RESUMO

The general-relativistic phenomenon of spin-induced orbital precession has not yet been observed in strong-field gravity. Gravitational-wave observations of binary black holes (BBHs) are prime candidates, as we expect the astrophysical binary population to contain precessing binaries1,2. Imprints of precession have been investigated in several signals3-5, but no definitive identification of orbital precession has been reported in any of the 84 BBH observations so far5-7 by the Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors8,9. Here we report the measurement of strong-field precession in the LIGO-Virgo-Kagra gravitational-wave signal GW200129. The binary's orbit precesses at a rate ten orders of magnitude faster than previous weak-field measurements from binary pulsars10-13. We also find that the primary black hole is probably highly spinning. According to current binary population estimates, a GW200129-like signal is extremely unlikely, and therefore presents a direct challenge to many current binary-formation models.

RESUMO

Nature-based climate solutions (NCS) are championed as a primary tool to mitigate climate change, especially in forested regions capable of storing and sequestering vast amounts of carbon. New England is one of the most heavily forested regions in the United States (>75% forested by land area), and forest carbon is a significant component of climate mitigation policies. Large infrequent disturbances, such as hurricanes, are a major source of uncertainty and risk for policies relying on forest carbon for climate mitigation, especially as climate change is projected to alter the intensity and extent of hurricanes. To date, most research into disturbance impacts on forest carbon stocks has focused on fire. Here, we show that a single hurricane in the region can down between 121 and 250 MMTCO2e or 4.6%-9.4% of the total aboveground forest carbon, much greater than the carbon sequestered annually by New England's forests (16 MMTCO2e year-1). However, emissions from hurricanes are not instantaneous; it takes approximately 19 years for downed carbon to become a net emission and 100 years for 90% of the downed carbon to be emitted. Reconstructing hurricanes with the HURRECON and EXPOS models across a range of historical and projected wind speeds, we find that an 8% and 16% increase in hurricane wind speeds leads to a 10.7- and 24.8-fold increase in the extent of high-severity damaged areas (widespread tree mortality). Increased wind speed also leads to unprecedented geographical shifts in damage, both inland and northward, into heavily forested regions traditionally less affected by hurricanes. Given that a single hurricane can emit the equivalent of 10+ years of carbon sequestered by forests in New England, the status of these forests as a durable carbon sink is uncertain. Understanding the risks to forest carbon stocks from disturbances is necessary for decision-makers relying on forests as a NCS.

RESUMO

Carotid Blowout Syndrome (CBS) is a critical and often fatal complication associated with head and neck malignancies. CBS is characterized by three stages: threatened, impending, and acute rupture/hemorrhage. The condition is notably linked with a history of radiotherapy for head and neck cancers, with an incidence of approximately 3-4% among those who have received such treatment. Historically, surgical management of CBS has involved open surgical ligation. However, advancements in endovascular techniques, including endovascular destructive procedures (e.g., coil embolization) and reconstructive procedures (e.g., carotid artery stenting), have become increasingly prevalent. This report presents two cases where a self-expandable PTFE-coated nitinol stent with a heparin coating (Viabahn; Gore and Associates) was utilized in the treatment of CBS.

RESUMO

A rapid and online microvolume flow-through dialysis probe designed for sample preparation in the analysis of veterinary drug residues is introduced. This study addresses the need for efficient and green sample preparation methods that reduce chemical waste and reagent use. The dialysis probe integrates with liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (LC-MS) systems, facilitating automated, high-throughput analysis. The dialysis method utilizes minimal reagent volumes per sample, significantly reducing the generation of solvent waste compared to traditional sample preparation techniques. Several veterinary drugs were spiked into tissue homogenates and analyzed to validate the probe's efficacy. A diagnostic sensitivity of >97% and specificity of >95% were obtained for this performance evaluation. The results demonstrated the effective removal of cellular debris and particulates, ensuring sample integrity and preventing instrument clogging. The automated dialysis probe yielded recovery rates between 27 and 77% for multiple analytes, confirming its potential to streamline veterinary drug residue analysis, while adhering to green chemistry principles. The approach highlights substantial improvements in both environmental impact and operational efficiency, presenting a viable alternative to conventional sample preparation methods in regulatory and research applications.

