RESUMO

To address the disadvantages of poor water solubility, cardiotoxicity, and hypersensitivity reactions of paclitaxel (PTX). In this study, paclitaxel silk fibroin nanoparticles (PTX-SF-NPs) were prepared by self-assembly method, and then, the nanoparticles were encapsulated by using the outer membrane vesicles of Escherichia coli (E. coil), so that biofilm-encapsulated paclitaxel silk fibroin nanoparticles (OMV-PTX-SF-NPs) were constructed. Subsequently, the prepared nanoparticles were characterized in terms of particle size and zeta potential, and in vitro cytotoxicity studies were carried out, which showed that both PTX-SF-NPs and OMV-PTX-SF-NPs possessed good antitumor activity against tumor cells. In the in vivo biodistribution study and antitumor study, the results showed that OMV-PTX-SF-NPs could effectively increase the bioavailability of paclitaxel, prolong the action time of paclitaxel in vivo, reduce the absorption of paclitaxel in the stomach, increase the concentration of paclitaxel in tumor tissues, and significantly inhibit the growth of tumors. Overall, OMV-PTX-SF-NPs is a stable extended-release oral formulation of paclitaxel, which can effectively improve the bioavailability of paclitaxel, enhance the anti-tumor activity and reduce the adverse reactions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Finite element (FE) analysis and clinical follow-up were used to evaluate the efficacy of a modified lateral column lengthening (H-LCL) for treating flexible flatfoot. METHODS: By applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, we selected patients who underwent H-LCL surgery at our institution from January 2019 to January 2023. We compared the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) scores, Pain Interference (PI), and Physical Function (PF) scores in Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) between preoperative and final follow-up assessments of patients, as well as FE submodels. Furthermore, evaluate the H-LCL's biomechanical characteristics and clinical outcome before and after surgery. RESULTS: A total of 66 patients met the criteria. The average surgery time was 69.47 ± 13.22 min, and the follow-up duration was 15.18 ± 6.40 months. In the last follow-up, VAS and PI decreased compared to before surgery, while AOFAS and PF increased compared to before surgery. Meary's angle (dorsoplantar image and lateral image), calcaneal valgus angle, and talonavicular coverage angle decreased compared to before surgery, while the pitch angle increased compared to before surgery. In FE analysis, postoperative tension on the plantar fascia (PF), spring ligament (SL), and posterior tibial tendon (PTT) decreased compared to before surgery, pressure on the talonavicular joint and subtalar joints also decreased compared to before surgery, and there was no significant change in pressure on the calcaneocuboid joint. CONCLUSION: H-LCL in correcting flexible flatfoot resulted in a significant improvement of clinical outcome scores and led to good radiological correction of flatfoot deformities. It can reduce the soft tissue and interosseous pressure in maintaining the foot arch.

RESUMO

Studies have shown that the stem cell microenvironment is a key factor for stem cell maintenance or differentiation. In this study, we compared the expression of 23 cytokines such as IL-6, IL-10, and TNFα between young and aged rats during patellar tendon repair by cytokine microarray, and found that significant difference between IL-10, G-CSF, and VEGF at 3, 7, or 14 days post-operatively. The effects of these factors on adipogenic differentiation of TPSCs were examined through western blot and oil red O experiments. It was shown that VEGF had an inhibitive effect on the adipogenic differentiation of TPSCs. SPP-1 was figured out as our target by RNA sequencing and confirmed by western blot in vitro. Further in vivo studies showed that adipocyte accumulation was also decreased in the tendons of aged rats after injection of VEGF and the histological score and biomechanical property were also improved via targeting SPP-1. Furthermore, histochemical results showed that vascularization of the injury sites was significantly elevated. In conclusion, VEGF not only plays an important role in decreasing adipocyte accumulation but also improves vascularization of the tendon during aged tendon healing. We believe active regulation of VEGF may improve the treatment of age-related tendon diseases and tendon injuries.

