PURPOSE: Nutrition is essential within cancer care, yet patient and carer access to nutrition care and information is variable. This study aimed to (1) investigate patient and carer access and perceptions, and health professional views and practices, relating to cancer nutrition information and care; and (2) co-design interactive resources to support optimal nutrition care. METHODS: Patients and carers completed a survey regarding access to nutrition care and information. Seven multidisciplinary health service teams were invited to participate in a survey and focus group to assess barriers and enablers in nutrition practices. Focus groups were recorded, transcribed and thematically analyzed. Eligible patients, carers, and health professionals were invited to four virtual workshops utilizing experience-based co-design methods to identify nutrition priority areas and design resources. Workshop participant acceptability of the resources was measured. RESULTS: Of 104 consumer survey respondents (n = 97 patients, n = 7 carers), 61% agreed that it "took too much time to find evidence-based nutrition and cancer information", and 46% had seen a dietitian. Thirty-four of 38 health professionals completed the survey and 30 participated in a focus group, and it was identified the greatest barriers to delivering nutrition care were lack of referral services, knowledge or skill gaps, and time. Twenty participants (n = 10 patients and carers, n = 10 health professionals) attended four workshops and co-designed a suite of 46 novel resources rated as highly acceptable. CONCLUSION: Improved communication, training, and availability of suitable resources could improve access to and support cancer nutrition information and care. New, co-designed cancer nutrition resources were created and deemed highly acceptable to patients, carers, and health professionals.

Passalora sequoiae is a foliar pathogen to conifer tree species. In this study, we conducted whole-genome and transcriptome analyses on isolates of P. sequoiae collected from symptomatic Leyland cypress leaves from a Christmas tree farm in Mississippi. The objectives for this research were to elucidate the pathogenicity mechanisms of P. sequoiae by characterizing the genome and transcriptome and possibly identify unique and shared predicted genes in comparison with non-conifer/canker and foliar pathogens in the family Mycosphaerellaceae. P. sequoiae was found to be similar to other foliar Mycosphaerellaceae pathogens and likely represents a hemibiotrophic lifestyle based on comparisons across pathogens. The genome and in planta transcriptome highlighted some unique features of P. sequoiae: the significant presence of chitin synthases and fructose-degrading carbohydrate-degrading enzymes, trans-AT PKS genes, and antibiotic gene clusters that were unique to P. sequoiae compared with the other Mycosphaerellaceae species genomes. Several transcripts that were highly expressed in planta were identified as effectors, yet the functions were not characterized. These targets provide ample resources to continue to characterize pathogen-conifer host interactions in conifer foliar pathogens. Furthermore, this research helps build genomic resources for an important plant pathogen on Leyland cypress that will further our ability to develop novel management practices that could begin with breeding for resistance.

