RESUMO

Franckeite is a naturally occurring layered mineral with a structure composed of alternating stacks of SnS2-like and PbS-like layers. Although this superlattice is composed of a sequence of isotropic two-dimensional layers, it exhibits a spontaneous rippling that makes the material structurally anisotropic. We demonstrate that this rippling comes hand in hand with an inhomogeneous in-plane strain profile and anisotropic electrical, vibrational, and optical properties. We argue that this symmetry breakdown results from a spatial modulation of the van der Waals interaction between layers due to the SnS2-like and PbS-like lattices incommensurability.

RESUMO

Psoriasis is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disease with a genetic background that involves almost 3% of the general population worldwide. Approximately, 70-90% of patients with psoriasis suffer from pruritus, an unpleasant sensation that provokes a desire to scratch. Despite the enormous progress in understanding the mechanisms that cause psoriasis, the pathogenesis of psoriasis-related pruritus still remains unclear. In order to improve patients' quality of life, development of more effective and safer antipruritic therapies is necessary. In turn to make it possible, better understanding of complexed and multifactorial pathogenesis of this symptom is needed. In this article we have systematized the current knowledge about pruritus origin in psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study has been to compare the effect of dietary supplementation of ß-1,3/1,6-glucan, Lactobacillus plantarum bacteria or their mixture on the growth performance, selected parameters of the immune system as well as the liver and intestinal histology of roach. Fish were fed for 14 days with four different diets, each treatment being carried out in triplicate. In control group, fish were fed dry commercial starter feed Aller Performa 2 (Aller Aqua, Denmark). The other experimental fish groups received the same commercial starter feed supplemented with: 1% ß-1,3/1,6-glucan (Leiber® Beta-S) in group G; 108 cfu L. plantarum g- 1 in group L; 1% ß-1,3/1,6-glucan + 108 cfu L. plantarum g- 1 in group G + L. The stimulating effect of the tested preparations was evaluated once the feeding with commercial feed exclusively was resumed and 2 weeks afterwards. RESULTS: No effect on the survivability and growth performance of the fish was observed in any of the groups. Supplementation of feed with ß-1,3/1,6-glucan improved (P < 0.05) selected parameters of innate humoral immunity and the pinocytotic activity of phagocytes. Increased respiratory burst activity of head kidney phagocytes (RBA) was observed in groups L and G + L (P < 0.05), and the effect persisted for 2 weeks after the commercial feed regime was resumed. An analogous tendency was determined for the killing activity of phagocytes (PKA) of the head kidney with respect to Aeromonas hydrophila, although this effect appeared only during the feed supplementation period. Supplying roach with ß-1,3/1,6-glucan, singly or with L. plantarum, had no effect (P > 0.05) on the proliferation of mitogen-activated lymphocytes. However, an increase in the number of CD3-positive cells and goblet cells was noticed in the digestive system of the L group fish (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The results show that feeding fish with added L. plantarum and ß-1,3/1,6-glucan stimulates the non-specific resistance mechanisms and raises the counts of intestinal immune cells. Synbiotic may help to control serious bacterial diseases and offer an alternative to antibiotics commonly used in fish farming, and its prolonged immunostimulatory effect could increase fish surviving after release to the natural environment.

Exciton fine structure splitting in semiconductors reflects the underlying symmetry of the crystal and quantum confinement. Because the latter factor strongly enhances the exchange interaction, most work has focused on nanostructures. Here, we report on the first observation of the bright exciton fine structure splitting in a bulk semiconductor crystal, where the impact of quantum confinement can be specifically excluded, giving access to the intrinsic properties of the material. Detailed investigation of the exciton photoluminescence and reflection spectra of a bulk methylammonium lead tribromide single crystal reveals a zero magnetic field splitting as large as ∼200 µeV. This result provides an important starting point for the discussion of the origin of the large bright exciton fine structure splitting observed in perovskite nanocrystals.

The encapsulation of two-dimensional layered materials such as black phosphorus is of paramount importance for their stability in air. However, the encapsulation poses several questions, namely, how it affects, via the weak van der Waals forces, the properties of the black phosphorus and whether these properties can be tuned on demand. Prompted by these questions, we have investigated the impact of hexagonal boron nitride encapsulation on the structural and vibrational properties of few layer black phosphorus, using a first-principles method in the framework of density functional theory. We demonstrate that the encapsulation with hexagonal boron nitride imposes biaxial strain on the black phosphorus material, flattening its puckered structure, by decreasing the thickness of the layers via the increase of the puckered angle and the intra-layer P-P bonds. This work exemplifies the evolution of structural parameters in layered materials after the encapsulation process. We find that after encapsulation, phosphorene (single layer black phosphorous) contracts by 1.1% in the armchair direction and stretches by 1.3% in the zigzag direction, whereas few layer black phosphorus mainly expands by up to 3% in the armchair direction. However, these relatively small strains induced by the hexagonal BN, lead to significant changes in the vibrational properties of black phosphorus, with the redshifts of up to 10 cm-1 of the high frequency optical mode A g 1. In general, structural changes induced by the encapsulation process open the door to substrate controlled strain engineering in two-dimensional crystals.

Lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have emerged as an excellent class of semiconductors for next-generation solar cells and optoelectronic devices. Tailoring physical properties by fine-tuning the lattice structures has been explored in these materials by chemical composition or morphology. Nevertheless, its dynamic counterpart, phonon-driven ultrafast material control, as contemporarily harnessed for oxide perovskites, has not yet been established. Here, we use intense THz electric fields to obtain direct lattice control via nonlinear excitation of coherent octahedral twist modes in hybrid CH3NH3PbBr3 and all-inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskites. These Raman-active phonons at 0.9 to 1.3 THz are found to govern the ultrafast THz-induced Kerr effect in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase and thus dominate the phonon-modulated polarizability with potential implications for dynamic charge carrier screening beyond the Fröhlich polaron. Our work opens the door to selective control of LHP's vibrational degrees of freedom governing phase transitions and dynamic disorder.

The recent surge in the sale of cannabidiol (CBD)-based topicals has risen rapidly in recent years, as it can be used to treat a multitude of skin disorders. However, there is minimal regulation concerning actual CBD content in these products. Topicals on the market may contain various concentrations of CBD and may be combined with a range of other compounds. The concentration of CBD has to be determined before the products enter the market. For this reason, a selective analytical method was developed using a 23 factorial design; and validated to determine CBD content in various topicals based on ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) followed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The method showed good precision (relative standard deviation ≤ 7.7%), accuracy at three concentration levels (recovery > 97.9%) for three different matrices, acceptable linearity (R2 > 0.99), and limit of detection (0.05 µg/mg). The method was successfully applied to the analysis of five commercial topicals. The proposed method is rapid, sensitive, precise, and accurate. In addition, it does not require derivatization and it is suitable for the determination of CBD in topicals for quality control purposes.

RESUMO

Mathematical modelling helps to describe the functional and causal relationships between objects in the physical world. The complexity of these models increases as more components and variables are added to maintain and observe. Differential equations are regularly used in these models, as they are able to display the interactions between several variables and describe non-linear behaviour. Differential equations are commonly used in immune response mathematical models to help describe these complex and dynamic interactions within the immune system of the organism. Time delays in the immune system are common and are often disregarded due to the low-resolution of models, which provide limited description of the specific section of immune system being studied. The few models that incorporate time delays are mostly at the epidemiological level, to track the spread of the virus in the population. In this paper we review the applications of the models based on differential equations and describe their potential utilization for the studies of immune response in SARS-CoV-2.

The family of 2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites is currently attracting great interest of the scientific community as highly promising materials for energy harvesting and light emission applications. Despite the fact that these materials are known for decades, only recently has it become apparent that their optical properties are driven by the exciton-phonon coupling, which is controlled by the organic spacers. However, the detailed mechanism of this coupling, which gives rise to complex absorption and emission spectra, is the subject of ongoing controversy. In this work we show that the particularly rich, absorption spectra of (PEA)2(CH3NH3)n-1PbnI3n+1 (where PEA stands for phenylethylammonium and n = 1, 2, 3), are related to a vibronic progression of excitonic transition. In contrast to other two-dimensional perovskites, we observe a coupling to a high-energy (40 meV) phonon mode probably related to the torsional motion of the NH3+ head of the organic spacer.

Sourdough fermentation is a traditional process that is used to improve bread quality. A spontaneous sourdough ecosystem consists of a mixture of flour and water that is fermented by endogenous lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts. The aim of this study was to identify bacterial diversity during backslopping of spontaneous sourdoughs prepared from wheat, spelt, or rye wholemeal flour. Culture-dependent analyses showed that the number of LAB (109  CFU/ml) was higher by three orders of magnitude than the number of yeasts (106  CFU/ml), irrespective of the flour type. These results were complemented by next-generation sequencing of the 16S rDNA V3 and V4 variable regions. The dominant phylum in all sourdough samples was Firmicutes, which was represented exclusively by the Lactobacillales order. The two remaining and less abundant phyla were Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes. The culture-independent approach allowed us to detect changes in microbial ecology during the 72-hr fermentation period. Weissella sp. was the most abundant genus after 24 hr of fermentation of the rye sourdough, but as the process progressed, its abundance decreased in favor of the Lactobacillus genus similarly as in wheat and spelt sourdoughs. The Lactobacillus genus was dominant in all sourdoughs after 72 hr, which was consistent with our results obtained using culture-dependent analyses. This work was carried out to determine the microbial biodiversity of sourdoughs that are made from wheat, spelt, and rye wholemeal flour and can be used as a source of strains for specific starter cultures to produce functional bread.

