RESUMO

2D materials are a subject of intense research in recent years owing to their exclusive photoelectric properties. With giant nonlinear susceptibility and perfect phase matching, 2D materials have marvelous nonlinear light-matter interactions. The nonlinear optical properties of 2D materials are of great significance to the design and analysis of applied materials and functional devices. Here, the fundamental of nonlinear optics (NLO) for 2D materials is introduced, and the methods for characterizing and measuring second-order and third-order nonlinear susceptibility of 2D materials are reviewed. Furthermore, the theoretical and experimental values of second-order susceptibility χ(2) and third-order susceptibility χ(3) are tabulated. Several applications and possible future research directions of second-harmonic generation (SHG) and third-harmonic generation (THG) for 2D materials are presented.

RESUMO

We demonstrate a mid-infrared light-emitting diode based on the 2D semiconductor black phosphorus (BP). The device is composed of a mechanically exfoliated BP/molybdenum disulfide heterojunction. Under forward bias, it emits polarized electroluminescence at λ = 3.68 µm, with room-temperature internal and external quantum efficiencies of ∼1% and ∼0.03%, respectively. In our structure, outcoupling losses are dominated by radiation toward the high refractive index substrate. The ability to tune the bandgap of BP and consequently its emission wavelength with layer number, strain, and electric field make these LEDs particularly attractive for heterointegration into mid-infrared photonic platforms.

RESUMO

We present a micrometer-scale, on-chip integrated, plasmonic enhanced graphene photodetector (GPD) for telecom wavelengths operating at zero dark current. The GPD is designed to directly generate a photovoltage by the photothermoelectric effect. It is made of chemical vapor deposited single layer graphene, and has an external responsivity ∼12.2 V/W with a 3 dB bandwidth ∼42 GHz. We utilize Au split-gates to electrostatically create a p-n-junction and simultaneously guide a surface plasmon polariton gap-mode. This increases the light-graphene interaction and optical absorption and results in an increased electronic temperature and steeper temperature gradient across the GPD channel. This paves the way to compact, on-chip integrated, power-efficient graphene based photodetectors for receivers in tele- and datacom modules.

RESUMO

A multi-wavelength pumped thulium doped fiber amplifier is investigated to extend the spectral gain coverage of the amplifier in the 1.7-1.9µm wavelength range. Through the use of a combination of 791 nm, 1240 nm, and 1560 nm laser diode pumping, the amplifier gain can be improved significantly and overall gain bandwidth enhancement of ~47% as compared to single-wavelength pumping achieved. A nominal gain of 15 dB is achieved over a bandwidth of more than 250 nm spanning from 1700 to 1950 nm with a maximum gain of 29 dB and a noise figure of less than 5 dB.

RESUMO

We characterize the interferometric crosstalk and system performance of two optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM) designs based on Bragg grating/Mach-Zehnder interferometers implemented in silicon-on-insulator. Both OADM designs exhibit low crosstalk and negligible crosstalk-induced power penalties over their 3 dB bandwidths. The devices are tolerant to wavelength drift and misalignment between the transmitter and OADM; moreover, their designs can be optimized further to enable high performance operation in WDM systems.

RESUMO

We propose and simulate the characteristics of optical filters based on subwavelength gratings. In particular, we demonstrate through numerical simulations the feasibility of implementing SWG Bragg gratings in silicon-on-insulator (SOI). We also propose SWG ring resonators in SOI and verify their operation using numerical simulations and experiments. The fabricated devices exhibit an extinction ratio as large as 30 dB and a Q-factor as high as ~20,000. These fundamental SWG filters can serve as building blocks for more complex devices.

RESUMO

Rhabdomyosarcoma with TFCP2-related fusions (TFCP2-RMS) is a rare entity that commonly affects young adults with a predilection for skeletal involvement. We herein report a 40-year-old female patient with TFCP2-RMS who was misdiagnosed as fibrous dysplasia or low-grade central osteosarcoma of the mandible by referring institutions. Histologically, the tumor showed dominant spindle cells and focal epithelioid cells with marked immature woven bone formation. Immunophenotypically, in addition to the characteristic expression of myogenic markers, ALK, and cytokeratins, tumor cells also unusually expressed osteogenic markers, such as MDM2 and SATB2. Through fluorescence in situ hybridization, the tumor cells showed EWSR1::TFCP2 gene fusion and no MDM2 gene amplification. This is a rare case of TFCP2-RMS, which was misdiagnosed as low-grade central osteosarcoma due to its presenting immunophenotype of MDM2 and SATB2, as well as extensive osteoid matrix formation.

