Background and Objectives: Stroke survivors commonly experience cognitive deficits, which significantly impact their quality of life. Integrating modern technologies like eye tracking into cognitive assessments can provide objective and non-intrusive measurements. Materials and Methods: This study aimed to evaluate the cognitive and visual processing capabilities of stroke patients using eye-tracking metrics and psychological evaluations. A cohort of 84 ischemic stroke patients from the N-PEP-12 clinical study was selected for secondary analysis, based on the availability of eye-tracking data collected during a visual search task using an adapted Trail Making Test. Standardized cognitive assessments, including the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and digit span tasks, were also conducted. Results: Correlation analyses revealed some notable relationships between eye-tracking metrics and cognitive measures, such as a positive correlation between Symbol Search performance and the number of fixations. Anxiety levels were found to be positively correlated with first fixation duration, while longer first fixation durations were associated with poorer cognitive performance. However, most correlations were not statistically significant. Nonparametric ANOVA showed no significant differences in fixation metrics across the visits. Conclusions: These findings suggest a complex relationship between cognitive status, gaze fixation behavior, and psychological well-being in stroke patients. Further research with larger sample sizes and analysis of saccadic eye movements is needed to better understand these relationships and inform effective interventions for stroke rehabilitation.

Infections in severe burns and their etiology are and will remain a big concern for the medical field. The multi-drug resistant strains of bacteria are a challenge of today's medicine. The aim of our study was to identify the etiological spectrum of bacterial infections in severe burn patients in Romania and their multi-drug resistant patterns. We performed a prospective study that included 202 adult patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Clinical Emergency Hospital of Plastic, Reconstructive Surgery and Burns, Bucharest, Romania (CEHPRSB), from 1 October 2018 to 1 April 2022, a period which includes the first 2 years of the outbreak of COVID-19. From each patient, wound swabs, endotracheal aspirates, blood for blood culture, and urine were collected. The most frequently isolated bacterium was Pseudomonas aeruginosa (39%), followed by Staphylococcus aureus (12%), Klebsiella spp. (11%), and Acinetobacter baumannii (9%). More than 90% of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii were MDR, regardless of the clinical specimen from which they were isolated.

Sexual orientation stigma stems from discriminatory social contexts and may ultimately impact the behavioral health of stigmatized individuals through stress-related pathways. Sexual minority stigma is of particular concern in Europe given the diversity of social contexts on the continent and sexual minority men's rapidly increasing risk of HIV infection, especially in Central and Eastern Europe, potentially rooted in stigma. This study assesses whether stigma in the ubiquitous social contexts surrounding sexual minority men (e.g., family, workplace, government) may place them at higher risk for HIV contraction across six countries. We utilized a large cross-sectional survey sample of HIV-negative sexual minority men (N = 2087; mean age = 31.6, SD = 9.7) from six European countries to test whether those who reported sexual orientation stigma also engaged in more HIV risk-related behaviors, including condomless sex with casual partners (in the absence of PrEP) and substance use before and during sex. Regression analyses were performed in Mplus. We found that a one standard deviation increase in reported sexual orientation stigma was significantly associated with the following during the last sexual encounter: a 19% increase in odds of sex under the influence of alcohol, 27% increase in odds of sex under the influence of cannabis, 49% increase in odds of sex under the influence of illicit drugs, an 11% increase in odds of condomless sex with casual partners in the past 6 months, and a 26% increase in odds of knowing where to receive an HIV test. Sexual minority men who reported perceiving greater sexual orientation-related stigma within their ubiquitous social contexts were significantly more likely to report sexual risk and alcohol and drug use during their last sexual encounter, yet reported more knowledge of preventive services. Contextual stigma might serve as a precursor to behavioral risks of HIV infection, generating maladaptive stress responses capable of being modified through individually-focused interventions. Structural interventions are also needed to ultimately reduce stigma at its source.

