Practitioners are recognized as one of the key components that make parenting interventions meaningful and helpful to families, and the impact of practitioners' skills on the outcomes of parenting interventions has been consistently recognized in research. However, the mechanisms and ongoing processes through which the practitioners' actions and skills may impact parental engagement and other outcomes remain unknown. This qualitative study explored parents' perceptions about the processes through which specific practitioners' skills contribute to the outcomes of the Incredible Years Basic Parent Program (IYPP). Twenty-four Portuguese parents who had completed the IYPP were interviewed in four focus groups, and the data were analyzed through thematic analysis. Practitioners' skills were perceived by parents as having an impact on their engagement in the program, their process of change, and their interpersonal relationships. Practitioners were perceived to demonstrate their influence in the intervention process through six different roles: the roles of a confidant, a positive coach, a partner, a maestro, a tailor, and a congruent person. This study reinforces the prominent role of practitioners in enabling parental outcomes of an evidence-based parenting program and suggests that more attention should be paid to continuing supervision and other professional development processes.

BACKGROUND: Optimal pain management is one of the core elements of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS®) protocols and remains a challenge. Acupuncture (AC) is an effective treatment for various pain conditions. Systematic and personalized allocation of acupoints may be decisive for efficacy. METHODS: Based on the predominant pressure sensitivity of six gastrointestinal (GI) checkpoints (G1-G6), we devised a method to detect personalized patterns of pain and a corresponding set of acupoints. We performed a single AC treatment with semi-permanent needles and assessed the visual analogue scale (VAS) score, pain threshold based on pressure algometry (PA), and temperature changes on abdominal skin areas before and 5 min after AC. RESULTS: Between April and June 2021, thirty-eight patients were prospectively included in this pilot study. The mean reduction in subjective pain sensation as assessed by VAS was 86%, paralleled by an augmentation of the pain threshold as measured by PA by 64%. A small but significant increase in the skin temperature was observed above the abdominal surface. These effects were independent of the type of surgery. CONCLUSION: Checkpoint acupuncture may be a complementary tool for postoperative pain management. Further investigations are needed to explore this analgesic effect.

The European anchovy represents the main fisheries for countries in the Mediterranean and Black Sea basins. The skeletal muscle of 13 of 48 (27.1%) Engraulis encrasicolus (L.) specimens from North East Atlantic waters (FAO 27.8.c) was found infected with interfibrillar elongated plasmodia (130-980 µm in length) containing mature myxospores belonging to the genus Kudoa Meglitsch, 1947. No flesh softening was found associated with infection. Fresh myxospores were 10.8 ± 0.7 (9.1-12.3) µm in width 1, 11.3 ± 0.9 (9.5-13.4) µm in width 2, 6.7 ± 0.4 (5.8-7.4) µm in thickness, and 6.9 ± 0.5 (5.8-7.5) µm in length. They were almost stellate in apical view having three pointed-edged shell valves bearing three small polar capsules equal in size 5.0 ± 0.3 (4.4-5.4) µm long and 2.4 ± 0.2 (2.0-3.0) µm wide, and one rounded- to rarely bluntly pointed-edged shell valve bearing a large and particularly wide polar capsule 6.8 ± 0.4 (5.9-7.6) µm long and 4.1 ± 0.2 (3.6-4.4) µm wide. Morphological and morphometrical comparisons between these myxospores and those of Kudoa thyrsites (Gilchrist, 1923) from the clupeid Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum) (North East Atlantic waters, FAO 27.9.a), with which exhibited a similarity of 98.9% and 96.2% using SSU and LSU rDNA sequences, respectively, support the creation of Kudoa encrasicoli n. sp. Morphometrical analysis of the polar capsules of flattened myxospores is suggested as a useful approach to differentiate phylogenetically related kudoids with stellate or almost stellate myxospores bearing four polar capsules.