RESUMO

Mounting evidence suggests that climate change will cause shifts of tree species range and abundance (biomass). Abundance changes under climate change are likely to occur prior to a detectable range shift. Disturbances are expected to directly affect tree species abundance and composition, and could profoundly influence tree species spatial distribution within a geographical region. However, how multiple disturbance regimes will interact with changing climate to alter the spatial distribution of species abundance remains unclear. We simulated such forest demographic processes using a forest landscape succession and disturbance model (LANDIS-II) parameterized with forest inventory data in the northeastern United States. Our study incorporated climate change under a high-emission future and disturbance regimes varying with gradients of intensities and spatial extents. The results suggest that disturbances catalyze changes in tree species abundance and composition under a changing climate, but the effects of disturbances differ by intensity and extent. Moderate disturbances and large extent disturbances have limited effects, while high-intensity disturbances accelerate changes by removing cohorts of mid- and late-successional species, creating opportunities for early-successional species. High-intensity disturbances result in the northern movement of early-successional species and the southern movement of late-successional species abundances. Our study is among the first to systematically investigate how disturbance extent and intensity interact to determine the spatial distribution of changes in species abundance and forest composition.

RESUMO

To unveil presently inscrutable details of the origins of our universe imprinted in the cosmic microwave background, future experiments in the millimeter and submillimeter range are focusing on the detection of fine features, which necessitate large and sensitive detector arrays to enable multichroic mapping of the sky. Currently, various approaches for coupling light to such detectors are under investigation, namely, coherently summed hierarchical arrays, platelet horns, and antenna-coupled planar lenslets. The last option offers increased bandwidth and a simpler fabrication while maintaining the desired optical performance. In this work, the design, fabrication, and experimental characterization of a prototype planar metamaterial phase-engineered lenslet operating in W-band [75 GHz; 110 GHz] is presented. Its radiated field, initially modeled and measured on a systematics-limited optical bench, is compared against a simulated hyperhemispherical lenslet, a more established technology. It is reported here that our device reaches the cosmic microwave background (CMB) specification for the next stages of experiments, demonstrating power coupling above 95% and beam Gaussicity above 97% while maintaining ellipticity below 10% and a cross-polarization level below -21d B through its operating bandwidth. Such results underline the potential advantages our lenslet can offer as focal optics for future CMB experiments.

RESUMO

The digestion of protein into peptide fragments reduces the size and complexity of protein molecules. Peptide fragments can be analyzed with higher sensitivity (often > 102 fold) and resolution using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometers, leading to improved pattern recognition by common machine learning algorithms. In turn, enhanced sensitivity and specificity for bacterial sorting and/or disease diagnosis may be obtained. To test this hypothesis, four exemplar case studies have been pursued in which samples are sorted into dichotomous groups by machine learning (ML) software based on MALDI-TOF spectra. Samples were analyzed in 'intact' mode in which the proteins present in the sample were not digested with protease prior to MALDI-TOF analysis and separately after the standard overnight tryptic digestion of the same samples. For each case, sensitivity (sens), specificity (spc), and the Youdin index (J) were used to assess the ML model performance. The proteolytic digestion of samples prior to MALDI-TOF analysis substantially enhanced the sensitivity and specificity of dichotomous sorting. Two exceptions were when substantial differences in chemical composition between the samples were present and, in such cases, both 'intact' and 'digested' protocols performed similarly. The results suggest proteolytic digestion prior to analysis can improve sorting in MALDI/ML-based workflows and may enable improved biomarker discovery. However, when samples are easily distinguishable protein digestion is not necessary to obtain useful diagnostic results.

