RESUMO

Conservation laws are deeply related to any symmetry present in a physical system1,2. Analogously to electrons in atoms exhibiting spin symmetries3, it is possible to consider neutrons and protons in the atomic nucleus as projections of a single fermion with an isobaric spin (isospin) of t = 1/2 (ref. 4). Every nuclear state is thus characterized by a total isobaric spin T and a projection Tz-two quantities that are largely conserved in nuclear reactions and decays5,6. A mirror symmetry emerges from this isobaric-spin formalism: nuclei with exchanged numbers of neutrons and protons, known as mirror nuclei, should have an identical set of states7, including their ground state, labelled by their total angular momentum J and parity π. Here we report evidence of mirror-symmetry violation in bound nuclear ground states within the mirror partners strontium-73 and bromine-73. We find that a J π = 5/2- spin assignment is needed to explain the proton-emission pattern observed from the T = 3/2 isobaric-analogue state in rubidium-73, which is identical to the ground state of strontium-73. Therefore the ground state of strontium-73 must differ from its J π = 1/2- mirror bromine-73. This observation offers insights into charge-symmetry-breaking forces acting in atomic nuclei.

RESUMO

The discovery of presolar grains in primitive meteorites has initiated a new era of research in the study of stellar nucleosynthesis. However, the accurate classification of presolar grains as being of specific stellar origins is particularly challenging. Recently, it has been suggested that sulfur isotopic abundances may hold the key to definitively identifying presolar grains with being of nova origins and, in this regard, the astrophysical ^{33}Cl(p,γ)^{34}Ar reaction is expected to play a decisive role. As such, we have performed a detailed γ-ray spectroscopy study of ^{34}Ar. Excitation energies have been measured with high precision and spin-parity assignments for resonant states, located above the proton threshold in ^{34}Ar, have been made for the first time. Uncertainties in the ^{33}Cl(p,γ) reaction have been dramatically reduced and the results indicate that a newly identified ℓ=0 resonance at E_{r}=396.9(13) keV dominates the entire rate for T=0.25-0.40 GK. Furthermore, nova hydrodynamic simulations based on the present work indicate an ejected ^{32}S/^{33}S abundance ratio distinctive from type-II supernovae and potentially compatible with recent measurements of a presolar grain.

RESUMO

A sequence of low-energy levels in _{32}^{78}Ge_{46} has been identified with spins and parity of 2^{+}, 3^{+}, 4^{+}, 5^{+}, and 6^{+}. Decays within this band proceed strictly through ΔJ=1 transitions, unlike similar sequences in neighboring Ge and Se nuclei. Above the 2^{+} level, members of this sequence do not decay into the ground-state band. Moreover, the energy staggering of this sequence has the phase that would be expected for a γ-rigid structure. The energies and branching ratios of many of the levels are described well by shell-model calculations. However, the calculated reduced transition probabilities for the ΔJ=2 in-band transitions imply that they should have been observed, in contradiction with the experiment. Within the calculations of Davydov, Filippov, and Rostovsky for rigid-triaxial rotors with γ=30°, there are sequences of higher-spin levels connected by strong ΔJ=1 transitions which decay in the same manner as those observed experimentally, yet are calculated at too high an excitation energy.

We report the first observation of the ^{108}Xe→^{104}Te→^{100}Sn α-decay chain. The α emitters, ^{108}Xe [E_{α}=4.4(2) MeV, T_{1/2}=58_{-23}^{+106} µs] and ^{104}Te [E_{α}=4.9(2) MeV, T_{1/2}<18 ns], decaying into doubly magic ^{100}Sn were produced using a fusion-evaporation reaction ^{54}Fe(^{58}Ni,4n)^{108}Xe, and identified with a recoil mass separator and an implantation-decay correlation technique. This is the first time α radioactivity has been observed to a heavy self-conjugate nucleus. A previous benchmark for study of this fundamental decay mode has been the decay of ^{212}Po into doubly magic ^{208}Pb. Enhanced proton-neutron interactions in the N=Z parent nuclei may result in superallowed α decays with reduced α-decay widths significantly greater than that for ^{212}Po. From the decay chain, we deduce that the α-reduced width for ^{108}Xe or ^{104}Te is more than a factor of 5 larger than that for ^{212}Po.

RESUMO

Two isomers decaying by electromagnetic transitions with half-lives of 4.7(1.1) and 247(73) µs have been discovered in the heavy ^{254}Rf nucleus. The observation of the shorter-lived isomer was made possible by a novel application of a digital data acquisition system. The isomers were interpreted as the K^{π}=8^{-}, ν^{2}(7/2^{+}[624],9/2^{-}[734]) two-quasineutron and the K^{π}=16^{+}, 8^{-}ν^{2}(7/2^{+}[624],9/2^{-}[734])⊗8^{-}π^{2}(7/2^{-}[514],9/2^{+}[624]) four-quasiparticle configurations, respectively. Surprisingly, the lifetime of the two-quasiparticle isomer is more than 4 orders of magnitude shorter than what has been observed for analogous isomers in the lighter N=150 isotones. The four-quasiparticle isomer is longer lived than the ^{254}Rf ground state that decays exclusively by spontaneous fission with a half-life of 23.2(1.1) µs. The absence of sizable fission branches from either of the isomers implies unprecedented fission hindrance relative to the ground state.

