The present study aimed to evaluate the role of Hedgehog (Hh) molecule expression in association with the clinical aspects of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), as well as angiogenesis and CD163+ macrophages. Twenty-eight cases of OSCC, nine cases of tumor-free resection margins (TM), and four cases of non-neoplastic oral mucosa (NNM) were submitted to immunohistochemistry to detect proteins Sonic Hedgehog (SHH), Indian Hedgehog (IHH), GLI1, CD163, and CD105. Protein colocalization with respect to SHH/CD163, IHH/CD163, GLI1/CD163, and GLI1/CD105 was assessed by immunohistochemical double staining. In tumor parenchyma, SHH and IHH were present in the cytoplasm of neoplastic cells, while GLI1 was observed in cytoplasm and nucleus. Endothelial cells were found to express SHH, IHH, and GLI1 within CD105+ vessels, and a positive correlation between infiltrating macrophage density (IMD) and microvascular density (MVD) was observed in cases of OSCC and TM. When compared to TM and NNM, the OSCC cases demonstrated higher immunoreactivity for SHH (p = 0.01), IHH (p = 0.39), GLI1 (p = 0.03), IMD (p = 0.0002), and MVD (p = 0.0002). Our results suggest the participation of the Hh pathway in OSCC by way of autocrine and paracrine signaling, in addition to the participation of both SHH and IHH ligands. Endothelial cells were also found to exhibit positivity with respect to Hh pathway components and we surmise that these molecules may play a role in tumor angiogenesis. CD163+ macrophages were also observed to express IHH, a ligand of this pathway, in addition to being associated with tumor neovascularization.

The pleomorphic adenoma (PA), mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC), and adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) are common tumors arising from salivary glands whose histopathology is heterogeneous. The sonic hedgehog signaling pathway (Hh) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) play important roles in cell proliferation, favoring tumor growth. The aim of this investigation was to study components of the Hh pathway, as well as STAT3 in salivary gland neoplasms in an attempt to add information about the biological characteristics of these neoplasms. We used 9 cases of PA, 17 cases of ACC, and 20 cases of MEC. Using immunohistochemistry, SHH, GLI1, SUFU, HHIP, and STAT3 were investigated. For comparative purposes, MCM3 (cellular proliferation marker) was also included. In PA, there was high expression of cytoplasmic SHH and SUFU and low expression of STAT3 and MCM3. In the ACC, there was high expression of GLI1, HHIP, and STAT3 and low expression of SHH, SUFU, and MCM3. In the MEC, we observed high expression of SHH, GLI1, SUFU, and HHIP and low expression of STAT3 and MCM3. There was a statistically significant difference between SHH (p = 0.0064), STAT3 (p = 0.0003), and MCM3 (p = 0.0257) when all tumors were compared and a higher expression in parenchyma for all tumors when stroma and parenchyma were compared (p < 0.05). These findings suggests a possible role of Hh pathway in the development and maintenance of the cytoarchitectural pattern of PA, ACC, and MEC, as well as the participation of STAT3 in the development of ACC, irrespective perineural infiltration.

