 In neonatal, symptomatic tetralogy of Fallot (sTOF), data are lacking on whether high-risk groups would benefit from staged (SR) or complete repair (CR). We studied the association of gestational age (GA) at birth and z-score for birth weight (BWz), with management strategy and outcomes in sTOF. California population-based cohort study (2011-2017) of infants with sTOF (defined as catheter or surgical intervention prior to 44 weeks corrected GA) was performed, comparing management strategy and timing by GA and BWz categories. Multivariable models evaluated composite outcomes and days alive and out of hospital (DAOOH) in the first year of life. Among 345 patients (SR = 194; CR = 151), management strategy did not differ by GA or BWz with complete repair defined as prior to 44 weeks corrected gestational age; however, did differ by GA with regard to complete/timely repair (defined as complete repair within first 30 days of life). Full-term and early-term neonates underwent CR 20 (95%CI: - 27.1, - 14.1; p < 0.001) and 15 days (95%CI: - 22.1, - 8.2; p < 0.001) sooner than preterm neonates. Prematurity and major anomaly were associated with mortality or non-cardiac morbidity, while only major anomaly was associated with mortality or cardiac morbidity (OR = 3.5, 95%CI: 1.8,6.7, p < .0001). Full-term infants had greater DAOOH compared to preterm infants (35.2 days, 95%CI: 4.0, 66.5, p = 0.03). LGA infants and those with major anomaly had significantly lower DAOOH. In sTOF, patient specific risk factors such as prematurity and major anomaly were more associated with outcomes than management strategy.

OBJECTIVES: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is increasingly recognized as a source of poor patient outcomes after cardiac surgery. The purpose of the present report is to provide perioperative teams with expert recommendations specific to cardiac surgery-associated AKI (CSA-AKI). METHODS: This report and consensus recommendations were developed during a joint, in-person, multidisciplinary conference with the Perioperative Quality Initiative and the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Cardiac Society. Multinational practitioners with diverse expertise in all aspects of cardiac surgical perioperative care, including clinical backgrounds in anesthesiology, surgery and nursing, met from October 20 to 22, 2021, in Sacramento, California, and used a modified Delphi process and a comprehensive review of evidence to formulate recommendations. The quality of evidence and strength of each recommendation were established using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation methodology. A majority vote endorsed recommendations. RESULTS: Based on available evidence and group consensus, a total of 13 recommendations were formulated (4 for the preoperative phase, 4 for the intraoperative phase, and 5 for the postoperative phase), and are reported here. CONCLUSIONS: Because there are no reliable or effective treatment options for CSA-AKI, evidence-based practices that highlight prevention and early detection are paramount. Cardiac surgery-associated AKI incidence may be mitigated and postsurgical outcomes improved by focusing additional attention on presurgical kidney health status; implementing a specific cardiopulmonary bypass bundle; using strategies to maintain intravascular euvolemia; leveraging advanced tools such as the electronic medical record, point-of-care ultrasound, and biomarker testing; and using patient-specific, goal-directed therapy to prioritize oxygen delivery and end-organ perfusion over static physiologic metrics.

With the emergence of delay- and energy-critical vehicular applications, forwarding sense-actuate data from vehicles to the cloud became practically infeasible. Therefore, a new computational model called Vehicular Fog Computing (VFC) was proposed. It offloads the computation workload from passenger devices (PDs) to transportation infrastructures such as roadside units (RSUs) and base stations (BSs), called static fog nodes. It can also exploit the underutilized computation resources of nearby vehicles that can act as vehicular fog nodes (VFNs) and provide delay- and energy-aware computing services. However, the capacity planning and dimensioning of VFC, which come under a class of facility location problems (FLPs), is a challenging issue. The complexity arises from the spatio-temporal dynamics of vehicular traffic, varying resource demand from PD applications, and the mobility of VFNs. This paper proposes a multi-objective optimization model to investigate the facility location in VFC networks. The solutions to this model generate optimal VFC topologies pertaining to an optimized trade-off (Pareto front) between the service delay and energy consumption. Thus, to solve this model, we propose a hybrid Evolutionary Multi-Objective (EMO) algorithm called Swarm Optimized Non-dominated sorting Genetic algorithm (SONG). It combines the convergence and search efficiency of two popular EMO algorithms: the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) and Speed-constrained Particle Swarm Optimization (SMPSO). First, we solve an example problem using the SONG algorithm to illustrate the delay-energy solution frontiers and plotted the corresponding layout topology. Subsequently, we evaluate the evolutionary performance of the SONG algorithm on real-world vehicular traces against three quality indicators: Hyper-Volume (HV), Inverted Generational Distance (IGD) and CPU delay gap. The empirical results show that SONG exhibits improved solution quality over the NSGA-II and SMPSO algorithms and hence can be utilized as a potential tool by the service providers for the planning and design of VFC networks.