The present study describes Henneguya tietensis n. sp. parasitizing Prochilodus lineatus (Valenciennes, 1837) from Brazil, through morphological and molecular analysis. Myxospores were found in the gill tissue of P. lineatus with a prevalence of 10%. The myxospores consisted of two elongate, elliptical shell valves each with a long, tapering caudal appendage. The morphology was consistent with Henneguya and the myxospore measured as follows (mean ± SD): total length 55.5 ± 2.1 µm, body length 16.2 ± 1.1 µm, body width 5.5 ± 0.1 µm, caudal appendages length 39.0 ± 2.0 µm. The polar capsules were 7.3 ± 0.2 µm long, 1.7 ± 0.2 µm wide and contained a polar filament coiled 11 to 13 turns. Histological analysis showed the plasmodia developing in the middle region of each gill filament and caused a focally extensive distension by forming a space-occupying mass within the gill filament. The ultrastructural analysis allowed the observation of the presence of mature myxospores throughout the plasmodium. Phylogenetic analysis with the SSU rDNA gene showed Henneguya tietensis n. sp. as a sister species of the subclade formed by Henneguya piaractus and Henneguya brachypomus that infect fishes of the genus Piaractus. The genetically closest species was H. piaractus, which showed a similarity of 82.4%. Using molecular and morphological characterization, the myxozoan parasite described herein represents a new species of the genus Henneguya.

The present review systematically explored research examining the relationship between therapist-related factors and the outcomes of parent interventions directed at children's behavior problems. A systematic search of the literature was conducted with online scientific databases, parenting programs, web sites, and bibliographic references of the selected articles, according to PRISMA guidelines. A total of 24 quantitative studies met the inclusion criteria. Although some methodological limitations were identified with respect to the measurement of therapist factors, the reviewed research strongly suggests that the therapist plays a critical role in parent interventions directed at behavior problems. In particular, many parent outcomes are found to be related to the parent-therapist alliance, the therapist's fidelity to the intervention, specific therapist's in-session actions, and the therapist's personal variables. The parent-therapist alliance and therapist fidelity to the intervention consistently relate to changes in parenting practices, and alliance additionally relates to fewer perceived barriers to participation in treatment, more treatment acceptability, and greater parenting satisfaction and self-efficacy. In addition, specific in-session therapist interpersonal actions relate to parents' engagement and satisfaction, while both the therapist's interpersonal actions and more active skills relate to parent change. Therapist's personal variables have been scarcely or poorly studied to date, but the results found justify the need to develop further research in this area. In conclusion, more attention should be given to the role of the therapist when implementing parenting programs directed at behavior problems, and more and better research is needed that can overcome the methodological limitations identified.


La presente revisión exploró de forma sistemática las investigaciones que examinam la relación entre los factores relacionados con el terapeuta y los resultados de intervenciones para padres de niños con problemas de conducta. Se realizó una búsqueda sistemática de la bibliografía con bases de datos científicas en línea, sitios web de programas de entrenamiento para padres y referencias bibliográficas de los artículos seleccionados, de acuerdo con las pautas de PRISMA. Un total de 24 estudios cuantitativos reunieron los criterios de inclusión. Aunque se identificaron algunas limitaciones metodológicas con respecto a la medición de los factores del terapeuta, la investigación analizada sugiere marcadamente que el terapeuta desempeña un papel crítico en las intervenciones dirigidas a padres de niños con problemas de conducta. En particular, muchos resultados de los padres se encuentran relacionados con la alianza entre los padres y el terapeuta, la fidelidad del terapeuta a la intervención, las acciones específicas del terapeuta dentro de la sesión y las variables personales del terapeuta. La alianza entre los padres y el terapeuta y la fidelidad del terapeuta a la intervención se relacionan constantemente con los cambios en las prácticas parentales, y la alianza además se relaciona con menos obstáculos percibidos para la participación en el tratamiento, una mayor aceptabilidad de lo mismo y una mayor satisfacción y autoeficacia de los padres. Además, las acciones interpersonales específicas del terapeuta dentro de la sesión se relacionan con la participación y la satisfacción de los padres, mientras que tanto las acciones interpersonales del terapeuta como las habilidades más activas se relacionan con el cambio de las praticas parentales. Hasta la fecha, las variables personales del terapeuta se han estudiado poco o deficientemente, pero los resultados encontrados justifican la necesidad de desarrollar la investigación en esta área. Para concluir, se debe prestar más atención al papel del terapeuta a la hora de implementar programas de entrenamiento para padres de niños con problemas de conducta, y se necesitan más y mejores investigaciones que puedan superar las limitaciones metodológicas identificadas.

