Mannheimia haemolytica is a major contributor to bovine respiratory disease (BRD), which causes substantial economic losses to the beef industry, and there is an urgent need for rapid and accurate diagnostic tests to provide evidence for treatment decisions and support antimicrobial stewardship. Diagnostic sequencing can provide information about antimicrobial resistance genes in M. haemolytica more rapidly than conventional diagnostics. Realizing the full potential of diagnostic sequencing requires a comprehensive understanding of the genetic markers of antimicrobial resistance. We identified genetic markers of resistance in M. haemolytica to macrolide class antibiotics commonly used for control of BRD. Genome sequences were determined for 99 M. haemolytica isolates with six different susceptibility phenotypes collected over 2 years from a feedlot in Saskatchewan, Canada. Known macrolide resistance genes estT, msr(E), and mph(E) were identified in most resistant isolates within predicted integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs). ICE sequences lacking antibiotic resistance genes were detected in 10 of 47 susceptible isolates. No resistance-associated polymorphisms were detected in ribosomal RNA genes, although previously unreported mutations in the L22 and L23 ribosomal proteins were identified in 12 and 27 resistant isolates, respectively. Pangenome analysis led to the identification of 79 genes associated with resistance to gamithromycin, of which 95% (75 of 79) had no functional annotation. Most of the observed phenotypic resistance was explained by previously identified antibiotic resistance genes, although resistance to the macrolides gamithromycin and tulathromycin was not explained in 39 of 47 isolates, demonstrating the need for continued surveillance for novel determinants of macrolide resistance.IMPORTANCEBovine respiratory disease is the costliest disease of beef cattle in North America and the most common reason for injectable antibiotic use in beef cattle. Metagenomic sequencing offers the potential to make economically significant reductions in turnaround time for diagnostic information for evidence-based selection of antibiotics for use in the feedlot. The success of diagnostic sequencing depends on a comprehensive catalog of antimicrobial resistance genes and other genome features associated with reduced susceptibility. We analyzed the genome sequences of isolates of Mannheimia haemolytica, a major bovine respiratory disease pathogen, and identified both previously known and novel genes associated with reduced susceptibility to macrolide class antimicrobials. These findings reinforce the need for ongoing surveillance for markers of antimicrobial resistance to support improved diagnostics and antimicrobial stewardship.

BACKGROUND: Data on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in cow-calf herds is limited and there have been no Canadian studies examining AMR in Enterococcus in cow-calf herds. Enterococcus is a ubiquitous Gram-positive indicator of AMR for enteric organisms that is also important in human health. The objective of this study was to describe AMR in specific Enterococcus species of interest from cow-calf herds; highlighting differences in AMR among isolates from cows and calves and samples collected in the spring and fall. Isolates (n = 1505) were examined from 349 calves and 385 cows from 39 herds in the spring of 2021 and 413 calves from 39 herds and 358 cows from 36 herds in the fall of 2021. Enterococcus species were identified using Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time-Of-Flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and antimicrobial susceptibility testing was completed based on a prioritization scheme for importance to human health and using the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) Gram positive Sensititre broth microdilution panel. RESULTS: Resistance was observed to at least one antimicrobial in 86% (630/734) of isolates from the spring and 84% (644/771) of isolates from the fall. The most common types of resistance across all species were: lincomycin, quinupristin/dalfopristin, daptomycin, ciprofloxacin, and tetracycline. However, the proportion of isolates with AMR varied substantially based on species. Multiclass resistance, defined as resistance to ≥3 antimicrobial classes after excluding intrinsic resistance, was highest in isolates from calves in the spring (6.9%) (24/349) and cows in the fall (6.7%) (24/357). Differences in resistance were seen between cows and calves in the spring and fall as well as across seasons, with no differences seen between cows and calves in the fall. CONCLUSIONS: While most Enterococcus isolates were resistant to at least one antimicrobial, questions remain regarding species differences in intrinsic resistance and the accuracy of certain antimicrobial breakpoints for specific Enterococcus spp. As a result, some species-specific AMR profiles should be interpreted with caution. Despite these constraints, Enterococcus species are important indicator organisms for AMR and resulting data can be used to inform stewardship initiatives.