IntroductionThe HIV epidemic represents an important public health issue in Europe particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM). Global AIDS Monitoring indicators (GAM) have been widely and jointly promoted as a set of crucial standardised items to be adopted for monitoring and responding to the epidemic.MethodsThe Sialon II study, implemented in 13 European cities (2013-14), was a complex multi-centre integrated bio-behavioural cross-sectional survey targeted at MSM, with a concomitant collection of behavioural and biological (oral fluid or blood specimens) data. Rigorous sampling approaches for hard-to-reach populations were used (time-location sampling and respondent-driven sampling) and GAM indicators were calculated; sampling frames were adapted to allow weighted estimates of GAM indicators.Results4,901 MSM were enrolled. HIV prevalence estimates ranged from 2.4% in Stockholm to 18.0% in Bucharest. When exploring city-level correlations between GAM indicators, prevention campaigns significantly correlated with levels of condom use and level of HIV testing among MSM.ConclusionThe Sialon II project has made an important contribution to the monitoring and evaluation of the HIV epidemic across Europe, integrating the use of GAM indicators within a second generation HIV surveillance systems approach and in participatory collaboration with MSM communities. It influenced the harmonisation of European data collection procedures and indicators via GAM country reporting and contributed essential knowledge informing the development and implementation of strategic, evidence-based HIV prevention campaigns for MSM.

Despite their commensal status, staphylococci can become problematic pathogens expressing multiple and redundant virulence factors. This study aimed to evaluate aggressiveness markers comparatively in staphylococcal strains isolated from severe infections versus asymptomatic carriage in order to identify clinically relevant bacterial traits that could easily be detected in clinical practice and could be suggestive for particular host-pathogen interactions such as cyto-adhesion or biofilm formation, ultimately orienting the clinical decision-making process. We have used in vitro phenotypic methods to assess adhesion to and invasion of eukaryotic cells, biofilm development, and expression of soluble virulence factors in 92 Staphylococcus spp. strains. The adhesion index, invasion capacity, biofilm formation and expression of soluble factors did not differ significantly between clinical and commensal strains. The major bacterial traits we found to be significantly more prevalent in clinical staphylococci were the aggregative adhesion pattern (P = 0.012), cluster adhesion (P = 0.001) and tetrad morphology (P = 0.018). The aggregative adhesion pattern was correlated with higher cyto-adhesion (P < 0.001), higher invasion capacity (P = 0.003) and lower Carmeli scores (P = 0.002). Three major bacterial traits, namely tetrad morphology, aggregative adhesion pattern, and resistance to methicillin (acronym: TAM), can be used to compute an aggressiveness score (SAS) predictive of the staphylococcal strain's virulence and capacity to initiate and develop a biofilm-driven chronic infectious process versus a fulminant acute infection, in a susceptible host.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of HIV status can be important in reducing the risk of HIV exposure. In a European sample of men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM), we aimed to identify factors associated with HIV serostatus disclosure to the most recent anal intercourse (AI) partner. We also aimed to describe the impact of HIV serostatus disclosure on HIV exposure risks. METHODS: During 2013 and 2014, 4901 participants were recruited for the bio-behavioural Sialon-II study in 13 European cities. Behavioural data were collected with a self-administered paper questionnaire. Biological specimens were tested for HIV antibodies. Factors associated with HIV serostatus disclosure with the most recent AI partner were examined using bivariate and multilevel multivariate logistic regression analysis. We also describe the role of serostatus disclosure for HIV exposure of the most recent AI partner. RESULTS: Thirty-five percent (n = 1450) of the study participants reported mutual serostatus disclosure with their most recent AI partner or disclosed having HIV to their partner. Most of these disclosures occurred between steady partners (74%, n = 1077). In addition to the type of partner and HIV diagnosis status, other factors positively associated with HIV serostatus disclosure in the multilevel multivariate logistic regression model were recent testing, no condom use, and outness regarding sexual orientation. Disclosure rates were lowest in three south-eastern European cities. Following condom use (51%, n = 2099), HIV serostatus disclosure (20%, n = 807) was the second most common prevention approach with the most recent AI partner, usually resulting in serosorting. A potential HIV exposure risk for the partner was reported by 26% (111/432) of HIV antibody positive study participants. In 18% (20/111) of exposure episodes, an incorrect HIV serostatus was unknowingly communicated. Partner exposures were equally distributed between steady and non-steady partners. CONCLUSIONS: The probability of HIV exposure through condomless AI is substantially lower after serostatus disclosure compared to non-disclosure. Incorrect knowledge of one's HIV status contributes to a large proportion of HIV exposures amongst European MSM. Maintaining or improving condom use for anal intercourse with non-steady partners, frequent testing to update HIV serostatus awareness, and increased serostatus disclosure particularly between steady partners are confirmed as key aspects for reducing HIV exposures amongst European MSM.

