Progestins are mainly used in pharmacotherapy and animal husbandry and have received increasing attention as they are widely detected in various aquatic ecosystems. In this study, adult female western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) were exposed to different concentrations of norethindrone (NET) (solvent control, 5.0 (L), 50.0 (M), and 500.0 (H) ng/L) for 42 days. Behaviors, morphological parameters, histology of the thyroid, thyroid hormone levels (TSH, T3, and T4), and transcriptional levels of nine genes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis were examined. The results showed that NET decreased sociality but increased the anxiety of G. affinis. Sociality makes fish tend to cluster, and anxiety may cause G. affinis to reduce exploration of new environments. Female fish showed hyperplasia, hypertrophy, and glial depletion in their thyroid follicular epithelial cells after NET treatment. The plasma levels of TSH and T4 were significantly reduced, but T3 concentrations were significantly increased in the fish from the H group. In addition, the transcripts of genes (tshb, tshr, tg, dio1, dio2, thrb) in the brains of fish in the M and H treatments were significantly stimulated, while those of trh and pax2a were suppressed. Our results suggest that NET may impact key social behaviors in G. affinis and interfere with the entire thyroid endocrine system, probably via affecting the transcriptional expression of upstream regulators in the HPT axis.

In recent years, CC chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2) has been found to be involved in tumor growth, angiogenesis, epithelial mesenchymal transition, metastasis, and immune escape. CCR2 overexpression was first identified as a poor prognostic predictor in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) in our published article, but the mechanisms involved remain unknown. In this work, we collected data from another 138 patients with DLBCL data and verified the CCR2 expression level and its relationship to clinicopathological characteristics. Furthermore, we explored the possible mechanisms via in vitro and in vivo experiments. We showed that CCR2 overexpression was an independent prognostic marker and predicted shorter overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with DLBCL. Blockade of CCR2 expression with a CCR2 antagonist inhibited tumor cell proliferation, migration, and anti-apoptosis ability in vitro by affecting the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway and the p38 MAPK signaling pathway. Furthermore, administration of a CCR2 antagonist decreased tumor growth and dissemination of DLBCL cells and increased survival time in the xenograft model. Our study demonstrates that CCR2 expression plays an important role in the development of DLBCL by stimulating cell proliferation, migration, and anti-apoptosis. Therefore, the inhibition of CCR2 may be a potential target for anticancer therapy in DLBCL.

To select candidate genes for goat prolificacy, we managed six multi- and six single-kid female goats at the same feeding level and in the same management mode over a 4-year period. These goats showed stable differences in litter size over five continuous parturition records. Whole-genome re-sequencing was used in all 12 to select candidate genes, namely, AURKA, ENDOG, SOX2, RORA, GJA10, RXFP2, CDC25C, and NANOS3, by the strength of their differentiation signals. Most of the selected genes were enriched in the coiled coil process and ovarian development, which suggests that the coiled coil process has a potential regulatory effect on fecundity. Detection of the distribution of variants and association analyses with litter size in 400 goats showed that NANOS3 exon mutations may lead to a transformation of the protein structure. The variation in CDC25C, ENDOG, and NANOS3 showed a significant association with litter size. These results can contribute to the improvement of reproduction traits in the artificial breeding of goats.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence indicates that miRNAs are involved in multiple cellular functions and participate in various cancer development and progression, including breast cancer. METHODS: We aimed to investigate the role of miR-381-3p in breast cancer. The expression level of miR-381-3p and EMT transcription factors was examined by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The effects of miR-381-3p on breast cancer proliferation and invasion were determined by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8), colony formation, and transwell assays. The regulation of miR-381-3p on its targets was determined by dual-luciferase analysis, qRT-PCR, and western blot. RESULTS: We found that the expression of miR-381-3p was significantly decreased in breast cancer tissues and cell lines. Overexpression of miR-381-3p inhibited breast cancer proliferation and invasion, whereas knockdown of miR-381-3p promoted cell proliferation and invasion in MDA-MB-231 and SKBR3 cells. Mechanistically, overexpression of miR-381-3p inhibited breast cancer epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Both Sox4 and Twist1 were confirmed as targets of miR-381-3p. Moreover, transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) could reverse the effects of miR-381-3p on breast cancer progression. CONCLUSIONS: Our observation suggests that miR-381-3p inhibits breast cancer progression and EMT by regulating the TGF-ß signaling via targeting Sox4 and Twist1.

