BACKGROUND A significant number of atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrences occur after initial ablation, often due to pulmonary vein reconnections or triggers from non-pulmonary veins. MATERIAL AND METHODS Patients with paroxysmal AF who underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation for the first time were enrolled. Base on propensity score matching (1: 1 matching), 118 patients were selected for an optimized workflow for the radiofrequency catheter ablation of paroxysmal AF (OWCA) group and a conventional group. Comparative analysis of the acute and 12-month clinical outcomes was conducted. Moreover, an artificial intelligence analytics platform was used to evaluate the quality of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) circles. RESULTS PVI was successfully achieved in all patients. Incidence of first-pass isolation of bilateral PVI circles was higher (P=0.009) and acute pulmonary vein reconnections was lower (P=0.027) in the OWCA group than conventional group. The OWCA group displayed a significant reduction in the number of fractured points (P<0.001), stacked points (P=0.003), and a greater proportion of cases in which the radiofrequency index achieved the target value (P=0.003). Additionally, the contact force consistently met the force over time criteria (P<0.001) for bilateral PVI circles in the OWCA group, accompanied by a shorter operation time (P=0.017). During the 12-month follow-up period, the OWCA group exhibited a higher atrial arrhythmia-free survival rate following the initial ablation procedure than did the conventional group. CONCLUSIONS The optimized workflow for radiofrequency catheter ablation of paroxysmal AF could play a crucial role in creating higher quality PVI circles. This improvement is reflected in a significantly elevated 12-month atrial arrhythmia-free survival rate.

Heat stress is a common environmental factor in livestock breeding that has been shown to impact the development of antibiotic resistance within the gut microbiota of both human and animals. However, studies investigating the effect of temperature on antibiotic resistance in Enterococcus isolates remain limited. In this study, specific pathogen free (SPF) mice were divided into a control group maintained at normal temperature and an experimental group subjected to daily 1-h heat stress at 38 °C, respectively. Gene expression analysis was conducted to evaluate the activation of heat shock responsive genes in the liver of mice. Additionally, the antibiotic-resistant profile and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in fecal samples from mice were analyzed. The results showed an upregulation of heat-inducible proteins HSP27, HSP70 and HSP90 following heat stress exposure, indicating successful induction of cellular stress within the mice. Furthermore, heat stress resulted in an increase in the proportion of erythromycin-resistant Enterococcus isolates, escalating from 0 % to 0.23 % over a 30-day duration of heat stress. The resistance of Enterococcus isolates to erythromycin also had a 128-fold increase in minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) within the heated-stressed group compared to the control group. Additionally, a 2∼8-fold rise in chloramphenicol MIC was observed among these erythromycin-resistant Enterococcus isolates. The acquisition of ermB genes was predominantly responsible for mediating the erythromycin resistance in these Enterococcus isolates. Moreover, the abundance of macrolide, lincosamide and streptogramin (MLS) resistant-related genes in the fecal samples from the heat-stressed group exhibited a significant elevation compared to the control group, primarily driven by changes in bacterial community composition, especially Enterococcaceae and Planococcaceae, and the transfer of mobile genetic elements (MGEs), particularly insertion elements. Collectively, these results highlight the role of environmental heat stress in promoting antibiotic resistance in Enterococcus isolates and partly explain the increasing prevalence of erythromycin-resistant Enterococcus isolates observed among animals in recent years.