RESUMO

Triethylamine (TEA) is an effective medium for inhibiting dye aggregation and improving the luminescence of dye-sensitized lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs). However, excessive TEA will cause quenching of upconversion luminescence. In this paper, the possible mechanism of TEA affecting upconversion luminescence is discussed. It is found that TEA can enhance the nucleophilicity of the solvent, leading to dye shedding from the nanoparticles. Reducing the dielectric constant of the solvent can make TEA play a more positive role in upconversion luminescence and photostability of dye-sensitized UCNPs. When heptanol is selected as the solvent for CyBSO-sensitized ß-NaYF4:20%Yb3+,2%Er3+ (UNs), TEA can increase the upconversion luminescence by 6.0 times relative to that in methanol. More importantly, the optimal content of TEA in heptanol is 3700 times more than that in methanol. Under the action of large amounts of TEA in heptanol, a novel upconversion nanoprobe for detecting ascorbic acid is developed with a limit of detection of 0.103 µM and high selectivity over potential interfering species. Meanwhile, the high concentration of TEA in heptanol can improve the photostability of CyBSO-sensitized UNs by 10.4 times, which is of paramount importance for the practical application of dye-sensitized UCNPs.

RESUMO

Catecholamines (CAs) are aromatic amines containing a 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl nucleus and an amine side chain. Representative CAs included the endogenous neurotransmitters epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine. CAs and their derivatives are good resources for the development of sympathomimetic or central nervous system drugs, while they also provide ligands important for G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) research. CAs are of broad interest in the fields of chemical, biological, medical, and material sciences due to their high adhesive capacities, chemical reactivities, metal-chelating abilities, redox activities, excellent biocompatibilities, and ease of degradability. Herein, we summarize CAs derivatives isolated and identified from microorganisms, plants, insects, and marine invertebrates in recent decades, alongside their wide range of reported biological activities. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the structural and biological diversities of CAs, the regularity of their natural occurrences, and insights toward future research and development pertinent to this important class of naturally occurring compounds.

RESUMO

The shape from polarization can recover the fine texture of the target surface. However, the gradient field for shape recovery by polarization is ambiguous, which is caused by the multi-value of the azimuth angle. In response to the problem, a method of correcting the ambiguity by the fusion of polarization binocular vision and shading information is proposed in this paper. An iterative optimization algorithm is designed to estimate the direction of the light source, which provides the basis for the shading method to calculate the depth map. Additionally. the low-frequency depth map generated by binocular matching is used to correct the polarization gradient field. The polarization gradient field of the holes and small zenith angle regions in the binocular are corrected by the improved shading method. In the experiment, four different material target objects were used for shape recovery and compared with other methods. The results of the fusion method proposed are better in terms of fine texture. At the camera working distance of  700 mm, the resolving power performs well and demonstrates that changes in the depth of at least 0.1 mm can be distinguished from that recovery result.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Allergic diseases are highly prevalent in the women of childbearing age. As we know, the immune system could change when pregnancy, which may affect the course of allergic diseases. Meanwhile, they also can affect the course and outcome of pregnancy. The data on incidence of allergies during pregnancy is lacking and conducting clinical trials in pregnant women was limited, therefore, we observed a prebirth cohort to supplement the relevant data and strengthen concerned research conductions. OBJECTIVE: We aim to obtain the incidence of allergies in urban pregnancy and explore the relevant factors of allergic diseases in urban pregnancy. METHODS: We design a multicenter and prospective cohort in 20 institutions above municipal level which were eligible according to the study design from 14 provinces covering all-side of China. This cohort was conducted from 13+6 weeks of gestation to 12 months postpartum and in our study, we chose the prenatal part to analyze. The outcome was developing allergies during pregnancy, which were diagnosed by clinicians according to the uniform criterion from National Health Commission. All the data was collected by electronic questionnaires through tablet computers. RESULTS: The incidence of allergic diseases in urban pregnant women was 21.0% (95%CI 20.0% ~ 22.0%). From social demography data, the history of allergies of pregnant women and their parents had statistical significance(p < 0.01); For exposure to living or working environment, house decoration for less than half a year, exposure to plush toys, disinfectants, insecticides, antihistamines, glucocorticoids, antipyretic analgesics, tocolytic agent and probiotics had statistical significance (all p < 0.05); For psychological status, self-rated depression and anxiety had statistical significance (p = 0.026;p = 0.006). CONCLUSION: The incidence of allergic diseases in urban pregnant women was similar to the former study and kept a medium-high level. The history of allergies of pregnant women and their parents, house decoration time, exposure to plush toys, disinfectants, insecticides, antihistamines, glucocorticoids, antipyretic analgesics, tocolytic agents, probiotics, self-rated depression, and anxiety were relevant factors of allergic diseases during pregnancy.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the medium and long-term follow-up outcomes of large cystic medial osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLTs) treated with autologous tibial osteoperiosteal grafts from the medial tibia, and to explore the risk factors influencing the treatment outcomes. METHODS: The retrospective study included 75 patients with large cystic medial OLTs who underwent autologous osteoperiosteal cylinder graft taken from the medial tibia between January 2004 and August 2018. They were assessed preoperatively and postoperatively using a visual analog scale (VAS), the Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society Ankle-Hindfoot Scale (AOFAS) and short-form 36-item questionnaire score (SF-36). Magnetic resonance observation of cartilage repair tissue (MOCART), second-look arthroscopy, and biopsy were used to evaluate the grafting areas. RESULTS: After a follow-up period of 6.3 years, the VAS score decreased to 1.47 ± 1.32, while the AOFAS and SF-36 scores increased to 82.78 ± 11.65 and 83.26 ± 8.49, respectively, all of which showed significant improvement over preoperative scores (P < .001), and the average MOCART score was 82.6 ± 8.4 (56.0-91.6). Eight patients underwent a second-look arthroscopic examination and were rated by the International Cartilage Repair Society scale; of them, 2 patients were rated grade Ⅰ, 4 were rated grade Ⅱ, and 2 were rated grade Ⅲ. Three patients underwent grafting area biopsy during the second-look arthroscopy, and the results showed that the grafting areas were rich in chondrocytes. Large-size OLTs (≥200 mm2) and obesity (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) were responsible for the poor improvement of AOFAS, according to multivariate Cox regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Autologous osteoperiosteal grafting was an effective treatment for large cystic medial OLTs, with effective cartilage regeneration in the grafted areas in the medium and long term. However, the large-size OLTs and obesity may reduce the treatment outcomes. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV, case series.

