Although the activator protein-1 (AP-1) factor Batf is required for Th17 cell development, its mechanisms of action to underpin the Th17 program are incompletely understood. Here, we find that Batf ensures Th17 cell identity in part by restricting alternative gene programs through its actions to restrain IL-2 expression and IL-2-induced Stat5 activation. This, in turn, limits Stat5-dependent recruitment of Ets1-Runx1 factors to Th1- and Treg-cell-specific gene loci. Thus, in addition to pioneering regulatory elements in Th17-specific loci, Batf acts indirectly to inhibit the assembly of a Stat5-Ets1-Runx1 complex that enhances the transcription of Th1- and Treg-cell-specific genes. These findings unveil an important role for Stat5-Ets1-Runx1 interactions in transcriptional networks that define alternate T cell fates and indicate that Batf plays an indispensable role in both inducing and maintaining the Th17 program through its actions to regulate the competing actions of Stat5-assembled enhanceosomes that promote Th1- and Treg-cell developmental programs.

Tubulins are essential for the reproduction of many eukaryotic viruses, but historically, bacteriophage were assumed not to require a cytoskeleton. Here, we identify a tubulin-like protein, PhuZ, from bacteriophage 201φ2-1 and show that it forms filaments in vivo and in vitro. The PhuZ structure has a conserved tubulin fold, with an unusual, extended C terminus that we demonstrate to be critical for polymerization in vitro and in vivo. Longitudinal packing in the crystal lattice mimics packing observed by EM of in-vitro-formed filaments, indicating how interactions between the C terminus and the following monomer drive polymerization. PhuZ forms a filamentous array that is required for positioning phage DNA within the bacterial cell. Correct positioning to the cell center and optimal phage reproduction only occur when the PhuZ filament is dynamic. Thus, we show that PhuZ assembles a spindle-like array that functions analogously to the microtubule-based spindles of eukaryotes.

Methods for cell clustering and gene expression from single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data are essential for biological interpretation of cell processes. Here, we present TRIAGE-Cluster which uses genome-wide epigenetic data from diverse bio-samples to identify genes demarcating cell diversity in scRNA-seq data. By integrating patterns of repressive chromatin deposited across diverse cell types with weighted density estimation, TRIAGE-Cluster determines cell type clusters in a 2D UMAP space. We then present TRIAGE-ParseR, a machine learning method which evaluates gene expression rank lists to define gene groups governing the identity and function of cell types. We demonstrate the utility of this two-step approach using atlases of in vivo and in vitro cell diversification and organogenesis. We also provide a web accessible dashboard for analysis and download of data and software. Collectively, genome-wide epigenetic repression provides a versatile strategy to define cell diversity and study gene regulation of scRNA-seq data.