We report the observation of a very exotic decay mode at the proton drip line, the ß-delayed γ-proton decay, clearly seen in the ß decay of the T_{z}=-2 nucleus ^{56}Zn. Three γ-proton sequences have been observed after the ß decay. Here this decay mode, already observed in the sd shell, is seen for the first time in the fp shell. Both γ and proton decays have been taken into account in the estimation of the Fermi and Gamow-Teller strengths. Evidence for fragmentation of the Fermi strength due to strong isospin mixing is found.

We report on the first measurement of the fission barrier height in a heavy shell-stabilized nucleus. The fission barrier height of 254No is measured to be Bf=6.0±0.5 MeV at spin 15ℏ and, by extrapolation, Bf=6.6±0.9 MeV at spin 0ℏ. This information is deduced from the measured distribution of entry points in the excitation energy versus spin plane. The same measurement is performed for 220Th and only a lower limit of the fission barrier height can be determined: Bf(I)>8 MeV. Comparisons with theoretical fission barriers test theories that predict properties of superheavy elements.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery, an effective treatment for morbid obesity, commonly leads to near complete resolution of type 2 diabetes. The underlying mechanisms, however, remain unclear and factors other than weight loss alone may be involved. METHODS: To determine whether increased hypothalamic insulin sensitivity after RYGB drives the rapid improvement in glucose metabolism, high-fat-fed rats received either an insulin receptor (IR) antisense vector or a control lentiviral vector that was microinjected into the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH). Six weeks later, rats underwent RYGB or control gastrointestinal surgery. RESULTS: Four weeks after surgery, weight loss was comparable in RYGB and surgical controls. Nevertheless, only RYGB rats that received the control vector demonstrated both improved hepatic and peripheral insulin sensitivity. Insulin suppressed hepatic glucose production (HGP) by 50% (p < 0.05) with RYGB, whereas the effect of insulin on HGP was completely absent in VMH IR knockdown (IRkd) rats. By contrast, both RYGB groups displayed an identical twofold increase in insulin-stimulated peripheral glucose uptake. The animals that underwent control gastrointestinal surgery failed to show any improvement in either hepatic or peripheral insulin sensitivity; VMH IRkd did not influence the magnitude of insulin resistance. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: Our findings demonstrate that RYGB surgery in high-fat-fed obese rats enhances hepatic and peripheral insulin sensitivity independently of weight loss. The improved hepatic, but not the peripheral, response to insulin is mediated centrally at the level of the VMH. These data provide direct evidence that the metabolic benefits of RYGB surgery are not simply a consequence of weight loss but likely in part involve the central nervous system.

We present results from time-of-flight nuclear mass measurements at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory that are relevant for neutron star crust models. The masses of 16 neutron-rich nuclei in the scandium-nickel range were determined simultaneously, with the masses of (61)V, (63)Cr, (66)Mn, and (74)Ni measured for the first time with mass excesses of -30.510(890) MeV, -35.280(650) MeV, -36.900(790) MeV, and -49.210(990) MeV, respectively. With these results the locations of the dominant electron capture heat sources in the outer crust of accreting neutron stars that exhibit super bursts are now experimentally constrained. We find the experimental Q value for the (66)Fe→(66)Mn electron capture to be 2.1 MeV (2.6σ) smaller than predicted, resulting in the transition occurring significantly closer to the neutron star surface.

The structure of (15)C, with an s(1/2) neutron weakly bound to a closed-neutron shell nucleus (14)C, makes it a prime candidate for a one-neutron halo nucleus. We have for the first time studied the cross section for the fusion-fission reaction (15)C+(232)Th at energies in the vicinity of the Coulomb barrier and compared it to the yield of the neighboring (14)C+(232)Th system measured in the same experiment. At sub-barrier energies, an enhancement of the fusion yield by factors of 2-5 was observed for (15)C, while the cross sections for (14)C match the trends measured for (12,13)C.

We report on the first direct measurement of the proton separation energy for the proton-unbound nucleus (69)Br. Bypassing the (68)Se waiting point in the rp process is directly related to the 2p-capture rate through (69)Br, which depends exponentially on the proton separation energy. We find a proton separation energy for (69)Br of Sp((69)Br )= -785(-40)(+34) keV; this is less bound compared to previous predictions which have relied on uncertain theoretical calculations. The influence of the extracted proton separation energy on the rp process occurring in type I x-ray bursts is examined within the context of a one-zone burst model.

