RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis hominis is the most common parasite identified in s worldwide. Although it is commonly identified in stool preparations, unusual to encounter B hominis in abdominal fluid. CASE: A 46-year-old woman presented with the clinical impression of acute peritonitis. The initial radiologic evaluation showed free air in the abdominal cavity and an abdominal mass. Abdominal fluid submitted for cytologic examination was diagnostic of acute inflammation with mixed bacteria and abundant cystlike forms of B hominis. The patient underwent an exploratory laparotomy that revealed a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma involving her bowel and peritoneum. CONCLUSION: The present case highlights the unusual identification ofextraintestinal forms of B hominis in a peritoneal fluid sample from a patient with invasive, poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma and associated bowel perforation.

RESUMO

Poly(l-lactide) (PLA) is a bioderived and biodegradable polymer that has limited applications due to its hard and brittle nature. Incorporation of 1,3-trimethylene carbonate into PLA, in a block copolymer fashion, improves the mechanical properties, while retaining the biodegradability of the polymer, and broadens its range of applications. However, the preparation of 1,3-trimethylene carbonate (TMC)/l-lactide (LA) copolymers beyond diblock and triblock structures has not been reported, with explanations focusing mostly on thermodynamic reasons that impede the copolymerization of TMC after lactide. We discuss the preparation of multiblock copolymers via the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of LA and TMC, in a step-wise addition, by a ferrocene-chelating heteroscorpionate zinc complex, {[fc(PPh2)(BH[(3,5-Me)2pz]2)]Zn(µ-OCH2Ph)}2 ([(fcP,B)Zn(µ-OCH2Ph)]2, fc = 1,1'-ferrocenediyl, pz = pyrazole). The synthesis of up to pentablock copolymers, from various combinations of LA and TMC, was accomplished and the physical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the resulting copolymers evaluated.

RESUMO

We report the synthesis of air-stable Pd(i) dimer complexes featuring biaryl phosphine ligands. Catalytic experiments suggest that these complexes are competent precatalysts that can mediate cross-coupling amination reactions between aryl halides with both aliphatic and aromatic amine nucleophiles. This work represents an expansion of the air-stable precatalyst toolbox for Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling transformations.

RESUMO

Influenza maintains a special position in human medicine as the cause of the greatest pandemic of disease in all of human history as well as a continuous and significant source of worldwide morbidity and mortality every year. The very nature of the influenza virus allows it to evade and adapt to the human population. We currently have useful tools such as vaccination and antiviral medications to limit this burden; however, appropriate vaccines take time to prepare, and antiviral drug resistance has emerged as a significant problem. Continued vigilance and pandemic planning are essential, given the continued threat of novel strains that can arise and rapidly cause disease across the world.

RESUMO

A simultaneous surgeon and side-view camera video analysis demonstrated that in situ fracture requires more ultrasonic power behind the iris than the stop-and-chop technique, which requires a longer period of manipulation of larger fragments in the anterior chamber.
