RESUMO

Soliton microcombs are regarded as an ideal platform for applications such as optical communications, optical sensing, low-noise microwave sources, optical atomic clocks, and frequency synthesizers. Many of these applications require a broad comb spectrum that covers an octave, essential for implementing the f - 2f self-referencing techniques. In this work, we have successfully generated an octave-spanning soliton microcomb based on a z-cut thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) microresonator. This achievement is realized under on-chip optical pumping at 340 mW and through extensive research into the broadening of dual dispersive waves (DWs). Furthermore, the repetition rate of the octave soliton microcomb is accurately measured using an electro-optic comb generated by an x-cut TFLN racetrack microresonator. Our results represent a crucial step toward the realization of practical, integrated, and fully stabilized soliton microcomb systems based on TFLN.

The ability to find the right balance between more persistent and more flexible cognitive-control styles is known as "metacontrol." Recent findings suggest a relevance of aperiodic EEG activity and task conditions that are likely to elicit a specific metacontrol style. Here we investigated whether individual differences in aperiodic EEG activity obtained off-task (during resting state) predict individual cognitive-control styles under task conditions that pose different demands on metacontrol. We analyzed EEG resting-state data, task-EEG, and behavioral outcomes from a sample of N = 65 healthy participants performing a Go/Nogo task. We examined aperiodic activity as indicator of "neural noise" in the EEG power spectrum, and participants were assigned to a high-noise or low-noise group according to a median split of the exponents obtained for resting state. We found that off-task aperiodic exponents predicted different cognitive-control styles in Go and Nogo conditions: Overall, aperiodic exponents were higher (i.e., noise was lower) in the low-noise group, who however showed no difference between Go and Nogo trials, whereas the high-noise group exhibited significant noise reduction in the more persistence-heavy Nogo condition. This suggests that trait-like biases determine the default cognitive-control style, which however can be overwritten or compensated for under challenging task demands. We suggest that aperiodic activity in EEG signals represents valid indicators of highly dynamic arbitration between metacontrol styles, representing the brain's capability to reorganize itself and adapt its neural activity patterns to changing environmental conditions.

BACKGROUND: It has been demonstrated that self-efficacy and coping styles are related. However, whether there is a reciprocal longitudinal relation between self-efficacy and coping styles needs to be examined. In this longitudinal study, we tested the reciprocal impacts of self-efficacy and coping styles, taking into account the role of future self-continuity (FSC) in these effects. METHODS: The sample included 346 university students in central and southwestern China (48.3% female; Mage = 21.20). Three waves of questionnaire data were collected at half-year intervals. Cross-lagged models were adopted for data analysis. RESULTS: Self-efficacy at Waves 1 and 2 positively predicted positive coping style at Waves 2 and 3, and positive coping style at Waves 1 and 2 positively predicted self-efficacy at Waves 2 and 3. Self-efficacy at Waves 1 and 2 negatively predicted negative coping style at Waves 2 and 3, while negative coping style at Waves 1 and 2 did not significantly predict self-efficacy at Waves 2 and 3. These results indicated the reciprocal causation of self-efficacy and coping styles. Additionally, the mediation analysis revealed that FSC at Wave 2 played a mediating role in the unidirectional association between self-efficacy at Wave 1 and negative coping style at Wave 3. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that self-efficacy and coping style have mutual influences over time partly explained by university students' FSC. Consequently, the results offer potential applied value for promoting positive coping strategies among university students.

The hybrid microcavity composed of different materials shows unique thermal-optical properties such as resonance frequency shift and small thermal noise fluctuations with the temperature variation. Here, we have fabricated the hybrid Si3N4 - TiO2 microring, which decreases the effective thermo-optical coefficients (TOC) from 23.2pm/K to 11.05pm/K due to the opposite TOC of these two materials. In this hybrid microring, we experimentally study the thermal dynamic with different input powers and scanning speeds. The distorted transmission and thermal oscillation are observed, which results from the non-uniform scanning speed and the different thermal relaxation times of the Si3N4 and the TiO2. We calibrate the distorted transmission spectrum for the resonance measurement at the reverse scanning direction and explain the thermal oscillation with a thermal-optical coupled model. Finally, we analyse the thermal oscillation condition and give the diagram about the oscillation region, which has significant guidance for the occurrence and avoidance of the thermal oscillation in practical applications.

Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a global concern, often undetected until reaching an advanced stage. Palmitic acid (PA) is a type of fatty acid that increases and leads to liver apoptosis in MAFLD. However, there is currently no approved therapy or compound for MAFLD. Recently, branched fatty acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids (FAHFAs), a group of bioactive lipids, have emerged as promising agents to treat associated metabolic diseases. This study utilizes one type of FAHFA, oleic acid ester of 9-hydroxystearic acid (9-OAHSA), to treat PA-induced lipoapoptosis in an in vitro MAFLD model using rat hepatocytes and a high-fat high-cholesterol high-fructose (HFHCHFruc) diet in Syrian hamsters. The results indicate that 9-OAHSA rescues hepatocytes from PA-induced apoptosis and attenuates lipoapoptosis and dyslipidemia in Syrian hamsters. Additionally, 9-OAHSA decreases the generation of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mito-ROS) and stabilizes the mitochondrial membrane potential in hepatocytes. The study also demonstrates that the effect of 9-OAHSA on mito-ROS generation is at least partially mediated by PKC-δ signaling. These findings suggest that 9-OAHSA shows promise as a therapy for MAFLD.

BACKGROUND: Limosilactobacillus johnsoni (L. j) and Limosilactobacillus mucosae (L. m) can alleviate the inflammatory response. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms by which L. j- and L. m-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) mitigate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced intestinal injury. METHODS: Piglets were assigned to 4 groups: oral phosphate-buffered saline inoculation for 2 wk prior to intraperitoneal injection of physiological saline or LPS, and oral L. j/L. m inoculation for 2 wk prior to intraperitoneal injection of LPS. The intestinal integrity, macrophage markers, cytokine levels, and microbiota were determined. The cytokine levels and macrophage phenotype were detected after L. j/L. m and their EVs were coincubated with macrophages. The levels of cytokines, tight junction proteins, and apoptosis were measured after intestinal epithelial cells were cocultured with macrophages. RESULTS: LPS challenge decreased jejunal villus length; expression levels of zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), occludin, arginase-1 (Arg1), and interleukin (IL)-10; and number of CD163+ cells and increased the expression levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), IL-1ß, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α compared with that in the control. L. j and L. m pretreatment rescued the aforementioned indicators compared with LPS challenge. Pretreatment of L. j and L. m and their EVs reversed the levels of IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-10 and the gene expression of iNOS and Arg1 in the LPS group in macrophages. Pretreatment with L. j and L. m-derived EVs increased ZO-1 and occludin mRNA expression and reduced IL-1ß, caspase-3, and bax gene expression in intestinal epithelial cells of the coculture system. Enzyme-treated EVs were less effective than native EVs. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that EVs secreted by L. j and L. m control inflammation by modulating macrophage polarization, thereby improving intestinal barrier function.

BACKGROUND: Low-birth-weight (LBW) animals suffer from intestinal damage and inflammation in their early life. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of macrophages in intestinal inflammation in LBW piglets and mice. METHODS: Major genes involved in intestinal barrier function such as claudin-1, zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), occludin, and mucin 2 and inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1ß, TNF-α, IL-10, and IL-13 were evaluated in 21-day-old, normal-birth-weight (NBW) and LBW piglets and mice. Macrophage markers such as CD16/32, CD163, and CD206 were also assessed by immunofluorescence and flow cytometry. Polarized and unpolarized macrophages were further transferred into NBW and LBW mice, followed by an evaluation of intestinal permeability and inflammation. RESULTS: Claudin-1 mRNA in LBW piglets as well as claudin-1, occludin, ZO-1, and mucin 2 mRNAs in LBW mice, was significantly downregulated. IL-1ß and TNF-α were significantly upregulated in LBW piglets (P < 0.05). LBW mice showed a reduced expression of IL-10 and IL-13 (P < 0.05), with a heightened IL-6 level (P < 0.01) in the jejunum. CD16, a marker for M1 macrophages, was significantly elevated in the jejunum of LBW piglets, whereas CD163, a marker for M2 macrophages, was significantly decreased (P < 0.05). Similarly, LBW mice had more CD11b+CD16/32+ M1 macrophages (P < 0.05) and fewer CD206+ M2 macrophages (P < 0.01) than NBW mice. Moreover, the transfer of M1 macrophages exacerbated intestinal inflammation in LBW mice. Furthermore, 2 major glycolysis-associated genes, hexokinase 2 (HK2) and lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA), were significantly upregulated in LBW piglets and mice (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed for the first time that the intestinal macrophages are polarized toward a proinflammatory phenotype in LBW piglets and mice, contributing to intestinal inflammation. The findings of this study provide new options for the management of intestinal inflammation in LBW animals.