OBJECTIVES: The inflammatory cascade and cell death post-myocardial ischemia reperfusion (MI/R) are very complex. Despite the understanding that macrophage inflammation has a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of MI/R, the contribution of macrophage inflammatory signals in tailoring the function of vascular endothelium remains unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present study, we analyzed the effects of NEDD4 on the NLRP3 inflammasome activation-mediated pyroptosis in vitro after an acute pro-inflammatory stimulus and in vivo in a MI/R mouse model. TTC and Evan's blue dye, Thioflavin S, immunohistochemistry staining, and ELISA were performed in wild-type and NEDD4 deficiency mice. THP-1 cells were transfected with si-NEDD4 or si-SF3A2. HEK293T cells were transfected with NEDD4 or SF3A2 overexpression plasmid. ELISA analyzed the inflammatory cytokines in the cell supernatant. The levels of NEDD4, SF3A2, and NLRP3/GSDMD pathway were determined by Western blot. Protein interactions were evaluated by immunoprecipitation. The protein colocalization in cells was monitored using a fluorescence microscope. RESULTS: NEDD4 inhibited NLRP3 inflammasome activation and pyroptosis in THP-1 cells treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and nigericin (Nig). Mechanistically, NEDD4 maintained the stability of NLRP3 through direct interaction with the SF3A2, whereas the latter association with NLRP3 indirectly interacted with NEDD4 promoting proteasomal degradation of NLRP3. Deletion of NLRP3 expression further inhibited the caspase cascade to induce pyroptosis. Interestingly, inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation in THP-1 cells could prevent cardiac microvascular endothelial cells (CMECs) injury. In addition, NEDD4 deficiency decreased animal survival and increased myocardial infarct size, no-reflow area, and promoted macrophages infiltration post-MI/R. CONCLUSIONS: NEDD4 could be a potential therapeutic target in microvascular injury following myocardial reperfusion. Video Abstract.

BACKGROUND: Ethanol infusion of the vein of Marshall (EI-VOM) has been widely used to facilitate mitral isthmus (MI) ablation. According to the literature, the success rate of achieving a bidirectional conduction block across the MI ranges from 51 to 96%, with no standardized strategy or method available for cardiac electrophysiologists. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to introduce and evaluate a novel ablation method of MI. METHODS: Consecutive patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (PeAF) that underwent catheter ablation were included. The MI ablation procedure followed a stepwise approach. In step 1, ethanol infusion of the vein of Marshall (EI-VOM) was performed. In step 2, a "V-shape" endocardial linear ablation connecting the left inferior pulmonary vein (LIPV) to mitral annulus (MA) was performed. In step 3, earliest activation sites(EASs) near the ablation line were identified using activation mapping followed by reinforced ablation. In step 4, precise epicardial ablation was performed, with the catheter introduced into the coronary sinus(CS) to target key ablation targets (KATs). RESULTS: 135 patients with PeAF underwent catheter ablation with the stepwise ablation method adopted in 119 cases. Bidirectional conduction blocks were achieved in 117 patients (98.3%). The block rates of every step were 0%, 58.0%, 44.0%, and 92.9%, and the cumulative block rates for the four steps were 0%, 58.0%, 76.5%, and 98.3%, respectively. No patient experienced fatal complications. CONCLUSIONS: Our novel stepwise catheter ablation method for MI yielded a high bidirectional block rate with high reproducibility.

BACKGROUNDS: Various family factors have been identified in association with school bullying and the involvement of children and adolescents in bullying behaviors. METHODS: A total of 11,919 participants (female = 6671, mean age = 15) from 22 middle schools in Suzhou City, China completed the questionnaire. The associations between structural family factors (family socio-economic status, living arrangement, number of siblings, whether they were local residents/migrants, had an urban/rural hukou [a household registration system in China], parental and maternal education levels, and other various bullying-related constructs (i.e. bullying witnessing, bullying involvement, bystander intervention, and fear of being bullied) were all examined. Odds ratios (ORs) adjusted for covariates were calculated for the four bullying-related constructs (bullying witness, bullying involvement, bystander intervention, and reactions to being bullied) using structural family factors. RESULTS: The result showed that all demographic household characteristics were associated with bullying at school except for being from a single-child family. Adolescents from rural families witnessed more bullying incidents than those from local families (OR = 1.35, 95% CI: [1.09, 1.68]). Adolescents who come from migrant families (OR = 1.12, 95% CI: [1.07, 1.43]) with a rural hukou (OR = 1.31, 95% CI: [1.00, 1.74]) and low parental education levels (OR = 1.42, 95% CI: [1.01, 2.57]) were more likely to be bullies. Adolescents who came from migrant families (OR = 1.37, 95% CI: [1.03, 1.82]), with low maternal education levels (OR = 1.42, 95% CI: [1.06, 1.91]) engaged in more negative bystander intervention behaviors. Furthermore, adolescents with less educated mothers experienced a higher fear of being bullied (never versus sometimes: OR = 1.33, 95% CI: [1.00, 1.85]; never versus usually OR = 1.39, 95% CI: [1.01, 1.20]). CONCLUSIONS: A systematic examination of the relationship between school bullying and demographic household characteristics may be used to inform school policies on bullying, such as training management on the importance of paying attention to adolescents from disadvantage household backgrounds. Identifying demographic factors that may predict bullying can also be used to prevent individuals from becoming involved in bullying and reduce the related negative consequences from being bullied.