BACKGROUND: Globally, the HIV epidemic continues to represent a pressing public health issue in Europe and elsewhere. There is an emerging and progressively urgent need to harmonise HIV and STI behavioural surveillance among MSM across European countries through the adoption of common indicators, as well as the development of trend analysis in order to monitor the HIV-STI epidemic over time. The Sialon II project protocols have been elaborated for the purpose of implementing a large-scale bio-behavioural survey among MSM in Europe in line with a Second Generation Surveillance System (SGSS) approach. METHODS/DESIGN: Sialon II is a multi-centre biological and behavioural cross-sectional survey carried out across 13 European countries (Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the UK) in community settings. A total of 4,966 MSM were enrolled in the study (3,661 participants in the TLS survey, 1,305 participants in the RDS survey). Three distinct components are foreseen in the study protocols: first, a preliminary formative research in each participating country. Second, collection of primary data using two sampling methods designed specifically for 'hard-to-reach' populations, namely Time Location Sampling (TLS) and Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS). Third, implementation of a targeted HIV/STI prevention campaign in the broader context of the data collection. DISCUSSION: Through the implementation of combined and targeted prevention complemented by meaningful surveillance among MSM, Sialon II represents a unique opportunity to pilot a bio-behavioural survey in community settings in line with the SGSS approach in a large number of EU countries. Data generated through this survey will not only provide a valuable snapshot of the HIV epidemic in MSM but will also offer an important trend analysis of the epidemiology of HIV and other STIs over time across Europe. Therefore, the Sialon II protocol and findings are likely to contribute significantly to increasing the comparability of data in EU countries through the use of common indicators and in contributing to the development of effective public health strategies and policies in areas of high need.

RESUMO

As at 29 February 2016, 15 cases of haemolytic uraemic syndrome with onset between 25 January and 22 February were reported among children between five and 38 months in Romania, and three of them died. Cases were mostly from southern Romania. Six cases tested positive for Escherichia coli O26 by serology. Fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy products were among the possible common food exposures. Investigations are ongoing in Romania to control the outbreak.

We studied whether the serum levels of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and of antibodies against the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor subunit NR2 (NR2 RNMDA ) can discriminate between intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) and ischaemic stroke (IS) in stroke patients. We prospectively recruited patients with suspected stroke (72 confirmed) and 52 healthy controls. The type of brain lesion (ICH or IS) was established using brain imaging. The levels of GFAP and of antibodies against NR2 RNMDA were measured in blood samples obtained within 12 hrs after stroke onset and 24, 48 and 72 hrs and 1 and 2 weeks later using ELISA immunoassay. Improvement in diagnostic performance was assessed in logistic regression models designed to predict the diagnosis and the type of stroke. GFAP peaks early during haemorrhagic brain lesions (at significantly higher levels), and late in ischaemic events, whereas antibodies against NR2 RNMDA have significantly higher levels during IS at all time-points. Neither of the two biomarkers used on its own could sufficiently discriminate patients, but when they are used in combination they can differentiate at 12 hrs after stroke, between ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke with a sensitivity and specificity of 94% and 91%, respectively.

From an interdisciplinary approach, the neurosciences (NSs) represent the junction of many fields (biology, chemistry, medicine, computer science, and psychology) and aim to explore the structural and functional aspects of the nervous system. Among modern neurophysiological methods that "measure" different processes of the human brain to salience stimuli, a special place belongs to eye tracking (ET). By detecting eye position, gaze direction, sequence of eye movement and visual adaptation during cognitive activities, ET is an effective tool for experimental psychology and neurological research. It provides a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the gaze, which is very useful in understanding choice behavior and perceptual decision making. In the high tech era, ET has several applications related to the interaction between humans and computers. Herein, ET is used to evaluate the spatial orienting of attention, the performance in visual tasks, the reactions to information on websites, the customer response to advertising, and the emotional and cognitive impact of various spurs to the brain.

The rise of multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDR) has resulted in limited treatment options and poorer outcomes for patients. The objective of this study was to analyze the overall antibiotic resistance trends and distribution for pathogens identified in urine samples at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases "Prof. Dr. Matei Balș" from Bucharest, Romania, over a 5-year period. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed using automatic systems and the disk diffusion method. ESBL- and carbapenemases-producing strains were identified using immunochromatography tests, and ROSCO Diagnostica kits were used for definitive confirmation. All results were interpreted according to EUCAST clinical breakpoints. Gram-negative rods (GNR) had overall resistance rates higher than 50% for penicillin and 40% for 3rd- and 4th-generation cephalosporins. Escherichia coli resistance to fosfomycin (3%) and nitrofurantoin (2%) remains low, and 33.30% of E. coli, 48% of Klebsiella spp., and 37% of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates were multidrug-resistant (MDR). All Acinetobacter baumannii isolates were MDR by the last year of the study. For Gram-positive cocci (GPC), 37% of all Enterococcus faecium strains and 2% of Enterococcus faecalis were vancomycin-resistant (VRE). E. coli's incidence in UTIs' etiology is on a downward trend. The incidence of Klebsiella spp. and GPCs is rising. Antibiotic stewardship strategies should be implemented after carefully considering regional variations in etiology and resistance trends.

