BACKGROUND: Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) practice improves newborn survival and child development through preventing hypothermia in newborns, improving early initiation of breastfeeding practice, and strengthening mother-child bonding. Despite having numerous benefits, it is one of the least practiced interventions in low and middle-income countries (1 to 74%). In Bangladesh, the prevalence of SSC was 26% in 2014. In this study, we aimed to estimate the prevalence of SSC in the study districts and identify factors that facilitate or inhibit SSC practice so that context-specific recommendations can be made to advance the use of this intervention. METHODS: We used baseline household survey data of USAID's MaMoni MNCSP project conducted in 10 districts of Bangladesh in 2019. Our analysis included 13,695 recently delivered women (RDW) with a live birth outcome. Our primary outcome was the mother's reported practice of SSC. We examined various antepartum, intrapartum, newborn, and sociodemographic factors associated with SSC using a multivariable generalized linear model. Our findings were reported using adjusted Prevalence Risk Ratios (aPRRs) and 95% Confidence Intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Overall, 28% of RDW reported practicing SSC across the 10 surveyed districts. Our multivariable analysis showed that public facility delivery (aPRR 2.01; 95%CI: 1.80, 2.26), private facility delivery (aPRR 1.23; 95%CI: 1.06, 1.42) and ≥ 4 antenatal care (ANC) visits at least one from a medically trained provider (MTP) (aPRR 1.17; 95%CI: 1.03, 1.26) had a significant positive association with SSC practice. Caesarean section (aPRR 0.64; 95%CI: 0.56, 0.73) had a significant negative association with SSC practice compared to vaginal births. We also found a significant positive association of SSC practice with mothers' who perceived the birth size of their baby to be small, mothers with a higher education level (≥10 years), and mothers from households in the highest wealth quintile. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of SSC is very low in the surveyed districts of Bangladesh. Considering the factors associated with SSC, relevant stakeholders need to increase their efforts on improving ANC and facility delivery coverages as well as improving SSC practice in the facilities especially after caesarean deliveries. Countries with a high burden of home deliveries, also need to emphasize community-based interventions and increasing coverage of skilled birth attendance for improving this life-saving intervention.

Ebola virus (EBOV), a non-segmented single-stranded RNA virus, is often-most transmitted through body fluids like sweat, tears, saliva, and nasal secretions. Till date, there is no licensed vaccine of EBOV is available in the market; however, the world is increasingly vulnerable to this emerging threat. Hence, it is the need of time to develop a vaccine for EBOV to hinder its dissemination. The current study has been designed for identification and characterization of the potential B and T-cell epitopes using the Immuno-informatics tools, and it helped in finding the potent vaccine candidates against EBOV. Prediction, antigenicity and allergenicity testing of predicted B and T cells' epitopes was done as well to identify their potential as a vaccine candidate and to measure their safety level respectively. Among B-cell epitopes "WIPAGIGVTGVIIA" showed a high antigenicity score and it would play an important role in evoking the immune response. In T-cell epitopes, peptides "AIGLAWIPY" and "IRGFPRCRY" presented high antigenicity score, which binds to MHC class-I and MHC class-II alleles respectively. All predicted epitopes were analyzed and compared with already reported peptides carefully. Comparatively, Peptides predicted in the present study showed more immunogenicity score than already reported peptides, used as positive control, and are more immunogenic as compared to them. Peptides reported in the present study do not target only Zaire EBOV (ZEBOV), as in previous studies, but also other species, i.e. Tai Forest EBOV (TAFV), Sudan EBOV (SUDV), Bundibugyo EBOV (BDBV), and Reston EBOV (RESTV) and would bring the promising results as potent vaccine candidates.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infection (UTI) in pregnancy, including asymptomatic bacteriuria, is associated with maternal morbidity and adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth and low birthweight. In low-middle income countries (LMICs), the capacity for screening and treatment of UTIs is limited. The objective of this study was to describe the population-based prevalence, risk factors, etiology and antimicrobial resistance patterns of UTIs in pregnancy in Bangladesh. METHODS: In a community-based cohort in Sylhet district, Bangladesh, urine specimens were collected at the household level in 4242 pregnant women (< 20 weeks gestation) for culture and antibiotic susceptibility testing. Basic descriptive analysis was performed, as well as logistic regression to calculate adjusted odds ratios (aOR) for UTI risk factors. RESULTS: The prevalence of UTI was 8.9% (4.4% symptomatic UTI, 4.5% asymptomatic bacteriuria). Risk factors for UTI in this population included maternal undernutrition (mid-upper arm circumference <23 cm: aOR= 1.29, 95% CI: 1.03-1.61), primiparity (aOR= 1.45, 95% CI: 1.15-1.84), and low paternal education (no education: aOR= 1.56, 95% CI: 1.09-2.22). The predominant uro-pathogens were E. coli (38% of isolates), Klebsiella (12%), and staphyloccocal species (23%). Group B streptococcus accounted for 5.3% of uro-pathogens. Rates of antibiotic resistance were high, with only two-thirds of E. coli susceptible to 3rd generation cephalosporins. CONCLUSIONS: In Sylhet, Bangladesh, one in 11 women had a UTI in pregnancy, and approximately half of cases were asymptomatic. There is a need for low-cost and accurate methods for UTI screening in pregnancy and efforts to address increasing rates of antibiotic resistance in LMIC.