RESUMO

To improve the aqueous solubility and oral bioavailability of paclitaxel (PTX), a biomimetic system for oral administration of PTX was efficiently developed as an outer membrane vesicle (OMVs) of sodium caseinate (CAS) modified zein nanoparticles (OMVs-Zein-CAS-PTX-NPs) by Escherichia coli. To verify their structure and properties, the designed nanostructures were thoroughly characterized using various characterization techniques. The results indicated that hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces mainly drove the interaction between PTX and Zein, but the complex is unstable. The physicochemical stability of PTX-loaded zein nanoparticles was improved by the addition of CAS. The biological characteristics of biofilms are reproduced by nanoparticles cloaked with outer membrane vesicles. OMVs-Zein-CAS-PTX-NPs delayed the release of PTX under simulated gastric and intestinal fluids due to OMVs protection. OMVs-Zein-CAS-PTX-NPs exhibited remarkable antitumor ability in vitro and improved the bioavailability of oral administration of PTX in vivo. Therefore, OMVs cloaked in nanoparticles may be a suitable delivery vehicle to provide an efficient application prospect for the oral administration of PTX.

RESUMO

Background and Objectives: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe affliction that can have a profound impact on a person's ability to move and feel, affecting a significant number of individuals. However, rehabilitation after SCI treatment remains a critical method to improve motor-sensory functions, which improves the patient's quality of life. This study aims to describe the epidemiological profile of SCI during the COVID-19 pandemic ("COVID-19 period") and before and after the COVID-19 pandemic ("non-COVID-19 period") in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. Materials and Methods: Medical records of 93 patients diagnosed with SCI admitted to the rehabilitation department of Wuhan Tongji Hospital from January 2019 to May 2023 were retrospectively reviewed. Basic demographics and clinical characteristics such as level of injury, American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) Impairment Scale, treatment method, and concomitant injuries were analyzed. Results: Forty patients with SCI from the non-COVID-19 period and fifty-three patients from the COVID-19 period were identified. The mean ages were 38.80 ± 17.71 and 44.53 ± 13.27 years, respectively, with a consistent male-to-female ratio of 2:1 across both periods. Notably, falls accounted for the most prevalent mechanism of injury, constituting 50% of cases during the non-COVID-19 period and 37.74% during the COVID-19 period. The most common initial ASIA grade was B in the non-COVID-19 period and grade C in the COVID-19 period. In addition, the final ASIA grade after treatment was grade C in the non-COVID-19 period and grade D in the COVID-19 period. Conclusions: A greater proportion of males suffer from SCI, and the primary causes are falls and traffic accidents. Workers are the most vulnerable group to SCI among all patients. Prevention strategies should be customized based on the unique characteristics of SCI patients. This study highlights the importance of SCI rehabilitation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Anatomic anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) reconstruction with autologous single-bundle tendon has been widely used in the treatment of ATFL injury. However, there are few clinical reports of using the peroneus brevis tendon (PBT) for double-bundle ATFL reconstruction. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical effect of double-bundle ATFL reconstruction with PBT. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of all patients diagnosed with ATFL injury presenting from August 2019 to December 2021. Fifty-three patients were selected after screening based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The following data were compared before and after surgery: Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score, American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score, Karlsson Ankle Functional Score (KAFS), the pain interference (PI) and physical function (PF) scores of the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS), the diameter and width of PBT in ultrasound and muscle strength. RESULTS: All functional scores (VAS, PI/PF, AO-FAS, KAFS) and muscle strength were significantly improved at the last follow-up (P < 0.05). The diameter and width of the PBT on ultrasound postoperation were smaller than those preoperatively. CONCLUSION: Double-bundle ATFL reconstruction with the partial PBT technique is a feasible, anatomic reconstruction technique for chronic lateral instability of the ankle, which meets the anatomical characteristics of the double bundle of the ligament, and the absence of partial PBT does not affect the peroneal muscle strength. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV, retrospective case series.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Reconstructing bone structures and stabilizing adjacent joints are clinical challenges in treating talar necrosis and collapse (TNC). 3D printing technology has been demonstrated to improve the accuracy of talar replacement. This study aimed to evaluate anatomical talar replacement and the clinical results. METHODS: Nine patients with TNC were enrolled between 2016 and 2020. The prosthetic shape and size were designed by CT post-processing and mirror symmetry technology. The clinical outcomes included radiographic parameters of the forefoot, hindfoot, and ankle alignment, ankle activity, recurrent pain, and peri-operative complications. RESULTS: After a mean follow-up of 23.17 ± 6.65 months, degenerative arthritis and prosthetic dislocation and other complications were not observed on plain radiographs. Each 3D-printed talar prosthesis was placed in the original anatomical position. The parameters which have significant changes pre-operative and post-operative are as follows: talar height, 27.59 ± 5.99 mm and 34.56 ± 3.54 mm (95% CI - 13.05 to - 0.87, t = 2.94, P = 0.032) and Meary's angle, 11.73 ± 4.79° and 4.45 ± 1.82° (95% CI 1.29~22.44, t = 2.89, P = 0.034). The AOFAS hindfoot score improved from 26.33 ± 6.62 to 79.67 ± 3.14 at the final follow-up (95% CI 43.36~63.30, t = 13.75, P = 0.000). The VAS score decreased from 6.33 ± 1.03 to 0.83 ± 0.75 (95% CI 4.40~6.60, t = 12.84, P = 0.000). The post-operative satisfaction scores regarding pain relief, activities of daily living, and return to recreational activities were good to excellent, and the change of activity range was statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: The 3D printing patient-specific total talar prostheses allowed anatomical reconstruction in TNC. This novel treatment with 3D-printed prostheses could serve as a reliable patient-specific alternative in TNC.

RESUMO

The quality of an image is limited to the signal-to-noise ratio of the output from sensors. As the background noise increases much more than the signal, which can be caused by either a huge attenuation of light pulses after a long-haul transmission or a blinding attack with a strong flood illumination, an imaging system stops working properly. Here we built a superconducting single-photon infrared camera of negligible dark counts and 60 ps timing resolution. Combining with an adaptive 3D slicing algorithm that gives each pixel an optimal temporal window to distinguish clustered signal photons from a uniformly distributed background, we successfully reconstructed 3D single-photon images at both a low signal level (∼1 average photon per pixel) and extremely high noise background (background-to-signal ratio = 200 within a period of 50 ns before denoising). Among all detection events, we were able to remove 99.45% of the noise photons while keeping the signal photon loss at 0.74%. This Letter is a direct outcome of quantum-inspired imaging that asks for a co-development of sensors and computational methods. We envision that the proposed methods can increase the working distance of a long-haul imaging system or defend it from blinding attacks.