Background: In the recent years, there has been a rapid increase in the use of robot assisted neck dissection (RAND) as an alternative method for conventional neck dissection. Several recent reports have emphasized upon the feasibility and effectiveness of this technique. However, substantial technical and technological innovation is still essential in spite of the availability of multiple approaches for RAND. Materials and Methods: The present study describes a novel technique, i.e., Robotic Infraclavicular Approach for Minimally Invasive Neck Dissection (RIA MIND) used in head and neck cancers with the help of Intuitive da Vinci Xi Surgical System. Results: After RIA MIND procedure, the patient was discharged on the third post operative day. Also, the total wound size was less than 3.5 cm which enhanced the patient recovery time and required minimal post operative care. The patient was further reviewed 10 days after the procedure for the removal of sutures. Conclusion: RIA MIND technique was effective and safe for performing neck dissection for oral, head and neck cancers. However, additional detailed studies will be required for establishing this technique.

Polyphenols and representative small phenolic acids and molecules derived from larger constituents are dietary antioxidants from fruits, vegetables and largely other plant-based sources that have ability to scavenge free radicals. What is often neglected in polyphenol metabolism is bioavailability and the role of the gut microbiota (GMB), which has an essential role in health and disease and participates in co-metabolism with the host. The composition of the gut microbiota is in constant flux and is modified by multiple intrinsic and extrinsic factors, including antibiotics. Dietary or other factors are key modulators of the host gut milieu. In this review, we explore the role of polyphenols and select phenolic compounds as metabolic or intrinsic biochemistry regulators and explore this relationship in the context of the microbiota-gut-target organ axis in health and disease.

The circadian timing system is synchronized by the environmental photic and non-photic signals. Light is the major cue that entrains the master circadian oscillator located in suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). With aging condition ocular light impairs because of the age-related deficiencies in the eye as a result the clock becomes less sensitive to light. In such case non-photic cues may play a major role in synchronizing the clock. Earlier studies have linked altered meal timings to induce many physiological changes including serotonin in different brain regions such as hypothalamus, brain stem and striatum. Much is not known about the effect of timed food restriction as a non-photic stimulus on serotonergic system in SCN under aging condition. We report here the synchronizing effects of time-restricted feeding (TRF) as a non-photic stimulus on serotonin and its related metabolites in the SCN and pineal gland of male Wistar rats upon aging. Under food restriction daily rhythmicity of serotonin 5-HT and 5-HTOH was abolished whereas NAS, 5-MIAA and NAT showed a significant decrease in their daily pulses upon food restriction in 3 months (m) old rats. Under forced day time feeding schedule the mean 24 h levels of serotonin have significantly decreased in 12 and 24 m old animals in SCN and pineal gland. Most of the serotonin metabolites in the SCN and pineal gland of 12 and 24 m old ad libitum fed group rats have shown rhythmicity. 5-HT, NAS, MEL and NAT have shown daily rhythm in the SCN of 12 and 24 m old rats whereas 5-MIAA and 5-MTOH did not show daily rhythm in both the age groups. The mean 24 h levels of 5-HTP, 5-HIAA, 5-MIAA, 5-MTOH, MEL and NAT were increased in the pineal gland of 12 and 24 months old rats. This work help demonstrate the role of TRF in synchronising age induced desynchronization in serotonin metabolome.

