ratio showed no statistically significant intergroup difference (P = 0.639). In the subgroup analyses, elasticity showed significantly higher values in the severe group than in the mild and moderate groups (P < 0.001 and P = 0.001, respectively). Other parameters showed no significant differences among the different subgroups. The areas under the ROC curve were 0.823 for CSA, 0.772 for elasticity, and 0.779 for shear wave velocity. The differences in the areas under the ROC curve among CSA, elasticity, and shear wave velocity were not statistically significant (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: SWE has a good diagnostic value in CTS. In particular, elasticity can discriminate the severe group from the other groups.

RESUMO

Plants have evolutionarily established resistance responses to a variety of abiotic stress conditions, in which ABA mediates the integrated regulation of these stress responses. Numerous proteins function at the transcription level or at the protein level when contributing to controls of the ABA signaling process. Although osmotin is identified as a salt-inducible protein, its function in the abiotic stress response is yet to be elucidated. To examine the role of Arabidopsis OSMOTIN 34 (OSM34) in the ABA signaling pathway, a deletion mutant osm34 generated by a CRISPR/Cas9 system and the double mutant osm34 osml (osmotin 34-like) were analyzed for various ABA responses. Both osm34 and osm34 osml showed reduced levels of ABA responses in seeds and leaves. Moreover, proline level and expression of the proline biosynthesis gene P5CS1 was significantly reduced in osm34 osml. Interestingly, OSM34 binds to SKP2A, an F-Box protein whose transcription is induced by ABA. The protein stability of OSM34 was determined to be under the control of the 26S proteasome. In conclusion, our data suggest that OSM34 functions as a positive regulator in the generation of ABA responses and is under post-translational control.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the efficacy and safety of a new portable ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound system (USgHIFU) with advanced targeting and beam steering technology for the treatment of uterine fibroids. METHODS: Fifty-nine uterine fibroids from 36 participants (mean age, 44.9 ± 4.1 years) were included from November 2013 to November 2015. All participants were treated with HIFU, with 3D electronic steering. MR imaging studies were performed before HIFU, immediately after HIFU, and 1 month and 3 (or 5) months after the HIFU treatment. The non-perfused volume ratio (NPVR), fibroid volume shrinkage (FVS), symptom improvement, quantified life quality assessment, and safety were analyzed. A long-term follow-up was conducted in July to December 2017 (mean, 32.2 months). RESULTS: The volume of the treated uterine fibroids ranged from 7.5 to 274.4 cm3 (mean, 69.8 cm3; SD, 64.3 cm3). The mean NPVR on the immediate post-HIFU MR imaging was 74.8 ± 25.2%. The mean FVS was 17.3% at 1 month, 33.3% at 3 months, and 45.1% at 5 months after HIFU treatment. The mean treatment time was 44.6 ± 28.2 min per fibroid and 72.9 ± 31.4 min per participant. Uterine fibroid-related symptoms and quality of life showed statistically significant improvement after the HIFU treatment. No significant symptoms related to safety or complications occurred. In the long-term follow-up, 78.8% of those surveyed were satisfied with their HIFU treatment. CONCLUSION: This clinical trial showed that a portable USgHIFU with advanced functions may safely and effectively treat uterine fibroids. KEY POINTS: • A portable compact ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) can effectively and safely treat uterine fibroids. • Advanced functions, such as portability, targeted forecasting, electronic beam steering, and interleaved scanning, might be helpful in enhancing the clinical applicability of ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound. • In the long-term follow-up of more than 2 years, approximately 80% of those surveyed were satisfied with their HIFU treatment.