INTRODUCTION: The role of screening and treatment for abnormal vaginal flora (AVF) on adverse pregnancy outcomes remains unclear. Using data from women who participated in a population-based cluster randomized trial who were screened and treated for AVF, we report risk factors for AVF and association of persistent AVF with adverse perinatal outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Pregnant women (n = 4221) <19 weeks of gestation provided self-administered mid-vaginal swabs; smears were Nugent-scored. AVF was treated with oral clindamycin; if AVF was present 3 weeks after treatment, persistent AVF was re-treated. We examined risk factors for AVF and the association of persistent AVF with adverse pregnancy outcomes. RESULTS: The prevalence of AVF was 16.5%: 9.8% of women had bacterial vaginosis and 6.8% had intermediate flora. Lower economic and educational status of women were associated with increased risk of AVF. One-third of women with AVF had persistent abnormal flora; these women had a higher risk of a composite measure of adverse pregnancy outcomes from 20 to <37 weeks (preterm live birth, preterm still birth, late miscarriage) (relative risk [RR] 1.33, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.07-1.65) and of late miscarriage alone (RR 4.15, 95% CI 2.12-8.12) compared to women without AVF. CONCLUSIONS: In this study in Sylhet District, Bangladesh, rates of AVF and persistent AVF were high and persistent AVF was associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, with an especially high associated risk for late miscarriage. Further characterization of the microbiome and relative bacterial species density associated with persistent AVF is needed.

Since Ni-rich soils are a threat to the environment, growing edible crops on Ni-rich soils can pose a serious risk to human, animal, plant and ecosystem health and, hence, is considered as a challenging task for the researchers. Contrarily, limiting the bioavailability of Ni in such soils upon the addition of suitable amendments cum foliar spray of proteinogenic amino acids having an objective to alleviate stress to crop plants can considerably reduce the environmental risk. In this pot trail, we substantiate the effects of biochar (BR) and zeolite (ZL) addition in the soil along with proline (PN) spray on the resistance, and stress responses of wheat against Ni as well as on Ni translocation and accumulation in wheat plants grown on a Ni-rich soil contaminated by electroplating effluent. The treatments, applied with and without PN spray, involved: no amendment; BR; ZL; and a concoction of both amendments (BR50%+ZL50%). We found that BR50%+ZL50% treatment significantly immobilized Ni in the soil, reduced its accumulation in the shoot, root, and grain, blocked membrane lipid peroxidation and showed an improvement in photosynthetic parameters, the status of antioxidant activities, grain biochemistry and grain yield, compared to the control. Interestingly, exogenous PN spray caused a significant additive effect on the aforementioned parameters in the wheat plants grown on BR50%+ZL50% treated soil. Our results involved a reduced Ni bioavailability in wheat rhizosphere due to BR50%+ZL50% in soil and, furthermore, the additive effect of PN spray to scavenging ROS, obstructing peroxidation of lipid membrane and, thus providing resilience to wheat plant against Ni stress. The suggested technique can make Ni-rich soils suitable for cultivation and production of high-quality food by minimizing Ni bioavailability and toxicity to plants.