Brown root rot disease (BRRD) is a highly destructive tree disease. Early diagnosis of BRRD has been challenging because the first symptoms and signs are often observed after extensive tissue colonization. Existing molecular detection methods, all based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, were developed without testing against global Phellinus noxius isolates, other wood-decay fungi, or host plant tissues. This study aimed to develop SYBR Green real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays for P. noxius. The primer pair Pn_ITS_F/Pn_ITS_R targets the ITS, and the primer pair Pn_NLR_F/Pn_NLR_R targets a P. noxius-unique group of homologous genes identified through a comparative genomics analysis. The homologous genes belong to the nucleotide-binding-oligomerization-domain-like receptor (NLR) superfamily. The new primer pairs and a previous primer pair G1F/G1R were optimized for qPCR conditions and tested for specificity using 61 global P. noxius isolates, 5 other Phellinus species, and 22 non-Phellinus wood-decay fungal species. Although all three primer pairs could detect as little as 100 fg (approximately 2.99 copies) of P. noxius genomic DNA, G1F/G1R had the highest specificity and Pn_NLR_F/Pn_NLR_R had the highest efficiency. To avoid false positives, the cutoff quantification cycle values were determined as 34 for G1F/G1R, 29 for Pn_ITS_F/Pn_ITS_R, and 32 for Pn_NLR_F/Pn_NLR_R. We further validated these qPCR assays using Ficus benjamina seedlings artificially inoculated with P. noxius, six tree species naturally infected by P. noxius, rhizosphere soil, and bulk soil. The newly developed qPCR assays provide sensitive detection and quantification of P. noxius, which is useful for long-term monitoring of BRRD status.
RESUMO
To better understand functional ecology of bark beetle-microbial symbioses, we characterized yeast associates of North American spruce beetle (Dendroctous rufipennis Kirby) across populations. Seven yeast species were detected; Wickerhamomyces canadensis (Wickerham) Kurtzman et al. (Sachharomycetales: Saccharomycetaceae) was the most common (74% of isolates) and found in all populations. Isolates of W. canadensis were subsequently tested for competitive interactions with symbiotic (Leptographium abietinum, = Grosmannia abietina) and pathogenic (Beauvaria bassiana) filamentous fungi, and isolates were nutritionally profiled (protein and P content). Exposure to yeast headspace emissions had isolate-dependent effects on colony growth of symbiotic and pathogenic fungi; most isolates of W. canadensis slightly inhibited growth rates of symbiotic (L. abietinum, mean effect: - 4%) and entomopathogenic (B. bassiana, mean effect: - 6%) fungi. However, overall variation was high (range: - 35.4 to + 88.6%) and some yeasts enhanced growth of filamentous fungi whereas others were consistently inhibitory. The volatile 2-phenylethanol was produced by W. canadensis and synthetic 2-phenylethanol reduced growth rates of both L. abietinum and B. bassiana by 36% on average. Mean protein and P content of Wickerhamomyces canadensis cultures were 0.8% and 7.2%, respectively, but isolates varied in nutritional content and protein content was similar to that of host tree phloem. We conclude that W. canadensis is a primary yeast symbiont of D. rufipennis in the Rocky Mountains and emits volatiles that can affect growth of associated microbes. Wickerhamomyces canadensis isolates vary substantially in limiting nutrients (protein and P), but concentrations are less than reported for the symbiotic filamentous fungus L. abietinum.

Armillaria species show considerable variation in ecological roles and virulence, from mycorrhizae and saprophytes to important root pathogens of trees and horticultural crops. We studied two Armillaria species that can be found in coniferous forests of northwestern USA and southwestern Canada. Armillaria altimontana not only is considered as a weak, opportunistic pathogen of coniferous trees, but it also appears to exhibit in situ biological control against A. solidipes, formerly North American A. ostoyae, which is considered a virulent pathogen of coniferous trees. Here, we describe their genome assemblies and present a functional annotation of the predicted genes and proteins for the two Armillaria species that exhibit contrasting ecological roles. In addition, the soil microbial communities were examined in association with the two Armillaria species within a 45-year-old plantation of western white pine (Pinus monticola) in northern Idaho, USA, where A. altimontana was associated with improved tree growth and survival, while A. solidipes was associated with reduced growth and survival. The results from this study reveal a high similarity between the genomes of the beneficial/non-pathogenic A. altimontana and pathogenic A. solidipes; however, many relatively small differences in gene content were identified that could contribute to differences in ecological lifestyles and interactions with woody hosts and soil microbial communities.

PURPOSE: Limited practical resources exist to guide optimal nutrition care for patients, carers, and health professionals (HPs). This study aimed to co-design a cancer nutrition care pathway to guide and improve the provision of consistent, evidence-based care with consumers and HPs. METHODS: This study utilised an experienced-based co-design (EBCD) approach over five stages. Stage 1 involved stakeholder engagement and a literature review. Stage 2 included a survey and focus groups with patients/carers. Co-design workshops were conducted within stage 3, key stakeholder consultation within stage 4, and the finalisation and dissemination of the cancer nutrition care pathway formed stage 5. Results of stages 3 to 5 are the focus of this paper. RESULTS: Two co-design workshops were held with patients, carers, and HPs (n = 32 workshop 1; n = 32 workshop 2), who collectively agreed on areas of focus and key priorities. Following this, a consultation period was completed with patients, carers, and HPs (n = 45) to refine the pathway. The collective outcome of all study stages was the co-design of a cancer nutrition care pathway (the CanEAT pathway) defining optimal cancer nutrition care that combines evidence-based practice tips into a centralised suite of resources, tools, and clinical guidance. CONCLUSION: The CanEAT pathway was co-designed by patients, carers, and HPs. The EBCD approach is a meaningful way to develop targeted improvements in cancer care. The CanEAT pathway is freely available to guide and support patients, carers, and HPs to aid the implementation of optimal nutrition care into clinical practice.