Objective: To describe the copper and selenium statuses of beef calves at weaning. Animal: Calves (n = 1998) were sampled from 106 Canadian cow-calf herds in the fall of 2021. Procedure: Serum samples from calves were tested for copper, selenium, and molybdenum concentrations. Results: Although the percentages of calves classified as selenium deficient (< 0.025 ppm) were relatively low (0.5% western Canada, 3% eastern Canada), 53% of calves from western Canada and 77% of calves from eastern Canada were classified as having less than adequate selenium concentrations (< 0.08 ppm). Copper deficiency (< 0.5 ppm) was common in calves from both western (17%) and eastern (14%) Canada. High molybdenum concentrations (> 0.10 ppm) were identified in 6% of calves from western Canada and 7% of calves from eastern Canada. Conclusion: Selenium concentrations were higher in calves from western Canada than from those in eastern Canada (P < 0.001). Copper and molybdenum concentrations were not significantly different between western and eastern Canada. Less-than-adequate serum copper was the most common deficiency identified in Canadian beef calves at weaning. Clinical relevance: Trace minerals are important for immune system function in calves at weaning. Selenium concentrations in calves at weaning were lower than in cows from the same herds collected at pregnancy testing 2 y earlier. Copper deficiency was also identified, though less frequently than for mature cows. Supplementation programs for calves should be customized based on testing and recognize both regional and age differences in risk.


Concentrations d'oligo-éléments minéraux chez les veaux de boucherie canadiens au sevrage. Objectif: Décrire les statuts en cuivre et en sélénium des veaux de boucherie au sevrage. Objective: This study compared clinical and immunological responses to coinfection challenge of beef calves mucosally primed and differentially boosted with commercial combination vaccines containing antigens against bovine coronavirus (BCoV), bovine parainfluenza virus Type 3 (BPIV3), and bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV). Animals: Nineteen commercial beef heifers. Procedure: At birth, calves were mucosally (IN) primed with modified-live virus (MLV) vaccines, differentially boosted by injection of either combination MLV (IN-MLV) or inactivated virus (IN-KV) vaccines at a mean age of 44 d, and then challenged by coinfection with BCoV, BPIV3, and BRSV at weaning. Results: Both groups were similarly protected from clinical disease and had anamnestic neutralizing antibody responses to all 3 viruses. The IN-KV group shed more BCoV, and less BPIV3 and BRSV, than the IN-MLV group. Conclusion: These data indicated similar clinical and immunological protection between IN-MLV and IN-KV; however, shed of virus varied. Clinical relevance: Whereas boosting with KV or MLV appeared to have similar efficacy, viral shed differences may affect disease control.


Efficacité comparative des vaccins vivants modifiés et inactivés pour stimuler les réponses au virus respiratoire syncytial bovin, au virus parainfluenza bovin de type 3 et au coronavirus bovin après amorçage via la muqueuse de veaux de boucherie nouveau-nés. Objectif: Cette étude a comparé les réponses cliniques et immunologiques à une co-infection de veaux de boucherie amorcés par voie muqueuse et différentiellement stimulés avec des vaccins combinés commerciaux contenant des antigènes contre le coronavirus bovin (BCoV), le virus parainfluenza bovin de type 3 (BPIV3) et le virus respiratoire syncytial bovin (BRSV). Animaux: Dix-neuf génisses de boucherie commerciales. Procédure: À la naissance, les veaux ont été vaccinés au niveau des muqueuses (IN) avec des vaccins à virus vivants modifiés (MLV), stimulés de manière différentielle par l'injection de vaccins combinés MLV (IN-MLV) ou de virus inactivés (IN-KV) à un âge moyen de 44 jours. puis provoqué par une co-infection avec BCoV, BPIV3 et BRSV au sevrage. Résultats: Les deux groupes étaient protégés de la même manière contre la maladie clinique et présentaient des réponses anamnestiques en anticorps neutralisants contre les 3 virus. Le groupe IN-KV a excrété plus de BCoV et moins de BPIV3 et de BRSV que le groupe IN-MLV. Conclusion: Ces données indiquent une protection clinique et immunologique similaire entre IN-MLV et IN-KV; cependant, l'excrétion du virus variait. Objective: To examine antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in commensal fecal Escherichia coli (E. coli) from extensively managed beef calves and cows in western Canada and describe the differences among cows and calves in the spring and fall. Animal: Beef cattle, cow-calf. Procedure: Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was conducted on generic E. coli isolates collected from 388 calves and 387 cows from 39 herds following calving in 2021, 419 calves from 39 herds near weaning, and 357 cows from 36 herds at pregnancy testing. Minimum inhibitory concentrations were measured with the NARMS CMV5AGNF plate for Gram-negative bacteria and interpreted using Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute standard breakpoints for humans. Results: Only 16% (242/1551) of all isolates from 97% (38/39) of herds were resistant to ≥ 1 antimicrobial. Generic E. coli isolates were most commonly resistant to sulfisoxazole (11%, 175/1551), followed by tetracycline (9.3%, 145/1551) and chloramphenicol (3.5%, 55/1551). Isolates from calves in the spring were more likely to be resistant to sulfisoxazole, tetracycline, and chloramphenicol than those from cows in the spring or calves in the fall. Multiclass-resistant isolates were identified in 5% (39/807) of calves. Only 2 isolates recovered from cows were resistant to antimicrobials of very high importance for human health. Conclusion and clinical relevance: Most generic E. coli isolates were pansusceptible. The observed resistance patterns were consistent with earlier studies of AMR from commensal E. coli in this region. Baseline AMR data for cow-calf herds are not currently collected as part of routine surveillance, but are essential to inform antimicrobial use policy and stewardship.

