RESUMO

There have been constant efforts to find 'exotic' quantum spin-liquid (QSL) materials. Some of the transition metal insulators dominated by the direction-dependent anisotropic exchange interaction ('Kitaev model' for honeycomb network of magnetic ions) are considered to be promising cases for the same. In such Kitaev insulators, QSL is achieved from the zero-field antiferromagnetic state by the application of magnetic-field, suppressing other exchange interactions responsible for magnetic order. Here, we show that the features attributable to long-range magnetic ordering of the intermetallic compound, Tb5Si3, (TN= 69 K), containing honey-comb network of Tb ions, are completely suppressed by a critical applied field,Hcr, in heat-capacity and magnetization data, mimicking the behavior of Kitaev physics candidates. The neutron diffraction patterns as a function ofHreveal that it is an incommensurate magnetic structure that gets suppressed, showing peaks arising from multiple wave vectors beyondHcr. Increasing magnetic entropy as a function ofHwith a peak in the magnetically ordered state is in support of some kind of magnetic disorder in a narrow field range afterHcr. Such a high-field behavior for a metallic heavy rare-earth system to our knowledge has not been reported in the past and therefore is intriguing.

We have investigated magnetic, structural and dielectric properties of Bi5FeTi3O15(BFTO) in the temperature range 5K-300 K. Using diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and x-ray absorption fine structure measurements, iso-structural modifications are observed at low temperatures (≈100 K). The analysis of dielectric constant data revealed signatures of dielectric relaxation, concomitant with these structural modifications in BFTO at the same temperatures. Further, employing complementary experimental methods, it is shown that the distribution of Fe/Ti ions in BFTO is random. With the help of techniques that probe magnetism at various length and time scales, it is shown that the phase-pure BFTO is non-magnetic down to the lowest temperatures.

The present work reports magnetic, magnetoelastic and magnetoelectric (ME) response of scandium (Sc) doped barium hexaferrite, BaFe10Sc2O19. DC magnetization shows that partial substitution of non-magnetic Sc for Fe in barium hexaferrite results in a reduction of Curie temperature (T C) from 730 K known for the parent compound BaFe12O19 to 430 K. Magnetization measurements show that, in BaFe10Sc2O19, in addition to the magnetic transition at 250 K corresponding to longitudinal conical magnetic structure, another magnetic anomaly occurs in the vicinity of 50 K (T max). Ac susceptibility and magnetic relaxation show that the magnetic transition at T max is associated with spin glass like dynamics. Field dependence of this glassy transition temperature follows the Almeida-Thouless (A-T) line expected for spin glass-like behaviour. Unit cell volume obtained from the neutron diffraction (ND) measurements shows deviation from the Debye-Gruneisen behaviour below 50 K, revealing the magnetoelastic coupling. Existence of magnetoelastic coupling is also confirmed by Raman spectra as Raman modes show anomalous changes around 50 K and also indicates presence of lattice modulation. Further, the magnetic structure obtained from ND data shows that incommensurate longitudinal conical ferrimagnetic structure persists from 210 K to 3 K. The integrated intensity of (0 0 2) peak and magnetic moments undergoes a subtle change below 50 K that seems to favour coexistence of long range magnetic ordering and spin glass-like dynamics. Significant magneto-dielectric effect was observed around 50 K. Temperature dependent studies of dielectric constant and pyroelectric current indicate the presence of ferroelectricity even in zero magnetic field. Further, existence of ME coupling below 50 K is confirmed by temperature dependence of pyroelectric current under magnetic fields up to 70 kOe. In short, this work identifies a new magnetic anomaly around 50 K, which is spin-glass-like inducing magnetoelastic and ME anomalies, even in the absence of external magnetic fields.

