RESUMO

Both concentrations and emissions of many air pollutants have been decreasing due to implement of control measures in China, in contrast to the fact that an increase in emissions of non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) has been reported. This study employed seven years continuous NMHCs measurements and the related activities data of Shanghai, a megacity in China, to explore evolution of emissions and effectiveness of air pollution control measures. The mixing ratio of NMHCs showed no statistical interannual changes, of which their compositions exhibited marked changes. This resulted in a decreasing trend of ozone formation potential by 3.8%/year (p < 0.05, the same below), which should be beneficial to ozone pollution mitigation as its production in Shanghai is in the NMHCs-limited regime. Observed alkanes, aromatics and acetylene changed by +3.7%/year, -5.9%/year and -7.4%/year, respectively, and alkenes showed no apparent trend. NMHCs sources were apportioned by a positive matrix factorization model. Accordingly, vehicular emissions (-5.9%/year) and petrochemical industry emissions (-7.1%/year) decreased significantly, but the decrease slowed down; significant reduction in solvent usage (-9.0%/year) appeared after 2010; however, emissions of natural gas (+12.6%/year) and fuel evaporation (with an increasing fraction) became more important. The inconsistency between observations and inventories was found in interannual trend and speciation as well as source contributions, emphasizing the need for further validation in NMHCs emission inventory. Our study confirms the effectiveness of measures targeting mobile and centralized emissions from industrial sources and reveals a need focusing on fugitive emissions, which provided new insights into future air policies in polluted region.

RESUMO

The production of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) from toluene photochemistry in Shanghai, a megacity of China, was estimated by two approaches, the parametrization method and the tracer-based method. The temporal profiles of toluene, together with other fifty-six volatile organic compounds (VOCs), were characterized. Combing with the vapor wall loss corrected SOA yields derived from chamber experiments, the estimated toluene SOA by the parametrization method as embodied in the two-product model contributes up to ∼40% of the total SOA budget during summertime. 2,3-Dihydroxy-4-oxopentanoic acid (DHOPA), a unique product from the OH-initiated oxidation of toluene in the presence of elevated NOx, was used as a tracer to back calculate the toluene SOA concentrations. By taking account for the effect of gas-particle partitioning processes on the fraction of DHOPA in the particle phase, the estimated toluene SOA concentrations agree within ∼33% with the estimates by the parametrization method. The agreement between these two independent approaches highlight the need to update current model frameworks with recent laboratory advances for a more accurate representation of SOA formation in regions with substantial anthropogenic emissions.

RESUMO

Salt-storage additives (SSAs) were added to the asphalt mixtures during the construction stage, and the formed anti-icing asphalt pavement (AIAP) played an active and smart role in continuous snow melting, which could avoid traffic accidents and provide positive support for winter road maintenance in cold areas. In this study, a novel and economical green sustained-release microcapsule salt-storage anti-icing agent was prepared by using solid waste porous sustained-release skeleton loading organic acetate salt as the core material and styrene-acrylic-acrylate copolymer P(AA-MA-BA-St) as the wall material, which have less corrosiveness and extended the release time. By comparing the physical properties of different solid waste porous carriers and corrosion inhibitors, the blast furnace slag and NaHCO3 were selected as the sustained-release skeleton and corrosion inhibitors. The optimal conditions of the synthesis of vesicle wall materials were investigated: 3.8 wt % acrylic acid polymerized at 110 °C with 3 wt % AIBN and for 3.5 h, and the relative ice-snow melting capacity of the prepared sustained-release microcapsule-type anti-icing agent (SMAA) product was 90.8%. The best proportion of the SMAA used to replace a part of the equal mass of mineral powder in the SMA-13 asphalt mixtures was 5.5 wt %, and it could satisfy the requirements of road performance. Moreover, we applied the SMAA product to the 5 cm thick surface layer of SMA-13 of the section K64 + 992 ∼ K65 + 193.641 over the main line ramp at the Sizhuang Toll Station of Beijing-Xiong'an highways to construct AIAP. Compared with adjacent sections of the road without SMAA in winter snowfall, the pilot test section has a very good melting effect. This study contributes to the development of long-acting environment-friendly materials for SSAs to reduce the cost of winter road maintenance, and the obtained product has very promising prospects for practical applications.

RESUMO

Low-visibility events (LVEs) are severe weather phenomena that are closely linked with anthropogenic pollution, which negatively affects traffic, air quality, human health, and the environment. This study conducted a two-month (from October to December 2019) continuous measurement campaign on Chongming Island in Shanghai to characterize the LVEs transition and its drivers. The LVEs accounted for 38% of the time during the campaign, of which mist accounted for 14%, fog-haze for 13%, haze for 6%, and fog for 5%. The fog and mist mainly occurred from midnight to early morning, while haze mostly occurred during the daytime. Different LVEs were interdependent and transitioned from one to another. Fog generally turned into haze after sunrise, while haze turned into fog after sunset. Their formation and evolution were caused by the combined impacts of meteorological conditions and aerosol particles. It was found that temperature difference was the dominant meteorological factor driving the evolution of LVEs. Within the short term, cooling led to a greater increase in relative humidity than humidification. Radiative cooling during the night promoted the formation of fog and mist. During fog and mist events, cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) were mainly internally mixed due to the impact of fog droplet removal and aqueous/heterogeneous aerosol reactions occurring under high humidity. Increased CCN concentration appeared to increase the fog droplet number and liquid water content in fog events. Overall, conditions of high humidity and high particle loading were conducive to LVEs, whereas conditions of sufficient water vapor at a low particle level and sufficient particles at a low humidity level also caused LVEs. This study provided insights into LVEs classification, evolution scheme, and aerosol roles from a micro point of view. The findings could be useful for improving forecasts of local radiative fog and other LVEs.