BACKGROUND: In low-income settings, community health workers (CHWs) are frequently the first point of contact for newborns. Mobile technology may aid health workers in classifying illness and providing referral and management guidance for newborn care. This study evaluates the potential for mobile health technology to improve diagnosis and case management of newborns in Bangladesh. METHODS: A mobile application based on Bangladesh's Comprehensive Newborn Care Package national guidelines (mCNCP) was developed to aid CHWs in identifying and managing small and sick infants. After a 2-day training, CHWs assessed newborns at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital and in the Projahnmo research site (Sylhet, Bangladesh) using either mCNCP or a comparable paper form (pCNCP), similar to standard IMCI-formatted paper forms. CHWs were randomized to conduct a block of ~ 6 newborn assessments starting with either mCNCP or pCNCP, then switched to the alternate method. Physicians using mCNCP served as gold standard assessors. CHW performance with mCNCP and pCNCP were compared using chi-squared tests of independence for equality of proportions, and logistic regressions clustered by CHW. RESULTS: Two hundred seven total CHW assessments were completed on 101 enrolled infants. mCNCP assessments were more often fully completed and completed faster than pCNCP assessments (100% vs 23.8%, p < 0.001; 17.5 vs 23.6 min; p < 0.001). mCNCP facilitated calculations of respiratory rate, temperature, and gestational age. CHWs using mCNCP were more likely to identify small newborns (Odds Ratio (OR): 20.8, Confidence Interval (CI): (7.1, 60.8), p < 0.001), and to correctly classify 7 out of 16 newborn conditions evaluated, including severe weight loss (OR: 13.1, CI: (4.6, 37.5), p < 0.001), poor movement (OR: 6.6, CI: (2.3, 19.3), p = 0.001), hypothermia (OR: 14.9, CI: (2.7, 82.2), p = 0.002), and feeding intolerance (OR: 2.1, CI: (1.3, 3.3), p = 0.003). CHWs with mCNCP were more likely to provide counseling as needed on 4 out of 7 case management recommendations evaluated, including kangaroo mother care. CONCLUSIONS: CHWs in rural Bangladesh with limited experience using tablets successfully used a mobile application for neonatal assessment after a two-day training. mCNCP may aid frontline health workers in Bangladesh to improve completion of neonatal assessment, classification of illnesses, and adherence to neonatal management guidelines.

Survivin (IAP proteins) is considered as a significant target for anticancer drug research owing to its upregulation in tumor cells to mediate resistance to apoptotic stimulus. The current study aimed to investigate phytochemicals as inhibitors of survivin with caspases to reactivate the functioning of caspases through molecular docking. The compounds namely 2(R), 4(R)-dihydroxypyrrolidine, 4-hydroxy-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,1-dioxo-3,4-dihydrothieno[3,2-e]thiazine-6-sulfonamide, 2,3-Diketo-L-gulonic acid, (3-hydroxy-2-octadeca-9,12-dienoyloxypropyl) octadecanoate, 2-[[4-[[4-[(4-formamido-1-methylimidazole-2-carbonyl)amino]-1-methylimidazole-2-carbonyl]amino]-1-methylimidazole-2-carbonyl]amino]ethyl-dimethylazanium, Picolinic acid and (2-Hydroxy-5-nitrophenyl) dihydrogen phosphate successfully bind inside the pocket of survivin. ADMETsar was used to evaluate the anticancer potential of selected compounds. These compounds can be proposed as effective inhibitors, disrupting the survivin-caspases interaction and reactivating the caspases function of apoptosis. The study might facilitate the development of cost-effective and natural drugs against cancer. However, further validation is essential for confirmation of its drug efficacy and bio-compatibility.