RESUMO

Simiao Yong'an Decoction is composed of Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, Scrophulariae Radix, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizome, which was chosen as one of the 100 classic prescriptions in Catalogue of Ancient Classics Prescription(the first batch). Through tracing to the source, It was found that the Simiao Yong'an Decoction(but not named) originated from the Shi Shi Mi Lu, and was later cited by books such as Ancient and Modern Book Integration-Full Record of Medical Department and New Edition of Useful Prescriptions. Literature shows that this prescription was not named until first reported in the Effect of Traditional Chinese Medicine on Arterial Embolism Gangrene in 1956 by a journalist LYU Min. This article recorded that SHIJIA Baoshan, a monk from Hebei Province, used self-named "Simiao Yong'an Decoction" to treat local arterial embolic gangrene. After comparison, there was two difference between ancient books and SHIJIA Baoshan's records. Firstly, according to ancient books, the composition and dosage of Simiao Yong'an Decoction is Lonicerae Japonicae Flos 90 g, Scrophulariae Radix 90 g, Angelicae Sinensis Radix 60 g, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizome 30 g", and the ratio is 3∶3∶2∶1. By SHIJIA Baoshan's record, the composition and dosage are: Lonicerae Japonicae Flos 66 g, Scrophulariae Radix 132 g, Angelicae Sinensis Radix 99 g, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizome 33 g, and the ratio changed to 2∶4∶3∶1. Secondly, ancient books show that patients can be healed after taking seven or ten days of the previous prescription, however, it would take 3 or 4 months, even 7 months in SHIJIA Baoshan's records. It can be considered that the previous prescription should be used at the beginning of gangrene, while the modified Simiao Yong'an Decoction by SHIJIA Baoshan is widely used in the middle and late stages of gangrene, even the critical condition, that is the reason for longer treatment and larger dosage. Nowadays, Simiao Yong'an Decoction is not limited to the treatment of gangrene and bulla in clinic. Relevant studies have confirmed that Simiao Yong'an Decoction has the effects such as anti-inflammatory, plaque stabilization, lipid-lowering, vascular protection, improvement of hemorheology, anticoagulation, inhibition of thrombosis and fibrinolysis, etc. In the follow-up, we should carry out the analysis of the compatibility of this four medicines, and redefine the scope of its clinical application under the theory of traditional Chinese medicine.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study insulin sensitivity and the serum level of adiponectin in infants with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and the effect of breastfeeding on the insulin sensitivity through a follow-up study. METHODS: A total of 106 full-term IUGR infants who were hospitalized from October 2014 to October 2018 were enrolled as the IUGR group, and 90 full-term appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infants who were born during the same period of time were enrolled as the AGA group. Birth weight and body length were recorded. Serum levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), insulin, and adiponectin were measured on day 7 after birth. Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated. According to the feeding pattern, the IUGR group was further divided into a breastfeeding group with 37 infants and a formula feeding group with 42 infants. The above serum indices and growth indices were also measured at the age of 3 and 6 months. RESULTS: Compared with the AGA group, the IUGR group had significantly increased levels in serum insulin and HOMA-IR and a significantly decreased level of adiponectin (P<0.05). There were no significant differences between the breastfeeding and formula feeding groups in growth indices and serum levels of FBG, TG, LDL, and HDL on day 7 after birth and at the ages of 3 and 6 months (P>0.05). In the breastfeeding group, serum insulin and HOMA-IR decreased and adiponectin level increased over the time of breastfeeding (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Insulin sensitivity decreases in the early stage after birth in IUGR infants, and breastfeeding can improve insulin sensitivity.

RESUMO

Since December 2019, the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has occurred in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. The infected cases were noted mostly in adults, but rarely reported in children, especially neonates. Most children with SARS-CoV-2 infection present mainly with respiratory symptoms, but less commonly with gastrointestinal symptoms, and tend to have mild clinical symptoms. A neonate with SARS-CoV-2 infection, who had vomiting and milk refusal as the first symptom, was recently admitted to Wuhan Children's Hospital. After two weeks of treatment, the patient recovered gradually and was discharged. Here, this case is reported to improve the understanding of SARS-CoV-2 infection in neonates.