Most polygenic risk score (PRS)models have been based on data from populations of European origins (accounting for the majority of the large genomics datasets, e.g. >78% in the UK Biobank and >85% in the GTEx project). Although several large-scale Asian biobanks were initiated (e.g. Japanese, Korean, Han Chinese biobanks), most other Asian countries have little or near-zero genomics data. To implement PRS models for under-represented populations, we explored transfer learning approaches, assuming that information from existing large datasets can compensate for the small sample size that can be feasibly obtained in developing countries, like Vietnam. Here, we benchmark 13 common PRS methods in meta-population strategy (combining individual genotype data from multiple populations) and multi-population strategy (combining summary statistics from multiple populations). Our results highlight the complementarity of different populations and the choice of methods should depend on the target population. Based on these results, we discussed a set of guidelines to help users select the best method for their datasets. We developed a robust and comprehensive software to allow for benchmarking comparisons between methods and proposed a computational framework for improving PRS performance in a dataset with a small sample size. MOTIVATION: statistics from genome-wide association studies enable many valuable downstream analyses that are more efficient than individual-level data analysis while also reducing privacy concerns. As growing sample sizes enable better-powered analysis of gene-environment interactions, there is a need for gene-environment interaction-specific methods that manipulate and use summary statistics. RESULTS: We introduce two tools to facilitate such analysis, with a focus on statistical models containing multiple gene-exposure and/or gene-covariate interaction terms. REGEM (RE-analysis of GEM summary statistics) uses summary statistics from a single, multi-exposure genome-wide interaction study to derive analogous sets of summary statistics with arbitrary sets of exposures and interaction covariate adjustments. METAGEM (META-analysis of GEM summary statistics) extends current fixed-effects meta-analysis models to incorporate multiple exposures from multiple studies. We demonstrate the value and efficiency of these tools by exploring alternative methods of accounting for ancestry-related population stratification in genome-wide interaction study in the UK Biobank as well as by conducting a multi-exposure genome-wide interaction study meta-analysis in cohorts from the diabetes-focused ProDiGY consortium. These programs help to maximize the value of summary statistics from diverse and complex gene-environment interaction studies. INTRODUCTION: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is characterized by an impaired epidermal barrier, which could be associated with sensitization to food allergens (FAs) and/or inhaled allergens and contribute to the severity of AD. However, no clinical guidance has been established for evaluations of food sensitization (FS) in AD patients. This study investigated how AD severity and epidermal barrier impairment are associated with FS and factors that can predict FS in children with AD. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 100 children (12-60 months) diagnosed with AD. AD severity was determined using the Scoring Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) index. FS was evaluated by measuring serum-specific IgE antibodies against 31 FAs using an immunoblotting method. Epidermal barrier impairment was assessed by measuring transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and stratum corneum hydration (SCH) levels. RESULTS: 90% of participants were sensitized to at least one tested FA, with cow's milk, egg white, beef, almond, egg yolk, and peanut being the most common. Children with moderate-severe AD had lower SCH levels than those with mild AD. Children with AD who were sensitized to >10 FAs had significantly higher TEWL and lower SCH levels, compared with those sensitized to 1-4 FAs and 5-10 FAs. The SCORAD score and SCH level in lesional skin provided moderately predictive value for sensitization to FAs in children with AD. CONCLUSION: FS is common in children with AD and closely associate with AD severity as well as epidermal barrier impairment. Evaluations of FS should be considered for children with moderate to severe AD and/or low SCH levels.

INTRODUCTION: The radio-surgical literature increasingly uses biological effective dose (BED) as a replacement for absorbed dose to analyze outcome of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). There are as yet no studies which specifically investigate the association of BED to local tumor control in para-sellar meningioma. METHODS: we did a retrospective analysis of patients underwent stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for para-sellar meningioma during the period of 1995-2022. Demographic, clinical, SRS parameters, and outcome data were collected. The target margin BED with and without a model for sub-lethal repair was calculated, as well as a ratio of BED at the target margin to the absorbed dose at the target margin. Factors related to local control were further analyzed. RESULTS: The study was comprised of 91 patients, 20 (22.0%) and 71 (78.0%) of whom were male and female, respectively. The median age was 55.0 (interquartile range Q1, Q3:47.5,65.5years). 34 (37%) patients had a resection of their meningioma prior to SRS. The median interval from SRS to last clinical follow up or progression was 89 months. 13 (14.3%) patients were found to have progression. 3-, 5- and 10-years local tumor control were 98%, 92% and 77%, respectively. In cox univariate analysis, the following factors were significant: Number of prior surgical resections (Hazard Ratio [HR] = 1.82, 95% CI = 1.08-3.05, p = 0.024), BED (HR = 0.96, 95% CI = 0.92-1.00, p = 0.03), and BED/margin (HR = 0.44, 95% CI = 0.21-0.92, p = 0.028). A BED threshold above 68 Gy was associated significantly with tumor control (P = 0.04). CONCLUSION: BED and BED /margin absorbed dose ratio can be predictors of local control after SRS in parasellar meningioma. Optimizing the BED above 68Gy2.47 may afford better long-term tumor control.