RESUMO

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is an atherosclerotic disease that impairs blood flow and muscle function in the lower limbs. A skeletal muscle myopathy characterized by mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative damage is present in PAD; however, the underlying mechanisms are not well established. We investigated the impact of chronic ischemia on skeletal muscle microcirculatory function and its association with leg skeletal muscle mitochondrial function and oxygen delivery and utilization capacity in PAD. Gastrocnemius samples and arterioles were harvested from patients with PAD (n = 10) and age-matched controls (Con, n = 11). Endothelium-dependent and independent vasodilation was assessed in response to flow (30 µL·min-1), acetylcholine, and sodium nitroprusside (SNP). Skeletal muscle mitochondrial respiration was quantified by high-resolution respirometry, microvascular oxygen delivery, and utilization capacity (tissue oxygenation index, TOI) were assessed by near-infrared spectroscopy. Vasodilation was attenuated in PAD (P < 0.05) in response to acetylcholine (Con: 71.1 ± 11.1%, PAD: 45.7 ± 18.1%) and flow (Con: 46.6 ± 20.1%, PAD: 29.3 ± 10.5%) but not SNP (P = 0.30). Complex I + II state 3 respiration (P < 0.01) and TOI recovery rate were impaired in PAD (P < 0.05). Both flow and acetylcholine-mediated vasodilation were positively associated with complex I + II state 3 respiration (r = 0.5 and r = 0.5, respectively, P < 0.05). Flow-mediated vasodilation and complex I + II state 3 respiration were positively associated with TOI recovery rate (r = 0.8 and r = 0.7, respectively, P < 0.05). These findings suggest that chronic ischemia attenuates skeletal muscle arteriole endothelial function, which may be a key mediator for mitochondrial and microcirculatory dysfunction in the PAD leg skeletal muscle. Targeting microvascular dysfunction may be an effective strategy to prevent and/or reverse disease progression in PAD.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Ex vivo skeletal muscle arteriole endothelial function is impaired in claudicating patients with PAD, and this is associated with attenuated skeletal muscle mitochondrial respiration. In vivo skeletal muscle oxygen delivery and utilization capacity is compromised in PAD, and this may be due to microcirculatory and mitochondrial dysfunction. These results suggest that targeting skeletal muscle arteriole function may lead to improvements in skeletal muscle mitochondrial respiration and oxygen delivery and utilization capacity in claudicating patients with PAD.

RESUMO

Invasive forest insects have significant direct impacts on forest ecosystems and they are also generating new risks, uncertainties, and opportunities for forest landowners. The growing prevalence and inexorable spread of invasive insects across the United States, combined with the fact that the majority of the nation's forests are controlled by thousands of autonomous private landowners, raises an important question: To what extent will private landowners alter their harvest practices in response to insect invasions? Using a quasi-experimental design, we conducted a causal analysis to investigate the influence of the highly impactful emerald ash borer (EAB) on (1) annual probability of harvest; (2) intensity of harvest; and (3) diameter of harvested trees, for both ash and non-ash species on private land throughout the Midwest and mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. We found that EAB detection had a negative impact on annual harvest probability and a positive impact on harvest intensity, resulting in a net increase in harvested biomass. Furthermore, our estimates suggest that EAB detection will influence private landowners to harvest greater quantities of ash, relative to non-ash species. We also found that harvested trees in EAB-infested areas had smaller diameters, on average, compared with those unaffected by EAB. These results can help policymakers, forest managers, and extension programs to anticipate and better advise landowners and managers about their options and the associated outcomes for forests.