This study aimed to evaluate the frequency of isolation of Staphylococcus aureus from different pathological samples processed in the Microbiology Laboratory of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases "Prof. Dr. Matei Balș", Romania, between 1 January 2017 and 31 December 2022, aiming to establish the ratio of methicillin-resistant to methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus strains and the antibiotic resistance pattern of isolated microorganisms. The data of isolates originating from routine diagnostic tasks were analyzed retrospectively using laboratory data from the microbiology department. Up to 39.11% of Staphylococcus aureus strains were resistant to oxacillin (MRSA), with 49.97% resistance to erythromycin and 36.06% inducible resistance to clindamycin. Resistance rates to ciprofloxacin, rifampicin, gentamicin, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole were 9.98%, 5.38%, 5.95%, and 0.96%, respectively. There was no resistance to vancomycin. Between 2017 and 2022, the percentage of MRSA strains decreased from 41.71% to 33.63%, sharply increasing to 42.42% in 2021 (the year of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the percentage of strains isolated from lower respiratory tract infections was higher than that of strains isolated from wounds or blood, as in previous years). This study showed a high percentage of MRSA strains (39.11% overall) with a higher proportion of these strains isolated from the blood (42.49%) compared to other clinical specimens.

The multiplex PCR assay can be a helpful diagnostic tool for patients with bacteremia. Herein, we assessed the impact of a Blood Culture Identification Panel (BCID) on both the diagnosis and treatment of patients with bacteremia. We performed a retrospective study using laboratory and clinical data to evaluate the impact of syndromic testing using a multiplex PCR testing system (BioFire® FilmArray) for the management of patients with bloodstream infections. BCID detected the pathogen in 102 (87.9%) samples out of the 116 positive blood cultures tested. The average time from the blood culture collection to the communication of the molecular test result was 23.93 h (range: 10.67-69.27 h). The main pathogen detected was Klebsiella pneumoniae (17.6%). The antimicrobial therapy was changed in accordance with the BCID results in 28 (40.6%) out of the 69 cases, wherein the treatment could have been theoretically adjusted. This allowed the adjustment of the therapy to be performed 1305.1 h faster than it would have been possible if conventional diagnostic methods had been used; this was the case for only 35.1% of the time gained if treatment was adjusted for all patients with positive BCID. Thus, although molecular tests can make a difference in the management of bloodstream infections, there is room for improvement in the clinical application of BCID results.

Purpose: To determine the rate of carriage of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) between 2015 and 2019 among patients admitted to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases "Prof. Dr. Matei Balș," from Bucharest, Romania. Methods: Nasal, throat, and rectal/perirectal screening swabs were collected either immediately or during the first 24 hours of admission and sent to the microbiology laboratory where the following MDROs were identified: methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), extended-spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales, carbapenem-resistant/carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CRE/CPE), multidrug-resistant/extended drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MDR/XDR-AB), and multidrug-resistant/extended drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDR/XDR-PA). Results: A total of 5083 unique patients were screened for MRSA and 5008 for VRE, ESBL/CRE/CPE, MDR/XDR-AB, and MDR/XDR-PA. MRSA was detected in 8.24% of patients, VRE in 17.67%, ESBL Enterobacterales in 25.85%, and CPE in 6.13%. MDR/XDR-AB was found in 1.59% and MDR/XDR-PA in 1.91% of patients. The rates of carriage increased between 2015 and 2019 for MRSA (7.23-7.6%), VRE (9-16.68%), CPE (1.15-6.77%), MDR/XDR-PA (1.15-1.91%), and MDR/XDR-AB (1.15-2.04%). OXA-48-type carbapenemase was predominant in Klebsiella pneumoniae (68.62%) and Escherichia coli (89.47%). CPE bacteria other than Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli identified in our study carried mostly metallo-beta-lactamase (n = 28, 84.85%). Conclusion: In this study, 37% of the unique patients screened over five years were found to be MDRO carriers. The proportion of VRE and CPE rectal carriers increased significantly between 2015 and 2019. The most frequently isolated carbapenemase was the OXA-48 type.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic context led to a relevant burden on essential sectors of society; hospital sector capacity is tested in this period. Methods: A cross-sectional study of admissions in hospitals reporting DRG data for 2018-2020. Trend analysis of admissions and deaths in hospitals was carried out for identifying annual patterns and deviations from the 2010-2020 trend. Data aggregated by year, month, diagnosis, death in hospital. Graph analysis for time and diagnosis comparisons and correlation identifying associations. Results: There is an annual change in admission and death patterns recorded in Romanian hospitals. An important contraction in number of acute hospital admissions was recording during the COVID-19 pandemic; patients' hesitancy to seek healthcare and limited capacity to treat patients other than COVID-19 patients due to legal regulations limiting the admissions number could explain this pattern of admission only for serious condition or emergency surgery. In Romania excess deaths in second half 2020 was generally greater than COVID-19 deaths. Overall, excess mortality between March and December 2020 was more than double than reported COVID-19 deaths. The same mortality pattern persists, but with significant decreases for some diagnoses. Conclusions: The Romanian healthcare system has been challenged due to COVID-19 pandemic, leading to temporary reorganization of hospitals with consequences on all acute care diagnostics and therapeutic pathways. It is a challenge to identify causes of reduced inpatient treatment rates and to provide evidence on hospital activity for understanding future optimal management of patients with COVID-19, but also with other acute and chronic conditions.

