Air pollution was indicated to be a key factor contributing to the aggressive spread of influenza viruses, whereas uncertainty still exists regarding to whether distinctions exist between influenza subtypes. Our study quantified the impact of five air pollutants on influenza subtype outbreaks in Shenzhen, China, a densely populated and highly urbanized megacity. Daily influenza outbreak data of laboratory-confirmed positive cases were obtained from the Shenzhen CDC, from May 1, 2013 to Dec 31, 2015. Concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), particulate matters ≤2.5 µm (PM2.5), particulate matters ≤10 µm (PM10), and ozone (O3), were retrieved from the 18 national monitoring stations. The generalized additive model (GAM) and distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) were used to calculate the concentration-response relationships between environmental inducers and outbreak epidemics, respectively for influenza A (Flu-A) and B (Flu-B). There were 1687 positive specimens were confirmed during the study period. The cold season was restricted from Nov. 4th to Apr. 20th, covering all seasons other than the long-lasting summer. Relatively heavy fine particle matter (PM2.5) and NO2 pollution was observed in cold months, with mean concentrations of 46.06 µg/m3 and 40.03 µg/m3, respectively. Time-series analysis indicated that high concentrations of NO2, PM2.5, PM10, and O3 were associated with more influenza outbreaks at short lag periods (0-5 d). Although more Flu-B (679 cases) epidemics occurred than Flu-A (382 cases) in the cold season, Flu-A generally showed higher susceptibility to air pollutants. A 10 µg/m3 increment in concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, and O3 at lag 04, was associated with a 2.103 (95%CI: 1.528-2.893), 1.618 (95%CI: 1.311-1.996), and 1.569 (95%CI: 1.214-2.028) of the relative risk (RR) of Flu-A, respectively. A 5 µg/m3 increase in NO2 was associated with higher risk of Flu-A at lag 03 (RR = 1.646, 95%CI: 1.295-2.092) and of Flu-B at lag 04 (RR = 1.319, 95%CI: 1.095-1.588). Nevertheless, barely significant effect of particulate matters (PM2.5, PM10) on Flu-B and SO2 on both subtypes was detected. Further, the effect estimates of NO2 increased for both subtypes when coexisting with other pollutants. This study provides evidence that declining concentrations of main pollutants including NO2, O3, and particulate matters, could substantially decrease influenza risk in subtropical Shenzhen, especially for influenza A.

Extant research on sexual identity development among sexual minority individuals has been predominantly conducted in Western contexts and focused on factors that hinder identity development processes. Using thematic analysis, this qualitative study sought to explore the experiences of sexual identity development among Chinese sexual minority men as well as the facilitative factors in China that positively influence this developmental process. The sample comprised 24 participants who self-identified as Chinese sexual minority men. The analysis yielded five overarching themes: awareness of one's attraction and corresponding reactions, identity exploration, moving toward identity acceptance and commitment, acceptance and support from others, and environmental support. The first three themes described the processes of sexual identity development among Chinese sexual minority men, whereas the latter two themes centered on the related facilitative factors in the context of China. The results highlight the importance of understanding the identity development process within Chinese minority men's unique sociocultural contexts. Background. We describe the prevalence of and changes in heroin use and injection drug use (IDU) among high school students in five large, urban school districts in the US (2005-2017); nearly three-fourths of the students were Black and/or Hispanic/Latino.Methods. Data are from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's "Youth Risk Behavior Survey" program, which includes biennial surveys in urban school districts. We pooled data across districts and survey years, and then generated weighted prevalence estimates (and 95% CIs) for any lifetime heroin use and IDU. Joinpoint regression modeling was used to estimate changes in prevalence over the study period.Results. Biennial prevalence estimates (2005-2017) for heroin use and IDU were above 1.8% for all seven timepoints. In 2017, prevalence of heroin use and IDU were 2.9% and 2.5%, respectively. Both heroin use and IDU were higher among boys than girls. There were statistically significant increases in heroin use and IDU among girls from 2005-2009, whereas changes over time were stable among boys.Conclusions. High school students in large, urban school districts may have higher rates of heroin use and IDU than US high school students in general, and there is little evidence of increases since 2009. This study suggests that adolescence may be a critical period for initiation of heroin use among adolescents in large urban school districts, the majority of whom are Black and/or Latino.Supplemental data for this article is available online at https://doi.org/10.1080/15332640.2021.1992327 .

