BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms are one of the most common psychiatric disorders, with a high lifetime prevalence rate among middle-aged and elderly Chinese. Obesity may be one of the risk factors for depressive symptoms, but there is currently no consensus on this view. Therefore, we investigate the relationship and predictive ability of 13 obesity- and lipid-related indices with depressive symptoms among middle-aged and elderly Chinese. METHODS: The data were obtained from The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Our analysis includes individuals who did not have depressive symptoms at the baseline of the CHARLS Wave 2011 study and were successfully follow-up in 2013 and 2015. Finally, 3790 participants were included in the short-term (from 2011 to 2013), and 3660 participants were included in the long-term (from 2011 to 2015). The average age of participants in short-term and long-term was 58.47 years and 57.88 years. The anthropometric indicators used in this analysis included non-invasive [e.g. waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), and a body mass index (ABSI)], and invasive anthropometric indicators [e.g. lipid accumulation product (LAP), triglyceride glucose index (TyG index), and its-related indices (e.g. TyG-BMI, and TyG-WC)]. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to examine the predictive ability of various indicators for depressive symptoms. The association of depressive symptoms with various indicators was calculated using binary logistic regression. RESULTS: The overall incidence of depressive symptoms was 20.79% in the short-term and 27.43% in the long-term. In males, WC [AUC = 0.452], LAP [AUC = 0.450], and TyG-WC [AUC = 0.451] were weak predictors of depressive symptoms during the short-term (P < 0.05). In females, BMI [AUC = 0.468], LAP [AUC = 0.468], and TyG index [AUC = 0.466] were weak predictors of depressive symptoms during the long-term (P < 0.05). However, ABSI cannot predict depressive symptoms in males and females during both periods (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The research indicates that in the middle-aged and elderly Chinese, most obesity- and lipid-related indices have statistical significance in predicting depressive symptoms, but the accuracy of these indicators in prediction is relatively low and may not be practical predictors.

OBJECTIVE: Hypertension refers to the persistent elevation of blood pressure above the established normal range, resulting in increased pressure exerted by blood on the walls of blood vessels during its circulation. Recent studies have identified significant associations between obesity and lipid-related indices, as well as hypertension. Nevertheless, these studies have yet to comprehensively examine the correlation between the two variables. Our objective is to identify the fat and lipid-related indices that have the strongest correlation with hypertension. METHOD: There was a total of 9488 elderly and middle-aged Chinese citizens who participated in this investigation. The participants in this research were separated into distinct gender cohorts. The participants were classified into normal and hypertensive categories according to their gender, with hypertension defined as a blood pressure level of 140/90 mmHg or higher, or a history of hypertension. Through the utilization of binary logistic regression analyses and the receiver operator curve (ROC), the optimal among fourteen indicators associated with obesity and lipids were identified. RESULTS: After adjusting for variables, statistical analysis showed that all 14 measures of obesity and lipid were risk factors for hypertension. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis reveals that the Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) has the highest degree of relationship to hypertension. Simultaneously, a statistically significant association between hypertension and these 14 variables was observed in both males and females. CONCLUSION: There was a significant independent association between various parameters related to obesity and lipid-related index and the presence of hypertension, indicating that these factors can be considered risk factors for hypertension. CVAI and WHtR (waist height ratio) can be used to screen the high-risk groups of hypertensions in middle-aged and elderly people in China, and then take individualized health care measures to reduce the harm of hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Nurses play an important role in healthcare development. The increasing demands for nurses mean that nursing schools at the undergraduate level have the responsibility to ensure patient safety and quality care through a well-designed curriculum. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of the teaching method combined with situational awareness and case-based seminars in a comprehensive nursing skills practice course on the level of self-directed learning, professional identity, academic self-efficacy, theoretical scores, practical scores, teaching satisfaction, and student competence among nursing students. METHODS: The research population comprised was of the grades of 2019 and 2020 at Wannan Medical College in Anhui Province, China (n = 169, response rate 77.88%). The observation group from grade 2020 used the teaching method combined with situational awareness and case-based seminars, whereas the control group from grade 2019 used the traditional teaching mode. General information, self-directed learning, a professional identity, and academic self-efficacy were compared between the two groups. This research used means and standard deviations, chi-square, the Shapiro-Wilk test, and an independent sample t-test for statistical analyses. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the total scores for self-directed learning, professional identity, and academic self-efficacy were higher in the observation group (78.80 ± 7.89 vs 60.21 ± 7.44, 63.39 ± 7.87 vs 52.35 ± 7.68, and 22.31 ± 3.30 vs 21.28 ± 2.31, respectively, with P < 0.05 for all scores). More significant improvements were made in the observation group on the level of theoretical scores (81.39 ± 3.32 vs 76.28 ± 5.90) and practical scores (93.32 ± 4.70 vs 90.67 ± 5.09) (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, teaching satisfaction, which includes teaching method (66/18 vs 32/53) and teacher-student interaction (72/12 vs 34/51), and student competence, which includes team cooperation (67/17 vs 39/46), critical thinking (60/24 vs 31/54), and communication skills (67/17 vs 38/47) after the intervention (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in social persuasion (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The teaching method combined with situational awareness and case-based seminars in a comprehensive nursing skills practice course has the potential to improve the level of self-directed learning, professional identity, and academic self-efficacy, and it increases theoretical scores, practical scores, teaching satisfaction, and student competence.

