RESUMO

Cancer accounted for 10 million deaths in 2020, nearly one in every six deaths annually. Despite advancements, the contemporary clinical management of human neoplasms faces a number of challenges. Surgical removal of tumor tissues is often not possible technically, while radiation and chemotherapy pose the risk of damaging healthy cells, tissues, and organs, presenting complex clinical challenges. These require a paradigm shift in developing new therapeutic modalities moving towards a more personalized and targeted approach. The tumor-agnostic philosophy, one of these new modalities, focuses on characteristic molecular signatures of transformed cells independently of their traditional histopathological classification. These include commonly occurring DNA aberrations in cancer cells, shared metabolic features of their homeostasis or immune evasion measures of the tumor tissues. The first dedicated, FDA-approved tumor-agnostic agent's profound progression-free survival of 78% in mismatch repair-deficient colorectal cancer paved the way for the accelerated FDA approvals of novel tumor-agnostic therapeutic compounds. Here, we review the historical background, current status, and future perspectives of this new era of clinical oncology.

RESUMO

Based on recent advances in research of chronic inflammatory conditions, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests a close correlation between the microbiota of the gastrointestinal tract and the physiologic activity of the immune system. This raises the idea that disturbances of the GI ecosystem contribute to the unfolding of chronic diseases including neurodegenerative pathologies. Here, we overview our current understanding on the putative interaction between the gut microbiota and the immune system from the aspect of multiple sclerosis, one of the autoimmune conditions accompanied by severe chronic neuroinflammation that affects millions of people worldwide.

RESUMO

This study aimed to carry out a scientometric review of rice husk ash (RHA) concrete to assess the various aspects of the literature. Conventional review studies have limitations in terms of their capacity to connect disparate portions of the literature in a comprehensive and accurate manner. Science mapping, co-occurrence, and co-citation are a few of the most difficult phases of advanced research. The sources with the most articles, co-occurrences of keywords, the most prolific authors in terms of publications and citations, and areas actively involved in RHA concrete research are identified during the analysis. The Scopus database was used to extract bibliometric data for 917 publications that were then analyzed using the VOSviewer (version: 1.6.17) application. This study will benefit academics in establishing joint ventures and sharing innovative ideas and strategies because of the statistical and graphical representation of contributing authors and countries.

RESUMO

In this research, we have considered the convective heat transfer analysis on peristaltic flow of Rabinowitsch fluid through an elliptical cross section duct. The Pseudoplastic and Dilatant characteristics of non-Newtonian fluid flow are analyzed in detail. The Rabinowitsch fluid model shows Pseudoplastic fluid nature for [Formula: see text] and Dilatant fluid behaviour for [Formula: see text] The governing equations are transformed to dimensionless form after substituting pertinent parameters and by applying the long wavelength approximation. The non-dimensional momentum and energy equations are solved analytically to obtain the exact velocity and exact temperature solutions of the flow. A novel polynomial of order six having ten constants is introduced first time in this study to solve the energy equation exactly for Rabinowitsch fluid flow through an elliptic domain. The analytically acquired solutions are studied graphically for the effective analysis of the flow. The flow is found to diminish quickly in the surrounding conduit boundary for Dilatant fluid as compared to the Pseudoplastic fluid. The temperature depicted the opposite nature for Pseudoplastic and Dilatant fluids. The flow is examined to plot the streamlines for both Pseudoplastic and Dilatant fluids by rising the flow rate.

RESUMO

In this study, the durability of cement-based repairs was observed, especially at the interface of debonding initiation and propagation between the substrate-overlay of thin-bonded cement-based material, using monotonic tests experimentally and numerically. Overlay or repair material (OM) is a cement-based mortar with the addition of metallic fibres (30 kg/m3) and rubber particles (30% as a replacement for sand), while the substrate is a plain mortar without any addition, known as control. Direct tension tests were conducted on OM in order to obtain the relationship between residual stress-crack openings (σ-w law). Similarly, tensile tests were conducted on the substrate-overlay interface to draw the relationship between residual stress and opening of the substrate-overlay interface. Three-point monotonic bending tests were performed on the composite beam of the substrate-overlay in order to observe the structural response of the repaired beam. The digital image correlation (DIC) method was utilized to examine the debonding propagation along the interface. Based on the different parameters obtained through the above-mentioned experiments, a three-point bending monotonic test was modelled through finite elements using a software package developed in France called CAST3M. Structural behaviour of repaired beams observed by experimental results and that analysed by numerical simulation are in coherence. It is concluded from the results that the hybrid use of fibres and rubber particles in repaired material provides a synergetic effect by improving its strain capacity, restricting crack openings by the transfer of stress from the crack. This enhances the durability of repair by controlling propagation of the interface debonding.

RESUMO

Membrane separation processes are prevalent in industrial wastewater treatment because they are more effective than conventional methods at addressing global water issues. Consequently, the ideal membranes with high mechanical strength, thermal characteristics, flux, permeability, porosity, and solute removal capacity must be prepared to aid in the separation process for wastewater treatment. Rubber-based membranes have shown the potential for high mechanical properties in water separation processes to date. In addition, the excellent sustainable practice of natural fibers has attracted great attention from industrial players and researchers for the exploitation of polymer composite membranes to improve the balance between the environment and social and economic concerns. The incorporation of natural fiber in thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) as filler and pore former agent enhances the mechanical properties, and high separation efficiency characteristics of membrane composites are discussed. Furthermore, recent advancements in the fabrication technique of porous membranes affected the membrane's structure, and the performance of wastewater treatment applications is reviewed.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) have become an emerging global pollutant due to their widespread dispersion and potential threats to marine ecosystems. However, studies on MPs in estuarine and coastal ecosystems of Bangladesh are very limited. Here, we conducted the first study on abundance, distribution, characteristics, and risk assessment of microplastics in the sediment of Karnaphuli River estuary, Bangladesh. Microplastic particles were extracted from sediments of 30 stations along the estuary by density separation and then enumerated and characterized using a stereomicroscope and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. In the collected sediment of the Karnaphuli River estuary, the number of MPs varied from 22.29 to 59.5 items kg-1 of dry weight. The mean abundance was higher in the downstream and left banks of the estuary, whereas the predominant shape, colour, and size of MPs were films (35%), and white (19%), and 1-5 mm (30.38%), respectively. Major polymer types were polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene, polyethylene, cellulose, and nylon. MPs were found to pose risks (low to high) in the sediment of the estuary, with the highest risk occurring at one station near a sewage outlet, according to the results of risk analyses using the pollution risk index, polymer risk index (H), contamination factors, and pollution load index (PLI). The single value index, PLI, clearly demonstrated that all sampling sites were considerably polluted with microplastics (PLI > 1). H values showed toxic polymers, even in lower proportions, possess higher polymeric hazard scores and vice versa. This investigation uncovered new insights on the status of MPs in the sediments of the Karnaphuli River estuary, laying the groundwork for future research and control of microplastic pollution and management.