PURPOSE: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is frequently used in the management of brain metastasis patients. However, there is an urgent need to evaluate post-treatment outcomes and quality of life metrics for patients undergoing SRS for brain metastases. METHODS: The NeuroPoint Alliance (NPA) SRS Quality Registry conducted prospective enrollment of patients undergoing SRS from 2017 to 2024. Patients with brain metastases from lung cancer, breast cancer, and melanoma were included in the analysis. Outcomes of interest included quality of life metrics, as captured by the five-dimension Euro-QOL (EQ-5D) at 6-12 months and last record follow-up, overall survival, local progression, out-of-field progression, and overall intracranial progression. RESULTS: 522 patients comprised our analytic cohort, and 315 patients had available EQ-5D data at the time of SRS and final follow-up. 264 (47.8%), 197 (35.7%), and 91 (16.5%) patients had 1, 2-4, and 5-14 lesions pre-SRS, respectively. The median overall survival time from diagnosis was 27.3 months. The median time-to-local progression was not reached. At final follow-up, 107 (34.0%) patients had improvement, 51 (16.2%) patients had stable, and 113 patients (35.9%) had worsening EQ-5D scores when compared to baseline. For 44 (13.9%) patients mixed responses across the EQ-5D indices were reported. Linear regression analysis showed that male sex, smoking status, primary tumor type, time-to-overall progression, cumulative intracranial tumor volume (CITV), and baseline EQ-5D were statistically significantly associated with EQ-5D single index at the final follow-up. CONCLUSION: Real-world data from the SRS NPA Registry demonstrated that most patients with brain metastasis had no change or improvement in quality of life after SRS. Baseline EQ-5D was predictive of EQ-5D single index at final follow-up, and, as such, EQ-5D at baseline would be a valuable assessment measure for brain metastasis patients undergoing SRS.

OBJECTIVES: In 2018, approximately 2.3 million children in the United States had unmet healthcare needs (UHCN). To date, studies examining associations between UHCN and parent stress and support have had limited generalizability. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between children's UHCN and parenting stress and support using a nationally representative sample. Additionally, this study aimed to assess associations between unmet mental health needs and these parental well-being measures. METHODS: Households with children ages 0-17 and complete data on UHCN in the combined 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 cohorts of the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) met inclusion criteria. Logistic regressions were used to evaluate associations between overall UHCN and outcome measures of parental coping, aggravation, emotional support, and neighborhood support. Associations between mental UHCN and these outcome measures were analyzed in a subset limited to children with mental health conditions. Regressions were adjusted for potential confounders, including demographics, household income, medical home status, and health insurance (adequacy/type). RESULTS: In our sample of 131,299 children, overall UHCN were associated with poorer parental coping (aOR = 5.35, 95% CI: [3.60, 7.95]), greater parental aggravation (aOR = 3.35, 95% CI: [2.73, 4.12]), and non-supportive neighborhood (aOR = 2.22, 95% CI: [1.86, 2.65]). Mental UHCN were similarly associated with parental coping and aggravation and neighborhood support in the mental health subset. CONCLUSIONS FOR PRACTICE: Healthcare professionals must address the needs of children with UHCN and collaborate with community organizations and child advocates to promote coordinated and comprehensive care and adequately support caregivers.

The adsorption mechanism of S-Metolachlor in an aqueous solution by sawdust biochar derived from Acacia auriculiformis (SAB) was studied. SAB was manufactured at 500 °C for 4 h under oxygen-limited conditions and characterized for SEM, EDS, pHpzc, BET, and FTIR. The adsorption kinetics, isotherm, and diffusion studies of S-Metolachlor and SAB were further explored. Moreover, the effects of the solution pH were examined on the adsorption of S-Metolachlor by SAB. The BET analysis of SAB was achieved at 106.74 m2.g-1 and the solution pH did not significantly influence the S-Metolachlor adsorption. The adsorption data were fitted into a Langmuir isotherm and the PSO model. The film diffusion coefficient Df (4.93 × 10-11 to 8.17 × 10-11 m2.s-1) and the particle diffusion coefficient Dp (1.68 × 10-11 to 2.65 × 10-11 m2.s-1) were determined and the rate-limiting step of S-Metolachlor adsorption and SAB was governed by liquid film diffusion. The S-Metolachlor adsorption process onto SAB was controlled by multiple mechanisms, including pore filling, H-bonding, hydrophobic interaction, and π-π EDA interactions. H-bonding is the main interaction for the adsorption of S-Metolachlor and SAB. Conclusively, the study illustrates that biochar produced from Acacia auriculiformis sawdust possessed effective adsorption properties for S-Metolachlor herbicide.