This study evaluated the feasibility of combining potassium chloride (KCl) leaching and electrokinetic (EK) treatment for the remediation of cadmium (Cd) and other metals from contaminated soils. KCl leaching was compared at three concentrations (0.2%, 0.5%, and 1% KCl). EK treatment was conducted separately to migrate the metals in the topsoil to the subsoil. The combined approach using KCl leaching before or after EK treatment was compared. For the single vertical EK treatment, the removal of Cd, lead (Pb), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) from the topsoil (0-20 cm) was 9.38%, 4.80%, 0.95%, and 10.81%, respectively. KCl leaching at 1% KCl removed 84.06% Cd, 9.95% Pb, 4.34% Cu, and 19.93% Zn from the topsoil, with higher removal efficiency than that of the 0.2% and 0.5% KCl leaching treatments. By combining the KCl leaching and EK treatment, the removal efficiency of heavy metals improved, in particular for the 1% KCl + EK treatment, where the removal rate of Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn from the upper surface soil reached 97.79%, 17.69%, 14.37%, and 41.96%, respectively. Correspondingly, the soil Cd content decreased from 4 to 0.21 mg/kg, and was below the Chinese standard limit of 0.3 mg/kg soil. These results indicate that 1% KCl + EK treatment is a good combination technique to mitigate Cd pollution from contaminated soils used for growing rice and leafy vegetables.

Purpose: To investigate the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of the KangDuo-Surgical Robot-01 (KD-SR-01) system for robot-assisted radical nephroureterectomy (RARNU). Materials and Methods: This prospective, single-center, single-arm clinical study of patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) was conducted from August 2022 to July 2023 using the KD-SR-01 system. The perioperative and follow-up data were prospectively recorded. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration task load index was calculated to present ergonomics. The technique was described in detail. Results: A total of 13 patients underwent RARNU. None of the cases conversed to laparoscopic procedure or open procedure. The median docking time and console time were 524 seconds (range 139-963 seconds) and 102.2 minutes (range 55.3-249.3 minutes), respectively. The median estimated blood loss was 40 mL (range 10-100 mL). None of the patients required intraoperative blood transfusion. The median postoperative hospital stay was 4 days (range 2-7 days). Intraoperative or postoperative complications (Clavien-Dindo grade I) occurred in nine patients. The surgeon task load index global score achieved 1.05 ± 1.86. Three patients received the single-docking technique, demonstrating similar perioperative results compared with patients with redocking. The study is registered at www.chictr.org.cn (ChiCTR2200056672). Conclusions: The KD-SR-01 system was feasible, safe, and effective for RARNU.

Land application of sewage sludge usually leads to increased levels of heavy metals in soil, plants and groundwater. Pre-treatment using plants has been proposed to reduce the contents of heavy metals and water in sludge prior to land application. This study quantified the transfer of Zn, Cd, Pb and major nutrients in a sludge-soil-plant-leachate system during the treatment of sewage sludge. To accomplish this, a two year pot experiment was carried out to collect leachate, mono- and co-cropping of Sedum alfredii and feed crops was conducted in sludge with an under-layer soil support. Sludge phyto-treatment increased Zn and Cd concentrations in the under-layer soil, but not Pb. Specifically, 70%, 70% and 80% of the original Zn, Cd and Pb, respectively, remained in the sludge, while about 40%, 70% and 60% of the original N, P and K remained. Only 3% to 5% of Cd and Zn and < 1% of Pb were transferred into the under-layer soils or leachates, while more than 12% of the N and P were transferred. Co-planting S. alfredii and feed crops led to a significant reduction of heavy metals in leachates when compared with sludge without planting. Overall, sludge leachate is more appropriate than whole sludge for recycling in agriculture since it reduces the chance of heavy metal contamination in the agro-ecosystem; therefore, co-cropping phytotreatment of sludge can be coupled with sludge leachate recycling for crop production and re-collection of the sludge residue for landfilling.

The Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn removal efficiencies achieved by flushing with FeCl3 were determined in a field experiment using soil contaminated with multiple metals. Soil was first flushed with FeCl3 and then with FeCl3 or a mixture of chelators. Flushed soil was amended with lime and organic matter to revitalize the soil, then the soil was used to grow Zea mays and Brassica juncea. The heavy metal concentrations in groundwater were determined to assess the risks of leaching caused by soil flushing. The Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn removal efficiencies were 70%, 40%, 33%, and 17%, respectively, when FeCl3 (25 mmol (kg topsoil)-1) was applied. The second washing generally did not significantly decrease the heavy metal contents of the soil but the second FeCl3 washing did decrease the Pb content. Pb leached from topsoil was partly retained by the subsoil 20-40 cm deep. The Zea mays yields were significantly lower but the Brassica juncea yields were significantly higher after the combined soil flushing and amendment treatment than after only the amendment treatment. This indicated that soil flushing only negatively affected growth of deep-rooted Z. mays. The Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn concentrations in Z. mays grains and the edible parts of B. juncea grown in remediated soil were below the Chinese tolerable limits for contaminants in food. Washing with FeCl3 did not increase groundwater contamination during the study. The results indicated that flushing soil with FeCl3 and subsequent amendments is a technically feasible method for remediating agricultural soil contaminated with Cd.

This study was conducted to identify soil cadmium (Cd) removal pathways and their contribution rates during phytoremediation by Pennisetum hybridum, as well as to comprehensively assess its phytoremediation potential. Multilayered soil column tests and farmland-simulating lysimeter tests were conducted to investigate the Cd phytoextraction and migration patterns in topsoil and subsoil simultaneously. The aboveground annual yield of P. hybridum grown in the lysimeter was 206 ton·ha-1. The total amount of Cd extracted in P. hybridum shoots was 234 g·ha-1, which was similar to that of other typical Cd-hyperaccumulating plants such as Sedum alfredii. After the test, the topsoil Cd removal rate was 21.50-35.81%, whereas the extraction efficiency in P. hybridum shoots was only 4.17-8.53%. These findings indicate that extraction by plant shoots is not the most important contributor to the decrease of Cd in the topsoil. The proportion of Cd retained by the root cell wall was approximately 50% of the total Cd in the root. Based on column test results, P. hybridum treatment led to a significant decrease in soil pH and considerably enhanced Cd migration to subsoil and groundwater. P. hybridum decreases Cd in the topsoil through multiple pathways and provides a relatively ideal material for phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated acid soils.

In this study, chemical leaching and electrokinetic technology were used to remediate heavy metal contaminated soil to elucidate its effectiveness and mechanisms. Chemical leaching agents of FeCl3, Fe(NO3)3, KCl, KNO3, and HCl solutions were selected, and the effects of Fe3+, K+, H+, and Cl- on four heavy metal (Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn) removals were compared and analyzed. Then, the influence of the speciation of heavy metals in soil after chemical leaching on the electrokinetic remediation efficiency was studied. The results showed that Fe3+, K+, H+, and Cl- had different effects on the four heavy metal removals; for Cd and Zn, the removal effect of H+was the most effective, but for Pb and Cu, the effect of Fe3+ was the most obvious. On the whole, FeCl3 and Fe(NO3)3 showed the best removal effect for Cd, Pb, and Cu. For the removal of Zn from the soil, the difference in the removal effect of the five leaching agents was not obvious. In comparison with that of FeCl3 and Fe(NO3)3, the HCl solution had a moderate removal effect on the four heavy metals in the soil, and the neutral salts KCl and KNO3 had little removal effect on the four heavy metals. Especially for Cd and Cu, KCl and KNO3 addition significantly increased the removal of heavy metals through the subsequent electrokinetic remediation. After the chemical leaching, electrokinetic remediation could make heavy metals in the topsoil (0-10 cm) migrate downward and enrich the 10-20 cm and 20-30 cm soil layers, which requires further studies to resolve.

