RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate a novel method for the green synthesis of iron nanoparticles (FeNPs) using marigold extract (Calendula officinalis L), kraft pulping black liquor, and nanocellulose. Then, the efficacy of FeNPs as a direct nanofertilizer on the growth parameters of marigold was investigated. Characterization techniques including FESEM, EDX, VSM, and FTIR were used to confirm the successful synthesis of FeNPs. The characterization results confirmed the formation and presence of FeNPs in the 20-100 nm range. FeNPs synthesized with nanocellulose notably enhanced marigold growth parameters compared to other materials. However, all nanoparticle variants, including those from marigold extract and black liquor, improved germination, plant height, root length, and plant dry weight compared to the control. Moreover, treatments exhibited higher available iron and total plant iron levels than the control. Thus, employing 10 mg FeNPs (prepared with 5.0 % nanocellulose) appears optimal for enhancing marigold growth and yield.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to produce high-performance and biodegradable starch nanocomposites through film casting by using corn starch/nanofibrillated cellulose (CS/NFC) and corn starch/nanofibrillated lignocellulose (CS/NFLC). NFC and NFLC were obtained by super grinding process and added to fibrogenic solutions (1, 3, and 5 g/100 g of starch). The addition of NFC and NFLC from 1 to 5 % was verified to be influential in enhancing mechanical properties (tensile, burst, and tear index) and reducing WVTR, air permeability, and essential properties in food packaging materials. But, in comparison to control samples, the addition of NFC and NFLC from 1 to 5 % decreased the opacity, transparency, and tear index of films. In acidic solutions, produced films were more soluble than in alkaline or water solutions. The soil-biodegradability analysis showed that after 30 days of exposure to soil, the control film lost 79.5 % of its weight. The weight loss of all films was >81 % after 40 days. The results of this study may contribute to expanding the industrial applications of both NFC and NFLC by laying a basis for preparing high-performance CS/NFC or CS/NFLC.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of preharvest chitosan-Myrtus communis essential oil composite (1.5 and 3.0 %) and postharvest nanocellulose (0.3 and 0.6 %) on the quality of strawberries. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis led to identification of 32 compounds in the Myrtus communis essential oil. The study showed that using CHS-ES composite coating for foliar application could increase the lifespan of the fruit by up to 24 days. This is because it increases the levels of components, such as phenol content (TPC) total flavonoids content (TFC) vitamin C, firmness and SSC. It also enhances the effectiveness of enzymes such, as glutathione peroxidase (GSH POD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO). The use of CHS-ES treatments reduced the weight loss of fruits between 50 and 80 %, which is very important from the commercial point of view and maintaining nutritional properties, marketability and appearance. The microscopic analysis further revealed that using CHS-ES composite + nanocellulose coating produced a more continuous and uniform surface than the control. In general, this method is both safe and environmentally friendly while also proving to be effective, in preserving and enhancing the quality of strawberries.