RESUMO

We use the Multiple Element Limitation (MEL) model to examine responses of 12 ecosystems to elevated carbon dioxide (CO2 ), warming, and 20% decreases or increases in precipitation. Ecosystems respond synergistically to elevated CO2 , warming, and decreased precipitation combined because higher water-use efficiency with elevated CO2 and higher fertility with warming compensate for responses to drought. Response to elevated CO2 , warming, and increased precipitation combined is additive. We analyze changes in ecosystem carbon (C) based on four nitrogen (N) and four phosphorus (P) attribution factors: (1) changes in total ecosystem N and P, (2) changes in N and P distribution between vegetation and soil, (3) changes in vegetation C:N and C:P ratios, and (4) changes in soil C:N and C:P ratios. In the combined CO2 and climate change simulations, all ecosystems gain C. The contributions of these four attribution factors to changes in ecosystem C storage varies among ecosystems because of differences in the initial distributions of N and P between vegetation and soil and the openness of the ecosystem N and P cycles. The net transfer of N and P from soil to vegetation dominates the C response of forests. For tundra and grasslands, the C gain is also associated with increased soil C:N and C:P. In ecosystems with symbiotic N fixation, C gains resulted from N accumulation. Because of differences in N versus P cycle openness and the distribution of organic matter between vegetation and soil, changes in the N and P attribution factors do not always parallel one another. Differences among ecosystems in C-nutrient interactions and the amount of woody biomass interact to shape ecosystem C sequestration under simulated global change. We suggest that future studies quantify the openness of the N and P cycles and changes in the distribution of C, N, and P among ecosystem components, which currently limit understanding of nutrient effects on C sequestration and responses to elevated CO2 and climate change.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Consensus agreements regarding laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) advise against using staple loads less than 1.5 mm in closed staple height. However, few data exist to support this recommendation. We hypothesized that using staples with a shorter closed height would actually decrease incidence of intraoperative and postoperative bleeding during LSG, while not increasing the incidence of leak. METHODS: All LSG cases for a single institution from 1/1/2014 to 12/31/2019 were exported for analysis. Two cohorts were established: 1. 'Green/Blue' group was cases in which no white cartridges were used and 2. 'White' group was cases in which any white cartridges were used. Demographic variables, procedural characteristics, hospital length of stay, and postoperative outcomes were compared between groups. RESULTS: The study populations included 1710 patients, 974 in the green/blue group and 736 in the white cartridge group. There were no significant differences in postoperative leak, bleed, stricture, readmission, or death while using white staple loads as compared with the standard combination of blue and green loads. CONCLUSION: Using staples with a shorter closed height during LSG did not impact the postoperative bleeding or leak rate. The impact from selection of shorter staples to achieve more tissue compression may be limited.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Standardization of the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy procedure is needed to improve patient outcomes. A single-fire 23 cm stapler was developed to streamline the operation. Comparative testing conducted on excised human tissue has demonstrated the superiority of the novel Titan SGS stapler to two commonly utilized commercial devices in both staple line integrity and burst pressure. We hypothesized that the stapler would be safe and effective in creating longitudinal gastric resections in human patients. METHODS: 61 patients were enrolled to undergo gastric resection with the Titan SGS stapler. Perioperative interventions and post-operative adverse events were recorded. Upper GI study was completed on post-operative day 1, and patients were followed for 6 weeks post-operatively to determine any subacute device-related adverse events. RESULTS: Surgeon feedback for intraoperative device utilization and post-operative gastric pouch shape were positive. Adverse events were found to be mild, limited, and generally well-known effects of bariatric surgery. One episode of post-operative hemorrhage required surgical takeback, with no criminal bleeding vessel identified. CONCLUSION: The Titan SGS stapler is both safe and effective in sleeve gastrectomy pouch creation.