The present study describes Henneguya lacustris n. sp. parasitizing Astyanax lacustris (Lütken 1875), from the Tietê River, State of São Paulo, Brazil, through morphological and molecular analysis. Myxospores of the parasites were found in the gills of A. lacustris with 13% prevalence of infection. The myxospores were oval and presented as measures (mean ± standard deviation): total length 18.3 ± 2.2 µm, body length 10.4 ± 1.6 µm, body width 4.9 ± 0.9 µm, tail length 7.2 ± 2.5 µm. The polar capsule was 4.8 ± 0.3 µm long and 1.5 ± 0.2 µm wide. The polar tubules, present inside the polar capsules, had 6 to 7 turns. The ultrastructural analysis allowed the observation of the asynchronous development of the myxospores. Phylogenetic analysis showed H. lacustris n. sp. as a sister species of H. chydadea Barassa and Cordeiro 2003 in a subclade formed by species that parasitize the gills of Characiform fish from Brazil. Using molecular and morphological characterization, this parasite was identified as a new species of the genus Henneguya Thélohan 1892.

Three new types of sphaeractinomyxon (Cnidaria, Myxozoa) are described from the coelomic cavity of the marine oligochaete Tubificoides insularis, collected from the Alvor estuary, Algarve, Portugal. Another known type is also registered from this location and host: Sphaeractinomyxon type 10 of Rangel et al. (2016), which was originally described from the marine oligochaete Tubificoides pseudogaster in the Aveiro estuary, Portugal. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the case isolates and all other available SSU rRNA sequences of sphaeractinomyxon clustering within a clade containing Myxobolus spp. that infect mullets, thus suggesting that this collective group plays a role in the life cycle of mugiliform-infecting myxobolids. Also clustering within this clade were all types of tetraspora and endocapsa, calling into question the distinctiveness of these collective groups. Acknowledging a previous work showing that the pansporocysts of sphaeractinomyxon produce a variable number of actinospores, we suggest that the tetraspora collective group be deemed invalid and its types transferred to sphaeractinomyxon. In turn, endocapsa requires validation through the description of new types truly differentiating them from sphaeractinomyxon.

BACKGROUND: Transthyretin-related familial amyloid polyneuropathy (TTR-FAP Val30Met) shows a wide variation in age-at-onset (AO) between generations and genders, as in Portuguese families, where women display a later onset and a larger anticipation (>10 years). Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy number was assessed to clarify whether it has a modifier effect on AO variability in Portuguese patients. METHODS: The mtDNA copy number of 262 samples (175 Val30Met TTR carriers and 87 controls (proven Val30Val)) was quantified by quantitative real-time PCR. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS V.23 software. RESULTS: This study shows that Val30Met TTR carriers have a significantly higher (p<0.001) mean mtDNA copy number than controls. Furthermore, the highest mtDNA copy number mean was observed in early-onset patients (AO <40 years). Importantly, early-onset offspring showed a significant increase (p=0.002) in the mtDNA copy number, when compared with their late AO parents. CONCLUSIONS: The present findings suggest, for the first time, that mtDNA copy number may be associated with earlier events and may therefore be further explored as a potential biomarker for follow-up of TTR-FAP Val30Met carriers.