Brown root rot disease (BRRD), caused by Phellinus noxius, is an important tree disease in tropical and subtropical areas. To improve chemical control of BRRD and deter emergence of fungicide resistance in P. noxius, this study investigated control efficacies and systemic activities of fungicides with different modes of action. Fourteen fungicides with 11 different modes of action were tested for inhibitory effects in vitro on 39 P. noxius isolates from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia, and Pacific Islands. Cyproconazole, epoxiconazole, and tebuconazole (Fungicide Resistance Action Committee [FRAC] 3, target-site G1) inhibited colony growth of P. noxius by 99.9 to 100% at 10 ppm and 97.7 to 99.8% at 1 ppm. The other effective fungicide was cyprodinil + fludioxonil (FRAC 9 + 12, target-site D1 + E2), which showed growth inhibition of 96.9% at 10 ppm and 88.6% at 1 ppm. Acropetal translocation of six selected fungicides was evaluated in bishop wood (Bischofia javanica) seedlings by immersion of the root tips in each fungicide at 100 ppm, followed by liquid or gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry analyses of consecutive segments of root, stem, and leaf tissues at 7 and 21 days posttreatment. Bidirectional translocation of the fungicides was also evaluated by stem injection of fungicide stock solutions. Cyproconazole and tebuconazole were the most readily absorbed by roots and efficiently transported acropetally. Greenhouse experiments suggested that cyproconazole, tebuconazole, and epoxiconazole have a slightly higher potential for controlling BRRD than mepronil, prochloraz, and cyprodinil + fludioxonil. Because all tested fungicides lacked basipetal translocation, soil drenching should be considered instead of trunk injection for their use in BRRD control.

Emerging plant pathogens have been increasing exponentially over the last century. To address this issue, it is critical to determine whether these pathogens are native to ecosystems or have been recently introduced. Understanding the ecological and evolutionary processes fostering emergence can help to manage their spread and predict epidemics/epiphytotics. Using restriction site-associated DNA sequencing data, we studied genetic relationships, pathways of spread and the evolutionary history of Phellinus noxius, an emerging root-rotting fungus of unknown origin, in eastern Asia, Australia and the Pacific Islands. We analysed patterns of genetic variation using Bayesian inference, maximum-likelihood phylogeny, population splits and mixtures measuring correlations in allele frequencies and genetic drift, and finally applied coalescent-based theory using Approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) with supervised machine learning. Population structure analyses revealed five genetic groups with signatures of complex recent and ancient migration histories. The most probable scenario of ancient pathogen spread is movement from an unsampled population to Malaysia and the Pacific Islands, with subsequent spread to Taiwan and Australia. Furthermore, ABC analyses indicate P. noxius spread occurred thousands of generations ago, contradicting previous assumptions that this pathogen was recently introduced to multiple geographical regions. Our results suggest that recent emergence of P. noxius in eastern Asia, Australia and the Pacific Islands has probably been driven by anthropogenic and natural disturbances, such as deforestation, land-use change, severe weather events and/or introduction of exotic plants. This study provides a novel example of applying genome-wide allele frequency data to unravel the dynamics of pathogen emergence under changing ecosystem conditions.

RESEARCH QUESTION: What temperature fluctuations are oocytes exposed to during oocyte retrieval? Can an alternative method of oocyte retrieval be designed to minimize these fluctuations? DESIGN: Mock oocyte retrieval procedures were performed to investigate the change in temperature when the follicular fluid is drained into collection tubes and when the fluid is subsequently poured into dishes to allow identification of the cumulus-oocyte complex (COC). A new device, the Eggcell, has been designed that addresses the problem of these temperature fluctuations. To confirm its safety and demonstrate the clinical applicability of Eggcell, laboratory validation was performed prior to use with human participants (n = 15). RESULTS: Eggcell meets its design specification to provide temperature stability within the physiological range for aspirated follicular fluid. The COC can be successfully retained within the chamber (n = 180) without evidence of loss or damage to the oocytes or compromise of fertilization rate, blastocyst development or clinical outcome. CONCLUSIONS: This study has demonstrated the successful first stages of development of a new medical device. Further studies are needed for comparative evaluation of clinical outcome with standard technology.

