BACKGROUND: With the continuous increasing availability of new filler products, each hyaluronic acid filler brand has distinctive pharmacokinetics, which may be associated with different complications. Therefore, the long-term safety of new generations of fillers should be evaluated. OBJECTIVE: This prospective, multicenter, observational, postmarketing study (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT04738019) aimed to investigate the incidence of delayed-onset nodules and adverse reactions after the injection of new hyaluronic acid fillers (YYS series) into the facial skin. METHODS: Subjects scheduled to receive an injection YYS series filler were followed up for 52 weeks. The authors aimed to determine the incidence of a self-reported delayed-onset nodule-a visible or palpable nodule or mass at the injection site that was detected beyond the 14th day following the injection-during the 1-year follow-up period. RESULTS: Among the 1,022 subjects who received an injection of the YYS series, the incidences of delayed-onset nodules were 0% for YYS 360, YYS 540, and YYS 720. A 0.21% incidence (1 delayed hypersensitivity reaction) of a delayed-onset adverse reaction was noted for YYS 720, although none were reported for YYS 360 and YYS 540. CONCLUSION: In this study, a notably low frequency of adverse reactions associated with the YYS series was observed.

Neurofibromatosis Type II (NF2) is an autosomal dominant cancer predisposition syndrome in which germline haploinsufficiency at the NF2 gene confers a greatly increased propensity for tumor development arising from tissues of neural crest derived origin. NF2 encodes the tumor suppressor, Merlin, and its biochemical function is incompletely understood. One well-established function of Merlin is as a negative regulator of group A serine/threonine p21-activated kinases (PAKs). In these studies we explore the role of PAK1 and its closely related paralog, PAK2, both pharmacologically and genetically, in Merlin-deficient Schwann cells and in a genetically engineered mouse model (GEMM) that develops spontaneous vestibular and spinal schwannomas. We demonstrate that PAK1 and PAK2 are both hyper activated in Merlin-deficient murine schwannomas. In preclinical trials, a pan Group A PAK inhibitor, FRAX-1036, transiently reduced PAK1 and PAK2 phosphorylation in vitro, but had insignificant efficacy in vivo. NVS-PAK1-1, a PAK1 selective inhibitor, had a greater but still minimal effect on our GEMM phenotype. However, genetic ablation of Pak1 but not Pak2 reduced tumor formation in our NF2 GEMM. Moreover, germline genetic deletion of Pak1 was well tolerated, while conditional deletion of Pak2 in Schwann cells resulted in significant morbidity and mortality. These data support the further development of PAK1-specific small molecule inhibitors and the therapeutic targeting of PAK1 in vestibular schwannomas and argue against PAK1 and PAK2 existing as functionally redundant protein isoforms in Schwann cells.

Mumps is the second-most reported infectious disease in South Korea; however, due to the low pathogen confirmation rate in laboratory diagnoses, we proposed a method for reevaluating the high incidence rate via the laboratory verification of other viral diseases. In 2021, 63 cases of pharyngeal or cheek mucosal swabs of suspected mumps cases in Gwangju, South Korea, were assessed for causative pathogens using massive simultaneous pathogen testing. More than one respiratory virus was detected in 60 cases (95.2%), 44 (73.3%) of which were codetected. Human rhinovirus was detected in 47 cases, followed by human herpesvirus (HHV)6 in 30; HHV4 (17), human bocavirus (17), HHV5 (10), and human parainfluenza virus 3 (6) were also detected. Our findings suggest the need for further investigations on the pathogenesis of diseases mimicking mumps, which are considered to aid with appropriate public health responses, treatment, and the prevention of infectious disease outbreaks.