BACKGROUND: New blood vessel formation events are essential for tumor clonal expansion and progression. Despite the importance of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) for tumor angiogenesis, few studies have evaluated the expression profile of this gene in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and tumor margins (TM). This study aimed to evaluate the expression of the VEGFA gene and its protein in OSCC and TM. METHODS: Gene expression was evaluated in cryopreserved samples of OSCCs (n = 44), TM (n = 7), and normal mucosa from healthy patients (n = 3; NM). Quantitative PCRs were performed using the TaqMan system for the VEGFA gene, and gene expression was determined using the 2(-∆∆CQ) method. For immunohistochemical evaluation, 27 OSCC samples were embedded in a tissue microarray (TMA) block and reactions were performed using the Advance system. RESULTS: VEGFA transcript levels were 1.7-fold higher in OSCC than in NM samples. VEGFA mRNA was overexpressed in TM samples compared to NM (3.4-fold) and OSCC (2.0-fold) samples. VEGFA transcript level was overexpressed in T3-T4 tumors, metastatic lymph nodes, and stage III-IV OSCCs. Immunoreactivity of the VEGFA protein was detected in the cytoplasm of parenchymal and stromal cells, mainly in endothelial cells and fibroblasts. CONCLUSION: Our results show that VEGFA was overexpressed in aggressive OSCCs and that VEGFA expression may be an important prognostic factor in this type of cancer. Finally, tumor margins may be involved in the production of angiogenic molecules.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the interaction of stromal components in odontogenic tumors. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate mast cells (MCs), myofibroblasts, macrophages, and their possible association with angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis in keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty cases of KCOTs were included and analyzed by immunohistochemistry for mast cell tryptase, α-SMA, CD34, CD163, and D240. For comparative purpose, 15 radicular cysts (CRs) and 7 pericoronal follicles (PFs) were included. RESULTS: There was an increase in MCs for RCs and this difference was significant when they were compared to KCOTS and PFs. A significant increase in the density of MFs was observed for KCOTs when compared to RCs and PFs (P = 0.00). No significant difference in CD163-positive macrophages (P = 0.084) and CD34-positive vessels (P = 0.244) densities was observed between KCOTs, RCs, and PFs, although KCOTs showed a higher density of all proteins. Significant difference in lymphatic vessel density was observed for KCOTs when compared to RCs and PFs (P = 0.00). Positive correlation was observed between mast cell tryptase and CD34 in KCOTs (P = 0.025). CONCLUSIONS: A significant interaction between the MC population and CD34-positive vessels in KCOTs supported the hypothesis that MCs and blood vessels contribute to the stromal scaffold of KCOT.

BACKGROUND: Sonic hedgehog (SHH) pathway activation has been identified as a key factor in the development of many types of tumors, including odontogenic tumors. Our study examined the expression of genes in the SHH pathway to characterize their roles in the pathogenesis of keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KOT) and ameloblastomas (AB). METHODS: We quantified the expression of SHH, SMO, PTCH1, SUFU, GLI1, CCND1, and BCL2 genes by qPCR in a total of 23 KOT, 11 AB, and three non-neoplastic oral mucosa (NNM). We also measured the expression of proteins related to this pathway (CCND1 and BCL2) by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: We observed overexpression of SMO, PTCH1, GLI1, and CCND1 genes in both KOT (23/23) and AB (11/11). However, we did not detect expression of the SHH gene in 21/23 KOT and 10/11 AB tumors. Low levels of the SUFU gene were expressed in KOT (P = 0.0199) and AB (P = 0.0127) relative to the NNM. Recurrent KOT exhibited high levels of SMO (P = 0.035), PTCH1 (P = 0.048), CCND1 (P = 0.048), and BCL2 (P = 0.045) transcripts. Using immunolabeling of CCND1, we observed no statistical difference between primary and recurrent KOT (P = 0.8815), sporadic and NBCCS-KOT (P = 0.7688), and unicystic and solid AB (P = 0.7521). CONCLUSIONS: Overexpression of upstream (PTCH1 and SMO) and downstream (GLI1, CCND1 and BCL2) genes in the SHH pathway leads to the constitutive activation of this pathway in KOT and AB and may suggest a mechanism for the development of these types of tumors.

The aim of this study was to investigate the density of mast cells and microvessels in minor salivary gland tumors. Forty-one cases of minor salivary gland tumors (pleomorphic adenoma, n = 10; adenoid cystic carcinoma, n = 11; mucoepidermoid carcinoma, n = 10; and polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma) were investigated using immunohistochemistry for mast cell tryptase and von-Willebrand factor. Density of mast cells was higher in mucoepidermoid carcinoma; however, no differences in the number of these cells were observed between the different types of tumors (p > 0.05). The number of mast cells was higher in periparenchymal areas in all tumors, but the difference was not significant (p > 0.05). Mucoepidermoid carcinoma showed the largest number of periparenchymal mast cells, whereas pleomorphic adenomas showed the smallest number of intraparenchymal mast cells (p > 0.05). The highest microvessel density was observed in mucoepidermoid carcinomas, being this difference statistically significant when mucoepidermoid carcinoma was compared to pleomorphic adenoma (p = 0.0034) and polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (p = 0.004). Microvessel density was significantly higher in adenoid cystic carcinoma when compared to pleomorphic adenoma (p = 0.0406) and polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (p = 0.0123). Comparison of mast cells and microvessel densities showed no significant difference between tumors. A quantitative difference in mast cells and microvessels was observed, particularly in mucoepidermoid carcinoma, a finding supporting the aggressive behavior of malignant salivary gland tumors without myoepithelial differentiation. Further studies are needed to determine the role of mast cells in angiogenesis, as well as in the development and biological behavior of these tumors.