The challenge of wound healing, particularly in patients with comorbidities such as diabetes, is intensified by wound infection and the accelerating problem of bacterial resistance to current remedies such as antibiotics and silver. One promising approach harnesses the bioactive and antibacterial compound C-phycocyanin from the microalga Spirulina maxima. However, the current processes of extracting this compound and developing coatings are unsustainable and difficult to achieve. To circumvent these obstacles, a novel, sustainable argon atmospheric plasma jet (Ar-APJ) technology that transforms S. maxima biomass into bioactive coatings is presented. This Ar-APJ can selectively disrupt the cell walls of S. maxima, converting them into bioactive ultrathin coatings, which are found to be durable under aqueous conditions. The findings demonstrate that Ar-APJ-transformed bioactive coatings show better antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Moreover, these coatings exhibit compatibility with macrophages, induce an anti-inflammatory response by reducing interleukin 6 production, and promote cell migration in keratinocytes. This study offers an innovative, single-step, sustainable technology for transforming microalgae into bioactive coatings. The approach reported here has immense potential for the generation of bioactive coatings for combating wound infections and may offer a significant advance in wound care research and application.

MOTIVATION: Gene-environment interaction (GEI) studies are a general framework that can be used to identify genetic variants that modify the effects of environmental, physiological, lifestyle or treatment effects on complex traits. Moreover, accounting for GEIs can enhance our understanding of the genetic architecture of complex diseases and traits. However, commonly used statistical software programs for GEI studies are either not applicable to testing certain types of GEI hypotheses or have not been optimized for use in large samples. RESULTS: Here, we develop a new software program, GEM (Gene-Environment interaction analysis in Millions of samples), which supports the inclusion of multiple GEI terms, adjustment for GEI covariates and robust inference, while allowing multi-threading to reduce computation time. GEM can conduct GEI tests as well as joint tests of genetic main and interaction effects for both continuous and binary phenotypes. Through simulations, we demonstrate that GEM scales to millions of samples while addressing limitations of existing software programs. We additionally conduct a gene-sex interaction analysis on waist-hip ratio in 352 768 unrelated individuals from the UK Biobank, identifying 24 novel loci in the joint test that have not previously been reported in combined or sex-specific analyses. Our results demonstrate that GEM can facilitate the next generation of large-scale GEI studies and help advance our understanding of the genetic architecture of complex diseases and traits. BACKGROUND: The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is currently in its third year. This follow-up survey was commissioned by the Asia Pacific Association of Allergy Asthma and Clinical Immunology (APAAACI) Task Force on COVID-19 to compare and contrast changes in the epidemiology, clinical profile, therapeutics and public health measures of the pandemic in the Asia Pacific region. METHODS: A questionnaire-based survey comprising 32 questions was electronically sent out to all 15 member countries of APAAACI using Survey Monkey® from 1 December 2021 to 28 February 2022. RESULTS: Seventeen responses were received from 14/15 (93.4%) member countries and 3 individual members. Mild-to-moderate COVID-19 predominated over severe infection, largely contributed by COVID-19 vaccination programmes in the region. The incidence of vaccine adverse reactions in particular anaphylaxis from messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccines was no longer as high as initially anticipated, although perimyocarditis remains a concern in younger males. Novel therapeutics for mild-to-moderate disease including neutralizing antibodies casirivimab/imdevimab (REGEN-COV®) and sotrovimab (Xevudy®), anti-virals Paxlovid® (nirmatrelvir and ritonavir) and Molnupiravir pre-exposure prophylaxis for high-risk persons with Tixagevimab and Cilgavimab (Evusheld) are now also available to complement established therapeutics (e.g., remdesivir, dexamethasone and baricitinib) for severe disease. In the transition to endemicity, public health measures are also evolving away from containment/elimination strategies. CONCLUSIONS: With access to internationally recommended standards of care including public health preventive measures, therapeutics and vaccines among most APAAACI member countries, much progress has been made over the 2-year period in minimizing the morbidity and mortality from COVID-19 disease.