Small heat shock proteins (sHsps) are a family of proteins. Some are induced in response to multiple stimuli and others are constitutively expressed. They are involved in fundamental cellular processes, including protein folding, apoptosis, and maintenance of cytoskeletal integrity. Hyperglycemia created during diabetes leads to neuronal derangements in the brain. In this study, we investigated the impact of chronic hyperglycemia on the expression of sHsps and heat shock transcription factors (HSFs), solubility and aggregation of sHsps and amyloidogenic proteins, and their role in neuronal apoptosis in a diabetic rat model. Diabetes was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats with streptozotocin and hyperglycemia was maintained for 16 weeks. Expressions of sHsps and HSFs were analyzed by qRT-PCR and immunoblotting in the cerebral cortex. Solubility of sHsps and amyloidogenic proteins, including α-synuclein and Tau, was analyzed by the detergent soluble assay. Neuronal cell death was analyzed by TUNEL staining and apoptotic markers. The interaction of sHsps with amyloidogenic proteins and Bax was assessed using co-immunoprecipitation. Hyperglycemia decreased Hsp27 and HSF1, and increased αBC, Hsp22, and HSF4 levels at transcript and protein levels. Diabetes induced the aggregation of αBC, Hsp22, α-synuclein, and pTau, as their levels were higher in the insoluble fraction. Additionally, diabetes impaired the interaction of αBC with α-synuclein and pTau. Furthermore, diabetes reduced the interaction of αBC with Bax, which may possibly contribute to neuronal apoptosis. Together, these results indicate that chronic hyperglycemia induces differential responses of sHsps by altering their expression, solubility, interaction, and roles in apoptosis.

The dwarf planet (1) Ceres, the largest object in the main asteroid belt with a mean diameter of about 950 kilometres, is located at a mean distance from the Sun of about 2.8 astronomical units (one astronomical unit is the Earth-Sun distance). Thermal evolution models suggest that it is a differentiated body with potential geological activity. Unlike on the icy satellites of Jupiter and Saturn, where tidal forces are responsible for spewing briny water into space, no tidal forces are acting on Ceres. In the absence of such forces, most objects in the main asteroid belt are expected to be geologically inert. The recent discovery of water vapour absorption near Ceres and previous detection of bound water and OH near and on Ceres (refs 5-7) have raised interest in the possible presence of surface ice. Here we report the presence of localized bright areas on Ceres from an orbiting imager. These unusual areas are consistent with hydrated magnesium sulfates mixed with dark background material, although other compositions are possible. Of particular interest is a bright pit on the floor of crater Occator that exhibits probable sublimation of water ice, producing haze clouds inside the crater that appear and disappear with a diurnal rhythm. Slow-moving condensed-ice or dust particles may explain this haze. We conclude that Ceres must have accreted material from beyond the 'snow line', which is the distance from the Sun at which water molecules condense.

BACKGROUND: Despite the emergence of Enhanced Recovery Protocols (ERPs) in cardiac surgery, there is no consensus on the essential elements for data reporting for quality improvement efforts, as well as accountability and standardization of outcome reporting across institutions. The aim of this study was to establish a consensus on essential data elements for cardiac ERAS®. METHODS: A 2-round modified Delphi technique was utilized based on existing recommendations from the recently published ERAS® cardiac surgery consensus guidelines. Round 1 included a steering committee of 10 experts who oversaw formulation of a focused list of data elements into 3 main areas: Preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative. Round 2 consisted of a multidisciplinary, multinational, heterogenous group of 50 voting experts from across the United States and Europe. All participants evaluated their level of agreement with each data element using a 5-point Likert scale with consensus threshold of 70%. RESULTS: In round 1, 17 data elements were considered essential (consensus > = 70%, either positive or negative) and 6 were considered marginal (consensus < = 70%, either positive or negative). In round 2, positive consensus was achieved for 15/17 (88.2%) data elements in the essential category, and all six data elements (100%) in the marginal category, indicating a high level of overall agreement. CONCLUSION: This initial study, which identified 21 key data elements for collection in an ERAS® cardiac program, will aid clinicians in establishing a framework for evaluating the quality of their contemporary ERP processes and will allow acquisition of data to help benchmark performance metrics between hospitals.

OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated outcomes in patients with vasoplegia after cardiac surgery treated with angiotensin II plus standard-of-care vasopressors. Vasoplegia is a common complication in cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Approximately 250,000 cardiac surgeries with cardiopulmonary bypass are performed in the United States annually, with vasoplegia occurring in 20%to-27% of patients. DESIGN: Post-hoc analysis of the Angiotensin II for the Treatment of High-Output Shock (ATHOS-3) study. SETTING: Multicenter, multinational study. PARTICIPANTS: Sixteen patients with vasoplegia after cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass were enrolled. INTERVENTIONS: Angiotensin II plus standard-of-care vasopressors (n = 9) compared with placebo plus standard-of-care vasopressors (n = 7). MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The primary endpoint was mean arterial pressure response (mean arterial pressure ≥75 mmHg or an increase from baseline of ≥10 mmHg at hour 3 without an increase in the dose of standard-of-care vasopressors). Vasopressor sparing and safety also were assessed. Mean arterial pressure response was achieved in 8 (88.9%) patients in the angiotensin II group compared with 0 (0%) patients in the placebo group (p = 0.0021). At hour 12, the median standard-of-care vasopressor dose had decreased from baseline by 76.5% in the angiotensin II group compared with an increase of 7.8% in the placebo group (p = 0.0013). No venous or arterial thrombotic events were reported. CONCLUSION: Patients with vasoplegia after cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass rapidly responded to angiotensin II, permitting significant vasopressor sparing.