Objective: This study addressed the current gap in knowledge of neonatal prime-boost immune responses for the control of bovine coronavirus (BCoV) respiratory disease in weaning-age beef cattle. Animals: Study 1 and Study 2 had 33 and 22 commercial cross neonatal beef calves, respectively. Procedures: Study 1 compared BCoV-neutralizing antibody concentrations of control calves with 3 groups of calves differentially vaccinated with mucosal and/or systemic BCoV modified live virus (MLV) vaccines. Study 2 compared specific and neutralizing antibody concentrations among mucosally BCoV primed groups of calves that were differentially systemically boosted. Results: In Study 1, calves that were mucosally primed and systemically boosted had higher BCoV-neutralizing antibody concentrations than the control group at weaning. In Study 2, boosting mucosally primed calves by injecting inactivated or MLV vaccine resulted in anamnestic BCoV-specific antibody responses at weaning. Conclusion: Neonatal mucosal priming and systemic boosting resulted in anamnestic BCoV antibody responses at weaning. Clinical relevance: Prime-boost vaccination should be considered for control of BCoV respiratory disease.


Comparaison des réponses en anticorps ELISA neutralisant le virus et spécifiques du virus chez des nouveau-nés bovins vaccinés par amorces-rappels différenciés contre le coronavirus bovin. Objectif: Cette étude a abordé le manque actuel de connaissances sur les réponses immunitaires néonatales de stimulation pour maitriser la maladie respiratoire à coronavirus bovin (BCoV) chez les bovins de boucherie en âge de sevrage. Animaux: Les études 1 et 2 portaient respectivement sur 33 et 22 veaux de boucherie néonatals croisés commerciaux. Procédures: L'étude 1 a comparé les concentrations d'anticorps neutralisant le BCoV de veaux témoins avec 3 groupes de veaux vaccinés de manière différentielle avec des vaccins à virus vivant modifié (MLV) contre le BCoV pour administration par voie mucosale et/ou systémique. L'étude 2 a comparé les concentrations d'anticorps spécifiques et neutralisants parmi des groupes de veaux sensibilisés au BCoV par voie mucosale et qui ont eu un rappel par voie systémique différentielle. Résultats: Dans l'étude 1, les veaux qui avaient reçu une amorce au niveau des muqueuses et un rappel systémique présentaient des concentrations d'anticorps neutralisant le BCoV plus élevées que le groupe témoin au sevrage. Dans l'étude 2, le rappel des veaux amorcés par voie mucosale par l'injection d'un vaccin inactivé ou MLV a entraîné une réponse anamnestique en anticorps spécifiques du BCoV au sevrage. Conclusion: En période néonatale, l'amorce par voie mucosale et le renforcement systémique ont entraîné des réponses anamnestiques en anticorps BCoV au sevrage. Pertinence clinique: La vaccination de rappel doit être envisagée pour maitriser la maladie respiratoire causée par le BCoV.(Traduit par Dr Serge Messier).

Objective: Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and overall postweaning treatment rates were compared among 3 groups of calves either differentially primed and boosted with commercially available bovine coronavirus (BCoV) vaccine or not vaccinated against BCoV. Animals: Commercial heifer and steer beef calves born in April and May 2022. Procedure: In June 2022, calves were randomly enrolled into 3 treatment groups. Those in 2 groups [V1 (n = 160) and V2 (n = 160)] were administered a mucosal priming dose of 1 of 2 commercial BCoV vaccines; those in the 3rd group [CTL (n = 151)] were unvaccinated against BCoV. The V1 and V2 groups were boosted by intramuscular injection pre-weaning with the same vaccine used for priming. Weaning occurred 3 wk after the last preweaning processing day. Ranch staff used a BRD case definition provided by their herd veterinarian to identify, treat, and record treatments for 45 d post-weaning. Results: Postweaning BRD treatment rates for V1, V2, and CTL were 7%, 9%, and 14%, respectively. The CTL calves had 2.2× greater odds of receiving treatment for BRD than V1 calves. There were no differences in odds of treatment between CTL and V2 calves or V1 and V2 calves. Conclusion: In a herd with previously diagnosed BCoV BRD cases, prime-boost vaccination of calves is associated with a difference in odds of BRD treatment post-weaning compared to not vaccinating calves against BCoV. Clinical relevance: Prime-boost vaccination with commercial BCoV vaccine may be an important management tool for herds with known BCoV BRD outbreaks.