RESUMO

Tendon injury repairs are big challenges in sports medicine, and fatty infiltration after tendon injury is very common and hampers tendon injury healing process. Tendon stem cells (TSCs), as precursors of tendon cells, have shown promising effect on injury tendon repair for their tenogenesis and tendon extracellular matrix formation. Adipocytes and lipids accumulation is a landmark event in pathological process of tendon injury, and this may induce tendon rupture in clinical practice. Based on this, it is important to inhibit TSCs adipogenesis and lipids infiltration to restore structure and function of injury tendon. Aspirin, as the representative of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), has been widely used in tendon injury for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic actions, but effect of aspirin on TSCs adipogenesis and fatty infiltration is still unclear. Under adipogenesis conditions, TSCs were treated with concentration gradient of aspirin. Oil red O staining was performed to observe changes of lipids accumulation. Next, we used RNA sequencing to compare profile changes of gene expression between induction group and aspirin-treated group. Then, we verified the effect of filtrated signalling on TSCs adipogenesis. At last, we established rat tendon injury model and compared changes of biomechanical properties after aspirin treatment. The results showed that aspirin decreased lipids accumulation in injury tendon and inhibited TSCs adipogenesis. RNA sequencing filtrated PTEN/PI3K/AKT signalling as our target. After adding the signalling activators of VO-Ohpic and IGF-1, inhibited adipogenesis of TSCs was reversed. Still, aspirin promoted maximum loading, ultimate stress and breaking elongation of injury tendon. In conclusion, by down-regulating PTEN/PI3K/AKT signalling, aspirin inhibited adipogenesis of TSCs and fatty infiltration in injury tendon, promoted biomechanical properties and decreased rupture risk of injury tendon. All these provided new therapeutic potential and medicine evidence of aspirin in treating tendon injury and tendinopathy.

RESUMO

This study enrolled 3266 pregnant women, to explore the relationship of prenatal phthalate exposure with the risk of preterm birth and gestational age. All participants filled questionnaires and provided with up to three urine samples during three trimesters. Seven phthalate metabolites in urines were measured. The incidences of very preterm, late preterm, early-term, late-term and postterm births were 0.58%, 3.52%, 24.22%, 10.53%, and 0.34%, respectively. Non-linear relationships were shown between phthalate metabolites and gestational age. Except for monomethyl phthalate (OR = 1.65, 95%CI = 1.17-2.34), the average concentrations of phthalate metabolites were associated with a slightly and insignificantly increased risk of overall preterm birth (<37+0 gestational weeks). Through a restricted cubic spline regression, phthalate metabolites were found to be related to the risk of overall preterm birth in a linear manner (p-value >0.05) or a non-linear manner (p-value <0.05). All curves indicated the overall preterm birth risk rose with the increase of phthalate metabolite concentrations. Finally, compared with full-term birth (39+0 to 40+6 gestational weeks), phthalate metabolites were associated with the elevated risks of very preterm, late preterm and postterm births, although some relationships were not statistically significant. In conclusion, these findings suggested non-linear associations between phthalate metabolites and gestational age. Exposure to some phthalate metabolites was associated with increased risks of overall preterm birth and postterm birth.

RESUMO

The assessment of the combined effects of multiple phthalate exposures at low levels is a newly developed concept to avoid underestimating their actual cumulative health risk. A previous study included 3455 Chinese pregnant women. Each woman provided up to three urine samples (in total 9529). This previous study characterized the concentrations of phthalate metabolites. In the present study, the data from 9529 samples was reanalyzed to examine the cumulative risk assessment (CRA) with two models: (1) the creatinine-based and (2) the volume-based. Hazard index (HI) values for three phthalates, dibutyl phthalate, butyl benzyl phthalate, and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, in the first, second, and third trimesters of pregnancy, were calculated, respectively. In creatinine-based model, 3.43%, 14.63%, and 17.28% of women showed HI based on the European Food Safety Authority tolerable daily intake exceeding 1 in the first, second, and third trimester of pregnancy, respectively. The intraclass correlation coefficient of HI was 0.49 (95% confidence interval: 0.46-0.53). Spearman correlations between HI of the creatinine model and ∑androgen disruptor (a developed potency weighted approach) ranged from 0.824 to 0.984. In summary, this study suggested a considerable risk of cumulative exposure to phthalates during the whole gestation in Chinese pregnant women. In addition, moderate temporal reproducibility indicated that single HI, estimated by the phthalate concentration in single spot of urine, seemed representative to describe the throughout pregnancy CRA. Finally, strong correlation between HI of the creatinine model and ∑androgen disruptor revealed that the creatinine-based model was more appropriate to evaluate the CRA.

RESUMO

A picosecond (ps) mid-infrared (MIR) optical parametric amplifier (OPA) with LiInSe2 crystal was demonstrated for the first time. The MIR OPA was pumped by a 30 ps 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser and injected by a barium boron oxide (BBO)-based widely tunable near-infrared seed. A maximum idler pulse energy of 433 µJ at 4 µm has been obtained under a pump energy of 17 mJ, and the corresponding pulse duration was estimated to be ~13 ps. To our knowledge, this is the highest single pulse energy generated by LiInSe2 crystal. Furthermore, an idler spectrum tuning from 3.6 to 4.8 µm was investigated at fixed pump energy of 15 mJ.