HIV incidence remains high among US youth, especially among sexual minority youth. However, only half of youth with HIV are aware of their status. One potential explanation for low HIV testing rates is that restrictive policies may prevent minors from access HIV testing due to parental consent requirements. Using pooled data from the local Youth Risk Behavior Survey, we assessed whether state HIV testing laws, including age restrictions and explicit inclusion of HIV in STI testing consent laws, were associated with differences in HIV testing rates; differences by sexual behavior were also examined. Among female youth, policies were not associated with HIV testing. However, among male youth, both the presence of age restrictions and explicit inclusion in STI services were significantly associated with increased odds of HIV testing. Results indicate that policy changes may be effective at increasing testing among male youth who have sex with other males.

OBJECTIVE: Suicide is the second-leading cause of death in youth. We tested whether having a mentoring relationship associated with lower risks for suicidality, particularly among youth at higher risk due to cyberbullying. METHODS: This study pooled the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) data from five jurisdictions that asked students if there was at least one teacher or other adult in their school that they could talk with, if they have a problem (mentorship). Students self-reported cyberbullying exposure and suicidality in the past 12 months. Odds of suicidal ideation, planning, and attempts were estimated using multivariable weighted logistic regression in overall and sex-stratified stepwise models. Interactions between mentorship and cyberbullying were also tested. RESULTS: Of the 25,527 student respondents, 87% reported having a mentoring relationship. Mentoring relationships were associated with lower odds of suicidal ideation (aOR, 0.44; 95% CI 0.33-0.57), planning (aOR, 0.59; 95% CI 0.41-0.85), and suicide attempts (aOR, 0.42; 95% CI 0.31-0.56). Stratified analyses showed a significant interaction between cyberbullying and mentorship with suicidal attempts among males, and a near-significant association between cyberbullying and mentorship with suicidal thoughts among females. Compared to male students with no cyberbullying and no mentorship, odds of attempting suicide were lower for males with no cyberbullying and mentorship (aOR, 0.55, 95% CI 0.32-0.92), higher for males with cyberbullying and no mentorship (aOR, 7.78, 95% CI 3.47-17.47), but not significantly different for males with cyberbullying and mentoring relationships (aOR, 1.49, 95% CI 0.86-2.48). Similarly, compared with females with no cyberbullying and no mentorship, odds of having suicidal thoughts were lower for females with no cyberbullying and mentorship (aOR, 0.40, 95% CI 0.28-0.57), and higher for females with cyberbullying and no mentorship (aOR, 2.54, 95% CI 1.59-4.07). CONCLUSION: School-based mentoring may mitigate risk of suicidality among adolescents and limit the toxic effects of cyberbullying.

Eucalyptus is widely planted in China for wood industries, and there are increasing concerns about its ecotoxicity in the environment. This study explored the in-vitro toxicity of Eucalyptus extracts by assessing the impacts of water-soluble and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO)-soluble fractions via a whole-cell bioreporter, Acinetobacter baylyi ADPWH_recA. Compounds identified in Eucalyptus extracts included one tannin, two phenolic acids, four terpenoids, four glycosides, and five flavonoids. The leaf extracts contained more biological-active components than barks and roots. Genotoxicity induced by Eucalyptus extracts was mainly associated with water extracts (e.g., flavonoids, phenolic acids) instead of DMSO extracts. The significant cytotoxicity was explained by programmed cell death (PCD), suggested by the results of propidium iodide (PI) and 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein-diacetate (DCFH-DA) assays. Generally, water-soluble fractions contributed more toxicities than DMSO-soluble fractions, particularly at high concentrations. A robust linear regression was built between the compromised toxicity and PCD index (Compromised toxicity = -2.192 × PCD index + 2.219; R2 = 0.8886), suggesting a PCD-dependent compromised toxicity which was greatly underestimated. Our results implied non-neglectable ecotoxicological risks of Eucalyptus extracts, hinting at the possible magnified ecological impacts of its large-scale plantation and the potential adverse outcomes to the surrounding ecosystems.