Using high resolution powder x-ray and neutron diffraction experiments, we determined the off-centered displacement of the ions within a unit cell and magnetoelectric coupling in nanoscale BiFeO3 (≈20-200 nm). We found that both the off-centered displacement of the ions and magnetoelectric coupling exhibit nonmonotonic variation with particle size. They increase as the particle size reduces from bulk and reach maximum around 30 nm. With further decrease in particle size, they decrease precipitously. The magnetoelectric coupling is determined by the anomaly in off-centering of ions around the magnetic transition temperature (T N ). The ions, in fact, exhibit large anomalous displacement around the T N which is analyzed using group theoretical approach. It underlies the nonmonotonic particle-size-dependence of off-centre displacement of ions and magnetoelectric coupling. The nonmonotonic variation of magnetoelectric coupling with particle size is further verified by direct electrical measurement of remanent ferroelectric hysteresis loops at room temperature under zero and ∼20 kOe magnetic field. Competition between enhanced lattice strain and compressive pressure appears to be causing the nonmonotonic particle-size-dependence of off-centre displacement while coupling between piezo and magnetostriction leads to nonmonotonicity in the variation of magnetoelectric coupling.

We report the experimental observation of spin reorientation in the double perovskite Ho2FeCoO6. The magnetic phase transitions in this compound are characterized and studied through magnetization and specific heat, and the magnetic structures are elucidated through neutron powder diffraction. Two magnetic phase transitions are observed in this compound-one at [Formula: see text] K, from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic, and the other at [Formula: see text] K, from a phase with mixed magnetic structures to a single phase through a spin reorientation process. The magnetic structure in the temperature range 200-45 K is a mixed phase of the irreducible representations [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], both of which are antiferromagnetic. The phase with mixed magnetic structures that exists in Ho2FeCoO6 gives rise to a large thermal hysteresis in magnetization that extends from 200 K down to the spin reorientation temperature. At T N2, the magnetic structure transforms to [Formula: see text]. Though long-range magnetic order is established in the transition metal lattice, it is seen that only short-range magnetic order prevails in the Ho3+ lattice. Our results should motivate further detailed studies on single crystals in order to explore the spin reorientation process, spin switching and the possibility of anisotropic magnetic interactions giving rise to electric polarization in Ho2FeCoO6.

The present work investigates the superior ability of LaFeO3 (LaFeO) and La0.8Ca0.2FeO2.95 (LaCaFeO) nanoparticles to detect 3 ppm SO2 gas. The influence of calcium substitution on the sensing behaviour of LaFeO has been studied. High resolution TEM images show that the particle sizes of LaFeO and LaCaFeO are less than 100 nm and SEM images show the agglomeration of interconnected nanoparticles. Both LaFeO and LaCaFeO crystallize in the orthorhombic crystal system with the space group Pbnm. Rietveld analysis of neutron diffraction data showed that LaCaFeO has lattice oxygen vacancies. In addition, magnetic refinements on both the samples have been carried out. The presence of lattice oxygen vacancies in LaCaFeO is qualitatively supported by Raman and XPS measurements. Electrical characterization showed increased conductivity for the LaCaFeO sample, influencing their sensing performance significantly. The LaCaFeO nanoparticles exhibit higher sensitivity, faster response time, rapid recovery time and good recyclability for sensing 3 ppm SO2 gas. This enhanced sensing behaviour is attributed to the increased oxygen vacancies in the lattice as well as the surface. As a consequence, increased active sites are created in LaCaFeO, promoting redox reaction between the analyte and the sensing material. The results demonstrated that while LaFeO is a good gas sensor, p-type substitution by Ca(2+) renders this material an improved resistivity based gas sensor to detect low concentration SO2.

We report the synthesis and electric properties of nano-crystalline Tb1-xYxMnO3 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) compounds prepared by gel-combustion method. These samples were characterized by a number of techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, specific-heat measurement, neutron diffraction, and magnetic field dependent pyrocurrent measurement. All the samples crystallize in the orthorhombic structure with space group Pnma at room temperature. Anomalies were observed in low temperature specific-heat measurement corresponding to magnetic and electric phase transitions. The magnetic phase transitions occurred at ~35, ~22-28 and ~7 K for all the samples. Signatures of coupling between magnetic and electric order parameters were revealed by pyrocurrent measurements carried out in presence of magnetic fields.