N 6-methyladenosine (m6A) RNA methylation has been shown to play a crucial role in plant development and floral transition. Two recent studies have identified FIONA1 as an m6A methyltransferase that regulates the floral transition in Arabidopsis through influencing the stability of CONSTANS (CO), SUPPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CONSTANS 1 (SOC1), and FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC). In this study, we confirmed that FIONA1 is an m6A methyltransferase that installs m6A marks in a small group of mRNAs. Furthermore, we show that, in addition to its role in influencing the stability of CO, SOC1, and FLC, FIONA1-mediated m6A methylation influences the splicing of FLC, a key floral repressor, and the stability of SQUAMOSA PROMOTER-BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE 3 (SPL3) and SEPALLATA3 (SEP3), floral activators, which together play a vital role in floral transition in Arabidopsis. Our study confirms the function of FIONA1 as an m6A methyltransferase and suggests a close molecular link between FIONA1-mediated m6A methylation and the splicing of FLC and the destabilization of SPL3 and SEP3 in flowering time control.

As the most abundant internal modification of mRNA, N6 -methyladenosine (m6 A) methylation of RNA is emerging as a new layer of epitranscriptomic gene regulation in cellular processes, including embryo development, flowering-time control, microspore generation and fruit ripening, in plants. However, the cellular role of m6 A in plant responses to environmental stimuli remains largely unexplored. In this study, we show that m6 A methylation plays an important role in salt stress tolerance in Arabidopsis. All mutants of m6 A writer components, including MTA, MTB, VIRILIZER (VIR) and HAKAI, displayed salt-sensitive phenotypes in an m6 A-dependent manner. The vir mutant, in which the level of m6 A was most highly reduced, exhibited salt-hypersensitive phenotypes. Analysis of the m6 A methylome in the vir mutant revealed a transcriptome-wide loss of m6 A modification in the 3' untranslated region (3'-UTR). We demonstrated further that VIR-mediated m6 A methylation modulates reactive oxygen species homeostasis by negatively regulating the mRNA stability of several salt stress negative regulators, including ATAF1, GI and GSTU17, through affecting 3'-UTR lengthening linked to alternative polyadenylation. Our results highlight the important role played by epitranscriptomic mRNA methylation in the salt stress response of Arabidopsis and indicate a strong link between m6 A methylation and 3'-UTR length and mRNA stability during stress adaptation.

Although many treatment options are available, the treatment of melasma remains challenging. To investigate the efficacy and safety of combined treatment for melasma with a quality (Q)-switched 1064-nm neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser and a topical mixture of tranexamic acid, niacinamide, and kojic acid. Twenty-five patients with melasma were enrolled. One side of the face was treated with low-fluence Q-switched 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser alone, while the other side was treated with a combination of laser treatment and a topical mixture of tranexamic acid, niacinamide, and kojic acid. Each treatment consisted of five sessions at 2-week intervals, and patients were followed up 4 weeks after the last treatment. Overall improvement was assessed using the hemi Melasma Area and Severity Index (MASI) score. A specialized imaging system (Markview®, PSIPLAUS Inc., Suwon, Korea) was used to record images of the patients' faces, and photographic assessment was performed by two independent evaluators at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 weeks using a five-point grading scale. Although both sides of the face showed clinical improvement, combination treatment demonstrated a greater improvement in the mean hemi MASI score compared to laser treatment alone. Improvement in melasma at 12 weeks, according to the evaluation of patient images by two independent evaluators, was greater with combination treatment. This study demonstrated that the combination of treatment with a low-fluence Q-switched 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser and a topical mixture of tranexamic acid, niacinamide, and kojic acid would be a good option for melasma treatment.

Exosomes are nano-sized extracellular vesicles released by the majority of the cell types. Exosomes play a major role in intercellular communication via transferring cargoes between cells and altering specific functions of the target cells. The interest in the biological activities of exosomes has been increasing and their therapeutic role has already been demonstrated in various diseases. Recently, there is growing evidence that stem cell-derived exosomes (including mesenchymal stem cell, umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal cell, adipose-derived stem cell, and pluripotent stem cell) can also be used in a variety of skin conditions due to their regenerative and anti-inflammatory capacity. In this paper, we will provide a brief overview of recent studies on practical applications of exosomes in several dermatologic conditions and their potential mechanisms. By elucidating the different mechanisms and therapeutic roles of exosomes in various disease conditions, we hope dermatologists and other clinicians to establish better strategies for disease treatment with further research.