Upon infection, CD8(+) T cells undergo a stepwise process of early activation, expansion, and differentiation into effector cells. How these phases are transcriptionally regulated is incompletely defined. Here, we report that interferon regulatory factor 4 (IRF4), dispensable for early CD8(+) T cell activation, was vital for sustaining the expansion and effector differentiation of CD8(+) T cells. Mechanistically, IRF4 promoted the expression and function of Blimp1 and T-bet, two transcription factors required for CD8(+) T cell effector differentiation, and simultaneously repressed genes that mediate cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Selective ablation of Irf4 in peripheral CD8(+) T cells impaired antiviral CD8(+) T cell responses, viral clearance, and CD8(+) T cell-mediated host recovery from influenza infection. IRF4 expression was regulated by T cell receptor (TCR) signaling strength via mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR). Our data reveal that IRF4 translates differential strength of TCR signaling into different quantitative and qualitative CD8(+) T cell responses.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Puff Bars, a brand of disposable e-cigarettes, have skyrocketed in popularity recently, presenting significant health and safety risks to adolescents. Puff Bars and other disposable e-cigarette products are attractive to children and teenagers because of their vibrant colors and flavors, low cost, and ease of access. This review examines the rise in Puff Bar popularity, describes notable health and safety concerns, and provides advice for parents and pediatricians in identifying and preventing adolescent Puff Bar use. RECENT FINDINGS: Puff Bars have increased in popularity as their product design evaded strict regulations imposed on alternate e-cigarette products, such as Juul. In addition, Puff Bars' sweet and fruit flavors and marketing on social media have made their use pervasive among youth. Puff Bar use can lead to increased risk of e-cigarette product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) and potential exposure to carcinogens. Furthermore, the developmental risks of nicotine use during adolescence include negative effects on cognitive function and detriments to short-term memory. SUMMARY: Puff Bars present a significant danger to adolescents, and it is imperative that parents and pediatricians are aware of the health risks involved with vaping. Pediatricians should explore e-cigarette use during patient visits, and parents must communicate these dangers to their children and be able to identify these products to regulate their use.

Healthcare students play an important role in volunteering activity, often addressing staff shortages. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the willingness of students to volunteer in contribution to the pandemic response, especially in Vietnam, has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of and factors associated with the willingness of healthcare students to volunteer during the COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam. For this, an online cross-sectional survey was conducted, between June 7th and July 6th, 2021, among healthcare students from 10 fields of study at the largest public university of medicine and pharmacy in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Of 2032 respondents, 1473 (72.5%) reported that they would be willing to volunteer during the COVID-19 pandemic. More than half of the students reported having a desire to volunteer in non-patient contact activities such as data entry (65.9%) and logistics (57.7%). Whereas less than 50% of the participants were willing to volunteer with activities involving patients. Year of education, study field, educational format, living arrangements, health status self-perception, chronic illness possession, COVID-19 fear level, past volunteering experience in non-healthcare sectors, and COVID-19 prevention and control training course attendance were all associated with a willingness to volunteer. The strongest barriers preventing volunteering included fear for the health of their family and lack of training/knowledge. Conclusively, healthcare students reported a high level of willingness, indicating a positive attitude toward responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Adequate training should be employed to increase the willingness among healthcare students in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Physicians' knowledge and practice which are consistent with evidence-based guidelines can improve allergic rhinitis (AR) patients' care. Compared with western countries, the available literature about Asian doctors' perceptions and clinical practices regarding Allergic Rhinitis and its Impacts on Asthma (ARIA) guidelines is limited. OBJECTIVE: To collect detailed information about the practical management patterns specific for AR patients and investigate compliance with ARIA in the clinical practice of Asian physicians and elucidate the possible inadequacy in the existing ARIA guidelines. METHODS: An e-mail with a structured questionnaire was sent to members of the Asia-Pacific Association of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology. The questionnaire consisted of doctors' characteristics, environment of medical practice, routine clinical practice following ARIA guidelines and patients' adherence to the prescription. RESULTS: Physicians from 14 countries and regions sent valid questionnaires back, 94.12% of whom were senior doctors with more than 10 years of experience. 88.24% of doctors diagnosed AR depending on the history combined with allergy tests. 82.35% of participants employed the classification criteria by ARIA. 94.12%, 88.24% and 41.8% of respondents recommended intranasal corticosteroids, oral antihistamines and leukotriene receptor antagonists as first-line medications. 5.88% treated perennial AR by intranasal corticosteroids alone. 11.76% of clinicians recommended no allergen immunotherapy (AIT) or biologics and 58.82% of interviewees reported AR patients occasionally or sometimes agreed with the recommendation of AIT. CONCLUSIONS: There was high compliance with ARIA guidelines in Asian senior physicians' actual notion and practice in the management of AR. New-generation ARIA guidelines are imperative for unmet needs.