Comparaison des taux de traitement des maladies respiratoires bovines après le sevrage entre des veaux de boucherie témoins non vaccinés et des veaux vaccinés amorce-rappel de manière variable à l'aide de vaccins contre le coronavirus bovin commercialement disponibles. Objectif: La maladie respiratoire bovine (BRD) et les taux globaux de traitement post-sevrage ont été comparés parmi 3 groupes de veaux soit vaccinés de manière différentielle et avec un rappel avec le vaccin contre le coronavirus bovin (BCoV) disponible commercialement, soit non vaccinés contre le BCoV. Animaux: Génisses et veaux de boucherie commerciaux nés en avril et mai 2022. Procédure: En juin 2022, les veaux ont été randomisés lors du recrutement dans 3 groupes de traitement. Ceux des 2 groupes [V1 (n = 160) et V2 (n = 160)] ont reçu une dose d'amorce par voie muqueuse de l'un des deux vaccins commerciaux BCoV; ceux du 3ème groupe [CTL (n = 151)] n'étaient pas vaccinés contre le BCoV. Les groupes V1 et V2 ont eu un rappel par injection intramusculaire avant le sevrage avec le même vaccin que celui utilisé pour l'amorçage. Le sevrage a eu lieu 3 semaines après le dernier jour de conditionnement pré-sevrage. Objective: This study compares immune and clinical responses of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV)-maternal antibody (MatAb)-positive beef calves primed with intranasal modified-live virus vaccine (MLV) and differentially boosted with a systemic MLV or an inactivated vaccine (KV). Animal: Eighteen commercial Black Angus steers. Procedure: Calves were mucosally primed at ~24 h of age with an MLV and boosted by injection of a MLV (IN-MLV) or inactivated vaccine (IN-KV) at an average age of 54 d. Challenge occurred at weaning with a virulent non-cytopathic BVDV-2 strain, 24515. Results: Clinically, the IN-KV group had a longer duration of fever, leukopenia, and viremia, whereas the IN-MLV group had greater BVDV Types-1 and -2 heterospecific antibody responses. Conclusion: Altogether, these data indicated that systemic MLV boosting resulted in a more robust protection to BVDV Type-2 challenge at weaning. Clinical relevance: Mucosal prime-boosting of neonatal calves provided protection against BVDV Type-2 challenge at weaning.


Efficacité comparative des vaccins vivants modifiés et inactivés pour stimuler les réponses épargnant la maladie à la provocation par le virus de la diarrhée virale bovine chez des veaux de boucherie sevrés sensibilisés par voie mucosale en période néo-natale. Objectif: Cette étude compare les réponses immunitaires et cliniques des veaux de boucherie positifs au virus de la diarrhée virale bovine (BVDV) dus aux anticorps maternels (MatAb), sensibilisés avec un vaccin intranasal à virus vivant modifié (MLV) et différentiellement stimulés avec un vaccin MLV systémique ou un vaccin inactivé (KV). Animal: Dix-huit bouvillons commerciaux Black Angus. Procédure: Les veaux ont été sensibilisés par voie mucosale à environ 24 h d'âge avec un MLV et ont reçu un rappel par injection d'un MLV (IN-MLV) ou d'un vaccin inactivé (IN-KV) à un âge moyen de 54 jours. L'épreuve a eu lieu au sevrage avec une souche virulente non cytopathique de BVDV-2, 24515. Objective: To describe producer attitudes toward antimicrobial use (AMU) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), identify factors associated with attitudes, and inform stewardship initiatives. Animal: Beef cattle, cow-calf. Procedure: Cow-calf producers from the Canadian Cow-Calf Surveillance Network (C3SN) completed a survey (n = 146) on producers' attitudes toward AMU, AMR, and impacts of recent regulatory changes requiring a prescription for the purchase of medically important antimicrobials (MIA). Results: Most producers (78%, 114/146) reported being aware of initiatives to improve antimicrobial stewardship within the beef industry and 67% (97/146) indicated that AMR was a highly important issue to the industry and producers personally. Almost half of producers reported concerns that AMR development has impacted AMU decisions on their operations. Overall, veterinarians were producers' primary source of information regarding AMU, including treatment protocols, stewardship programs, and regulatory changes. Following introduction of the 2018 prescription-only regulations, 95% (138/146) of producers reported no change in AMU on their operations. Similarly, 77% (112/146) of producers reported no change in antimicrobial product access, whereas 63% (91/146) reported no change in cost. Conclusion: Most producers reported little change in access to antimicrobials and in AMU following the introduction of regulations requiring a prescription for MIA. Clinical relevance: Producers rely on veterinarians as their primary source of information regarding antimicrobial regulations and AMU. It is therefore important for veterinarians to understand their role as educators for beef cow-calf producers. Ultimately, veterinarians and producers need to work together to ensure that the health and welfare of animals are protected while using antimicrobials in a responsible manner.