RESUMO

To investigate the effects of shipping aerosols on radiation, cloud physical properties, and near-surface PM2.5, four sensitive experiments with the WRF-Chem model were performed over coastal areas near Shanghai for July 2014. In general, the direct effect of shipping aerosols resulted in negative shortwave (SW) radiation forcing at the land surface. However, when considering the indirect effect, the downward SW radiation at the sea surface declined significantly. By the direct effect, shipping aerosols could modify cloud structure, resulting in a higher cloud base, lower cloud top, and shallower cloud depth. With the indirect effect included, both the cloud base and cloud top showed a declining trend over sea areas. The indirect effect of shipping aerosols was relatively more significant in influencing clouds. For example, the results revealed a 1.2% change of low cloud coverage from the indirect effect but only a 0.1% change due to the direct effect. Through their direct and indirect effects, shipping aerosols cause non-negligible impacts on precipitation, which are concentrated within light precipitation (<0.1 mm h-1). Finally, we concluded that after considering the shipping aerosols, the peak of the cloud droplet spectrum increases by about 50 cm-3/µm. It can be found that when the average volume radius of the cloud droplet is less than 2 µm, the number concentration of cloud droplets increases sharply, and when the average radius of the cloud drop is greater than 2 µm and less than 5 µm, the cloud droplet number concentration drops sharply.

RESUMO

The ambient concentration of 122 volatile organic compound (VOC) species were continuously measured in urban Hangzhou, China from May 2018 to April 2019. The average mixing ratio of VOCs was (59.4±23.6)×10-9 and the oxygenated VOCs (OVOC) were the largest component. There was no clear "weekend effect" in urban Hangzhou, while the concentration of VOCs had a sharp decrease during long holidays. The concentration of VOCs had a positive correlation with air quality index (AQI) and reached the highest level when the primary pollutant was PM2.5. The assessment results of atmospheric chemical reactivity with·OH radical loss rate (L·OH) and ozone formation potential (OFP) showed the average value of L·OH was 7.5 s-1 and that of OFP was 152.1×10-9, among which carbonyl compounds, aromatics, and alkenes were the most abundant components. The overall chemical reactivity level of VOCs in Hangzhou was equivalent to 2-methylpentane. The average value of toluene/benzene (T/B) was 1.95, which implied the ambient VOCs in Hangzhou were influenced by vehicle exhaust. Secondary formation (17.6%), combustion (11.8%), industrial processing (12.3%), solvent use (18.1%), biogenic source (4.5%), and vehicle exhaust (35.7%) were identified as six major sources of VOCs in Hangzhou through the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model.

RESUMO

An intensive observation of ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was carried out in Hangzhou, a key city in the Yangtze River Delta, during a typical photochemical pollution episode from September 14-23, 2018. The analysis results of 80 effective samples showed that the average concentration of 122 compounds of VOCs was (59.5±19.8)×10-9 during the observation period, and oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) were the most abundant component. The assessment results of atmospheric reaction activity with ozone formation potential (OFP) showed that the average value of OFP was 145×10-9 during the observation period, of which alkenes and carbonyl compounds were the most abundant components. The chemical reactivity of VOCs in Hangzhou was equivalent to acrylonitrile. Based on the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, five major sources of VOCs in Hangzhou were identified, including secondary formation (25.2%), combustion and industrial processing (27.2%), solvent use (17.3%), biogenic sources (9.2%), and vehicular exhaust (21.2%). The results can provide guidance for further understanding of VOC characteristics and the basis for scientific prevention and control measures in Hangzhou.

RESUMO

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) do great harm to human health, and also have some impact on air quality. Cooking is one of the important sources of VOCs, so the study of cooking emissions is of great significance. By simulating the heating of oil and cooking, the characteristics and chemical composition of VOCs emissions for different types of oil fumes were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), using different oils, seasonings, and dishes as variables. The results show that the emission factors of the oils range from 0.81 to 2.53 g·kg-1, and the emissions are dominated by halogenated hydrocarbons and alkanes. The emission factors of the seasonings range from 25.06 to 40.18 g·kg-1, and the seasonings mainly emit alkanes. The quantity of emissions from chili fried meat is much higher than that of tomato scrambled eggs, and the chili fried meat mainly emits halogenated hydrocarbons, while tomato scrambled eggs mainly emit aromatic hydrocarbons and alkanes.