PURPOSE: Obesity is a global health problem associated with several diseases including ocular complications. Earlier we reported progressive retinal degeneration because of obesity in a spontaneous obese rat (WNIN/Ob) model. In the current study, we examined the molecular mechanisms leading to retinal degeneration in WNIN/Ob rat. METHODS: Sorbitol was estimated by the fluorometric method in the retina of WNIN/Ob rats at different age (3-, 6- and 12- months), along with their respective lean rats. Immunoblotting was performed in the retina to assess the status of the insulin signaling pathway, ER stress and cellular stress (p38MAPK and ERK1/2). Human SK-N-SH cells were treated with 0.5 and 1.0 M sorbitol for 30 min to study insulin signaling, ER stress, and cellular stress. TUNEL assay was done to measure apoptosis. The retinal function in the rats was determined by electroretinogram. RESULTS: A gradual but significantly higher intracellular sorbitol accumulation was observed in the retina of obese rats from 3- to 12-months. The cellular osmotic stress has activated the insulin signaling mechanism without activating AKT and also triggered ER stress. Both the stresses activated the ERK and p38MAPK signaling causing apoptosis in the retina leading to retinal degeneration. Retinal dysfunction was confirmed by altered scotopic and photopic electroretinogram responses. These in vivo results were mimicked in SK-N-SH cells when exposed to sorbitol in vitro. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest cellular stress due to sorbitol accumulation impairing the ER function, thereby leading to progressive retinal degeneration under obese conditions.

Cubic spinel CoCr2O4 has recently attained attention due to its multiferroic properties. However, the Co site substitution effect on the structural and magnetic properties has rarely been studied in thin film form. In this work, the structural and magnetic properties of Co1-x Ni x Cr2O4 (x= 0, 0.5) epitaxial thin films deposited on MgAl2O4 (100) and MgO (100) substrates to manipulate the nature of strain in the films using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique are presented. The epitaxial nature of the films was manifested through x-ray diffraction (XRD), reciprocal space mapping (RSM) and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) measurements. Raman measurements revealed a disappearance of characteristic A 1 g and F 2 g modes of the CoCr2O4 with increase in the Ni content. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) studies show a modification of the surface morphology upon Ni substitution. Magnetic measurements disclose that the ferrimagnetic Curie temperature (T C) of the CoCr2O4 in thin film grown on MgAl2O4 (100) and MgO (100) substrates were found to be 100.6 ± 0.5 K and 93.8 ± 0.2 K, respectively. With Ni substitution the T C values were found to be enhanced to 104.5 ± 0.4 K for MgAl2O4 (100) and 108.5 ± 0.6 K for MgO (100) substrates. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggests Cr3+ oxidation states in the films, while Co ions are present in a mixed Co2+/Co3+ oxidation state. The substitution of Ni at Co site significantly modifies the line shape of the core level as well as the valence band. Ni ions are also found to be in a mixed 2+/3+ oxidation state. O 1s core level display asymmetry related to possible defects like oxygen vacancies in the films.

Jatropha curcas is a potential biodiesel crop and a highly adaptable species to various agro-climatic conditions. In this study, we have utilized transposable elements' (TE) repeat junctions (RJs) which are an important constituent of the genome, used to form a genome-wide molecular marker platform owing to its use in genomic studies of plants. We screened our previously generated Jatropha hybrid genome assembly of size 265 Mbp using RJPrimers pipeline software and identified a total of 1274 TE junctions. For the predicted RJs, we designed 2868 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based RJ markers (RJMs) flanking the junction regions. In addition to marker design, the identified RJs were utilized to detect 225,517 TEs across the genome. The different types of transposable repeat elements mainly were scattered into Retro, LTR, Copia and Gypsy categories. The efficacy of the designed markers was tested by utilizing a subset of RJMs selected randomly. We have validated 96 randomly selected RJ primers in a group of 32 J. curcas genotypes and more than 90% of the markers effectively intensified as amplicons. Of these, 10 primers were shown to be polymorphic in estimating genetic diversity among the 32 Jatropha lines. UPGMA cluster analysis revealed the formation of two clusters such as A and B exhibiting 85.5% and 87% similarity coefficient respectively. The various RJMs identified in this study could be utilized as a significant asset in Jatropha functional genomics including genome determination, mapping and marker-assisted selection.