BACKGROUND: Nursing students are encountering a range of health issues. Assessing social support is a key component in most questionnaire surveys related to health status, aiming to investigate the relationships and mechanisms between health status and social support to enhance overall health. Therefore, it is essential to seek out appropriate instruments to evaluate social support for nursing students. The Oslo-3 Social Support Scale (OSSS-3) is a reliable and concise instrument for evaluating social support. To date, there have been no studies validating the OSSS-3 based on Item Response Theory (IRT) models. Also, an officially validated Chinese version has not been found. The current research intended to verify the Chinese version of the OSSS-3. METHODS: The OSSS-3 was translated into Chinese and culturally adapted. Subsequently, the OSSS-3 was validated by employing the Classical Test Theory (CTT) and IRT models. RESULTS: The split-half reliability was 0.622. The Cronbach's α coefficient was 0.687. The correlations between each item and total scores varied from 0.723 to 0.835. The retest coefficient was 0.907. The content validity index was 0.933. A single common factor was extracted and accounted for 61.559% of the variance. The item loading values on the single factor were between 0.743 and 0.814. The communalities were between 0.552 and 0.663. There was no variance between males and females (P = 0.055). The difference in scores between the top (30%) and bottom (30%) groups attained significance. IRT models results revealed that the discrimination parameters ranged from 1.39 to 2.33 and difficulty parameters increased monotonically. CONCLUSION: The OSSS-3 demonstrates satisfying psychometric properties and is a proper instrument for measuring social support in Chinese nursing students.

Excellent "CHON" compatible ligands based on a heterocyclic skeleton for the separation of trivalent actinides [An(III)] from lanthanides [Ln(III)] have been widely explored, the aim being spent nuclear fuel reprocessing. The combination mode of a soft/hard (N/O) donor upon the coordination chemistry of An(III) and Ln(III) should play a vital role with respect to the performance of ligands. As such, in this work, two typical experimentally available phenanthroline-derived tetradentate ligands, CyMe4-BTPhen (L1) and Et-Tol-DAPhen (L4), and two theoretically designed asymmetric tetradentate heterocyclic ligands, L2 and L3, with various N/O donors were investigated using scalar relativistic density functional theory. We have evaluated the electronic structures of L1-L4 and their coordination modes, bonding properties, and extraction reactions with Am(III) and Eu(III). We found that the Am/Eu-N interactions play a more important role in the orbital interactions between the ligand and Am(III)/Eu(III) ions. Compared with those of L1, the coordinated O atoms of L2 and L4 weaken the metal-N bonds. The Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity follows the order L1 > L2 > L4 based on the change in Gibbs free energy, reflecting the fact that the Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity of the ligand is affected by the number of coordinated N atoms. In addition, L3 displays the strongest binding ability for Am(III)/Eu(III) ions and the smallest Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity among the four ligands, due to its structural preorganization. This work clarifies the influence of the number of coordinated N and O atoms of ligands on Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity, which provides valuable fundamental information for the design of efficient ligands with N and O donors for An(III)/Ln(III) separation.

