RESUMO

We present a comprehensive study using dissipative particle dynamics simulations to investigate phase separation kinetics (PSK) in three-dimensional (3d) polymeric fluids under random photo-illumination. We consider two scenarios: polymer blends with active radicals at one end of each immiscible chain and block copolymer (BCP) melts with photosensitive bonds linking incompatible blocks. The phase separation (PS) is induced by temperature quench of the initial homogeneously mixed system. Simultaneously, the system experiences random photo-illumination, simulated by two concurrent random events: (a) the recombination of active radicals in polymer blends and (b) the breaking of photosensitive bonds in BCP chains. Variations in the bond-breaking probability, Pb, mimic the change in light intensity. The length scale follows power law growth, R(t) ∼ tϕ, where ϕ represents the growth exponent. Increasing Pb results in a gradual transition in growth kinetics from micro-PS to macro-PS, accompanied by corresponding transition probabilities for both systems. Micro-PSK dominates the evolution process at low Pb values. The scaling functions exhibit data overlap for most scaled distances, indicating the statistical self-similarity of evolving patterns. Our study enhances the understanding of PSK in polymeric fluids, revealing the impact of photosensitive bonds and active radicals. Furthermore, it suggests the potential for designing novel polymeric materials with desired properties.

The cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between work-related factors, perceived work fatigue (PWF) and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among handicraft artisans. 364 artisans participated in a questionnaire survey, and a structural equation model (SEM) was developed to explore the direct and indirect relationships between these factors using partial least squares analysis. The SEM explained 98.2% of the variance in MSDs and revealed that exposure to biomechanical factors had a direct impact on PWF and MSDs, with PWF mediating the effect of biomechanical factors on MSDs. Additionally, job demand was found to be positively associated with MSDs, while job control and social support reduced the risk of MSDs. The findings underscore the importance of strategic initiatives to mitigate the risk of developing MSDs among artisans. The study also highlights the potential of SEM as a novel framework for understanding the complex pathogenesis of MSDs in occupational health research.Practitioner summary: The study sought to comprehensively examine the intricate relationships among work-related factors, PWF, and MSDs. To achieve this, an SEM approach was employed to capture both direct and indirect relationships between these factors, employing partial least squares analysis. Findings revealed SEM as an innovative framework for understanding the intricate development of MSDs.

RESUMO

Anguina tritici, the wheat seed gall nematode, causes the 'ear-cockle' or seed gall disease of wheat (Triticum sp.), leading to an extensive decline of yield (30-70%) in underdeveloped wheat cultivating countries of the world. The nematode is known to survive in anhydrobiotic conditions for up to 32 years. Here, we present the first transcriptome assembly of A. tritici, which will be a valuable resource for understanding the genes responsible for nematode survival and above-ground plant parasitism. The final 133.2 Mb assembly consists of 105606 open reading frames (including isoforms) with the following BUSCO scores against Nematoda database: 80.3% complete (16.4% single copy and 63.9% duplicated), 2.1% fragmented, and 17.6% missing.

Goat milk has achieved significant place in human diet owing to its enormous therapeutic properties. There exists a scope of value-addition of goat milk to potentiate its health benefits by incorporating herbs and plants. Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia), a traditional medicinal plant with rich bioactive composition, can enhance the bioactive properties and shelf-life of goat milk. To this end, a study was conducted to develop shelf-stable giloy-goat milk beverage (GGB) by adding debittered giloy juice to goat milk (GM) and analyse the detailed product profile including proximate composition, bioactive properties, sensory, rheological, and structural characterisation. GGB resulted in two-fold increase (P < 0.05) in antioxidant activity and total phenolic content, thus enhancing the bioactive properties of the beverage as compared to GM. Further, increase in the particle size of GGB was observed along with components interaction, which was confirmed by FTIR, scanning electron and fluorescent microscopy. Storage stability studies indicated that bioactive properties of GGB remained unaffected (P > 0.05) by the sterilization process up to 90 days and sensory characteristics were not compromised till 105 days of storage. Therefore, the developed GGB is considered to be a shelf-stable beverage that retains its bioactive and sensory properties even after sterilization, making it a promising functional dairy product.

RESUMO

Boron nitride has gained wide-spread attention globally owing to its outstanding characteristics, such as a large surface area, high thermal resistivity, great mechanical strength, low density, and corrosion resistance. This review compiles state-of-the-art synthesis techniques, including mechanical exfoliation, chemical exfoliation, chemical vapour deposition (CVD), and green synthesis for the fabrication of hexagonal boron nitride and its composites, their structural and chemical properties, and their applications in hydrogen production and environmental remediation. Additionally, the adsorptive and photocatalytic properties of boron nitride-based nanocomposites for the removal of heavy metals, dyes, and pharmaceuticals from contaminated waters are discussed. Lastly, the scope of future research, including the facile synthesis and large-scale applicability of boron nitride-based nanomaterials for wastewater treatment, is presented. This review is expected to deliver preliminary knowledge of the present state and properties of boron nitride-based nanomaterials, encouraging the future study and development of these materials for their applications in various fields.