Under the variant climate conditions in the transitional regions between tropics and subtropics, the impacts of climate factors on influenza subtypes have rarely been evaluated. With the available influenza A (Flu-A) and influenza B (Flu-B) outbreak data in Shenzhen, China, which is an excellent example of a transitional marine climate, the associations of multiple climate variables with these outbreaks were explored in this study. Daily laboratory-confirmed influenza virus and climate data were collected from 2009 to 2015. Potential impacts of daily mean/maximum/minimum temperatures (T/Tmax/Tmin), relative humidity (RH), wind velocity (V), and diurnal temperature range (DTR) were analyzed using the distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) and generalized additive model (GAM). Under its local climate partitions, Flu-A mainly prevailed in summer months (May to June), and a second peak appeared in early winter (December to January). Flu-B outbreaks usually occurred in transitional seasons, especially in autumn. Although low temperature caused an instant increase in both Flu-A and Flu-B risks, its effect could persist for up to 10 days for Flu-B and peak at 17 C (relative risk (RR) = 14.16, 95% CI: 7.46-26.88). For both subtypes, moderate-high temperature (28 C) had a significant but delayed effect on influenza, especially for Flu-A (RR = 26.20, 95% CI: 13.22-51.20). The Flu-A virus was sensitive to RH higher than 76%, while higher Flu-B risks were observed at both low (< 65%) and high (> 83%) humidity. Flu-A was active for a short term after exposure to large DTR (e.g., DTR = 10 C, RR = 12.45, 95% CI: 6.50-23.87), whereas Flu-B mainly circulated under stable temperatures. Although the overall wind speed in Shenzhen was low, moderate wind (2-3 m/s) was found to favor the outbreaks of both subtypes. This study revealed the thresholds of various climatic variables promoting influenza outbreaks, as well as the distinctions between the flu subtypes. These data can be helpful in predicting seasonal influenza outbreaks and minimizing the impacts, based on integrated forecast systems coupled with short-term climate models.

Malaria parasites (Plasmodium spp.) and related apicomplexan pathogens contain a nonphotosynthetic plastid called the apicoplast. Derived from an unusual secondary eukaryote-eukaryote endosymbiosis, the apicoplast is a fascinating organelle whose function and biogenesis rely on a complex amalgamation of bacterial and algal pathways. Because these pathways are distinct from the human host, the apicoplast is an excellent source of novel antimalarial targets. Despite its biomedical importance and evolutionary significance, the absence of a reliable apicoplast proteome has limited most studies to the handful of pathways identified by homology to bacteria or primary chloroplasts, precluding our ability to study the most novel apicoplast pathways. Here, we combine proximity biotinylation-based proteomics (BioID) and a new machine learning algorithm to generate a high-confidence apicoplast proteome consisting of 346 proteins. Critically, the high accuracy of this proteome significantly outperforms previous prediction-based methods and extends beyond other BioID studies of unique parasite compartments. Half of identified proteins have unknown function, and 77% are predicted to be important for normal blood-stage growth. We validate the apicoplast localization of a subset of novel proteins and show that an ATP-binding cassette protein ABCF1 is essential for blood-stage survival and plays a previously unknown role in apicoplast biogenesis. These findings indicate critical organellar functions for newly discovered apicoplast proteins. The apicoplast proteome will be an important resource for elucidating unique pathways derived from secondary endosymbiosis and prioritizing antimalarial drug targets.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has had widespread social, psychological, and economic impacts. However, these impacts are not distributed equally: already marginalized populations, specifically racial/ethnic minority groups and sexual and gender minority populations, may be more likely to suffer the effects of COVID-19. The COVID-19 Resiliency Survey was conducted by the city of Chicago to assess the impact of COVID-19 on city residents in the wake of Chicago's initial lockdown, with particular focus on the experiences of minority populations. Chi-square tests of independence were performed to compare COVID-19-related outcomes and impacts on heterosexual vs. sexual minority populations, cisgender vs. gender minority populations, and White vs. racial/ethnic minority subgroups. Marginalized populations experienced significant disparities in COVID-19 exposure, susceptibility, and treatment access, as well as in psychosocial effects of the pandemic. Notably, Black and Latinx populations reported significant difficulties accessing food and supplies (p = 0.002). Healthcare access disparities were also visible, with Black and Latinx respondents reporting significantly lower levels of access to a provider to see if COVID-19 testing would be appropriate (p = 0.013), medical services (p = 0.001), and use of telehealth for mental health services (p = 0.001). Sexual minority respondents reported significantly lower rates of using telehealth for mental health services (p = 0.011), and gender minority respondents reported significantly lower levels of primary care provider access (p = 0.016). There are evident COVID-19 disparities experienced in Chicago especially for Black, Latinx, sexual minority, and gender minority groups. A greater focus must be paid to health equity, including providing increased resources and supplies for affected groups, adapting to inequities in the built environment, and ensuring adequate access to healthcare services to ameliorate the burden of COVID-19 on these marginalized populations.