Separation of trivalent actinides (An(III)) and lanthanides (Ln(III)) poses a huge challenge in the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel due to their similar chemical properties. N,N'-Diethyl-N,N'-ditolyl-2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthroline (Et-Tol-DAPhen) is a potential ligand for the extraction of An(III) from Ln(III), while there are still few reports on the effect of its substituent including electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups on An(III)/Ln(III) separation. Herein, the interaction of Et-Tol-DAPhen ligands modified by the electron-withdrawing groups (CF3, Br) and electron-donating groups (OH) with Am(III)/Eu(III) ions was investigated using scalar relativistic density functional theory (DFT). The analyses of bond order, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and molecular orbital (MO) indicate that the substitution groups have a slight effect on the electronic structures of the [M(L-X)(NO3)3] (X = CF3, Br, OH) complexes. However, the thermodynamic results suggest that a ligand with the electron-donating group (L-OH) improves the extraction ability of metal ions, and the ligand modified by the electron-withdrawing group (L-Br) has the best Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity. This work could render new insights into understanding the effect of electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups in tuning the selectivity of Et-Tol-DAPhen derivatives and pave the way for designing new ligands modified by substituted groups with better extraction ability and An(III)/Ln(III) selectivity.

Separation of minor actinides from lanthanides is one of the biggest challenges in spent fuel reprocessing due to the similar physicochemical properties of trivalent lanthanides (Ln(III)) and actinides (An(III)). Therefore, developing ligands with excellent extraction and separation performance is essential at present. As an excellent pre-organization platform, calixarene has received more attention on Ln(III)/An(III) separation. In this work, we systematically explored the complexation behaviors of the diglycolamide (DGA)/dimethylacetamide (DMA)-functionalized calix[4]arene extractants for Eu(III) and Am(III) using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). These calix[4]arene-derived ligands were obtained by functionalization with two or four binding units at the narrow edge of the calix[4]arene platform. All bonding nature analyses suggested that the Eu-L complexes possess stronger interaction compared to Am-L analogues, resulting in the higher extraction capacity of the these calix[4]arene ligands toward Eu(III). Thermodynamic analysis demonstrates that these pre-organized ligands on the calix[4]arene platform with four binding units yield better extraction abilities than the single ligands. Although DMA-functionalized ligands show stronger complexation stability for metal ions, in acidic solutions, the calix[4]arene ligands with DGA binding units have better extraction performance for Eu(III) and Am(III) due to the basicity of the DMA ligand. This work enabled us to gain a deeper understanding of the bonding properties between supramolecular ligands and lanthanides/actinides and afford useful insights into designing efficient supramolecular ligands for separating Ln(III)/An(III).

The separation of lanthanides and actinides has attracted great attention in spent nuclear fuel reprocessing up to date. In addition, liquid-liquid extraction is a feasible and useful way to separate An(III) from Ln(III) based on their relative solubilities in two different immiscible liquids. The hydrophilic bipyridine- and phenanthroline-based nitrogen-chelating ligands show excellent performance in separation of Am(III) and Eu(III) as reported previously. To profoundly explore the separation mechanism, herein, we first of all designed four hydrophilic sulfonated and phosphorylated ligands L1, L2, L3, and L4 based on the bipyridine and phenanthroline backbones. In addition, we studied the structures of these ligands and their neutral complexes [ML(NO3)3] (M = Am, Eu) as well as the thermodynamic properties of complexing reactions through the scalar relativistic density functional theory. According to the changes of the Gibbs free energy for the back-extraction reactions, the phenanthroline-based ligands L2 and L4 have stronger complexing capacity for both Am(III) and Eu(III) ions while the phosphorylated ligand L3 with the bipyridine framework has the highest Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity. In addition, the charge decomposition analysis revealed a higher degree of charge transfer from the ligand to Am(III), suggesting stronger donor-acceptor interactions in the Am(III) complexes. This study can provide theoretical insights into the separation of actinide(III)/lanthanide(III) using hydrophilic sulfonated and phosphorylated N-donor ligands.