Since the approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), ferumoxytol and other iron oxide nanoparticles (IONs) have been widely used as iron supplements for patients with iron deficiency. Meanwhile, IONs have also been used as contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging and as drug carriers. Importantly, IONs have demonstrated a significant inhibitory effect on the growth of tumors, including hematopoietic and lymphoid tumors, such as leukemia. In this study, we further demonstrated the effect of IONs on inhibiting the growth of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) cells by enhancing ferroptosis-mediated cell death. IONs treatment caused an accumulation of intracellular ferrous iron and the onset of lipid peroxidation in DLBCL cells as well as the suppressed expression of anti-ferroptosis protein Glutathione Peroxidase 4 (GPX4), thereby leading to increased ferroptosis. Mechanistically, IONs increased cellular lipid peroxidation through the generation of ROS via the Fenton reaction and regulating the iron metabolism-related proteins, such as ferroportin (FPN) and transferrin receptor (TFR), which elevated the intracellular labile iron pool (LIP). Hence, our findings suggest the potential therapeutic effect of IONs on the treatment of patients with DLBCL.

Iron metabolism is the process of absorption, transport, storage and conversion and excretion of the essential trace element iron in living organisms. Normal iron metabolism tightly regulates iron content at the systemic and cellular levels through a variety of related proteins to prevent excessive free radicals from being generated during the iron cycle that can damage the body. Various abnormalities in iron metabolism are found in a variety of lymphohaematopoietic tumours and an insidious link between iron metabolism and tumour development has been revealed. Serum ferritin levels and abnormalities of iron transport proteins, transferrin and their receptors can be used as prognostic indicators for lymphohematopoietic tumours and have opened up new directions of diagnosis and treatment, with a large number of novel drugs targeting tumours emerging to date. This article briefly describes the normal iron metabolism process and highlights the progress of research on abnormal iron metabolism in lymphohematopoietic tumors at the systemic and cellular levels.

In order to produce safe rice from cadmium (Cd) contaminated soils, a special pot experiment in the field was proposed to facilitate the study of multiple remediation measures. In the field experiments, four treatments were selected for the first half of the year: rice without soil treatment (R); rice with zeolite stabilization (RZ); oilseed rape phytoremediation (OR); and inter-cropping Sedum alfredii and maize phytoremediation (IC). As the early rice with zeolite stabilization still contained elevated Cd, manganese (Mn) fertilizer was added in the late rice with a special pot experiment in the field. Results showed that, in the first crops, the grains of maize and oilseed rape contained Cd below the food standard limit, while Cd in rice grain exceeded the limit of 0.2 mg/kg. The RZ treatment did not reduce Cd in rice but decreased significantly Mn in rice straw. In the late rice, Mn fertilizer additionally reduced Cd in rice grain to 0.12 mg/kg in combination with the RZ treatment. Mn accumulation in rice straw was enhanced by Mn fertilizer. These results indicate that the pot experiment in the field provides a useful tool to further evaluate effective treatment combinations to reduce Cd in rice.

Emerging studies of bioactive lipids have made many exciting discoveries in recent years. Sphingolipids and their metabolites perform a wide variety of cellular functions beyond energy metabolism. Emerging evidence based on genetically manipulated mouse models and molecular biology allows us to obtain new insights into the role sphingolipid played on skeletal remodeling. This review summarizes studies or understandings of the crosstalk between sphingomyelin, ceramide, and sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) of sphingolipids family and the cells, especially osteoblasts and osteoclasts of the bone through which bone is remodeled during life constantly. This review also shows agonists and antagonists of S1P as possible therapeutic options and opportunities on bone diseases.