RESUMO

KEY MESSAGE: We determined the structure of OsPYL/RCAR3:OsPP2C50 complex with pyrabactin. Our results suggest that a less-conserved phenylalanine of OsPYL/RCAR subfamily I is one of considerations of ABA agonist development for Oryza sativa. Pyrabactin is a synthetic chemical mimicking abscisic acid (ABA), a naturally occurring phytohormone orchestrating abiotic stress responses. ABA and pyrabactin share the same pocket in the ABA receptors but pyrabactin modulates ABA signaling differently, exhibiting both agonistic and antagonistic effects. To explore structural determinants of differential functionality of pyrabactin, we determined the crystal structure of OsPYL/RCAR3:pyrabactin:OsPP2C50, the first rice ABA receptor:co-receptor complex structure with a synthetic ABA mimicry. The water-mediated interaction between the wedging Trp-259 of OsPP2C50 and pyrabactin is lost, undermining the structural integrity of the ABA receptor:co-receptor. The loss of the interaction of the wedging tryptophan of OsPP2C with pyrabactin appears to contribute to the weaker functionality of pyrabactin. Pyrabactin in the OsPYL/RCAR3:OsPP2C50 complex adopts a conformation different from that in ABA receptors from Arabidopsis. Phe125, specific to the subfamily I of OsPYL/RCARs in the ABA binding pocket, appears to be the culprit for the differential conformation of pyrabactin. Although the gate closure essential for the integrity of ABA receptor:co-receptor is preserved in the presence of pyrabactin, Phe125 apparently restricts accessibility of pyrabactin, leading to decreased affinity for OsPYL/RCAR3 evidenced by phosphatase assay. However, Phe125 does not affect conformation and accessibility of ABA. Yeast two-hybrid, germination and gene transcription analyses in rice also support that pyrabactin imposes a weak effect on the control of ABA signaling. Taken together, our results suggest that phenylalanine substitution of OsPYL/RCARs subfamily I may be one of considerations for ABA synthetic agonist development.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Several terms have been used to characterize skin types. However, these are not based on evident dermatologic definitions, which usually include subjective and psychological properties. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to establish a new practical questionnaire to classify skin subtypes in Korean women to establish treatment and skin care guidance. METHODS: Eight experts developed consensus statements about skin types and created a questionnaire. The content was categorized into four major subtypes: dry or non-dry; oily or nonoily; sensitive or nonsensitive; and pigmented or nonpigmented. A total of 512 patients completed the questionnaire. Correlations with age, skin Fitzpatrick's phototypes, and dermatologic comorbidities were analyzed. RESULTS: Korean women commonly have oily skin but complain of dryness after cleansing. They are especially sensitive to skin care products and prone to developing pigmentary lesions. There was a trend in the proportion of dry skin subtype that increased as pigmented skin increased and oily skin decreased with advanced age. The proportion of sensitive skin was higher in patients with dermatologic comorbidities. The proportion of the pigmented skin was higher in darker Fitzpatrick skin phototypes. CONCLUSION: This is the first questionnaire established for Korean women to classify practical skin subtypes and may provide a basis for treating various skin conditions.

RESUMO

This study was undertaken to evaluate whether exosomes from human adipose-derived stem cells (ASC-exo) can stimulate the regeneration of human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). Immunoblotting and FACS analyses showed that ASC-exo was positive for exosome markers. Fluorescence tracking revealed that the contents of ASC-exo were transferred into the HDFs. ASC-exo treatment also stimulated the proliferation and migration of HDFs in a dose-dependent manner. Similarly, the expression levels of genes involved in skin cell proliferation were increased by ASC-exo. Microarray analysis showed an enrichment of microRNAs that have regenerative function. We suggest that the ASC-exo can stimulate skin cell proliferation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to investigate whether focused ultrasound (FUS) treatment with a higher mechanical index (MI) can enhance the effects of combined chemotherapy more than with a lower MI, and to evaluate the feasibility of the chemotherapy combined with FUS at a higher MI as an alternative treatment protocol. METHODS: Mice in the first study were divided into six groups: control, chemotherapy only (GEM), two groups treated with FUS only at two different MIs, and two groups treated with chemotherapy and FUS (GEM + FUS). Mice were treated with a single-session treatment; one session consisted of three weekly treatments and 1 week of follow-up monitoring. In the second study, mice were assigned to two groups (GEM, GEM + FUS) and treated with four treatment sessions. RESULTS: In the single-session treatment, tumor growth was most effectively suppressed in GEM + FUS group with a higher MI. Tumor growth rate was significantly lower in GEM + FUS group than in GEM group for multiple-session treatment. Specifically, three of ten mice in GEM + FUS group showed complete remission. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that FUS at a higher MI can enhance chemotherapy outcomes more than at a lower MI and demonstrated the potential of FUS in combination with chemotherapy as a new cancer treatment protocol. KEY POINTS: • Combined treatment of chemotherapy and focused ultrasound can effectively suppress tumor growth. • For the focused ultrasound treatment conditions used in this study, focused ultrasound with relatively higher mechanical index shows more enhanced therapeutic outcomes than with the lower mechanical index. • Combination therapy shows the possibility as a new cancer treatment protocol.