Calcium deficiency usually causes accelerated quality deterioration in postharvest fruit, whereas the underlining mechanism is still unclear. Here, we report that calcium deficiency induced the development of bitter pit on the surface of apple peels compared with the healthy appearance in control apples during postharvest storage. Physiological analysis indicates that calcium-deficient peels contained higher levels of superoxide anion (O2•-), malondialdehyde (MDA), total phenol, flavonoid contents and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity, and reduced calcium, H2S production, anthocyanin, soluble protein content, and peroxidase (POD) activity compared with those in calcium-sufficient peels. The principal component analysis (PCA) results show that calcium content, ROS, and H2S production were the main factors between calcium-deficient and calcium-sufficient apple peels. Transcriptome data indicated that four calmodulin-like proteins (CMLs), seven AP2/ERFs, and three bHLHs transcripts were significantly differentially expressed in calcium-deficient apple peels. RT-qPCR and correlation analyses further revealed that CML5 expression was significantly positively correlated with the expression of ERF2/17, bHLH2, and H2S production related genes. In addition, transcriptional co-activation of CML5 by ERF2 and bHLH2 was demonstrated by apple transient expression assays and dual-luciferase reporter system experiments. Therefore, these findings provide a basis for studying the molecular mechanism of postharvest quality decline in calcium-deficient apples and the potential interaction between Ca2+ and endogenous H2S.

D-amino acid production from 2-keto acid by reductive amination is an attractive pathway because of its high yield and environmental safety. StDAPDH, a meso-diaminopimelate dehydrogenase (meso-DAPDH) from Symbiobacterium thermophilum, was the first meso-DAPDH to show amination of 2-keto acids. Furthermore, StDAPDH shows excellent thermostability compared to other meso-DAPDHs. However, the cofactor of StDAPDH is NADP(H), which is less common than NAD(H) in industrial applications. Therefore, cofactor engineering for StDAPDH is needed. In this study, the highly conserved cofactor binding sites around the adenosine moiety of NADPH were targeted to determine cofactor specificity. Lysine residues within a loop were found to be critical for the cofactor specificity of StDAPDH. Replacement of lysine with arginine resulted in the activity of pyruvic acid with NADH as the cofactor. The affinity of K159R to pyruvic acid was equal with NADH or NADPH as the cofactor, regardless of the mutation. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the large steric hindrance of arginine and the interaction of the salt bridge between NADH and arginine may have restricted the free movement of NADH, which prompted the formation of a stable active conformation of mutant K159R. These results provide further understanding of the catalytic mechanism of StDAPDH and guidance for the cofactor engineering of StDAPDH.

IL-33 is a new member of the IL-1 family cytokines, which is expressed by different types of immune cells and non-immune cells. IL-33 is constitutively expressed in the nucleus, where it can act as a transcriptional regulator. So far, no direct target for nuclear IL-33 has been identified, and the regulation of IL-33 nuclear function remains largely unclear. Here, we report that the transcription of type 2 inflammatory cytokine IL-13 is positively regulated by nuclear IL-33. IL-33 can directly bind to the conserved non-coding sequence (CNS) before the translation initiation site in the IL13 gene locus. Moreover, IL-33 nuclear function and stability are regulated by the enzyme ubiquitin-specific protease 17 (USP17) through deubiquitination of IL-33 both at the K48 and at the K63 sites. Our data suggest that IL13 gene transcription can be directly activated by nuclear IL-33, which is negatively regulated by the deubiquitinase USP17.