Introduction: SARS-CoV-2 infection rates and related mortality in elderly from residential care facilities are high. The aim of this study was to explore the immune status after COVID-19 vaccination in people 65 years and older. Methods: The study involved volunteer participants living in residential care facilities. The level of anti-Spike/RBD antibodies was measured at 2-12 weeks after complete vaccination, using chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (SARS-CoV-2 IgG II Quant Abbott). Results: We have analyzed 635 serum samples collected from volunteers living in 21 Residential Care Facilities. With one exception, in which the vaccination was done with the Moderna vaccine, all volunteers received the Pfizer-Comirnaty vaccine. Individuals enrolled in the study had ages between 65-110 years (median 79 years). Of the people tested, 54.8% reported at least one comorbidity and 59.2% reported having had COVID-19 before vaccination. The presence of anti-S/RBD antibodies at a protective level was detected in 98.7% of those tested (n = 627 persons) with a wide variation of antibody levels, from 7.1 to 5,680 BAU/ml (median 1287 BAU/ml). Antibody levels appeared to be significantly correlated to previous infection (r = 0.302, p = 0.000). Conclusions: The study revealed the presence of anti-SARS CoV-2 antibodies in a significant percentage of those tested (98.7%). Of these, more than half had high antibody levels. Pre-vaccination COVID-19 was the only factor found to be associated with higher anti-S/RBD levels. The significant response in elderly people, even in those with comorbidities, supports the vaccination measure for this category, irrespective of associated disabilities or previous infection.

The continuous variability of SARS-CoV-2 and the rapid waning of specific antibodies threatens the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines. We aimed to evaluate antibody kinetics one year after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination with an mRNA vaccine in healthcare workers (HCW), with or without a booster. A marked decline in anti-Spike(S)/Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) antibody levels was registered during the first eight months post-vaccination, followed by a transitory increase after the booster. At three months post-booster an increased antibody level was maintained only in HCW vaccinated after a prior infection, who also developed a higher and long-lasting level of anti-S IgA antibodies. Still, IgG anti-nucleocapsid (NCP) fades five months post-SARS-CoV-2 infection. Despite the decline in antibodies one-year post-vaccination, 68.2% of HCW preserved the neutralization capacity against the ancestral variant, with a decrease of only 17.08% in the neutralizing capacity against the Omicron variant. Nevertheless, breakthrough infections were present in 6.65% of all participants, without any correlation with the previous level of anti-S/RBD IgG. Protection against the ancestral and Omicron variants is maintained at least three months after a booster in HCW, possibly reflecting a continuous antigenic stimulation in the professional setting.

