RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between the entorhinal cortex (EC) and the hippocampus has been studied by different authors, who have highlighted the importance of grid cells, place cells, and the trisynaptic circuit in the processes that they regulate: the persistence of spatial, explicit, and recent memory and their possible impairment with ageing. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine whether older age causes changes in the size and number of grid cells contained in layer III of the EC and in the granular layer of the dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus. METHODS: We conducted post-mortem studies of the brains of 6 individuals aged 56-87 years. The brain sections containing the DG and the adjacent EC were stained according to the Klüver-Barrera method, then the ImageJ software was used to measure the individual neuronal area, the total neuronal area, and the number of neurons contained in rectangular areas in layer III of the EC and layer II of the DG. Statistical analysis was subsequently performed. RESULTS: We observed an age-related reduction in the cell population of the external pyramidal layer of the EC, and in the number of neurons in the granular layer of the DG. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that ageing causes a decrease in the size and density of grid cells of the EC and place cells of the DG.

RESUMO

The present paper investigates the phenotypic parameters of stimulation markers and cell immunosuppression markers in an animal model using flow cytometry analysis. Six dogs were exposed to 2, 4 or 6 Gy following a head and neck protocol. Samples of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were collected before irradiation, representing standard values for all dogs (control), and at 2 h, 18 h and 30 d after irradiation. Such samples were separately assessed for surface markers with the monoclonal antibodies anti-CD5, anti-CD4 and anti-CTLA-4 by flow cytometry. A reduction in Tcell expression of CD5 and in the subpopulation expressing CD4 and an increase in CTLA-4 expression were found. No statistically significant differences were observed for the absorbed dose grouping, although the time kinetics were recorded. Radiation induced phenotypic differences between the lymphocyte lineages, reducing the CD5 and CD4 Tcell subpopulations and increasing CTLA-4 expression. The findings demonstrate the relevance of investigating the immunophenotype of irradiated subjects by examining the peripheral cell lineage.

RESUMO

Incineration of sewage sludge doped with several heavy metals was studied at small pilot plant scale in a bubbling fluidized bed of 15cm i.d. and 5.2m height. Some ceramic and metallic filters were tested at a relatively high temperature (600-700 degrees C) to check their usefulness for partitioning of heavy metals in the flue gas. The work was focused on the fate of six selected heavy metals (Cr, Cd, Ni, Zn, Cu, Pb). In this process, there were four exit flows or discharges for these metals: bottom ash, coarse fly ash, cake filter or fine fly ash and flue exit gas. The distribution or partitioning of each heavy metal (HM) among these four exit flows was studied. Only cadmium and sometimes lead showed any difference between the different HMs considered. All other HMs seems to have the same fate, distribution or partitioning. Such distribution is governed or ruled by the fluid dynamics in the incinerator, cyclone and ceramic filter. Most of the HMs do not have enough residence time in this incinerator type to diffuse out of the ash particle and so remain in the particle. The amount of each HM in each exit flow in this process is governed by fluid dynamics and kinetics and not at all by thermodynamics.

RESUMO

A case of acute pancreatitis associated with primary hyperparathyroidism is reported. There was none of usual causes of pancreatitis, which did not recur following the removal of a parathyroid adenoma. There are over one hundred of cases of acute or chronic pancreatitis associated with hyperparathyroidism in the literature, suggesting a causal relationship between the two entities. The pancreatic disease has been attributed either to the hypercalcemia or to the excess of circulating parathyroid hormone. However, some authors have recently questioned any link between these two diseases.

RESUMO

Case report of a 15-year-old girl presenting compression of the duodenum by the superior mesenteric artery, occurring after the application of a body plaster cast for correction of a idiopathic thoracic scoliosis, which required a gastrojejunostomy. The clinical and radiological pictures of this case fall into the rare entity called the "cast syndrome". The salient features of this syndrome are commented.