Low birth weight (LBW) impairs the development and health of livestock by affecting postnatal growth performance and metabolic health in adulthood. Previous studies on indigenous goats in southwest China showed that LBW goat kids had higher mortality and morbidity rates, including hepatic dyslipidemia and liver damage. However, the mechanism of insulin resistance affecting lipid metabolism under LBW conditions remains unclear. In this study, we conducted in vivo glucose-insulin metabolic studies, measured biochemical parameters, and analyzed related regulatory pathways. Both glucose tolerance tests and insulin tolerance tests indicated insulin resistance in LBW goat kids compared to controls (p < 0.05). The marker of insulin resistance, homeostasis model assessment (HOMA), was 2.85-fold higher in LBW than in control goats (p < 0.01). Additionally, elevated levels of free fatty acids in both plasma and skeletal muscle were observed in LBW goats compared to normal birth weight (NBW) goats (p < 0.05). Transcriptome analysis revealed impairments in lipid metabolism and insulin signaling in LBW goats. The observed lipid accumulation was associated with the upregulation of genes linked to fatty acid uptake and transport (FABP3), fatty acid oxidation (PPARA), triacylglycerol synthesis (LPIN1 and DGAT1), oxidative stress (ANKRD2), and insulin resistance (PGC1α). Furthermore, the insulin receptor substrate 2 (IRS2) was lower in the liver of LBW goat kids (p < 0.05). While there was no change in insulin function in skeletal muscle, LBW may lead to lipid accumulation in skeletal muscle by interfering with insulin function in the liver. These findings collectively impact the health and growth performance of livestock.

The precise features of lesions in non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) patients with total occlusion (TO) of the infarct-related artery (IRA) are still unclear. This study employs optical coherence tomography (OCT) to investigate pathological features in NSTEMI patients with or without IRA TO and explores the relationship between thrombus types and IRA occlusive status. This was a single-center retrospective study. A total of 202 patients diagnosed with NSTEMI were divided into two groups: those with Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) flow grade 0 before percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) (referred to as the TO group, n = 100) and those TIMI flow grade 1-3 (referred to as the Non-TO group, n = 102). Baseline characteristics, coronary angiography findings, and OCT results were collected. Multivariate logistic analysis identified factors influencing TO in NSTEMI. The category of NSTEMI was further subdivided based on the type of electrocardiogram (ECG) into two subgroups: ST segment unoffset myocardial infarction (STUMI) and ST segment depression myocardial infarction (STDMI). This division allows for a more specific classification of NSTEMI cases. The TO group had a younger age, higher male representation, more smokers, lower hypertension and cerebrovascular disease incidence, lower left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and higher creatine kinase myocardial band (CKMB) and creatine kinase (CK) peak levels. In the TO group, LCX served as the main IRA (52.0%), whereas in the Non-TO group, LAD was the predominant IRA (45.1%). Compared to the Non-TO group, OCT findings demonstrated that red thrombus/mixed thrombus was more common in the TO group, along with a lower occurrence of white thrombus (p < 0.001). The TO group exhibited a higher prevalence of STUMI (p = 0.001), whereas STDMI was more commonly observed in the Non-TO group (p = 0.001). NSTEMI presents as STUMI and STDMI distinct entities. Red thrombus/mixed thrombus in IRA often indicates occlusive lesions with STUMI on ECG. White thrombus suggests non-occlusive lesions with STDMI on ECG.

BACKGROUND: The cognitive impairment after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) has become a crucial clinical concern that cannot be ignored. However, studies on the early warning factors of cognitive impairment after PCI are still insufficient. METHODS: This study reviewed the postoperative cognitive function of 284 patients who underwent PCI in our hospital from June 2019 to June 2022. During the 21-day follow-up, all participants included in the analysis were divided into the cognitive impairment (CI) group (n = 82) and the noncognitive impairment (NCI) group (n = 186) according to their Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) scale. Participants' serum 25(OH)D3 levels on admission and serum neuron-specific enolase (NSE), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and S100ß levels were measured 21 days after surgery. RESULTS: Age more than 65 years, hypertension, operation time longer than 60 min, left ventricular ejection fraction less than 50% and serum 25(OH)D3 less than 31.41 ng/ml were the risk factors for cognitive dysfunction in ACS patients 21 days after PCI. Serum levels of 25(OH)D3, NSE, S100ß and GFAP were significantly higher in patients with cognitive impairment than in patients without cognitive impairment. CONCLUSION: Postoperative serum NSE, S100ß and GFAP levels were significantly negatively correlated with serum 25(OH)D3 levels at admission. The serum 25(OH)D3 level is a risk factor and predictor of cognitive impairment in patients with ACS after PCI.