BACKGROUND: Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality and is responsible for most of the injectable antimicrobial use in the feedlot industry. Traditional bacterial culture can be used to diagnose BRD by confirming the presence of causative pathogens and to support antimicrobial selection. However, given that bacterial culture takes up to a week and early intervention is critical for treatment success, culture has limited utility for informing rapid therapeutic decision-making. In contrast, metagenomic sequencing has the potential to quickly resolve all nucleic acid in a sample, including pathogen biomarkers and antimicrobial resistance genes. In particular, third-generation Oxford Nanopore Technology sequencing platforms provide long reads and access to raw sequencing data in real-time as it is produced, thereby reducing the time from sample collection to diagnostic answer. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of nanopore metagenomic sequencing to traditional culture and sensitivity methods as applied to nasopharyngeal samples from segregated groups of chronically ill feedlot cattle, previously treated with antimicrobials for nonresponsive pneumonia or lameness. RESULTS: BRD pathogens were isolated from most samples and a variety of different resistance profiles were observed across isolates. The sequencing data indicated the samples were dominated by Moraxella bovoculi, Mannheimia haemolytica, Mycoplasma dispar, and Pasteurella multocida, and included a wide range of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), encoding resistance for up to seven classes of antimicrobials. Genes conferring resistance to beta-lactams were the most commonly detected, while the tetH gene was detected in the most samples overall. Metagenomic sequencing detected the BRD pathogens of interest more often than did culture, but there was limited concordance between phenotypic resistance to antimicrobials and the presence of relevant ARGs. CONCLUSIONS: Metagenomic sequencing can reduce the time from sampling to results, detect pathogens missed by bacterial culture, and identify genetically encoded determinants of resistance. Increasing sequencing coverage of target organisms will be an essential component of improving the reliability of this technology, such that it can be better used for the surveillance of pathogens of interest, genetic determinants of resistance, and to inform diagnostic decisions.

Veterinary workers use lead shielding for protection against harm from ionizing radiation during diagnostic imaging. Surface lead on shielding has been reported as a potential exposure hazard. The purpose of this prospective, analytical, descriptive study was to measure surface lead on lead-containing shielding in the field service and small animal radiology areas of a veterinary teaching hospital, and to examine potential risk factors for surface lead. Surface lead on a convenience sample of 54 lead shielding items was measured in a commercial laboratory using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The median and range of surface lead for aprons, thyroid collars, and gloves were 3.6 µg/dm2 (range, 1.3-22.4 µg/dm2 ), 23.1 µg/dm2 (range, 2.6-116 µg/dm2 ), and 134 µg/dm2 (range, 1.5-155 µg/dm2 ), respectively. In the final multivariable analysis, the mean surface lead on thyroid collars and gloves was higher than on aprons (relative differences 4.8, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.2, 10.5, P < 0.001; and 9.5, 95% CI 4.4, 20.6, P < 0.001, respectively). The mean surface lead on shielding in the worst condition was higher than on shielding in the intermediate and best conditions (P < 0.001). Lead shielding provides effective protection against the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, and shielding should always be worn during radiation exposure. Based on our findings and the common use of lead shielding in veterinary workplaces, we recommend that employers inform workers of this hazard and provide training on steps to mitigate exposure, including the use of disposable gloves when wearing lead shielding and handwashing after use.

