RESUMO

We present a single-shot method to measure motional states in the number basis. The technique can be applied to systems with at least three nondegenerate energy levels which can be coupled to a linear quantum harmonic oscillator. The method relies on probing an Autler-Townes splitting that arises when a phonon-number changing transition is strongly coupled. We demonstrate the method using a single trapped ion and show that it may be used in a nondemolition fashion to prepare phonon number states. We also show how the Autler-Townes splitting can be used to measure phonon number distributions.

RESUMO

We studied the thermodynamic properties such as the entropy, heat (JQ), and work (JW) rates involved when an atom passes through a Ramsey zone, which consists of a mode field inside a low-quality factor cavity that behaves classically, promoting rotations on the atomic state. Focusing on the atom, we show that JW predominates when the atomic rotations are successful, maintaining its maximum purity as computed by the von Neumann entropy. Conversely, JQ stands out when the atomic state ceases to be pure due to its entanglement with the cavity mode. With this, we interpret the quantum-to-classical transition in light of the heat and work rates. Besides, we show that, for the cavity mode to work as a Ramsey zone (classical field), several photons (of the order of 106) need to cross the cavity, which explains its classical behavior, even when the inside average number of photons is of the order of unity.

RESUMO

We show an optical wave-mixing scheme that generates quantum light by means of a single three-level atom. The atom couples to an optical cavity and two laser fields that together drive a cycling current within the atom. Weak driving in combination with strong atom-cavity coupling induces transitions in a harmonic ladder of dark states, accompanied by single-photon emission via a quantum Zeno effect and suppression of atomic excitation via quantum interference. For strong driving, the system can generate coherent or Schrödinger cat-like fields with frequencies distinct from those of the applied lasers.