AIMS: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is an important risk factor for cognitive decline and motor dysfunction due to progressive muscular atrophy. Chronic hyperglycemia may be responsible for impaired vascular function, loss of muscle mass, and morphological abnormalities in the myocytes. For the proper functioning of the neuromuscular system, two crucial growth factors are necessary: brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), whose reduced expressions have been implicated in progressive neuropathy and muscle atrophy in patients with T1DM. The aim of the study was to compare the effects of two different exercise regimes (continuous and intermittent) on BDNF, IGF-1, blood glucose and inflammatory cytokine responses in young adults with and without Type 1 diabetes. METHODS: Fourteen patients (aged: 26.9 years) with T1DM and age-matched adults without diabetes participated in a 40 min continuous exercise (ExC, 50% of lactate threshold) and a high intensity intermittent exercise (ExInt, 120% of lactate threshold). During the study the patients performed self-monitoring of blood glucose levels (SMBG) under glycemic control. The effects of ExC and ExInt on BDNF, IGF-1, insulin like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP-3), insulin (INS), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-ß) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) were analyzed. RESULTS: BDNF and IGF-1 baseline serum levels were significantly lower in the T1DM patients compared to the healthy controls, but we found that ExInt and ExC significantly increase the secretion of BDNF and IGF-1 levels. Significant increases in BDNF and TGF-ß levels, higher blood glucose decline, and a lower incidence of hypoglycaemia in ExInt compared to ExC were observed. Lower IGFBP-3 concentrations were revealed in T1DM patients in response to ExInt compared to ExC, suggesting a positive effect on IGF-1/IGFBP-3 ratio and the bioavailability of IGF-1. CONCLUSIONS: According to our results physical exercise has beneficial effects on serum BDNF and IGF-1 levels. A high-intensity intermittent exercise may be more effective at reducing the risk of exercise-induced glycaemic disorders in the T1DM patients as compared to continuous exercise.

INTRODUCTION: Immune-potentiating functions of Lactobacillus plantarum strains in the common carp were evaluated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fourteen days of feeding fish dry diet supplemented with the bacteria provided parameters of nonspecific humoral immunity (lysozyme, ceruloplasmin, γ-globulin, total protein levels, and serum bactericidal activity) and cellular immunity (pinocytosis, respiratory burst activity, and potential killing activity of organ phagocytes), as well as the proliferative response of organ lymphocytes stimulated with mitogens. The resistance of fish to infection with Aeromonas hydrophila was also determined. RESULTS: Dietary supplementation with L. plantarum had a substantial influence on the activity of organ phagocytes, especially the potential killing activity of head kidney cells. A significant increase in the proliferative activity of LPS-stimulated B lymphocytes and in the levels of γ-globulins and total protein was observed. The supplemented diet conveyed higher resistance than the control diet as the cumulative fish mortalities after infection with A. hydrophila were 65% and 85%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that dietary supplementation with L. plantarum stimulates the antibacterial resistance of common carp and may reinforce defence against bacterial infections, but further studies need to be conducted.

Current problems in occupational medicine result mainly from the situation in which existing structures are not appropriately adapted to the changes in economy, work market structures and social and demographic trends, which rapidly appeared within the last decade. The Act of Occupational Medicine Service in force precisely defines the duties of occupational medicine services. However, although the legal powers seem clear and detailed, the possibility of real actions is not put in order and encounters many barriers. The changes in structures of economy, enterprises and work market result in the situation in which despite the obligatory preventive examination system, there is a large group of people that are not subject to them. Care of workers in bigger companies or institutions is also the source of problems concerning mainly the examination range, but also the identification of new threats connected with ergonomics, psychological or biological factors; their limiting, monitoring and prevention. A broad issue of provided service qualities is closely connected with the problems mentioned above. Another question is defining the quality control system, the execution of post-control suggestions and the possibility of applying possible sanctions. A significant task is also to modify the examining and specialisation acquirement system. In the creation of the new image of occupational medicine in Poland the most significant issue is to correct the current legal grounds by introducing new standards of health protection for working people, enable to provide high- quality services, create the conditions for functioning of multidiscipline teams preventively caring of working people, being a guarantee of health and economic benefits for the society.