An efficient approach to Np separation in the Plutonium Uranium Reduction EXtraction (PUREX) process is to adjust Np(VI) to Np(V) by free-salt reductants, such as hydrazine and its derivatives. Recently, carbohydrazide (CO(N2H3)2), a derivative of hydrazine and urea, has received much attention, which can reduce Np(VI) to Np(V) in the extraction reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. Herein, according to the experimental observations, we examine the reduction mechanism of four Np(VI) by one carbohydrazide molecule using multiple theoretical calculations. The fourth Np(VI) reduction with a 22.26 kcal mol-1 energy barrier is the rate-determining step, which is in accordance with the experimental observations (20.54 ± 1.20 kcal mol-1). The results of spin density reflect that the reduction of the first and third Np(VI) ion is an outer-sphere electron transfer, while that of the second and fourth Np(VI) ion is the hydrogen transfer. Localized molecular orbitals (LMOs) uncover that the breaking of the N-H bond and formation of the Oyl-H bond are accompanied by the reaction from initial complexes (ICs) to intermediates (INTs). This work offers basic perspectives for the reduction mechanism of Np(VI) to Np(V) by CO(N2H3)2, which is also expected to design excellent free-salt Np(VI) reductants for the separation of Np in the advanced PUREX process.

The separation of plutonium (Pu) from spent nuclear fuel was achieved by effectively adjusting the oxidation state of Pu from +IV to +III in the plutonium uranium reduction extraction (PUREX) process. Acetaldoxime (CH3CHNOH) as a free salt reductant can rapidly reduce Pu(IV), but the reduction mechanism remains indistinct. Herein, we explore the reduction mechanism of two Pu(IV) ions by one CH3CHNOH molecule, where the second Pu(IV) reduction is the rate-determining step with the energy barrier of 19.24 kcal mol-1, which is in line with the experimental activation energy (20.95 ± 2.34 kcal mol-1). Additionally, the results of structure and spin density analyses demonstrate that the first and second Pu(IV) reduction is attributed to hydrogen atom transfer and hydroxyl ligand transfer, respectively. Analysis of localized molecular orbitals unveils that the reduction process is accompanied by the breaking of the Pu-OOH bond and the formation of the OOH-H and C-OOH bonds. The reaction energies confirm that the reduction of Pu(IV) by acetaldoxime is both thermodynamically and kinetically accessible. In this work, we elucidate the reduction mechanism of Pu(IV) with CH3CHNOH, which provides a theoretical understanding of the rapid reduction of Pu(IV).