The two-component system (TCS) gene family is among the most important signal transduction families in plants and is involved in the regulation of various abiotic stresses, cell growth and division. To understand the role of TCS genes in mango (Mangifera indica ), a comprehensive analysis of TCS gene family was carried out in mango leading to identification of 65 MiTCS genes. Phylogenetic analysis divided MiTCSs into three groups (histidine kinases, histidine-containing phosphotransfer proteins, and response regulators) and 11 subgroups. One tandem duplication and 23 pairs of segmental duplicates were found within the MiTCSs . Promoter analysis revealed that MiTCSs contain a large number of cis -elements associated with environmental stresses, hormone response, light signalling, and plant development. Gene ontology analysis showed their involvement in various biological processes and molecular functions, particularly signal transduction. Protein-protein interaction analysis showed that MiTCS proteins interacted with each other. The expression pattern in various tissues and under many stresses (drought, cold, and disease) showed that expression levels varied among various genes in different conditions. MiTCSs 3D structure predictions showed structural conservation among members of the same groups. This information can be further used to develop improved cultivars and will serve as a foundation for gaining more functional insights into the TCS gene family.

Drought is one of the main environmental stressors that can alter the water status of plants; negatively affect growth, assimilation, and photosynthesis; and eventually reduce crop yield. We explored the dependence of drought tolerance traits on chlorophyll-A content. Local sunflower cultivars (FH-01, FH-628, FH-633, FH-572, and FH-653) were grown in pots and subjected to drought by withholding water for 10, 15, or 20 d. One month after germination, the leaves of the treated and non-treated plants were collected and subjected to biochemical analyses. Under different water stress levels, the levels of peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and proline increased, whereas those of chlorophyll-A decreased. Regression analysis clearly found that proline (-0.442), POD (-0.528), SOD (-0.532), and CAT (-0.814) have negative beta coefficient values. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the LHC gene family is divided into six clades. Subcellular locations indicated that most LHC genes were located in the chloroplast; however, only few genes were present in the peroxisomes and endoplasmic reticulum. Our research found that Arabidopsis thaliana LHC genes were highly homologous to the LHC genes of Helianthus annuus. Furthermore, the LHC genes of both species are located in the chloroplasts; therefore, they play a role in photosynthesis and renewable energy production. This study opens a new horizon for discussing the role of chlorophyll-A in the drought-related traits of sunflowers.

Sunflower is an important oil-seed crop in Pakistan, it is mainly cultivated in the spring season. It is severely affected by drought stress resulting in lower yield. Cuticular wax acts as the first defense line to protect plants from drought stress condition. It seals the aerial parts of plants and reduce the water loss from leaf surfaces. Various myeloblastosis (MYB) transcription factors (TFs) are involved in biosynthesis of epicuticular waxes under drought-stress. However, less information is available for MYB, TFs in drought stress and wax biosynthesis in sunflower. We used different computational tools to compare the Arabidopsis MYB, TFs involved in cuticular wax biosynthesis and drought stress tolerance with sunflower genome. We identified three putative MYB genes (MYB16, MYB94 and MYB96) in sunflower along with their seven homologs in Arabidopsis. Phylogenetic association of MYB TFs in Arabidopsis and sunflower indicated strong conservation of TFs in plant species. From gene structure analysis, it was observed that intron and exon organization was family-specific. MYB TFs were unevenly distributed on sunflower chromosomes. Evolutionary analysis indicated the segmental duplication of the MYB gene family in sunflower. Quantitative Real-Time PCR revealed the up-regulation of three MYB genes under drought stress. The gene expression of MYB16, MYB94 and MYB96 were found many folds higher in experimental plants than control. The present study provided the first insight into MYB TFs family's characterization in sunflower under drought stress conditions and wax biosynthesis TFs.