RESUMO

To study the influence of the voltage total harmonic distortion (THDV) and its spectrum on the harmonic loss factor (FHL) and the maximum allowable load capacity ratio (Imax (pu)) for the transformer of the LHCD system, we use MATLAB software to model the LHCD system and study the winding loss and maximum allowed load capacity of the LHCD system transformer when the supply voltage source is sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal, respectively. The calculation is carried out by the method of IEEE standard C57.110 and the method of considering the skin effect. The calculation results of both methods clearly show that the THDV value of the supply voltage has a significant effect on the harmonic dissipation factor (FHL) and the maximum allowable load capacity ratio (Imax (pu)) of the transformer. And the calculation method considering the skin effect increases the maximum allowable load capacity ratio of the LHCD system transformer by about 2%. The research results have important reference value for the future retrofit design of LHCD system transformers.

RESUMO

Graphene modulators are considered a potential solution for achieving high-efficiency light modulation, and graphene-silicon hybrid-integrated modulators are particularly favorable due to their CMOS compatibility and low cost. The exploitation of graphene modulator latent capabilities remains an ongoing endeavour to improve the modulation and energy efficiency. Here, high-efficiency graphene-silicon hybrid-integrated thermal and electro-optical modulators are realized using gold-assisted transfer. We fabricate and demonstrate a microscale thermo-optical modulator with a tuning efficiency of 0.037 nm mW-1 and a high heating performance of 67.4 K µm3 mW-1 on a small active area of 7.54 µm2 and a graphene electro-absorption modulator featuring a high speed data rate reaching 56 Gb s-1 and a low power consumption of 200 fJ per bit. These devices show superior performance compared to the state of the art devices in terms of high efficiency, low process complexity, and compact device footage, which can support the realization of high-performance graphene-silicon hybrid-integrated photonic circuits with CMOS compatibility.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the impact of sarcopenia on the 10-year risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: This study included the clinical, laboratory, and body composition data of 1491 patients with T2DM who were admitted to the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Tianjin Union Medical Center from July 2018 to July 2023. The China-PAR model was utilized to evaluate cardiovascular disease risk. Associations between ASCVD risk and various clinical parameters were analyzed, and the relationship between body composition parameters and ASCVD risk was assessed using logistic regression. Results: The analysis revealed that T2DM patients with sarcopenia had a higher 10-year ASCVD risk compared to those without sarcopenia, with reduced muscle mass independently predicting an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This association was significant among female T2DM patients, while male T2DM patients with sarcopenia showed a marginally higher median ASCVD risk compared to their non-sarcopenic counterparts. ASCVD risk inversely correlated with body muscle parameters and positively correlated with fat content parameters. Specifically, height- and weight-adjusted fat mass (FM, FM%, FMI) were identified as risk factors for ASCVD. Conversely, muscle parameters adjusted for weight and fat (ASM%, SMM%, FFM%, ASM/FM, SMM/FM, FMM/FM) were protective against ASCVD risk. These findings highlight the critical role of sarcopenia in influencing cardiovascular disease risk among Chinese patients with T2DM, as predicted by the China-PAR model. Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of sarcopenia in T2DM patients, not only as an indicator of ASCVD risk, but possibly as an independent risk factor in this demographics.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate risk factors for cognitive impairment (CI) and explore the relationship between obesity and cognition in hospitalised middle-aged patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). METHODS: Subjects were divided into normal cognitive function (NCF) (n=320) and CI (n=204) groups based on the results of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The risk factors for CI were determined by logistic regression analysis and generalised linear modelling. The associations between obesity parameters (body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC)) and cognitive ability were studied with the use of linear regression analysis, piecewise regression modelling and interaction analysis. The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to examine the diagnostic value of influencing factors for cc RESULTS: The prevalence of CI was 38.9% in hospitalised middle-aged T2DM patients (median age, 58 years). Age, WC, hypoglycaemic episode within past 3 months and cerebrovascular disease (CVD) were identified as independent risk factors for CI, while the independent protective factors were education, diabetic dietary pattern, overweight and obesity. BMI was a protective factor for the MoCA score within a certain range, whereas WC was a risk factor for the MMSE and MoCA scores. The area under the curve for the combination of BMI and WC was 0.754 (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Age, education, diabetic dietary pattern, WC, overweight, obesity, hypoglycaemic episode in 3 months and CVD may be potential influencing factors for the occurrence of CI in hospitalised middle-aged population with T2DM. The combination of BMI and WC may represent a good predictor for early screening of CI in this population. Nevertheless, more relevant prospective studies are still needed.

