RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to compare the hyperemic myocardial blood flow (MBF) and myocardial flow reserve (MFR) obtained with dobutamine to those of dipyridamole in patients referred for myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) using 82Rb positron emission tomography. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-six patients who underwent a 82Rb PET MPI study with dobutamine stress were included. A matching cohort of patients who underwent a 82Rb PET MPI study with dipyridamole stress was created, accounting for sex, age, history of coronary artery disease (CAD), prior revascularization, CAD risk factors, body mass index, and MPI interpretation. RESULTS: Global rest MBF (median [interquartile range] 0.84 [0.64-1.00] vs 0.69 [0.59-0.85]), stress MBF (2.36 [1.73-3.08] vs 1.66 [1.25-2.06]), MFR (2.75 [2.19-3.64] vs 2.29 [1.78-2.84]), and corrected MFR (2.85 [2.14-3.64] vs 2.20 [1.65-2.75]) were all significantly higher (P < 0.0001) in the dobutamine cohort compared to the dipyridamole cohort. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that dobutamine produces higher MBF compared to dipyridamole in a representative population referred to nuclear cardiology laboratories.

RESUMO

Here, we present a controlled synthesis of Mn-doped ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) with predominantly nail-like shapes, whose formation occurs via tip-to-base-oriented attachment of initially formed nanopyramids, followed by leveling of sharp edges that lead to smooth single-crystalline "nails". This shape is prevalent in noncoordinating solvents such as octadecene and octadecane. Yet, the double bond in the former promotes oriented attachment. By contrast, Mn-doped ZnO NP synthesis in a weakly coordinating solvent, benzyl ether, results in dendritic structures because of random attachment of initial NPs. Mn-doped ZnO NPs possess a hexagonal wurtzite structure, and in the majority of cases, the NP surface is enriched with Mn, indicating a migration of Mn2+ ions to the NP surface during the NP formation. When the NP formation is carried out without the addition of octadecyl alcohol, which serves as a surfactant and a reaction initiator, large, concave pyramid dimers are formed whose attachment takes place via basal planes. UV-vis and photoluminescence spectra of these NPs confirm the utility of controlling the NP shape to tune electro-optical properties.

RESUMO

Polymeric materials that undergo photoinduced degradation have wide application in fields such as controlled release. Most methods for photoinduced degradation rely on the UV or near-UV region of the electromagnetic spectrum; however, use of the deeply penetrating and benign wavelengths of visible light offers a multitude of advantages. Here we report a lactone monomer for ring-opening copolymerizations to introduce a sacrificial linker into a polymer backbone which can be cleaved by reactive oxygen species which are produced by a photocatalyst under visible light irradiation. We find that copolymers of this material readily degrade under visible light. We followed polymer degradation using a continuous flow size exclusion chromatography system, the components of which are described herein.

RESUMO

The risks to aquatic wildlife from spills of diluted bitumen (dilbit) into inland waters are poorly understood. In this paper, we describe the response of larval wood frogs (Rana sylvatica) to hydrocarbons and other compounds released from experimental spills of dilbit in a temperate boreal lake. To simulate a wide range of environmentally relevant oil spill scenarios, different volumes of Cold Lake Winter Blend dilbit (0, 1.5, 2.9, 5.5, 18, 42, 82, and 180 L) were added to 10 m diameter in-lake limnocorrals. Larvae (n = 360) were reared (from Gosner Stage (GS) 25 to ∼42) in land-based aquatic microcosms, where they were first exposed to clean water during a 2-week baseline phase, and then (at GS ∼30), to contaminated water withdrawn from the limnocorrals for 3 weeks. We observed no statistically significant trends in survival, growth, or development of larvae as a consequence of exposure to the chemical compounds released from naturally weathered dilbit. Likewise, neither cytochrome P450 1A biomarkers nor levels of thyroid hormones in wood frogs near metamorphic climax were significantly related to volume of the oil spills. However, there was a modest statistically significant decrease in larval activity (up to 8.7% relative to the control), but no change in other behavioral metrics (i.e., sociality or space use). Our work adds to the limited body of literature on the effects of unconventional oils on aquatic wildlife and helps to inform risk assessments regarding pipeline projects.

RESUMO

The datasets in this work contain the experimentally measured (real) refractive indices, optical transmission intensity, and optical absorption spectra of bifunctional urethane methacrylate perfluoropolyether (PFPE; Fluorolink® MD700) substrate of (0.98 ± 0.13) mm thickness and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF; Kynar® 705) thin-film of (4.47 ± 0.29) µm thickness over a spectral range from 300 nm to 1000 nm, as measured via variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry. The refractive indices data were determined by employing a single Cauchy optical constants function based layer using a Levenberg-Marquardt multi-iterative regression algorithm for all model minimizations. The mean-squared error (MSE) was used as the maximum likelihood estimator, with a convergence of the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm reached when successive iterations were unable to improve the MSE. The resulting best-fit parameter values were evaluated for sensitivity (expressed as a confidence limit), and possible correlations. Furthermore, the experimentally measured optical transmission intensity and determined optical absorption of PFPE and PVDF, over a spectral range from 300 nm to 1000 nm, is also presented, as measured via ellipsometry and corrected using Fresnel equations to accommodate surface interference. Given the high transmission of (88.4 ± 0.5)% for PFPE and (95.6 ± 0.6) % for PVDF found, and the low refractive index 1.27 (λ = 589.3 nm) found for PFPE; it is thought that these datasets may be useful for optical applications, such as for photo-curable synthesis processes, or being used as a host-matrix material for photoluminescent compounds.

RESUMO

Large-scale, in-lake enclosures (limnocorrals) were used to simulate spills of diluted bitumen (dilbit) in a boreal lake. In this study we use these simulated spills, which covered a range of sizes (oil:water ratio) representative of the upper 25% of onshore crude oil spills in North America (2008-2019), to assess the fate of dilbit-derived hydrocarbons and metals as well as the impacts of the spills on standard water quality parameters. The systems were monitored over 70 days following the application of dilbit amounts ranging between 1.5 and 179.8 L into 10-m diameter, ~100 m3 limnocorrals. The concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in the water column increased rapidly over the first two weeks reaching a plateau that ranged between 200 µg/L and 2200 µg/L for the lowest and highest treatment respectively. The concentration of total polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) also increased over the first two weeks, prior to a slow decrease until day 70. The maximum measured concentrations in the highest treatment were 2858 ng/L for the sum of all 46 quantified PACs, 2716 ng/L for alkylated PACs and 154 ng/L for the 16 EPA priority PAHs. The concentrations of PACs in the sediment increased continuously over the study in the three highest treatments with maximum observed concentrations of 189 ng/g for ΣPAC46, 169 ng/g for ΣPACalk. No significant treatment-related changes in the 16 EPA priority PAHs were observed in the sediment. Of the 25 metals quantified in the water column, only manganese, molybdenum, and vanadium displayed a significant treatment effect with increases of 280, 76 and 25% respectively in the total fraction. These results can help us understand and predict the fate of oil-derived contaminants following a spill and characterize the exposure of freshwater organisms living within them. These results should help inform the risk assessment of future dilbit transportation projects.