Cognitive impairment in euthymic bipolar disorder (BD) contributes to poor functional outcomes. Resting-state magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)may help us understand the neurobiology of cognitive impairment in BD. Here, forty unmedicated euthymic BD patients and thirty-nine healthy controls were recruited, undergoing MRI scans and neuropsychological measures. The amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and ALFF-based functional connectivity (FC) analysis was employed to explore the potential alterations of neural activity. Voxel-wised correlation was calculated between clinical and cognitive variables and abnormal brain activity. Compared with healthy controls, euthymic BD patients showed worse cognitive performance in Trail Making Test, Digit Span Test, and Stroop Color-Word Test (SCWT). The euthymic BD group had significantly lower ALFF in the left medial frontal gyrus, right middle frontal gyrus, right postcentral gyrus, and left superior frontal gyrus. Furthermore, we found decreased ALFF values in the right middle frontal gyrus that was negatively correlated with cognitive inhibition, (r = -0.43, P = 0.015). ALFF-based FC analysis showed that BD group showed significantly decreased FC between the right middle frontal gyrus (seed) and left middle temporal gyrus and left medial frontal gyrus, (Two-tailed, PFWE < 0.05, TFCE corrected). The findings demonstrated that individuals with BD during the euthymic phase exhibited decreased ALFF and hypoconnectivity of key brain areas within the frontoparietal network. These altered spontaneous brain activity in euthymic BD patients may be involved in the pathophysiology mechanism of cognitive deficits.

Background: A few studies have focused on electrocardiography (ECG) parameters correlating with clinical prognosis in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) combined with new-onset right bundle branch block (RBBB). Objective: To assess the prognostic value of a new ECG parameter, namely, the ratio of QRS duration/RV6-V1 interval (QRS/RV6-V1), in patients with AMI combined with new-onset RBBB. Materials and methods: A total of 272 AMI patients combined with new-onset RBBB who received primary percutaneous coronary intervention (P-PCI) were retrospectively enrolled in the study. First, the patients were divided into survival group and non-survival group. Demographic, angiographic, and ECG characteristics were compared between the two groups. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to screen the best ECG parameter for predicting 1-year mortality. Second, the ratio of QRS/RV6-V1, a continuous variable, was converted to the high ratio group and low ratio group according to the optimal cutoff value point determined by the X-tile software. We compared the patient's demographic, angiographic, and ECG characteristics, in-hospital major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), and 1-year mortality between the two groups. Multivariate logistic and Cox regressions were used to evaluate whether the ratio of QRS/RV6-V1 was an independent prognostic factor of in-hospital MACE and 1-year mortality. Results: The ROC curve showed that the ratio of QRS/RV6-V1 had a higher value for predicting in-hospital MACE and 1-year mortality than the QRS duration, RV6-V1 interval, and RV1 interval. The patients in the high ratio group had significantly higher CK-MB peak and Killip class, lower ejection fraction (EF%), higher ratio of the left anterior (LAD) descending artery as infarct-related artery (IRA), and longer total ischemia time (TIT) than those in the low ratio group. The QRS duration was wider in the high ratio group than that in the low ratio group, whereas RV6-V1 was narrower in the high ratio group compared with that in the low ratio group. The in-hospital MACE rate (93.3% vs. 31.0%, p < 0.001) and 1-year mortality rate (86.7% vs. 13.2%, p < 0.001) in the high ratio group were higher than those in the low ratio group. The higher ratio of QRS/RV6-V1 was an independent predictor of in-hospital MACE (odds ratio, 8.55; 95% CI, 1.40-52.37; p = 0.02) after adjusting other confounders. Cox regression showed that the higher ratio of QRS/RV6-V1 predicted higher 1-year mortality of the patients with AMI combined with new-onset RBBB [hazard ratios (HR), 12.4; 95% CI, 7.26-21.22); p < 0.001] than the lower ratio of QRS/RV6-V1, and the HR still stayed at 2.21 even after a multivariable adjustment (HR, 2.21; 95% CI, 1.05-4.64); p = 0.037). Conclusion: According to the results of our study, the high ratio of QRS/RV6-V1 (>3.0) was a valuable predictor of short- and long-term adverse clinical outcomes in AMI patients combined with new-onset RBBB. The implications of the high ratio of QRS/RV6-V1 were severe ischemia and pseudo synchronization between bi-ventricle.