Mandibular and medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes are routinely evaluated with CT when staging dogs with oral melanomas. While size alone is considered inadequate for detecting nodal metastasis, it is critical in evaluating treatment response, as clinical decisions are based on changes in size. It is common for different radiologists to measure the size of pre- and posttreatment lymph nodes in the same patient. The objective of this retrospective, observer agreement study was to evaluate the inter- and intraobserver agreement in measuring canine mandibular and medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes by a diverse population of veterinary radiologists and trainees. Fourteen dogs with documented oral melanoma and head CT studies identified from records of a single institution were included in this study. North American veterinary radiologists and trainees were recruited to measure the mandibular and medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes; in triplicate. Prior to performing the study measurements, participants completed a training tool demonstrating the lymph node measurements. Overall, interobserver intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was 0.961 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.946, 0.972) and intraobserver ICC was 0.977 (95% CI: 0.968, 0.983), indicating excellent agreement (ICC > 0.9 considered excellent). Similar findings were noted following sub-analysis for most variables (experience, size, laterality, axis of measurement). These results suggest that follow-up measurement of the long and short axis of the mandibular lymph nodes and short axis of the medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes in the transverse plane, performed by different veterinary radiologists using the same method of measure, should have minimal impact on clinical decision making.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of Mycobacterium avium spp. paratuberculosis (MAP) in cow-calf herds located in the prairie provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba using a serum ELISA test. Animals: Study herds were recruited from the Western Canadian Cow-calf Surveillance Network (WC3SN) designed to monitor factors related to the health and productivity of cow-calf herds. Overall, 1791 cows from 92 herds were included in the study. Procedure: Blood samples were collected from 20 cows per herd in a systematic random fashion by private veterinarians in the fall of 2014. A serum ELISA (IDEXX, Westbrook, Maine, USA) test was used for the detection of MAP antibodies in the blood samples. Results: The cow level seroprevalence across all 3 provinces was 1.5%. Alberta had the lowest cow seroprevalence (1.3%) followed by Saskatchewan (1.7%), and Manitoba (2.1%). Herd level data showed that 24% of herds had at least 1 positive animal and 5% had at least 2 positive animals. Seroprevalence estimates varied between geographical regions within each province and with herd size. Conclusions: The apparent prevalence of MAP in prairie cow-calf herds remains low and similar to past estimates for the region. However, controlling the spread of Johne's disease in the western Canadian cow-calf herd should be considered an important discussion point in the beef industry. Clinical relevance: Ongoing surveillance of Johne's disease in western Canadian beef herds is necessary for mitigating disease spread before it becomes a disease of major concern within the industry.

This study compared changes in prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni in feedlot calves derived from the auction market (AUCT; n = 299) and from a single-ranch source (RANCH; n = 300). In the AUCT calves, the prevalence of Mannheimia haemolytica decreased, whereas Histophilus somni increased over the feeding period. The AUCT calves showed an increase in isolates not susceptible to tulathromycin for all bovine respiratory disease (BRD) pathogens, an increase in Pasteurella multocida and Histophilus somni isolates not susceptible to oxytetracycline, and an increase in Pasteurella multocida isolates not susceptible to florfenicol. In the RANCH calves, the prevalence of all 3 BRD pathogens was high at feedlot entry and decreased significantly during the study period. In RANCH calves, there was a significant increase in Pasteurella multocida isolates not susceptible to oxytetracycline, tulathromycin, and florfenicol. Surprisingly, there was a significant decrease in Mannheimia haemolytica isolates that were not susceptible to oxytetracycline, tilmicosin, and tulathromycin.

Cattle at high-risk for bovine respiratory disease on entry to western Canadian feedlots are often treated metaphylactically with antimicrobials from the macrolide class. High levels of resistance to macrolides have been reported in Mannheimia haemolytica isolates from clinical samples, but it is less clear whether this trend extends to the broader feedlot population. The objective was to describe near-term [< 40 days on feed (DOF)] changes in the recovery and susceptibility of M. haemolytica isolates from healthy feedlot calves after metaphylactic exposure to tulathromycin. Eight cohorts of 100 calves (n = 800) were sampled via deep nasopharyngeal swab at entry processing (i.e., before metaphylaxis, at 1 DOF) and again at 13 DOF. Ten calves from each cohort (n = 80) were randomly sampled a third time at 36 DOF. Recovery of M. haemolytica isolates across all cohorts increased over the study period, from 33% (95% CI: 26.5 to 40.2%) at 1 DOF to 75% (95% CI: 71.4 to 78.3%) at 36 DOF. A significant shift in the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) distribution of tulathromycin from 1 DOF (MIC90 ≤ 8 µg/mL) to 13 DOF (MIC90 > 64 µg/mL) was observed. A subset of 36 isolates from 13 DOF screened for macrolide resistance genes via multiplex polymerase chain reaction all harbored the msrE and mphE genes. Recovery of M. haemolytica at 13 and 36 DOF did not decline in response to metaphylactic use of tulathromycin; conversely, we inferred the potential for rapid inter-pen spread of a macrolide-resistant clone by 13 DOF in 6 of 8 pens under selective pressure from antimicrobial use.