Mitochondrial dysfunction has been linked to many diseases, including organ degeneration and cancer. Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells provide a valuable source for stem cell-based therapy and represent an emerging therapeutic approach for tissue regeneration. This study focused on screening the senomorphic properties of Ohwia caudata aqueous extract as an emerging strategy for preventing or treating mitochondrial dysfunction in stem cells. Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells were incubated with 0.1 µM doxorubicin, for 24 h to induce mitochondrial dysfunction. Next, the cells were treated with a series concentration of Ohwia caudata aqueous extract (25, 50, 100, and 200 µg/mL) for another 24 h. In addition, an untreated control group and a doxorubicin-induced mitochondrial dysfunction positive control group were maintained under the same conditions. Our data showed that Ohwia caudata aqueous extract markedly suppressed doxorubicin-induced mitochondrial dysfunction by increasing Tid1 and Tom20 expression, decreased reactive oxygen species production, and maintained mitochondrial membrane potential to promote mitochondrial stability. Ohwia caudata aqueous extract retained the stemness of Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells and reduced the apoptotic rate. These results indicate that Ohwia caudata aqueous extract protects Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells against doxorubicin-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and can potentially prevent mitochondrial dysfunction in other cells. This study provides new directions for the medical application of Ohwia caudata.

Fibroblast-like synoviocytes accumulation, proliferation and activation, and the subsequent inflammatory mediators production play a key role in the progression of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It is well established that Janus kinase 2/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (JAK2/STAT3) signaling triggers inflammation, and induces cytokine levels in RA. Ohwia caudata have long been used against many disorders. However, in RA, the effects of O. caudata have not been elucidated. In the current study, synoviocytes were used to evaluate the suppressive effects of O. caudate extract (OCE) on the pro-inflammatory cytokines production. In vitro, the underlying mechanisms by which OCE inhibits inflammatory response through regulation of suppressors of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3) and JAK2/STAT3 expression in IL-17A-treated HIG-82 synoviocytes were investigated. The results demonstrated that the proliferation of IL-17A-challenged cells were increased in comparison with non-stimulated control cells. The synoviocyte proliferation was decreased significantly of OCE concentrations in dose dependent manner. The p-JAK2, p-STAT3, interleukin (IL)-1ß, and IL-6 were reduced in IL-17A-challenged cells treated with OCE. Furthermore, AZD1480 (a JAK2-specific inhibitor) or WP1066 (a STAT3-specific inhibitor) affected the inflammatory mediators production in IL-17A-challenged synoviocytes, and OCE failed to mitigate the IL-17A-induced inflammatory mediators and SOCS3, acting as a feedback inhibitor of the JAK/STAT3 pathway, in the presence of SOCS3 siRNA, indicating that the beneficial effects of OCE on the regulation of inflammatory response homeostasis were dependent on SOCS3 and the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway. Our study also showed that SOCS3 was markedly activated by OCE in RA fibroblast-like synoviocytes, thereby decreasing the JAK/STAT3 pathway, and the IL-1ß, and IL-6 activation. Thus, O. caudate should be further investigated as a candidate anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic agent.

Ohwia caudata (Thunb.) H. Ohashi (Leguminosae) also called as "Evergreen shrub" and Artemisia argyi H.Lév. and Vaniot (Compositae) also named as "Chinese mugwort" those two-leaf extracts frequently used as herbal medicine, especially in south east Asia and eastern Asia. Anthracyclines such as doxorubicin (DOX) are commonly used as effective chemotherapeutic drugs in anticancer therapy around the world. However, chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity, dilated cardiomyopathy, and congestive heart failure are seen in patients who receive DOX therapy, with the mechanisms underlying DOX-induced cardiac toxicity remaining unclear. Mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and cardiomyocytes have been shown to play crucial roles in DOX-induced cardiotoxicity. Isoliquiritigenin (ISL, 10 mg/kg) is a bioactive flavonoid compound with protective effects against inflammation, neurodegeneration, cancer, and diabetes. Here, in this study, our aim is to find out the Artemisia argyi (AA) and Ohwia caudata (OC) leaf extract combination with Isoliquiritigenin in potentiating and complementing effect against chemo drug side effect to ameliorate cardiac damage and improve the cardiac function. In this study, we showed that a combination of low (AA 300 mg/kg; OC 100 mg/kg) and high-dose(AA 600 mg/kg; OC 300 mg/kg) AA and OC water extract with ISL activated the cell survival-related AKT/PI3K signaling pathway in DOX-treated cardiac tissue leading to the upregulation of the antioxidant markers SOD, HO-1, and Keap-1 and regulated mitochondrial dysfunction through the Nrf2 signaling pathway. Moreover, the water extract of AA and OC with ISL inhibited the inflammatory response genes IL-6 and IL-1ß, possibly through the NFκB/AKT/PI3K/p38α/NRLP3 signaling pathways. The water extract of AA and OC with ISL could be a potential herbal drug treatment for cardiac hypertrophy, inflammatory disease, and apoptosis, which can lead to sudden heart failure.