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastomas and keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KOTs) are lesions that are characterized by locally invasive growth and cause extensive bone destruction. In addition, it is known that E-cadherin influences the adhesion of Langerhans cells (LCs) to keratinocytes. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: The aim of this study was to investigate, using immunohistochemistry, the distribution of CD1a-positive cells in ameloblastomas and KOTs and their relationship with E-cadherin, in comparison to calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT). RESULTS: The CD1a-positive LCs were observed in 11 ameloblastomas and KOTs. All of the cases of CCOT showed CD1a-positive LCs and a significant difference was found when this tumor was compared with ameloblastomas (P < 0.05, Mann-Whitney test). A statistically significant difference was also noted when comparing CD1a-positive LCs between CCOTs and KOTs (P < 0.05, Mann-Whitney test). Lower expression of E-cadherin in ameloblastomas (AMs) in relation to KOTs and CCOTs (P < 0.05, Fisher test) was observed. There was no correlation between E-cadherin and CD1a-positive LCs between all odontogenic tumors that were studied (P > 0.05, Spearman test). CONCLUSION: A quantitative difference of CD1a-positive cells between AMs and KOTs in comparison to CCOTs was observed. This permits to speculate that a depletion of CD1a-positive LCs might influence the local invasiveness of ameloblastomas and KOTs. Furthermore, it is suggested that E-cadherin mediates cell adhesion in these tumors.

The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of mast cells in a series of odontogenic tumors. Forty-five cases of odontogenic tumors were investigated using immunohistochemistry for mast cell triptase, and differences between groups were statistically evaluated. Mast cells were present in 96% of odontogenic tumors. Mast cells present in solid ameloblastoma were observed in the tumor stroma surrounding more solid and follicular epithelial islands, with or without squamous metaplasia. The odontogenic mixoma showed few mast cells. In odontogenic tumors with a cystic structure, the mast cells were distributed throughout all areas of the lesions, mainly in keratocystic odontogenic tumor. In addition, the total density of mast cells between all odontogenic tumors showed no significant difference (p > 0.05). A greater mast cells distribution was found in keratocystic odontogenic tumor in relation to adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (p < 0.01), and when the unicystic ameloblastoma and keratocistic odontogenic tumor were compared to the odontogenic myxoma (p < 0.05). Syndrome keratocystic odontogenic tumor showed a higher mean of mast cells when compared with the other tumors of the sample. Mast cells values presented by syndrome keratocystic odontogenic tumor were significantly greater than those of the sporadic keratocystic odontogenic tumor that were not associated with the syndrome (p = 0.03). Mast cells are probably one of the major components of the stromal scaffold in odontogenic tumors. We found significant differences of mast cells between syndrome nonsyndrome keratocystic odontogenic tumors, although their distribution did not seem to have any influence on the biologic behavior of benign odontogenic tumors.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of CD1a-positive Langerhans cells and their relationship with E-cadherin in minor salivary gland tumors. METHODS: Twenty-seven minor salivary gland tumors were investigated using immunohistochemistry for CD1a and E-cadherin. RESULTS: A significant difference regarding the mean density of CD1a-positive Langerhans cells was observed between pleomorphic adenomas and malignant tumors studied (P = 0.001). No CD1a-positive cells were detected in most cases (n = 5) of cystic adenoid carcinomas. CD1a-positive cells were detected in one mucoepidermoid carcinoma case, and six low-grade polymorphous adenocarcinomas cases. Comparison of the mean density of CD1a-positive cells between the three malignant tumors showed no significant difference (P = 0.127). No significant difference was observed in the presence of E-cadherin between tumors (P = 0.73), but it was detected in 24 cases. CONCLUSIONS: The lack of CD1a-positive in malignant salivary gland tumors facilitates the neoplastic development and suggests that these cells might be useful as auxiliary diagnostic and prognostic tool in minor salivary gland tumors. Furthermore, it is suggested that E-cadherin mediates cell adhesion in these tumors although we did not demonstrate significance.