Spectroscopic factors have been extracted for proton-rich 34Ar and neutron-rich 46Ar using the (p, d) neutron transfer reaction. The experimental results show little reduction of the ground state neutron spectroscopic factor of the proton-rich nucleus 34Ar compared to that of 46Ar. The results suggest that correlations, which generally reduce such spectroscopic factors, do not depend strongly on the neutron-proton asymmetry of the nucleus in this isotopic region as was reported in knockout reactions. The present results are consistent with results from systematic studies of transfer reactions but inconsistent with the trends observed in knockout reaction measurements.

Somatic mutations of LKB1 tumour suppressor gene have been detected in human cancers including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The relationship between LKB1 mutations and clinicopathological characteristics and other common oncogene mutations in NSCLC is inadequately described. In this study we evaluated tumour specimens from 310 patients with NSCLC including those with adenocarcinoma, adenosquamous carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma histologies. Tumours were obtained from patients of US (n=143) and Korean (n=167) origin and screened for LKB1, KRAS, BRAF, and EGFR mutations using RT-PCR-based SURVEYOR-WAVE method followed by Sanger sequencing. We detected mutations in the LKB1 gene in 34 tumours (11%). LKB1 mutation frequency was higher in NSCLC tumours of US origin (17%) compared with 5% in NSCLCs of Korean origin (P=0.001). They tended to occur more commonly in adenocarcinomas (13%) than in squamous cell carcinomas (5%) (P=0.066). LKB1 mutations associated with smoking history (P=0.007) and KRAS mutations (P=0.042) were almost mutually exclusive with EGFR mutations (P=0.002). The outcome of stages I and II NSCLC patients treated with surgery alone did not significantly differ based on LKB1 mutation status. Our study provides clinical and molecular characteristics of NSCLC, which harbour LKB1 mutations.

We tested the hypothesis that rapid vasodilation proportional to contraction intensity contributes to the immediate (first cardiac cycle after initial contraction) exercise hyperemia. Ten healthy subjects performed single 1-s isometric forearm contractions at 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 50, and 70% maximal voluntary contraction intensity (MVC) in arm above heart (AH) and below heart (BH) positions. Forearm blood flow (FBF; brachial artery mean blood velocity, Doppler ultrasound), mean arterial pressure (arterial tonometry), and heart rate (electrocardiogram) were measured beat by beat. Venous emptying (measured with a forearm strain gauge) was already maximized at 5% MVC, indicating that increases in contraction intensity did not further empty the forearm veins. Immediate increases in FBF were linearly proportional to contraction intensity from 5 to 70% MVC in AH (slope = 4.4 +/- 0.5%DeltaFBF/%MVC). In BH, the immediate increase in FBF demonstrated a curvilinear relationship with increasing contraction intensity and was greater than AH at 15, 20, 30, and 50% MVC (P < 0.05). Peak changes in FBF were greater in BH vs. AH from 10 to 50% MVC, even when venous refilling was complete (P < 0.05). These data support the existence of a rapid-acting vasodilatory mechanism(s) at the onset of human forearm exercise.

Antibacterial levels of iodine, chlorhexidine or sodium fluoride were topically applied to the molar teeth of rats. The effect of these agents on buccal and sulcal caries, as well as on certain oral bacterial populations was assayed. All three agents exerted a significant cariostatic effect which was site specific. Buccal caries incidence and reductions appeared correlated to S. mutans counts, while sulcal caries was better correlated to total cultivable counts. These studies suggested that the simultaneous application of iodine and NaF might exert an additive cariostatic effect.

The mutagenicity of hydrazine, monomethylhydrazine (MMH), 1,1-dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) and 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (SDMH) in L5178Y mouse-lymphoma cells has been investigated. Hydrazine, UDMH and SDMH induced thymidine mutation, in the absence of extraneous metabolic activation. Dose-response curves were produced for these compounds. MMH did not induce thymidine mutation. All 4 compounds were negative in the ouabain, thioguanine and cytosine arabinoside selective systems. Induction of mutation by hydrazine and UDMH is correlated with toxicity. This is not the case for SDMH-induced mutation. Hydrazine, UDMH and SDMH produce different ratios of large and small thymidine-resistant clones. The compounds appear to have different modes of action in the cell.

The mutagenicity of 4 known intercalating agents acridine orange (AO), quinacrine mustard (QM), proflavin (PF) and ethidium bromide (EB) has been investigated in L5178Y mouse lymphoma cells. Methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) was used as a positive control in these studies. AO, QM and PF induced mutation in the excess thymidine- and thioguanine-selective systems. These 3 compounds were negative in the ouabain- and cytosine-arabinoside-selective systems while EB was positive only in the cytosine arabinoside system. It would appear that the EB-induced mutagenesis is different from that of AO, QM and PF though all are intercalating agents. Since the molecular origin of cytosine arabinoside mutants is unknown, further interpretation of the EB results is not possible.