Tribulus terrestris (T.T.) is a rich source of flavonoids and saponins, which have been reported to have neuroprotective and antioxidant potential. The current study was planned to investigate the anti-Parkinson's activity of T. terrestris methanol extract (TTME). It was hypothesized that TTME possessed antioxidant potential and can ameliorate Parkinson's disease (PD) via modulation of α-synuclein, acetylcholinesterase (AChE), TNF-α, and IL-1ß. To test this hypothesis, in silico and in vivo studies were performed. The PD model in rats was prepared by giving haloperidol, 1 mg/kg, i.p. Rats were divided into six groups: control, disease control, standard, and treatment groups receiving TTME orally at 100, 300, and 1000 mg/kg dose levels for 21 days. Behavioral observations and biochemical analyses were done. The TTME modulatory effect on mRNA expression of α-synuclein, AChE, TNF-α, and interleukins in the brain homogenate was estimated by RT-PCR. Compounds detected in HPLC analysis disrupted the catalytic triad of AChE in in silico studies. Behavioral observations showed significant (p < 0.05) improvement in a reversal of catatonia, muscular strength, locomotor functions, stride length, and exploration in a dose-dependent manner (1000 >300 >100 mg/kg) of PD rats. Endogenous antioxidant enzyme levels CAT, SOD, GSH, and GPx were significantly restored at a high dose (p < 0.05) with a notable (p < 0.05) decrease in the MDA level in TTME-treated groups. TTME at a high dose significantly (p < 0.05) decreased the level of acetylcholinesterase. RT-PCR results are showing down-regulation in the mRNA expression levels of IL-1ß, α -synuclein, TNF-α, and AChE in TTME-treated groups compared to the disease control group, indicating neuroprotection. It is concluded that TTME has potential to ameliorate the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

In this study, the Sr22 gene was isolated and prepared for transformation in disease-susceptible commercial high-yielding wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar Lasani-2008. The Sr22 fragment was initially inserted in plasmid pUC57 for sequence confirmation before performing further experiments. After confirmation, Sr22 was subcloned in pGreen0029 which helped in further cloning and ligation. pUC57-Sr22 was restricted with Nru1 and BamH1, while pGreen0029 was restricted with EcoRV and BamH1 and ligated. From pGreen0029, Sr22 was eluted and ligated in pJIT163 to insert the 2 × 35S promoter and CaMV terminator using Xho1 and BamH1 and Sal1. At this stage, the expression cassette was completed. The 2 × 35Sp-Sr22-CaMVt was then ligated in pGreen0029 and transferred to Agrobacterium along with pSOUP. pSOUP helped pGreen0029 to insert 2X35Sp-Sr22-CaMVt in the callus of Lasani-2008, along with kanamycin-resistant gene. Transgenic callus was used for regeneration of the whole plant by tissue culture. Transgenic plants were further tested by PCR, qPCR and SDS-PAGE. The transgenic Lasani-2008 showed substantial resistance against stem rust in both seedling and adult plant stages. The results also showed that transgenic Lasani-2008 has increased average yield of grains (i.e., 4893 ± 148 kg/ha) as compared to non-transgenic Lasani-2008 (i.e., with average yield of gains 4762 ± 103 kg/ha). Sr22 containing lines and the transgenic developed in this study can be used in breeding systems. Transgenic seeds developed will be shared with breeding institutes and breeders should use this information to develop new varieties.