We report a structural transition from the orthorhombic to the rhombohedral phase upon size reduction in nanocrystalline LaMnO(3+δ) (δ ≈ 0:03) as revealed through neutron diffraction studies. The transition occurs when the average particle (crystallite) size is taken below ~50 nm without change of δ, which is fixed at around 0.03 as measured by a number of characterization tools. The change in the crystallographic structure is accompanied by a change in the magnetic order, where the canted antiferromagnetic order with moments in the basal (ab) plane for the bulk changes to collinear ferromagnetic order with spins along the c-axis for the nanocrystals. The spontaneous ferromagnetic moment ~3 µ(B) and the transition temperature of 260 K in LaMnO(3+δ) nanocrystals are similar to those found in La0:67Ca0:33MnO3 which has a much higher Mn(4+) content. The likely origin is traced to change in magnetic exchange interactions due to change in Mn-O bond lengths which become almost identical in the MnO6 octahedron in the rhombohedral structure in the absence of Jahn-Teller distortion. The study provides an example of structural and magnetic phase transition driven purely by size reduction and with no change in the chemical constituents.

Magnetic behavior of the pseudo-binary alloy Hf(1-x)Ta(x)Fe(2) has been studied, for which the zero-field ferromagnetic (FM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperature is tuned near to T = 0 K. Our studies show that such composition lies around x = 0.230. Detailed magnetization studies on x = 0.225, 0.230 and 0.235 show thermomagnetic irreversibility at low temperature due to kinetic arrest of the first-order AFM-FM transition. All three compositions studied show a reentrant transition in the zero-field-cooled warming curve and non-monotonic variation of the upper critical field. The region in H-T space where these features of kinetic arrest manifest themselves increases with increasing Ta concentration.

Low temperature high magnetic field (57)Fe Mössbauer measurements were carried out on the inter-metallic compound Hf0.77Ta0.23Fe2 by following novel paths in H-T space. The ferromagnetic (FM) fraction at 5 K and zero magnetic field is shown to depend on the cooling field, i.e., the higher the field is, the higher the FM fraction is. Mössbauer spectra collected in the presence of a 4 T magnetic field show that the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spins are canted with respect to the applied magnetic field and hence contribute to the total bulk magnetization in this compound. The data also show an induced magnetic moment even at the 2a site of the AFM phase. Mössbauer spectra collected using the CHUF (cooling and heating in un-equal magnetic fields) protocol show a reentrant transition when the sample is cooled in zero field and measured during warming in 4 T, showing the FM state as the equilibrium state. This work is the first microscopic experimental evidence for the de-vitrification of the kinetically arrested magnetic state.

Neutron diffraction measurements, performed in the presence of an external magnetic field, have been used to show structural evidence for the kinetic arrest of the first order phase transition from (i) the high temperature austenite phase to the low temperature martensite phase in the magnetic shape memory alloy Ni37Co11Mn42.5Sn9.5, (ii) the higher temperature ferromagnetic phase to the lower temperature antiferromagnetic phase in the half-doped charge ordered compound La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and (iii) the formation of glass-like arrested states in both compounds. The cooling and heating under unequal fields protocol has been used to establish phase coexistence of metastable and equilibrium states, and also to demonstrate the devitrification of the arrested metastable states in the neutron diffraction patterns. We also explore the field­temperature dependent kinetic arrest line TK(H), through the transformation of the arrested phase to the equilibrium phase. This transformation has been observed isothermally in reducing H, as also on warming in constant H. TK is seen to increase as H increases in both cases, consistent with the low-T equilibrium phase having lower magnetization.