MicroRNAs are important for the regulation of multiple cellular functions and are involved in the initiation and progression of various types of cancer, including breast cancer. Although microRNA (miR)­454­3p is reported to function as an oncogene in several types of human cancer, the role of miR­454­5p in breast cancer remains unknown. The present study demonstrated that miR­454­5p was upregulated in breast cancer and was associated with a poor prognosis in patients with breast cancer. Overexpression of miR­454­5p promoted breast cancer cell viability, migration and invasion in vitro, whereas silencing of miR­454­5p inhibited breast cancer proliferation, migration and invasion in vitro and suppressed tumor growth in vivo. Mechanistically, forkhead box J2 (FoxJ2) was shown to be a target of miR­454­5p and transactivated E­cadherin expression. Moreover, silencing of miR­454­5p reversed the epithelial­mesenchymal transition phenotype through upregulation of the FoxJ2/E­cadherin axis. Collectively, the present findings suggested that miR­454­5p may serve as a novel therapeutic target and prognostic predictor for patients with breast cancer.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between lifestyle habits and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among different ages who were initially diagnosed with breast cancer (within the first 2 weeks) and to determine the contribution of lifestyle habits factors on HRQoL. Methods: Patients with breast cancer were recruited from 22 hospitals in 11 provinces or municipalities in northern and eastern China. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast Cancer (FACT-B) was used to measure HRQoL. Chi-square test, ANOVA, and multivariable generalized linear models were conducted to identify the differences in HRQoL between two age groups (age <50 years and ≥50 years) and to evaluate the contribution of lifestyle habits factors on HRQoL of patients with breast cancer. Results: About 1,199 eligible patients with breast cancer were used for analysis. Younger women (aged <50 years) appeared to show lower scores than older women (aged ≥50 years) in HRQoL subscales, including emotional well-being (p = 0.003), functional well-being (p = 0.006), breast cancer subscale (p = 0.038), and FACT-B Total scores (p = 0.028). Tea and alcohol consumption and being very satisfied with sleep and current life were the strongest predictors of higher HRQoL in younger group. Meanwhile, no coffee consumption, frequent participation in physical activities, high sleep satisfaction, and current life satisfaction were the key predictors of higher HRQoL in older women with breast cancer. Conclusion: The relationship of the nine lifestyle habit items with HRQoL differed among younger and older women. The associated variable of low HRQoL can help clinicians take intervention early in order to improve the prognosis of patients with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: X-ray repair cross-complementary 5 (XRCC5) and 6 (XRCC6) are critical for DNA repair. Few studies have assessed their association with breast cancer risk, and related gene-environment interactions remain poorly understood. This study aimed to determine the influence of XRCC5/6 polymorphisms on breast cancer risk, and their interactions with cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and sleep satisfaction. METHODS: The study included 1039 patients with breast cancer and 1040 controls. Four single-nucleotide polymorphisms of XRCC5 and two of XRCC6 were genotyped. Information about smoking, alcohol consumption, and sleep satisfaction was collected through questionnaires. Odds ratios (OR) and related 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were assessed using unconditional logistic regression models. Gene-environment interactions were analyzed using logistic regression with multiplicative interaction models. RESULTS: XRCC5 rs16855458 was associated with increased breast cancer risk in the co-dominant (ptrend  = 0.003) and dominant (CA + AA vs. CC, OR = 1.29, 95% CI = 1.07-1.56, p = 0.008) genetic models after Bonferroni correction. The CG + GG genotype of XRCC6 rs2267437 was associated with an increased risk of estrogen receptor-negative/progesterone receptor-negative (ER-/PR-) breast cancer (CG + GG vs. CC: OR = 1.54, 95% CI = 1.12-2.13, p = 0.008) after Bonferroni correction. Moreover, an antagonistic interaction between XRCC5 rs16855458 and alcohol consumption (pinteraction  = 0.017), and a synergistic interaction between XRCC6 rs2267437 and sleep satisfaction were associated with breast cancer risk (pinteraction  = 0.0497). However, these interactions became insignificant after Bonferroni correction. CONCLUSION: XRCC5 rs16855458 was associated with breast cancer risk, and XRCC6 rs2267437 was associated with the risk of ER-/PR- breast cancer. Breast cancer risk associated with XRCC5 and XRCC6 polymorphisms might vary according to alcohol consumption and sleep satisfaction, respectively, and merit further investigation.