The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between morphological characteristics of culprit coronary plaques and thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) blood flow grade in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). According to the TIMI blood flow of the culprit vessel before percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), 222 patients with STEMI were divided into two groups: TIMI 0/1 group (n=164) and TIMI 2/3 group (n=58). The baseline characteristics, coronary angiographic findings and optical coherence tomography images were collected. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors independently associated with poor initial TIMI blood flow. Compared with TIMI 2/3 group, TIMI 0/1 group had a significantly smaller minimum lumen diameter, greater diameter stenosis and longer lesion length, a higher incidence of lipid plaque, larger lipid length, maximum lipid arc, lipid index and maximum cross-sectional area (CSA) of plaque rupture, as well as a higher prevalence of thin-cap fibroatheroma (TCFA) and healed plaque (P<0.05). Multivariate logistic analysis demonstrated that lipid plaque, lipid length, maximum lipid arc, lipid index, TCFA, maximum CSA of plaque rupture and healed plaque were significantly associated with poor initial TIMI blood flow (P<0.05). In conclusion, the present study revealed that the morphological characteristics of culprit coronary plaques (lipid plaque, lipid length, maximum lipid arc, lipid index, TCFA, maximum CSA of plaque rupture and healed plaque) are significantly associated with poor initial TIMI blood flow before PCI in patients with STEMI.

Nickel (Ni), as one of the essential micronutrients, exists widely in nature, but high concentration of Ni in soil can pose certain biological toxicity. Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) and rhamnolipid modified nZVI (RL@nZVI) can effectively stabilize Ni in soil. In this study, the stabilization effect of nZVI and RL@nZVI on the Ni-polluted soil under simulated acid rain and the microbial community response during the soil remediation under different Ni levels (200, 600, and 1800 mg/kg) were investigated. The results show that the addition of nZVI and RL@nZVI increased the pH of leachate to neutral and decreased the amount of Ni in leachate (23.33%-47.06% by nZVI and 50.01%-70.47% by RL@nZVI), indicating that nZVI and RL@nZVI could reduce the potential radial migration risk of Ni in soil under simulated acid rain. The addition of RL@nZVI was beneficial to recover the soil bacterial community diversity, which was inhibited by Ni pollution, and rhamnolipid coating could reduce the toxicity of nZVI. The dominant bacteria in RL@nZVI-treated soil with low, medium, and high Ni pollution were Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria, respectively. Soil potential, total organic carbon, and pH were the main driving factors affecting the bacterial community structure, while Ni stress only caused changes in the relative abundance of some tolerant bacteria.

Magnesium-aluminum modified biochar (MABs) has an outstanding effect on the simultaneous immobilization of arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) in soil, but the stability of remediation effect of MAB under various natural conditions is still unknown. In this study, we investigated the effects of organic acids, dry-wet cycles (DW), freeze-thaw cycles (FT), and rainfall (pH 4, 7, and 8) on the immobilization of As, Pb, and Cd by MAB. The results showed that oxalic acid decreased the immobilization efficiencies of As, Pb, and Cd by 15.5%-38.5%; meanwhile, humic acid reduced the immobilization efficiency of Pb by 89.7%, but elevated that of Cd by 19.5%. The immobilization mechanisms of MAB-5 on three metals were mainly involved in ion exchange and surface-complexation. Compared with the 7th round, the immobilization efficiencies of As, Pb, and Cd by MAB in the 28th round was decreased by 17%-28% in DW, but was increased by 11%-18% in FT. In addition, MAB was transformed into hydrotalcite after FT and DW. After experiencing simulated rainfall, MAB caused more As, Pb, and Cd to be retained in the upper soil layer, and the immobilization effect of MBA was more significant under the stimulated rainfall with higher pH. The study provides a more theoretical basis for the application of MAB in the actual site remediation.