Antidepressants may influence the food web and alter the nitrogen cycle through top-down forces. However, the effect of antidepressants on the key nitrogen-using species in the benthic microbial food web remains unclear, particularly the resulting changes in the nitrogen transformation process within the microecosystems. Therefore, in this study, we employed DNA stable-isotope probing to detect nitrogen-converting organisms at various trophic levels and quantify the nitrogen transformation process for the first time. The input of sertraline greatly increased nitrogen-transforming microorganisms and promoted more species to participate in the nitrogen transformation process. 100 µg/L sertraline was observed to stimulate the predation of bacteria via protozoa and metazoan, increasing the total nitrogen flow flux through the microbial food web to 31.50%, 1.32 times that of the natural condition. The results confirm that at sertraline concentrations close to the lowest observable effect concentration in the meiobenthos (100 µg/L), key components in the microbial food web were largely interfered and exerted a long-term interference on the nutrient cycle in the river sediment ecosystem. These findings confirm that sertraline has negative effects on river ecosystems from the perspective of microbial food webs and open a new line of inquiry into assessing ecological risks of antidepressants.

AIMS: Sexual minority youth (SMY) use alcohol at disproportionate rates compared to their heterosexual peers. However, sexual orientation is multidimensional. Analyzing alcohol use disparities only by one dimension of sexual orientation may result in critical disparities being obscured. METHODS: Data from state and local versions of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey were pooled (2009-2017), resulting in a large, diverse sample (n = 201,671). Multivariable logistic regression models were used to analyze associations between sexual identity/sexual behavior and three alcohol use outcomes among sexually active youth: age at first drink, binge drinking and current drinking. RESULTS: SMY, when categorized by sexual identity and sexual behavior, reported greater alcohol use than their heterosexual peers, though the magnitude of these disparities varied by subgroup. Both those who identified as bisexual and those who reported sexual behavior with both males and females reported the greatest levels of alcohol use. Decomposition analysis revealed that youth whose reported sexual behavior was not aligned with stereotypical behavioral expectations based on their sexual identity had higher odds of current drinking and drinking before 13 years as compared to other youth. CONCLUSIONS: Results highlight the need to incorporate multiple methods of sexual orientation measurement into substance use research. Interventions based solely on identity, rather than both identity and behavior, may not be sufficient; targeted research into the causes of alcohol use disparities is needed, especially for bisexual youth, youth whose sexual behavior and sexual identity are not stereotypically aligned, and youth who report a sexual identity of 'not sure.'