Rattus norvegicus (Norway rat) is the main reservoir host of pathogenic Leptospira, the causative agent of leptospirosis, in urban environments. Pathogenic Leptospira forms biofilms in the environment, possibly contributing for bacterial survival and maintenance. Nonetheless, biofilms have not yet been studied in natural animal reservoirs presenting leptospiral renal carriage. Here, we described biofilm formation by pathogenic Leptospira inside the renal tubules of R. norvegicus naturally infected and captured in an urban slum endemic for leptospirosis. From the 65 rats carrying Leptospira in their kidneys, 24 (37%) presented biofilms inside the renal tubules. The intensity of leptospiral colonization in the renal tubules (OR: 1.00; 95% CI 1.05-1.1) and the type of occlusion pattern of the colonized renal tubules (OR: 3.46; 95% CI 1.20-9.98) were independently associated with the presence of Leptospira biofilm. Our data showed that Leptospira interrogans produce biofilms during renal chronic colonization in rat reservoirs, suggesting a possible role for leptospiral biofilms in the pathogenesis of leptospirosis and bacterial carriage in host reservoirs.

BACKGROUND: An inflammatory component consisting of cells and chemical mediators may influence the proliferation and dissemination of the oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). In the present study, we evaluated the possible relationship between Ki-67, tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), and COX-2 in OSCCs. In addition, the immunodetection of these proteins was associated with different histological grades of malignancy, including invasive and in situ tumors. METHODS: Twenty-seven OSCC cases were examined by light microscopy using criteria adopted WHO, and immunohistochemistry for Ki-67, CD68, and COX-2 using EnVision System in invasive and in situ lesions. Immunohistochemical detection of these proteins was assessed and scored for COX-2, and results were compared with their histological grades of malignancy. RESULTS: A correlation between Ki-67, COX-2, and CD68 was not found. Histological grade of malignancy (HDM) was associated with the Ki-67 immunostaining (P = 0.00), but this was not observed regarding both CD68 (P = 0.51) and COX-2 (P = 0.89). Furthermore, there was a COX-2 overexpression in 62.96% of the sample, and a high density of TAMs in both OSCCs and in situ carcinomas. CONCLUSIONS: Imunolabeling for Ki-67 was directly correlated with less-differentiated tumors, suggesting that this marker may contribute to understand the biological behavior of OSCC, and help to distinguish risk groups of OSCC. Furthermore, the lack of correlation between Ki-67, COX-2, and CD68 indicates that the latter two markers may play a pivotal role in oral carcinogenesis. However, further studies are needed to clarify their contribution for cell proliferation and tumor differentiation.

A 42-year-old woman had a sessile swelling that involved the maxillary gingiva corresponding to the right canine and premolar area. Clinical examination showed a painless small nodule (10 mm in diameter) located between the right maxillary canine and premolar. The lesion was vesicular, sessile, and slightly compressible on palpation. Microscopic examination of the lesion (following an excisional biopsy) showed cystic spaces covered by an epithelium lining that consisted of cuboidal and squamoid cells intermingled with clear cells. These morphologic findings were consistent with gingival cyst of the adult. Immunohistochemical technique against cytokeratins revealed that the epithelial cells were positive for cytokeratins No. 7, 8, 13, 14, and 19. Two years after removal, no recurrence was reported.

AIM: To investigate the immunohistochemical expression of Ki-67, p53 and p63 in Keratocyst Odontogenic Tumours (KOTs) in order to contribute to the biological profile of this tumor. METHODS: Immunohistochemical technique was performed using the EnVision System in 37 cases of KOTs. RESULTS: Ki-67- and p53-immunostained cells were mainly located in the suprabasal layers. p63-positive cells were found throughout the lining cystic epithelium. No difference in the immunostaining for these proteins was observed between primary and recurrent KOTs (Ki-67: P = 0.5591; p53: P = 0.9847; p63: P = 0.9127), or between KOTs associated with Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome (NBCCS) and sporadic KOTs (Ki-67: P = 0.7013; p53: P = 0.3197; p63: P = 0.2427). CONCLUSIONS: It is possible that biological behavior of KOTs may be related to suprabasal proliferative compartment in the cystic epithelium as observed by high levels of Ki-67, p53 and p63. In addition, p63 immunostaining may represent immaturity of keratinocytes in KOTs, and suggests that this protein may participate in the regulation of epithelial cell differentiation. Taken together, these data may favor tumorigenesis on KOTs.