RESUMO

Black phosphorus gives several advantages and complementarities over other two-dimensional materials. It has drawn extensive interest owing to its relatively high carrier mobility, wide tunable bandgap, and in-plane anisotropy in recent years. This manuscript briefly reviews the structure and physical properties of black phosphorus and targets on black phosphorus for photonic integrated circuits. Some of the applications are discussed including photodetection, optical modulation, light emission, and polarization conversion. Corresponding recent progresses, associated challenges, and future potentials are covered.

RESUMO

Photon-electron interactions are essential for many areas such as energy conversion, signal processing, and emerging quantum science. However, the current demonstrations are typically targeted to fiber and on-chip applications and lack of study in wave space. Here, we introduce a concept of optoelectronic metasurface that is capable of realizing direct and efficient optical-microwave interactions in free space. The optoelectronic metasurface is realized via a hybrid integration of microwave resonant meta-structures with a photoresponsive material. As a proof of concept, we construct an ultrathin optoelectronic metasurface using photodiodes that is bias free, which is modeled and analyzed theoretically by using the light-driven electronic excitation principle and microwave network theory. The incident laser and microwave from the free space will interact with the photodiode-based metasurface simultaneously and generate strong laser-microwave coupling, where the phase of output microwave depends on the input laser intensity. We experimentally verify that the reflected microwave phase of the optoelectronic metasurface decreases as the incident laser power becomes large, providing a distinct strategy to control the vector fields by the power intensity. Our results offer fundamentally new understanding of the metasurface capabilities and the wave-matter interactions in hybrid materials.

RESUMO

Objective: The aim of this study was to elucidate the relationship between specific body composition and the risk of Cognitive Impairment (CI) in middle-aged Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) patients. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 504 hospitalized patients with T2DM from the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism of the Tianjin Union Medical Center. Subjects were grouped by sex, and cognitive status was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). The relationship between body composition and cognitive ability was investigated with the use of linear regression analysis. The association between body composition and CI risk was determined by logistic regression analysis. Results: The prevalence of CI was 39.3% in middle-aged T2DM patients. After adjusting for age, education, marriage status, carotid atherosclerosis, cerebrovascular disease and hemoglobin, multiple linear regression analysis showed that lean mass index (LMI), body mass index (BMI) and appendicular skeletal muscle index (SMI) were significant predictors for the MoCA scores in men (p < 0.05). In addition, BMI (OR 0.913, 95% CI 0.840-0.992) and LMI (OR 0.820, 95% CI 0.682-0.916) were independent protective factors for CI in males. After adjusted for age, education, marriage status, dietary control of diabetes and cerebrovascular disease, visceral obesity (VO, OR 1.950, 95% CI 1.033-3.684) and abdominal obesity (AO, OR 2.537, 95% CI 1.191-5.403) were risk factors for CI in female patients. Conclusion: The results suggest that there may be different mechanisms underlying the relationship of body compositions and cognitive performance between middle-aged male and female patients with T2DM. In addition, our finding of potential determinants of cognitive impairment may facilitate the development of intervention programs for middle-aged type 2 diabetic patients. Nevertheless, more large prospective studies looking at cognition and changes in body composition over time are needed in the future to further support their association.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to compare the efficacy of two novel obesity indices, lipid accumulation product (LAP) and visceral adiposity index (VAI), with traditional obesity indices in predicting early-onset type 2 diabetes (T2DM). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 744 participants, including 605 patients newly diagnosed with T2DM and 139 non-diabetic control subjects, were enrolled from a tertiary care hospital in Tianjin, China. Participants with T2DM were divided into two groups based on their age at diagnosis, namely early-onset T2DM (age less than 40 years, n = 154) and late-onset T2DM (age 40 years or older, n = 451). The predictive power of each obesity index was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Furthermore, binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the independent relationship between LAP and VAI with early-onset T2DM risk. The relationship between novel obesity indices and the age of T2DM onset was also evaluated through correlation and multiple linear regression analysis. RESULTS: In males, LAP had the highest predictive power for early-onset T2DM with an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.742 (95% CI 0.684-0.799, P < 0.001). In females, VAI had the highest AUC for early-onset T2DM with a value of 0.748 (95% CI 0.657-0.839, P < 0.001), which was superior to traditional indices. Patients in the 4th quartile of LAP and VAI had 2.257 (95% CI 1.116-4.563, P = 0.023) and 4.705 (95% CI 2.132-10.384, P < 0.001) times higher risk of T2DM before age 40, compared to those in the 1st quartile, respectively. A tenfold increase in LAP was associated with a decrease in T2DM onset age of 12.862 years in males (ß = -12.862, P < 0.001) and 6.507 years in females (ß = -6.507, P = 0.013). A similar decrease in T2DM onset age was observed for each tenfold increase in VAI in both male (ß = -15.222, P < 0.001) and female (ß = -12.511, P < 0.001) participants. CONCLUSIONS: In young Chinese individuals, LAP and VAI are recommended over traditional obesity indices for improved prediction of early-onset T2DM risk.

