RESUMO

The detection depth of current borehole acoustic reflection imaging is only tens of meters without high resolution. This considerably limits its wide application in the identification and fine description of unconventional reservoirs and in the optimization of drilling trajectories. Increasing the directional energy from the transmitter to a geological structure is an excellent way to solve this issue. In this study, a plasma source with a parabolic reflector was introduced during borehole acoustic reflection imaging. First, an experimental system was built for testing the plasma source. Next, the acoustic-electrical characteristics and directional radiation of the source were studied using experiments and a numerical simulation. Finally, the advantages, disadvantages, and feasibility of the plasma-transmitting source were analyzed; some suggestions for further work on the source and its logging application were proposed. The experimental and simulation results show that the use of a plasma source with a parabolic reflector can increase the detection depth of borehole acoustic reflection imaging to hundreds of meters with high resolution. This is crucial in imaging the geological structures near boreholes and enhancing oil-gas exploration and development.

RESUMO

An on-chip supercontinuum (SC) source spanning from 900 nm to 2000 nm has been experimentally presented and analyzed based on a Ge11.5As24S64.5 (GeAsS) planar waveguide at telecommunication wavelength. The nonlinear response parameter (γ) of the GeAsS waveguide is estimated to be ∼12/W/m at the pump wavelength using resonant grating waveguide (RGW) nonlinear refractive index (n2=2×10-18m2/W), which is measured by the z-scan technique. The dispersion of the waveguide is carefully engineered based on the refractive index of the GeAsS film where the film structure is confirmed by a Raman spectrum exhibiting consistency with the corresponding glass. The results suggest that the GeAsS glass is expected to be an ideal platform for on-chip devices.

RESUMO

A technique is proposed to measure the high-resolution and wide-band characterization of amplitude, phase responses, and polarization property of optical components. This technique combines the optical spectrum stitching and optical channel estimation methods. Two kinds of fiber Bragg grating based Fabry-Perot cavities with ultrafine structures have been characterized based on this technique. By using 1024 point fast Fourier transform and a narrow linewidth, wavelength-tunable laser source, a frequency resolution of ~10 MHz is realized with an optical measurement range beyond 250 GHz.

RESUMO

To investigate the effects of psychological stress on the masticatory muscles of rats, a communication box was applied to induce the psychological stress (PS) in rats. The successful establishment of psychological stimulation was confirmed by elevated serum levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and changed behaviors in the elevated plusmaze apparatus. The energy metabolism of the bilateral masseter muscles was tested via chemocolorimetric analysis, whereas muscle ultrastructure was assessed by electron microscopy. In comparison to the control group, the PS group showed evidence of swollen mitochondria with cristae loss and reduced matrix density in the masticatory muscles after three weeks of stimulation; after five weeks of stimulation, severe vacuolar changes to the mitochondria were observed. Increased vascular permeability of the masticatory muscle capillaries was found in the five-week PS rats. In addition, there was decreased activity of Na(+)-K(+)ATPase and Ca(2+)-ATPase and a simultaneous increase in the activity of lactate dehydrogenase and lactic acid in the masticatory muscles of PS rats. Together, these results indicate that psychological stress induces alterations in the ultrastructure and energy metabolism of masticatory muscles in rats.

RESUMO

AIMS: Although the pathophysiology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is still not completely understood, the deregulated microglia polarization and neuroinflammation have been shown to contribute to the pathogenesis and progression of this disease. In the present study, we aimed to determine whether hirsutella sinensis (HS) could reduce neuroinflammatory and pathological changes in the spinal cord of SOD1G93A model mice of ALS and consequently ameliorate disease onset and progression. METHODS: SOD1G93A mice were chronically treated with HS by gavage. Their lifespan was recorded, and motor behavior was evaluated by rotarod test. The pathological changes in skeletal muscles and motor neurons in spinal cords were assessed by immunofluorescent staining and hematoxylin-eosin staining. The microglia activation and neuroinflammation were determined by immunofluorescent staining and RT-PCR. RESULTS: Our data suggested that repeated HS administration prolonged the lifespan and extended disease duration of ALS mice without significant delay on disease onset. HS ameliorated the pathological changes in the motor neurons and gastrocnemius muscles. Moreover, HS promoted the transition of microglia from pro-inflammatory M1 to anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype in the spinal cord of ALS mice. CONCLUSION: All these findings indicate that HS may serve as a potential therapeutic candidate for the treatment of ALS.

RESUMO

Cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) is the only necessary CDK in cell proliferation and a novel target in the development of anticancer drugs. 8-Hydroxypiperidinemethyl-baicalein (BA-j) is a novel selective CDK1 inhibitor with broad spectrum anti-cancer activity (IC50 12.3 µM) and 2 tumor xenografts. Because of the differential mechanisms controlling redox-states in normal and cancer cells, BA-j can capture oxygen free radicals ((·)O2(-)) and selectively increase the level of H2O2 in cancer cells, thereby specifically oxidize and activate the intrinsic apoptosis pathway bypassing the extrinsic death receptor pathway, thus inducing apoptosis in cancer cells rather than in normal cells. BA-j is different from cytotoxic anticancer drugs which can activate both the intrinsic apoptosis pathway and the extrinsic death receptor pathway, and therefore harm normal cells while killing cancer cells. The molecular and biochemical mechanisms of reactive oxygen species (ROS) regulation suggest that BA-j may be developed into a novel anticancer agent.