Schwannomas are common, highly morbid and medically untreatable tumors that can arise in patients with germ line as well as somatic mutations in neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). These mutations most commonly result in the loss of function of the NF2-encoded protein, Merlin. Little is known about how Merlin functions endogenously as a tumor suppressor and how its loss leads to oncogenic transformation in Schwann cells (SCs). Here, we identify nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB)-inducing kinase (NIK) as a potential drug target driving NF-κB signaling and Merlin-deficient schwannoma genesis. Using a genomic approach to profile aberrant tumor signaling pathways, we describe multiple upregulated NF-κB signaling elements in human and murine schwannomas, leading us to identify a caspase-cleaved, proteasome-resistant NIK kinase domain fragment that amplifies pathogenic NF-κB signaling. Lentiviral-mediated transduction of this NIK fragment into normal SCs promotes proliferation, survival, and adhesion while inducing schwannoma formation in a novel in vivo orthotopic transplant model. Furthermore, we describe an NF-κB-potentiated hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) to MET proto-oncogene receptor tyrosine kinase (c-Met) autocrine feed-forward loop promoting SC proliferation. These innovative studies identify a novel signaling axis underlying schwannoma formation, revealing new and potentially druggable schwannoma vulnerabilities with future therapeutic potential.

Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) methylation is a pivotal process in the assembly and activity of ribosomes, which in turn play vital roles in the growth, development and stress responses of plants. Although few methyltransferases responsible for rRNA methylation have been identified in plant chloroplasts, the nature and function of these enzymes in chloroplasts remain largely unknown. In this study, we characterized ArabidopsisRsmD (At3g28460), an ortholog of the methyltransferase responsible for N2-methylguanosine (m2G) modification of 16S rRNA in Escherichia coli. Confocal microscopic analysis of an RsmD- green fluorescent protein fusion protein revealed that RsmD is localized to chloroplasts. Primer extension analysis indicated that RsmD is responsible for m2G methylation at position 915 in the 16S rRNA of Arabidopsis chloroplasts. Under cold stress, rsmd mutant plants exhibited retarded growth, i.e. had shorter roots, lower fresh weight and pale-green leaves, compared with wild-type (WT) plants. However, these phenotypes were not detected in response to drought or salt stress. Notably, the rsmd mutant was hypersensitive to erythromycin or lincomycin and accumulated fewer chloroplast proteins compared with the WT, suggesting that RsmD influences translation in chloroplasts. Complementation lines expressing RsmD in the rsmd mutant background recovered WT phenotypes. Importantly, RsmD harbored RNA methyltransferase activity. Collectively, the findings of this study indicate that RsmD is a chloroplast 16S rRNA methyltransferase responsible for m2G915 modification that plays a role in the adaptation of Arabidopsisto cold stress.

With the increasing demand for body contouring, botulinum toxin (BTX) injection is being widely used off-label for muscular hypertrophy. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has investigated the clinical efficacy of BTX type A (BTX-A) in deltoid muscle hypertrophy. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of intramuscular injection of BTX in reducing deltoid muscle hypertrophy. Overall, 10 patients with bilateral deltoid muscle hypertrophy were treated with an intramuscular injection of prabotulinum toxin A, with a total of 50 units [U] administered per patient. As measured by ultrasonography, the thickness of the deltoid muscles was significantly decreased at weeks 2 and 12. In addition, the clinical assessment score by blinded investigators was improved after the treatment; however, patients' satisfaction scores were relatively low. No major complications were reported. Therefore, intramuscular injection of BTX-A seems to be a candidate for novel treatment option for deltoid muscle hypertrophy. Further larger clinical studies are warranted to confirm the efficacy of BTX-A.