Intimate partner violence (IPV) impacts sexual minority adolescents at rates equal to or greater than the rate it impacts heterosexual adolescents. We investigated whether reports of physical and sexual IPV were less frequent in school jurisdictions with more affirming climates for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) students; and whether these associations varied for sexual orientation subgroups. We combined student-level data from the 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Surveys on demographics and experiences with physical and sexual IPV with jurisdiction-level data from the 2014 School Health Profiles on LGBTQ-affirming school climate. Multilevel logistic regression models examined associations between LGBTQ-affirming school climates and IPV. We stratified our data by sex and examined whether these associations differed by sexual orientation subgroups using cross-level interaction terms between school climate and sexual orientation (assessed via sexual identity and behavior). Sexual minority youth were more likely to report experiencing past-year physical and sexual IPV than their heterosexual counterparts. Attending schools with more LGBTQ-affirming climates reduced the likelihood of reporting physical IPV, but not sexual IPV, for female students. More LGBTQ-affirming school climates increased risk for sexual IPV among gay male students. Establishing LGBTQ-affirming school climates may reduce physical IPV for female students, but may have unintended consequences on sexual IPV prevalence for gay male students. More work is necessary to ensure that these climates are affirming for all sexual minority students and to address sexual violence prevention.

Objectives. To comprehensively assess asthma disparities and identify correlates in youths at the intersections of sex, sexual identity, and race/ethnicity in the United States.Methods. We obtained a diverse sample of youths (n = 307 073) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Youth Risk Behavior Survey. We pooled data across 107 jurisdiction-years (2009-2017). We calculated lifetime asthma prevalence by sexual identity, race/ethnicity, and their intersections-stratified by sex. We developed multivariable weighted logistic regression models to examine the impact of selected correlates on lifetime asthma prevalence.Results. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual youths have significant disparities in asthma prevalence compared with heterosexual peers. Moreover, across sex, higher prevalence of lifetime asthma was seen for most sexual identity and race/ethnicity subpopulations (27 of 30) when compared with White heterosexual sex-matched participants. Selected traditional risk factors (overweight, obese, and smoking) and bullying tended to attenuate odds among groups, especially those with a minority sexual identity.Conclusions. Asthma inequities at the intersection of sexual identity and race/ethnicity are substantive. Future studies should investigate the mechanisms contributing to these disparities to promote health equity among vulnerable youth populations. (Am J Public Health. Risk behaviors including low rates of HIV testing and inconsistent condom use as well as use of substances before sex contribute to these disparities. Therefore, HIV education in schools may be a valuable tool for reducing HIV-related risk behaviors. Using a large, pooled sample of youth (N = 169,468) from the 2009-2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), we conducted the first population-level assessment of associations between HIV education and risk behavior prevalence among high school-aged youth by sexual behavior (i.e., sex of sexual partner [s]) in the USA. Results demonstrated that racial/ethnic minority youth and SMY were less likely to have received HIV education than White or heterosexual peers. HIV education was associated with less substance use at last sex. Among males, HIV education was associated with increased condom use and HIV testing, emphasizing its promise as a potential intervention for risk behavior reduction. Results are discussed in light of current literature with future recommendations.