Malaria is the most common disease in the tropical areas and the most common imported disease in the non endemic areas, being considered by WHO a public health issue. About half of the world population lives in zones where there is a malaria risk, and in 2008 were reported 243 million malaria cases and 863.000 deaths. Europe was declared "malaria-free" by WHO in 1975. However there are still cases, most of them imported due to migration and travelling to high risk zones. In 2008 in Europe were reported 5848 imported cases in 25 countries. In recent years there were sporadic indigenous cases in Spain (2009) and Greece (2009, 2011), but the risk of malaria transmission in Europe is considered low in present. In Romania since 1961 indigenous transmission was interrupted, and starting with 1963 we are in the maintenance phase of malaria eradication. in the period 2007-2010 were reported 68 cases of malaria, all imported (24 cases in 2007, 13 cases in 2008, 12 cases in 2009 and 19 cases in 2010) and one death in 2007 (to a man aged 40 years infected in Uganda and who developed a toxic form of malaria with Plasmodium falciparum). Most cases of malaria (94.1%) were recorded in men who have traveled for work in Africa (83.8%), and who were infected with Plasmodium falciparum (67.7% of cases). Occurrence of malaria cases in non endemic areas is possible by the increasing number of people who travel in the risk areas and/ or ignoring and not following prevention measures, respectively chemoprophylaxis and personal protective measures against mosquito's bites.

Between 2014 and 2017, 6,662 Enterobacterales and 1,953 P. aeruginosa isolates were collected by 19 centers in four central European countries and Israel. A further 2,585 Enterobacterales and 707 P. aeruginosa isolates were collected in 2018 by 28 centers in seven European countries and Israel as part of the Antimicrobial Testing Leadership and Surveillance (ATLAS) study. A central laboratory performed antimicrobial susceptibility testing using broth microdilution panels according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines. Susceptibility rates among Enterobacterales were highest to ceftazidime-avibactam (≥98.5%), colistin (≥97.3%), and meropenem (≥95.8%). Ceftazidime-resistant and multidrug-resistant (MDR) Enterobacterales subsets were highly susceptible to ceftazidime-avibactam (≥94.9%) and colistin (≥94.7%). Susceptibility rates to colistin among all P. aeruginosa were ≥97.4% and were ≥96.3% among ceftazidime-resistant and MDR subsets. Susceptibility rates to ceftazidime-avibactam were 91.9% (2014-2017), 86.3% (2018) and, in common with comparator agents, were lower among ceftazidime-resistant (≥51.7%) and MDR isolates (≥57.1%).

OBJECTIVE: Antibiotic resistance evaluation of Gram-positive cocci isolated in 2008. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed for 1044 strains: 610 Staphylococcus aureus (352 from patients, 258 from carriers), 203 Streptococcus pneumoniae (53 from patients, 150 from carriers), 144 Enterococcus faecalis. 57 Enterococcus faecium and 30 Streptococcus spp. using automatic systems Vitek 2 Compact. MicroScan, disc diffusion method and Etest according to 2008 CLSI. A number of 497 Streptococcus pyogenes strains were tested for eritromycin resistance. RESULTS: There were 33.2% MRSA for strains isolated from patients and 30.0% from carriers. From MRSA strains. 35.5% were resistant to gentamicin. 33.6% to ciprofloxacin, 74.3% to erythromycin and 30.5% to rifampin. There were no S. aureus strain resistant to vancomycin and linezolid. S. aureus strains isolated from wounds were more resistant to erythromycin (43.9%) than the strains isolated from systemic infections (12.1%). From 11 S. pneumoniae strains isolated from meningitis, 4 were resistant to penicillin. Neither S. pneumoniae strain isolated from other infections, nor those from carriers had MIC to penicillin more than 4 microg/ml. S. pneumoniae strains isolated from carriers were more resistant to erythromycin. clindamycin and tetracycline than the strains isolated from patients (66.7%, 54.1%, 54.2% vs. 27.4%, 22.6%, 33.9%). E. faecium was 95.9% resistant to penicillin, 90.2% to ampicillin, 64.7% to gentamicin, 72.0% to streptomycin and 78.4% to ciprofloxacin. F. faecalis was less resistant than E. faecium at most of the antibiotics: 32.4% to gentamicin, 59.6% to streptomycin, 28.5% to ciprofloxacin. Viridans group Streptococci, all isolated from blood culture were 92% susceptible to penicillin and ampicillin. To erythromycin, 12% of viridians group Streptococci were resistant. S. pyogenes resistance to eritromycin was 5.8%. CONCLUSIONS: S. aureus strains showed a relatively high level of resistance to oxacillin (33.2%) and resistance in the same time to several antibiotics. S. pneumoniae can not be considered resistant to penicillin administrated parenteral, with exception of the strains isolated from meningitis. E. faecium had a higher resistance rate than E. faecalis.