BACKGROUND: Severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (>20 mg/dL) affects ∼1 million infants annually. Improved jaundice screening in low-income countries is needed to prevent bilirubin encephalopathy and mortality. METHODS: The Bili-ruler is an icterometer for the assessment of neonatal jaundice that was designed by using advanced digital color processing. A total of 790 newborns were enrolled in a validation study at Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston) and Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital (Sylhet, Bangladesh). Independent Bili-ruler measurements were made and compared with reference standard transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) and total serum bilirubin (TSB) concentrations. RESULTS: Bili-ruler scores on the nose were correlated with TcB and TSB levels (r = 0.76 and 0.78, respectively). The Bili-ruler distinguished different clinical thresholds of hyperbilirubinemia, defined by TcB, with high sensitivity and specificity (score ≥3.5: 90.1% [95% confidence interval (CI): 84.8%-95.4%] and 85.9% [95% CI: 83.2%-88.6%], respectively, for TcB ≥13 mg/dL). The Bili-ruler also performed reasonably well compared to TSB (score ≥3.5: sensitivity 84.5% [95% CI: 79.1%-90.3%] and specificity 83.2% [95% CI: 76.1%-90.3%] for TSB ≥11 mg/dL). Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve for identifying TcB ≥11, ≥13, and ≥15 were 0.92, 0.93, and 0.94, respectively, and 0.90, 0.87, and 0.86 for identifying TSB ≥11, ≥13, and ≥15. Interrater reliability was high; 97% of scores by independent readers fell within 1 score of one another (N = 88). CONCLUSIONS: The Bili-ruler is a low-cost, noninvasive tool with high diagnostic accuracy for neonatal jaundice screening. This device may be used to improve referrals from community or peripheral health centers to higher-level facilities with capacity for bilirubin testing and/or phototherapy.

BACKGROUND: One-third of preterm births are attributed to pregnancy infections. We implemented a community-based intervention to screen and treat maternal genitourinary tract infections, with the aim of reducing the incidence of preterm birth. METHODS: We did an unblinded cluster-randomised controlled trial in two subdistricts of Sylhet, Bangladesh. Clusters were defined as the contiguous area served by a single community health worker, and each cluster comprised several contiguous villages, contained roughly 4000 people, and had about 120 births per year. Eligible participants within clusters were all ever-married women and girls of reproductive age (ie, aged 15-49 years) who became pregnant during the study period. Clusters were randomly assigned (1:1) to the intervention or control groups via a restricted randomisation procedure. In both groups, community health workers made home visits to identify pregnant women and girls and provide antenatal and postnatal care. Between 13 and 19 weeks' gestation, participants in the intervention group received home-based screening for abnormal vaginal flora and urinary tract infections. A random 10% of the control group also received the intervention to examine the similarity of infection prevalence between groups. If present, abnormal vaginal flora (ie, Nugent score ≥4 was treated with oral clindamycin (300 mg twice daily for 5 days) and urinary tract infections with cefixime (400 mg once daily for 3 days) or oral nitrofurantoin (100 mg twice daily for 7 days). Both infections were retreated if persistent. The primary outcome was the incidence of preterm livebirths before 37 weeks' gestation among all livebirths. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01572532. The trial is closed to new participants, with follow-up completed. FINDINGS: Between Jan 2, 2012, and July 28, 2015, 9712 pregnancies were enrolled (4840 in the intervention group, 4391 in the control group, and 481 in the control subsample). 3818 livebirths in the intervention group and 3557 livebirths in the control group were included in the primary analysis. In the intervention group, the prevalence of abnormal vaginal flora was 16·3% (95% CI 15·1-17·6) and that of urinary tract infection was 8·6% (7·7-9·5). The effective coverage of successful treatment in the intervention group was 58% in participants with abnormal vaginal flora (ie, abnormal vaginal flora resolved in 361 [58%] of the 622 participants who initially tested positive), and 71% in those with urinary tract infections (ie, resolution in 224 [71%] of the 317 participants who initially tested positive). Overall, the incidence of preterm livebirths before 37 weeks' gestation did not differ significantly between the intervention and control groups (21·8% vs 20·6%; relative risk 1·07 [95% CI 0·91-1·24]). INTERPRETATION: A population-based antenatal screening and treatment programme for genitourinary tract infections did not reduce the incidence of preterm birth in Bangladesh. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the Alliance for Maternal and Newborn Health Improvement (AMANHI) gestational age study is to develop and validate a programmatically feasible and simple approach to accurately assess gestational age of babies after they are born. The study will provide accurate, population-based rates of preterm birth in different settings and quantify the risks of neonatal mortality and morbidity by gestational age and birth weight in five South Asian and sub-Saharan African sites. METHODS: This study used on-going population-based cohort studies to recruit pregnant women early in pregnancy (<20 weeks) for a dating ultrasound scan. Implementation is harmonised across sites in Ghana, Tanzania, Zambia, Bangladesh and Pakistan with uniform protocols and standard operating procedures. Women whose pregnancies are confirmed to be between 8 to 19 completed weeks of gestation are enrolled into the study. These women are followed up to collect socio-demographic and morbidity data during the pregnancy. When they deliver, trained research assistants visit women within 72 hours to assess the baby for gestational maturity. They assess for neuromuscular and physical characteristics selected from the Ballard and Dubowitz maturation assessment scales. They also measure newborn anthropometry and assess feeding maturity of the babies. Computer machine learning techniques will be used to identify the most parsimonious group of signs that correctly predict gestational age compared to the early ultrasound date (the gold standard). This gestational age will be used to categorize babies into term, late preterm and early preterm groups. Further, the ultrasound-based gestational age will be used to calculate population-based rates of preterm birth. IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY: The AMANHI gestational age study will make substantial contribution to improve identification of preterm babies by frontline health workers in low- and middle- income countries using simple evaluations. The study will provide accurate preterm birth estimates. This new information will be crucial to planning and delivery of interventions for improving preterm birth outcomes, particularly in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