A series of alkynylgold(I) phosphine complexes containing methoxy-substituted cinnamide moieties (3a-3c and 4a-4c) have been synthesized and characterized. All of the synthesized complexes were evaluated for their cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines A549 (lung), D24 (melanoma), and HT1080 (fibrosarcoma) and the human embryonic kidney 293 cell line (Hek293T) as a proxy model for noncancer cells. Most of the synthesized compounds showed antiproliferative activity against cancer cell lines at low micromolar concentrations. Among these, complex 3c showed a broad spectrum of anticancer activity with IC50 values in the range of 1.53-6.05 µM against all tested cancer lines. Complex 3c possessed 20 times higher cytotoxicity than the reference drug cisplatin against D24 melanoma cells and showed significant anticancer activity in 3D spheroidal models of melanoma cells. Mechanistic investigations of 3c activity indicate thioredoxin reductase inhibition through steric and hydrogen-bonding interactions, followed by the induction of oxidative stress and a mitochondrial pathway of cell death. Compound 3c also showed significant antiangiogenic properties in a transgenic zebrafish Tg(fli1a:EGFP) in vivo model.

BACKGROUND: The first FDA-approved test to assess risk for acute kidney injury (AKI), [TIMP-2]•[IGFBP7], is clinically available in many parts of the world, including the USA and Europe. We sought to understand how the test is currently being used clinically. METHODS: We invited a group of experts knowledgeable on the utility of this test for kidney injury to a panel discussion regarding the appropriate use of the test. Specifically, we wanted to identify which patients would be appropriate for testing, how the results are interpreted, and what actions would be taken based on the results of the test. We used a modified Delphi method to prioritize specific populations for testing and actions based on biomarker test results. No attempt was made to evaluate the evidence in support of various actions however. RESULTS: Our results indicate that clinical experts have developed similar practice patterns for use of the [TIMP-2]•[IGFBP7] test in Europe and North America. Patients undergoing major surgery (both cardiac and non-cardiac), those who were hemodynamically unstable, or those with sepsis appear to be priority patient populations for testing kidney stress. It was agreed that, in patients who tested positive, management of potentially nephrotoxic drugs and fluids would be a priority. Patients who tested negative may be candidates for "fast-track" protocols. CONCLUSION: In the experience of our expert panel, biomarker testing has been a priority after major surgery, hemodynamic instability, or sepsis. Our panel members reported that a positive test prompts management of nephrotoxic drugs as well as fluids, while patients with negative results are considered to be excellent candidates for "fast-track" protocols.

Herein, we present defect-induced photoluminescence behavior of Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) thin films with varying doping (Ga) concentrations and energetic ion irradiation. The Ga-doped ZnO thin films were prepared by a sol-gel spin-coating method. Micro-photoluminescence (µ-PL) was carried out to investigate the defect-related emission with the variation of doping concentration and ion irradiation. The PL spectra revealed that all films showed near-band-edge (NBE) emission along with a broad visible emission band, consisting of violet, blue, green, and yellow emission bands. The intensity of these emission bands was found to be strongly dependent on the Ga doping concentration and ion irradiation. Interestingly, a pronounced violet emission band around 2.99 eV (415 nm) was observed for the Ga-doped ZnO thin films with high Ga doping concentration, whereas an irradiated film with high ion fluence exhibited a strong green emission around 2.39 eV (519 nm); however, we concluded that the violet emission might have originated from zinc interstitial defects (Zni), and the concentration of Zni increased with the increasing doping concentration. The green emission is ascribed to the oxygen vacancies (VO), and the concentration of the VO defects increases with the increasing ion fluence. Thus, the µ-PL spectra of the irradiated films with emission dominating in the blue and green regions could be attributed to the formation of extended defects such as clusters and ionizing centers of Zni and VO. Herein, an in-depth understanding of the variation in defects related to the emission bands from these films is reported and correlated with the transport properties of these films for their possible optoelectronic applications.