The myxosporean parasite Ceratomyxa diplodae Lubat et al. 1989 sensu Sitjà-Bobadilla & Álvarez-Pellitero, 1993, originally described from the annular seabream Diplodus annularis in the Adriatic Sea, has subsequently been reported from several other sparid hosts, and also a moronid fish, the European seabass Dicentrarchus labrax from the Mediterranean Sea. Here, molecular identity and additional morphological data are given for this parasite infecting the gall bladder of D. labrax in a southern Portuguese fish farm. In the bile, disporic plasmodia were spherical to subspherical with a smooth surface membrane. Most myxospores were crescent-shaped, 5.1 ± 0.5 (4.8-6.7) µm long (mean ± SD) and 21.9 ± 1.0 (20.4-23.9) µm thick; a few were more arcuate, 5.7 ± 0.4 (5.3-6.3) µm long and 17.3 ± 1.0 (16.3-19.1) µm thick. The wall consisted of 2 symmetrical valves united along a slightly curved suture line, with moderately tapering to rounded ends. Two spherical polar capsules, measuring 2.9 ± 0.3 (2.5-3.4) µm in diameter, contained a polar filament forming 8 to 9 coils organized in 2 rows. Host species, tissue tropism, and myxospore morphology supported species identification. Phylogenetic analyses of the small subunit ribosomal RNA sequence positioned the parasite among most sparid-infecting Ceratomyxa spp., suggesting the existence of a common ancestor for these species. The acquisition of molecular data from infections of C. diplodae in its original host and in other sparids is essential in order to ascertain if the morphological and biological variations found among reports of this parasite are intra- or inter-specific.

BACKGROUND: Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) is the second most common early-onset dementia. Over the last few decades, a growing number of evidence suggests mitochondrial involvement in neurodegeneration, namely modifications of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) contributing to energy impairment. OBJECTIVE: To sequence the 7 mitochondrially encoded complex I (MT-ND) genes in 70 FTLD patients and investigate mitochondrial respiratory chain (MRC) complex I activity. METHODS: A sample of 70 patients was studied (39 females and 31 males; age range: 38-82 years, mean ± SD: 63 ± 11 years) with a probable diagnosis of FTLD. Total DNA was extracted from peripheral blood, and sequencing analysis of 7 MT-NDn (1, 2, 3, 4L, 4, 5, 6) genes was performed. Variants identified were submitted to in silico study. Spectrophotometric evaluation of MRC activity in lymphocytes was performed, and results were compared with age-matched controls. RESULTS: A total of 358 (161 different) alterations were found in 92.9% of patients. According to in silico analysis of nonsynonymous variants, only 5 variations are possibly or probably damaging. Complex I activity is significantly decreased in patients. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first report of the complete sequence of the MT-ND genes in FTLD patients and correlation with MRC activity. The high number of mtDNA variations identified and a significant decrease in complex I activity suggest a possible involvement of mtDNA alterations in FTLD. Although the majority of these alterations are not primarily pathogenic, an interaction with other mutations may occur, leading to the disease, worsening its expression or influencing age of onset.

To evaluate the 12-month efficacy of a parent-based intervention programme on children's and mothers' outcomes in a sample of Portuguese preschoolers displaying early hyperactive and inattentive behaviours (AD/HD behaviours), 52 preschool children whose mothers had received the Incredible Years basic parent training (IY) were followed from baseline to 12 months of follow-up. Reported and observational measures were used. Effects were found in the children's reported AD/HD behaviours at home and at school after 12 months. Large effect sizes were also found in mothers' variables: a decrease in self-reported dysfunctional parenting practices and an improved sense of competence and observed positive parenting. However, the improvements in coaching skills that have been observed after 6 months of follow-up decreased over time. No other significant differences were found between 6 and 12 months follow-up, with small effect sizes indicating that the significant post-intervention changes in child and parenting measures were maintained. After 12 months of follow-up, there was a clinically important reduction of over 30 % in reported AD/HD behaviours in 59 % of children. The sustained effects observed both for children and their mothers suggest long-term benefits of IY. Therefore, efforts should be made by Portuguese policy makers and professionals to deliver IY as an early preventive intervention for children displaying early AD/HD behaviours.