RESUMO

Black phosphorus (BP) has emerged as a promising two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor for applications in electronics, optoelectronics, and energy storage. As is the case for many 2D materials, the fabrication of large-area BP thin films remains a considerable challenge. Here, we report the assembly of BP nanosheets into compact thin films using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. The overlapping stacking between BP nanosheets is suppressed when the nanosheets are surrounded by fullerene C60 molecules due to physisorption. This allows for the fabrication of large-area BP films (20 mm × 18 mm) with a homogenous nanosheet distribution and negligible oxidation. The fabricated films show measurable absorption up to 2.3 µm. We use these films as active layers to demonstrate mm-sized BP heterojunction photodetectors with mA W-1 scale responsivities from the visible to the near-infrared. Photodetector internal quantum efficiencies at 660 nm and 808 nm are 5% and 1%, respectively.

RESUMO

We present a transient absorption setup combining broadband detection over the visible-UV range with high temporal resolution (∼20 fs) which is ideally suited to trigger and detect vibrational coherences in different classes of materials. We generate and detect coherent phonons (CPs) in single-layer (1L)-MoS2, as a representative semiconducting 1L-transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD), where the confined dynamical interaction between excitons and phonons is unexplored. The coherent oscillatory motion of the out-of-plane A'1 phonons, triggered by the ultrashort laser pulses, dynamically modulates the excitonic resonances on a time scale of few tens of fs. We observe an enhancement by almost 2 orders of magnitude of the CP amplitude when detected in resonance with the C exciton peak, combined with a resonant enhancement of CP generation efficiency. Ab initio calculations of the change in the 1L-MoS2 band structure induced by the A'1 phonon displacement confirm a strong coupling with the C exciton. The resonant behavior of the CP amplitude follows the same spectral profile of the calculated Raman susceptibility tensor. These results explain the CP generation process in 1L-TMDs and demonstrate that CP excitation in 1L-MoS2 can be described as a Raman-like scattering process.

RESUMO

Optical harmonic generation occurs when high intensity light (>1010 W m-2) interacts with a nonlinear material. Electrical control of the nonlinear optical response enables applications such as gate-tunable switches and frequency converters. Graphene displays exceptionally strong light-matter interaction and electrically and broadband tunable third-order nonlinear susceptibility. Here, we show that the third-harmonic generation efficiency in graphene can be increased by almost two orders of magnitude by controlling the Fermi energy and the incident photon energy. This enhancement is due to logarithmic resonances in the imaginary part of the nonlinear conductivity arising from resonant multiphoton transitions. Thanks to the linear dispersion of the massless Dirac fermions, gate controllable third-harmonic enhancement can be achieved over an ultrabroad bandwidth, paving the way for electrically tunable broadband frequency converters for applications in optical communications and signal processing.

RESUMO

An optical true time delay line (OTTDL) is a basic photonic building block that enables many microwave photonic and optical processing operations. The conventional design for an integrated OTTDL that is based on spatial diversity uses a length-variable waveguide array to create the optical time delays, which can introduce complexities in the integrated circuit design. Here we report the first ever demonstration of an integrated index-variable OTTDL that exploits spatial diversity in an equal length waveguide array. The approach uses subwavelength grating waveguides in silicon-on-insulator (SOI), which enables the realization of OTTDLs having a simple geometry and that occupy a compact chip area. Moreover, compared to conventional wavelength-variable delay lines with a few THz operation bandwidth, our index-variable OTTDL has an extremely broad operation bandwidth practically exceeding several tens of THz, which supports operation for various input optical signals with broad ranges of central wavelength and bandwidth.