RESUMO

A 96-well microplate reader for absorption spectroscopy was designed, constructed, and tested at a total cost of ca. 500 USD. The reduced cost of the device represents the major technical contribution of this manuscript, as costs were reduced 7 fold from previous reports. The device was able to achieve 3σ limits of detection of ca. 0.01 absorbance units (AU) over a 60 second measurement for the mid-visible wavelength range. Component parts are either commercially available, or 3D printed from plans. Analysis wavelength can be altered throughout the visible region through use of various photographic or theatrical filters. This feature allows the well plate reader to be used for typical laboratory assays such as cell population estimation by optical density (OD) at 600 nm, or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) at 450 nm. This manuscript reports on the motivation and process of constructing the device, lists required parts, presents data demonstrating device function, and provides the community of scholars with plans to reproduce the work. The device can be reproduced in laboratories lacking sufficient resources to purchase commercially available options and this outcome contributes towards empowerment of individuals and equity of scientific enquiry.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Supervised exercise therapy (SET) is a first-line treatment for patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). The efficacy of SET is most commonly expressed by significant statistical improvement of parameters that do not clarify how each individual patient will benefit from SET. This study examined the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) in walking speed in claudicating patients with PAD after SET. METHODS: A total of 63 patients with PAD-related claudication (Fontaine stage II PAD) participated in a 6-month SET program. Self-selected walking speed was measured before and after SET. Distribution and anchor-based approaches were used to estimate the MCID for small and substantial improvement. The ability to walk one block and the ability to climb one flight of stairs questions were chosen as anchor questions from the Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short Form questionnaire. Receiver operating characteristics curve analyses were performed to detect the threshold for MCID in walking speed after treatment. RESULTS: The distribution-based method estimated 0.03 m/s as a small improvement and 0.08 m/s as a substantial improvement after SET. Small and substantial improvements according to the anchor question walking one block were 0.05 m/s and 0.15 m/s, respectively. For the climbing one flight of stairs anchor question, 0.10 m/s was a small improvement. Receiver operating characteristics curve analyses identified an increase of 0.04 m/s and 0.03 m/s for improvement based on walking one block and climbing one flight of stairs, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: We report our findings for the MCID for walking speed among claudicating patients receiving SET. Claudicating patients who increase walking speed of 0.03 m/s or greater are more likely to experience a meaningful improvement in walking impairment than those who do not. The MCID reported in this study can serve as a benchmark for clinicians to develop goals and interpret clinically meaningful progress in the care of claudicating patients with PAD.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Surgeon choice of the appropriate staple height has been cited as a factor in the mechanical integrity of a staple line. However, tissue measured at the industry standard 8 g/mm2 is usually thicker than the formed staple height of the staples that hold it together. This means that the pressure that the staples apply must be greater than 8g/mm2. Additionally, formed staple heights in tissue may be different than formed staple heights of the same cartridge type when fired without tissue. This means that there is likely a compressive limit to the individual staples deployed by the stapling system. The purpose of this study is to establish the degree to which staple heights of endocutter staples auto-adjust to tissue and the compressive limit to tissue that this infers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Excised gastric remnants from laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy were measured for tissue thickness at different external pressures. An optimized experimental staple line was then created in parallel to the clinical staple line. The doubly-stapled gastric sliver then underwent computed tomography with solid modeling software to measure staple heights. RESULTS: Staple heights fired in gastric tissue were significantly different than industry labelled and control staple heights. Clinical staple heights were significantly shorter than measured tissue thickness at 8 g/mm2. Staple height more closely approximated tissue thickness under 15 g/mm2 of pressure, rather than the 8 g/mm2 loading pressure used by industry for tissue thickness range labelling. CONCLUSIONS: Staples deployed in human gastric tissue are taller than commercial labelling. The closed staple height corresponds to tissue thickness under 15g/mm2 of pressure, not the labelled staple height. These results demonstrate that staple heights from modern endocutter staplers adjust to tissue, approximating a maximum compressive force just above 15g/mm2.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Optimal stapler selection during laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy requires careful balance between tissue compression, hemostasis, and mechanical integrity. Junctions along a staple line can further increase the risks of technical or mechanical staple line failures. The aim of this study was to compare two commonly utilized laparoscopic linear gastrointestinal staplers (Ethicon, Medtronic) with a novel linear stapler (Titan) designed to perform a sleeve gastrectomy with a single stapler firing. METHODS: Excised gastric remnants from laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy were utilized and tissue thickness was measured from fundus to antrum. An optimized experimental staple line was then created. The greater curve remnant was insufflated to determine the staple line burst pressure and location. The doubly stapled (clinical and experimental) gastric specimen underwent staple analysis for junctional location, malformation, and height. RESULTS: The Titan stapler withstood a significantly higher burst pressure than both Ethicon and Medtronic linear cutting staplers. While the Medtronic and Ethicon staplers had a similar percentage of staples in junctions, the Titan stapler has no junctions. In considering the formation of all staples outside of junctions, the Medtronic and Titan staplers had no difference in percentage of malformed staples, while the Ethicon stapler had a significantly higher percentage. Additionally, there were no differences in mismatch between staple height and tissue thickness between experimental groups. CONCLUSIONS: The Titan stapler conveys the mechanical benefits of higher burst pressure with the advantage of single load functionality. This single staple load eliminates staple line junctions without sacrificing the integrity of staple formation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Widespread adoption of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) for atrial fibrillation and venous thromboembolism treatment has resulted in peripheral bypass patients receiving therapeutic anticoagulation with DOACs postoperatively. This study was undertaken to evaluate patient outcomes after open peripheral bypass based on anticoagulation treatment. METHODS: Postoperative treatment and outcomes of patients undergoing peripheral bypass operations between January 2012 and December 2017 from a statewide multicenter quality improvement registry were examined. Surgeons participating in the registry were surveyed on practice patterns regarding DOACs in bypass patients. Multivariate logistic regression was performed for 30-day transfusion outcomes, and multiple linear regression was performed for length of stay. RESULTS: Among 9682 patients, 7685 patients received no anticoagulation, whereas 1379 received a vitamin K antagonist (VKA) and 618 received a DOAC postoperatively. Patients receiving anticoagulation compared with no anticoagulation had a higher body mass index and were more likely to have preoperative anemia, congestive heart failure, and atrial fibrillation (all P < .001). Compared with patients receiving VKAs, patients receiving DOACs were less likely to have chronic kidney disease (P = .002) and more likely to have atrial fibrillation (P < .001). The shortest length of stay was among patients receiving no anticoagulation (median, 5 days; interquartile range, 3-9 days; P < .001), followed by DOACs (median, 6 days; interquartile range 3-11 days; P < .001) and VKAs (median, 8 days; interquartile range, 5-13 days; P < .001). Compared with patients receiving VKAs postoperatively, there was no difference in readmission for anticoagulation complications, bypass thrombectomy or thrombolysis, major amputation, or graft patency at 1 year among patients receiving DOACs. On multivariate logistic regression, patients receiving a DOAC (odds ratio, 0.743; confidence interval, 0.59-0.94; P = .011) or no anticoagulation (odds ratio, 0.792; confidence interval, 0.69-0.91; P = .001) were less likely to require transfusion within 30 days than patients taking VKAs. Approximately 70% of the surveyed surgeons reported that they "sometimes" or "always" use DOACs instead of VKAs for protection of a high-risk bypass. CONCLUSIONS: Among patients undergoing lower extremity surgical bypass, those receiving a DOAC postoperatively had a shorter length of stay and were less likely to receive a transfusion in 30 days without compromising graft patency and readmission for anticoagulation complications, thrombectomy, or thrombolysis or affecting amputation rate compared with those receiving a VKA. A majority of surgeons within the quality collaborative have adopted the use of DOACs after peripheral bypass, suggesting the need for a prospective trial evaluating DOAC safety and efficacy in patients requiring anticoagulation for high-risk bypass grafts.