The present study aims to assess the influence of Aluminum-Gallium-Indium-Phosphide laser (AlGaInP laser, λ = 660 nm), whether or not in association with the application of a membrane of bacterial cellulose (Nexfill™), during recovery from induced second-degree burns at the dorsum of Wistar rats. (Rattus norvegicus, Wistar). Forty-eight animals have been distributed into four groups: Control (burns remained untreated), Group I (laser-treated), Group II (treated with Nexfill), and Group III (laser + Nexfill™). In addition to a morphological analysis, immunohistochemical analysis has been performed for type I collagen, type III collagen, fibronectin, and laminin. The Fisher's Test was used to assess differences among groups (p < 0,05). A larger amount of collagen type III was observed in Control, Group II and Group III when compared with Group I (p < 0,05). Group I and Group III have shown a greater collagen deposition when compared with Group II (p < 0,05), but the amount of collagen was similar in Group I, Group III, and Control. Group III has shown larger fibronectin amounts in comparison with Group II (p < 0,05). As regards laminin, Group I has shown a predominant discontinuity pattern on the basal lamina in comparison with Control, Group II, and Group III (p < 0,05). It is concluded that in this current study the laser when used alone (Group I) hasn't influenced collagen deposition neither has it acted on fiber pattern (fibril and/or reticular). Moreover, laser application hasn't accelerated the repair of wounds caused by inflicted second-degree burns.

ß-Lapachone is a natural naphthoquinone originally obtained from the bark of the purple Ipe (Tabebuia avellanedae Lor, Bignoniaceae) and its therapeutic potential in human cancer cells has been evaluated in several studies. In this study, we examined the effects of ß-lapachone and its 3-iodine derivatives (3-I-α-lapachone and 3-I-ß-lapachone) on cell proliferation, cell death, and cancer-related gene expression in human oral squamous cell carcinoma cells. ß-Lapachone and its 3-iodine derivatives showed potent cytotoxicity against different types of human cancer cell lines. Indeed, treatment with these compounds induced cell cycle arrest at G2/M phase, followed by internucleosomal DNA fragmentation, and caused significant increases in phosphatidylserine externalization, caspase-8 and -9 activation, mitochondrial membrane depolarization, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and apoptotic cell death morphology. The apoptosis induced by the compounds was prevented by pretreatment with a pan-caspase inhibitor (Z-VAD-FMK) and an antioxidant (N-acetyl-l-cysteine). In vivo, ß-lapachone and its 3-iodine derivatives significantly reduced tumor burden and did not alter any of the biochemical, hematological, or histological parameters of the animals. Overall, ß-lapachone and its 3-iodine derivatives showed promising cytotoxic activity due to their ability to induce cell cycle arrest at G2/M phase and promote caspase- and ROS-mediated apoptosis. In addition, ß-lapachone and its 3-iodine derivatives were able to suppress tumor growth in vivo, indicating that these compounds may be new antitumor drug candidates.

OBJECTIVE: Dental granulomas (DGs) and radicular cysts (RCs) are chronic periapical lesions frequently involving the jaws. Langerhans cells (LCs) are dendritic cells responsible for the presentation of antigens to T lymphocytes. This study examined the expression of LCs in DG and RCs by immunohistochemical staining. STUDY DESIGN: Eighteen cases of DGs and 26 cases of RCs were analyzed using anti-CD1a marker. RESULTS: CD1a-labeled LCs were observed in 11.1% of DGs and in 69.2% of RCs, showing a significant correlation (P < 0.0001; Fisher's test). In DGs, LCs were only observed in granulation tissue, showing discrete immunostaining density. In RCs, LCs exhibited both a round and a dendritic shape in all epithelial layers. Although a correlation was observed between immunostaining density and epithelial thickness, as well as between immunostaining and inflammatory intensity, the differences were not significant in radicular cysts. CONCLUSION: Langerhans cells provide important insight into the immunopathogenesis of chronic periapical lesions.