BACKGROUND: The emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) pose a major threat to the effective treatment and control of typhoid fever. The ongoing outbreak of extensively drug-resistant Salmonella Typhi (S. Typhi) in Pakistan has left azithromycin as the only remaining broadly efficacious oral antimicrobial for typhoid in South Asia. Ominously, azithromycin-resistant S. Typhi organisms have been subsequently reported in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nepal. METHODS: Here, we aimed to understand the molecular basis of AMR in 66 S. Typhi organisms isolated in a cross-sectional study performed in a suburb of Chandigarh in Northern India using whole-genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. RESULTS: We identified 7 S. Typhi organisms with the R717Q mutation in the acrB gene that was recently found to confer resistance to azithromycin in Bangladesh. Six out of the seven azithromycin-resistant S. Typhi isolates also exhibited triple mutations in gyrA (S83F and D87N) and parC (S80I) genes and were resistant to ciprofloxacin. These contemporary ciprofloxacin/azithromycin-resistant isolates were phylogenetically distinct from each other and from those reported from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nepal. CONCLUSIONS: The independent emergence of azithromycin-resistant typhoid in Northern India reflects an emerging broader problem across South Asia and illustrates the urgent need for the introduction of typhoid conjugate vaccines in the region.

BACKGROUND: Symptoms due to dry eye in the form of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) are often seen after cataract surgery. We investigated the influence of cataract surgery on tear film stability on the ocular surface. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 60 eyes of 60 patients who underwent cataract surgery were included in a prospective study in 2017 at the Eye Hospital in Hanoi (Vietnam National Institute of Ophthalmology). The mean age of the patients was 65 ± 10 years. The phacoemulsification was performed under topical anaesthesia by a clear corneal incision and implantation of a foldable IOL. The parameters for the evaluation of the change of the tear film included subjective patient data using the Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire (OSDI), findings of the Schirmer I test, the tear break-up time (TBUT) as well as the tear meniscus height (TMH) measured noninvasively with the Keratograph 5M (Oculus). In addition, conjunctival and corneal changes were examined after vital staining with fluorescein for the cornea and rose bengal for the conjunctiva. Data were collected preoperatively, at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months postoperatively. According to DEWS, the disease is classified into 4 groups: mild, moderate, severe and very severe. RESULTS: One week after surgery, the total score according to OSDI was significantly increased with a total value of 14.4 ± 4.2 (p = 0.001). Schirmer I was 15.8 ± 4.3 mm preoperatively and decreased significantly in the first postoperative week (p = 0.001), before reaching the preoperative level again after three months. TBUT was 12.6 ± 1.5 s preoperatively, decreased significantly to 9.7 ± 1.5 s during the first postoperative week, and normalized to 12.4 ± 1.3 s by the end of the third month. The meniscus height was 0.245 ± 0.055 mm preoperatively, significantly lowered to 0.229 ± 0.057 mm in the first postoperative period and nearly normalised by the third postoperative month to 0.241 ± 0.051 mm. In the first postoperative week, the rate of mild KCS was observed in 30% of patients. At one month, this decreased to 10% and at three months was no longer demonstrable in any patient. CONCLUSION: One of three patients experienced mild KCS after cataract surgery. The symptoms lasted up to three months. This should be taken into account preoperatively and appropriate therapy should be planned.

Inappropriate use of antibiotics in animal production system is one of the major factors leading to the antibiotic resistance (ABR) development. In Vietnam, the ABR situation is crucial as antibiotics have been used indiscriminately for disease prevention and as growth promoters in animals. Thus, a thorough understanding on the ABR in veterinary settings would be beneficial to the Vietnam public health authority in formulating timely interventions. This review aimed to provide information on the current status of antibiotic usage in animal husbandry in Vietnam, identified gaps in research, and suggested possible solutions to tackle ABR. To this end, data on ABR in animals were extracted from 3 major electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect) in the period of January 2013-December 2020. The review findings were reported according to PRISMA, which highlighted the emergence and persistence of ABR in bacterial isolates, including Escherichia coli, Enterococcus spp., and Salmonella species, obtained from pigs and poultry. The lack of awareness of Vietnamese farmers on the antibiotic utilization guidelines was one of the main causes driving the animal ABR. Hence, this paper calls for interventions to restrict antibiotics use in food-producing animals by national action plan and antibiotics control programs. Additionally, studies to evaluate knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of the community are required to promote rational use of antibiotics in all sectors.