BACKGROUND: Extensive efforts have been made toward reducing postoperative opioid use in children. In this study, we assessed whether propacetamol, or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), or their combination could effectively reduce opioid use in children after laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. METHODS: This randomized, double-blind clinical trial included 159 children aged 6 months to 6 years. Children were allocated into 1 of the following 3 groups: group I was treated with 10 mg·kg-1 ibuprofen, group P was treated with 30 mg·kg-1 propacetamol, and group I + P was treated with both drugs in their respective concentrations. If the face-legs-activity-crying-consolability (FLACC) score was ≥4 during the postanesthesia care unit stay, 1.0 µg·kg-1 fentanyl was administered as a rescue analgesic. The number of patients who received rescue fentanyl in the postanesthesia care unit was defined as the primary outcome; this was analyzed using the χ2 test. The secondary outcomes included the FLACC and the parents' postoperative pain measure (PPPM) scores until the 24-hour postoperative period. RESULTS: Among the 144 enrolled patients, 28.6% in group I, 66.7% in group P, and 12.8% in group I + P received rescue fentanyl in the postanesthesia care unit (P < .001). The highest FLACC score was lower in group I + P than in either group I or P (P = .007 and P < .001, respectively). Group I + P presented significantly lower PPPM scores than group P at 4 and 12 hours postoperative (P = .03 and .01, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The use of ibuprofen plus propacetamol immediately following laparoscopic hernia repair surgery in children resulted in the reduced use of an opioid drug compared with the use of propacetamol alone.

The pentatricopeptide repeat proteins PPR4 and EMB2654 have been shown to be required for the trans-splicing of plastid rps12 transcripts in Zea mays (maize) and Arabidopsis, respectively, but their roles in this process are not well understood. We investigated the functions of the Arabidopsis and Oryza sativa (rice) orthologs of PPR4, designated AtPPR4 (At5g04810) and OsPPR4 (Os4g58780). Arabidopsis atppr4 and rice osppr4 mutants are embryo-lethal and seedling-lethal 3 weeks after germination, respectively, showing that PPR4 is essential in the development of both dicot and monocot plants. Artificial microRNA-mediated mutants of AtPPR4 displayed a specific defect in rps12 trans-splicing, with pale-green, yellowish or albino phenotypes, according to the degree of knock-down of AtPPR4 expression. Comparison of RNA footprints in atppr4 and emb2654 mutants showed a similar concordant loss of extensive footprints at the 3' end of intron 1a and at the 5' end of intron 1b in both cases. EMB2654 is known to bind within the footprint region in intron 1a and we show that AtPPR4 binds to the footprint region in intron 1b, via its PPR motifs. Binding of both PPR4 and EMB2654 is essential to juxtapose the two intron halves and to maintain the RNAs in a splicing-competent structure for the efficient trans-splicing of rps12 intron 1, which is crucial for chloroplast biogenesis and plant development. The similarity of EMB2654 and PPR4 orthologs and their respective binding sites across land plant phylogeny indicates that their coordinate function in rps12 trans-splicing has probably been conserved for 500 million years.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The selective electrothermolysis of the sebaceous glands was suggested as a novel therapeutic option for facial acne. However, there has been no randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the monopolar radiofrequency (RF) device using single microneedle with proximal insulation. The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of intralesional electrothermolysis using monopolar RF device and proximally-insulated single microneedle in acne patients. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: The prospective randomized controlled clinical trial was performed to treat moderate-to-severe facial acne. Subjects randomized to the treatment group received three treatments at 4-week intervals with an RF device, whereas the control group received micro-needling and extraction. For efficacy evaluation, reduction rate of acne lesions were evaluated by two independent physicians. RESULTS: Sixty-three patients completed the study and the results showed statistically significant improvement of inflammatory acne at 12 weeks. The number of inflammatory lesions was significantly reduced at 12 weeks (20.86 vs. -5.13; P = 0.03) compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS: Selective sebaceous gland electrothermolysis can be a safe and effective method of achieving consistent improvement in acne. Lasers Surg. Med. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Background and Objectives: Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) guidance is the current gold standard for catheter-based procedures in the treatment of structural heart diseases. Intracardiac echocardiography (ICE), which can be performed under local anesthesia, has been recently introduced and is becoming more widely used. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of ICE and TEE in patent foramen ovale (PFO) device closure. Materials and Methods: All 74 patients with a history of cryptogenic stroke undergoing PFO closure for secondary prophylaxis were selected from our registry. Intraprocedural TEE was performed by echocardiographer-cardiologists with the patient under general anesthesia. Conversely, ICE was performed with the patient under local anesthesia. Baseline characteristics, procedural details, and immediate outcomes were compared between the TEE and ICE groups (n = 49 and n = 25, respectively). Results: Although patients in the ICE group were older (47 ± 10 vs. 57 ± 7 years, p < 0.001), sex and comorbidity variables were similar between the two groups. The degree of inducible right-to-left shunt via the PFO, assessed using preprocedural TEE, was also comparable. Notably, fluoroscopy time (22 ± 18 vs. 16 ± 7 min, p = 0.030), radiation dose (498 ± 880 vs. 196 ± 111 mGy, p = 0.022), and total procedural time in the catheter laboratory (99 ± 30 vs. 67 ± 12 min, p < 0.001) were significantly lower in the ICE group than those in the TEE group. The entire hospital stay was similar between groups (3.8 ± 2.2 vs. 3.4 ± 1.3 days, p = 0.433). No procedural complications, such as device embolization, pericardial hemorrhage, major bleeding, mortality, or access-related vascular injury were reported in either group. Conclusions: ICE-guided PFO device closure is quicker and less hazardous in terms of radiation exposure than the TEE-guided procedure, with similar procedural outcomes and duration of hospital stay.