The exceptional tribological properties of articular cartilage are still far from being fully understood. Articular cartilage is able to withstand high loads and provide exceptionally low friction. Although the regeneration abilities of the tissue are very limited, it can last for many decades. These biomechanical properties are realized by an interplay of different lubrication and wear protection mechanisms. The deterioration of cartilage due to aging or injury leads to the development of osteoarthritis. A current treatment strategy focuses on supplementing the intra-articular fluid with a saline solution containing hyaluronic acid. In the work presented here, we investigated how changing the lubricating fluid affects friction and wear of articular cartilage, focusing on the boundary and mixed lubrication as well as interstitial fluid pressurization mechanisms. Different length and time scales were probed by atomic force microscopy, tribology and profilometry. We compared aqueous solutions with different NaCl concentrations to a viscosupplement containing hyaluronic acid (HA). In particular, we found that the presence of ions changes the frictional behavior and the wear resistance. In contrast, hyaluronic acid showed no significant impact on the friction coefficient, but considerably reduced wear. This study confirms the previous notion that friction and wear are not necessarily correlated in articular cartilage tribology and that the main role of HA might be to provide wear protection for the articular surface.

Pheochromocytoma of the adrenal gland secreting catecholamines is a relatively rare endocrinological cause of secondary arterial hypertension, usually developing in people aged between 40 and 50, more often in women than in men. Each accidentally diagnosed lesion in adrenal glands is an incidentalom0a. Incidentalomas are most commonly benign tumours: adenomas, adipomas and angiomas; less often they are of a malignant or metastatic character. Establishing the character of the lesion and its hormonal activity is of crucial diagnostic significance. Diagnostics of pheochromocytoma covers marking the urine output of catecholamines and their metabolites, as well as marking serum amine concentration. Possible treatment of hormonally active lesions includes their surgical removal. This thesis presents the case of a young female suffering from arterial hypertension for several years, including organ complications, who was diagnosed with pheochromocytoma selectively secreting dopamine.

OBJECTIVES: Some studies indicate that the Trp64Arg polymorphism in the gene encoding the beta(3)-adrenergic receptor (ADRB3) is associated with obesity, insulin resistance and earlier onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the frequency of ADRB3 polymorphism and its association with metabolic syndrome in postmenopausal women. METHODS: We performed the study on 284 randomly chosen postmenopausal women, aged 50-60 years, who were then selected to the study. Measurements of anthropometric parameters and biochemical estimations such as lipid profile, glucose and insulin level in serum were carried out using commercial kits. ADRB3 genotyping was performed by polymerase chain reaction and mini-sequencing. RESULTS: The frequency of the Trp64/Arg64 genotype in the investigated population was 13%, and of the Trp64/Trp64 genotype, 85%. The Arg64/Arg64 genotype was present in only 2% of women. Metabolic syndrome was recognized in 22% of women bearing Trp64/Arg64 genotype and in 14% of women bearing Trp64/Trp64 genotype, without a statistically significant difference between the two groups (p > 0.05 in the chi(2) test). Women bearing the Trp64/Arg64 genotype had lower serum levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) than Trp64/Trp64 genotype women (63.2 +/- 13.0 vs. 71.4 +/- 17.4 mg/dl). Both groups did not differ in any other investigated parameter. CONCLUSION: Trp64Arg polymorphism of the beta(3)-adrenergic receptor gene is not related to metabolic syndrome in postmenopausal Polish women; however, it seems to be associated with decreased HDL-C levels.

Synaptic plasticity of horizontally orientated connections between barrels, in the barrel cortex of adult mice, was studied in slice preparations cut across rows of barrels. Field potentials were evoked in the middle of one barrel column (in layer IV or V) and recorded in the neighbouring barrel (in layer IV and V). In layer IV, long-term depression (LTD) by 26.5 +/- 5% was first induced by a low-frequency stimulation (2 Hz) applied for 10 min. After 30 min, theta-burst stimulation was delivered to previously depressed connections, resulting in long-term potentiation (LTP) by 28.8 +/- 11.8%. When theta-burst stimulation was delivered without an earlier low-frequency stimulation, no LTP was induced. Similar results were obtained in layer V connections (LTD: 40.6 +/- 12.5%; LTP: 26.9 +/- 12.5%). In layer IV, the application of 100 micro m d,l-2-amino-5-phosphonovaleric acid (APV), an antagonist of NMDA receptors, blocked the induction of both LTD and LTP. These experiments show that a potential for synaptic plasticity is retained in granular and infragranular layers of adult mice.

RESUMO

This review describe the effect of manganese on the heart and blood vessels. The interaction between manganese and redox systems and manganese contribution to atherosclerosis development were also investigated. The results of the experimental studies on animals, on isolated blood vessels in vitro and on people professionally exposed to manganese were presented.