BACKGROUND: Currently, the study outcomes of anthropometric markers to predict the risk of hypertension are still inconsistent due to the effect of racial disparities. This study aims to investigate the most effective predictors for screening and prediction of hypertension (HTN) in the Chinese middle-aged and more elderly adult population and to predict hypertension using obesity and lipid-related markers in Chinese middle-aged and older people. METHODS: The data for the cohort study came from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), including 4423 middle-aged and elderly people aged 45 years or above. We examined 13 obesity- and lipid-related indices, including waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), waist-height ratio (WHtR), visceral adiposity index (VAI), a body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), lipid accumulation product index (LAP), conicity index (CI), Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI), triglyceride-glucose index (TyG-index) and their combined indices (TyG-BMI, TyG-WC, TyG-WHtR). To compare the capacity of each measure to forecast the probability of developing HTN, the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to determine the usefulness of anthropometric indices for screening for HTN in the elderly and determining their cut-off value, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve (AUC). Association analysis of 13 obesity-related anthropometric indicators with HTN was performed using binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: During the four years, the incident rates of HTN in middle-aged and elderly men and women in China were 22.08% and 17.82%, respectively. All the above 13 indicators show a modest predictive power (AUC > 0.5), which is significant for predicting HTN in adults (middle-aged and elderly people) in China (P < 0.05). In addition, when WHtR = 0.501 (with an AUC of 0.593, and sensitivity and specificity of 63.60% and 52.60% respectively) or TYg-WHtR = 4.335 (with an AUC of 0.601, and sensitivity and specificity of 58.20% and 59.30% respectively), the effect of predicting the incidence risk of men is the best. And when WHtR = 0.548 (with an AUC of 0.609, and sensitivity and specificity of 59.50% and 56.50% respectively) or TYg-WHtR = 4.781(with an AUC of 0.617, and sensitivity and specificity of 58.10% and 60.80% respectively), the effect of predicting the incidence risk of women is the best. CONCLUSIONS: The 13 obesity- and lipid-related indices in this study have modest significance for predicting HTN in Chinese middle-aged and elderly patients. WHtR and Tyg-WHtR are the most cost-effective indicators with moderate predictive value of the development of HTN.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have revealed multiple risk factors for metabolic syndrome. However, there are no consistent findings on the association between famine exposure, age at menarche, and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. This cross-sectional study aimed to reveal the individual and combined effects of famine exposure and age at menarche on the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among elderly women. METHODS: Four thousand seven hundred seventy participants between 60 and 93 years of age were selected from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Statistical differences between the baseline characteristics of famine exposure, age at menarche, and metabolic syndrome were evaluated using the t-test, F-test, and Chi-square test. Three multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models were used to test the association between famine exposure, age of menarche, and the odds ratio of metabolic syndrome. RESULTS: Two thousand one hundred ninety-eight (46.08%) participants had metabolic syndrome, while 2572 (53.92%) participants did not. Furthermore, 3068 (64.32%) women reported onset of menarche under 15 years of age, while 1702 (35.68%) women reported onset of menarche above 16 years of age. Regarding the separate association of famine exposure and age of menarche with metabolic syndrome, in model three, the adolescence/adulthood famine exposure group vs. no famine exposure group odds ratio was 2.45 (95% CI 2.02, 2.97), and the older than 16 years vs. younger than 15 years group odds ratio was 1.23 (95% CI 1.09, 1.39), which was the highest odds ratio among the three models. Regarding the combined association of famine exposure and age of menarche with metabolic syndrome, in model three, among the age of menarche ≤ 15 years group, the adolescence/adulthood famine exposure vs. no famine exposure group odds ratio was 2.45 (95% CI: 1.91, 3.14); among the menarche age ≥ 16 years group, the adolescence/adulthood famine exposure stages vs. exposed group odds ratio was 3.27 (95% CI: 2.44, 4.38), which was the highest odds ratio among the three models. CONCLUSION: These findings suggested that famine exposure and age at menarche, either separately or in combination, were positively associated with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among older women.