Chemical stabilization is frequently used to stabilize lead (Pb) or arsenate (As), but faces challenges in Pb-As co-contaminated soils because of the antagonistic reactions between chemical stabilizers and contaminants. In this work, we innovated an effective and cost-efficient stepwise steam flash heating (SSFH) strategy to simultaneously immobilize Pb and As, and unraveled the underlying mechanisms. The combination of 1.5% Ca(H2PO4)2 and 2% Fe2(SO4)3 only decreased 1.99% Pb by toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP-Pb) but increased 17.8% of TCLP-As due to the antagonistic effects. SSFH with Ca(H2PO4)2 in the first step and Fe2(SO4)3 in the second step achieved the minimal TCLP-Pb and TCLP-As of 0.778 and 0.327 mg/L, respectively. It also reduced 69.8% of leachable As in 100-year acid rain simulation, indicating a favorable long-term stabilization performance. Additionally, SSFH approach reduced 43.2% stabilizer dosage and 14.9% cost. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) documented that the stepwise SFH promoted the transformation of Pb(NO3)2 and NaAsO2/NaAsO3/As2O3/As2O5 into stable Pb3(PO4)2 and FeAsO4, preventing the formation of AsO43- and FePO4. Our findings proved the state-of-the-art SSFH approach and unraveled its mechanisms to stabilize Pb and As co-contamination in soils, offering a green and sustainable remediation alternative for the management of heavy metal contaminated sites. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: A novel stepwise SFH approach can be applied to overcome the stabilizer antagonist effects by separately immobilizing Pb and As in two sequential steps. It also decreased 43.2% of stabilizer dosage and 14.9% of cost comparing to conventional chemical stabilization. This approach can be used for other metal co-contaminated soils facing similar antagonistic challenges, and our work raises a state-of-the-art solution for cost-effective, green and sustainable remediation practices.

BACKGROUND: Suicide and PTSD are pressing public health issues in the US, with discrimination and potentially traumatic experiences (PTEs) influencing mental health. However, the unique effects of these factors on Multiracial/ethnic adults' PTSD and suicidal thoughts/behaviors (STB) are not thoroughly researched. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, an online survey was conducted (N = 1012) from October to December 2022. Multivariable logistic regression models analyzed relationships between PTEs, discriminatory events, and mental health outcomes, accounting for sociodemographics. RESULTS: After adjusting for demographics, exposure to PTEs and discrimination correlated with heightened odds of PTSD and STB. Individual lifetime discrimination experiences and specific PTEs demonstrated varying associations with STB and PTSD. The study underscores discrimination's relevance as a risk factor. LIMITATIONS: The study's cross-sectional nature restricts causality or temporality interpretations. Moreover, the convenience sample of English-speaking online participants might not be reflective of all Multiracial/ethnic US adults. CONCLUSIONS: Findings underscore PTEs and discrimination's interconnectedness in Multiracial/ethnic mental health outcomes. Discrimination might pose similar risks to PTEs. Acknowledging discrimination as potential precursors for PTSD and STB aids accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning. Incorporating racial/ethnic discrimination and traumatic experiences into PTSD conceptualization and assessment is pivotal. This knowledge informs tailored interventions and mental health education for this population.

Organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) are important chemical stressors in aquatic ecosystems, and they attract increasing more attentions recently. However, the impacts of different OPPs on carbon cycling remain unclear, particularly for those functional-yet-uncultivable microbes. This study investigated the change in lake aquatic microbial communities in the presence of dichlorvos, monocrotophos, omethoate and parathion. All OPPs significantly inhibited biomass (p < 0.05) and the expression of carbon cycle-related cbbLG gene (p < 0.01), and altered aquatic microbial community structure, interaction, and assembly. Variance partitioning analysis showed a stronger impact of pesticide type on microbial biomass and community structure, where pesticide concentration played more significant roles in carbon cycling. From analysis of cbbLG gene and PICRUSt2, Luteolibacter and Verrucomicrobiaceae assimilated inorganic carbon through Wood-Ljungdahl pathway, whereas it was Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle for Cyanobium PCC-6307. This work provides a deeper insight into the behavior and mechanisms of microbial community change in aquatic system in response to OPPs, and explicitly unravels the impacts of OPPs on their carbon-cycling functions.