TATA-binding protein-associated factors (TAFs) are general transcription factors within the transcription factor IID (TFIID) complex, which recognizes the core promoter of genes. In addition to their biochemical function, it is known that several TAFs are involved in the regulation of developmental processes. In this study, we found that TAF15b affects flowering time, especially through the autonomous pathway (AP) in Arabidopsis. The mutant taf15b shows late flowering compared with the wild type plant during both long and short days, and vernalization accelerates the flowering time of taf15b. In addition, taf15b shows strong upregulation of FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC), a flowering repressor in Arabidopsis, and the flc taf15b double mutant completely offsets the late flowering of taf15b, indicating that TAF15b is a typical AP gene. The taf15b mutant also shows increased transcript levels of COOLAIR, an antisense transcript of FLC. Consistently, chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) analyses showed that the TAF15b protein is enriched around both sense and antisense transcription start sites of the FLC locus. In addition, co-immunoprecipitation showed that TAF15b interacts with RNA polymerase II (Pol II), while ChIP showed increased enrichment of the phosphorylated forms, both serine 2 (Ser2) and Ser5, of the C-terminal domain of Pol II at the FLC locus, which is indicative of transcriptional elongation. Finally, taf15b showed higher enrichment of the active histone marker, H3K4me3, on FLC chromatin. Taken together, our results suggest that TAF15b affects flowering time through transcriptional repression of FLC in Arabidopsis.

Although the importance of chloroplast RNA splicing and ribosome maturation (CRM) domain-containing proteins has been established for chloroplast RNA metabolism and plant development, the functional role of CRM proteins in mitochondria remains largely unknown. Here, we investigated the role of a mitochondria-targeted CRM protein (At3g27550), named CFM9, in Arabidopsis thaliana. Confocal analysis revealed that CFM9 is localized in mitochondria. The cfm9 mutant exhibited delayed seed germination, retarded growth and shorter height compared with the wild type under normal conditions. The growth-defect phenotypes were more manifested upon high salinity, dehydration or ABA application. Complementation lines expressing CFM9 in the mutant background fully recovered the wild-type phenotypes. Notably, the mutant had abnormal mitochondria, increased hydrogen peroxide and reduced respiration activity, implying that CFM9 is indispensable for normal mitochondrial function. More important, the splicing of many intron-containing genes in mitochondria was defective in the mutant, suggesting that CFM9 plays a crucial role in the splicing of mitochondrial introns. Collectively, our results provide clear evidence emphasizing that CFM9 is an essential factor in the splicing of mitochondrial introns, which is crucial for mitochondrial biogenesis and function and the growth and development of Arabidopsis.