BACKGROUND: In this study, a cross-sectional survey was used to understand and analyze the health status and health needs of the elderly in the community. The cluster analysis method was used to explore the relationship between health needs items and investigate the commonness among health demand items, to provide a reference for the development of health management of the elderly with chronic diseases. METHODS: We used convenience sampling to recruit the participants (aged 60 and above) from four urban community centers in Jinzhou City, Liaoning Province, China, in this study. This study uses the Medical Outcomes Study(MOS)36-Item Short-Form Health Survey. The self-designed questionnaire includes sociodemographic characteristics, chronic diseases, physical examination conditions, illness in the past two weeks, and a health needs questionnaire. SPSS 18.0 was used for data entry and analysis. Data analysis methods included descriptive statistical analysis, t-test, one-way analysis, cluster analysis, and linear multiple regression analysis. RESULTS: The rate of health needs among the elderly in the community for various health services is 1.3-69.7%, of which the top three are: regular physical examination (69.7%), day Care Center (67.7%), the establishment of a Medical Alert Systems (66.1%). The health needs of the elderly in the community are divided into three categories: basic needs (24 items), health education (13 items), and first aid (2 items). The regression analysis found that the influencing factors of health status were age, revenue and expenditure, medical expenses, health education, basic needs, and first aid. CONCLUSIONS: The community should strengthen the management of chronic diseases of the elderly and the publicity and education of related knowledge, and provide complementary health care services according to the health needs of the elderly, improve the health of the elderly, and improve the quality of life of the elderly.

BACKGROUND: The emergency of Omicron variants, spreading in China and worldwide, has sparked a new wave of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The high infectivity and persistence of the pandemic may trigger some degrees of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for nursing students experiencing indirect trauma exposure to the epidemic, which hinders the role transition from students to qualified nurses and exacerbates the health workforce shortage. Thus, it's well worth an exploration to understand PTSD and its underlying mechanism. Specifically, PTSD, social support, resilience, and fear of COVID-19 were selected after widely literature review. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between social support and PTSD among nursing students during COVID-19, to address the mediating role of resilience and fear of COVID-19 between social support and PTSD, and to provide practical guidance for nursing students' psychological intervention. METHODS: From April 26 to April 30, 2022, 966 nursing students from Wannan Medical College were selected by the multistage sampling method to fill the Primary Care PTSD Screen for the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), Brief Resilience Scale, Fear of COVID-19 Scale, and Oslo 3 Items Social Support Scale. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, spearman's correlation analysis, regression analysis, and path analysis. RESULTS: 15.42% of nursing students had PTSD. There were significant correlations between social support, resilience, fear of COVID-19, and PTSD (r =-0.291 ~ 0.353, P <0.001). Social support had a direct negative effect on PTSD (ß =-0.216; 95% confidence interval, CI: -0.309~-0.117), accounting for 72.48% of the total effect. Analysis of mediating effects revealed that social support influenced PTSD through three indirect pathways: the mediated effect of resilience was statistically significant (ß =-0.053; 95% CI: -0.077~-0.031), accounting for 17.79% of the total effect; the mediated effect of fear of COVID-19 was statistically significant (ß =-0.016; 95% CI: -0.031~-0.003), accounting for 5.37% of the total effect; the chain mediating effect of resilience and fear of COVID-19 was statistically significant (ß =-0.013; 95% CI: -0.022~-0.006), accounting for 4.36% of the total effect. CONCLUSION: The social support of nursing students not only directly affects PTSD, but also indirectly affects PTSD through the separate and chain mediating effect of resilience and fear of COVID-19. The compound strategies targeted at boosting perceived social support, fostering resilience, and controlling fear of COVID-19 are warranted for reducing PTSD.

OBJECTIVE: To translate the Academic Goals Orientation Questionnaire (AGOQ) into Chinese and to determine the validity and reliability of the (AGOQ) in Chinese nursing students based on SEM and IRT multidimensional models. METHODS: The participants were 654 nursing students with an age range of 17-26 years (mean age 21.61 ± 1.73 years). The psychometric properties of AGOQ were investigated based on a dual analytical perspective of structural equation modeling (SEM) and item response theory (IRT). RESULTS: The Cronbach's α value of the questionnaire is 0.895. A four-factor model was obtained by exploratory factor analysis, which explained the variance of 71.892%. With confirmatory factor analysis, a new four-factors model was built and showed an acceptable goodness-of-fit, chi-square/degree of freedom (CMIN/DF) = 4.008, goodness of fit index (GFI) = 0.932, adjusted goodness of fit index (AGFI) = 0.905, comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.952, incremental fit index (IFI) = 0.952, Tucker Lewis index (TLI) = 0.941. In the analysis part of IRT, according to the comparison between Akek's information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian information criterion (BIC), we choose the Graded Response Model (GRM) for analysis. The results show that the difficulty value is monotonically increasing, and the discrimination of all items is greater than 0.19, which shows that 16 items can be retained. CONCLUSIONS: This study tested the psychometric characteristics of AGOQ of nursing students in China. The results confirmed that the Chinese version of AGOQ has good psychometric characteristics and can be used to measure the academic goal orientation of nursing students in China.