Temperature-dependent (57)Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy (5-723 K) and neutron diffraction (2-290 K) measurements are carried out on polycrystalline magnetoelectric GaFeO(3). From the neutron diffraction data, evidence for the magnetostriction and increased disorder at Fe sites close to the ferrimagnetic Curie transition temperature (T(C)) is observed. From the Mössbauer data, it is observed that the Lamb-Mössbauer factor as a function of temperature f(T), which is related to the integral over the first Brillouin zone of the phonon spectrum, shows a unequivocal variation at the T(C). The observations are discussed in terms of spin-phonon coupling. The observed average hyperfine fields from (57)Fe Mössbauer spectra match with the bulk magnetization data. A critical exponent (ß) of 0.38 ± 0.02 and a Debye temperature (θ(D)) of ~350 K is estimated from the (57)Fe Mössbauer data.

We report a detailed investigation of the magnetocaloric properties of self-doped polycrystalline LaMnO(3+δ) with δ = 0.04. Due to the self-doping effect, the system exhibits a magnetic transition from a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic-like canted magnetic state (CMS) at ~120 K, which is associated with an appreciably large magnetocaloric effect (MCE). The CMS is an inhomogeneous magnetic phase developing due to a steady growth of antiferromagnetic correlation in its predominant ferromagnetic state below ∼120 K. The stabilization of CMS in this material is concluded from a comprehensive analysis of magnetocaloric data using Landau theory, which is in excellent agreement with our neutron diffraction study. The magnetic entropy change versus temperature curves for different applied fields collapse into a single curve, revealing a universal behavior of MCE. Our studies suggest that investigation of MCE is an effective technique to acquire fundamental understanding about the basic magnetic structure of a system with complex competing interactions.

The chain-like system Ba(3)Cu(3)Sc(4)O(12) has potentially interesting magnetic properties due to the presence of Cu(2+) and a structure-suggested low dimensionality. We present magnetization M versus magnetic field H and temperature T, T- and H-dependent heat-capacity C(p), (45)Sc nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), muon spin rotation (µSR), neutron diffraction measurements and electronic structure calculations for Ba(3)Cu(3)Sc(4)O(12). The onset of magnetic long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) order at T(N) ∼ 16 K is consistently evidenced from the whole gamut of our data. A significant sensitivity of T(N) to the applied magnetic field H (T(N) ∼ 0 K for H = 70 kOe) is also reported. Coupled with a ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature (θ(CW) ∼ 65 K) in the susceptibility (from a 100 to 300 K fit), it is indicative of competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. These indications are corroborated by our density functional theory based electronic structure calculations, where we find the presence of significant ferromagnetic couplings between some copper ions whereas AF couplings were present between some others. Our experimental data, backed by our theoretical calculations, rule out the one-dimensional magnetic behavior suggested by the structure and the observed long-range order is due to the presence of non-negligible magnetic interactions between adjacent as well as next-nearest chains.

V79 Chinese hamster cells were constructed for stable expression of human cytochrome P450 3A4 with and without coexpression of human NADPH-cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase. Expression of the cDNAs was shown by Northern and Western analyses. Activity was tested by 6 beta-hydroxylation of testosterone for cytochrome P450 3A4 and by cytochrome c reduction for NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase. Five V79 cell lines were obtained expressing cytochrome P450 3A4, human NADPH-cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase, and both. Cytochrome P450 3A4 activity depended highly on cytochrome P450 reductase activity, with lowest activity when only the parental Chinese hamster cytochrome P450 reductase was present, 5- and 10-fold higher when coexpressed with the human NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase. Correspondingly, cytotoxic and genotoxic potency of aflatoxin B1 was increased by orders of magnitudes when human cytochrome P450 3A4 was coexpressed with the human NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase. The effect of NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase coexpression on cytochrome P450 3A4 activity was also tested by nifedipine oxidation and midazolam hydroxylation. Nifedipine oxidation was increased about 10-fold, 1-hydroxylation of midazolam and 4-hydroxylation of midazolam were increased 15-fold.