The successful production of recombinant enzymes by tobacco transplastomic plants must maintain compatibility of the heterologous enzyme with chloroplast metabolism and its long-time enzyme stability. Based on previous reports, it has been taken for granted that following biolistic-transformation, homoplasticity could be obtained from the initially heteroplastic state following successive rounds of selection in the presence of the selection agent. However, several studies indicated that this procedure does not always ensure the complete elimination of unmodified wild-type plastomes. The present study demonstrates that CelK1 transplastomic plants, which were photosyntetically as active as untransformed ones, remain heteroplastomic even after repeated selection steps and that this state does not impair the relatively high-level production of the recombinant enzyme. In fact, even in the heteroplastomic state, the recombinant protein represented about 6% of the total soluble proteins (TSP). Moreover, our data also show that, while the recombinant endoglucanase undergoes phosphorylation, this post-translation modification does not have any significant impact on the enzymatic activity. Biomass storage might be required whenever the enzyme extraction process could not be performed immediately following the harvest of tobacco mature plants. In this respect, we have observed that enzyme activity in the detached leaves stored at 4 °C is maintained up to 20 weeks without significant loss of activity. These findings may have major implications in the future of chloroplast genetic engineering-based molecular farming to produce industrial enzymes in transplastomic plants.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this research was to map quantitative trait loci (QTLs) of multiple traits of breeding importance in pea (Pisum sativum L.). Three recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations, PR-02 (Orb x CDC Striker), PR-07 (Carerra x CDC Striker) and PR-15 (1-2347-144 x CDC Meadow) were phenotyped for agronomic and seed quality traits under field conditions over multiple environments in Saskatchewan, Canada. The mapping populations were genotyped using genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) method for simultaneous single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) discovery and construction of high-density linkage maps. RESULTS: After filtering for read depth, segregation distortion, and missing values, 2234, 3389 and 3541 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers identified by GBS in PR-02, PR-07 and PR-15, respectively, were used for construction of genetic linkage maps. Genetic linkage groups were assigned by anchoring to SNP markers previously positioned on these linkage maps. PR-02, PR-07 and PR-15 genetic maps represented 527, 675 and 609 non-redundant loci, and cover map distances of 951.9, 1008.8 and 914.2 cM, respectively. Based on phenotyping of the three mapping populations in multiple environments, 375 QTLs were identified for important traits including days to flowering, days to maturity, lodging resistance, Mycosphaerella blight resistance, seed weight, grain yield, acid and neutral detergent fiber concentration, seed starch concentration, seed shape, seed dimpling, and concentration of seed iron, selenium and zinc. Of all the QTLs identified, the most significant in terms of explained percentage of maximum phenotypic variance (PVmax) and occurrence in multiple environments were the QTLs for days to flowering (PVmax = 47.9%), plant height (PVmax = 65.1%), lodging resistance (PVmax = 35.3%), grain yield (PVmax = 54.2%), seed iron concentration (PVmax = 27.4%), and seed zinc concentration (PVmax = 43.2%). CONCLUSION: We have identified highly significant and reproducible QTLs for several agronomic and seed quality traits of breeding importance in pea. The QTLs identified will be the basis for fine mapping candidate genes, while some of the markers linked to the highly significant QTLs are useful for immediate breeding applications.

BACKGROUND: Recombinant and plasma-derived factor products, such as activated factor seven (rFVIIa) and four-factor prothrombin complex concentrate (4-factor PCC), have been used off-label for bleeding after cardiac surgery, but little evidence has been published regarding their efficacy and safety. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is a difference in chest tube output in patients who have received 4-factor PCC or rFVIIa for critical postoperative bleeding associated with cardiovascular surgery. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted utilizing the electronic medical record system at a 657-bed community, tertiary care hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Nonpregnant patients ≥18 years of age experiencing significant bleeding during cardiac surgery who received either PCC or rFVIIa perioperatively or postoperatively between April 2015 through December 2016 were eligible for inclusion. Patients were excluded if they received 4-factor PCC or rFVIIa for any indication other than bleeding during cardiac surgery or if they received both agents. RESULTS: Data conclude that there is no significant difference in chest tube output 24 hours postoperatively between patients treated with 4-factor PCC or rFVIIa. There was no difference in bleeding, thromboembolic events, or re-exploration between the rFVIIa and 4-factor PCC groups, but there was a difference in units of fresh frozen plasma administered and hospital length of stay. CONCLUSION: 4-Factor PCC may be an equally efficacious alternative to rFVIIa for patients experiencing significant bleeding during cardiac surgery. There is no difference in chest tube output; therefore, there is no difference in bleeding-either at 24 hours postoperatively or total.