OBJECTIVE: We tested if baseline disruptive child behavior problem severity predicts parental attendance at sessions of a parenting group program. METHOD: We used a database of randomized trials of the Incredible Years parenting program in Europe and restricted the sample to participants randomized to the intervention arm. Using baseline Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory scores, we distinguished between trial-level problem severity and child-level problem severity, compared linear and quadratic functional forms at both levels, and considered cross-level interactions, all in a multilevel Poisson regression framework. RESULTS: Drawing on 918 participants in 12 trials, we found that within trials, parents of children with the least and most severe problems attended fewer sessions. Between trials, each additional 10-point increase in the Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory trial mean predicted an 11% increase in attendance. Models including child sex, age, or family low-income did not change coefficients or their interpretation. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that although generally attendance is higher in parents of children with more challenging behavior, it seems difficult for group programs to keep families with the least or most severe problems engaged. Our findings call for the need to better understand the conditions under which lower attendance translates into equivalent or lesser program benefits. Surveillance data published since 2010, although limited, showed that there is no evidence of zoonotic parasite infection in market quality Atlantic salmon, marine rainbow trout, gilthead seabream, turbot, meagre, Atlantic halibut, common carp and European catfish. No studies were found for greater amberjack, brown trout, African catfish, European eel and pikeperch. Anisakis pegreffii, A. simplex (s. s.) and Cryptocotyle lingua were found in European seabass, Atlantic bluefin tuna and/or cod, and Pseudamphistomum truncatum and Paracoenogonimus ovatus in tench, produced in open offshore cages or flow-through ponds or tanks. It is almost certain that fish produced in closed recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) or flow-through facilities with filtered water intake and exclusively fed heat-treated feed are free of zoonotic parasites. Since the last EFSA opinion, the UV-press and artificial digestion methods have been developed into ISO standards to detect parasites in fish, while new UV-scanning, optical, molecular and OMICs technologies and methodologies have been developed for the detection, visualisation, isolation and/or identification of zoonotic parasites in fish. Freezing and heating continue to be the most efficient methods to kill parasites in fishery products. High-pressure processing may be suitable for some specific products. Pulsed electric field is a promising technology although further development is needed. Ultrasound treatments were not effective. Traditional dry salting of anchovies successfully inactivated Anisakis. Studies on other traditional processes - air-drying and double salting (brine salting plus dry salting) - suggest that anisakids are successfully inactivated, but more data covering these and other parasites in more fish species and products is required to determine if these processes are always effective. Marinade combinations with anchovies have not effectively inactivated anisakids. Natural products, essential oils and plant extracts, may kill parasites but safety and organoleptic data are lacking. Advanced processing techniques for intelligent gutting and trimming are being developed to remove parasites from fish.

Behavioral parenting programs, such as Incredible Years (IY), reduce conduct problems in children. However, conduct problems encompass many different behaviors, and little is known about the effects of parenting programs on specific aspects of children's conduct problems, such as children's relationships with others. The aim of this study was to examine, for the first time, the effects of the IY parenting program on children's levels of conflict with their parents, siblings, and peers. We used individual participant-level data pooled across 12 randomized trials in Europe, comprising a total of 1,409 families: child aged 1-11 years (M = 5.53 years, SD = 1.56) and 61% male, 60% low-income families, and 30% from an ethnic minority. Multilevel models were used to explore the effects of IY on children's conflict with parents, siblings, and peers. The IY program reduced children's conflict with their parents (ß = -.21), but there were no main effects of the program on conflict with siblings or peers. Moderation analyses showed that IY reduced conflict in sibling relationships for the 22% of families with the most severe sibling conflict at baseline. This suggests that high-quality behavioral parenting programs, such as IY, can effectively reduce children's conflict within the home (i.e., with parents and siblings), especially when initial levels of sibling conflict are high, but do not have broader benefits on children's interpersonal conflict outside of the home (i.e., with peers). BACKGROUND: Considering the recently growing number of potentially traumatic events in Europe, the European Psychiatric Association undertook a study to investigate clinicians' treatment choices for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS: The case-based analysis included 611 participants, who correctly classified the vignette as a case of PTSD, from Central/ Eastern Europe (CEE) (n = 279), Southern Europe (SE) (n = 92), Northern Europe (NE) (n = 92), and Western Europe (WE) (N = 148). RESULTS: About 82% woulduse antidepressants (sertraline being the most preferred one). Benzodiazepines and antipsychotics were significantly more frequently recommended by participants from CEE (33 and 4%, respectively), compared to participants from NE (11 and 0%) and SE (9% and 3%). About 52% of clinicians recommended trauma-focused cognitive behavior therapy and 35% psychoeducation, irrespective of their origin. In the latent class analysis, we identified four distinct "profiles" of clinicians. In Class 1 (N = 367), psychiatrists would less often recommend any antidepressants. In Class 2 (N = 51), clinicians would recommend trazodone and prolonged exposure therapy. In Class 3 (N = 65), they propose mirtazapine and eye movement desensitization reprocessing therapy. In Class 4 (N = 128), clinicians propose different types of medications and cognitive processing therapy. About 50.1% of participants in each region stated they do not adhere to recognized treatment guidelines. CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians' decisions for PTSD are broadly similar among European psychiatrists, but regional differences suggest the need for more dialogue and education to harmonize practice across Europe and promote the use of guidelines.