OBJECTIVE: To improve the quality of community nursing teaching practice and cultivate undergraduate nursing students who meet the quality accreditation standards of our nursing profession, and to explore the establishment of an undergraduate nurse practice model. METHODS: Using the methods of literature review, survey, expert consultation, and discussion, we established the steps and contents of community practice teaching for undergraduate nursing students, and implemented them for the students of Grades 2014, 2015, and 2016, and evaluated the "community-hospital-community" practice model through various forms, such as student self-evaluation, faculty evaluation, exit examination, and evaluation by certified experts. RESULT: A three-stage community nursing practice model of "community-hospital-community" was established for undergraduate nursing students. After three stages of practice, nursing undergraduates successfully passed the practical assessments and achieved excellent grades in each stage that met the requirements of the training program. In the first stage (community probation), community probation emphasizes a fundamental understanding of the community, using free clinics, health education, and home visits as entry points to effectively cultivate students' job competence and proficiency in nursing operations and nurse-patient communication skills. In the second stage (internship in the hospital), through nursing internships in various systems, students are trained to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical skills and consolidate their understanding of fundamental knowledge, theory, and techniques. They are capable of preventing, diagnosing, intervening, and providing health education for common, frequent, urgent and critical complications in various clinical systems. They can formulate nursing plans and implement whole-person care. In the third stage (returning to the community for internship), students can master basic skills such as nursing operations and patient communication skills, and then they can enter the community internship. CONCLUSION: The community nursing practice model of "community- hospital- community" for undergraduate nursing students can systematically train undergraduate nursing students' ability to work in the community.

Effective separation and recovery of chemically similar transplutonium elements from adjacent actinides is extremely challenging in spent fuel reprocessing. Deep comprehension of the complexation of transplutonium elements and ligands is significant for the design and development of ligands for the in-group separation of transplutonium elements. Because of experimental difficulties of transplutonium elements, theoretical calculation has become an effective means of exploring transplutonium complexes. In this work, we systematically investigated the coordination mechanism between transplutonium elements (An = Am, Cm, Bk, Cf) and two crown ether macrocyclic ligands [N,N'- bis[(6-carboxy-2-pyridyl)methyl]-1,10-diaza-18-crown-6 (H2bp18c6) and N,N'-bis[(6-methylphosphinic-2-pyridyl)methyl]-1,10-diaza-18-crown-6 (H2bpp18c6)] through quasi-relativistic density functional theory. The extraction complexes of [Anbp18c6]+ and [Anbpp18c6]+ possess similar geometrical structures with actinide atoms located in the cavity of the ligands. Bonding nature analysis indicates that the coordination ability of the coordinating atoms in pendent arms is stronger than that in the crown ether macrocycle because of the limitation of the macrocycle. Most of the coordination atoms of the H2bp18c6 ligand have a stronger ability to coordinate with metal ions than those of the H2bpp18c6 ligand. In addition, the bonding strength between the metal ions and ligands gradually weakens from Am to Cf, which is mainly attributed to the size selectivity of the ligands. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the H2bp18c6 ligand has a stronger extraction capacity than the H2bpp18c6 ligand, while the H2bpp18c6 ligand is superior in terms of the in-group separation ability. The extraction capacity of the two ligands for metal ions gradually decreases across the actinide series, indicating that these crown ether macrocycle ligands have size selectivity for these actinide cations as a result of steric constraint of the crown ether ring. We hope that these results offer theoretical clues for the development of macrocycle ligands for in-group transplutonium separation.