The rapidly changing and high-risk nature of communicable diseases for older adults require individuals in this age group to appropriately change their lifestyle and healthcare habits and engage in self-care more actively and seriously. Good self-health management relies on good health literacy in order to be able to read, understand, and apply relevant health information; to communicate clearly with healthcare providers; and to take health-related decisions and actions. The results of research indicate the health literacy of over 50% of older adults in Taiwan to be inadequate, which may be expected to negatively impact on related health outcomes. After introducing the content, determinants, and impacts of health literacy, the author suggests strategies to improve health literacy in older adults in five activity domains based on current theories and research findings. These domains include: formulate public policies for health literacy, adjust the orientation of health services, construct a friendly healthy information environment for health literacy, strengthen community health literacy education resources, and promote gerontological education and shared decision-making in health care.

Xylo-oligosaccharide (XOS), which is considered as a potential prebiotic, exhibits multiple beneficial effects on modulation of gut microbiota, strength of intestinal barrier, and inhibition of intestinal inflammation. The objective of this study is to investigate whether XOS protects against Salmonella infection by modulating gut microbiota, enhancing the intestinal barrier, and resisting colonization. C57BL/6 male mice received water supplementation with 5% XOS for 14 days before Salmonella Typhimurium infection. The results showed that XOS suppressed the Salmonella-induced inflammation, but had limited effects on tight junction molecules and mRNA expression of mucus proteins, except for claudin-1 in the colon. Data of 16S rDNA sequencing indicated that XOS modulated gut microbiota composition by significantly stimulating Bifidobacterium animalis (B. animalis), and reducing Salmonella counts. Therefore, the potential protective effects of B. animalis against Salmonella challenge were investigated as well. Bifidobacterium animalis subsp lactis BB-12 (BB12), which could markedly increase in XOS, was selected to treat mice. Similarly, Salmonella-induced inflammatory reactions were alleviated by BB12 but tight junction molecules and mucin proteins in the colonic tissues were not affected. Administration of BB12 remarkably decreased the copies of Salmonella in cecal digesta post Salmonella infection. Additionally, the decrease concentrations of cecal propionate and total short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in Salmonella-infected mice were reversed by BB12 treatment, and propionate performed a strong inhibitory effect on Salmonella growth in vitro. Besides that, BB12 could directly restrict Salmonella proliferation in vitro. Moreover, BB12 reduced the adhesion ability of Salmonella on the Caco-2 cells model. Our results suggest that XOS could be considered as a candidate of functional food to protect against Salmonella infection by stimulating Bifidobacterium, which then resists Salmonella colonization by maintaining the intestinal SCFAs levels and suppressing adhesibility.

We theoretically investigate the athermal constructions to cancel the thermorefractive effect of a hybrid Si3N4-TiO2 microring, which merges two materials with opposite thermo-optical coefficients (TOCs). The analytical and numerical results predict that the thermorefractive effect can be reduced under the appropriate parameters. In addition, the soliton state is easily accessed under the athermal condition. The thermorefractive noise due to the fluctuation of the microresonator temperature caused by the heat exchange between the microresonator and the surrounding environment is also suppressed by one order of magnitude, which is critical for the potential applications of soliton microcombs, such as spectroscopy, optical clocks and microwave generation.

