Pregnancy and pregnancy loss may be associated with increased risk of diabetes in later life. However, the evidence is inconsistent and sparse, especially among East Asians where reproductive patterns differ importantly from those in the West. We examined the associations of pregnancy and pregnancy loss (miscarriage, induced abortion, and still birth) with the risk of incident diabetes in later life among Chinese women. In 2004-2008, the nationwide China Kadoorie Biobank recruited 302 669 women aged 30-79 years from 10 (5 urban, 5 rural) diverse localities. During 9.2 years of follow-up, 7780 incident cases of diabetes were recorded among 273,383 women without prior diabetes and cardiovascular disease at baseline. Cox regression yielded multiple-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for the risk of diabetes associated with pregnancy and pregnancy loss. Overall, 99% of women had been pregnant, of whom 10%, 53%, and 6% reported having a history of miscarriage, induced abortion, and stillbirth, respectively. Among ever pregnant women, each additional pregnancy was associated with an adjusted HR of 1.04 (95% CI 1.03; 1.06) for diabetes. Compared with those without pregnancy loss, women with a history of pregnancy loss had an adjusted HR of 1.07 (1.02; 1.13) and the HRs increased with increasing number of pregnancy losses, irrespective of the number of livebirths; the adjusted HR was 1.03 (1.00; 1.05) for each additional pregnancy loss. The strength of the relationships differed marginally by type of pregnancy loss. Among Chinese women, a higher number of pregnancies and pregnancy losses were associated with a greater risk of diabetes.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Season of birth as a surrogate for potential environmental exposure during fetal development and early postnatal life has shown an inconsistent association with adult type 2 diabetes in white populations living in high-latitude regions. The present study aimed to examine the association between birth seasonality and risk of adult type 2 diabetes in Chinese individuals living across wide regions of low latitude and lower to middle latitude. METHODS: Participants from the China Kadoorie Biobank were enrolled during 2004-2008 and followed up until 31 December 2013. After excluding participants with cancer, heart disease, stroke and diabetes at baseline, the present study included 189,153 men and 272,058 women aged 30-79 years. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards model to estimate the HR and 95% CI. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 7.2 years (3.3 million person-years), we documented 8784 incident cases of type 2 diabetes. In the whole cohort, compared with summer-born participants, the adjusted HRs (95% CIs) were 1.09 (1.02, 1.16), 1.08 (1.02, 1.15) and 1.09 (1.02, 1.15) for those who were born in Spring, Autumn and Winter, respectively. The association was consistent in both men and women and across subgroups defined by residence and lifestyle factors later in life. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: In this large prospective study, participants born in summer had a lower risk of adult type 2 diabetes compared with other seasons of birth, suggesting exposures in early life with some degree of seasonal variation might influence the risk of adult diabetes.

Film covers have been widely applied worldwide. However, the effects of long-term plastic film mulching use on heavy metal (HM) activity in soil remain unclear. This study focused on farmland in the upstream part of the Pearl River in China and collected 103 soil samples after 2, 5, and 15 years of plastic film mulching. The main environmental factors controlling microplastics (MPs), plasticizer phthalic acid esters (PAEs), HM pollution characteristics, and HM activity were analyzed. The results showed that Polyethylene (PE) and di(2-ethylhexyl) dicyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP) were the main MPs and PAEs, respectively. The abundance of MPs and the concentrations of free HM ions (Cd, Cu, and Ni) in the soil solution increased with increasing plastic film mulching duration. The Partial Least Squares Path Model (PLS-PM) indicated that after plastic film mulching, soil chemical properties (pH/amorphous Fe) and biological properties (Dissolved organic carbon/ Easily oxidizable carbon/Microbial biomass carbon) were the main controlling factors for free and complexed HM ions (Cd, Pb, Cu, and Ni). These results suggest that, after plastic film mulching, MPs indirectly regulate HM activity by altering soil properties. This study provides a new perspective for the management of MPs and HM activities in agricultural ecosystems.