The current study reported a facile co-precipitation technique for synthesizing novel NiCo2S4/chitosan nanocomposite. The photocatalytic activity of the prepared nanocomposite was evaluated using congo red (CR) dye as a target pollutant. The central composite design was employed to examine the impact of different reaction conditions on CR dye degradation. This study selected the pH, photocatalyst loading, initial CR concentration and reaction time as reaction parameters, while the degradation efficiency (%) was selected as the response. A desirability factor of 1 suggested the adequacy of the model. Maximum degradation of 93.46% of 35 ppm dye solution was observed after 60 min of visible light irradiation. The response to surface methodology (RSM) is a helpful technique to predict the optimum reaction conditions of the photodegradation of CR dye. Moreover, NiCo2S4/Ch displayed high recyclability and reusability up to four consecutive cycles. The present study suggests that the prepared NiCo2S4/chitosan nanocomposite could prove to be a viable photocatalyst for the treatment of dye-contaminated wastewater.

INTRODUCTION: Goat milk has poorer fermentation characteristics due to the absence or only traces of αs1-casein, due to which goat yoghurt contains a less dense gel structure. Moreover, the fermentation characteristics of the milk vary between the breeds of the same species. Therefore, it becomes imperative to explore a few metabolites which could regulate the techno-functional properties of goat yoghurt. OBJECTIVES: This study was aimed at relating the metabolite profile of yoghurt prepared from milk of Barbari, an indigenous goat breed of India, and its techno-functional properties (firmness, whey syneresis, and flow behaviour) using multivariate data analysis and regression models. RESULTS: Goat yoghurt was prepared with two different total solids (TS) levels (12 and 16%) and cultures, namely, commercial culture comprising a thermophilic yoghurt culture (A) and NCDC-263 comprising a mixed yoghurt culture (B). Results demonstrated a significant difference (p < 0.05) in whey syneresis with the increase in the TS level. Flow behaviour of all yoghurt samples showed a decrease in viscosity with an increase in shear rate, which confirmed its non-Newtonian behaviour and shear thinning nature, whereas frequency sweep confirmed its viscoelastic nature. Firmness was the most affected under the influence of different TS and culture levels. It was higher (p < 0.05) for 16-A, followed by 16-3B, and minimum for 12-2B. GC-MS-based metabolomics of the yoghurt revealed a total of 102 metabolites, out of which 15 metabolites were differentially expressed (p < 0.05), including 2-hydroxyethyl palmitate, alpha-mannobiose, and myo-inositol. Multivariate data analysis revealed clear separation among groups using principal component analysis and several correlations using a correlation heat map. Further, regression analysis exhibited methylamine (0.669) and myo-inositol (0.947) with higher regression coefficients (R2 values) exceeding 0.6, thus demonstrating their significant influence on the techno-functional properties, mainly firmness, of the yogurt. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, A gas chromatography-based metabolomics approach could successfully establish a relationship between the metabolome and the techno-functional properties of the yoghurt.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of continuous arch and piggyback mechanics in a straight wire appliance (SWA) for the alignment of buccal and variably vertically positioned maxillary canines. Methods: A three-dimensional finite element model with near-normal occlusion and buccal and vertically displaced maxillary canines was used. Two groups were created to simulate two commonly used SWAs techniques, continuous archwire (Group 1) and piggyback models (Group 2). Each group had three subgroups with varying vertical displacement of the canine from 2 to 6 mm from the occlusal plane. The displacement and stress distribution were noted in each group. Results: As the vertical displacement increased in Group 1, the concentration of von Mises stress increased progressively at the incisal third (0.36, 0.41 and 0.44 MPa) at 2, 4, and 6 mm, respectively, with decreased maximum occlusal movement in the vertical plane with respect to the canine. Group 2 exhibited a similar pattern but greater occlusal movement of the canine compared with Group 1. Conclusion: A vertical displacement of 4 mm is the optimal level at which continuous arch mechanics should be considered. For displacements beyond 4 mm, the piggyback wire technique is a suitable alternative.