RESUMO

Duodenal leiomyoma represents a very unusual cause for acute gastrointestinal bleeding. The authors report the case of a 49-year-old male with a massive bleeding from an ulcerated duodenal leiomyoma involving the ampulla of Vater. An emergency Whipple's pancreaticoduodenectomy was carried out under suspicion of local malignancy. It is emphasized that the proper diagnosis of smooth muscle tumors is often difficult, both clinically and from the pathological point of view.

RESUMO

The p73 proteins are present in different kinds of cells of the central nervous system, such as the choroid plexus, circumventricular structures and neuroepithelium. It has been reported that spontaneously hypertensive rats show ventricular dilation, changes in cerebrospinal fluid proteins and variations in the circumventricular structures such as the organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis and the choroid plexus, which are altered in ventricular dilation. The aim of the present work is to study p73 expression in the organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis and the choroid plexus and its variations in high blood pressure. Brains from control Wistar-Kyoto rats and spontaneously hypertensive rats were used. The organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis and the choroid plexus were processed by immunohistochemistry and western blot with anti-TAp73. We found weaker markings in the organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis and stronger markings in the choroid plexus of the hypertensive than the control rats. Therefore, hypertension in the spontaneously hypertensive rats produces alterations in choroid plexus protein p73 expression that is similar to that described for other circumventricular organs, but it is different in the organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis. We can conclude that the functional balance between p73, organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis and choroid plexus, which is probably necessary to maintain the normal functioning of these structures, is altered by the hypertension found in these rats.

RESUMO

Reissner's fibre (RF) is formed by the polymerization of the glycoprotein secreted by the subcommissural organ (SCO). The SCO also secretes soluble glycoprotein into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF); variations in RF and SCO have been reported in hydrocephalus. On the other hand, hydrocephalus and other brain alterations have been described in p73 mutant mice. The p73 belongs to the tumour suppressor p53 protein family and has two isoforms: the TAp73 with apoptotic activity and DeltaNp73 with anti-apoptotic function. Moreover, the TAp73 isoform is glycosylated and secreted into the CSF. In the present work, we analysed the variations in RF and p73 proteins in the CSF and SCO of spontaneously hydrocephalic rats. Brains from control rats and spontaneously hydrocephalic rats of 12 months of age were used. The SCO sections were immunohistochemically processed with anti-TAp73 and anti-Reissner fibre (AFRU). The spontaneous hydrocephalus presents a decrease in the AFRU immunoreactive material in the SCO and an absence of RF. The anti-TAp73 was also present, slightly decreased, in the hydrocephalic SCO. AFRU and p73 bands were also detected in the CSF by western blot and six AFRU and p73 protein bands of a similar molecular weight were found in the CSF of the control rats. The number of AFRU and p73 bands was lower in the hydrocephalic rats than in the control rats. In conclusion, hydrocephalus produces a decrease in the secretions of the SCO and an absence of RF and a decrease in p73 and RF proteins in the CSF.

INTRODUCTION: Knowledge of torque and force production capacity and moment arm patterns throughout the movement, and their influence on the torque produced, are essential for understanding human movement and may be of great use for controlling the overload imposed on the muscle-tendon structure. OBJECTIVE: To present mechanical criteria for progression in internal rotation (IR) and external rotation (ER) exercises of the shoulder in the sagittal plane. METHOD: Six individuals were assessed using an isokinetic dynamometer and an electrogoniometer. From the data collected, the mean torque, mean resultant force and weighted mean moment arm were calculated using the SAD32 and Matlab® software. RESULTS: The angles at which the peak ER and IR torque occurred were -34º and 6º with values of 43 Nm and 69 Nm, respectively. The peaks for ER and IR muscle force were at 35º and -14º, and the values at these angles were 10227 N and 8464 N, respectively. The weighted mean moment arm for ER presented an increasing pattern over the whole range of motion (ROM) and the peak was at the end of the ROM, i.e. at -50º (0.91 cm). The weighted mean moment arm for IR was almost constant with its peak at 50º (0.96 cm). CONCLUSION: The mechanical criteria for progression in internal and external rotation exercises of the shoulder are torque, force and weighted mean moment arm because different overloads on the muscle-tendon structure can be caused according to their patterns over the ROM.