RESUMO

With an ageing population and increasing incidence of cerebrovascular disease, an increasing number of patients presenting for routine and emergency surgery have a prior history of stroke. This presents a challenge for pre-, intra-, and postoperative management as the neurological risk is considerably higher. Evidence is lacking around anaesthetic practice for patients with vascular neurological vulnerability. Through understanding the pathophysiological changes that occur after stroke, insight into the susceptibilities of the cerebral vasculature to intrinsic and extrinsic factors can be developed. Increasing understanding of post-stroke systemic and cerebral haemodynamics has provided improved outcomes from stroke and more robust secondary prevention, although this knowledge has yet to be applied to our delivery of anaesthesia in those with prior stroke. This review describes the key pathophysiological and clinical considerations that inform clinicians providing perioperative care for patients with a prior diagnosis of stroke.

RESUMO

There are many optical detection and sensing methods used today that provide powerful ways to diagnose, characterize, and study materials. For example, the measurement of spontaneous Raman scattering allows for remote detection and identification of chemicals. Many other optical techniques provide unique solutions to learn about biological, chemical, and even structural systems. However, when these systems exist in a highly scattering or turbid medium, the optical scattering effects reduce the effectiveness of these methods. In this article, we demonstrate a method to engineer the geometry of the optical interface of a turbid medium, thereby drastically enhancing the coupling efficiency of light into the material. This enhanced optical coupling means that light incident on the material will penetrate deeper into (and through) the medium. It also means that light thus injected into the material will have an enhanced interaction time with particles contained within the material. These results show that, by using the multiple scattering of light in a turbid medium, enhanced light-matter interaction can be achieved; this has a direct impact on spectroscopic methods such as Raman scattering and fluorescence detection in highly scattering regimes. Furthermore, the enhanced penetration depth achieved by this method will directly impact optical techniques that have previously been limited by the inability to deposit sufficient amounts of optical energy below or through highly scattering layers.

RESUMO

Landscape and climate changes have the potential to create or exacerbate problems with stormwater management, high flows, and flooding. In New England, four plausible land-use scenarios were co-developed with stakeholders to give insight to the effects on ecosystem services of different trajectories of socio-economic connectedness and natural resource innovation. With respect to water, the service of greatest interest to New England stakeholders is the reduction of stormwater and flooding. To assess the effects of these land-use scenarios, we applied the Soil and Water Assessment Tool to two watersheds under two climates. Differences in land use had minimal effects on the water balance but did affect high flows and the contribution of storm runoff to streamflow. For most scenarios, the effect on high flows was small. For one scenario-envisioned to have global socio-economic connectedness and low levels of natural resource innovation-growth in impervious areas increased the annual maximum daily flow by 10%, similar to the 5-15% increase attributable to climate change. Under modest population growth, land-use decisions have little effect on storm runoff and high flows; however, for the two scenarios characterized by global socio-economic connectedness, differences in choices regarding land use and impervious area have a large impact on the potential for flooding. Results also indicate a potential interaction between climate and land use with a shift to more high flows resulting from heavy rains than from snowmelt. These results can help inform land use and development, especially when combined with assessments of effects on other ecosystem services.