BACKGROUND: Even though the roles of pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) proteins are essential in plant organelles, the function of many chloroplast-targeted PPR proteins remains unknown. Here, we characterized the function of a chloroplast-localized PPR protein (At3g59040), which is classified as the 287th PPR protein among the 450 PPR proteins in Arabidopsis ( http://ppr.plantenergy.uwa.edu.au ). RESULTS: The homozygous ppr287 mutant with the T-DNA inserted into the last exon displayed pale-green and yellowish phenotypes. The microRNA-mediated knockdown mutants were generated to further confirm the developmental defect phenotypes of ppr287 mutants. All mutants had yellowish leaves, shorter roots and height, and less seed yield, indicating that PPR287 is crucial for normal Arabidopsis growth and development. The photosynthetic activity and chlorophyll content of ppr287 mutants were markedly reduced, and the chloroplast structures of the mutants were abnormal. The levels of chloroplast rRNAs were decreased in ppr287 mutants. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that PPR287 plays an essential role in chloroplast biogenesis and function, which is crucial for the normal growth and development of Arabidopsis.

Ferroptosis is the non-apoptotic form of cell death caused by small molecules or conditions that inhibit glutathione biosynthesis or resulting in iron-dependent accumulation of lipid peroxidation by lipid reactive oxygen species (ROS). Sestrin2 (Sesn2), a conserved antioxidant protein, is responsive to various stresses including genotoxic, metabolic, and oxidative stresses and acts to restore homeostatic balance. Sesn2 expression was reported to be regulated via stress-responsive transcription factors including p53, Nrf2, and HIF-1α. However, the role of Sesn2 in regulating ferroptosis is not known. In the current study, we investigated whether ferroptosis inducing compounds including erastin, sorafenib, and buthionine sulfoximine affect Sesn2 expression and the role of Sesn2 in cytoprotection against ferroptosis-mediated cell death. Our data demonstrate that ferroptosis inducers significantly increased Sesn2 in hepatocytes in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Treatment with erastin upregulated Sesn2 mRNA levels and luciferase reporter gene activity, and erastin-mediated Sesn2 induction was transcriptionally regulated by NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). Furthermore, deletion of the antioxidant response element (ARE) in the Sesn2 promoter or Nrf2 knockout or knockdown abolished erastin-induced Sesn2 expression. In cells expressing Sesn2, erastin-induced cell death, ROS formation, and glutathione depletion were almost completely inhibited compared to that in control cells. Treatment with phenylhydrazine in mice, well-reported iron overload liver injury model, increased ALT and AST levels and altered histological features, which were almost completely inhibited by adenoviral Sesn2 infection. Collectively, our results suggest that ferroptosis-mediated Sesn2 induction is dependent on Nrf2 and plays a protective role against iron overload and ferroptosis-induced liver injury.

Fordyce spots are ectopic sebaceous glands which typically present as asymptomatic, multiple whitish, or yellowish 1-3-mm sized papules on the lips. Several therapeutic approaches have been proposed such as laser, electrical or chemical ablation, and micropunch excision. However, these modalities pose the risk of scarring from inevitable surface damage. In this report, we present a case of Fordyce spots which was successfully treated with intralesional electrocoagulation using a proximally insulated microneedle and monopolar radiofrequency device, resulting in marked cosmetic improvements without surface damage.

Although we recently demonstrated that static magnetic fields (SMFs) of 3, 15, and 50 mT stimulate osteoblastic differentiation, the effects of SMFs on osteoclastogenesis are still poorly understood. This study focused on the suppressive effects of SMFs on receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption. Direct SMFs inhibit RANKL-induced multinucleated osteoclast formation, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase activity, and bone resorption in mouse bone marrow-derived macrophage cells. The conditioned medium from osteoblasts treated with SMFs also resulted in the inhibition of osteoclast differentiation as well as resorption. The RANKL-induced expression of osteoclast-specific transcription factors, such as c-Fos and NFATc1, was remarkably downregulated by SMF at 15 mT. In addition, SMF inhibited RANKL-activated Akt, glycogen synthase kinase 3ß (GSK3ß), extracellular signal-regulated kinase, c-jun N-terminal protein kinase, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) formation. These findings indicate that SMF-mediated attenuation of RANKL-induced Akt, GSK3ß, MAPK, and NF-κB pathways could contribute to the direct and indirect inhibition of osteoclast formation and bone resorption. Therefore, SMFs could be developed as a therapeutic agent against periprosthetic or peri-implant osteolysis.