Chemical stabilization is one of the most widely used remediation strategies for chromium (Cr)-contaminated soils by reducing Cr(VI) to Cr(III), and its performance is affected by human and natural processes in a prolonged period, challenging long-term Cr stability. In this work, we established a method for evaluating the long-term effectiveness of remediation of Cr-contaminated soils, and developed an accelerated aging system to simultaneously simulate acid rain leaching and freeze-thaw cycles. The mechanisms and influencing factors of long-term (50-year) change in soil Cr speciation were unravelled after stabilization with Metafix®. Chemical stabilization remarkably decreased the contents of Cr(VI)soil, Crtotal-leach and Cr(VI)leach, among which the removal rate of Cr(VI) in soil was up to 89.70 %, but it also aggravated soil Cr instability. During the accelerated aging process, Crtotal-leach change rates in chemically stabilized soil samples were 0.0462-0.0587 mg/(L·a), and soil Cr became instable after 20-year accelerated aging. The proportion of Cr bound to organic matter and residual Cr increased in soil, and exchangeable Cr decreased. Linear combination fitting results of XANES also showed that Cr(VI) and Cr3+ were transformed into OM-Cr(III), Fh-Cr(III) and CrFeO3 after restoration. During the accelerated aging process, acid rain leaching activated Cr(III) and dissolved Cr(VI), whereas freeze-thaw cycle mainly affected OM-Cr. Chemical stabilization, acid rain leaching and aging time were the major factors influencing the stability of soil Cr, and the freeze-thaw cycle promoted the influence of acid rain leaching. This study provided a new way to explore the long-term effectiveness and instability mechanisms at Cr-contaminated site after chemical stabilization.

Background: Lifetime prevalence of non-medical prescription opioid use (NMPOU) among adolescents exceeds 10%. Building on that work, we estimate lifetime and recent (i.e., past 30-day) NMPOU and examine associations with alcohol and cannabis use. Methods: We used 2019 YRBS data from 38 states with a question on lifetime NMPOU (n = 151,910), a subsample of 8 states also inquired about recent NMPOU (n = 28,439). We estimated the prevalence and frequency of NMPOU for boys and girls in each state. Multivariable logistic regression was used to derive odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) representing recent NMPOU in association with alcohol and cannabis use adjusting for state, race/ethnicity, and grade. Results: The prevalence of lifetime NMPOU ranged from 9.4% to 22.7% for girls and 8.6% to 23.2% for boys; significant sex difference in Florida. Recent NMPOU among lifetime users ranged from 33.0% to 50.7% for girls and 40.7% to 52.3% for boys, no significant sex differences. Students reporting recent NMPOU had significantly higher odds of recent alcohol (OR: 5.1, 95% CI: 4.3-6.1) and cannabis use (OR: 3.7, 95% CI: 2.8-4.8). Higher frequency (1-2 and ≥ 3 times vs. 0 times) of NMPOU had significantly greater odds of alcohol (3-9-fold) and cannabis use (3-5-fold). The magnitude of association was higher for boys compared to girls. Conclusion: The prevalence of recent NMPOU among lifetime users is high and is associated with alcohol and cannabis use. NMPOU can be a steppingstone towards other forms of opioid use therefore, opioid prevention programs should emphasize prescription drug misuse and consider socio-contextual and geographical variations.

Oil spill incidents occur frequently and threaten ecosystems and human health. Solid-phase microextraction allows direct alkane extraction from environmental matrices to improve the limit of detection but is unable to measure alkanes on site. A biological-phase microextraction and biosensing (BPME-BS) device was developed by immobilising an alkane chemotactic Acinetobacter bioreporter ADPWH_alk in agarose gel to achieve online alkane quantification with the aid of a photomultiplier. The BPME-BS device had a high enrichment factor (average 7.07) and a satisfactory limit of detection (0.075 mg/L) for alkanes. The quantification range was 0.1-100 mg/L, comparable to a gas chromatography flame ionisation detector and better than a bioreporter without immobilisation. ADPWH_alk cells in the BPME-BS device maintained good sensitivity under a wide range of environmental conditions, including pH (4.0-9.0), temperature (20-40 °C), and salinity (0.0-3.0%), and its response remained stable within 30 days at 4 °C. In a 7-day continual measurement, the BPME-BS device successfully visualised the dynamic concentration of alkanes, and a 7-day field test successfully captured an oil spill event, helping in source apportionment and on-scene law enforcement. Our work proved that the BPME-BS device is a powerful tool for online alkane measurement, showing substantial potential for fast detection and rapid response to oil spills on site and in situ.