Drug resistance is becoming alarming with the passage of time worldwide in general and in third world countries in particular. Human urine specimens of patients of urinary tract infection at Sheikh Zayed hospital, Lahore, Pakistan were analyzed for drug resistance in Escherichia coli. A total of 69 Escherichia coli isolates from human urine specimens were obtained and screened for their antibiograms. A total of seven antibiotic resistance profiles were obtained with over 65% of the isolates showing multi-drug resistance. Very high resistance levels were detected against augmentin and gentamicin (87.5 &77.5 % respectively) while imipenem and tazocin recorded the least resistance levels (32.5% and 12.5% respectively) among the isolates.

Advanced generations of different transgenic lines of indica basmati rice (Basmati-370) expressing two unrelated Bt genes, cry1Ac and cry2A were evaluated for resistance to Yellow Stem Borer (YSB) and Rice Leaf Folder (RLF) under field conditions compared to control lines over three years (2003-2005). Homozygous lines were selected and analyzed for insect resistance, morphological, physiochemical properties and risk assessment studies. After artificial infestation of target insects, the transgenic plants showed significant resistance. Data were recorded in terms of dead hearts and white heads at vegetative and flowering stage respectively. Transgenic lines showed up to 100 and 96 percent resistance against yellow stem borer at vegetative and flowering stages, respectively. Natural damage of rice leaf folder was also observed during the year 2005. The transgenic plants were 98 percent more resistant as compared to untransformed control plants. Variations in some morphological characteristics, e.g., the average number of tillers, plant height and maturity were also observed. Transgenic lines produced 40 percent more grains than control plants. All these characteristics were stably inherited in advanced generations. The transgenic lines had no significant effect on non-target insects (insects belonging to orders other than Lepidoptera and Diptera) in field or under storage conditions. Chances of pollen-mediated gene flow were recorded at a rate of 0.14 percent.