Cytospora canker is one of the most important diseases affecting peach production in Colorado, yet previous efforts to characterize Cytospora species diversity in Colorado have relied exclusively on morphological traits. Recently, several new Cytospora species were described from peach orchards within the United States using molecular and morphological data, prompting the need to reexamine Cytospora spp. present on peach trees in Colorado. A total of 137 isolates of Cytospora spp. were collected from eight orchards in western Colorado. Isolates were sequenced at the internal transcribed spacer region and elongation factor 1-α and assessed with reference sequences in phylogenetic analyses. All isolates from western Colorado peach trees resolved with the newly described Cytospora plurivora. In addition to molecular characterization, temperature growth and virulence assays were conducted to assess phenotypic variation among the isolates from western Colorado. Variation across isolates was found both in growth at different temperatures and in virulence. Ancestral state reconstruction analyses resolved the most virulent (and most often collected) haplotypes together in a well-supported clade from which a single monophyletic origin of high virulence can be inferred. Finally, a droplet digital PCR assay was developed for use in ongoing and future studies to detect and quantify C. plurivora from field and laboratory samples.

PURPOSE: Evidence-based guidelines exist to guide health professionals and services about cancer nutrition care; however, the views of cancer patients and carers are not well understood. This study aimed to understand the experience and needs of cancer patients and carers regarding nutrition care across the care continuum. METHODS: Using a mixed-methods approach, cancer patients and carers completed a cross-sectional online survey and focus groups. Participants were recruited through health services and cancer organisation consumer networks via email distribution lists, e-newsletters, and social media. Focus groups were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analysed using content analysis. RESULTS: Of 165 survey respondents, only 51% (n=84) reported they talked to a health professional about their nutrition care at any time-point, and only 32% with a dietitian. The majority (84%) of patients and carers felt nutrition was important at one or more time-points in their cancer path, indicating during and after cancer treatment the most important. However, perceived support from health professionals for nutrition care was deemed low at all time-points. Five focus groups were held (n=20; 16 patients, 2 carers, 2 both patients/carers) and five themes emerged: nutrition information, experiences and need; control over diet and nutrition; importance and value of nutrition; access to support; what optimal nutrition care looks like. CONCLUSION: Patients and carers felt nutrition was important during their cancer path, but perceived support from health professionals for nutrition care was low. This study has highlighted patient and carer nutrition experiences that will inform development of a co-designed optimal cancer nutrition care pathway.

BACKGROUND: Development and application of DNA-based methods to distinguish highly virulent isolates of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. koae [Fo koae; cause of koa wilt disease on Acacia koa (koa)] will help disease management through early detection, enhanced monitoring, and improved disease resistance-breeding programs. RESULTS: This study presents whole genome analyses of one highly virulent Fo koae isolate and one non-pathogenic F. oxysporum (Fo) isolate. These analyses allowed for the identification of putative lineage-specific DNA and predicted genes necessary for disease development on koa. Using putative chromosomes and predicted gene comparisons, Fo koae-exclusive, virulence genes were identified. The putative lineage-specific DNA included identified genes encoding products secreted in xylem (e. g., SIX1 and SIX6) that may be necessary for disease development on koa. Unique genes from Fo koae were used to develop pathogen-specific PCR primers. These diagnostic primers allowed target amplification in the characterized highly virulent Fo koae isolates but did not allow product amplification in low-virulence or non-pathogenic isolates of Fo. Thus, primers developed in this study will be useful for early detection and monitoring of highly virulent strains of Fo koae. Isolate verification is also important for disease resistance-breeding programs that require a diverse set of highly virulent Fo koae isolates for their disease-screening assays to develop disease-resistant koa. CONCLUSIONS: These results provide the framework for understanding the pathogen genes necessary for koa wilt disease and the genetic variation of Fo koae populations across the Hawaiian Islands.

Raffaelea lauricola is an invasive fungal pathogen and symbiont of the redbay ambrosia beetle (Xyleborus glabratus) that has caused widespread mortality to redbay (Persea borbonia) and other Lauraceae species in the southeastern USA. We compare two genomes of R. lauricola (C2646 and RL570) to seven other related Ophiostomatales species including R. aguacate (nonpathogenic close relative of R. lauricola), R. quercus-mongolicae (associated with mortality of oaks in Korea), R. quercivora (associated with mortality of oaks in Japan), Grosmannia clavigera (cause of blue stain in conifers), Ophiostoma novo-ulmi (extremely virulent causal agent of Dutch elm disease), O. ulmi (moderately virulent pathogen that cause of Dutch elm disease), and O. piceae (blue-stain saprophyte of conifer logs and lumber). Structural and functional annotations were performed to determine genes that are potentially associated with disease development. Raffaelea lauricola and R. aguacate had the largest genomes, along with the largest number of protein-coding genes, genes encoding secreted proteins, small-secreted proteins, ABC transporters, cytochrome P450 enzymes, CAZYmes, and proteases. Our results indicate that this large genome size was not related to pathogenicity but was likely lineage specific, as the other pathogens in Raffaelea (R. quercus-mongolicae and R. quercivora) had similar genome characteristics to the Ophiostoma species. A diverse repertoire of wood-decaying enzymes were identified in each of the genomes, likely used for toxin neutralization rather than wood degradation. Lastly, a larger number of species-specific, secondary metabolite, synthesis clusters were identified in R. lauricola suggesting that it is well equipped as a pathogen, which could explain its success as a pathogen of a wide range of lauraceous hosts.