Arsenic (As) and microplastic (MP) co-exposure is a major environmental problem in terrestrial ecosystems. Polyethylene and biodegradable plastics decompose into MP particles under microbial-mediated and weathering conditions. However, the effects of MP particles on physiological responses and As accumulation in maize have not been thoroughly explored. In this study, the effects of polyethylene microplastic particles (PEMPs) and biodegradable microplastic particles (BPMPs) on As accumulation, growth and physio-biochemical performance of maize seedlings (Zea mays L.) in As-contaminated soil were investigated. Our study showed that 10 % PE reduced As content in maize seedlings leaves (roots) by 41.19(34.53) µg kg-1, compared to the control. The 10 % BP reduced As content in maize seedlings leaves (roots) by 64.24 (57.27) µg kg-1. 10 % PE (10 % BP) reduced maize seedlings leaf area, total chlorophyll content and photosynthetic rate by 5.05 % (21.68 %), 44.98 % (57.12 %) and 65.29 % (77.89 %) and increased H2O2 content by 38.04 % (179.6 %), respectively. The antioxidant defense system of maize seedlings leaves was damaged by PEMPs and As co-exposure. Maize seedlings has adapted to stress by regulating antioxidant enzyme activity and the AsA-GSH cycle under BPMPs and As co-exposure. This study provides new insights into the effects of PEMPs and BPMPs on phytotoxicity and As accumulation in As-contaminated soils. Preliminarily data suggests that BPMPs may exhibit greater toxic effects on maize seedlings than PEMPs, which warrants further exploration.

Microplastics (MPs) that enter the soil can alter the physicochemical and biochemical properties of soil and affect speciation of heavy metals (HMs), thereby perturbing the bioavailability of HMs. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects are not understood. Therefore, we investigated the effects of MPs from poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate)-based biodegradable mulch (BM) and polyethylene mulch (PM) in Cd- or As-contaminated soil on soil properties and speciation of HMs. MPs were characterised using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The addition of MPs reduced the bioavailability of HMs in soil and promoted the transformation of HMs into inert fractions. The mechanisms underlying the reduction of the bioavailability of HMs in soils could be as follows: (1) the entry of MPs into the soil changed its properties, which reduced the bioavailability of HMs; (2) FTIR and XPS analyses revealed that the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups and benzene ring present on the surface of aged MPs stabilized complexes (As(V)-O) with As(V) may have directly reduced the bioavailability of As(V) in soil; (3) aged BM exposed more amounts and types of reactive functional groups and was more effective in stabilising soil HMs than PM. Overall, this study provides new insights regarding the complexation mechanisms of soil HMs by MPs from different plastic mulch sources.

A plasmonic refractive index sensor based on surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) that consist of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides and a whistle-shaped cavity is proposed. The transmission properties were simulated numerically by using the finite element method. The Fano resonance phenomenon can be observed in their transmission spectra, which is due to the coupling of SPPs between the transmission along the clockwise and anticlockwise directions. The refractive index-sensing properties based on the Fano resonance were investigated by changing the refractive index of the insulator of the MIM waveguide. Modulation of the structural parameters on the Fano resonance and the optics transmission properties of the coupled structure of two MIM waveguides with a whistle-shaped cavity were designed and evaluated. The results of this study will help in the design of new photonic devices and micro-sensors with high sensitivity, and can serve as a guide for future application of this structure.

AIMS: Relatively little is known about the use of medication for the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events in China, and the relevance to it of socioeconomic, lifestyle and health-related factors. METHODS AND RESULTS: We analysed cross-sectional data from the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB) of 512,891 adults aged 30-79 years recruited from 1737 rural and urban communities in China. Information about doctor-diagnosed ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke, and the use of medication for the secondary prevention of CVD events, were recorded by interview. Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) for use of secondary preventive treatment, adjusting simultaneously for age, sex, area and education. Overall, 23,129 (4.5%) participants reported a history of CVD (3.0% IHD, 1.7% stroke). Among them, 35% reported current use of any of 6 classes of drug (anti-platelet, statins, diuretics, ACE-I, ß-blockers or calcium-channel blockers) for the prevention of CVD events, with the rate of usage greater in those with older age, higher levels of income, education, BMI or blood pressure. The use of these agents was associated positively with history of diagnosed hypertension (OR 7.5; 95% confidence intervals: 7.08-8.06) and diabetes (1.40; 1.28-1.52) and inversely with self-rated health status, but there was no association with years since diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Despite recent improvements in hospital care in China, only one in three individuals with prior CVD was routinely treated with any proven secondary preventive drugs. The treatment rates were correlated with the existence of other risk factors, in particular evidence of hypertension.