Mitochondrial respiratory chain diseases are a heterogeneous group of pathologies caused by genetic alterations affecting mitochondrial energy production. Theoretically, this deficiency may lead to any symptoms, in any organ or tissue, at any age even before birth. The aim of our study was to identify the frequency and characterize antenatal manifestations identifying possible associations between mitochondrial disease and more specific and earlier manifestation. We retrospectively review the files of 44 paediatric subjects with genetic and biochemical alterations of respiratory chain identified in the first decade of life and compare data with a control group (n = 88). Our results show that maternal age was similar in both groups. The female gender was predominant in patients group. Gestational age at delivery was similar in both groups. Concerning birth weight, it was significantly lower (p = 0.001) in patients (2899.9 ± 538.3 vs. 3246.6 ± 460.2 g). Fifteen pregnancies of the patients group were considered abnormal. Our findings show that intrauterine growth restriction was the most frequent antenatal feature observed. Neonatal morbidity was significantly higher (fivefold) in patients (p < 0.001). The clinical findings are independent of the molecular defect type. Our results are preliminary and more studies are needed, in order to learn more about mitochondrial physiology and activity in embryological development for the assessment of mitochondrial disease progress in fetal life. However, the present work is a significant contribution, given the scarcity of information in this field.

A new myxosporean, Zschokkella auratis sp. nov., infecting the gall bladder of the gilthead seabream Sparus aurata in a southern Portuguese fish farm, is described using microscopic and molecular procedures. Plasmodia and mature spores were observed floating free in the bile. Plasmodia, containing immature and mature spores, were characterized by the formation of branched glycostyles, apparently due to the release of segregated material contained within numerous cytoplasmic vesicles. Mature spores were ellipsoidal in sutural view and slightly semicircular in valvular view, with rounded ends, measuring 9.5 ± 0.3 SD (8.7-10.3) µm in length and 7.1 ± 0.4 (6.5-8.0) µm in width/thickness. The spore wall was composed of 2 symmetrical valves united along a slightly curved suture line, each displaying 10 to 11 elevated surface ridges. Two equal subspherical polar capsules, 3.7 ± 0.3 (3.0-4.1) µm long and 3.0 ± 0.2 (2.6-3.2) µm wide, were located separately at the spore's extremities. Each polar capsule contained a polar filament forming 4 to 5 coils. The sporoplasm was binucleate and contained numerous sporoplasmosomes. Morphological data, tissue tropism, and molecular analysis of the small subunit rDNA gene identified this parasite as a new species of Zschokkella. Maximum parsimony, neighbor-joining, and maximum likelihood inferences clustered the parasite in a subclade containing other Zschokkella species parasitizing the gall bladder of brackish and marine fish hosts, located within the coelozoic clade of the major freshwater clade; this supports the existence of a marine subclade within the 'freshwater' clade, as well as the existence of a correlation between tissue tropism and myxosporean phylogeny.