Designing ligands with efficient actinide (An(III))/lanthanide (Ln(III)) separation performance is still one of the key issues for the disposal of accumulated radioactive waste and the recovery of minor actinides. Recently, the hydrophilic ligands as promising extractants in the innovative Selective ActiNide Extraction (i-SANEX) process show excellent selectivity for Am(III) over Eu(III), such as hydroxylated-based ligands. In this work, we investigated the selective back-extraction toward Am(III) over Eu(III) with three hydrophilic hydroxylated triazolyl-based ligands (the skeleton of pyridine La, bipyridine Lb, and phenanthroline Lc) using scalar-relativistic density functional theory. The properties of three hydrophilic hydroxylated ligands and the coordination structures, bonding nature, and thermodynamic properties of the Am(III) and Eu(III) complexes with three ligands have been evaluated using multiple theoretical methods. The results of molecular orbitals (MOs), quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIMs), and natural bond orbital (NBO) reveal that Am-N bonds possess more covalent character compared to Eu-N bonds. The thermodynamic results indicate that the complexing ability of Lb and Lc with metal ions is almost the same, which is stronger than that of La. However, La has the best Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity among three ligands, which is attributed to the largest difference in covalency between Am-Ntrzl and Eu-Ntrzl bonds in MLa(NO3)3. This work provides an in-depth understanding of the preferential selectivity of the hydrophilic hydroxylated ligands with An(III) over Ln(III) and also provides theoretical support for designing potential hydrophilic ligands with excellent separation performance of Am(III)/Eu(III).

The bistriazinyl-phenanthroline representative ligand, BTPhen, shows excellent extraction and separation ability for trivalent actinides and lanthanides. Herein, we first designed three phenanthroline-based nitrogen-donor ligands (L1, L2, and L3), and then studied the structural and bonding properties as well as thermodynamic properties of the probable complexes, ML(NO3)3 (M = Am or Eu and L = L1, L2, or L3), using scalar relativistic density functional theory. Our charge decomposition analysis revealed an obviously higher charge transfer from the ligand to Am(III) compared with the Eu(III) case for the studied complexes. Spin density analysis further showed a more significant degree of Am-to-ligand spin delocalization and the corresponding spin polarization on the ligands. According to the thermodynamic analysis, ligand L3 has the strongest complexation capacity for both Am(III) and Eu(III) ions, while ligand L1 has the highest Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity in binary octanol/water solutions. We expected that this work can provide valuable theoretical support for the design of effective ligands for actinide(III)/lanthanide(III) separation in high level liquid waste.

Owing to the electron-deficient nature of boron atoms, the structures and properties of boron clusters can be enriched by doping various metal atoms, including lanthanide metal atoms. Nevertheless, the viability of actinide analogues has not been fully elucidated up to now. Here we demonstrate a series of highly stable low-valent actinide(III) boron clusters AnB7 (An = Pa, U, Np, and Pu) using first-principles calculations. The predicted global minimum structures of all the AnB7 complexes possess half-sandwich geometries with C6v symmetry and belong to MIII[B7]3--type species. In each AnB7 species, the B73- ligand possesses double aromaticity features with six delocalized π electrons and six delocalized σ electrons. Bonding analysis shows that although there is a substantial contribution of electrostatic interaction in each cluster, covalent interaction is responsible for the stability of AnB7. All the AnB7 species show significantly high formation energies, especially for NpB7, which is in line with the stronger Np-B covalent bonds. In addition, the simulated photoelectron spectroscopy analysis confirms the high electronic stability of neutral AnB7. These results imply that these ultrastable actinide(III) complexes are accessible in the gas phase at room temperature. This work may provide a theoretical basis for the design of highly stable boron-based nanomaterials as well as preparation of low-valent actinide complexes.