Lactose hydrolysed concentrated milk was prepared using ß-galactosidase enzyme (4.76U/mL) with a reaction period of 12 h at 4 °C. Addition of polysaccharides (5 % maltodextrin/ß-cyclodextrin) to concentrated milk either before or after lactose hydrolysis did not result in significant differences (p > 0.05) in degree of hydrolysis (% DH) of lactose and residual lactose content (%). Three different inlet temperatures (165 °C, 175 °C and 185 °C) were used for the preparation of powders which were later characterised based on physico-chemical and maillard browning characteristics. Moisture content, solubility and available lysine content of the powders decreased significantly, whereas, browning parameters i.e., browning index, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, furosine content increased significantly (p < 0.05) with an increase in inlet air temperature. The powder was finally prepared with 5 % polysaccharide and an inlet air temperature of 185 °C which reduced maillard browning. Protein-polysaccharide interactions were identified using Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and determination of free amino groups in the powder samples. Maltodextrin and ß-cyclodextrin containing powder samples exhibited lower free amino groups and higher degree of graft value as compared to control sample which indicated protein-polysaccharide interactions. Results obtained from Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy also confirmed strong protein-polysaccharide interactions, moreover a significant decrease in fluorescence intensity was also observed in the powder samples. These interactions between the proteins and polysaccharides reduced the maillard browning in powders.

The considerable value of whey is evident from its significant potential applications and contributions to the functional food and nutraceutical market. The by-products were individually obtained during functional chhurpi and novel soy chhurpi cheese production using defined lactic acid bacterial strains of Sikkim Himalaya's traditional chhurpi. Hydrolysis of substrate proteins by starter proteinases resulted in a comparable peptide content in whey and soy whey which was associated with antioxidant and ACE inhibition potential. Peptidome analysis of Lactobacillus delbrueckii WS4 whey and soy whey revealed the presence of several bioactive peptides including the multifunctional peptides PVVVPPFLQPE and YQEPVLGPVRGPFPIIV. In silico analyses predicted the antihypertensive potential of whey and soy whey peptides with strong binding affinity for ACE active sites. QSAR models predicted the highest ACE inhibition potential (IC50) for the ß-casein-derived decapeptide PVRGPFPIIV (0.95 µM) and the Kunitz trypsin inhibitor protein-derived nonapeptide KNKPLVVQF (16.64 µM). Chhurpi whey and soy whey can be explored as a valuable source of diverse and novel bioactive peptides for applications in designer functional foods development.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a diode laser (810 nm) for circumferential supracrestal fiberotomy compared with conventional surgical circumferential supracrestal fiberotomy in preventing rotational relapse in orthodontically treated cases. Methods: Seventy-six patients (age range from 18-25 years) with mandibular crowding ranging between 5-8 mm and rotation >10˚ (from the individualized arch form) treated non-extraction with a straight wire appliance (McLaughlin, Bennet, Trevisi; 0.022 inch) prescription were selected for the study. The patients were randomly allocated into 3 groups of 22 patients each: Group 1 (Control group-No circumferential supracrestal fiberotomy), Group 2 (Conventional circumferential supracrestal fiberotomy), and Group 3 (diode laser circumferential supracrestal fiberotomy). After leveling and alignment up to "0.019x0.025" stainless steel wire, the arch wire was removed for a period of 1 month. Impressions were made and the poured casts were scanned. The 3D models (.STL files) were evaluated for changes in the irregularity index and rotational relapse. Results: One-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey's test were used for data analysis. Group 1 (Control group) showed greater relapse in both irregularity index and rotation angulations in comparison with Groups 2 and 3, which was statistically significant (p<0.001). There was no statistically significant difference in irregularity index and rotational relapse between Group 2 and Group 3 (p=0.35 for irregularity index, and p=0.41 for rotational relapse). Conclusion: The control group showed significantly more relapse than both circumferential supracrestal fiberotomy groups. Both conventional and diode laser circumferential supracrestal fiberotomy decreased the relapse tendency.

The present study focuses on the synthesis and characterisation of a lightweight ceramic material with electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties, achieved using mullite containing micrometre-sized hollow spheres (cenospheres) and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles. This research explores compositions with varying CoFe2O4 contents ranging from 0 up to 20 wt.%. Conventional sintering in an air atmosphere is carried out at a temperature between 1100 and 1300 °C. The addition of ferrite nanoparticles was found to enhance the process of sintering cenospheres, resulting in improved material density and mechanical properties. Furthermore, this study reveals a direct correlation between the concentration of ferrite nanoparticles and the electromagnetic properties of the material. By increasing the concentration of ferrite nanoparticles, the electromagnetic shielding effect of the material (saturation magnetisation (Ms) and remanent magnetisation (Mr)) was observed to strengthen. These findings provide valuable insights into designing and developing lightweight ceramic materials with enhanced electromagnetic shielding capabilities. The synthesized ceramic material holds promise for various applications that require effective electromagnetic shielding, such as in the electronics, telecommunications, and aerospace industries.