Sulfidation effectively improves the electron transfer efficiency of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI), but decreases the specific surface area of nZVI. In this study, sulfidated nZVI (S-nZVI) coated with rhamnolipid (RL-S-nZVI) was synthesized and used to stabilize Pb, Cd, and As in combined polluted soil. The stabilization efficiency of 0.3% (wt) RL-S-nZVI to water soluble Pb, Cd, and As in soil reached 88.76%, 72%, and 63%, respectively. Rhamnolipid coating inhibited the reduction of specific surface area and successfully encapsulated nZVI, thus reducing the oxidation of Fe0. The types of iron oxides in RL-S-nZVI were reduced compared to S-nZVI, but the content and strength of Fe0 iron were obviously enhanced. Furthermore, rhamnolipid functional groups (-COOH and -COO-) were also involved in the stabilization process. In addition, the stabilization efficiency of RL-S-nZVI to the bioavailable Pb, Cd, and As in soil increased by 41%, 41%, and 50%, respectively, compared with nZVI. The presence of organic acids, especially citric acid, improved the stabilization efficiency of RL-S-nZVI to the three metals. The result of BCR sequential extraction indicated that RL-S-nZVI increased the residual state of Pb, Cd, and As and reduced the acid-soluble and reducible state after 28 days of soil incubation. XRD and XPS analyses showed that the stabilization mechanisms of RL-S-nZVI on heavy metals involved in ion exchange, surface complexation, adsorption, co-precipitation, chemisorption, and redox.

Tin-based anode materials with high theoretical specific capacity are subject to huge volume expansion and poor reaction reversibility, leading to degradation of battery performance. Herein, the steric-hindrance effect and self-sacrificing template behavior of polydopamine were firstly developed to induce the formation of hollow nanospheres assembled by ultrafine SnO2 quantum dots (SnO2-QDs) and nitrogen-doped carbon (NC), containing residual polydopamine (PDA) cores. The PDA@SnO2-QDs/NC hollow nanospheres could effectively accommodate the volume expansion and maintain structural stability. More importantly, the PDA core could capture oxygen free radicals produced by the charge/discharge process and be involved in the evolution of the SEI layer, achieving enhanced electrochemical reaction kinetics. The optimized PDA@SnO2-QDs/NC anode shows a specific capacity of 898 mAh g-1 after 300 cycles at 0.3 A g-1, and scarcely capacity attenuation after 1500 cycles at 1 A g-1. The long-cyclic life is up to 3000 cycles at 3 A g-1. Even after 200 cycles, the anode in the PDA@SnO2-QDs/NC||LFP full battery gives a reversible capacity of 489 mAh g-1 at 0.3 A g-1, with a capacity retention of 77 %. This work casts new light on tin-based anode materials and interface optimization.

Infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria are becoming increasingly serious. The aminoglycoside antibiotics have been widely used to treat severe Gram-negative bacterial infections. Here, we reported that a class of small molecules, namely, halogenated indoles, can resensitize Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 to aminoglycoside antibiotics such as gentamicin, kanamycin, tobramycin, amikacin, neomycin, ribosomalin sulfate, and cisomicin. We selected 4F-indole as a representative of halogenated indoles to investigate its mechanism and found that the two-component system (TCS) PmrA/PmrB inhibited the expression of multidrug efflux pump MexXY-OprM, allowing kanamycin to act intracellularly. Moreover, 4F-indole inhibited the biosynthesis of several virulence factors, such as pyocyanin, type III secretion system (T3SS), and type VI secretion system (T6SS) exported effectors, and reduced the swimming and twitching motility by suppressing the expression of flagella and type IV pili. This study suggests that the combination of 4F-indole and kanamycin can be more effective against P. aeruginosa PAO1 and affect its multiple physiological activities, providing a novel insight into the reactivation of aminoglycoside antibiotics. IMPORTANCE Infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa have become a major public health crisis. Its resistance to existing antibiotics causes clinical infections that are hard to cure. In this study, we found that halogenated indoles in combination with aminoglycoside antibiotics could be more effective than antibiotics alone against P. aeruginosa PAO1 and preliminarily revealed the mechanism of the 4F-indole-induced regulatory effect. Moreover, the regulatory effect of 4F-indole on different physiological behaviors of P. aeruginosa PAO1 was analyzed by combined transcriptomics and metabolomics. We explain that 4F-indole has potential as a novel antibiotic adjuvant, thus slowing down the further development of bacterial resistance.