The past decade has seen an expansion of studies on the role of gut microbiome in piglet nutrition and health. With the help of culture-independent sequencing techniques, the colonization of gut microbiota and their implication in physiology are being investigated in depth. Immediately after birth, the microbes begin to colonize following an age-dependent trajectory, which can be modified by maternal environment, diet, antibiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation. The early-life gut microbiome is relatively simple but enriched with huge metabolic potential to utilize milk oligosaccharides and affect the epithelial function. After weaning, the gut microbiome develops towards a gradual adaptation to the introduction of solid food, with an enhanced ability to metabolize amino acids, fibers, and bile acids. Here we summarize the compositional and functional difference of the gut microbiome in the keystone developing phases, with a specific focus on the use of different nutritional approaches based on the phase-specific gut microbiome.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune and chronic inflammatory disease that results in joint destruction and disability in the adult population. RA is characterized by the accumulation and proliferation of fibroblast-like synoviocytes. Many pro-inflammatory mediators are associated with RA, such as interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, IL-17, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB). Furthermore, IL-17 upregulates the production of other pro-inflammatory mediators, including IL-1ß and IL-6, and promotes the recruitment of neutrophils in RA. Artemisia argyi, a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, is used for the treatment of diseases associated with inflammation and microbial infections. In this study, synoviocytes (HIG-82) were treated with varying doses of A. argyi extract (AAE) following IL-17A stimulation. Proliferation of the IL-17A-stimulated cells was increased compared to that of the non-stimulated control cells. However, cell proliferation decreased significantly in a dose-dependent manner following AAE treatment. Treatment of IL-17A-stimulated cells with AAE resulted in decreased levels of phosphorylated (p)-NF-κB, p-IκB-α, and COX-2. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay results showed that IL-1ß and IL-6 levels were increased in the IL-17A-stimulated group but decreased in the AAE treatment group. Additionally, we found that AAE facilitated nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) expression and promoted its nuclear translocation, thereby inducing the expression of heme oxygenase-1. Moreover, AAE did not attenuate IL-17A-induced inflammatory mediator production in the presence of ML385, an Nrf2-specific inhibitor. These results suggest that the downregulation of expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the transcription factor NF-κB by AAE may be a potential therapeutic strategy for reducing inflammation associated with RA.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus worldwide has increased in recent decades. Maintaining the level of blood glucose is the most basic and important issue for diabetics. This study aimed to investigate the hypoglycemic activity of a combination of hypoglycemic peptide-enriched hydrolysates of Corbicula fluminea (ACH) and Chlorella sorokiniana (PCH). RESULTS: Combined supplementation of ACH and PCH synergistically inhibited α-glucosidase and DPP4 activities in vitro. After 4 weeks of treatment with ACH and/or PCH, the plasma glucose concentration and insulin, homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) levels significantly decreased. The hypoglycemic peptides in ACH and PCH were purified and assayed for α-glucosidase and DPP4 activity. The hypoglycemic peptides in ACH and PCH effectively decreased α-glucosidase and DPP4 activities. In silico assays showed that these two peptide types have different docking poses, which determined their inhibitory effect against α-glucosidase and DPP4 activity. CONCLUSION: Combined treatment with hypoglycemic peptide-enriched ACH and PCH could modulate blood glucose by synergistically inhibiting α-glucosidase and DPP4 activities. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Microbes employ autoinducers of quorum sensing (QS) for population communication. Although the autoinducer of Pseudomonas aeruginosa LasI-LasR system, N-(3-oxododecanoyl)- l-homoserine lactone (3OC12), has been reported with deleterious effects on host cells, its biological effects on integrity of the intestinal epithelium and epithelial barrier are still unclear and need further investigation. In the present study, flow cytometry, transcriptome analysis and western blot technology have been adopted to investigate the potential molecular mechanisms of 3OC12 and its structurally similar analogs damage to intestinal epithelial cells. Our results indicated that 3OC12 and 3OC14 trigger apoptosis rather than necrosis and ferroptosis in intestinal epithelial cells. RNA-sequencing combined with bioinformatics analysis showed that 3OC12 and 3OC14 reduced the expression of genes from extracellular matrix (ECM)-receptor interaction pathway. Consistently, protein expressions from ECM and tight junction-associated pathway were significantly reduced after 3OC12 and 3OC14 challenge. In addition, 3OC12 and 3OC14 led to blocked cell cycle, decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, increased reactive oxygen species level and elevated Ca2+ concentration. Reversely, the antioxidant NAC could effectively mitigate the reduced expression of ECM and tight junction proteins caused by 3OC12 and 3OC14 challenge. Collectively, this study demonstrated that QS autoinducer exposure to intestinal epithelial cells ablates the ECM and tight junctions by triggering oxidative stress and apoptosis, and finally disrupts the intestinal epithelial barrier. These findings provide a rationale for defensing QS-dependent bacterial infections and potential role of NAC for alleviating the syndrome.