Despite steady progress in elimination of measles virus globally, measles infection still causes 500,000 annual deaths, mostly in developing countries where endemic measles strains still circulate. Many adults are infected every year in China, with symptoms more severe than those observed in children. In this study, we have used blood samples from adult measles patients in Shanghai and age-matched healthy controls to gain an understanding of the immune status of adult measles patients. IFN-alpha mRNA was reduced in patient PBMC compared with healthy controls. In contrast, gene expression and plasma production of IL-2, IL-10, and IFN-gamma were elevated in patient blood. A similar cytokine profile was observed at early times when cultured PBMC were infected with a clinical isolate of measles virus. In contrast to previous studies in pediatric patients, we did not find a reduction in total CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells in patient PBMC. Interestingly, we found that CD4(+)CD25(+)CD127(low) regulatory T cells were significantly increased in patient PBMC compared with controls. Using intracellular cytokine staining we also show that the measles virus induces IL-10-producing CD14(+) and CD4(+)CD25(+) cells in PBMC. Our results show that adult measles patients in the acute phase of the disease have a mixed Th1/Th2 type response, accompanied with severe immunosuppression of both innate and adaptive responses including suppression of type I IFN. Both regulatory T cells and plasma IL-10 may contribute to the immunosuppression.

In this study, a porous reduced graphene oxide (PRGO) carbon nanomaterial was successfully obtained by activation of natural graphite with KOH at high temperature and was applied as an auxiliary electrode in soil electrokinetic remediation to investigate the promoting effect on Cd migration. We found that PRGO contained a large amount of oxygen-containing groups (hydroxyl and carboxyl groups) and exhibited high Cd2+ adsorption efficiency at pH values above 4, achieving a maximum adsorption capacity of 434.78 mg/g for Cd. In addition, PRGO could selectively adsorb Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn but not K, Na, or Mg from soil solution. The electrokinetic remediation experiment showed that the PRGO auxiliary electrode promoted the migration of Cd and effectively controlled the increase in soil pH near the cathode, possibly due to ion exchange between the surface functional groups on the auxiliary electrode and Cd2+. In addition, the location of the PRGO auxiliary electrode strongly influenced the migration of Cd. For instance, the soil Cd concentration of treatment H-5 was 57.86% lower than that of H-0 at a distance of 5-10 cm from the electrode; however, the soil Cd concentration measured at 0-5 cm for treatment H-5 was 34.84% higher than that of treatment H-0. Our study demonstrated that PRGO could be applied as an auxiliary electrode to promote Cd migration during electrokinetic remediation of Cd-contaminated soil.

BACKGROUND: Cryptococcal meningitis (CM) is one of the most common opportunistic infections caused by Cryptococcus neoformans in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients, and is complicated with significant morbidity and mortality. This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical features, characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of first-diagnosed HIV-associated CM after 2-years of follow-up. METHODS: Data from all patients (n = 101) of HIV-associated CM hospitalized in Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center from September 2013 to December 2016 were collected and analyzed using logistic regression to identify clinical and microbiological factors associated with mortality. RESULTS: Of the 101 patients, 86/99 (86.9%) of patients had CD4 count <50 cells/mm, 57/101 (56.4%) were diagnosed at ≥14 days from the onset to diagnosis, 42/99 (42.4%) had normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cell counts and biochemical examination, 30/101 (29.7%) had concomitant Pneumocystis (carinii) jiroveci pneumonia (PCP) on admission and 37/92 (40.2%) were complicated with cryptococcal pneumonia, 50/74 (67.6%) had abnormalities shown on intracranial imaging, amongst whom 24/50 (48.0%) had more than one lesion. The median time to negative CSF Indian ink staining was 8.50 months (interquartile range, 3.25-12.00 months). Patients who initiated antiretroviral therapy (ART) before admission had a shorter time to negative CSF Indian ink compared with ART-naïve patients (7 vs. 12 months, χ = 15.53, P < 0.001). All-cause mortality at 2 weeks, 8 weeks, and 2 years was 10.1% (10/99), 18.9% (18/95), and 20.7% (19/92), respectively. Coinfection with PCP on admission (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 3.933; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.166-13.269, P = 0.027) and altered mental status (AOR, 9.574; 95% CI, 2.548-35.974, P = 0.001) were associated with higher mortality at 8 weeks. CONCLUSION: This study described the clinical features and outcomes of first diagnosed HIV-associated CM with 2-year follow-up data. Altered mental status and coinfection with PCP predicted mortality in HIV-associated CM.