A modified Delphi methodology was used to develop a consensus regarding a series of learning outcome statements to act as the foundation of an undergraduate medical core embryology syllabus. A Delphi panel was formed by recruiting stakeholders with experience in leading undergraduate teaching of medical students. The panel (n = 18), including anatomists, embryologists and practising clinicians, were nominated by members of Council and/or the Education Committee of the Anatomical Society. Following development of an a priori set of learning outcome statements (n = 62) by the authors, panel members were asked in the first of a two-stage process to 'accept', 'reject' or 'modify' each learning outcome, to propose additional outcomes if desired. In the second stage, the panel was asked to either accept or reject 16 statements which had either been modified, or had failed to reach consensus, during the first Delphi round. Overall, 61 of 62 learning outcome statements, each linked to examples of clinical conditions to provide context, achieved an 80% level of agreement following the modified Delphi process and were therefore deemed accepted for inclusion within the syllabus. The proposed syllabus allows for flexibility within individual curricula, while still prioritising and focusing on the core level of knowledge of embryological processes by presenting the essential elements to all newly qualified doctors, regardless of their subsequent chosen specialty.

RESEARCH QUESTION: The current study aimed to assess knowledge, attitudes and intentions in relation to fertility preservation among children, by proxy, and adolescents with cancer. Although fertility preservation options have been developed to mitigate the adverse long-term effects of life-saving cancer treatment on fertility, fertility is difficult for children and adolescents to conceptualize, especially when they face a cancer diagnosis. DESIGN: This was a descriptive, semi-quantitative analysis. Adolescents and parents of children or adolescents within 6 months of a cancer diagnosis and undergoing gonadotoxic treatment were invited to participate. Seventy-one families completed and returned the study's questionnaire (91 questionnaires) over a period of 26 months. RESULTS: The vast majority of participants were aware of the gonadotoxic effects of cancer treatment (85%) and had positive attitudes towards fertility preservation (>90%), but only a portion of them (20%) were willing to take action towards this goal. Although adolescent-parent pairs had similar attitudes towards fertility preservation, adolescents tended to be more sceptical about experimental fertility preservation options. Male post-pubertal cancer patients were more likely to be offered fertility preservation counselling or referral to a specialist in comparison to their younger and female counterparts. CONCLUSIONS: Fertility preservation care has advanced but there are still gender and age differences in counselling and treatment initiation in the paediatric and adolescent cancer population. Interventions to improve provider-patient-parent communication regarding fertility preservation and to help patients address the observed intention-behaviour gap in relation to fertility preservation options are needed.

CONTEXT: Good judgement and the ability to make complex decisions are key attributes of a skilled professional. There has been limited study of doctors and their decision making, particularly in relation to making complex decisions. The study aims were to understand how trainee doctors develop practical wisdom through investigating their approach to difficult decision making, understanding the influences on the development of practical wisdom, and identifying potential interventions that may help develop this further. METHODS: Constructing an understanding of the process of developing practical wisdom was analysed within a social constructivist frame. The study investigated trainee doctors at different stages of their careers. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were used to explore the approaches doctors take to difficult decision making, as well as the key training influences in learning these skills. Constant comparative analysis was carried out within a grounded theory approach. RESULTS: Key elements emerged from the data regarding the doctors themselves and the environments they worked in that assisted in developing decision making. This led to the construction of a conceptual model setting out the development of practical wisdom among trainee doctors. The model describes a process of gaining experience in decision making, moderated by key external and internal influences. The important roles of self-efficacy and agency (relational) are highlighted as key enablers of the process. DISCUSSION: The implications of this model are considered in relation to postgraduate training of doctors. The importance of training doctors to be self-regulated learners in learning environments that support their development is highlighted. Aspects of the clinical learning environment (structure) such as rotation structures, the culture, supervision and feedback can all be enhanced. Self-efficacy and relational agency, alongside other internal influences, are key factors in accelerating development of practical wisdom. Other studies have shown that these factors can be improved with targeted interventions.

