RESUMO

In Sec. 6 (polarization monitor) of our recent publication [Opt. Express29(5), 7024 (2021)10.1364/OE.417455], we assumed a small value of δ. This is however incorrect. The correct approximation for small ß leads to the updated Eqs. (10)-(11), resulting in a corrected Fig. 12.

RESUMO

We present an improved active fiber-based retroreflector (AFR) providing high-quality wavefront-retracing anti-parallel laser beams in the near UV. We use our improved AFR for first-order Doppler-shift suppression in precision spectroscopy of atomic hydrogen, but our setup can be adapted to other applications where wavefront-retracing beams with defined laser polarization are important. We demonstrate how weak aberrations produced by the fiber collimator may remain unobserved in the intensity of the collimated beam but limit the performance of the AFR. Our general results on characterizing these aberrations with a caustic measurement can be applied to any system where a collimated high-quality laser beam is required. Extending the collimator design process by wave optics propagation tools, we achieved a four-lens collimator for the wavelength range 380-486 nm with the beam quality factor of M2 ≃ 1.02, limited only by the not exactly Gaussian beam profile from the single-mode fiber. Furthermore, we implemented precise fiber-collimator alignment and improved the collimation control by combining a precision motor with a piezo actuator. Moreover, we stabilized the intensity of the wavefront-retracing beams and added in-situ monitoring of polarization from polarimetry of the retroreflected light.

RESUMO

We demonstrate nonlinear pulse compression by multi-pass cell spectral broadening (MPCSB) from 860 fs to 115 fs with compressed pulse energy of 7.5 µJ, average power of 300 W and close to diffraction-limited beam quality. The transmission of the compression unit is >90%. The results show that this recently introduced compression scheme for peak powers above the threshold for catastrophic self-focusing can be scaled to smaller pulse energies and can achieve a larger compression factor than previously reported. Good homogeneity of the spectral broadening across the beam profile is verified, which distinguishes MPCSB among other bulk compression schemes.

RESUMO

Direct laser excitation of the lowest known nuclear excited state in ^{229}Th has been a long-standing objective. It is generally assumed that reaching this goal would require a considerably reduced uncertainty of the isomer's excitation energy compared to the presently adopted value of (7.8±0.5) eV. Here we present a direct laser excitation scheme for ^{229m}Th, which circumvents this requirement. The proposed excitation scheme makes use of already existing laser technology and therefore paves the way for nuclear laser spectroscopy. In this concept, the recently experimentally observed internal-conversion decay channel of the isomeric state is used for probing the isomeric population. A signal-to-background ratio of better than 10^{4} and a total measurement time of less than three days for laser scanning appear to be achievable.

RESUMO

We demonstrate a scheme for nonlinear pulse compression at high average powers based on self-phase modulation in a multi-pass cell using fused silica as the nonlinear medium. The scheme is suitable for compression of pulses with peak powers exceeding the threshold for critical self-focusing. At >400 W of input power, the pulses of a Yb:YAG-Innoslab laser system (10 MHz repetition rate, 850 fs pulse duration) are spectrally broadened from 1.6 to >13.5 nm bandwidth while maintaining almost diffraction-limited beam quality. The chirp is removed with a dispersive mirror compressor, and pulse durations of 170 fs at an output power of 375 W are achieved. The compression unit reaches an overall transmission of >90%.

RESUMO

We demonstrate micro structuring of fused-silica laser mirror substrates by Inverse Laser Drilling. Slits of a width down to ~80 µm and circular holes with diameters down to ~50 µm have been structured into quarter-inch thick substrates. Except for chipping, the surface areas around these openings have not been irreversibly affected by the manufacturing process. The micro structured mirrors can be used for geometrical output coupling of coherent EUV radiation from cavity-enhanced high harmonic generation.

RESUMO

In passive enhancement cavities the achievable power level is limited by mirror damage. Here, we address the design of robust optical resonators with large spot sizes on all mirrors, a measure that promises to mitigate this limitation by decreasing both the intensity and the thermal gradient on the mirror surfaces. We introduce a misalignment sensitivity metric to evaluate the robustness of resonator designs. We identify the standard bow-tie resonator operated close to the inner stability edge as the most robust large-mode cavity and implement this cavity with two spherical mirrors with 600 mm radius of curvature, two plane mirrors and a round trip length of 1.2 m, demonstrating a stable power enhancement of near-infrared laser light by a factor of 2000. Beam radii of 5.7 mm × 2.6 mm (sagittal × tangential 1/e(2) intensity radius) on all mirrors are obtained. We propose a simple all-reflective ellipticity compensation scheme. This will enable a significant increase of the attainable power and intensity levels in enhancement cavities.

RESUMO

We demonstrate a high-finesse femtosecond enhancement cavity with an on-axis obstacle. By inserting a wire with a width of 5% of the fundamental mode diameter, the finesse of F = 3400 is only slightly reduced to F = 3000. The low loss is due to the degeneracy of transverse modes, which allows for exciting a circulating field distribution avoiding the obstacle. We call this condition quasi-imaging. The concept could be used for output coupling of intracavity-generated higher-order harmonics through an on-axis opening in one of the cavity mirrors.

RESUMO

We report on single-pass high-harmonic generation (HHG) with amplified driving laser pulses at a repetition rate of 20.8 MHz. An Yb:YAG Innoslab amplifier system provides 35 fs pulses with 20 W average power at 1030 nm after external pulse compression. Following tight focusing into a xenon gas jet, we observe the generation of high-harmonic radiation of up to the seventeenth order. Our results show that state-of-the-art amplifier systems have become a promising alternative to cavity-assisted HHG for applications that require high repetition rates, such as frequency comb spectroscopy in the extreme UV.