Les bovins à risque élevé de maladies respiratoires bovines à leur entrée dans les parcs d'engraissement de l'Ouest canadien sont souvent traités métaphylactiquement avec des antimicrobiens de la classe des macrolides. Des taux élevés de résistance aux macrolides ont été signalés chez les isolats de Mannheimia haemolytica provenant d'échantillons cliniques, mais il est moins clair si cette tendance s'étend à la population plus large des parcs d'engraissement. L'objectif était de décrire les changements à court terme [< 40 jours d'alimentation (DOF)] dans la récupération et la sensibilité des isolats de M. haemolytica provenant de veaux sains en parc d'engraissement après une exposition métaphylactique à la tulathromycine. Huit cohortes de 100 veaux (n = 800) ont été échantillonnées via un prélèvement nasopharyngé profond lors du traitement d'entrée (i.e., avant la métaphylaxie, à 1 DOF) et à nouveau à 13 DOF. Dix veaux de chaque cohorte (n = 80) ont été échantillonnés au hasard une troisième fois à 36 DOF. La récupération des isolats de M. haemolytica dans toutes les cohortes a augmenté au cours de la période d'étude, passant de 33 % (IC 95 % : 26,5 à 40,2 %) à 1 DOF à 75 % (IC 95 % : 71,4 à 78,3 %) à 36 DOF. Un changement significatif dans la distribution de la concentration minimale inhibitrice (MIC) de la tulathromycine de 1 DOF (MIC90 ≤ 8 µg/mL) à 13 DOF (MIC90 > 64 µg/mL) a été observé. Un sous-ensemble de 36 isolats de 13 DOF criblés pour les gènes de résistance aux macrolides via une réaction d'amplification en chaîne par polymérase multiplex hébergeaient tous les gènes msrE et mphE. L'isolement de M. haemolytica à 13 et 36 DOF n'a pas diminué en réponse à l'utilisation métaphylactique de la tulathromycine; à l'inverse, nous avons suggéré le potentiel de propagation rapide entre les enclos d'un clone résistant aux macrolides par 13 DOF dans 6 des 8 enclos sous la pression sélective de l'utilisation d'antimicrobiens.(Traduit par Dr Serge Messier).

Although manual restraint for small animal diagnostic radiography is common, worker protection is often not optimized, particularly for hands and eyes. Radiation safety training videos generally include hours of material on content other than personal protective equipment (PPE), have limited content, if any, on reducing dose to the lens of the eye, and are presented at the level of veterinary professionals. The objectives of this prospective, observational study were to develop a short, open access video training intervention at the layperson level, focused on proper use of PPE, and to test the effectiveness of the training video in changing behavior of workers. The use of PPE, optimal head position, and body position relative to the source of scattered radiation were compared before and after the video training was completed by workers. Results of unconditional and multivariable analyses were similar. In final multivariable analysis, workers wore gloves correctly more frequently (odds ratio [OR] = 2.09; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.68-2.59; P < .001) and wore eyewear more frequently (OR = 1.85; 95% CI, 1.23-2.78; P = .003) after completing the training intervention. Workers also had an optimal head position more frequently (OR = 1.27; 95% CI, 1.03-1.58; P = .03) and stood straight or leaned back more frequently (OR = 1.85; 95% CI, 1.48-2.23; P < .001) after completing the training. The video training developed in this study is an effective tool that can be incorporated into a radiation protection program to improve worker radiation safety behaviors during manual restraint for small animal diagnostic radiography.

Biosecurity practices of beef cow-calf herds in western Canada have not been studied extensively nor is there a good understanding of their association with herd health. A survey was sent to 103 cow-calf producers of the Western Canadian Cow-Calf Surveillance Network. Eighty completed questionnaires were returned. Bulls were purchased for all herds during the 2014 to 2017 study period; 54% of herds purchased heifers and 42% purchased cows. The use of standard biosecurity practices was generally low with 30% of producers keeping purchased animals separate and 30% vaccinating new additions. None of the evaluated biosecurity practices were associated with reporting Johne's disease. The purchase of > 10 bulls, the purchase of cows, not vaccinating animals bought into the herd, and use of community pasture were associated with a bovine respiratory disease outbreak. Outbreaks of calf diarrhea were associated with the purchase of 10 or more bulls, the use of a community pasture, and leasing or sharing bulls.

The objective of this study was to report observed radiation safety practices among equine workers using portable X-ray units at 3 veterinary practices in Canada. Practice 1 was comprised of equine field service workers from an academic institution, whereas Practices 2 and 3 were comprised of workers from private equine referral practices. Out of 2969 exposure-worker observations, protective aprons were worn for > 99% (2968/2969), thyroid shields for 87% (2584/2969), and eyeglasses for 10% (310/2969). The cassette was held by hand for 97% (1078/1114) of observations, and the X-ray unit was held by hand for 100% (1293/1293) of observations. Gloves were used for 54% (606/1114) and < 1% (5/1293) of observations involving cassette holders and X-ray tube operators, respectively. Use of gloves was more frequent among technologists than DVMs (P = 0.004), and among workers in Practices 1 and 3 than in Practice 2 (P < 0.001). In conclusion, given that workers commonly hold cassettes and X-ray tubes by hand, improvement in shielding use is needed. Consideration should be given to specific behavior recommendations in radiation regulations.