An omnibus spending bill in 2014 directed the Department of Energy to analyze how effectively Department of Energy (DOE) identifies, programs, and executes its plans to address public health and safety risks that remain as part of DOE's remaining environmental cleanup liabilities. A committee identified two dozen issues and associated recommendations for the DOE, other federal agencies, and the U.S. Congress to consider, as well as other stakeholders such as states and tribal nations. In regard to risk assessment, the committee described a risk review process that uses available data, expert experience, identifies major data gaps, permits input from key stakeholders, and creates an ordered set of risks based on what is known. Probabilistic risk assessments could be a follow-up from these risk reviews. In regard to risk management, the states, in particular, have become major drivers of how resources are driven. States use different laws, different priorities, and challenge DOE's policies in different ways. Land use decisions vary, technology choices are different, and other notable variations are apparent. The cost differences associated with these differences are marked. The net result is that resources do not necessarily go to the most prominent human health and safety risks, as seen from the national level.

The focus of investigation in this study was to consider the potential of arthropods in the dissemination of the bacterium involved in drippy blight disease, Lonsdalea quercina. Arthropod specimens were collected and tested for the presence of the bacterium with molecular markers. The bacterium L. quercina was confirmed on 12 different insect samples from three orders (Coleoptera, Hemiptera, and Hymenoptera) and eight families (Buprestidae, Coccinellidae, Dermestidae, Coreidae, Pentatomidae and/or Miridae, Apidae, Formicidae, and Vespidae). Approximately half of the insects found to carry the bacterium were in the order Hymenoptera. Estimates of the insects that are contaminated with the bacterium, and likely carry it between trees, is conservative because the documented insects represent only a subset of the insect orders that were observed feeding on the bacterium or present on diseased trees yet were not able to be tested. The insects contaminated with L. quercina exhibited diverse life histories, where some had a facultative relationship with the bacterium and others sought it out as a food source. These findings demonstrate that a diverse set of insects naturally occur on diseased trees and may disseminate L. quercina.

BACKGROUND: Progesterone is essential for the maintenance of pregnancy. However, whether progesterone supplementation in the first trimester of pregnancy would increase the rate of live births among women with a history of unexplained recurrent miscarriages is uncertain. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial to investigate whether treatment with progesterone would increase the rates of live births and newborn survival among women with unexplained recurrent miscarriage. We randomly assigned women with recurrent miscarriages to receive twice-daily vaginal suppositories containing either 400 mg of micronized progesterone or matched placebo from a time soon after a positive urinary pregnancy test (and no later than 6 weeks of gestation) through 12 weeks of gestation. The primary outcome was live birth after 24 weeks of gestation. RESULTS: A total of 1568 women were assessed for eligibility, and 836 of these women who conceived naturally within 1 year and remained willing to participate in the trial were randomly assigned to receive either progesterone (404 women) or placebo (432 women). The follow-up rate for the primary outcome was 98.8% (826 of 836 women). In an intention-to-treat analysis, the rate of live births was 65.8% (262 of 398 women) in the progesterone group and 63.3% (271 of 428 women) in the placebo group (relative rate, 1.04; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.94 to 1.15; rate difference, 2.5 percentage points; 95% CI, -4.0 to 9.0). There were no significant between-group differences in the rate of adverse events. CONCLUSIONS: Progesterone therapy in the first trimester of pregnancy did not result in a significantly higher rate of live births among women with a history of unexplained recurrent miscarriages. The Anatomical Society has developed a series of learning outcomes that 'experts' within the field would recommend as core knowledge outputs for a Master's Degree Programme in Pharmacy (MPharm) within the UK. Using the Anatomical Society core gross anatomy syllabus for medical anatomy as a foundation, a modified Delphi technique was used to develop outcomes specific to pharmacy graduates. A Delphi panel consisting of medical practitioners, pharmacists and anatomists (n = 39) was created and involved 'experts' representing 20 UK Higher Education Institutions. The output from this study was 49 pharmacy-specific learning outcomes that are applicable to all pharmacy programmes. The new MPharm anatomy syllabus offers a basic anatomical framework upon which pharmacy educators can build the necessary clinical practice and knowledge. These learning outcomes could be used to develop anatomy teaching within an integrated curriculum as per requirements of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