Periapical actinomycosis caused by a gram-positive anaerobic pathogen characterizes a typical extra-radicular infection. This study determined the frequency and correlated the content of bacteria colonies with the of periapical actinomycosis size. The study comprised a total of 218 periapical lesions (PL) (cysts, granulomas or abscess). The specimens embedded in paraffin were sliced into 4-µm sections and stained with hematoxylin-eosin, Gram, Periodic Acid-Schiff (PAS) and Grocott's stain. The presence of bacterial colonies composed of filamentous structures labeled with the histochemical stains were described as Actinomyces, and for each case, the bacterial colonies were counted and measured. The correlation between the number and size of bacterial colonies and the size of PL was tested using Pearson's adjusted correlation coefficient. From 218 PL, bacterial colonies were identified in 64 biopsies. Seven cases (0.3%) fulfill the criteria for diagnosis of periapical actinomycosis. All of cases were therapy-resistant and did not showed periapical repair after 12 months of follow-up. Periapical surgery or dental extraction was performed. The correlation test indicated no correlation between the number of bacterial colonies and the lesion size (p=0.752, r=-0.148). However, a larger bacterial colony size generally resulted in a larger periapical lesion (P=0.000, r=0.657). The frequency of periapical actinomycosis was low, and this lesion should be included in the differential diagnosis of PL. The size of the Actinomyces colonies seemed to contribute to increase the size of the periapical lesion.

The aim of this study was to characterize the profile of the proteins involved in the Hedgehog signaling pathway to aid in the understanding of the pathogenesis of oral epithelial dysplasia (OED). The proteins SHH, PTCH1, HHIP, SUFU, GLI1, and cyclin D1 were evaluated by immunohistochemistry in 25 cases of OED, 4 of non-neoplasic oral mucosa, 8 of inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia and 5 of hyperkeratosis. SHH proteins were predominant in OED cases. Although PTCH1 protein was observed in all cases, this molecule was more highly expressed in OED. The inhibitor protein SUFU was present in OED and HHIP protein was overexpressed in OED. GLI1 proteins were predominantly found in the nuclei of epithelial cells in OED. Basal and suprabasal cells in the epithelial lining were positive for cyclin D1 only in OED. In conclusion, comparative analysis of the proteins involved in the Hedgehog pathway suggests that enhanced expression of these proteins can play an important role in the biological behavior of OED.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the protective action of alpha-tocopherol in ischemia/reperfusion injuries of pelvic member of rats. METHODS: Thirty adult male rats of the Wistar strain were randomized into three experimental groups of 10: Group I--control group with no ischemia or reperfusion. Groups II and III--four hours of ischemia and of hours of reperfusion by means of clamping of the infrarenal aorta. The animals of Group II were treated with saline and those of Group III were treated with i.v. alpha-tocopherol (50 mg/kg). Parameters studied were biopsies of the soleus muscle, dosing of creatine phosphokinase, lactate dehydrogenase, potassium, calcium and arterial blood gasometry. RESULTS: The results of biopsies of the soleus muscles studied by optical microscopy, were not significant in terms of presence of edema among the three groups studied. Variables inflammation and necrosis were not observed, therefore cannot be statistically analyzed. As to dosing of calcium and lactate dehydrogenase, the pH, pO2 and pCO2 values were not significant for all groups studied. We observed that the levels of potassium (Group II > Group I, Fcalculated = 5.84; Fcritical = 3.33), creatine phosphokinase (Group II > Groups I and III, Hcalculated = 13.92; Hcritical = 5.99) and bicarbonate (Groups I and III > Group II, Hcalculated = 11.98; Hcritical = 5.99) presented significant results among groups. CONCLUSION: From the serum biochemical perspective, the treatment with alpha-tocopherol has attenuated the metabolic injuries in the ischemia/reperfusion syndrome in this experimental model.

A cohort of children attending a day care center in Salvador (Bahia, Brazil) was studied prospectively to determine the incidence of viral respiratory infectious episodes and to identify the viruses associated with them. Two hundred seventy-one nasopharyngeal samples were collected over a 1-year period for examination, using indirect immunofluorescence with monoclonal antibodies against adenovirus, influenza A and B, parainfluenzae 1-3, and respiratory syncytial virus, and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction for picornavirus. Examination yielded positive results in 116 samples (42.8%). Rhinovirus was identified alone in 56 samples (48.3%) and was observed along with other viruses in 11 additional samples. Incidence density of viral respiratory infectious episodes was 7.66 episodes/1,000 child-days.