Parasites are affected by the environment where their hosts live, having a specific distribution among their hosts and occupying a well-defined microhabitat. The present work aims to describe the metazoan ectoparasite fauna of Scomber scombrus, namely its distribution at the macro- and microhabitat levels. For that, fish from two different Portuguese regions, Matosinhos (n = 40) and Figueira da Foz (n = 39), were examined for macroectoparasites. S. scombrus of Matosinhos presented four different parasite species, whilst fish from Figueira da Foz presented five species. All parasites belonged to Monogenea, Copepoda, or Isopoda. The main differences between infection levels of fish from the two localities were found in Grubea cochlear (higher infection levels in Matosinhos) and Caligus pelamydis (where the highest values were found in Figueira da Foz). Regarding the microhabitat of the reported ectoparasites, it could be seen that every species has a very specific distribution within the host: G. cochlear and Kuhnia scombri have a preference for the inner medial areas of gills, Kuhnia sprostonae for the pseudobranchs, and C. pelamydis for the internal wall of opercula. The numerical and functional responses to interspecific competition were absent. These results support the idea that the parasite driving forces of community structure are the reinforcement of reproductive barriers and the enhancement of chances to mate.

The introduction of a drink in the mouth and the action of saliva and enzymes cause the perception of basic tastes and some aromas perceived in a retro-nasal way. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of the type of alcoholic beverage (beer, wine, and brandy) on lingual lipase and α-amylase activity and in-mouth pH. It was possible to see that the pH values (drink and saliva) differed significantly from the pH values of the initial drinks. Moreover, the α-amylase activity was significantly higher when the panel members tasted a colorless brandy, namely Grappa. Red wine and wood-aged brandy also induced greater α-amylase activity than white wine and blonde beer. Additionally, tawny port wine induced greater α-amylase activity than red wine. The flavor characteristics of red wines due to skin maceration and the contact of the brandy with the wood can cause a synergistic effect between beverages considered "tastier" and the activity of human α-amylase. We can conclude that saliva-beverage chemical interactions may depend on the saliva composition but also on the chemical composition of the beverage, namely its constitution in acids, alcohol concentration, and tannin content. This work is an important contribution to the e-flavor project, the development of a sensor system capable of mimicking the human perception of flavor. Furthermore, a better understanding of saliva-drink interactions allow us to comprehend which and how salivary parameters can contribute to taste and flavor perception.

Anisakiosis is a significant zoonotic disease caused by parasitic nematodes of the Anisakis genus. It can be contracted by humans through the consumption of raw or undercooked fish contaminated with the parasite, leading to gastrointestinal and allergic symptoms. While anisakiosis is not frequently documented in Portugal, the presence of allergic reactions to Anisakis in Spain suggests ongoing exposure in the Iberian Peninsula. To address this concern, the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research in Porto, Portugal, in collaboration with the Biology Centre of Czech Academy of Sciences in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic, has proposed a project entitled 'Assessing Portuguese Health Risks: Anisakis Parasite in Atlantic Chub Mackerel (Scomber colias) Sold in Portuguese Markets' under the European Food Risk Assessment Fellowship Programme. The primary objective of the project is to gather valuable epidemiological data on the host, Atlantic chub mackerel (S. colias) and the parasitic nematode (Anisakis spp.) with the focus on assessing contamination levels and evaluating potential health risks associated with anisakiosis in the Portuguese population. By conducting this research, the project aims to contribute to the understanding of anisakiosis and its impact on public health in Portugal. Investigation of the presence of the Anisakis parasite in Atlantic chub mackerel sold in Portuguese markets will provide crucial insights into the risks associated with consuming raw or undercooked fish. Ultimately, our findings will aid in the development of preventive measures and guidelines to ensure the well-being of the Portuguese population.