BACKGROUND: In piglets, low birth weight (LBW) is associated with intestinal dysfunction, which affects their growth performance and causes economic losses. OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to test whether microbial quorum sensing (QS) affects LBW-induced intestinal developmental defects in piglets. METHODS: Seven normal-birth-weight (NBW; 1.36 ± 0.01 kg) and 7 LBW (0.89 ± 0.01 kg) piglets were selected. Feces were collected from piglets on 2, 21, and 50 days of age for detection of the QS signaling molecules, N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs), and microbiota analysis. The associations between 2 long-chain AHLs [N-3-oxo-dodecanoyl-l-homoserine lactone (3OC12-HSL) and N-3-oxo-tetradecanoyl-l-homoserine lactone (3OC14-HSL)] and the microbes were tested using Spearman correlation coefficients. The effect of 3OC12-HSL and 3OC14-HSL on intestinal porcine epithelial cell-jejunum 2 (IPEC-J2) cell viability was investigated by cholecystokinin octapeptide assay. Transcriptomic analysis was performed by RNA sequencing on cells treated with 3OC12-HSL. RESULTS: The concentrations of 3OC12-HSL and 3OC14-HSL in the feces of LBW piglets were higher than those in NBW piglets at age 50 d by 2.5- and 2.24-fold, respectively (P < 0.05). The microbial α diversity (observed species, abundance-based coverage estimator, and Shannon index) of LBW piglets was 81-91% lower than that of NBW piglets (P < 0.05). The relative abundance of Ruminococcaceae UCG-002/UCG-013 was 43.0% and 30.0% lower, respectively, in feces from LBW compared with NBW piglets (P < 0.05). 3OC12-HSL and Ruminococcaceae UCG-002/UCG-005/UCG-010 abundance were negatively correlated (ρ  ≤  -0.58). Treatment with 400 µM 3OC12-HSL markedly reduced IPEC-J2 cell viability by 47.5%. Transcriptomic data showed that 3OC12-HSL mainly changed the "import across plasma membrane" and "arginine and proline metabolism" of IPEC-J2 cells. CONCLUSIONS: 3OC12-HSL is a QS signaling molecule with an ability to impair gut health of LBW piglets. This finding adds to our understanding of the mechanisms responsible for gut injury in LBW piglets.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidies has increasingly been employed for embryo selection, resulting in a recent surge in mosaic embryos. According to the cytogenetic results, which types of mosaic embryo survive early pregnancy, progress to the second trimester and finally result in a live birth? DESIGN: This study evaluated 30,587 pregnant women undergoing amniocentesis from January 2004 to March 2020 at the cytogenic centre of Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Samples from amniocentesis were cultured using the in-situ method. The types and distribution of level III chromosomal mosaicism (two or more cells with the same abnormality in two or more colonies and both culture dishes, clinically referred to as 'true mosaicism') were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Among the 30,587 women, 78 cases (0.26%) of level III chromosomal mosaicism were identified. The types of chromosomal mosaicism were classified as sex chromosome mosaicism (SCM), autosomal chromosome mosaicism (ACM) and marker chromosome mosaicism (MCM), with SCM, ACM and MCM accounting for 58.97%, 32.05% and 8.97% of cases, respectively. The most common mosaic cell lines were monosomy X and trisomy 21. The most common mosaic cell line progressing to live birth was monosomy X. CONCLUSIONS: Mosaic monosomy X and trisomy 21 are the most common cell lines of true mosaicism determined by amniocentesis. Monosomy X mosaicism is the most common cell line in live births. For women considering the transfer of these types of mosaic embryo in a circumstance where euploid embryos are unavailable, clinicians should provide careful prenatal counselling, detailed ultrasonography and amniocentesis.

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is one of the most important food crops worldwide and its leaves provide a dietary source of nutrients and various bioactive compounds. These constituents of sweet potato leaves (SPL) vary among varieties and play important roles in treating and preventing various diseases. Recently, more attentions in health-promoting benefits have led to several in vitro and in vivo investigations, as well as the identification and quantification of bioactive compounds in SPL. Among them, many new compounds have been reported as the first identified compounds from SPL with their dominant bioactivities. This review summarizes the current knowledge of the bioactive compositions of SPL and their health benefits. Since SPL serve as a potential source of micronutrients and functional compounds, they can be further developed as a sustainable crop for food and medicinal industries.