Pratiques de radioprotection chez les travailleurs vétérinaires équins canadiens pendant les procédures de diagnostic avec un équipement de radiographie portable. L'objectif de la présente étude était de rapporter les pratiques de radioprotection observées chez les travailleurs équins utilisant des appareils de radiographie portatifs dans trois pratiques vétérinaires au Canada. La pratique 1 était composée de travailleurs équins sur le terrain d'une institution universitaire, tandis que les pratiques 2 et 3 étaient composées de travailleurs sur le terrain issus de pratiques de référence équines privées. Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is an economically important cause of morbidity and mortality in beef calves. Control of BRD is most often addressed through "homologous" vaccination utilizing the same injectable modified-live viral (MLV) vaccine for both priming and boosting. Heterologous prime-boosting uses different routes and antigenic forms for priming and boosting. Three vaccine protocols were compared: an injectable (IJ) MLV (IJ-MLV) group (IJ-MLV priming at ~48 days and boosted with IJ-MLV at weaning), intranasal (IN) MLV (IN-MLV) group (intranasal priming with MLV at ~24 hours, boosted twice with an IJ-MLV), and intranasal killed viral (IN-KV) group (primed with an IN-MLV at ~24 hours, boosted twice with an IJ-KV). Serum antibody concentrations determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) were compared and the IN-KV group had significantly higher BRSV-specific antibody concentrations after boosting compared with the 2 homologous groups. No differences in BHV-specific antibody concentrations were observed between any of the groups.


Évaluation des réponses spécifiques en anticorps contre le virus respiratoire syncitial bovin (BRSV) et l'herpèsvirus bovin (BHV) chez des bovins d'embouche de l'Ouest canadien vaccinés en primo-vaccination et en rappel de manière homologue ou hétérologue. Les maladies respiratoires bovines (BRD) sont une cause économiquement importante de morbidité et de mortalité chez les veaux d'embouche. La maitrise des BRD fait appel le plus souvent à une vaccination « homologue ¼ utilisant le même vaccin injectable de virus vivant modifié (MLV) pour la primo-vaccination et le rappel. La primo-vaccination et le rappel hétérologue utilisent différentes voies et formes antigéniques pour l'amorçage et le rappel. Trois protocoles de vaccination furent comparés : un groupe MLV injectable (IJ) (IJ-MLV) (amorçage avec IJ-MLV à environ 48 jours et rappel avec IJ-MLV au sevrage). Un groupe MLV intranasal (IN) (IN-MLV) (amorçage intranasal avec MLV à environ 24 heures, deux rappels avec IJ-MLV), et un groupe avec un vaccin intranasal de virus tué (IN-KV) (amorçage avec IN-MLV à environ 24 heures, deux rappels avec IJ-KV). Les concentrations d'anticorps sériques déterminées par épreuves immuno-enzymatiques (ELISAs) furent comparées et le groupe IN-KV avait des concentrations d'anticorps spécifiques contre BRSV significativement plus élevées après le rappel comparativement aux deux groups homologues. The flipped classroom has been gaining momentum within medical education circles. Pre-class assignments are an important component of this pedagogical approach. In this study, a section of the introductory course to veterinary medical imaging was taught using a flipped classroom, and the effectiveness of two different pre-classroom assignments was evaluated. The pre-classroom assignments consisted of either short videos or readings. Both had similar content, which included basic information about pulmonary patterns of disease on chest radiographs. Learning outcomes were assessed by in-classroom and final examination questions. Student learning self-assessments and student satisfaction were also evaluated via an online survey. Students in the video group answered more of the in-classroom questions correctly (71% video vs. 63% reading group; p = .01) and had higher scores on the final examination (83% video vs. 75% reading group; p = .02). There was also a higher student satisfaction with the videos versus the reading assignment. However, we found no significant difference in the student self-assessments of learning or participation in class. An additional finding of this study related to the ongoing difficulties students were having with the learning objectives, including differentiating a pathological process from a normal, or normal variant, recognizing the different pulmonary patterns, and developing a differential diagnoses list, despite the pre-classroom assignments and large group learning sessions. This speaks to the difficulty in developing confidence in pulmonary pattern recognition on chest radiographs, a skill that requires considerable training and time investment.
